INTRO The Subaru 4WD Club of Victoria Inc. was originally formed over 30 years ago by an enthusiastic group of Subaru owners. Today the club has expanded to include all Subaru 4WD and AWD vehicles, as well as all other makes of AWD, light 4WD and crossover/soft-roader type vehicles. The club aims to participate in the exploration of the Australian countryside without damage to the environment, vehicle or individual. Visitors are most welcome to attend the club’s General Meetings and contact committee members regarding participation in club activities. The club relies on membership fees to offset its running costs, including insurance. Membership fees are payable each year, due on 31 May. Fees for the 2015/16 year were agreed at the general meeting in April 2015 and are as follows:
Member rates: Single: $120 (Seniors card - $110) Joint/family: $140 - (Seniors card - $125). One off joining fee of $10 ($20 for Joint/Family) also applies All annual fees include FWDV affiliation and trip insurance: $47
Non-member trip fee: A trip fee of $15 per adult non-member applies (for insurance purposes)

F R OM T HE P RE SI DE N T President’s Report: January 2016 Happy New Year!! Welcome to the January Subaru 4WD Club magazine… and the first magazine for 2016. I hope you and your family enjoyed a special Christmas and New Year. What a year 2015 was… and here’s to a ripper 2016! This year is a particularly significant year for this club. It marks our 40th year! That’s right; the Subaru 4WD Club of Victoria turns 40 this year. Forty years exploring Australia in Subarus! Incredible. We will celebrate this occasion later in the year. It’s all in the planning – details are coming up soon, so look out in the next magazine for a date to save in the calendar. In the past couple of months, we’ve had a few activities. Firstly, a very successful Christmas Party was enjoyed by all at the Sugarloaf Reservoir in the Christmas Hills. A sincere thank you to everyone who made the day enjoyable, including Meredith and Edith for scouting out the location and securing it early on the morning, Jamie, Mike Dunn, Martin and David Hewitt for cooking the meat perfectly and everyone who whipped up yummy salads and desserts for all. Santa even paid us a visit and looked after those who had been good over the past year! It was a fitting celebration of 2015 for all of us in late November. Our annual Christmas Trip was run and thoroughly enjoyed between Christmas and New Year. Thanks to David for an, as usual, very well organised and very fun trip! Instead of the usual moving trip, Dave opted for an easier, more relaxing standing camp, based at Wheelers Creek Hut. From there, day trips out to Mt Pinnibar, Dartmouth, Gibsons Hut and many other sites were run with some excellent four wheel driving in between. You’ll have to look out for the trip report for more details. Safe to say it was relatively uneventful… except for a couple of small incidents, which you will, no doubt, hear about during ‘Fines and Fun’ at the January meeting. On a personal note, in mid-December, my brother, Jason, and I undertook a trip which included climbing Mt Kosciuszko and then visiting Tom Groggin, Mt Pinnibar, Davies Plain Track, the Poplars, Omeo, Dinner Plain, Mt Hotham and then down to Bright and back to Melbourne via Tolmie, Stringybark Creek and Mansfield. We had spectacular weather and the sights were magnificent. Mt Kosciuszko was a particular highlight. While we had climbed it before, it gets better and better every time. There are two ways up – the easy, shorter way and the hard, longer way; we chose the hard, long way. If you haven’t done it yet, I highly recommend it – add it to the list! Don’t forget that I mentioned late last year that Four Wheel Drive Victoria (FWDV) have invited us to develop a Subaru 4WD Club Touring Route! This would involve us: -
Developing a route, with start and end points, and directions along the way

Listing 5 or so points of interest – like we’re giving a virtual ‘tour’ Classifying the difficulty of the route (easy, medium, difficult, very difficult) Determining trip length and an approximate time to complete Mapping the route
Once we’ve provided the content, Parks Victoria and the Department of Environment, Water, Land and Planning (DEWLP) will create a ‘forest notes’ or an ‘iconic drive’ and promote the Subaru 4WD Club as a result! So, be sure to continue thinking about where we’d like to showcase. On the cards this year is our all-important club training. We are conscious of the fact that this training has taken some time to get off the ground. But it is now close to coming to fruition and we will in the very near future have a weekend dedicated to training new (and even older, more experienced) members in the theory and practical components of four wheel driving. Looking forward to this soon. If you were monitoring our club Facebook page or website over the Christmas/New Year period, you will have noticed the ‘2015 – What A Year!’ video which was added celebrating and highlighting what we got up to in 2015. If you haven’t seen it yet, be sure to head there and watch it. Our traditional ‘Welcome Back!’ BBQ will be on from 6:30pm on 26 January prior to our meeting. Looking forward to your company then where you can catch up on the latest club news, hear trip reports and mingle with other members. March Meeting The March Meeting (29th March) will be held at Berwick Subaru (1 Prestige Place, Narre Warren), there will be chance to test drive vehicles from 6.30pm and the meeting itself will then be held there at the usual time of 8pm. Venue Coordinator Meredith Dale
Photo Competition Our photo competition will once again held at our February meeting (February 23rd). Categories: Best Portrait (photo of a person) Best group photo Best landscape/nature scene Best close-up nature shot (Flower, animal, etc.) Best Subaru action shot Funniest photo
We request all entries to be in by February 16th (1 week prior to the February meeting) to ensure we can collate the presentation. All photos must be entered electronically so please email them to venue@subaru4wdvic.com.au

