PRESIDENT’S REPORT It is timely as we approach the summer season, that we take note to take care and be aware of our surroundings more than normal over the next three to four months. Recent bushfires have sprung up in many of the areas that we visit as a Club. For the first time in several decades the majority of Australia has been affected with raging out of control fires, some initiated by lightening during thunderstorms and others unfortunately deliberately lit. It is rare that “Code Red” is issued so early in the season across vast areas of South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland. We all have a responsibility to care for the environment, especially when we in the middle of areas we do not travel through regularly, do not be complacent. Take note of ‘Total Fire Ban’ days, and days identified as ‘Catastrophic’ as has been this very week in various States. Watch for the indications, listen to forecasts, be prepared to move out to safety. Trip Leaders will advise prior to the trip if any changes to the proposed trip will occur. We have commenced use of the new On-line Trip Coordination, please ensure your details are correct, and if you are experiencing difficulties, please contact Martin or Tim. At the last Committee Meeting, persons nominated for the various Club Awards were discussed, and prepared for presentation. It was not as easy as it sounds, as each nomination was scutinised with the Committee’s recollection of the trip the incident related to, often resorting to a trip report or notes. This weekend, on Sunday 24th November, we have the Club Christmas Party in Bundoora Park, Plenty Rd, Bundoora. See the separate email that was sent out mid-November. We hope as many people as possible are able to attend. Next Tuesday, 26th November is the last General Meeting for the year, we have a presentation of suspension components & systems, please show your support on what we think should be an interesting discussion. At the first General Meeting for 2020, on Tuesday 28th January 2020, we will have a barbeque in the adjoining park prior to the meeting, commencing at 630pm. During the holiday period, don’t forget to take those photos, as in order to have our Photo Competition in February, photos are required…. strange about that isn’t it ? If I do not see you at the Club Christmas party or at the November General Meeting, I hope you has a safe and enjoyable Christmas and New Year period. Keep to the tracks, Mark Tyssen President, e: president@subaru4wdvic.com.au

VICE-PRESIDENT’S REPORT It was great to lead a trip over the Cup Day long weekend to Mt Terrible and ending at Walhalla. Despite the rain, the tracks were all in good condition and it was impressive that driven with care, late model Subarus were able to navigate every track considering no other vehicle we saw was an AWD. it seems from the radio chatter some bash plates incurred some new scars. There is an advertisement for underbody protection in the magazine which you may want to check out. On Monday 11th of November, Mark Tyssen and I attended the Annual General Meeting of Four Wheel Drive Victoria in Bulleen. As most committee members are on multi-year terms there was no elections required, but I will summarise some other issues raised: 4WD VIC received a Regional Achievement Award for the 15,000 volunteer hours club members worked in 2018. In the future, anyone volunteering with Parks Victoria will need a Working with Children check (no fee applicable). The CEO (Wayne Hervey) reported that members are represented and consulted on land use/access committees across the state. Access to tracks is a priority and the CEO raised the late opening of the Dargo High Plains Road this year with the Shire and the Department due to yet to be completed works and members may have been accessing the road illegally to get to High Country tracks. A quarry near Toolangi is to be leased for training purposes. Rule change passed. Club office holders (Presidents, Vice-Presidents, Secretaries, Treasurers etc) are authorised voting delegates for 4WD VIC. They do not need to be separately nominated. In our case as we have less than 99 members we get one vote for the club. Each additional 100 members gives an additional club vote. Considering the National levy is still not being paid, I queried why the Victorian levy was not reduced accordingly. The response was that previously the levy was linked to the CPI but in 2013 new model rules removed this link. Tim Folliard Vice President, e: vice-president@subaru4wdvic.com.au

