INTRODUCTION TO THE SUBARU 4WD CLUB The Subaru 4WD Club of Victoria Inc. was originally formed over 30 years ago by an enthusiastic group of Subaru owners. Today the club has expanded to include all Subaru 4WD and AWD vehicles, as well as all other makes of AWD, light 4WD and crossover/soft-roader type vehicles. The club aims to participate in exploration of the Australian countryside without damage to the environment, vehicle or individual. Visitors are most welcome to attend the club’s General Meetings and contact committee members regarding participation in club activities. The club relies on membership fees to offset its running costs, including insurance. Membership fees are payable each year, due on 31 May. Fees for the 2012/13 year were agreed at the general meeting in March 2012 and are as follows: Interstate: $100 (Seniors card - $95) � Single: $110 (Seniors card - $100) Joint/family: $115 - (Seniors card - $100) (All fees includes affiliation and Insurance: $43) A trip fee of $10 per adult non-member applies (for insurance purposes) Please contact the membership officer for further information regarding membership, including pro-rata and monthly rates.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT Welcome to the July magazine and my last president’s report for the club year. Each year, around this time, I have considered this report to be my swansong, expecting someone to come along to the AGM and dethrone me. After a number of years in the president’s chair I have almost given up on this actually happening. As it is, there are no nominations for the role of president at this stage, however that does not mean that I will be automatically accepting nomination. I will expand on this later in my report however, in the meantime, let’s look at what has been happening over the last month of the club year. As usual I am rushing to complete this report after spending way too much time completing my AGM report. With that out of the way, thanks to a 1.00 am finish last night, I can now get back to completing my monthly magazine contribution. One good thing about the electronic magazine distribution is that Martin gives me a little more time to get my report to him, fortunately. Without this extra time you would be seeing a couple of blank pages at the start of the magazine. In the last month we had our June meeting at which Jessica gave an impromptu first aid kit review. This was in place of a presentation on Xtreme fuel additive which had to be postponed due to the presenter being unable to make it to the meeting. We will re-schedule this presentation later in the year. Thanks go out to Jessica for coming to our rescue. A couple of days after the general meeting I attended the association general meeting. This was fairly well attended but there were a few clubs definitely missing. An excellent presentation on dual battery systems and vehicle lighting was given by Alan Johnson, founder of Piranha Off Road products. A few interesting things came out of the presentation, and discussion after it, including Victoria Police focusing on illegal HID installations, lift kits and driving lights. It was actually quite interesting to see the looks on some of the attendees who clearly had no idea about the correct fitment of driving and HID lighting systems, the maximum height of lift kits, etc. It is certainly worth keeping up with vehicle regulations as far as what is allowable in the vehicle modification space. Alan is very knowledgeable in this area and is someone who may be a possible presenter for a club meeting in the future. The meeting also provided some insight into the association’s negotiations with the state government regarding ongoing funding through the DSE. Fortunately the news on that front was very positive with an additional $100,000 being granted to the association to support its ongoing initiatives with DSE and Parks Victoria. The association will also be moving forward with the joint branded

PRESIDENT’S REPORT membership card so expect to see your new card in the near future. Last weekend we held our annual Christmas in July event. Again Peter and Jean graciously opened their house for the club to enjoy a magnificent Christmas feast. Peter again did a great job with the BBQ for the main course and then followed it up with one of his fabulous desserts. Jean produced a wonderful appetizer, risotto balls which everyone seemed to enjoy immensely. I believe that the recipe will be published in this month’s magazine for those who want to attempt this tasty treat themselves. Thanks go out to Jean for her excellent organizing of the night, including some great door prizes and a fun guessing competition, jointly won by Dale and myself. Dale, not being a big fan of soft lollies, generously gave his share of the lolly jar to me, something that my waistline did not appreciate, even if I did. There was also plenty of assistance in serving the meal and then cleaning up afterwards. I am sure that everyone had a most enjoyable night. At the event we also drew our special effort, with interesting results. Phil’s name was drawn out for first prize, being either the first aid kit, that he had donated, or a club CB radio that does not fit in his car. A re-draw resulted in Bob taking home the CB radio with Les Scott winning the picnic backpack and David Hewitt winning the tyre repair kit. I would like to thank everyone who purchased or sold tickets and congratulations to those lucky members who won. As I mentioned earlier, the AGM and club elections are just about here. While I have previously accepted nominations for the president’s position I am not so sure about doing so for the coming year. This is not anything against the position itself but rather against the current structure of the committee where we have a number of vacant positions being covered by myself and the rest of the committee, not always too successfully. This is an untenable position that we have found ourselves in over the last couple of years which I no longer want to see continue, under my leadership at least. We really need to fill every position at the AGM election in order for the club to function effectively and I will be seriously considering my position if we cannot full all committee positions on the night. Remember, it is your club and the committee is one way of being closely involved with how the club is run. Please see me or one of the committee if you want to be nominated or know someone that should be but is too shy to seek nomination themselves. Well that’s all from me this month. NOTICE TO MEMBERS Notice is hereby given to members that the Annual General Meeting of the Subaru 4WD Club of Victoria Inc will be held on Tuesday, 31st July 2012 at the South Camberwell Tennis Club rooms, 322 Burke Road, Glen Iris commencing after the finish of the July general meeting. === Order of business will include: ● Confirmation of the minutes of the 2011 AGM. ● Presentation of the 2012 annual report. ● Presentation of 2012 annual financial statement. ● General business. ● Presentation of annual and other awards. ● Election of officers of the club and ordinary members of the committee. Nominations for committee positions must be submitted to the club secretary by no later than 7 days prior to the Annual General Meeting. However, if a committee position has no nominations by the time of the Annual General Meeting, the club’s constitution allows for the acceptance of nominations from the floor of the meeting. Special Resolutions If a member wishes to bring an item of business to the Annual General Meeting that requires a special resolution, 21 days written notice of the special resolution must be given to all club members. The trip will of course depend on the weather, and if there actually is any snow. This will also determine the location of the trip. More details will be forthcoming as we get closer to August.

