INTRO The Subaru 4WD Club of Victoria Inc. was originally formed over 40 years ago by an enthusiastic group of Subaru owners. Today the club has expanded to include all Subaru 4WD and AWD vehicles, as well as all other makes of AWD, light 4WD and crossover/soft-roader type vehicles. The club aims to participate in the exploration of the Australian countryside without damage to the environment, vehicle or individual. Visitors are most welcome to attend the club’s General Meetings and contact committee members regarding participation in club activities. The club relies on membership fees to offset its running costs, including insurance. Membership fees are payable each year, due on 31 May. Fees for the 2017/18 year were agreed at the general meeting in May 2017 and are as follows:
Member rates: Single: $125 (Seniors card - $115) Joint/family: $145 - (Seniors card - $130). One off joining fee of $15 ($30 for Joint/Family) also applies All annual fees include FWDV affiliation and trip insurance: $51 Members who choose not to receive a hard copy of the magazine are eligible for a $25 discount
Non-member trip fee: A trip fee of $15 per adult non-member applies (for insurance purposes)

F R OM T HE P RE S I DE N T President’s Report, July 2017 Sometimes we think of winter as a quiet time. Lots of the better tracks are closed during the wetter, colder months – so they are still in good condition when opened again in summer. That coupled with a lack of long weekends typically means the trips are less adventurous or more social. This is also the time of the year when many people head north on bigger trips. Travelling north can mean all the way to the northern hemisphere for holidays, enjoying their summer season. However, it can also mean heading to central or northern Australia, where the temperatures can be dangerously hot in summer, yet are quite mild at this time of the year. In the last few years we have had a couple of trips across the Simpson Desert in the July-August time-frame. Another such crossing is scheduled in 2019 to mark the 40th anniversary of the first Simpson crossing by members of our club. Stay tuned for details closer to the time. The other thing that sometimes happens to July is it turns into another silly/festive season, with Christmas in July events. (Can some please explain to me why July is the chosen month and not June?) Already I have been to two such events this month, with a third scheduled for the 29th of this month. That, of course, is our own Christmas in July event, hosted this year by Mike and Meredith Dale. July is also the month to look into a deal on a new Subaru. They have just released their second generation XV, and by all reports it is a very good car. So that they can show it off, this month’s meeting is being hosted by Berwick Subaru. If you would like to test drive one, or some other model in the Subaru range, you can do so before the meeting, but you will need to pre-book with them. Please note, this month’s meeting is at Berwick Subaru, and starts half an hour earlier, at 7:30pm. See you there.

General Meeting Notice The Subaru 4WD Club holds its monthly general meeting on the last Tuesday of the month (no meeting in December) at the club house of the South Camberwell Tennis Club, 332 Burke Road, Glen Iris (just off the Monash Freeway) starting at 8pm – unless otherwise specified/advised. The meeting is open to all members and visitors. The usual agenda of the general meeting includes: Welcome of members and visitors. Review and acceptance of previous general meeting’s minutes. Notice of AGM Notice is hereby given to members that the Annual General Meeting of the Subaru 4WD Club of Victoria Inc will be held on Tuesday, 29th August 2017 at the South Camberwell Tennis Club rooms, 322 Burke Road, Glen Iris commencing after the finish of the August 2017 general meeting. Order of business will include:
Confirmation of the minutes of the 2016 annual general meeting. Presentation of the 2017 annual report. Presentation of 2017 annual financial statement. General business. Presentation of awards. Election of officers of the club and ordinary members of the committee.
Nominations for committee positions should be submitted to the club secretary by no later than 7 days prior to the Annual General Meeting. However, on the day, nominations for committee positions will be accepted from the floor of the meeting. TRIP REPORT Craig’s Hut Mt Sterling Sunday 4 June I arrive at the Mansfield meeting place after fuelling up and was met by Duncan and Lee shortly after. Lee went and got coffees whilst Duncan and I 11 | P a g e
discussed route options. As it was only the two vehicles we decided to add a difficult track option and also visit Bindaree Falls. A week earlier Mt Sterling was blanketed in snow, but all week it had been sunny so I had made the call that snow chains would not be required. We headed off on the road to Mt Buller and Mt Sterling. It was a clear sky and you could see the snow on the summit of Mt Buller. At Mirimbah we turned on to the gravel road to Mt Sterling and soon encountered the first patches of snow and ice! Pulling into Telephone Box Junction Lee radios to say my right rear tyre had suddenly gone flat We had planned to stop here to air down but having to change the tyre allowed some slower moving traffic to get ahead of us. It was very cold around 3 deg C, so we were quickly back on the road. A group of 4wds ahead of us were painfully slow. The conditions on the Circuit Road varied from mud to light snow and ice to dusty, depending upon the orientation of the sun. Due to lack of local knowledge, the leader of the convoy in front missed the turn off to Craig’s Hut. We quickly took advantage of the situation and overtook the rear of the convoy and turn onto the access track to Craig’s. Due to the snow melt, Clear Hills Track was boggy and slippery, and very busy with traffic in the opposite direction. Arriving at the car park it was busy like Chadstone on Boxing Day! We found a spot to park and then went off to explore. Craig’s Hut is not a historic high country cattle mens hut. It was built as a set for the 1982 film the Man from Snowy River. The hut that now stands there is not the original as it has been burnt down and replaced several times due to bush fires. After taking in the views we had lunch. We then headed up Clear Hills Track towards the summit and again encountered heavy traffic at times coming back down. Some of the drivers did not seem to want to give way. This section of Clear Hills was very wet and slippery and both of us got to the Monument Track turn off without difficulty. And there was plenty of snow!

