INTRODUCTION TO THE SUBARU 4WD CLUB The Subaru 4WD Club of Victoria Inc. was originally formed over 30 years ago by an enthusiastic group of Subaru owners. Today the club has expanded to include all Subaru 4WD and AWD vehicles, as well as all other makes of AWD, light 4WD and crossover/soft-roader type vehicles. The club aims to participate in exploration of the Australian countryside without damage to the environment, vehicle or individual. Visitors are most welcome to attend the club’s General Meetings and contact committee members regarding participation in club activities. The club relies on membership fees to offset its running costs, including insurance. Membership fees are payable each year, due on 31 May. Fees for the 2015/16 year were agreed at the general meeting in April 2015 and are as follows: ● Single: $120 (Seniors card - $110) ● Joint/family: $140 - (Seniors card - $125). Joining Fee $10 ($20 for Joint/Family) (All annual fees include FWDV affiliation and trip insurance: $47) A trip fee of $15 per adult non-member applies (for insurance purposes) Please contact the membership officer for further information regarding membership, including pro-rata and monthly rates.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT Welcome to the May Subaru 4WD Club magazine. It feels like it was yesterday that I was writing my April President’s report. The month has flown! Thank you to Jessica for her very professional presentation on Trip Leading at last month’s General Meeting. I hope you were able to take away a lot about the intricacies (and rewards) that come with leading a trip for our club. It would be fantastic to see a few new trip leaders. Personally, despite having run many trips for the club myself in the past 3 years, I was able to still take away a few key learnings from Jessica’s presentation. Thanks again, Jess. We’ve been continuing our work behind the scenes here at the club to ensure that our stand at the Explore Australia Expo will look magnificent. Bringing with it an opportunity to secure new members and showcase the great activities our club does, the Explore Australia Expo will also provide an opportunity to meet other like-minded clubs within the ‘Opposite Lock Club Corner’. There will be 8 other clubs we can talk with while manning our stand about trip suggestions, camping tips and ideas – so feel free to have some questions ready about where you might like to head. We can also share our knowledge of various places. Though, we may become slightly forgetful when it comes to the detail of some of our special ‘secret’ campsites! Thank you to everyone who has volunteered time to assist in running our stand. It’s greatly appreciated. Just prior to last month’s General Meeting, Jessica, Jamie, Peter & Edith and I went down to Damian & Angela’s farm to scope out and work on the creation of a 4WD Training Ground for the club. We were very successful in creating some good challenges that will provide education and awareness about the capabilities of vehicles. The aim is to ensure the club has the opportunity to train new members in the use of their vehicle. We have a qualified 4WD Trainer in Jessica, so we’re on the right track to being able to provide a comprehensive suite of training – both theory and practical components. This puts us in a great position – not only for us all as club members – but also when it comes to promoting our club to new, prospective members. Watch this space for more information on the completion of this course and then subsequent training weekend later this year. Page: 4
PRESIDENT’S REPORT Given the significant time and effort we’ve been dedicating to getting ready for the Explore Australia Expo, we’ve delayed the launch of the educational and training information we will be placing in the magazine each month. I mentioned in my report last month that, as new members join our club, we need to arm them with as much educational knowledge and training as possible. From my perspective, this is something our club could do better. So, as a result, look out in the magazine in the coming months, where we will be adding regular educational information such as Convoy Procedures, Trip and Track Gradings/Classifications and the Four Wheel Driver’s Code of Ethics. It’s always good to remind ourselves of this information every now and then so that we can run safe and professional (but very fun!) trips. The colder months are here, but that doesn’t mean we can’t go out on trips! Personally, I’ll go on any trip – no matter how cold, wet and muddy it’s going to be. But I very much understand that long cold, wet camping weekends away in winter aren’t always to everyone’s liking. As a result, day trips are a great alternative. Rick’s Day Trip to Keppell’s Hut and Rubicon is a prime example of how we can have