Framing History

Framing History Many styles have been seen in architecture throughout history, not just outside the household but mainly within the home over the years as the needs and preferences have developed. Art frames, and the development of them were closely tied to the changing trends in architecture. Frames were used for many different things like paintings, mirrors, reliefs, etc., and were created from their infancy as an extension of an architectural style and design. Discovered in an Egyptian tomb in the second century A.D., a frame was being used to highlight a portrait of a fayum mummy. Archeologist's believe that these types of mummy images could have been hung in the owner’s home while living. In ancient Greek and Egyptian artwork, frames were generally used to separate ornamental scenes on paintings and pottery. Experts think that the first evidence of carved frames were discovered around the 12th and 13th century in Europe. Frames were used to create proportion and consistency throughout an inner surface. Designed to display what they contained, these early frames were designed to match the style of their specified hanging place. Where they were placed and what was placed inside them typically factored in to the shape, size, color and intricacy of the framework. It is very interesting how frames evolved after some time. Frames first started appearing worldwide as borders 3-4,000 years ago on burial locations. The function of the frame started being modified in early Christian art, where it was not only decorative, but protecting. Frames started being considered more than just decorative fluff, but were used to emphasize and protect what was on the inside. Quite symbolic and lined in precious stones or metals to emphasize the importance of what the early Christian alter support frames held great significance. Historians consider the first actual picture frames to be found in the old ecclesiastical locations. Customized by the ultra powerful and used as a way to show social wealth and standing, the frames were taken from the more religious up to the more social elite. Following that, frames were found in the secular arena and their reputation increased drastically from the 14th century to recent times. It is really fascinating to note that frames also evolved differently depending on the culture they were produced in. As one example, in the Renaissance period of time in Italy, the most popular frames were called cassetta frames. In France, the most popular type of frame was referred to as the French Rococo frame and designed in the 18th century. Throughout time, frames generally were made of real wood while in today's world materials have changed to some extent to include all kinds of substances. Any color, size and texture can be seen currently for photo frames. Some frames, just like the ones used for art and images can have different types of patterns and moldings, sometimes relating to the subject matter to be framed. Some frames also contain framing glass which could also be crafted from acrylic (a glass alternative like Plexiglas), which is used to protect the picture or piece of artwork further. Frames have absolutely evolved to enhance, individualize and protect what is held in them throughout time and various cultures. People for years have used frames to protect and display important art work or photographs to preserve them for future generations and even though frames have evolved considerably, they are still used with this simple concept in mind for centuries. The beauty of what is held inside the frame is fully protected, while enhancing the space it is being placed in.