At this point Duncan thought he should lead, but I was comfortable up front. There was no traffic on the Monument Track. After a steep climb, we began to ascend. It was steep, it was muddy, it was slippery and then we hit the ice! It might have been 3 deg C, but I broke out into a sweat as I slewed sideways down an icy slope, with no hope of stopping that is, until I nudged into the embankment. I radioed Lee & Duncan and told them to stay put. I was not able to move; the wheels just would not grip.
On assessing the situation Duncan would have to christen his winch. I staggered and slipped my way up the slope to meet and discuss the recovery. Lee ignored my advice that the slope was slippery as she headed down with the winch cable and promptly landed on her backside!

With the winch cable attached and pulling me backwards my Forester was like a pendulum and eventually pointed down the slope. After disconnecting the winch cable, I started to head down again. The section after the next wash out was again very icy and I managed to descend without incident. Then anyone listening to the UHF would have heard Lee’s call over the radio, “Paul I have bad news, Duncan’s just strained his sphincter muscle!” “What?” “We just went sideways down the next section” “Oh, I told you it was slippery!”. We were all kind of happy to see the end of the Monument Track!!

From here we headed down Bindaree track to Bindaree Falls. Bindaree Falls are quite picturesque as you are able to walk behind the falls and look out through it. At the base of the falls we met a 4wd group from Albury who were quite friendly. Chatting to them when we got back to the car park, one of them got quite excited when he discovered we had come down the Monument Track, they had come around via the Circuit. Obviously impressed one of them calls out to his mates “HEY HE WENT DOWN MONUMENT IN THAT!”, pointing at my Forester parked in front of their very serious looking 4wds. They warned us before we departed about ice on the Circuit when heading towards Howqua Gap. Several sections of the track ahead were indeed very icy. We stopped briefly at Howqua Gap to look at the huts before heading back down to Mirimbah to air up. We stopped several times for photo opportunities in the snow. While airing up at Mirimbah, Duncan managed to find some snow on some barriers that had been brought down from Mt Buller and promptly lobbed some snow balls at an unsuspecting Lee. From here we headed back to Mansfield and parted company. Trip participants:

TRIP AND RECOVERY GEAR The aim of all Subaru 4WD Club of Victoria Inc. trips is to have an enjoyable experience in the bush, increasing 4WD’ing skills and experience, whilst maintaining the highest regard for the safety of individuals, the vehicle and the environment. As a driver, you have ultimate responsibility for the safety of your passengers and vehicle. It is the responsibility of any participating driver to contact individual trip leaders for clarification of individual trip requirements and standards.

Financial members are encouraged to participate in as many trips as possible to increase confidence and experience. Visitors are welcome subject to the payment of the appropriate levy to cover insurance, but after two visits, should consider membership. Non-financial members are not covered by insurance and may not participate until payment is received. Individual drivers with concerns or queries regarding their vehicle and the trip standard should contact relevant trip leaders. The Subaru 4WD Club of Victoria Inc. recommends that each vehicle carry the following items or equipment on every trip: 1.
