PRESIDENT’S REPORT Welcome to the November club magazine and another riveting president’s report, my last for 2012. The Christmas break is fast approaching but there is still plenty happening before then. Jessica and I have the association AGM this week, where I have been nominated for the position of board vice president, By the time you read this my life may have got just that much busier. It should be interesting to see how the election goes with a few well known association members standing against each other in some of the key positions. Personally, I have no idea who I will be up against so I may come up short on the night. More about this at next week’s club meeting. Speaking of club meetings, we were going to have our annual photo competition at next week’s meeting but it looks like we will be postponing it to the New Year. As an alternative, I hear that Stephen has contacted Mark Noble, from Aussie Drink Mate, and he has agreed to come along to the November meeting instead. Make sure that you come along to listen to what Mark has to offer and to make him feel welcome. Of course, before the meeting we have the club’s Christmas party in the Brisbane Ranges, south west of Melbourne. This year’s event is a little different as Stephen has organized a pre-party camping trip on Saturday with a leisurely drive to the party location on Sunday morning. If this is a success we will see if it makes sense to do something similar each year, making a full weekend of our Christmas get together. Another virtual tradition in the club is our involvement in the Oxfam Christmas tree distribution, on the second weekend in December. Peter Bellis leads our involvement in this worthwhile activity and it would be great to see a few more members coming along to help. Angela and I will be there on Saturday to distribute trees in the South and Eastern suburbs. It is great fun seeing the looks on the faces of the happy recipients of these trees with the proceeds going to one of the world’s great welfare organisations. For those of you interested in getting some exercise prior to the Christmas season I am organizing a bike ride for the morning of Sunday December 9th. I know that this conflicts with the second day of the Oxfam event but I figured that there may be a few of you who may like an alternate activity. If you are interested in going for a leisurely ride, maybe followed by a quick latte or juice, let me know at the November meeting. Page: 4
PRESIDENT’S REPORT The Christmas New Year trip this year will be a moving trip, led by David Wilson, starting with a couple of days at Moscow Villa, then heading north via Davies Plain to Tom Groggin for New year’s Eve. If you are interested in coming along please register your interest at the November meeting or directly with David. Don’t forget also to prepare your vehicle for summer conditions by changing lubricants and coolant, checking belts and even getting your air-conditioning serviced. It will make your trip that much more comfortable. I am really looking forward to 2013, not just due to the club trips being planned, but also due to the imminent arrival of the 2013 Forester, expected in February. From what I have seen and read so far, it looks like a great vehicle with its totally revamped styling being similar to the XV. I am especially looking forward to trying out the boxer diesel mated with a constant velocity transmission. Having driven the CVT version of the XV and, as an advocate of automatic gearboxes in the bush, I am really looking forward to seeing how successfully this combination works. It may be time to replace my XT but I really want to keep it long enough to take on the Simpson Desert trip in May next year. I wonder if I can make room in the driveway for one of each for a few months. In February, for the first time in around eight years, we will not be running the three quarter rest point at the Pajero Challenge. It has been a monumental logistics exercise each year to bring everything together in order for the rest point to run smoothly. This has been ably facilitated by Peter Bellis, partly thanks to his, and Jean’s, connection with the scout movement but primarily due to Peter’s attention to detail. It is very understandable that Peter has decided that enough is enough and that it is time for another club to take over this responsibility. For those of you who still want to be involved in the event you can register on the challenge web site to help at one of the smaller checkpoints. As an alternative to the challenge, Jessica is planning a trip to the apple isle, Tasmania, for around ten days. I would love to see Tasmania again, as I have not been there for holidays since about 1974 but I am afraid that I need to keep some vacation time reserved for the Simpson Desert trip. I am sure that Jessica will have a fun trip planned out with some beautiful country to see while traveling around our southern state. Anyway that’s enough from me for this month and this year. Take care of yourself out there, on the road or in the bush, and if I don’t see you at the coming events please have a safe and enjoyable Christmas and New Year. Page: 5

