The focus of my work has been in design and progressive thinking that creates change, emphasizing diversity, and improvement of quality of life. I am very interested in Site Specific projects that reflect the connections between architecture, landscape with an emphasis on service. I was born in Mexico City and have lived in large cities all my life. While most people fear the future of our cities, I see a hope in the challenges we face. It is in projects like this one that I see this hope and an opportunity to learn to rethink way we live, learn, grow our food, and harvest our energy. The outcome of my design is always different; it draws on the historical, artistic, and ecological context of individual sites, and strives to create enriching and environmentally responsible spaces that are at the same time spatially and visually compelling.

Monica Hernandez joined Balmori Associates in 2008, where she has been involved in various projects including The United States Institute of Peace, Caja Sol Sevilla, and a private residential home in Bedford New York. She has been responsible in assembling teams and proposals for competitions, and new project developments. An Architect from the Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico, she has currently completed a Masters in Landscape Design from Columbia University in New York. For the past 7 years has worked in various architectural studios in NY, including the Studio Gaia and Lifeform Ltd, , and in Mexico with Ludens, Higuera +Sanchez and Pascal Arquitectos. Blending architecture and landscape, she has been part of several sustainable and community projects in her native Mexico. In 2002 she was part of a small design team that built the first Permaculture school in Oaxaca, Mexico and has since then collaborated with Architecture for Humanity for the ‘Classroom Open Architecture Challenge.’ Her work has also focused on the new media and public outreach. With Balmori Associates she helped to organize a Public Space forum using Twitter as a medium and participated in several exhibitions and lectures in NY including: ‘Nooks’ Exhibition with Fritz Haeg Dome Colonies X in the San Gabriels at X Initiative Dia Foundation, and ‘Making Public Places THE HUB’ for ConFlux City, festival of Urban Interventions. In 2007 she spoke at ‘Postopolis’ a Lecture series at StoreFront for Art and Architecture and in 2005 was a speaker at the ‘Gel Conference’, Good Experience at The Equitable Center in NY. Her portfolio was chosen to be part of the permanent library at the Van Allen Institute in NY as an example of young emerging talent.

HUDSON YARDS PARK & BOULEVARD COMPETITION NEW YORK NY

Hudson Yards linear park runs parallel to the Hudson River Park, while connecting the major transportation and cultural hubs of 34th and 42nd streets. The Wild West Side and Low Line Park is where Central Park meets Times Square in an explosion of ecological and programmatic exuberance. Low Line Park is a linear park extending and building upon the concept of the High Line with a new context and form. It is a park of movement that creates an urban leisure infrastructure by joining multiple pieces of program. The diversity and program of Low Line Park grow organically out of the New York City grid, giving form and intensity the park. This pattern of development and its mixed uses serve as a model for Low Line Park as a new kind of linear park, one that is a hyper programmed response to its surrounding development.

WORK EXPERIENCE / LANDSCAPE DESIGN BALMORI ASSOCIATES

BEDFORD HOUSE BEDFORD CORNERS, NY

For this renovation of a 1950’s house in the town of Bedford, we collaborated with Balmori Associates to create a scheme that weaves interior and exterior as well as Main House and Pool House together by juxtaposing materials, surface, and planting. Inside the house’s cedar-clad darker perimeter shell is a refined folded surface made of custom concrete, exterior pavers, and drywall. This internal surface links the multi-leveled interior space and extends the inside out to the Pool House in the back, where it exposes itself fully as a dramatic folded concrete structure. Linking architecture to landscape is a stacked bluestone wall that brackets the Pool House in the lush surrounding landscape. The wall disappears into the hill on one end while slowly folding itself into the pool on the other end. Different types of vegetation create a pattern that continues from front to back of the

United States Institute of Peace Washington, DC

The Peace Institute’s landscape is designed as a garden; a garden that surrounds a circular foyer for groups to gather at the front of the Peace and Education Center. This foyer is contained, first of all, by semicircular benches which curve inwards around a long table with individual stools; contained beyond by “living walls” which separate the space from the two busy streets which intersect at its corner. The living walls are undulating walls of concrete which flow through the gardens and paths at various angles and heights. These inclined walls are draped with plants or contain pockets of planting. In several places they allow water to run down them and are lighted. These living walls serve several functions. They serve, first, as a line of security around the building’s perimeter. Second, they hide the constant movement of traffic around the two main streets by the site. Third, because they are planted they give the sense of a broader, thicker surface increasing the sensed distance from the traffic.

