MOTION Different types of Mechanisms create different types of motion. Here are some examples for you to think about.
MOTION Task 1: Using the internet, research the main types of motion, Rotary, Oscillating, Reciprocating and Linear. Collect images and text on each type. Create an A3 poster showing different mechanisms and the type of motion created.
MOTION Task 2: Open the Motion Worksheet by clicking the link below. Then complete tasks 1,2 & 3 on the worksheet.

CONVERTING MOTION Some mechanisms convert one type of motion into another. Have a look at these mechanisms.
Gear Train
Rack and Pinion
Crank and Slider Cam and Follower
Task 3:
What is the motion conversion in each of these mechanisms? Enter your answer on the worksheet. Click HERE to open the worksheet.
CONVERTING MOTION Have a look at the Flying Pig web site. There are more examples of motion converters. Click here to visit the web site. Have a look at the MECHANISMS and COMPOUND MECHANISMS tabs.
Take a note of some of these, they may come in handy later on!
Mechanical Toys Mechanical toys use some of the mechanisms we have been researching. Here are a couple of examples of mechanical toys.
Mechanical toy No.1
Mechanical Toy No. 2
What mechanisms are these toys using?
Mechanical Toy Task These mechanical toys are quite complicated and would take far too long to manufacture in the school workshop. However, we should be able to manage a smaller version of a mechanical toy.
Task 4: Think about a character or object you would like to make into a mechanical toy. This could be a cartoon character, flag, ship, etc. Task 5: Now decide what type of mechanism you want to use in your toy. Cams and levers are the easiest to use! Task 6: Try and decide how you are going to construct the toy. Where are the axles, wheels, cams, levers, etc. going to be housed. Task 7: Discuss your ideas with your teacher before starting the manufacture of your toy.
Mechanical Toy Task When you have made and tested your toy, take a digital photograph and paste it in the box below. Add an evaluation next to your image and give it mark out of 10.