a fantastic day out with ease in winter. And, we’re so lucky in Melbourne with many day trip opportunities available just a short distance from the suburbs. At this month’s General Meeting, we will have a special guest. Suzette Fullerton from the Department of Environment Land, Water and Planning (Latrobe Valley region) will be talking with us about the development of 4WD touring routes, restoration of huts, fire recovery works, seasonal road closures and working with volunteers. TRIP & SOCIAL REPORT Thank you to Jessica for running a great segment on being a Trip Leader at our last Club Meeting. So we have no excuse for not getting out there and running a day trip or an event of some type. Just because it is getting colder and some tracks are closing there are still lots areas to explore and things to do. We would like to have a few mid week trips and events to cater for those Club members who are shift workers, work weekends, work part time or are retired. So if this is you and you would like to arrange a mid week trip please consider doing so. You might just want to do a day trip or even a social event such as a Lunch and Movie. Explore Australia Expo Friday 29th to Sunday 31st May Standard :- ☺ This event is being Held at the Melbourne Show Grounds. The Club will have a PR stand set up. Stephen is arranging a roster of people who can help out on the stand. The show is open to the public Friday 10.00 an – 6.00pm, Saturday 9.00am – 6.00pm and Sunday 9.00am -5.00pm. To visit Mt Tessie & Cairn at 756mt, Tarr-Buda Suspension bridge, maybe the Balook Tea House & Tarra Valley Picnic Area. Sunday Night: l hope to have a Pub Meal if l can book somewhere. Let me know if you’re coming so l can make bookings. Monday: pack up head home any time There is sure to be mud and water featuring in some of the trips. Camping will be available. Come for a day or the whole weekend. Midweek Mungo Meander Date: Tuesday 28 - Friday 31 July Standard: Easy ● if the weather is dry Trip Leader: Jessica Walsh e: jw@subaru4wdvic.com.au Fees: Day entry per car $7, Camping per adult/child $5/$3 per night. Vehicle limit: 10 cars I am off to Mungo for a few days at the end of July. Mungo National Park is located in NSW in the Willandra Lakes World Heritage Area. This is a midweek trip to allow for those who work weekends to come along. Some information on the park is here: www.visitmungo.com.au We will be staying in a Mildura caravan park on Tuesday night, to allow people to arrive at their own leisure. Mildura is 5-6 hours north of Melbourne. Wednesday will see us heading to Mungo, which is a further two hours north. There is an excellent camping area with toilets and shaded campsites (see fees, above). They have a great interpretive center to spend the afternoon learning about some of Australia’s oldest inhabitants. From here there is a 70km loop track that passes much the park has to offer, which I plan to do on Thursday. A leisurely pack-up and then head home on Friday. A walk to watch the sunset on the Walls of China is also not to be missed, which we will do either or both nights depending on the weather. This is an isolated area, so please make sure you are self sufficient with water and food. Extra fuel won’t be necessary if you fill up in Mildura. Pack some warm clothes, as this is desert country and it can get very cold at night. (If the nights are clear, it is a star-gazers paradise).

Trip Leader : - Jamie Scott. js@subaru4wdvic.com.au Trip Standard :- Easy ● to Medium ■ This trip will be a continuation from the Mungo Trip. To camp at Kinchega/Menindee lake for four/five days. There is a cost to camp and need to book at some (but there are Hot Showers) From there back down beside the Darling River ( back road ) Maybe to Hattah Lakes for two nights with day trips. Cost to camp $ ??? Green Lake ( near Sealake ) for two days at a cost ( cheap & power site & hot showers ) Let me know if you thinking off coming so l can book camp sites. Christmas in July Date: Saturday 18th July 2015 Standard: Social ☺ Location: At the Home of Peter and Jean Bellis in Boronia Trip Leader: Jean Bellis e: events@subaru4wdvic.com.au Cost: $25 per person. Meal will included roast meats and vegetable, plum pudding and another special desert. BYO Drinks Snow Trip With the early cold snap and some snow already around it is time to think about the Club Snow Trip. As this trip will often happen on short notice (ie “there have been big falls of snow this week, lets go this weekend”) we require people to put their names on the Trip Intention sheet if they would like to attend. The Trip Leader/ Leaders will then contact you to let you know date etc. On short notice we understand that some people will not be able to attend. But you will only be advised of the trip if you name is on the list.

TRIP REPORTS THE 2015 EASTER TRIP (KNOCKWOOD, BIG RIVER, ENOCH POINT & WOODS POINT) Friday 3 April – Monday 6 April By Stephen Whittaker (trip leader) Friday: The 2015 Easter long weekend arrived and another Subaru 4WD Club adventure was planned! This time, we were headed for Knockwood, south of Mansfield and Jamieson. We would base ourselves at Knockwood Camp Ground and day trip out across the weekend. With Easter being one of the busiest times for camping across Victoria, we knew it was likely to be a challenge securing a campsite. But, thanks to early arrivals (on the Wednesday and Thursday), we were able to secure a spot. The unfortunate aspect of it, though, was that it was with every other man, woman, dog, motorbike and stereo system in Victoria! Not quite, but near enough. It was certainly busy, but we relaxed into the evening, ate dinner and chatted around the campfire before retiring to bed listening to three different types of music being played very loudly until the early hours of the morning. Saturday: We were up early and we didn’t hesitate to make sure everyone else knew about it. Our fellow campers, having stayed up very late making all sorts of racket, were still in bed. Our turn now. It was planned to be a big day, so we headed off by 9am. We climbed Moonlight Spur Track first heading to wards Enoch Point. Moonlight Spur Track is rocky but not too challenging, though, there is the occasional steep p i n c h . O n e particularly steep pinch caught out Paul Page: 12
TRIP REPORTS and he ran out of grunt three quarters of the way up. After having several attempts at getting going again, after backing down a little, we decided to get out the snatch straps and tow him up. Luckily, Charles & Paula were in front of Paul. Having not performed a recovery before, Charles was keen to have a go and with twin lockers on the Prado, we figured all would go very well. Indeed it did. Paul was towed up the rest of the way with ease. Well done, Charles! On we went with a few more tricky rocky sections. Comments flew over the radio. Just after we hit Mt Terrible Track and turned right, we had morning tea. Onward again, we descended all the way back down to the river and Enoch Point. Enoch Point is basically a village of small huts and homes in this fairly remote area. The huts are pretty basic but are located in a pretty spot. We parked and enjoyed a short walk took us to Enoch Falls; a very pretty set of waterfalls. Lunch followed the walk and then we were on the tracks again. We climbed up Danes Track to the summit of Mt Terrible. Danes Track provided another good rocky climb in spots. At the summit of Mt Terrible, folks took photos and enjoyed the spectacular views. There was just one other group of vehicles on the top while we were there. Departing the summit of Mt Terrible, we descended again Page: 13

TRIP REPORTS back down to the main road just north of Kevington. Here, folks were provided with options. Continue on for some more interesting four wheel driving or head back to camp. A few vehicles headed back to camp with the majority staying for another drive. We headed north into Jamieson for fuel, toilets and, of course, ice-creams!! Back on the road again and we headed further north for Stony Creek Track. This track departs the Mansfield-Jamieson Road and goes straight up with a sharp left turn where it again continues to go up! Once it flattens out again, the track is very enjoyable with a few steep pinches here and there and spectacular views back down over Jamieson seen through the trees. We turned right to head down into Granny’s Flat. The descent is enjoyable and would be a good challenge to climb back up. Another day. Once at Granny’s Flat, a pleasant crossing of the Jamieson River was enjoyed. A quick toilet stop and then we raced back to camp in time for another 30 minutes of daylight. A big day but a good day. Following dinner, a relaxing evening around the fire was enjoyed by all… along with three different types of music being played very loudly until the early hours of the morning… again! Sunday: Sunday morning saw a few folks slowly packing up to head home. The music had become too much and the prospect of another night with little sleep was

TRIP REPORTS going to be too much to bear. It was a slow morning with the main drive not departing until 11am. Woods Point would be our destination. A short, easy 2WD day was planned. The mining history in this area is incredible and you could easily spend several weeks exploring all the old mining sites between Kevington and Woods Point. Luckily, we will visit this place again soon. We tootled through the old mining communities and arrived in Woods Point. It was decided a pub meal was on the cards. So, into the Woods Point Pub we went. Fish and chips, parmas and roasts were served and enjoyed. Then, we walked the township reading about the stunning history. We even went into the museum for a gold coin donation. We read a lot about the huge community that Woods Point (and surrounds) used to be. Did you know that Woods Point (at one point) had over 60 pubs?! Well it did. You wouldn’t know it now. On the road again, we headed back to camp but not before a quick firewood collection. We ended up with a nice stash which meant we enjoyed a great evening around the fire. Thankfully, this evening was quieter and the music down to a dull roar
compared to the previous two. With a full moon out, it was a beautiful but cold night. Monday: Pack-up-and-head-home-day arrived. In our own time, we all headed home, some earlier than others. Thanks to everyone for making the Easter long weekend a very special one in a magnificent area! We must explore through Page: 18

STANDARD TRIP EQUIPMENT & RECOVERY GEAR The aim of all Subaru 4WD Club of Victoria Inc. trips is to have an enjoyable experience in the bush, increasing 4WDing skills and experience, whilst maintaining the highest regard for the safety of individuals, the vehicle and the environment. As a driver you have ultimate responsibility for the safety of your passengers and vehicle. It is the responsibility of any participating driver to contact individual trip leaders for clarification of individual trip requirements and standards. Financial members are encouraged to participate in as many trips as possible to increase confidence and experience. Visitors are welcome subject to the payment of the appropriate levy to cover insurance, but after two visits, should consider membership. Non-financial members are not covered by insurance and may not participate until payment is received. Individual drivers with concerns or queries regarding their vehicle and the trip standard should contact relevant trip leaders. The Subaru 4WD Club of Victoria Inc. recommends that each vehicle carry the following items of equipment on every trip: a) Personal details form as specified by FWDV, copy to Trip Leader b) Two Rated D- Shackles (minimum 3.2t); c) Rated “Snatch’em” Strap; d) Recovery Points, Front & Rear; plus optional bridle strap, according to vehicle design; e) AM (27Mhz) Channel 5 or UHF (477Mhz) Channel 16 CB Radio; f) Fire Extinguisher, accessible to the driver; g) Spare Tyre (full size); h) Jack and Wheel Brace, or equivalent; i) Emergency Supplies (matches, food, water and clothing); j) Sufficient Fuel, Oil and Water for the trip and delays; k) A Tyre Pressure Gauge; Compressor (according to the trip) l) An Axe, Bow or Chain saw; m) A Sturdy Shovel (collapsible shovels are no good); n) Spare Parts (appropriate to the nature of the Trip); o) A Tool Kit; p) Personal First Aid Kit; q) The Vehicle Manual. Any vehicle not carrying at least the first five (5) items of equipment should contact the individual Trip Leader before leaving. Any Club member unsure about any of the items of equipment listed above are advised to contact the Trip and Social Coordinator or the Trip Leader concerned. All Trip Leaders carry a complete First Aid Kit in case of emergency. All nonemergency medical needs are expected to be meet by individuals own medical supplies.

CLUB MEETING MINUTES The general meeting of the Subaru 4WD Club of Victoria Inc was held on Tuesday, 28th April 2015 at the South Camberwell Tennis Club starting at 8:05pm. 1. Minutes of the Previous General Meeting ● The minutes of the March 2015 General Meeting were accepted with the amendment to the fines under the Traralgon weekend attributed to Michael H being amended to Michael D. Moved by Bob Marshall and seconded by Jessica Walsh. ● There was no business arising from the minutes. 6. Seeking suggestions as to how to celebrate. Also seeking members who are willing to assist in organising it. ● Venue ● See elsewhere in the magazine for details about future trips and social events. ● Membership. ● Nothing to report. ● Treasurer ● Current bank account is $4,245.15. ● Still waiting on the chocolate fundraising monies. ● Secretary ● Nothing to report. ● Vice-President ● Have four boxes of fundraising chocolate left to sell. ● Driving course construction work – many thanks to those who came to help with the work. The course will be a “dry weather” course. ● President ● Nothing to report. 8. Membership Fees ● The committee discussed membership fees for 2015/6 were discussed at the last committee meeting. It was agreed that there was currently no foreseeable investment requirements that demands the need to increase the membership fees. It was moved by Jessica Walsh and seconded by Bob Marshall that the membership fees for 2015/16 remain as they currently are. RESOLUTION
The meeting resolved that the membership fees for 2015/16 remain at the current rates.
9. Explore Australia Expo ● It expected that there will be quite a few people at the show who will Page: 23
CLUB MEETING MINUTES have light SUV’s and so, fall in the club’s target audience. ● The club has a 6m x 6m stand, of which 3m x 3m will be under cover. Therefore, have the opportunity to have a vehicle on the stand over the weekend. What vehicle do we put on the stand? What then would be the club’s theme? 10. General Business ● Question was asked whether the club should put some of the spare cash in the operating account into the fixed term account? It was pointed out that there is very little benefit to do so with the current very low rates of interest. Furthermore, it would restrict the club’s flexibility in meeting any unexpected expenditure. ● Paul’s wife’s car – currently having an oil consumption test. Latest result is that 2 litres of oil is being consumed for 4,000km (not very good). ● Jamie – has a set of IPF driving lamps, plus wiring loom, for sale for $100. ● 4WD Victoria – is running a raffle as part of its 40th anniversary celebrations. ● Based on a recent experience out bush with very noisy campers, should the club have a banner that is co-sponsored by Parks Victoria or DELWP? This might help other campers to modify their behaviour. ● Damian had the recent experience of breaking two wheel studs on his Subaru, and stretching a third one. Wheel nuts should be tightened to no more than 70 foot pound. 11. COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES Minutes of the meeting of the committee of the Subaru 4WD Club of Victoria Inc held on 5th May 2015 at the home of Damian Stock starting at 7:35pm. 1. Present Damian Stock, Jamie Scott, Dale Rebgetz, Jean Bellis, Peter Bellis, Bob Marshall, Stephen Whittaker, Martin Foot 2. Apologies Jessica Walsh, Michael Hartshorne. 3. Quorum A quorum was achieved with 8 committee members present. 4. Minutes of the Previous Meeting 4.1 Minutes of the April 2015 committee meeting were accepted without amendment. 4.2 Business Arising from the Minutes and Outstanding Actions 4.2.1 Bank account signatories. 4.2.2 AGM report for 2014 – need to update the vice-president’s report and email to members in PDF format. 4.2.3 Club’s cupboard. 4.2.4 Club’s website needs to be updated in terms of content. It is currently a “work in progress”. 4.2.5 Club listing in the “Just 4x4” magazine. 4.2.6 Ongoing 4WD Education / Awareness. 4.2.7 Membership renewal form. 5. Correspondence 5.1 In ● Shaun Lawlor, Victorian Regional Manager, Subaru Australia – wanting to find out more about the club. ● Magazine from the Mt Gambier 4WD Club Discussion was had as to how magazine received electronically from other 4WD clubs should be circulated to members. It was agreed that any such magazine would be dropped into DropBox and members informed via email. 5.2 Out ● None. 6. Reports 6.1 Resources Page: 25

Last orders will be accepted by the 15th June. 6.2 Trip and Social ● As circulated. ● Photography day – waiting for a date from Jan Rebgetz. ● Proposed trip for 2019 – 40th anniversary trip on the Madigan line, following where club members went in 1979. This would result in deferring the Cape York trip. ● Still looking for trips for June/July/August/September. Day trips are a viable alternative to full weekend trips. ● 40th Birthday celebrations – forming a sub-committee to organise it. Stephen has volunteered to go on it. Will seek some other members to be involved. 6.3 Venue ● Still need to firm up potential guest speakers. 6.4 Membership ● As per circulated. ● Had one membership enquiry. ● Membership milestone certificates for Mark Tyssen will be forwarded in the next week. ● Member related “stuff” in the magazine – certainly need to reintroduce the member profile into the club’s magazine (a few times a year). Other member related information would be accessed/ submitted via the member portal on the club’s website. Need to determine list of extra information as will only have one chance to get the back-end of the website updated. 6.5 Editor ● No report submitted. 6.6 Treasurer ● Current bank account balance is $4,245.15. ● Have received the chocolate fundraising fund, which will appear in this month’s accounts. Still have money outstanding for the remaining four boxes. ● Stephen will be submitting a expense claim for the Explore Australia Expo fee ($410 - $300 of which is a refundable deposit). 6.7 Secretary ● Will be absent for the May general meeting and June committee meeting. Therefore, will require someone else to take the meeting minutes, and look after the general meeting slide show / data projector. Damian has volunteered to take the minutes, do the Page: 26