CLIENT

Flowering trees and perennials add their color and texture to the enclosure in white and purple. White as a symbol of peace and as a reassertion of the white color of the wing-like roof of Moshe Safdie’s building. Purple, used with restraint, to set up the white more dramatically. The plants have been also chosen for scent, so that visitors are enveloped in perfume, color and water once they enter the precinct. Beyond the circular foyer, the public passes by the edge of the terrace which fronts the building but which you can enter only from the inside. The edge of the terrace allows for a view at the exhibition space below. The terrace itself is an extension of the Great Hall within. At this point the visitor has dramatic views of the atrium and its translucent hovering roof above. As the public ascends toward the entrance there are also long views toward the Institute’s gardens to the west.

The central idea behind the landscape design for Caja Sol Sevilla is to create a shaded and cool path, with sounds and vapors of water, and variations in the degree of shade and shadows. The project is located in the south of the Isla of Cartuja, and is composed of a central square and two terraces on commercial podiums. The square is defined by the podiums that run north-south, which concentrate pedestrian activity and protected the plaza from the sun.

Barn in the Forest

Upstate New York Design This modern house designed by Angela Patterson is one of four barn-like structures that have been adapted to become modern homes. The project proposes that if the house is readapted farm structure then other aspects of the agricultural language could also be readapted and transformed into a contemporary language. By blending an agricultural model into the forest the landscape is transformed. Fences, water, fences and trails and the idea of cycles are turned into a pool, stonewalls, and a mobile gallery that follows the sun. The crop squares are reinterpreted into incisions on the land that have been planted as native grass fields, meadows, and fern terraces. Edibles are also introduced into them to enhance this idea. One of the most emblematic elements of the house is that is split in two by a thin ramp that cuts into the forest. This ramp is elongated in each direction creating a spine which organizes the entire program. It creates access into the house and give the owner an opportunity to walk the entire property.

“NOOKS” For Dome Colony X in the Saint Gabriels Manhattan NY

Designer, Organizer, Collaboration with Balmori Associates The piece that we produced for the “Dome Colony in the San Gabriel’s“, for Fritz Haeg’s two month long exhibition at the X Initiative Art Space was a way of playing with seating and planting. Envisioned as dynamic space and furniture piece; in form, it is a garden that engages the Colony. It is not only designed for visitors to move and play with, it is a social community space that invites them to linger, and just be. Using this as a premise the units allow you to make nooks where one person can be alone, or some can be for two or a large group. We named the experiment “nooks” for this reason. The secondary idea grafted on this was if plants could be incorporated into the system. This time they are shown conceptually by providing paper flowers that people can plant in the space. The Garden narrates a story of landscape taking over and expanding over the Public Space, therefore changing the way that the space is perceived and read by the user. The users that “plant” flowers in it, transform it with time.

Design Team, Collaboration with Maura Rockcastle, Jeremy Wyatt Linzee, Ivan Hernandez Quintela, and Emilie Lucie Baltz The premise of our design recognizes that the vision for the pedestrian areas is inextricably woven with art and the design of public space- each needs the other to succeed and in turn something new is created through strengthening the connection between these parts. “Corn Is the Color of My Cab” is ultimately a story of corn that set the course and form of the Broadway Corridor we know now- from trail to farm to street to city. It begins with the Lenape Indians, the first inhabitants of Times Square, whose main crop was corn, and goes forward to the delirious intensity of crowds, images, lights and traffic of today. This visual connection is intended to create consciousness about how corn makes up the majority of the signage in Times Square and the crisis of our native crops. Through the iconic yellow color of the New York cab - the most easily seen from afar, we allow the corn kernels to create a pixilated grid on the ground that is seen as topography from above. If we were to allow the yellow paint to make something that we see everyday suddenly disappear, taxis would be the neutral condition, in the same way that corn has faded into the background of our everyday objects.

