Colour pencil This technique is referred to as a stepped gradient, where each step the colour gets darker or lighter. We use this technique on flat sided models like a cube.

Exercise 10
Another rendering technique we use in CDT is referred to as a gradual gradient, or a tonal scale. Using a tonal scale, a colour starts very light then gradually gets darker until it is very dark. We use this technique on curved surfaces like a cylinder.