EDITOR’S NOTE The magazine is a little longer this month, thanks to a great trip report from Deb and Nick Leask, with plenty of pictures. While reading it I almost felt like I was there. It is also a good example of someone, other than the trip leader, documenting a trip, adding possibly a completely different perspective to it. It was great to see so many new members on the trip and how well Rick guided them through some of the more challenging sections. Again, it wasn’t just up to the trip leader to provide leadership on this trip and, as a result, I am sure that everyone really enjoyed being involved. Don’t forget to send through your articles, photos and videos for publication in the magazine or up on the club’s web site and Facebook page. Have a great Christmas and New Year but, above all else, be safe. If you are traveling in the bush during the summer make sure you pack a woollen blanket, for each person, where it can be easily reached in case of a bushfire. See you all in 2020, if not at the Christmas Party this weekend. Damian Stock The deadline for submissions for the next edition is:

TRIP REPORTS Mount Terrible Melbourne Cup Long Weekend By Deborah and Nicholas Leask Day 1 We woke on Saturday morning to a cold and wet day. The weather left us wondering what impact this was going to have on the track and camping conditions; but that’s part of the adventure, isn’t it? Going through Marysville to get a last slurp of petrol, we ran into Michael at the automatic petrol pump (no-one was injured). A quick trip past Marysville led us to Cambarville picnic area. Arriving about 10 minutes prior to the arranged 11am meetup time we were greeted by Peter and Michael, followed by Rick and Fred (Rick’s brother). There was plenty of time for a chat with everyone while waiting for our illustrious trip leader Tim who was running 20 minutes late! On departure the touring group consisted of; Tim and Jack (Landcruiser), Rick (L Series), Michael (Forester), Peter (Forester), Nick and Deb (Outback), and Fred (Hilux). Joined the following day by Martin (Forester). The first target for the day was lunch at the Mount Terrible Hut.
12
TRIP REPORTS CONT. After a bit of discussion about appropriate tyre pressures while having a cuppa under shelter from the rain, we all aired down and made our way east to Big River Road. The track was easy with a few other vehicles seen along the way. We stopped at the turn to Hope Track to let a few other vehicles through and have a quick brief on the plan with Rick taking the lead. For the newbie’s (Michael, Nick and Deb), this track was the beginning of our initiation! The first slope on the Hope Track turnoff looked intimidating but was easily tackled and we all pushed on. The next steep hill posed a little trouble for Michael, but with help from Fred, a better line was decided on and we all got up the hill. Turning left onto Mount Terrible Track the rain became heavier and the track wetter meaning more mud! The track included a number of branching alternatives, which Rick directed the convoy through at each fork – often taking the more challenging side while most of us chose the easier route. The track was at times slow, rocky, and narrow. After a hard slog we arrived at Mount Terrible Hut in the pouring rain. Time for some lunch and a cuppa. The next target was a camping location for the night at Granny’s Flat Campground. We continued along Mount Terrible Track until turning right onto Poletti Track. The weather was deteriorating further when we were faced with a rocky monster hill. Taking it one-by-one we made our way up, picking our lines and sliding a little. There was great radio support from the entire group. At last we made it to tarmac and drove into Top to bottom: The ‘crew’ muster at Cambarville picnic area; Turning onto Hope Track; Waiting our turn to pick the right line; Peter makes it up the hill on Poletti Track; Mt Terrible Hut – where’s the view?

TRIP REPORTS CONT. Jamieson, just in time before the servo closed. Having topped up on fuel, we made our way to Granny’s Flat Campground. The campground was quite busy but we found a spot to setup camp. The rain continued to fall so the awnings went up with Rick, Nick & Deb creating enough shelter for the group to cook and eat together. While there, a fellow camper sheepishly came over for a chat, who turned out to be a previous member from around 2003 era. Dinner was made, and we chatted for a bit before turning in for bed. Much to Deb’s dismay, there was no campfire that night due to a lack of firepit on our site. Fred decided to skip tent setup and sleep in his Hilux; in the morning mentioned that he wouldn’t recommend it!
Dusk arrives at the Disher Lab.