LEONGATHA NAVIGATION NIGHT TRIP Saturday 22 – Sunday 23 September Time 5.00pm for dinner, 7.00pm for trip briefing, first car off at approx' 7.30pm Trip Standard Social/Easy to Very Difficult Contact Michael Dickman, email events@subaru4wdvic.com.au This trip will have a variety of levels of difficulty, depending on the choices you make, making it suitable for all members. Michael is thinking of organising dinner at the local pub before heading off on the trip. Let him know if you're interested and he'll organise it. We'll meet at Kerry and his home, Kooinda, for the pre-navigation briefing. Start/Finish point will be the Leongatha Football Ground. WeKerry and Michael have limited accommodation at Kooinda for 5 (one room with a double bed, one room with 2 single beds and a single bed room), on a first come, first serve basis. Accommodation is also available at the motels or at the caravan park, either camp/caravan sites or cabins. Michael can supply phone numbers. Page: 8

We are looking for volunteers to be able to look after the stand. Any time you are available will be welcome. It is a great opportunity to meet other clubs, and even do a little bit of “gear-freaking”.
GOLDFIELDS HERITAGE AREA Saturday 20 – Sunday 21 October Trip Standard Social/Easy Contact Martin Foot, email editor@subaru4wdvic.com.au A weekend based in Maldon in central Victoria, with local trips on the Saturday to heritage mining sites in the surrounding countryside, and a navigation run. On Sunday there is an option to visit the annual Mt Tarrengower Hill Climb (a heritage vehicle and motorcycle event run by Bendigo Car Club – there is a small cost involved to view). Tent and camper accommodation available at Dot and Martin’s property on the edge of town, or at the local caravan park. BBQ or pub options on Saturday night depending on weather.

TRIP & SOCIAL REPORT The Grampians are an outstanding geological feature in western Victoria. This trip will aim to traverse the ranges so is rated at medium as some tracks can be a bit scrabbly. Discussions are being had with Parks Victoria so there may be access to some MVO tracks as well.
TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE, CAIRNS 14 November Trip Standard to be determined Contact Jessica Walsh, events@subaru4wdvic.com.au Cairns is the only place in the world to view the total solar eclipse on November 14 2012 from land. Allow about a week before and a week after the eclipse for travel and some touring in the area. If you would like more information on the eclipse itself, go to www.eclipse2012.org.au The eclipse is due at about 6.45am (yes, am) and will be in an area that is subject to frequent cloud cover at that time of year, so there may in fact be nothing to 'see' - apart from the darkness, that is. Because of this, the trip is still in the concept stage, and may not go ahead. Please let me know if you are interested.

