ABOUT THE CLUB The Subaru 4WD Club of Victoria Inc. was originally formed over 40 years ago by an enthusiastic group of Subaru owners. Today the club has expanded to include all Subaru 4WD and AWD vehicles, as well as all other makes of AWD, light 4WD and crossover/soft-roader type vehicles. The club aims to participate in the exploration of the Australian countryside without damage to the environment, vehicle or individual. Visitors are most welcome to attend the club’s General Meetings and contact committee members regarding participation in club activities.
The club relies on membership fees to offset its running costs, including insurance. Membership fees are payable each year, due on 31 May. Fees for the 2018/19 year were agreed at the general meeting in April 2018 and are as follows:

PRESIDENT’S REPORT Good day all, When is it sufficient number of times to ‘pre-trip’ an event? Recently an event reminded me of the importance of doing a ‘pre-trip’ for an upcoming trip, that for our Christmas Party on Sunday 25 November. Pre-trip no. 1: In early October when I had a look at the northern end of the Lake, there were no road works being carried out, and it looked the ideal local location, (having also looked at Norton Park, off High Street Rd, Glen Waverley, as another alternative). Pre-trip no. 2: On a whim, on Sunday 18th, I revisited Lilydale Lake. Well, imagine my surprise when upon driving along the roadway, narrowed to a path, where once parking was permitted, it was blocked, as well as the access removed to the walkway I had planned to carry the BBQ and other items to. See photo. So, based on the above, there is a change of location within Lillydale Lake reserve area, to that of entry at the main gate, on Swansea Rd, before the roundabout. You’ll find a map of Lillydale lake on the back cover of the magazine. Take the right fork, travel to the extreme end & hopefully the large pavilion will be secured by one or more of us.
Failing that, park in that area, walk onto the grassed area to the right, on the left of the building. There are overhanging trees for shade, and a close walk south to facilities of playground, toilets, etc. 6