Day 2 Rick and Fred were definitely the early risers with the rest of us up and making brekky around 7am. We all got to the business of packing down our wet gear while we waited for Martin to arrive. He got there on time, muttering something about bees. Today’s lunch-time target was Mount Skene. Tim had an amazing ‘shortcut’ that he proposed – ‘let’s go up Gallows Track just behind the campground as it will save us some Km’s and time….’ Famous last words! Michael, Nick and myself had our reservations as the first hump in the track had caused a number of drivers to bottom out the evening before. So at 10am we were off. Most of us navigated up the hill with some slight kissing of the bash plates except for Peter who needed the power to get up the hill and just decided to flog it. The track was rolling up and down nicely until we were faced with a long steep ascent. A few of the spoon drains were especially steep which challenged Peter’s Forester – it just ran out of gumption. Fortunately, Rick went back down the hill to tow him back to the top. I’ve never seen anything like it! Rick’s L class has clearance as long as Rick’s legs! Subsequent discussion about the need for a tow, and a quick review of the Forester manual identified the magic “P” setting (P for Power), the use of which removed the need for further hill-towing during the remainder of the weekend. 14
Back onto the Jamieson-Licola road, we drove up to Mount Skene. The road was mostly good, the forest gorgeous, the view most nonexistent due to the fog which meant visibility at times was 50m at best. But the back-lighting of the forest was eerily beautiful. Lunch was planned at a ‘lookout’ but on arriving both access roads that formed a loop were swimming pools. Rick jumped at the opportunity to take his car for a ‘swim’. It wasn’t too deep but the area was too muddy to really picnic at, so back down the road we went. Going back to another scenic lookout, we had a bite to eat and inspected the mud and bash plates on our vehicles. The target location for the afternoon was a camping site along the Donnelly’s Creek Track. We continued on to the hills out the back of Walhalla. Our path led us down through Aberfeldy and we saw some of the historical markers Rudy had spoken of at our last club meeting. Finally reaching Donnelly Creek Road, we turned off. Nick and Deb took the lead as they had previous experience of the track. We stopped at Jorgenson’s Hut and thought about making camp. The campers already there assured us that O’Tooles was 'better’ and ‘virtually empty’. Did we look that intimidating that they didn’t want to share? Rick and Fred were sent off in the Hilux to confirm while Martin managed to fit in 2 cups of tea. After a short while it was decided to continue on across a small creek crossing and camp at O’Tooles, and yes, it only had a few campers there. Camp was setup, dinners made and fire lit. A great time was spent around the fire until the rain started to sprinkle. Rick had set out tent No. 2 so Fred was able to get a better night’s sleep. Top to bottom: Setting up camp at Granny’s Flat; Peter needing a helping hand up the hill; Picnic lunch at Mount Skene; The line-up ready to turn into Mount Selema Road; Rick’s ever capable L-series
15
Day 3 Monday morning was glorious – blue skies at last! The sun slowly rose over the mountains and showered the camp in misty rays through the tree canopy. Breakfast was made and there was enough sunshine to dry out the tents before decamping. The morning entertainment was provided by Martin who was packing up his popup tent – which looked like some combination of bushcraft and an MMA wrestling demonstration – Pop! (again). The mornings destination was trek-end at Walhalla. By mid-morning we were on our way, continuing down Donnelly Creek Track. We had intended to include a walk to the Morning Star Water Wheel, but we were unsure which track to take and ended up missing the turn-off. Definitely something to come back to another time. [NOTE: A post-trip review of this goal and the attempts made on the day revealed that we could never have walked from Morning Star Track to the water wheel walking track anyway, as it is a steep slope through full bush. The correct access to the water wheel walking track is via Middle Star Track (also known as Willoughby Spur Track).] Continuing on we found a number of side-tracks that some members tried – some of which looked like rollercoasters. A large wedge-tailed eagle soared overhead, following the ridgeline.