TRIP REPORTS 2012 SNOW TRIP PRE-TRIP Sunday 1 July 2012 by Katie Mynard We were to meet at Erica at 8:30am, but due to unforseen circumstances (Peter’s Mum stopping by as we were about to leave) we were about 15 minutes late. When we did arrive at Erica, Peter and Jean, Jamie and Michael were waiting for us. Fortunately we were not the last ones there as Paul was a few minutes behind. After a check to make sure everyone had chains etc, we headed off in search of the white stuff. After consultation with Jamie, it was decided that we head off to Matlock via Aberfeldy in the hope that we would find snow a little quicker than going around the other way. We stopped off at the Thomson Dam just out of Erica to see how much water there was since our last trip – you could no longer see the smaller water tower and the island was an island once more, so there’s much more than last time. We continued our trip, going along Walhalla Road. The road was reasonable, with a few ruts and corrugations, but nothing to be concerned about. We drove into Aberfeldy, seeing our first glimpse of snow on the sides of the road (yay – that means no fine for no snow on the snow trip!). Little did we know what we’d just let ourselves in for. The next section of Walhalla Road was not pleasant. The road was bare rock in many sections that not even a grader would have been able to repair. Our poor cars (ours especially) were not happy to be on this road at all. We stopped twice to try and figure out where the horrible noise in our car was coming from, with ideas ranging from suspension to tie rod ends and everything in between. We eventually continued on, hoping for the best. Page: 11
TRIP REPORTS Arriving at Matlock – we had snow, and lots of it! We had lunch at the picnic spot in the middle of town. Thank goodness it was covered and had some walls, otherwise we would have been covered in the falling snow. Continuing on, we headed in the direction of Warburton. We decided to see what was at the Matlock Fire Tower as most of us had never been there before. What we found was plenty of snow and mud. Many photos were taken by all. We then continued on. We drove past Martin’s favourite spot to kill clutches – Martin, you’ll be please to know that the smell of your clutch has finally gone from the area [so relieved to hear that! - Ed.]. We drove past the Jessop Airstrip and headed back towards Erica so that Michael could return his hire chains. On the way back we detoured up the road to Mt St Gwinear to check how much snow was there. There was not much, but we drove through a lot of falling snow, which everyone enjoyed. We then came back down the road and finished our trip at Erica.

TUCKER BOX RISOTTO BALLS by Jean Bellis Finely chop 2 onions, fry until soft Add 1 litre water and bring to boil Add: ● 800 grams risotto rice, ● 2 tablespoons stock powder (not Beef) cover and leave until cold Stir together: ● 1 cup grated cheese ● 1 cup grated parmesan ● 1/2 cup fresh crushed garlic ● 3 eggs Combine with rice mix shape into balls Roll in flour, then egg and flour wash ( 2 eggs & 2 cups milk) Then roll in breadcrumbs then egg and milk then breadcrumbs again Chill for 2 hours Deep fry until golden and hot in the middle (deep fry a few at a time) Can be frozen They are time consuming to make, but everyone enjoyed them!

TRIP REPORTS CHRISTMAS IN JULY Saturday 21 July 2012 by Martin Foot Once again the Bellis’s kindly hosted the annual Christmas in July social gathering. As entree, we enjoyed risotto balls courtesy of Jean (see opposite for recipe). Then following Grace led by Elaine, we enjoyed the sumptuous roast meats and veges, finished off with a variety of tasty puddings and desserts.
Thanks to those who brought presents for under the tree. These became door prizes. The “2012 Special Effort” raffle was also drawn, with Bob Marshall claiming the UHF 80 channel radio, Les Scott (not present) the backpack picnic set and David Hewett the tyre repair tool. The First Aid kit kindly donated by the Milkins was not claimed and will be reserved for another occasion. Thanks to Damian for organising it. Thanks also to those who assisted with preparation and clearing up, you know who you are!
And of course special thanks to our hostess, Jean for all her organisation of another most successful event. A very pleasant night was had by all. Page: 17

