F R OM T HE P RE SI DE N T President’s Report: March Magazine Last year Jamie and Les ran a fun-and-games event that was popular and enjoyed by all who attended. Word got out, so when they ran it again this year it was even more popular – and it lived up to expectations. The format was simple in concept but lots of planning and preparation went into it. Thank you to all those that helped make it happen – Les, Jamie, his two nephews, Kerry, Graham, and Jamie’s sister for allowing us the use of her property. A couple of weeks earlier there was a very enjoyable bike ride on the Warburton Trail – run by Kerry and Graham. Not everything has to be hardcore 4WDing. Do you have an idea for a club trip or social activity? Perhaps something you would like to do (or have done), something that might make for a great shared experience? Speak to your committee and they will help you make it happen. Do you like driving, or would you rather be driven? Subaru has had their EyeSight driver assist feature for a little while now; it seems to be a useful and effective driving aid, albeit far short of doing the actual driving – that is a little more difficult but is being developed. As of February this year Subaru has joined the list of companies with a permit to test autonomous driving technology on Californian roads. At last count there were 27 companies with permits – many well known automotive manufacturers, and a mixed bag of others including some I have never heard of. Whether we like it or not (but I believe most people will like it) it won’t be too many more years before we will be buying affordable, self-driving cars. Imagine that regular commute through heavy traffic, but being able to catch up on some sleep, or play with your phone or other gadget – safely! It could be a very attractive proposition for many. On the other hand, I am sensing an increased interest in older vehicles – is it nostalgia? New vehicles are undoubtedly better than vehicles 20+ years older, better in just about every measure. So what is it about the older vehicles that is better? Not much. The experience is relatively raw, longer drives are much more tiring, possibly no power steering or air conditioning, 6|Page
dust gets in everywhere. But there is a connection between the car, the driver, and the environment that does not exist in the latest vehicles. Modern cars are becoming much safer, more boring, and easier to drive; they are a means to get from point A to point B and they do that well. However, if the driving experience or the journey is important to you, then maybe the latest and greatest might not be the optimal choice. If only life was simple – like old vehicles! Dale Rebgetz President.

This 8-day ‘epic’ high country trip will be a challenging, but very spectacular, one – a fun, social, interesting and scenic trip. It will begin with a walk up Australia’s highest mountain; Mt Kosciuszko. This walk is optional – though we are taking the easier 3.5 hour return trip from Thredbo on the raised metal walkway which includes the chairlift – so it is suitable for walkers of all levels. Then, the trip will take on four wheel driving challenges tackling some iconic and special spots in Victoria’s high country, including: -
Mt Pinnibar Davies Plain The Poplars Buckwong Hut

TRIP REPORT High country Trip By Jean Bellis Monday 26th December 2016 This year the Christmas trip was not starting until the 27 December. As we were spending Christmas with my family this year and would be taking the XV we were able to have the Forester nearly packed before we left. On Boxing Day all we needed to do was shop for fresh food and pack it in the car. With the car packed we took a leisurely drive to Bairnsdale where we spent the night at a motel. We enjoyed a lovely Indian meal at a local restaurant that evening.
11 | P a g e
Tuesday 27th December 2016 The next morning, after a very relaxed buffet breakfast at the motel, we did some last minute shopping. Dave had suggested that we go and check out some possible sites for our first night’s camp. We headed out on the Great Alpine Road and turned off at Sarsfield onto the Eleven Mile Road. The plan was to find a campsite on the Nicholson River. After some track clearing, we turned down a very overgrown track which led to a very small and overgrown campsite with difficult access to the river. Back out onto the main track with some more track clearing before again turning down a small track that took us to another overgrown and small campsite. Looking at the map we then decided to explore some other tracks and possible campsites listed on the map. One track had a tree that was too large for us to move and another had a gate across it. We finally found the start of a track that looked promising but it had a sign saying “Private Property ahead”. Peter decided that we would give this a go. Finally, the track opened up into a large open clearing which would make a perfect campsite. We stopped here for morning tea before mapping a route that we could take back out onto the main road. We were looking for a route that would provide a bit more interest when we lead the others back in that might keep us off some of the excellent gravel roads. The plan was in meet in the carpark at the back on McDonalds in Bairnsdale. We arrived and put out a call and discovered that Peter Devine and, to our surprise, Fran were already there. Fran had had other plans which had not eventuated so the night before decided to join Peter. We decided to have lunch while we waited for the others that were still some way off. We pulled out the chairs and set up on the nature strip. We were soon joined by Steve, then Rick and Josh, and finally Dave, his dad Rob and Anthony and Justin. After a bit of last minute shopping everyone were ready to go. There were five cars in the convoy due to a few last minute cancellations for a number of reasons. We turned off the Great Alpine Road and headed along some well maintained tracks enjoying the wonderful trees. A short cut over a hill provided a detour that most decided to take. It wasn’t long before we arrived at our camp turn off and then into camp. Rob and the boys found wood and got a fire going while the rest of us set up for the night. The rain came down and after that it was extremely muggy and the mosquitoes came out to play. The rest of the afternoon was spent relaxing and just enjoying the wonderful campsite. At one stage Justin and Anthony entertained us by making smoke rings from the glowing ends of long sticks.

