ABOUT THE CLUB The Subaru 4WD Club of Victoria Inc. was originally formed 40 years ago by an enthusiastic group of Subaru owners. Today the club has expanded to include all Subaru 4WD and AWD vehicles, as well as all other makes of AWD, light 4WD and crossover/soft-roader type vehicles. The club aims to participate in the exploration of the Australian countryside without damage to the environment, vehicle or individual. Visitors are most welcome to attend the club’s General Meetings and contact committee members regarding participation in club activities.
The club relies on membership fees to offset its running costs, including insurance. Membership fees are payable each year, due on 31 May. Fees for the 2017/18 year were agreed at the general meeting in May 2017 and are as follows:

NOTICE TO MEMBERS PHOTO COMPETITION - 2018 Our photo competition is fast approaching, so it is time to start looking through your photos and picking out your best ones to enter. The photo competition will be held at the February meeting in 2018.
CATEGORIES: Best portrait photo (photo of a person) Best group photo Best landscape/nature scene Best close-up nature shot (flowers, animals, etc.) Best action shot Best recovery shot Funniest photo All photographs submitted must have been taken in the last two years (2016 & 2017) at a club event. Any photographs that have won a prize previously are not ELIGIBLE to enter. There is a limit of one photo per person, per category (however, family membership allows for each member to submit their best photo" but they must have taken it themselves.) PRESIDENTS REPORT Sand driving can be both challenging and a lot of fun. I must confess I have not previously experienced such driving like we recently had on Duncan and Lee’s trip to the sand dune area managed by the Portland Dune Buggy Club. It was great to explore my capabilities (and limits) and my vehicle’s abilities in a range of sand conditions – from dry to wet (it did rain), climbs, steep descents, and steeper descents! It was the steep descents that I found most challenging or frightening; not dissimilar to the fear I experienced when I first tried abseiling. Another great trip enjoyed by all. I recently read an interesting article about how Subaru of America has approached their advertising over the last 20 years. Subarus are not your average car, and it was impractical for them to try to compete for the same demographic as the larger manufacturers, so they took a smart approach. Basically, find out which groups are the current major purchasers, then target the advertising at those groups. When they did the market research they found five groups, including one they didn’t expect. Those groups were teachers and educators, health-care professionals, IT professionals, outdoorsy types, and lesbians. To Subaru of America’s credit they have marketed to all five groups and created a strong brand loyalty. I have no idea if Subaru Australia uses gay-friendly advertising. Such advertising has evolved to be very subtle yet effective, to the point where the majority of the straight audience is oblivious to the hidden hints. Last week Janelle and I travelled through rural areas of NSW. For those of us accustomed only to our Subarus or other ‘soft’ or ‘city’ cars, there is a starkly different vehicle mix in those areas. In Moree we parked in a busy street for a coffee. On the opposite side of the road I saw seven vehicles side-by-side (reverse parked) where every one was a large 4WD with bullbar. No, they weren’t part of a group. On the side where I was parked there were just two sedans, while every other vehicle (more than a dozen) was either a station wagon or ute. Maybe those two situations weren’t typical for the area, but one would be hard pressed to see a similar grouping in Melbourne. When we travel, whether it be just within our own state or to the other side of the world, we experience different life styles. Those experiences are invariably very rewarding and enriching. Right now, I am back in comfortable Melbourne, so I will see you on Tuesday – unless you have disappeared for new experiences. Dale Rebgetz. 7