VENUE REPORT
It’s been a good success in previous years, so we’re looking for the club’s brilliant photographers to submit their best work in a range of categories: Best portrait photo (photo of a person) Best Subaru action shot Best recovery shot Best group photo Funniest photo Best landscape/nature scene Best close-up nature shot (flowers, animals, etc.) All photographs submitted must have been taken in the last two years (2011 & 2012) at a club event. All photos must be entered electronically so please email them to venue@subaru4wdvic.com.au. We request all entries to be in a couple of days prior to the January meeting to ensure we can collate the presentation. So, rifle through your collection of club event photos from the last two years and send them to us. Members in attendance at the meeting will be able to vote for the winner in each category – come along, see a display of the club’s events over the last two years and VOTE for the best photos! TRIP & SOCIAL REPORT CHRISTMAS PARTY (OPTIONAL WEEKEND TRIP) Sunday 25th November (optional trip from 24th November) This year, the Christmas Party will be held in the Steiglitz Historic Park (south -west of Bacchus Marsh). Steiglitz is almost a ghost town today but in the 1860s and 1890s it was a busy goldmining township with hotels, shops, churches and a population of over 1,000. We will meet at the Bert Boardman Recreation Park on the Sunday for a BBQ lunch to celebrate another successful year for the club. However, for those interested, we are turning it into an overnight camping weekend in the Brisbane Ranges National Park, from the Saturday. Trip Leader: Stephen Whittaker—0438 441 916 or venue@subaru4wdvic.com.au SATURDAY (optional tour of Brisbane Ranges & overnight camp): Trip standard: Easy—there are plenty of great easy tracks to explore throughout the Brisbane Ranges National Park. These are all well-maintained dirt roads, where 2WD vehicles with standard clearance and highway tyres are fine. It’s a beautiful park set in a low range of mountains dissected by rock gullies. Meeting point: Take the Western Highway to Bacchus Marsh (exit at C602). At end of the off-ramp, turn left to head into Bacchus Marsh. Then take a quick right turn (after only 100 metres) into a very visible BBQ area car park. Time: 12pm on the Saturday Trip intention: Once we’ve all gathered, we will head along the Avenue of Honour into Bacchus Marsh for lunch. After lunch, we’ll depart Bacchus Marsh for the Brisbane Ranges National Park, loop the park and then settle into camp for the evening at the Boar Gully Camping Area. Sunday morning will be a very leisurely rise, followed by a drive down to Steiglitz for the Christmas Party. Please let Stephen know your intention if you have not already done so via email: venue@subaru4wdvic.com.au Camp Booking: If you are camping, it is recommended you book your site on the Parks Victoria website: www.parkstay.vic.gov.au. Sites are $14 for the night. When booking, search ‘Boar Gully’.

TRIP & SOCIAL REPORT SUNDAY (the Party!) Venue: The Bert Boardman Recreation Area, in Steiglitz Historic Township. You can find Steiglitz easily in any Melways or GPS. However, directions are provided on the following page. Time: From 12 noon on the Sunday Catering: Meat and soft drinks will be provided. Please bring a salad or dessert to share, plus your own cutlery, crockery, BYO drinks and glasses and chairs. For catering purposes, please CONFIRM YOUR ATTENDANCE WITH NUMBERS (including NUMBERS OF KIDS) by Thursday 22 November to Stephen, if you didn’t provide this fully in the trip intention sheet at the October general meeting. Santa Claus: An invitation has been issued for his attendance. Parents of children will need to bring appropriate gifts for Santa (or his deputy) to present. There are plenty of historic buildings to see and grounds to walk around in Steiglitz. After lunch, those who are up for it can walk to the township from the lunch spot. VISITORS: Visitors to the Christmas Party are welcome. Any visitors, including children, will be expected to pay $10 per head for insurance (which will be forwarded to 4WD Victoria). The Club will collect this on the day. DIRECTIONS TO CHRISTMAS PARTY (Steiglitz): · Head towards Geelong on the Princes Hwy-M1 (travel about 56kms from top of West Gate Bridge) · Take exit for C704—Bacchus Marsh-Geelong Road, turn right and head north on this road (travel about 11.3kms) · Turn left into Carrs Road (travel 7.7kms) · Turn right into Geelong-Ballan Road—heading towards Anakie (travel 3.6kms) · In Anakie, turn left into De Motts Road (travel 8.1kms) · At the end of De Motts Road, turn left, then 100 metres later, turn right (travel < 1km) · Turn left into 'Bert Boardman Recreation Area' Page: 9