VICE-PRESIDENT’S REPORT On Monday 12th November I attended Four Wheel Drive Victoria’ Annual General Meeting with Mark Tyssen (President). Since there was only one nomination per position formalities were quite quick. In many cases the committee changed roles. Victoria has now withdrawn from the national body due to concerns over financial irregularities. It is still unclear if Victoria will rejoin. The CEO pointed out that after 2 recent fatalities and other injuries, the insurance cover has changed to maintain current rates. Otherwise the increase was to be $14 years, or double the current rates. This means a reduction in benefits paid on a death to $50,000 and a decrease in the age limit (65) some benefits will be paid to. Senior members may want to look this up. Obviously we want to be safe out on the tracks but it may not hurt to check if additional cover is required for you. TRIP REPORTS “Secrets of the Dandenongs” Sunday 28 October By Martin Foot We met shortly after 9 at Knox City Council carpark, ready for the great escape from the urban rush to the tranquillity of the Dandenongs. At least, that’s how it would have been for our grandparents; but the urban sprawl has invaded the Dandenongs in the decades since, and due to the many popular tourist spots on the main roads, the traffic can be just as bad as in town. This trip was about re-discovering the quiet stillness of the forests, the sound of lyrebirds and mountain streams flowing. From Knox, we made our way to The Basin shops on Forest Road, before turning onto one of the last unsealed roads on the city face of Mt Dandenong: the Basin - Olinda Road. Here we were joined by the Stocks, who had returned from Woodside that morning. Driving up the mountain and taking in the views was a reminder of how all the roads in the district once had been. We chatted about our memories of trips with our parents many years ago. Emerging into the bustle of Olinda township, we left the main Tourist Road as soon as possible, turning down Dickens Road, then twisting and turning past along Fordyce Road past the butts of enormous Mountain Ash trees until we arrived at Olinda Falls. This natural beauty spot was quiet (it was after all, only 10am on a Sunday) and we walked down to the lookouts enjoying the majestic tree ferns, the sounds of bellbirds (or were they lyrebirds mimicking them?) and (less so) the squawk of cockatoos. No loos available here, so we moved on along the valley beyond, turning into the Silvan Dam reserve where we had morning tea amid the stately European gardens. Once refreshed, we turned back a short way before heading south through the forest reserve along Silvan Road, which steadily rises from the valley floor up to a lookout point where you can see to the Great Divide, across the R J Hamer Arboretum. After a brief stop, we found ourselves briefly on the busy OlindaMonbulk Road, before turning onto a local cut-through, Invermay Road, offering spectacular views to the east and the first of the large market gardens that have been a feature of the rural Dandenongs for a century or more. We emerged onto the busy Monbulk Road, before taking a right hand turn onto Macclesfield Road just before Silvan township. We motored along with no-one else to bother us, enjoying the views. It’s a relatively long road providing access to a series of rolling hills dotted with elegant farmhouses, vineyards and market gardens. Confusingly, it changes name to Swales Road when it crosses Woori Yallock Creek, only to meet up with another Macclesfield Road at the end! 11
A quick dog leg and we were on a dusty back road (Stranges Road). The radio crackled and Tim was in trouble. We headed back to find that due to ignition timing issues in his engine, his car had massively backfired and his muffler had torn open along the seam. He decided to withdraw from the trip and limp home. However, even this wasn’t possible. The Cruiser would start, but if the accelerator was lifted, the motor would fail immediately. Damian and Angela followed him out to see what could be done, while the rest of the group moved on in the direction of Kurth Kiln. Eventually, it was necessary for the Land Cruiser to be loaded onto a tow truck, which delivered him back home to Glen Iris by midafternoon, thanks to the boys from RACV Yarra Junction! The main group crossed Cockatoo Creek on Tschampions Road, before heading north along Woori Yallock Road then right onto Smith’s, then Beenak Roads towards Kurth Kiln. Due to delays, there was no time to stop just then, as we were due for pizza lunch at the Forest Edge restaurant shortly after 12. The Stocks having done what they could for Tim, came on via Gembrook township and met us there. Forest Edge is a very pleasant spot, with excellent views to the northern ranges across rolling fields and woodlands. The pizzas were pretty good, too! After lunch, the Gills left us, as they had things to do later in the day. The rest of us (now down to three vehicles) went back to Kurth Kiln and explained the history to those who had not been there before. Cups of tea were had next to the pond, while Martin took Angela along Shepherds Creek Track, to give her a taste of light 4WD-ing and an indication of what her very shiny Forester was capable of. From Kurth Kiln, we drove through Gembrook and Cockatoo, back amongst the traffic, before ending up in Emerald at the Nobelius Nursery & Museum on Crichton Road. This interesting place stands in memory of the Nobelius family, who operated a major nursery on the site for almost a century. Emerald Lake Park, originally their main source of water for irrigation, was gifted to the public. The nursery relied on Puffing Billy in the early days to get their produce to Melbourne, via Ferntree Gully. While we were there, the old engine chugged past the packing shed, with tourists on board, part of the rich history of the Dandenongs. The Museum is open on Sunday afternoons and is well worth a visit. TRIP REPORT Otway Tuesday 6 November (Cup Day) By Tim Folliard Despite overnight rain and a wet trip down the highway, we met at 9 am in Winchelsea ready to ht the recently re-opened Otway’s tracks. Travelling south, we soon encountered dirt roads and past the Vehicle Testing Ground, the first track. Having driven this area on a previous club trip, I expected some undulations, but the track seemed to have deteriorated over the years. The weather started to clear as we drove Haggards and Allardyce Tracks into Anglesea. The sandy sections were fine with shallow puddles but the earthen slopes were rutted and at times very slippery. It was very easy to slide and Charles’ Prado was the first to slide and be stuck behind ruts he could not drive over. In fact walking the slope wasn’t that easy. Clever use of his max tracks and he was able to self recover and continue on with the convoy. We then headed west to Hammond campsite. Only one person had set up camp. From there we head to Aireys Inlet via Gentle Annie Track. There are a few testing parts for those willing to try but enough bypass tracks around the worst parts. A koala crossed the track and we were able to stop and watch it slowly climb a tree. We had a late lunch at Aireys Inlet before continuing. The closure of the coalmine and power station had closed a few tracks behind Anglesea, so we diverted back to town, aired up and headed home to wash off some mud.