Wednesday 28th December 2016 The next morning the kookaburras were up early but most of us had a leisurely breakfast and pack up. I decided to drive the first section, as this would be my first opportunity to drive the Forrester since the new springs and extra lift. We followed the Nicholson Creed Road. Due to the rain in the area we had a few little creek crossings. Peter D had trouble getting up one little hill with a sharp right hand turn but a second attempt got him up. As we needed to get across to Tambo Crossing, Dave picked a track and off we went. The further along it we went the more overgrown it got with the smaller cars faring better than Dave’s. Dave told us to wait while he went ahead over a creek to see what the track ahead was like. Soon the call came to follow him with a message to Peter D “to give it a bit of stick as he came up out of the creek.” Peter only heard the “give it some stick”. One second he was on the
track in front of us and the next he had disappeared into the overgrowth and was gone. We then heard a loud noise as he hit something as he went into the creek and up the other side and surprised Dave by appearing behind him so quickly. Morning tea was a wonderful spot in open farmland on the top of the Tambo Spur Rd complete with a table. We dropped down onto the Great Alpine Rd and on to Ensay. Here we turned off to Bentley’s Plain and the Moscow Villa for lunch. We took group photographs here. After lunch I thought I heard a squeaking noise in the car but Peter couldn’t hear it. A bit further on we both heard it and thinking that we might have a stick dragging
13 | P a g e
called Rick who said we didn’t. The noise stopped. A short time later it started again and this time Peter thought we had a picked up a stone. We stopped and reversed and came forward a few times but the noise was still there. Rick and Steve both came and confirmed that we had a stone stuck and we could take the wheel off this evening at camp. Over the rest of the afternoon the noise came and went but didn’t seem to get any worse. Finally, the noise stopped and we decided that the stone must have dislodged itself. We came into mobile phone range and a message from Mike Dunn revealed that there was a severe weather warning for the area with heavy rains. Mike had decided, because of the weather, he would not be meeting us at Buckwong Creek Hut. Contact was also made with Jessica and she was still planning to come. We arrived at Nunnong Plain to find lots of groups camped there but the area we normally use was still free with no close neighbours. We set up camp and most people made use of the stream for a wash. The rest of the afternoon and evening was spent relaxing. The one piece of excitement was when a girl from the camp on the other side of the creek came to ask if someone would come and kill the large snake that had just crawled through their campsite and was in the fallen tree. Our advice was to leave it alone. As the evening progressed the wind picked up and the temperature dropped. Some of us repositioned our cars to give a bit more protection to our tents from the wind. As we moved our car the squeal in the right rear wheel started again. The plan was to take it off in the morning to investigate. Thursday 29th December 2016 We woke to a very wet and windy morning with no one keen to venture out of their tents. Eventually we did and slowly commenced to pack up. We packed our car in under our tent awning and took off the wheel to discover that we had done a wheel bearing. The weather was too wet to attempt Hells Gate, so the plan was changed to make our way slowly back to the Great Alpine Road and see if we could either get the car fix in Omeo or arrange RACV to come to our rescue. Peter and Fran decided that, as they had a very wet tent inside including some wet bedding due to trying to pack up in the rain, they would leave us later in the day. We made our way down from Nunnong Plain on what under normal circumstances would have been a great track. We were very conscious of the problems with our car to enjoy it too much. Somewhere along this track Peter D came down on a rock that pushed the exhaust up so that it was rubbing on the body of the car.
