ABOUT THE CLUB The Subaru 4WD Club of Victoria Inc. was originally formed over 40 years ago by an enthusiastic group of Subaru owners. Today the club has expanded to include all Subaru 4WD and AWD vehicles, as well as all other makes of AWD, light 4WD and crossover/soft-roader type vehicles. The club aims to participate in the exploration of the Australian countryside without damage to the environment, vehicle or individual. Visitors are most welcome to attend the club’s General Meetings and contact committee members regarding participation in club activities.
The club relies on membership fees to offset its running costs, including insurance. Membership fees are payable each year, due on 31 May. Fees for the 2019/20 year were ratified at the general meeting in April 2019 and are as follows:

PRESIDENT’S REPORT A month has come and gone again, and ‘what has happened?” you may well ask. Well a few things actually. At the June meeting we had the first Subaru crossing of the Simpson Desert video of Murray Gartner, which heralds just over 40 years since its occurrence. Beryl Gartner appreciated our showing of the video recapping their endeavours in the crossing. We had the intrepid groups of Peter & Kate, with Martin and Dot, and Peter D, all in Central Australia doing some of those same outback tracks (roads?). Almost like a tribute, also all in Subarus. Yes, there were mechanical failures, but all returned good and safe. Peter D had managed to return in time for the July meeting and gave a great oral trip report of his journey through the various towns he visited. Martin & Dot returning just before the second week of August, I am sure at the August meeting that he will also provide a brief commentary of his trip. We will probably hold a brief August General Meeting, like the July meeting was, as we have the 2019 Annual General Meeting following it. Unlike last year, we will be having snacks to eat which will be heating up during our General Meeting, so please be patient when you have to endure aromas coming from the kitchen (I am assuming that the oven works, otherwise a backup plan (Plan B) will be enacted. If you are not able to come, please present your apology by the Monday night, to either myself, email to President, or to Martin (Secretary), as it will assist me in determining the quantity of food and drink to bring for the meeting. I would like to see as many people as possible partake in the AGM, as it is our Club and it requires your involvement to continue. We welcome volunteers, to either continue on the Committee, or become a Committee Member. We also welcome volunteers to assist the Committee in a supporting position that does not require you to come to Committee meetings, as not everyone is able to spare the time. We appreciate your involvement. Involvement aids the feeling of “inclusivement”*, as it is our Club. We want the Club to not only survive, but continue to rebuild and grow, as it has over the last 12 months. The contribution of time and effort of all those concerned is appreciated. TRIP REPORTS The “NOT� Mount Terrible Snow Trip By Rick Koster When the winter season approached there was the anticipation of being able to go and enjoy some fun 4WDing in the snow. As the days, weeks and months passed we waited for a favorable snow report to arrive so we could get out on the tracks. That opportunity finally came in August and, after some discussions, the feelers were put out for interested snow seekers and a convoy of three vehicles was formed. It was good to have one of our newer members, Nicholas, come along in his Outback. We arranged to meet at Warburton at 9.00ish to get away by 9.30. Once we had all arrived and got organized we hit the road heading through Warburton towards Reefton. At Reefton we turned left to begin the 20+ kilometres of windy Warburton/ Woods Point road up to Cumberland Junction. Within a few kilometres of driving up the road we were officially on a snow trip as there was the appearance of the fluffy white stuff. The further and higher we travelled the thicker the snow got. We decided to briefly pull over to get some photos of the picturesque scenery. Soon after we were mobile again and the snow kept getting thicker to the point of the bitumen disappearing out of sight below the snow. More and more sightseers began to appear and it was like driving through a school zone at 40 KPH with cars, kids and parents everywhere playing in the snow. We finally reached the Marysville/Woods Point road and made comment on not having seen this much snow there before. We turned right heading for Woods Point and, soon after, turned left leaving the black stuff heading for Big River road. For a short time the snow had all but disappeared. 9
TRIP REPORTS CONT. Shortly we came across the remnants of a fallen tree branch across the track that we had to negotiate but didn't prove to be a problem. We continued on past the campsites and eventually arrived at a small river crossing approx 2 km before our next turn off. After testing the waters for depth and debris it was fine to proceed through with no concerns. The snow was beginning to reappear and we were soon at the turnoff for Hope track which was a short, steep track to take us to Mt Terrible track. I checked with Nicholas to ensure he was happy to proceed up this track in the Outback and he was quite happy to continue on. As we travelled up this track the snow got thicker the higher we got. We were basically travelling on fresh untouched snow. Traction finally became a problem and brought the Outback to a stop. I was impressed with how far it had got given the conditions. The ''L'' series continued to claw its way up a bit further until getting to a narrow off camber part of the track and decided to try and go sightseeing over the edge of a cliff. Time to stop fast! After selecting reverse and trying to sneak back onto the centre of the track, it kept trying to slide toward the edge so it was time to drag out the shovel and dig the snow away from behind the rear wheels back to '' terra firma'' after which we were able to reverse back onto the track. I was within 1 km of Mt Terrible track, but given the hour of the day, and distance still to be travelled, the snow had beaten us from getting to the hut. After reversing to a wider section of track I did a U turn and drove back to the other vehicles where we all fed the worms and caffeine beetles. We spent some time there 10
TRIP REPORTS CONT. where snow balls were made and thrown and a snow man was built. Not sure who enjoyed the chance to throw things at each other more, Dave, or his boys! Sadly it was finally time to start heading home so we began retracing our steps out. We stopped at a couple of the campsites to check them out for future reference. After an afternoon tea break on the track we finally arrived at our original meeting place at Warburton where we ended the trip officially. It was a great day out in the snow! EDITOR’S NOTE On the rare occasion that I was actually in Melbourne on the same day that a club trip was on, I headed along to Wallan last Sunday to meet up with other club members for the Mount Disappointment day trip. Despite only having a few hours out on the tracks (fines and fun will explain more) I enjoyed putting the turbo CVT through its paces and obtaining some great footage in the process. With a GoPro camera in the rear window, a cheaper SPORTS CAM in the front, and with an iPhone and an SLR in hand, I was kept pretty busy capturing video, and snapping photos, of the group as they traversed the challenging tracks we encountered. Watch out for photos in next month’s magazine and videos and photos on Facebook. This month we have a trip report on the recent snow trip to Mount Terrible, courtesy of Rick Koster, with additional photos contributed by Nicholas Leask. Thanks guys. If you have some good footage, or photos, from a club trip just email me and I will organise to get them from you. Large email attachments may not make it through to me but I will come up with a solution. After all, I’m in IT. With the AGM upon us next week I’d be happy to hand over the editorial reins to anyone who is keen to take on this important communications role for the club and has some spare time each month to undertake it. Cup Day long weekend: Woods Point / Jamieson Trip. Mt. Terrible / Mt. Skene western approaches, southern areas below Woods Point including Jericho, Donnelly’s Creek and other gold-rush locations. Anyone interested in accompanying him on a pre-trip to Holey Plains please contact him directly. Strathfieldsaye Homestead: (a heritage property adjacent Lake Wellington). Damian proposed a standing camp to be held at Strathfieldsaye, with trips to surrounding areas. The Holey Plains trip (above) could be an activity based from Strathfieldsaye. There is also an opportunity for community service work assisting with maintenance of the property. Social Trips needed during the period of track closure. General Business 8.1 Peter - Central Australia Trip – Five weeks and one day, 7430km, 2007 SG Forester. No problems, people everywhere, provided highlights of trip route taken, including conducted tour taken, bitumen to Maree, onto Lake Eyre, Colbra, visited actual geographic centre of Australia, onto Alice Springs, Glen Helen, Kings Canyon, Uluru (walked around it), onto Cooper Pedy, Woomera, Peterborough, Pinnaroo and then home. 8.2 Martin’s – progress: Birdsville – reminised; door not shutting on camper, stones to window; Peter& Kate Mynard: suspension support problem. 8.3 Beryl Gartner expressed thanks that we were showing trip on just over 40years of the trip. 8.4 Fundraising – the Committee is looking for a member to volunteer to assist with the chocolates sales. Mark will provide an order form template. 8.5 Bashplates – new members were reminded that David Wilson can assist them with bash plates – see his advertisement in the magazine.