“EAT YOUR VEGETABLES” Edible JELL-O Flash Cards for Kids Manhattan NY

Designer, Organizer, Collaboration with Robert Truitt, Ngoc Mihn Ngo This project takes a critical look at the digital age, consumerism and the empowerment of education that are influencing children today, It takes an iconic everyday object like the iphone and transforms it physically and programmatically into an edible JELL-O flashcard that teaches kids to eat vegetables. Hoping that their positive association with the JELL-O and to the smell and taste will allow them to try flavors that they would otherwise never try. The mold itself is a case from an old iphone model. With the recent release of the new iphone, and society’s desire to always have the latest technology, we predict that thousands of these cases will become useless to the users that have bought the new phone. So the mold is now a found object , reused and given a new purpose. The JELL-O molded into this is meant to question the role of technology. The JELL-O not only becomes a medium but a vehicle for giving kids a healthy helping of vegetables ( mixed with fruit). The card’s protective screen holds the name and image of the vegetable as it appears in a garden so that the child can have a positive association with it and begin to identify it. We will be creating a “ carrot “ flash card and a “beet” flashcard.

Living Chandelier, Brooklyn, NY

Designer, Collaboration with Terreform1 through TerreFarm 2010 TerreFarm Design+Grow Summer Lab is a one week workshop that takes place at the Metropolitan Exchange Building in Brooklyn, NY. Every year 35 students and professionals from the fields of architecture, landscape architecture, urban design and planning, art, media and science are chosen to create new prototypes for Urban agriculture. TerreFarm Lab seeks to rethink the city, in both its forms and its life, by reflecting new levels of sustainability. During the lab three projects were created to replace an old skylight with a Living Chandelier or hanging garden that can produce food. Using found materials prototypes were made and fabricated by hand using basic tools. A green house was build on top of the skylight to give it more height. An white electrical cable net was woven and filled hung from the top to be filled with plants that could hang from its pockets. Bladders out of marine shrink wrap plastic were assembled in an organic fashion to hold lettuces and leafy plants that could be connected via tubes to another water bag. A line of lightweight mirrors weighed with construction plumbs dangle down and reflect the sun light. The projects hang from a polley system that can regulate their height and allow for maintenance and harvesting.

Here's the first look at designs for a spectacular new boulevard and park planned for Manhattan's far West Side, where Mayor Bloomberg wants to build a new business district more than twice the size of the World Trade Center complex. From fanciful images of hills, trails and plantings to a park filled with enormous evergreen trees and rock outcrops, the proposals from five teams of architects vying to design the park and boulevard will go before the public beginning today. The project, part of the Hudson Yards redevelopment, will create four acres of park space down the middle of a boulevard stretching from 33rd to 42nd Streets, between 10th and 11th Avenues, and linking up with a massive new office and residential project planned for the West Side rail yard just to the south of the new avenue. "We are thrilled by the quality of the designs," said Ann Weisbrod, president of the Hudson Yards Development Corp., which is overseeing construction of the project and the financing of an extension of the No. 7 subway line to a new station at 11th Avenue and 34th Street. The winning design will be selected in early October, Weisbrod said. Construction of the first phase of the project, from 33rd to 36th streets, is expected be completed at the same time as the subway extension in 2013. The now low-rise neighborhood was rezoned by the City Council several years ago to allow for up to 24 million square feet of office space and 13,500 new units of housing, along with hotels and retail development.