14 | P a g e
We came out of the bush and now needed to descend down a steep grassy track though farm land. The recent rain had made this very slippery indeed. We slowly made our way down to the bitumen road and stopped to re-assess the situation
with our car. It was decided that if the mechanic in Omeo had the right tools and we could access a part then Dave, Rick and Steve were prepared to have a go at fixing the problem. A few phone calls later with the part available in Bairnsdale and Jessica about half an hour away from there, getting the part was solved. Steve and Rick went ahead of us into Omeo to see if they could source a mechanic with the right tools. The rest of us followed slowly into Omeo. A phone call from Steve confirmed that the RACV mechanic could help us out but he was out on a job. Jessica was asked to pick up the ordered part. On arriving in Omeo most of us visited the bakery for hot pies for lunch. Then it was up to the local recreation ground where there was cement slab under cover that we could use as a makeshift repair shop. While we waited for the mechanic to return and Jessica to arrive with the part, work began on Peter D’s car to fix the exhaust pipe. Josh, Anthony and Justin filled in time playing with Josh’s Christmas present, a remote control car. Justin then noticed the large quantity of large Christmas beetles in the area. He began to collect them, both live and dead ones and set them out on the path next to the building. Several hours later both cars were repaired. Peter and I decided that we would continue on the trip out to Buckwong Creek Hut for the night and then decide what we would do the next day depending on the weather. We said farewell to Peter and

Fran who were going to head down to Bairnsdale to find a motel for the night and then take the scenic coastal route back to Melbourne. We arrived at Buckwong Hut to find no one camped there. The reason for this may have been that most of the campsite was water logged. We managed to find a spot up near the road next to the creek that was not too bad. By this stage it was fairly late so we set up, had dinner and sat around the campfire. Friday 30th December 2016 No one was up very early and it was a very overcast day. The plan was to take a trip to Davies Plain Hut for those that wanted to. Peter decided that he didn’t want to take our car and was happy to have a quiet day sitting around at camp reading his book. So I got in with Jessica for the day. Most of the day was spent in the low cloud but we had very little rain. While we could not get the spectacular views, the trees had a beauty of their own in the clouds. One very muddy hole stopped Rick for a while as we did a bit of track maintenance. Up at Davies hut we had lunch, lined up the cars for a photo and watched a pair of Gang Gang cockatoos making their way in under the roof of the hut and out again. Not far from Charlie Creek Hut on our return trip a large tree had fallen across the road. This was too large for us to move but Steve who had stopped a bit further back spotted a clear section that we might enable us to negotiate around the trip with a little bit of bush bashing. This we all managed to do without too much difficulty. As we got closer to camp it became wetter and wetter. Peter informed us that it had rained most of the day and he was keeping a watch on the creek as it had risen and was now over the road but still a long way from causing our campsites problems. The 3 boys then had fun playing in the creek, floating sticks down it, etc. The rest of us sat around and relax for the rest of the day. Josh and Anthony decided to dig a toilet over the road for us and then marked the trail with sticks so we could find it. The only problem was that the ground was so wet that the hole was filling up with water.
18 | P a g e
The good thing was that it was not hard to dig your own hole. The water level in the creek continued to rise and we placed out marker sticks to keep an eye on it. Before going to bed those of us near the creek made sure that most of our stuff was packed away in case we needed to move during the night. But the creek had started to go down so we were not too worried. Saturday 31st December 2016 Peter and I decided that we would pack up and make our way home. Although the wheel bearing had been fixed we still had a problem with the brakes and no handbrake. Jessica decided that she would come into Benambra with us and get the fuel and maybe some extra supplies. By mid-morning we were ready to leave and with everyone’s rubbish on board we said our good byes and left. In Benambra we got fuel and ice- creams. Jessica couldn’t get what she wanted and came into Omeo with us. We got rid of the rubbish in Omeo, said good bye to Jessica, and began our slow but uneventful trip home. Jessica surprised everyone by arriving back at the campsite with ice-creams for everyone. She had bought a new fridge/freezer in Sunbury and decided that she wanted to try it out. Josh again got out his remote control car. It was decided that they would attached Steve’s GoPro to it. This was fun until Josh drove the car into the creek. The GoPro survived but I am not too sure about the car. Dave and Rick packed up late that afternoon and headed home. Jessica and Steve stayed for the night and then headed out early the next morning. Although the trip was one of the lowest number wise for a few years we still had a great trip. Again the reason you belong to a club came to the fore. Without the support of this wonderful club in getting our car mobile we would have not been able to make it. Thank you to Steve, Rick and Dave for your knowledge and ability and determination that enabled our car to be fixed and allow us to stay on the trip. The weather added a set of challenges that altered some plans but didn’t defeat us. Overall it was a great trip with great people and great memories. We may not have been able to say that we conquered Hells Gate but there is always next time when the weather is better. Therefore, need someone to look after the membership function for that period. (Secretary will do so.) Editor No report was submitted by Dan. Martin will be away on leave from July to September. Therefore, need someone to print and distribute the magazine. In discussion. Query was raised as to the longer-term future of printing the club’s magazine; considering that Martin’s printer is getting a bit old and spare parts are becoming harder to come by. Sub-Committees 7.1. Communications Martin’s report regarding the update of the club’s website was tabled. Concern was expressed about the amount of detail in the club’s calendar that is visible to the public – would it lead to members of the public attending club trips unannounced or have too many attend? A number of other 4WD club websites were reviewed in terms of calendar content. The Pajero 4WD Club did not have their calendar available to the public (only accessible to members) whilst the Land Rover Owners Club of Victoria only showed date and trip title to the public with more details available to the public. Should the trip standard be recorded on the calendar? 7.2. Community Involvement