10. Presentation. A video was played of the Simpson Desert crossing by club members 40 years ago. This video was taken by the late Murray Gartner. 11. Meeting closed at 9:50 pm approximately and was followed by supper and the video. 12. Next meeting will be held on Tuesday 27 August 2019, commencing at 8pm, followed by the club AGM. TRIP AND RECOVERY GEAR The aim of all Subaru 4WD Club of Victoria Inc. trips is to have an enjoyable experience in the bush, increasing 4WDing skills and experience, whilst maintaining the highest regard for the safety of individuals, the vehicle and the environment. As a driver you have ultimate responsibility for the safety of your passengers and vehicle. It is the responsibility of any participating driver to contact individual trip leaders for clarification of individual trip requirements and standards. Financial members are encouraged to participate in as many trips as possible to increase confidence and experience. Visitors are welcome subject to the payment of the appropriate levy to cover insurance, but after two visits, should consider membership. Non-financial members are not covered by insurance and may not participate until payment is received. Individual drivers with concerns or queries regarding their vehicle and the trip standard should contact relevant trip leaders. The Subaru 4WD Club of Victoria Inc. recommends that each vehicle carry the following items or equipment on every trip:

Personal details form as specified by FWDV, copy to Trip Leader
2.
Two rated D- Shackles (minimum 3.2t)
3.
Rated snatch strap
4.
Recovery points, front & rear; plus, optional bridle strap, according to vehicle design;
5.
UHF (477Mhz) Channel 16 CB Radio. Ideally in car but hand held are ok provided sufficient battery(s) to last the trip.

Fire extinguisher, accessible to the driver
2.
Spare tyre (full size)
3.
Jack and wheel brace, or equivalent
4.
Emergency supplies (matches, food, water and clothing)
5.
Sufficient fuel, oil and water for the trip and delays
6.
A tyre pressure gauge; compressor (according to the trip)
7.
An axe, bow or chain saw;
8.
A sturdy shovel (collapsible shovels are no good)
9.
Spare parts (appropriate to the nature of the trip)
10.
A tool kit
11.
Personal first aid kit

Your vehicle manual
Any vehicle not carrying at least the first five (5) items of equipment should contact the individual Trip Leader before leaving. Any club member unsure about any of the items of equipment listed above are advised to contact the Trip and Social Coordinator or the Trip Leader concerned. All Trip Leaders carry a complete First Aid Kit in case of emergency. All non-emergency medical needs are expected to be meet by individuals own medical supplies.