General Business 7.1 Michael Dickman has purchased a Subaru “Uglie” from Swan Hill. 7.2 Use of the Buchan land – it is restricted to club members only and with prior notice to the property owner. 7.3 Replacement tyres – Damian got the tyres on his Forester replaced courtesy Yokohama due to the set only lasting 30,000 km. Should be able to get 120,000 out of ATS tyres running at 36psi and regularly rotating the tyres between front and back. 7.4 Subaru 2003 Outback – water can seep into the tailgate lights if the seals around the lights have perished (as Damian recently found out). 7.5 Michael Hartshorne has recently put a new engine chip in his car. It has substantially improved the engine performance. 8. Fines and Fun 8.1 Nametags Michael Hartshorne, Peter Mynard. 8.2 Last to Meeting Michael Dickman. 8.3Trips 8.3.1 Lake Mungo Michael Dickman – got a flat tyre on the trip up to Mildura. Jessica – lack of kindling for the campfire. Michael Dickman and Stephen Whittaker – for having their photos taken sitting on the old toilet at the old homestead. Total fines collected - $2.70. 9. SUBARU NEWS SUBARU XV 2.0I-S CVT LATEST REPORT (excerpts) by HAITHAM RAZAGUI, GoAuto.com.au, 19/07/2012 We were impressed with the XV after our drive at the launch in the summer, so we decided to live with – and almost in – one for a week during winter, including a trip to the bush to check out its mud-plugging ability. […] We and other members of the motoring media lamented the lethargic nature of Subaru’s efficient new FB 2.0-litre petrol engine after driving the XV and Impreza at their respective Australian launch events earlier this year, but now we suspect the powerplant just needed a little more running in. Even linked with the automatic continuously variable transmission (CVT), we found the engines of the XV and Impreza had matured like a fine wine, providing adequate pulling power around town, enough grunt to cope easily with a trek up Victoria’s Lake Mountain and sufficient ‘welly’ for maintaining momentum on sloppy mud ascents when off-roading. At all times the four-cylinder Boxer was smooth, free-revving and quiet, with a more pronounced flat-four thrum accompanied by CVT whine only as revs climbed above 4500rpm under load. […] Although the XV bangs over larger pot-holes in a way the larger Forester doesn’t, felt twitchier on gravel roads than its big brother (despite a 20mm longer wheelbase) and its relatively long front overhang caused a few graunching concerns about approach angles, the high ground clearance provided confidence on rutted tracks and when straddling boulders. Best of all was the all-wheel-drive system and Subaru’s electronic stability and traction control systems, which kept the XV on the straight and narrow with incredible accuracy while reacting impressively quickly to the everchanging dynamics of driving on slippery, rain-soaked trails with long sections consisting of deep mud. Without low range, hill-descent control, locking diffs or special tyres, the XV confidently tackled terrain that would probably be unpassable – or at least with a great deal of effort – for most of its competitors. COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES Minutes of the meeting of the committee of the Subaru 4WD Club of Victoria Inc held on Tuesday 3rd July 2012 at the home of Andrew Jantke starting at 8pm. 1. Present Andrew Jantke, Martin Foot, Peter Bellis, Bob Marshall, Dale Rebgetz, Damian Stock, Jessica Walsh. 2. Apologies: Phil Milkins 3. Quorum A quorum was achieved with 7 committee members present. 4. Minutes of the Previous Meeting 4.1 Minutes of the June 2012 committee meeting were accepted with the following amendments: 4.1.1 The next committee is July 2012, not September 2012. 4.2 Business Arising from the Minutes and Outstanding Actions 4.2.1 Spatial Vision – Damian has been given a general contact number from 4WD Victoria. 4.2.2 Raffle – only sold 90 tickets so far. 4.2.3 MS-Publisher – defer purchase until the new editor is determined. 4.2.4 Meeting at Subaru Glen Waverley – offer still stands. Have also received an offer from Subaru Docklands. 4.2.5 Cambur Subaru – had no response from them yet regarding advertising and on-going relationship. Have also spoke to Combined Servicing about re-advertising in the club magazine. 4.2.6 Club Constitution Changes – yet to be lodged with Consumer Affairs Victoria. 4.2.7 Pre-2003 Club Website – have requested Mark Tyssen to shut it down. 5. Will be a high tea at the Sebel Heritage Yarra Valley. Date and information to be confirmed. Cost is $45 per person. ● Laneways tour in the City of Melbourne – need to confirm a date with Bev Davison. 6.3 Venue ● ● ● ●

any Google search. Martin will continue the conversation with Mark Tyssen to remove the original website from public view. Publication costs have been contained in the last few months since a lot of members have switched from paper copy to electronic copy, and switching the club’s logo in the magazine from solid to outline. Costs for last month’s magazine (including postage) were $59.
6.6 Treasurer ● Current bank account balance is $2,520.55 ● Received $1,417 in membership fees in the last month (doesn’t include the affiliation fee). ● Have paid 4WD Victoria’s affiliation fee ($968). ● Annual accounts have been finalised for 2011/12. Club had a deficit of $860 for the year. 6.7 Secretary: Nothing to report. 6.8 President ● FWD Victoria Delegate’s Meeting ● The Association has agreed to print the joint club membership cards at no cost to the clubs. However, there is no sponsorship/discount program behind the cards yet. ● The president and treasurer of the Association have resigned in the last month. ● Most 4WD clubs’ membership fees are around the $100 mark with a range from $90 to $150. ● Club’s PO Box – it the GPO box location still worth the time and hassle or should it be relocated to another more suitable and accessible location? It was suggested that the post office box be relocated to Mount Waverley where it would be easily accessible by train or car. ACTION

Nominations have been received for the committee positions of Secretary, Resources, and Trip & Social. Nominations will be sought for all other committee positions at the AGM. Supper: ● ● ●