I plan to do a circumnavigation as best as possible. Some places to see are the Aurthur-Pieman conservation area, Port Aurthur and Wineglass Bay with as much in between as possible. Vehicle preparation is important as some of the areas will be very isolated, and we may encounter the extremes of mother nature. Page: 10
TRIP & SOCIAL REPORT Due to catching the ferry and needing national parks passes this can't be regarded as a budget trip. One way vehicle ferry charge is $89 plus $128 for an overnight 'recliner' per person. Booking the ferry will need to be done as early as possible so an early commitment is appreciated. See you on the Apple Isle! SIMPSON DESERT TRIP 2013 This trip has been on hold since 2011 due to inland road conditions, but hopefully will take place in 2013. JESSICA’S JOTTINGS I heard of an interesting occurrence at work the other day. A truck became bogged and needed dragging out; the only thing available to the crew was some rope. They doubled and tripled the rope to get as much strength as possible but still the rope broke. It is a timely reminder to note that when attempting any form of recovery rated recovery gear must be used. If it has not got a weight rating then don't use it. In the example above the only thing hurt was pride, but it could have been much worse Happy Travels Jessica Walsh

TRIP REPORTS GOLDFIELDS HERITAGE TRIP Saturday 12, Sunday 13 October By Martin Foot This trip was based at our hideaway in the Victorian Goldfields town of Maldon, 10 mins west of Castlemaine. The district has a rich history dating back to the Gold Rush in the 1850s. It’s not an area known for serious 4WDing, but does have many interesting tracks and back roads. The town also hosts many tourist events, including an Easter Festival, a Folk Festival and the annual Mt Tarrengower Hill Climb, run by Bendigo Car Club, we which had come to see. Maldon itself is surrounded by extensive heritage reserves, full of mine sites, tunnels, and poppet heads. The retail sector of town retains its period architecture and does a roaring tourist trade in old wares and furniture, memorabilia besides selling a lot of coffee. There is a tourist steam train to Castlemaine. However, there is not a lot of work available in the town and a number of homes these days are owned by retirees and part-time treechangers like us. We came up on Friday evening to open up and club members started arriving around lunchtime on Saturday. Michael Hartshorne was there early, as were Jean and Peter Bellis who brought their shiny new camper trailer. This was duly shoe-horned into the back yard.
Page: 13
TRIP REPORTS Jamie and Les arrived in the Brumby having navigated their way across half of Victoria, but unfortunately got lost in the town (!). Damian and Angela arrived with their grandson Brendan. We also had visitors, the journalist and 4WD trainer Robert Pepper and his family. Robert was road-testing the latest Outback and also took a number of photographs of Suboo (Les and Jamie’s Brumby).
Martin had prepared a navigation run around the district taking in sites of interest and after lunch, drivers and crews set off one by one to tackle the route. The trip skirted around Mt Tarrengower itself which was closed to traffic for the Hill Climb the following day, but included tracks on the Nuggetty hills to the north of the town and visited various local landmarks including the gold dredge on the Bendigo Road, the Maldon Cemetery and early settler homestead ruins in the heritage area to the south of the town.

TRIP REPORTS
I had somewhat underestimated the time required to complete the trip, especially since some of the locations invited a bit of a look around. As a result, some people did not finish before it was time to go for dinner at the Maldon Pub. Jean and Peter in particular spent half an hour in meticulous planning poring over the maps and clues before leaving, but had to cut the trip short as time ran away. Page: 15