MEMBERS’ DRIVES Foot’s Four Foresters By Martin Foot I decided to take up Tim’s challenge in the last magazine and write about my Foresters. Dot and I may be unique in the club in that we have owned an example of each of the four series of Subaru Foresters, all quite different and intended for specific purposes. So here they are: 2001 GT (SF series) We thought this car was pretty svelte. It had mags, a sunroof, heated seats and velour upholstery and to us, it seemed to go like a scalded cat. It was promoted as having a “detuned” WRX engine and Dot particularly liked the way she could point it at a gap in the traffic and bingo, there she was. It did most of the things that Foresters are good for, but being a GT, it didn’t have a dual range gearbox. And wasn’t really an off-roader. So when in 2003, we decided to take Long Service Leave together and go around Australia, we started looking for a replacement.. We decided on: 2003 X manual dual range (SG series) (“The Banger”) We went down market a bit: steel wheels, no sunroof or heated seats. But it was the car for the trip, we thought, because we figured premium fuel would be hard to get, dual range would give us an advantage, and we could fit a cargo barrier and a UHF radio in the dash under the single CD head unit. This plain jane Subie took us up through the red centre to Broome and across to Cairns, then home again, without a hitch (apart from issues with the Dunlop Grandtrek AT2 tyres we had fitted). What an adventure! And the green Forester has been seen on many club trips since. It’s had three engines, rebuilt gearbox and replacement diffs in order to improve the gearing. Its paintwork has faded with the years and it sports bush stripes, it leaks air through the window seals so it’s noisy - but it’s the vehicle of choice for any 4WD trip for us. 2010 XS Premium (SH series) (“Pearl”) In 2016, it was time for another Long Service adventure, this time to Broome via the South West of W.A. We were after a touring car this time with a little more power and considerably more creature comforts, but still a manual. So we bought Pearl from a copper in Brisbane. We went to town on fitting her out, with Subaxtreme bulbar, bash plate, UHF radio, cargo barrier, rear wheel carrier, dual battery system, heavy 15
duty suspension, etc. We enjoyed the upmarket feel and the relative silence compared to the Banger, but found the rear suspension setup to be more than a little unnerving - loose and rolling. We fitted a beefed up rear swaybar to try to control this tendency. The trip itself was very successful. Once the car was loaded up with all our camping gear it behaved itself very nicely. Only the air- conditioning let us down in Port Hedland and then again in Marble Bar - not places to be without a little cooling! Add to this, the fuel consumption was not exceptional at around 12 l/100Km loaded (worse in a headwind on the Nullabor). So for our next trip we decided we wanted better fuel consumption and more power so we could tow a camper trailer instead of camping out of the back of the car. To do this we bought a ... 2015 2.0D-S (SJ series) (“Henry”) We had read that the best Diesel for towing was the auto CVT model, and since the manual doesn’t offer dual range, there was no argument about it. Henry was bought in Bega, NSW earlier this year . He is yet to be hitched to our new Caretta teardrop camper trailer, which we expect to be delivered very soon. But we are impressed so far by his smooth ride, quiet cabin, good fuel economy and strong urge when needed. We are looking forward to more long trips in 2019 and beyond, behind this latest steed.

TRIP AND RECOVERY GEAR The aim of all Subaru 4WD Club of Victoria Inc. trips is to have an enjoyable experience in the bush, increasing 4WD’ing skills and experience, whilst maintaining the highest regard for the safety of individuals, the vehicle and the environment. As a driver you have ultimate responsibility for the safety of your passengers and vehicle. It is the responsibility of any participating driver to contact individual trip leaders for clarification of individual trip requirements and standards. Financial members are encouraged to participate in as many trips as possible to increase confidence and experience. Visitors are welcome subject to the payment of the appropriate levy to cover insurance, but after two visits, should consider membership. Non-financial members are not covered by insurance and may not participate until payment is received. Individual drivers with concerns or queries regarding their vehicle and the trip standard should contact relevant trip leaders. The Subaru 4WD Club of Victoria Inc. recommends that each vehicle carry the following items or equipment on every trip:

Two rated D- Shackles (minimum 3.2t)

Rated snatch strap
4.
Recovery points, front & rear; plus, optional bridle strap, according to vehicle design;
5.
UHF (477Mhz) Channel 16 CB Radio. Ideally in car but hand held are ok provided sufficient battery(s) to last the trip.

Any vehicle not carrying at least the first five (5) items of equipment should contact the individual Trip Leader before leaving. Any club member unsure about any of the items of equipment listed above are advised to contact the Trip and Social Coordinator or the Trip Leader concerned. All Trip Leaders carry a complete First Aid Kit in case of emergency. All non-emergency medical needs are expected to be meet by individuals own medical supplies.

After discussion, it was agreed that these become assets of the club and be available for loan to members requiring them for club trips. Martin to be reimbursed $85.00 on submission of claim. Equipment List to be updated with respect to the above items.

A sign-out and sign-in procedure to be established for equipment loans. The club archives include a book for this purpose. Tents and BBQ currently held by Martin. Need better storage arrangements for the tents in particular. Mark may have suitable pallets. Trip and Social “Secrets of the Dandenongs” went well, apart from Tim having to withdraw because of a vehicle fault. Otways Trip was deferred until Cup Day due to repairs to Tim’s vehicle. Christmas Party –Sunday 25 November. Venue confirmed as Lillydale Lake. Entry from Hardy Street (not Swansea Road entrance). There are walks available and a playground some distance away. It was noted that an attendance sheet was not provided at the October general meeting, so we need to issue an RSVP to gauge attendance. Tasks: Notice to be prepared to go out to members with a map and a request to confirm attendance, including catering choices and any special requirements; and whether children will attend and expect to see Santa Claus. Based on response, meat to be purchased. BBQ, pop-up tent etc to be brought. Christmas – New Year High Country Trip. David Wilson will rung a high country trip based at Talbotville as in 2017. No further details to hand. Australia Day long weekend (26-28 January). Trip options discussed. Peter Landouris will lead if available (but may be OS – will know shortly). Trip leaders required for trips in 2019, over: Labour day weekend (9 – 11 March) Easter (19 – 22 April) Anzac Day (Thurs 25 April, possible 4 day trip 25 – 28 April?) Queen’s Birthday weekend (8 – 10 June) 7.3. Venue Video presentation by Peter Landouris at the November GM. Laptop / projector and screen to be organised. Portable speakers to be provided. Term deposit: It was agreed to transfer $8,000 into term deposit. Accounting software: Previously accounts have been kept using a private copy of Quickbooks. It was agreed to purchase a club subscription to Quickbooks at $70 p.a. if Angela so decides, depending on the complexity of the accounts. Moved Martin, seconded Tim. 7.7. Secretary Club Awards. Martin has sent nomination forms to members, no responses received. Decisions were made based on review of 2017-18 trip reports and Fines and Fun entries in the Minutes. Certificates to be prepared. Trophies to be engraved. Long term service to be recognised. 7.8. Vice-President / President Mark and Tim attended the FWDV AGM on 12 November. They reported as follows: The formalities (elections and reporting) took a very short time. For our members to be recognised as FWDV delegates with voting power, they will need to lodge a club delegates’ form. FWDV have formally resigned from FWDA as issues concerning the finances of FWDA become more serious, possibly involving a police investigation in S.A. Insurance death cover has been reduced by half, due to significant claims made recently. Loss of earnings cover has also been affected, with much reduced cover for anyone over 65 y.o. The alternative was to raise premiums significantly (currently $13 per member p.a.). FWDV chose the latter, wishing to keep fees down. There was concern expressed as to why people who were members of multiple clubs were required to pay the FWDV levy for each club. 8. Priorities and Planning This item will be the subject of a separate planning meeting, in order to review and progress the Outstanding Actions as listed below.

Tim, for destroying his muffler due to an ignition fault and having to be towed home to Glen Iris. Angela Bombadieri, for bottoming her suspension on a pothole. Presentation … by Clint and Laura from Top Line Communications in Lynbrook, who presented a range of gear, including: dash cameras, with sensors and “park mode” UHF radios, inbuilt and hand-held Antennas, explaining the difference between ground dependent and independent types and fittings. 11.