DRIVER TRAINING Dear Members, Re: DRIVER TRAINING I just wanted to give you an overview as to why the driver training was cancelled that was scheduled for the weekend of the 21st and 22nd of October. Essentially, we didn’t have the numbers to make it worthwhile for the trainers from the Toyota Land Cruiser Club of Victoria (TLLCV) to conduct the training on our behalf. They volunteered their time, at no cost to our club, to carry out the training but given we only had 4 confirmations, two of which were repeats, the decision was taken to cancel the training. I realise that the date had changed from when originally proposed in September, this was unavoidable due to a clash at the training facility that was scheduled at the time. It was originally proposed to use the TLLCV property and given that it is their property obviously their needs take precedence and the subsequent short notice change meant that you being the club members had prior commitments. The issue we have is that we don’t have any local members with the required Training Certificate that can run the course. Jessica who ran the previous training session now lives in Portland and is understandably unable to conduct the training from her current location. Utilising trainers from another club tends to mean if they are required by their own club they therefore cannot conduct our training and this is why we are working at short notice. So? What does this mean moving forward……. well that is the $64.00 question! The answer is that I am not sure. I will have a think, talk with other committee members and if you have any thoughts or suggestions please email me. It is disappointing we didn’t run the training this time around, all I can add at the moment is, please watch this space. Kind regards,

DRIVER TRAINING WHY WE NEED FOUR WHEEL DRIVE TRAINING! Four wheel drive vehicles have some amazing capabilities compared to an ordinary car. They offer you travel and recreation opportunities that would otherwise be impossible. However four wheel drive ownership comes with a greater responsibility than usual. Special knowledge and skills are required to help you minimise environmental impact and risk whilst maximising your recreational opportunities.

River crossings are one of those things that can make or break a 4WD adventure. If you get it right, you can access areas that others seldom go. But if you stuff it up, you can ruin your car, your camping gear and your holiday. So before you attempt to go charging through a raging river in your prized 4x4, it’s imperative you have a clear understanding of everything you need to consider to get to the other side.

TRIP REPORT Sunday 15th October Dior Exhibition @NGV. 70 years of Dior Attendees – Richard Saleeba Meredith Dale Sandy Christensen Edith Fullalove Lee Wegner What could be better than a Subaru 4WD Social Outing melding both Transport, Culture and fashion, I ask you? Only picking a date that did not clash with the Melbourne Marathon, which I can personally guarantee, you could not get near the NGV without a number and a pair of running shorts, no matter how much I pleaded AN IMPORTANT SUBARU ENGAGEMENT!! it wasn’t to be. Thanks to Richard for noting the Marathon and sending a link to all and to Sandy for sorting out a ticket while I trained it in from Richmond Station. The exhibition has been one of the most popular held at the NGV, we confirmed as we entered the exhibition, the guide noted several times it was akin to a sardine tin, fortunately the tickets allowed us to return to take in the displays we missed or wanted to linger at. There were many beautiful gowns, and suits all hand made by the House of Dior which we all took in longingly taking many photos. Christian Dior the founder of the House of Dior designed for 10 years, dying suddenly. Many famous Designers such a Yves Saint Lauren, Raf Simons and John Galliano continued the 5 themes of Dior Haute Couture continuing today. After the exhibition we retired to Southbank for a cuppa and a bite where we went our separate ways after having our fill of fashion for the day. Loved the exhibition, the company and watch this space for the next cultural experience.

TRIP AND RECOVERY GEAR The aim of all Subaru 4WD Club of Victoria Inc. trips is to have an enjoyable experience in the bush, increasing 4WD’ing skills and experience, whilst maintaining the highest regard for the safety of individuals, the vehicle and the environment. As a driver you have ultimate responsibility for the safety of your passengers and vehicle. It is the responsibility of any participating driver to contact individual trip leaders for clarification of individual trip requirements and standards. Financial members are encouraged to participate in as many trips as possible to increase confidence and experience. Visitors are welcome subject to the payment of the appropriate levy to cover insurance, but after two visits, should consider membership. Non-financial members are not covered by insurance and may not participate until payment is received. Individual drivers with concerns or queries regarding their vehicle and the trip standard should contact relevant trip leaders. The Subaru 4WD Club of Victoria Inc. recommends that each vehicle carry the following items or equipment on every trip:
1.
Personal details form as specified by FWDV, copy to Trip Leader
2.
Two rated D- Shackles (minimum 3.2t)
3.
Rated snatch strap
4.
Recovery points, front & rear; plus, optional bridle strap, according to vehicle design;
5.
UHF (477Mhz) Channel 16 CB Radio. Ideally in car but hand held are ok provided sufficient battery(s) to last the trip.