Top to bottom: Martin’s ready for dinner; Relaxing by the campfire; The old and the new; Michael negotiates the creek crossing at Store Point
The last track of the day was Mormon Town Track, just north of Walhalla. This track meandered through gorgeous flowering bush, had some fun uphill stretches and took the convoy through bushfire affected forest. This was especially spectacular with grass trees lining the hills, all taking advantage of the additional light and nutrient available when the forest has burned, with most sporting 1-2m high flower spears. 16
Before long we were back on the road to Walhalla and suddenly found tarmac under our wheels – ‘what was this smooth black stuff?’ and ‘what are these shiny clean cars in the village?’ Martin quipped over the radio. They obviously don’t know how to have fun! Stopping at one of the picnic areas the weather turned foul with icy wind and rain. After a quick muster, tyres were inflated and it was time to head home. We had an awesome weekend! Many thanks to Tim for leading and for Rick’s invaluable expertise in helping us newbies! Lessons learnt: 1.
always have a thermos – Martin and Rick love their tea stops!
2.
When Rick or Tim say “yeah, I reckon it will be okay/easy”, give them a sideways glance.
3.
Shortcuts shortcuts.
4.
These Subarus are amazing in where they can get to! I never imagined driving up a mountain I could barely walk up.
5.
Despite the Outback having a slightly longer wheel-base than the Foresters, it was more than capable; imagine what a lift kit will do!

Discussion regarding this by Tim Folliard, Damian Stock and Michael Bauer. General Business 8.1 Damian updated the sad tale of repairs to his 2013 Forester XT. All repaired now and no more Christmas lights on the dashboard. His CVT required a solenoid replacement, but the quote was excessive at around $4500 and included work that he felt was unnecessary. In the end after much debate with Subaru, it was settled for $1400, with Subaru covering part of the cost. Part of Damian’s expenses included replacement CVT fluid, at $448!
.
8.2 Nick and Deb Leask gave a report of their trip to Broome where they attempted to hire a Subaru to visit Cape Leveque, but had to settle for an X-Trail. Apparently Subarus are not popular up that way due to the cost of windscreen repair, particularly models with Eyesight technology. 8.3 Peter Kakalias gave an account of his recent 100Km bike ride for charity (Peter McCallum Institute). He successfully raised $1,000. 8.4 Andrew Jantke wishes to sell his first edition Impreza WRX, which is surplus to family requirements (ie, Lisa wants it gone). The vehicle has a long history in the club and has had many modifications over the years, including a 12 inch lift at one point (since removed)! It has a dual range gearbox with L-series ratios. It currently requires some minor work to get it back on the road. There are various engines available that could go with the car. Martin suggested he place an advert in the next magazine.

Fines and Fun - deferred to the November meeting, due to limited time available.
[The meeting then broke for supper and returned shortly after 9pm for the presentation.] 10. Presentation: Martin welcomed guest speaker Rudi Paoletti, from West Gippsland Relic, Mining and Heritage Protection, Inc. Rudi spoke about the relationship he has forged over the years with DELWP to assist in management and protection of the mining history of the Aberfeldy Track. Rudi has published many maps and books of the area over the last 30 years. 26
The Track stretches from Walhalla in the South through to Jamieson in the north. Many interpretative signs have been installed by Rudi and his group, in an attempt to better inform the public about the history of the area, as well as identified locations that need to be protected from actions of other authorities with less interest in preserving the history. He gave examples where trees have been felled carelessly, causing damage in cemeteries, historical sites bulldozed for fire breaks, etc. Rudi’s group has explored many abandoned mine sites, often requiring an abseil to access, and finding many items of interest, including the dated signatures of miners on the walls. His talk, which was supported by overhead projection, was entitled “10 Stories of the [Aberfeldy] Track”, and focussed on the graves and other relics of early pioneers, many of whom came to grief in the harsh environment of the nineteenth century. In one case, the discovery and restoration a gravesite belonging to a pioneer woman, lead to a major family reunion onsite, with descendants coming from across Australia to attend. Rudi also brought samples of his maps and publications, available for sale to members process. Thanks to Glenn Arkell for providing the system with his website design. 11. Meeting closed at 10:15pm approximately. 12. The next meeting will be held on Tuesday 26 November 2019, at Camberwell South Tennis Club, commencing at 8pm.
