PRESIDENT’S REPORT On Saturday 14th September, from 930am till near 1pm, the FWDV held their ‘Members Update’ in nearby Doncaster East at Currawong Park on Reynolds Road, at the top of Springvale Rd. This was heaps closer that the last association meeting I attended, in mid March this year, when it was held in Rosebud, again on a Saturday morning. All club members would have also received this invitation to participate at Doncaster East, sent out by Martin several days before the meeting. So, what information did I glean from attending, you may ask? It was actually quite an interesting session, with the Park’s Conference Room full of persons from various other Clubs, asking interesting questions of the three presenters, and Ian (social media). Parking would have become an issue if more had attended, with a small hike from lower carpark would have been required. It didn’t rain. Topics discussed included: capturing voluntary hours clearing tracks etc., (including travel time & expense costs) when on Club trips or dedicated track clearing trip, benefit of reporting & methods of reporting to FWDV to assist with ‘lobbying’ and delivering social awareness to the public. what the association is doing on social media, mainly on its website & Facebook page, with commencement also of Instagram. the clarification of trip insurance with respect of what is considered the ‘start’ and ‘end’ of a trip; similar to the same concerns the Committee requested clarification on recently from the association’s insurer. Low & behold, the answer was the same. Lucky! there was also some discussion about the Clubs that have been involved in attending & monitoring at various popular bush camping grounds, the positive effect and the positive feedback that has been from the public, as it is not seen as a ‘policing role’. there was also a fair discussion regarding track closures and track openings, and what initiates a track closure - one is ‘apparent non-use for a period of two years’. It was suggested we all play our part in trying to maintain some ‘traffic’ on minimal used tracks. the association still is of the opinion to remain out of the National group, as it is waiting for answers to questions previously raised. Even when the information becomes available an association meeting will be held so that the member clubs can be consulted on the issue. In the last Committee Meeting, we discussed the topic of Fundraising. We would welcome someone to step up to coordinate and take the banner to aid us all for chocolate consumption. I can arrange the pickup of these delightful treats for the appointed ‘coordinator of sales’. Please let me know if you can help the committee, and the club, in this area. Don’t forget that September is a ‘short month’, with the next General Meeting to be held this coming Tuesday, the 24th. The date will creep up on you. Keep to the tracks, Mark Tyssen 5
VICE-PRESIDENT’S REPORT Where To Start - Recovery Gear A common question is what do I need to go on a trip. To start with a good snatch strap is a priority. As they stretch with use, straps have a limited life span (usually less than 20 snatches) so there is a general reluctance to lend straps. Look for one with an 8000kg rating. Next you need to determine the recovery points on your vehicle. If you have a Hayman Reece style tow bar, the square receiver can be used with the pin through the end of the strap. Never use the tow ball. Google the result. It can be fatal. Some vehicles have recovery points in the shape of loops. Be careful as some vehicles have tie down points which are not recovery points. Check at a club meeting with a member with a similar vehicle to see where the recovery points are. It may be necessary to fit aftermarket points. In this case a shackle or two is needed. Make sure they are rated, that is they are steel stamped with either a 3.5 or 4.75 tonne rating. Obviously size is important as they need to be able to fit the vehicle. Soft shackles are also available. A bridle strap can also assist as it spreads the force over 2 points in the vehicle. There is plenty of recovery gear in the market. But for a club trip a snatch recovery is the most common so as a minimum have this equipment. Tim Folliard Vice President, e: vice-president@subaru4wdvic.com.au

TRIP REPORTS Mount Disappointment By Tim Folliard In 1824 Hume and Hovell climbed 800 metres expecting to see Port Phillip Bay at the end of their trek from Sydney. Trees blocked any view and their disappointment was reflected in the name. On Sunday the 18th August 2019 the Suburu Club also attempted the climb of Mt Disappointment. While the walk to the summit is only 3.6 km return, a large storm was about to hit so the decision to head home early proved a wise one. Another time. After a delayed start, the president arrived and it was time to leave the Wallan cafĂŠ carpark and head east. The turn left on the Whittlesea-Wallan Rd traffic lights seems to have created confusion. Upfront I could see 4 Subarus behind me on the road out of town. Behind us it seems three conveys formed. Rick heading back to the freeway while Mark and Nathan following another vehicle somewhere else. To be fair, I haven't seem as many Subaru Foresters in one area since a trip into Jindabyne a few years ago. After phone calls and radio messages, the convoy all formed up and aired down in Mahady's Rd. It quickly turns to dirt, narrows and into the State Forest we go. From Mill Range Rd we enter Quincy's Break Track and into Clarkes Rd. Four wheel drive is required and the descent is quite steep, though despite recent rain well drained with good grip. There are some ruts to avoid, a section of smooth rock and some good sized drainage mounds to cross. Good fun drive although Jasper (my dog) slid off the seat into the footwell several times indicating the angle of the vehicle. At the bottom of the valley there is a small creek crossing which a few of us crossed to scout the climb out. Disappointment. The first hundred metres seems to be a rutted, slippery, muddy mess. Yes there are wheel ruts but the consensus was they would have been sliding down, not powering up. Beyond that the track looked fine again. Turn around and go back up the hill. But first the trip leader need to get across the creek and over the first muddy climb. Couple of slow approaches and running out of grip just before the top. All wheels spinning and tyres full of mud. Out come the max tracks to no avail. Then Damian suggests, 10
TRIP REPORTS CONT. try a higher gear and a faster run up through the creek. It works, up and over and back on dry track. Rick does it easily and then Martin and we are all heading back up the track. One of the instructions was wait until the vehicle in front has cleared the obstacles and the series of climbs meant vehicles were out of the line of sight over about 500 metres. Quickly up the hill and calling the next one through. This turned into a delay as a few of the Foresters found the going a little tough. Lots of guiding and advice from back in the convoy was required to talk everyone through. A quick run to the Mt Disappointment car park for a late lunch. The sunshine had gone and it seemed it would rain at any moment. Cancel the walk to the top and head back west. Before departing the park checked out one of the better known tracks called The Ladder or sometime Bump. Walked the first few hundred metres and it seemed a narrow downhill track but quite driveable. Then quickly turns into huge ruts and deep drops offs. Lots of rocks bearing diff scrapes and rubber marks. And being narrow there is no way around or turning back. Having seen the bog holes at the other end, this is a tough track. Heavy rain starts to fall so back into vehicles and head home. The freeway is wet enough to wash most of the mud away. This park warrants an overnight stay (there are 3 campgrounds) but in warmer weather and with dry tracks. Attendees: Tim Folliard

EDITOR’S NOTE Well it looks like I’m back for another year of magazine production, and social media publishing, so I’m on the look out again for interesting things to put in the magazine each month. If you have anything you would like to share with your fellow club members, or for the club to use in promoting itself on social media, just send it my way or let me know where I can collect it from. Without your help I can’t do my job so don’t forget to take your still cameras, smart phones and video cameras out on your next club trip and capture those fun, and possibly embarrassing, moments that always happen when we are out on the tracks. Thanks again to those members who provided trip reports, photos and articles again this month. I hope you all enjoy the magazine and, if you are on Facebook, do a like on the club page. Don’t forget to obtain your login from Martin for the club’s web site so that you can begin using the new trip booking system. Damian Stock The deadline for submissions for the next edition is:
