ABOUT THE CLUB The Subaru 4WD Club of Victoria Inc. was originally formed over 40 years ago by an enthusiastic group of Subaru owners. Today the club has expanded to include all Subaru 4WD and AWD vehicles, as well as all other makes of AWD, light 4WD and crossover/soft-roader type vehicles. The club aims to participate in the exploration of the Australian countryside without damage to the environment, vehicle or individual. Visitors are most welcome to attend the club’s General Meetings and contact committee members regarding participation in club activities.
The club relies on membership fees to offset its running costs, including insurance. Membership fees are payable each year, due on 31 May. The fees for 2021/22 were set by members at the General Meeting in April 2021 and are as follows: MEMBERS RATES Single: $85 (Senior card - $80) Joint/Family: $95 (Senior card - $90) (Note: these are annual rates. New members joining mid-year pay pro-rata) One off joining fee of $15 ($30 for Joint/Family) also applies All annual fees include FWDV affiliation and trip insurance: $30 These fees are based on an electronic newsletter distribution only. Requests for a hard copy magazine will be considered by the Committee. NON-MEMBER TRIP FEE A trip fee of $15 per adult non-member applies (for insurance purposes). PRESIDENT’S REPORT I mentioned in my report last month that new models have been announced in America by Subaru, more terrain ready vehicles starting with the Outback Wilderness edition, hinted to cascade to Forester and other models. These are yet to be announced for availability in Australia. Well, there have been more announcements over this last month – that of the continuing joint development with Toyota. Toyota own about 20% of Subaru Corporation (note change of name from Fuji Heavy Industries). They are moving into the Electric Vehicle market – Subaru’s version to be called the ‘Solterra’, meaning ‘sun’ & ‘earth’, which fits in with the Subaru logo of stars – source of energy. Martin has included in this issue some of the advance promotional material, no announcement of availability for Australia. With the advancement of suppliers providing electric vehicles, it is hoped that there is going to be the required infrastructure to make electric vehicles a viable mode of transport outside of the more conventional urban/city environment, not just in spread of charging stations, but also in time taken to recharge. It will be interesting what the capability will be for electric vehicles, what precautions vehicle users will need to understand about their vehicles, the types of limits that the vehicles can be subjected too. And if different recovery requirements are needed, because of location of electric components, packs of batteries, sensors etc. A Chinese competitor to Tesla, Nio, uses the arrangement of complete battery pack changeover as a method to deal with recharging batteries. Nio exchanges a slide in-out compartment below the seating area of the vehicle. It take three minutes, faster than filling a conventional vehicle with 50 litres of diesel or petrol. But again scale of electric vehicle product in the market place makes a difference. September 2021 will mark the 45th Anniversary since the Club’s Foundation. A celebratory event is being planned. The Committee have initiated a subcommittee to mange the organisation for the event, and we call on our members new, longer membership (like myself in April 1993), and close to Foundation members on 1976, to assist us in being part of this organising subcommittee. VICE-PRESIDENT’S REPORT I recently did a short 4WD maintenance course at Ringwood Training. Small group of four most nights, so we got to spend a lot of practical time with the vehicles. For example removing a tyre off the rim, patching it and back on the rim then inflating it. With the right tools, everyone in the group could do it. Most of the vehicles were various models of Toyota Landcruisers and the complexity (and engine bay crowding) was clear to see over the last 40 years. The instructor runs training courses as Safetrek Training from the Black Spur Inn so may be worth looking at for anyone looking for 4WD driver training. His modified Ford Ranger weighed in at over 3.5 tonnes with tools, kitchen, fridge and freezer, hot water, full electrics, set up for leading off road trips on tracks like the Canning Stock Route. Apart from additional gauges, he also had a tyre pressure monitoring system. Mandatory in the U.S. for over 10 years, but still rare here. Anyone got one standard or aftermarket monitor fitted? 45TH BIRTHDAY Open for Ideas! Later this year in September, the club will celebrate its 45th Birthday. The tradition has been to hold a social event open to past and present and any prospective members and their families. It usually takes the form of an enjoyable event, followed by a catered sit-down dinner. The “half-decade” celebration is usually not as large as the “full decade”. For example, in 2016 for the 40th celebration we camped near Echuca and enjoyed a paddle boat trip on the Murray. For the 35th, Angela and Damian Stock opened their farm gates, laid a dance floor in the tractor shed and hosted a spit roast BBQ. The Committee are considering an event near Melbourne, possibly in the Dandenongs, coupled with a social trip beforehand through the hills. Other locations being considered include Toolangi and Warburton. The thinking is that people would be able to return home afterwards comfortably and accommodation wouldn’t be required, except by individual choice. The event is likely to be held in early to mid October, after the school holidays.. 2023 Subaru Solterra [Articles reproduced from caranddriver.com] BY ERIC STAFFORD Overview The upcoming 2023 Subaru Solterra is an electric compact crossover, and the Japanese automaker's first EV. Fittingly, it will feature standard all-wheel drive, a Subaru staple. Subaru teamed up with Toyota to co -develop the platform for this EV SUV, which is also planned to underpin other future models. The Solterra will be visually and mechanically similar to the forthcoming Toyota bZ4X, but it'll have a more phonetically pleasing name and probably some subtle Subaru styling motifs. While the bZ4X and the 2023 Solterra currently don't face much competition in the non-luxury, compactute segment, the landscape could drastically change by the time they hit showrooms next year. The Solterra crossover will be Subaru's first electric vehicle when it goes on sale in 2022 as a 2023 model. Subaru hasn't announced pricing for the 2023 Solterra, but we expect it to closely align with the Toyota bZ4X, which we think will start in the high $US30,000s. Once we know how much the Subie will cost and learn more about its different trim levels and available features we can provide a recommendation on which one to buy.
Toyota and Subaru Will Build Two Electric SUVs on a Jointly Developed EV Platform The new platform will be able to underpin both mid-size and large vehicles, including sedans and crossovers. BY DANIEL GOLSON 10

Toyota and Subaru are co-developing a new electric-car platform for mid-size and large sedans and SUVs. This partnership will also result in a new electric crossover being jointly developed by the two companies. The new SUVs will be sold under both brands and will be in the compact segment. In an expansion of their partnership to share hybrid technology, which generated Subaru's first plug-in hybrid, Toyota and Subaru have announced that they are jointly developing a new electric-car platform for use by both brands. The new platform will be for "mid-size and large passenger vehicles," they said, and it can underpin both sedans and SUVs. No other technical details were given, but the automakers released the image above, showing a rendering of the platform. In addition to the new platform, the companies will be jointly developing an electric SUV based on the architecture that will be sold under both brands. Again, not a lot of details were given, but the new crossovers will be in the C segment where the Subaru Forester and the Toyota RAV4 exist. Rumors in the Japan Times and elsewhere recently suggested that the new electric SUVs will hit the market in 2021. Neither brand currently offers any electric cars in the United States, although both have announced extensive electrification plans in the past few years. (Toyota has admitted that it's taking a careful approach when it comes to electric cars.) The joint statement says that Toyota's electrification tech and Subaru's all-wheel-drive expertise will be put to use on the new projects. Toyota and Subaru first entered into a business partnership in 2005 after General Motors got rid of its stake in Subaru parent Fuji Heavy Industries; Toyota is now the largest shareholder of Subaru. In addition to the Crosstrek plug-in, the collaboration most notably resulted in the creation of the Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ sports-car twins, which are on track to receive a second generation at some point in the future.

A reconnaissance was done on 1 May, photos and videos have been posted. May be tricky if wet. Currently 11 vehicles registered. May need to be done in two convoys. North Flinders Ranges Trip: 18 – 31 July 2021. TLs Martin and Dot. Current numbers are 10 vehicles and 13 attendees confirmed. A reconnaissance as far as Yunta is proposed for the Queen’s Birthday weekend. An initial meeting of participants has been called on 16/ 5. Snow Trip. Dates dependant on suitable weather conditions. Currently 12 vehicles and 17 people registered. 45th Birthday Celebrations: to be held on a weekend in late September or early October. The plan is for a Saturday evening dinner at a venue not too far from Melbourne, with an overnight accommodation option. Also, a day trip on the Saturday for those who are interested would finish at the dinner location. The Dandenongs, Warburton, Toolangi and Strathfieldsaye have been suggested as possible locations. Sub-committee of Mark, Tim and Martin to meet to come up with a definite proposal. Cup Day long weekend: Based on the Border track trip, a trip specifically to the Little Desert and Mt. Arapiles was suggested; alternatively, Mt Terrible, or Dinner Plain if not in peak season. Possible trips:
Dinner Plain. Samantha and Daniel had raised with Tim the possibility of an out-of -season club event at the alpine club they are part of at Dinner Plain, as fees would be discounted. In discussion, it was suggested that this could perhaps 13
happen over the Cup day long w/e in November. ACTION: Tim to liaise further with Sam and Daniel.

7.3. Venue: 7.3.1. April General Meeting: This was held on the 27th at SCTC. Fifteen members and 2 visitors attended in person and 12 attended online. Fees were set for 2021/22. With the assistance of Daniel Ho and Angela Bombardieri, video-conferencing was provided via Zoom. Feedback suggests that the position of speakers and cameras could be improved. ACTION: Mark to coordinate. 7.3.2. May General Meeting: Will be held on Tuesday, 25th at 8pm. The venue is SCTC. A discussion on 4WDing using CVT transmission and X-Mode was proposed. ACTION: Nick to lead. 7.4. Membership: 7.4.1. Membership applications: While two applications for membership had been received (Dragic and Midgeley), neither has as yet attended a club meeting, so their applications were deferred. ACTION: Erica. 7.4.2. Membership enquiries: Several enquiries had been received regarding membership. Erica has responded to these. A discussion followed about accepting soft-roader vehicles other than Subarus into the club that may not suitable for many of the trips we undertake. If we accept factory-spec vehicles across the board, such as those with AWD-on-demand rather than full-time, does it follow that we need to provide more Social/Easy trips to accommodate them? Need to clarify our brand. 7.4.3. Membership mailbox. Erica is experiencing problems with the members@subaru4wdvic.com.au mailbox as some emails are not appearing on her phone, and are showing as deleted on the webmail. It may be a matter of changing settings. ACTION: Martin and Erica to investigate. 7.5. Communications and Marketing: 7.5.1. Magazine: Thanks to Tim and Erica for their articles. Martin said he was happy to continue as Editor for the time being. The deadline for the May magazine is the 14th. Nick commented that he has been looking at collaborative tools for production of the magazine, to take the load off the Editor, which role he feels should be primarily about sourcing and sorting materials. He has been looking at two tools in particular. Both would involve an on-going cost to the club. Deb Leask has a professional DTP background and would be prepared to operate the chosen tool to produce the magazine. Thanks to Deb for this offer. ACTION: Nick to prepare a recommendation and costing. 7.5.2. Social Media: No updates to FB at present. Mark and Erica have volunteered to assist. ACTION: Angela to appoint Mark and Erica as administrators. Peter advised that he had set up a new Instagram account for the club and that while the old one remains inaccessible to us, it is possible to identify the current account as the “authorised” one. With regards to the proposed Community Manager role for social media, Nick explained that this role would provide oversight and direction to those people actually posting material, some of whom may have specific roles, eg a moderator. It is undecided as yet as to whether anyone could post freely on the board, or subject to approval. Peter K offered to take on the Community manager role, once we have a clear definition of duties. Motion: That a policy for social media management be prepared. Moved Martin, seconded Angela. CARRIED. ACTION: Nick to prepare, Mark to act a “sounding board”. 14

Tim left the meeting at 9.55pm. 7.6. Treasurer 7.6.1. 2021/22 Fees: Fees were set by the members at the April General Meeting, following the presentation of a budget by Angela and the recommendation by Committee. Notices have been circulated to members and some payments have already been made. Due 31 May. 7.6.2. Bank Balances: $4654.62. Investment account balance remains at $8,269.87. 7.6.3. Vice-President: No report. 7.9. President: No report. 8. Priorities and Planning 8.1. Marketing, Branding and Communications sub-committee: (see also item 7.5 above.) There was general “in-principle” agreement to the Recommendations of the Review, however there were some budget concerns. Nick advised that undertaking a professional branding review would potentially be a large cost on the club and identifying a skilled volunteer to assist with this would be preferable. Total costs of comms, including video-conferencing and magazine production, could be considered at high/medium/low levels, ranging from $11K acquisition/setup and $300 per month for licensing/ down to $1K and $130 per month or less. ACTION: Nick to provide further details. Angela commented that the time taken to setup video-conferencing was taking too long, cutting into the meeting time and a more streamlined (and perhaps more expensive) solution was needed. Who would take this on as a project? While Daniel has provided equipment and advice, but he does not necessarily want to take on the role. Did other clubs have a solution to this? Mark offered to drop into the FWDV office to discuss and to do further research and testing of any proposed solution. It was agreed that a special meeting of Committee is needed dedicated to this topic, once further information is available. 8.2. By-Laws [carried over]: Mark is near to completing his section on Roles and responsibilities, but is waiting for resolution of current discussions re the Editor and Community Manager (see 8.1 above). Martin to continue to draft Code of Conduct section. A section on the operation of the Club Permit Scheme has been proposed. 9. General Business: Nil. 10. MINUTES General Meeting Minutes The general meeting of the Subaru 4WD Club of Victoria Inc was held on Tuesday, 27 April 2021 at South Camberwell Tennis Clubrooms starting at 8:15pm approximately. The meeting was also broadcast from the venue, using Zoom teleconferencing software.

Welcome: Mark welcomed members to the meeting, both those present in person and those connected remotely. 6. Minutes of the Previous Meeting: 6.1. The Minutes of the meeting held on 30 March 2021 had been circulated to members. The Minutes were adopted, subject to the following amendment: That Michael Bauer be added to the list of those attending (in person). Moved Bev Davison, seconded Samantha Lee. CARRIED. 6.2. If there is no stock in hand, individual orders will be placed on a waiting list until a minimum number of 10 is met (otherwise a surcharge applies for the logo). 8.2. Editor: Magazine”: Martin thanked Tim for his three reports in the April magazine, produced in record time: the Trip & Social report, the Vice-President’s Report and a trip report for the Border track trip. The April magazine also included a article by Erica profiling new members Daniel Ho and Samantha Lee. The deadline for the next edition is 14 May. No report on social media. 8.3. Trip & Social Bike Trip scheduled for 1,2 May postponed due to Mark’s injury. Cobaw State Forest Day Trip (23 May). Medium rating. Lancefield to Kyneton. Reconnaissance 1 May. Daniel and Samantha TLs. North Flinders Ranges trip (July 2021) has now fully booked. Names can be placed on a waiting list (contact TLs Martin and Dot). A first draft of the itinerary has been circulated to participants. [carried over] Snow Trip – will be scheduled at short notice. Members should register and will be contacted a few days prior, depending on weather forecasts. 45th Birthday celebrations are due to be held in September. The Committee are looking for volunteers to be part of a sub-Committee to plan the event. 8.4. Venue: Video conferencing in place at the meeting. Thanks to Daniel Ho for assistance. Door Prize: Deb Leask. 8.5. Membership: Erica announced two new Joint/Family memberships – Andre and Rachelle King and Peter and Cathy Aird. Currently the club has 36 memberships. 8.6. Secretary: P.O. Box to be closed. 8.7. Treasurer Fees 2021/22. Angela explained the Committee’s recommendation to keep the fees at the 2019/20 level (ie pre-COVID). The exact amount of the FWDV levy is not yet known but is expected to be approximately $50. She then presented a budget showing projected income and expenditure for the new financial year. Included in the income is advertising of $280 that needs to be found, following the ending of sponsorship by Volksbaru. Business card sized advertising was proposed as was fundraising by means of Bunnings BBQ possibly at Narre Warren. The budget worse case scenario would be a bottom-line deficit of $457. Motion: That the following fee schedule be adopted for 2021/22: 17

President: Mark mentioned that a questionnaire had been received from FWDV and would be addressed by the Committee. 9. General Business: Peter Kakalias’ CVT transmission in his Outback died at Toolangi. Quoted $4,500 to fix ($3,000 cash). CVT belt required replacing. Peter K also mentioned his trip from Sydney via the Snowy River Hydro scheme. Excellent bakery at Jindabyne! 10. Fines and Fun: Badges: ? Last to meeting: David Wilson Trips: In Tim’s absence, the Border Track Trip Fines were held over. A total of $1.20 in fines was taken. 11. TRIP AND RECOVERY GEAR The aim of all Subaru 4WD Club of Victoria Inc. trips is to have an enjoyable experience in the bush, increasing 4WDing skills and experience, whilst maintaining the highest regard for the safety of individuals, the vehicle and the environment. As a driver you have ultimate responsibility for the safety of your passengers and vehicle. It is the responsibility of any participating driver to contact individual trip leaders for clarification of individual trip requirements and standards.
Financial members are encouraged to participate in as many trips as possible to increase confidence and experience. Visitors are welcome subject to the payment of the appropriate levy to cover insurance, but after two visits, should consider membership. Non-financial members are not covered by insurance and may not participate until payment is received.
Individual drivers with concerns or queries regarding their vehicle and the trip standard should contact relevant trip leaders. The Subaru 4WD Club of Victoria Inc. recommends that each vehicle carry the following items or equipment on every trip:

Personal details form as specified by FWDV, copy to Trip Leader Two rated D- Shackles (minimum 3.2t) Rated snatch strap Recovery points, front & rear; plus, optional bridle strap, according to vehicle design; UHF (477Mhz) Channel 16 CB Radio. Ideally in car but hand held are ok provided sufficient battery(s) to last the trip. 1. Fire extinguisher, accessible to the driver 2. Spare tyre (full size) 3. Jack and wheel brace, or equivalent 4. Emergency supplies (matches, food, water and clothing) 5. Sufficient fuel, oil and water for the trip and delays 6. A tyre pressure gauge; compressor (according to the trip) 7. An axe, bow or chain saw; 8. A sturdy shovel (collapsible shovels are no good) 9. Spare parts (appropriate to the nature of the trip) 10. A tool kit 11. Personal first aid kit 12. Your vehicle manual
Any vehicle not carrying at least the first five (5) items of equipment should contact the individual Trip Leader before leaving. Any club member unsure about any of the items of equipment listed above are advised to contact the Trip and Social Coordinator or the Trip Leader concerned. All Trip Leaders carry a complete First Aid Kit in case of emergency. All non-emergency medical needs are expected to be meet by individuals own medical supplies. 20
