Hamlet By William Shakespeare

Hamlet is one of Shakespeare’s great tragedies. It deals with the psychological torment of a young Danish prince, Hamlet himself, who is racked with murderous intent. Hamlet’s father, the King of Denmark, is dead and the King’s brother (Hamlet’s uncle), Claudius, has married the widowed Queen, Gertrude. Hamlet is disgusted and cannot bear that his mother has betrayed his father’s memory in what he considers to be an incestuous manner. When the ghost of the dead King appears to Hamlet and fills him with a powerful desire for revenge, Hamlet becomes more and more desperate to destroy Claudius and avenge his father’s memory. However, despite this desire to kill his stepfather, Hamlet struggles to achieve his purpose and a series of disastrous events ensue. Hamlet is Shakespeare’s greatest tragic hero and, while the end of the play is inevitable, the unravelling of the story is a wonder. Each scene is rendered in words of poetic beauty that simultaneously delight and horrify. The play is still as relevant today as it was when it was first written and performed as society is still troubled with political intrigue and deception, the hunt for bloody revenge, the tortures of a doomed love, and the cruelty of bereavement and loss.

Brave New World By Aldous Huxley

The book focuses of modern humanity’s dilemma between the science and emotions, the old and the new, between individual freedom and social stability and between materialism and spiritualism. The novel depicts a new society where human being are deprived of individual freedom, programmed to certain

Catcher in the Rye

types of behavior and conditioned to respond in scientific ways to certain stimulations. Human emotions and relationships are no longer important. In the society where love and marriage do not exist any more, sex has become a casual experience encouraged from childhood. There is a clear warning in the novel

against contemporary tendencies – escaping reality through drugs, the growth of mindless entertainment, free sex and increasing power of mass media. It is quite clear that the new brave world is less inviting than the old world order (or the actual future today) with all its disadvantages.

By J.D. Salinger

The Catcher in the Rye” follows the story of Holden Caulfield, a teenager like no other, and at the same time like every other teenager. He is pretty much a loner, having his brother Allie die young and reaching to him in times of solitude. He failed in his third school, and has to leave school

early because of being expelled. He decides he has three days to spend on Manhattan before holidays arrive, and he can return safe home. All of the varying myriad of characters that Holden will take are not stereotypes, but human beings and perfect creatures of their environment. The

quick empathy will make Holden the perfect anti-hero, that will slowly gain the reader´s heart. If anyone ever was a teenager, is or still has the soul of one, “The Catcher in the Rye” will make a deep and lovely experience for him/her. Bonding with the written, the Holden within will arise.

The Power and the Glory By Graham Greene

The Power and the Glory follows a priest in hiding, the last survivor of the suppression of the Church by the Mexican government. Graham Greene suggests through this novel that organized religion, especially the Catholic Church, cannot be destroyed by force (indifference is the only thing powerful enough

for that). A mother telling her children any story symbolizes its lasting power and continuing importance: in this case the stories are of Mexican heroes who refused to give up their faith. As this particular woman’s husband points out, even the priests she considers immoral and wayward would become martyrs in her stories

once captured and shot. The anti-clerical movement, characterized by the novel’s petty, cruel, nameless officials, is thus shown throughout to be counterproductive. The failings of the clergy and religious sentiment in general are shown alongside the brutality of the government.

Ladies She’s pretty hollow… literally It was a known fact that Winehouse was prone to self harm, depression and drugs. But the downward spiral started about the same time Winehouse got married to Blake Fiedel - Civil. Their numerous nasty and sometimes violent fights were well documented by English tabloids. Their excursion to rehab lasted 5 days. One arrest for possession of cannabis, one canceled tour, one overdose, one picture of Amy wandering around in her bra and jeans, one husband in jail and one video of her smoking crack later - Winehouse finally said yes to rehab.

Who let her be famous? Who knows. But she became notorious with the release of her sex tape. Then she was charged for DUI and got 36 months probation, but she was caught driving without a license. She spent 22 days in LA’s jail. The day after she was released from jail she appeared on Larry King and talked about her Bible reading ways and vowed she changed. We’ll see about that, Paris.

the “doghouse”

All that money and what does he do? He arranges illegal dog fighting matches and some gambling on the side. In April 2007 dog fighting facilities were found at his estate in Virginia and Vick was sentenced to 23 months in jail, but he also has 2 state felony charges hanging and if convicted he might face up to 10 years in jail. Vick was suspended indefinitely by the NFL. Vick had to repay almost 20 million dollars to the Atlanta Falcons for the bonus he received and all of his endorsements have been terminated. Since his trial in April, he is back playing for the Philadelphia Eagles.

On the crazy couch What went wrong? He started dating Katie Holmes and jumping on the couch. After a whirlwind romance the couple had a baby (Suri still remains one of the most photographed toddlers in the world). Cruise is a long time supporter of the Church of Scientology. Combine that with the Holmes romance (that was rumored to be a publicity stunt) Cruise went from one of the Americaís most influential celebrities and a heartthrob to a subject of parodies and scorn.