Fire extinguisher, accessible to the driver
2.
Spare tyre (full size)
3.
Jack and wheel brace, or equivalent
4.
Emergency supplies (matches, food, water and clothing)
5.
Sufficient fuel, oil and water for the trip and delays
6.
A tyre pressure gauge; compressor (according to the trip)
7.
An axe, bow or chain saw;
8.
A sturdy shovel (collapsible shovels are no good)
9.
Spare parts (appropriate to the nature of the trip)

Any vehicle not carrying at least the first five (5) items of equipment should contact the individual Trip Leader before leaving. Any club member unsure about any of the items of equipment listed above are advised to contact the Trip and Social Coordinator or the Trip Leader concerned. All Trip Leaders carry a complete First Aid Kit in case of emergency. All non-emergency medical needs are expected to be meet by individuals own medical supplies.

8.4 Membership Membership application – have received an application for single membership. The application was discussed by the committee. RESOLUTION
The committee resolved by majority to accept the Single membership application from Corey Peterson.
Six members have chosen not to renew their membership. Five other memberships are doubtful. Two members are still deciding. The membership register has been updated for recent additions. 8.5 Editor Last month’s magazine was printed externally with a heavier weight cover. Magazine needs to be produced in multiples of four pages. This month’s magazine deadline is Friday 20th October 2017. Edith to send the September publisher file to Peter for him to sort out creation of duplex PDF. 8.6 Treasurer Current cheque account balance is – $9,793.57. Total income – August/September - $2,322 – including membership renewal ($1,301), sale of club trailer ($750). Total expenditure – August/September - $1,570 – including FWDV affiliation fee ($550), hall hire ($630), magazine printing ($177). Term deposit balance is $5,000. Matures in July 2018. Sub-Committees 9.1 Communications Club email passwords have been updated for those positions that have changed. Members area in club’s website – development is continuing. Various members have been loaded up for testing. Have put in a new trip management facility. Need the committee to test the system by creating and signing up to virtual trips. To what extent does the club advertise it trips and events on the club’s website – not at all, a one-page summary, or full detail? There was no business arising from the minutes. 6 Correspondence 6.1 In Magazine from the Subaru 4WD of South Australia Subaru – thank you letter for copy of 40th anniversary book VicRoads – approval for the Victorian Club Permit Scheme Cadbury Fundraiser – chocolate fundraising 6.2 Out None. 7 Reports 7.1 Resources Kevin is on holidays in the Greek Isles. Club clothing is available. 7.2 Editor No report submitted. 7.3 Trip and Social Trip sheets are available for the upcoming trips Dior Exhibition 4WD Basic Proficiency Course – being running at Tallarook. Cost is $100. Theory will be covered one evening mid-week. 22
Wyperfeld – base camping at Big Billy Bore north of Wyperfeld over the Melbourne Cup weekend. Grand Ridge Road – day trip. Club Christmas Party – on Sunday 26th November at a location yet to be determined. Post Christmas high country – standing camp in the Talbotville area (near Dargo). Participants need to be prepared for difficult to very difficult tracks. 7.4 Venue Oct – video of Tominbuk weekend Nov – video of the May high country trip. Subaru's for sale as part of deceased estate near Euroa. 9 Fines and Fun 9.1 Nametags Kerry Gill, Les Scott, Bev Davison, Peter Mynard. 9.2 Last to Meeting David Wilson. 9.3 Trips 9.3.1 Mt Disappointment Charles Tan – being late. Tim Folliard – getting stuck on a steep hill. Michael – damp air filter after going through mud hill. Tim Folliard – getting geographically embarrassed. 9.4 Total fines collected - $4.20. 10 Guest Speaker / Presentation A very informative presentation was given by Ron Moon, from Remote Australia, of trips around the world, including Australia, and some pointers about the Canning Stock route. 11 The lucky door prize was won by Bev Davison. 12 The next meeting will be held on Tuesday 31st October 2017 commencing at 8pm. 13 Meeting closed at 9:38pm and was followed by supper.
