“To design is much more than simply to assemble, to order, or even to edit: it is to add value and meaning, to illuminate, to simplify, to clarify, to modify, to dignify, to dramatize, to persuade, and perhaps even to amuse. To design is to transform to prose into poetry. -Paul Rand

Next Hub Overview: Steelcase national student design competition. Objective: To design a cutting-edge higher education learning institution called the Next Hub for students enrolled in online coursework to gather and engage with others doing the same.

Next Hub | 21

Concept Imagery | 22

CONCEPT PHILOSOPHY Next Hub is inspired by a dispersing white seeded dandelion. Floors ten and eleven are designed with a central space with surrounding rooms. A grand staircase encourages interaction, a gradient feature represents the dispersal of the dandelion seeds in the childcare center, the learning commons, the tutoring center, and the recharge space. High ceilings in the learning commons draw the eye up to a dandelion shaped lighting feature. The themes of community, diversity, and making a wish a reality all make The Next University Hub a space that students will come to learn, but leave to make an impact on the world.