All photographs submitted must have been taken within the last two years, taken by the person entering the photo, and taken at a club event. There is a limit of one photo per person, per category. Any photographs that have won a prize previously are NOT ELIGIBLE. So rifle through your photographs of club events from the last two years and send them to us. When you send in your photos, please include a brief description of the trip on which they were taken, the category the photo is for and a title for the photo. Trips and Social Events We already have some great trips planned for 2016 and others that are started to be planned. So it looks like we are going to have another great year with the club. This year we will again run most trips with a convoy limit. So if a trip fills quickly there is the opportunity for someone to run another trip on the same weekend. If you have an idea for a trip or event during 2016 please let Jamie and Jean know. If you don’t want to lead it someone else may. If you want to run your first trip or event, again talk with Jamie or Jean. We will provide you with a mentor who can give you advice or can be a co leader with you. We have a Trip Leader pack that includes a check list and other helpful items to assist you. We have started planning for 2016 and have the following trips:

This moving trip will commence at Mansfield, where we will meet in the main street mid-morning. After fuelling (via the servo and the bakery!), we will head for: Tolmie, Powers Lookout, Whitfield, Paradise Falls, Lake Cobbler, The Staircase, King River, Huts: King Hut, Mt No. 3 Hut and Tomahawk Hut Likely camp for the first night is Lake Cobbler and for the second night Tomahawk Hut or a trackside camp depending on how busy it is out on the tracks. More details to come in the lead up to the trip.

TRIP AND RECOVERY GEAR The aim of all Subaru 4WD Club of Victoria Inc. trips is to have an enjoyable experience in the bush, increasing 4WD’ing skills and experience, whilst maintaining the highest regard for the safety of individuals, the vehicle and the environment. As a driver you have ultimate responsibility for the safety of your passengers and vehicle. It is the responsibility of any participating driver to contact individual trip leaders for clarification of individual trip requirements and standards. Financial members are encouraged to participate in as many trips as possible to increase confidence and experience. Visitors are welcome subject to the payment of the appropriate levy to cover insurance, but after two visits, should consider membership. Non-financial members are not covered by insurance and may not participate until payment is received. Individual drivers with concerns or queries regarding their vehicle and the trip standard should contact relevant trip leaders. The Subaru 4WD Club of Victoria Inc. recommends that each vehicle carry the following items or equipment on every trip: 1.

Major payments included engraving of club trophies, printing of the club’s magazine, and supplies for the Christmas party. Secretary Club’s annual registration – recently informed that it is now all done online. Need to follow this up. Vice-President Nothing to report. President The club’s Christmas party was very successful with 46 members present. Moving the annual awards to the Christmas party proved to be a successful move.

Club’s Iconic Drive for 4WD Victoria Something suitable, maybe of a medium rating, for unmodified Subarus. Will become part of 4WD Victoria’s pack of iconic drives. Will trial the suitability of the Castlemaine trip for being one.

Annual Awards Review Various members have submitted suggestions for additional awards for club members. Some of the suggestions include: Quill / Scribe award – editor nominated award for best trip report submitted during the year. Trip Leader award – excellence in trip leadership. Nominations made by members and decided by the committee. Have a perpetual trophy. The WTF award – most memorable incident on a club trip or event. Suggested that we not use a long weekend for any “out of Melbourne” event as we have very few long weekends for four wheel driving. Committee agreed that the club should have: A formal meal (lunch or dinner) at a Melbourne location fully catered for on a Saturday in early October
(8th or 15th) – Aquarium or similar. Organise for 100 people. Club subsidy would be restricted to current club members.

Les reminded members of the battery recycling fundraising program. So, bring along your old car batteries. 4WD Victoria – club member benefit card has finally been agreed to by 4WD Australia at their recent member. Damian was able to source some more Brumby “Matchbox” toys and duly presented them to Les and Jamie. Martin – will soon have a SubaXtreme bullbar suitable for a Forest series 2 (03-05). Michael D – exhaust jacks do not work on dual exhaust vehicles. Richard S – many thanks for being allowed to participate on the recent Border Track trip. Also brought some surplus magazine from a nearby news agent.

10. Guest Speaker / Presentation John Turbill gave a very informative presentation on the Freshield vacuum sealing system. John also presented on the 11th Australian 4WD Gathering in South Australia near Renmark on 19th – 22nd August 2016. Cost is $185 per adult.
11. The Lucky door prize was won by Anthony Saunders.
12. The next meeting will be held on Tuesday 26th January 2016 commencing at 8pm, and preceded by a barbeque tea at 6:30pm in the next-door park.
