Project Narrative “The parents of two active girls wanted to create a multi-tasking garden in their tiny backyard that would host rugged soccer practices as well as elegant dinner parties. Meg Herndon complied with a blend of plantings and hardscape. The custom built pergola acts as a transition from the walkway to the garden and also forms a contemporary proscenium over a stage of ipe. In addition to LED lights that bathe the area at night, the owners went green with recycled cement tiles which are integrated into the garden walk. “ Washington Spaces Magazine. Early spring 2009

Project Manager -answer submittals and RFI’s -attend weekly construction meetings -coordinate additional services with owner SketchUp Model Concept Design-Terraces Construction Details collaboration Construction Administration-Planting

Project Narrative

JHLA’s design for Sallie Mae’s 22 acre campus in Newark, DE turned the existing storm water retention system into a focal point. Employees are provided a pleasant view from their offices as well as an inviting place to lunch and exercise. The pond is divided into two elements connected by a dramatic weir and pedestrian bridge.

18

19

TERRACE CONCEPT: An invisible grid is organized off the curve created by a seat wall in the original site design. The grid is expressed in some places by oversized 3x6’ pavers. In others it is ‘hidden’ by bands of tumbled bluestone and granite. The large pavers fade out as they get further from their point of origin both across the terrace and out into the landscape. This dissolving pattern is meant to create visual movement and invite the user into the landscape.

The trees provide a woodsy feeling that they didn’t want to have “Southern Fish” compromised. Additionally, after a neighborhood child died tragically, there had been a community build initiative whereby many timber-constructed elements were put in place and were well used. The design team gave multiple public presentations, made house calls to community members, and solicited extensive feedback in order to respectfully improve conditions on site.

30

CONCEPT PLAN: Located near the Naval Observatory, the redesign for this playground is inspired by constellations in the summer sky. Paths are laid out to avoid existing oaks and are hierarchical to accommodate different types and speeds of circulation. Concrete hemispheres are arranged to mimic constellations and are coated with flexi-pave. There is an observation tower on a slope that allows visitors to pick out the constellations and learn about the summer night sky.

31

PLANTING PLAN: A low point, poorly drained soils, and the extensive root systems of existing Willow Oaks combined to create challenging conditions for new plant introductions. The planting plan uses native Viburnum, Red Twig Dogwood, Winterberry Holly, and shallow rooted perennials to contribute to the desired “woodsy environment.

This quick sketch I did during a conference call was used to guide the creation of the observation tower

Philosophy From estate gardens to edible gardens to playgrounds, rain gardens, and gardens for dry shade and compacted

soils, working with plants over the past 15 years has given me a broad knowledge base on which to draw in varied situations. I enjoy the balancing act of selecting and placing plants that will work together to simultaneously embrace civilization and the wilderness. My favorite projects are structurally strong and use plants that host a diversity of insect, bird, and human species