Sub-Committees 7.1 Communication ● The update of the club’s website is in progress. Concentrating on updating the member section. 7.2 Community Involvement ● Nothing to report. 7.3 Constitution Review ● Nothing to report. 8. Explore Australia Expo ● Stephen has reviewed the exhibitors’ manual. Get only four free tickets. Other tickets for members will be discounted to $10 (from $17). Is there exhibitors passes that cover the 4 days. How are the discounted tickets accessed? Members on the stand need to wear club shirts/jackets and name tags. Fire extinguisher – Peter/Jean to supply to Damian to pass onto Stephen. Chairs – Damian to supply three foldup chairs. Setup – Thursday evening. Should be able to take the vehicle on the Friday morning (need to clarify). Pack up / move out – Sunday evening. The awning will need 20kg weights for each leg – Stephen to get salt bags from Bunnings. ● Stephen is prepared to take his television each day. ● The Brumby will be the only vehicle on the stand. Will bring vehicle stands to back the Brumby up on. ● Will have photographic boards, banner, brochures and TV. Should we have a few extra banners highlighting other aspects of the club? Damian has a few spare banner frames. Stephen will put together a design and circulate to committee members for comment prior to printing. 9. General Business ● Portable shelter – should the club invest in one? (to be discussed at July committee meeting) ● Vehicles with constant velocity transmissions (CVT) – need to be careful with vehicles with CVTs out bush. Mains issue are external damage Page: 27
FOUR WHEEL DRIVE VICTORIA CLEAN UP THE BUSH PROJECT To all you wonderful people, What a fantastic weekend we just had! You have helped us absolutely exceed our own expectations in regards to what we were trying to achieve with the Clean Up the Bush Project and we at Four Wheel Drive Victoria cannot thank you enough. A week prior to the event our volunteer numbers were looking just ok. How marvellous it was to finally see the figures rise to 53 on Saturday and 35 on Sunday to bring about an amazing realization of a project which had been in the making for 12 months or so. Together with members from Friends of Rokeby and Friends of Tyers Park groups, in coordination with Parks Victoria, we utilised multiple vehicles and trailers from 13 different FWDV clubs to gather and place the various dumped items from household rubbish to whitegoods, tyres and a diverse assortment of metal objects, including two cars bodies, into the strategically placed bins pre-arranged for this purpose. What seemed to be an enormous task from the search stage, was made a whole lot easier by the incredible willingness of those chaps and chappettes present, in rolling up their sleeves and getting stuck into the most unpleasant task confronting us. A big thank you to Dave Mapleson for his concept and exceptional contribution from the outset, not forgetting his team of helpers from the Gippsland and Just Mates 4x4 clubs who spent many hours meeting and planning the event. To Andy Gillham from Parks Victoria for his input, also from the outset and then to work alongside us as he did was brilliant. Richard Wadsworth from DELWP for his assistance in making things come together from his office and also getting down and dirty amongst the crew when required. Rob Patrick and Suzette Fullerton DELWP for also committing themselves to the cause, excellent work, thank you very much indeed. A huge thank you to all of you for your participation in what has now set the benchmark for future events in this regard, we certainly have a great platform to work from which will enable us to take this model across the state wherever the need arises. Just a thought, God must drive a 4WD as he certainly looked after us with the weather for the whole weekend.