TRIP REPORTS Over dinner there was much humour and good -natured uproar as I went through the clues and the answers. “Who are the guardians of Peg Leg Gully Road? The answer of course being the two border collies who try to bite your tyres as you pass, but I accepted the local aboriginal tribe and Parks Victoria as alternatives to keep the peace! Angela is still getting over it. In any case, the Stocks were declared navigation trip winners with a score of minus two (the scoring system being another bone of contention).
Over dinner Brendan introduced Les to the wonders of the Angry Birds video game on his tablet computer. Not sure who had the biggest grin.
Page: 18
TRIP REPORTS After dinner, the Stocks and Peppers headed home. Dot also went with Damian and Angela as she had to work on Sunday. The remainder bunked down in various corners of the property and awoke to a crisp sunny morning that suggested a very nice day ahead. As none of the remaining members had completed the navigation run, I led them along part of the route to show them the sights, ending up on Anzac Hill overlooking the town. An old Turkish artillery piece from Gallipoli was on show and attracted a lot of interest from the lads.
Arriving soon after at the foot of Mt Tarrengower, we parked the Subies and walked past some most exotic vehicles to the start of the Hill Climb. This is run by volunteers, but seemed very well organised nonetheless., with little fuss as competitors were sent off every few minutes and returned in convoy back down the mountain after each category had been completed.
Page: 19
TRIP REPORTS We saw vintage and classic racers, including a beautiful blue Bugatti and a number of MGs, as well as open wheelers and closed coupes, such as a Charger R/T. There were many early motorcycles as well, including a sidecar category (often the girlfriend was the sidecar passenger, which involves moving about to adjust the balance on corners and looks quite scary).
Most of us took up a vantage point up the hill and enjoyed taking photographs and videos. After about two hours we felt we had had enough and headed back to the house for lunch before parting company. Dot and I enjoyed hosting the event, which was the first social occasion since we bought the property last year. We look forward to doing so again some time. Thanks to all who attended and to those who expressed interest but couldn’t make it after the Hill Climb dates were changed. CLUB MEETING MINUTES Meeting closed at 10:05pm and was followed by supper. The Lucky door prizes was won by Lisa Jantke and Paul Saleeba. The next meeting will be held on Tuesday 27th November 2012 commencing at 8pm.The next-gen, 2013-2014 Subaru Forester has been revealed
2013-2014 FORESTER The next-gen, 2013-2014 Subaru Forester has been revealed ahead of its scheduled debut in Japan later this month. The model shows off vast styling and technological changes over the current model, and is slightly larger in all dimensions. As you can see, the sporty and very popular SUV has grown up a lot since the nameplate was introduced in 1997. The body features more curvy contours on every surface, while the front showcases Subaru’s latest new-look headlights and front grille layout. Power comes from the same 2.5-litre boxer four-cylinder engine producing 126kW of power and 235Nm of torque as the current model, however the zippy Forester XT sports version will come with a new 2.0-litre turbo boxer producing 186kW and 350Nm. A diesel variant is also on the way. Inside, the new Subaru Forester borrows much of its design from the new Impreza, of which the new Forester is based on. There’s Subaru’s traditional three control knobs below a multimedia interface, and s sporty three-spoke steering wheel for the driver. Nick Senior, Subaru Australia managing director, recently spoke about the new model and the changes it receives. He said, “There is more change – substantial technical change – and innovation, than ever before. But above all, new Forester is an SUV that won’t be confined to the suburbs.: “It’s a vehicle that could have been designed specifically for the Australian lifestyle – it’s all-road, all-conditions, all-seasons and this new one will go further than any previous Forester.” Page: 24
2013-2014 Forester “Indeed, it is a smarter, safer, further Forester! The local arm has announced the new model will be introduced in Australia during the first quarter of 2013. It will likely be sold locally as a 2013 model (MY2013). Prices are yet to be announced.

FOUR WHEEL DRIVE VICTORIA NEWS If any one can devote some of their time… I require your Help to erect interpretative signage for the Aberfeldy Heritage Project… I have been devoting 20 years of my time to our history in the Aberfeldy district, protecting, campaigning and to date, have uncovered more that 500 sites… many previously forgotten. Recently, I managed to get a substantial grant from DSE and Melbourne Water.. And have been working tirelessly on this project to list the sites on the Heritage Victoria database and preparing the interpretative signs to be erected. All equipment and materials will be supplied by DSE. All you need to bring is a pair of gloves… and if you have.. A fluro safety jacket or vest.. If you don’t have one, I can supply. Good work boots would be a good idea.. I do not recommend sneaks., I will be setting up a base camp near Aberfeldy… and will be there for 2 weeks at least…. Organising and working during that whole period. Now…. The dates we well commence are from Wednesday 31st November to about the 2nd December. You are welcome to stay as long as you want… just bring your camping gear and food. Base camp has a pit toilet, a large water proof shelter, sink, bbq, etc. and its on private land, so everything will be safe there. You can even access my wireless internet if you require to be in contat with the outside world. The work will comprise of erecting interpretative signage, historic direction signs, some brush cutting, and a little pack track clearing. Nothing too strenuous or back breaking at all. I must stress, it is not a family outing. I am on a tight schedule, and require workers not sight seers. If you want to be part of all this… I would greatly appreciate it. Please email me your mobile number, name… and any other names that are coming along… and most importantly… the date or dates you wish to be there. In turn, I will confirm with an email and directions to base camp. During the week help is preferable if you can do it….
