Editorial A Different ... “What was, will be again, what has been done, will be done again, and there is nothing new under the sun” (Ecclesiastes 1:9) Dear Friends, As the new editor of the Friends of Mill Hill Magazine (FOMH), I sincerely welcome you on these pages of this mentioned magazine. Firstly, I want to thank all of you for the prayers, support and friendship you have given to our Mill Hill Missionaries globally and locally over the years.
Fr Paul Hien MHM “It doesn’t matter who does the work as long as the work is done” (O’Neil, Robert. 1995. Cardinal Herbert Vaughan. p. 498). I want to take up the challenge. Fortunately, Fr Jakob Kirchler mhm has agreed to join me in carrying out this noble task. I am very grateful to him for his support and encouragement.
Secondly, I want to say Thanks to Gerry Mooij mhm, who has been the editor of FOMH magazine for over 10 years. We wish him a happy retirement in his home country, the Netherlands. I also want to thank many people who worked with Gerry over the years to keep this magazine alive and rolling; they contributed in different capacities: as writers, photographers, fundraisers, distributors, etc. for the FOMH magazine. To all of you I say THANK YOU.
I trust that you will gradually find in this magazine some interesting and important news concerning our missionary works, our missionary appeals in Kenya and Uganda involving many volunteers and friends of Mill Hill in different parishes. We invite you to become a part of our missionary enterprise. As far as the FOMH magazine is concerned, I strongly believe that it is OUR magazine. It is our means of communication, appreciation and keeping in touch with one another locally and globally. We need to work together to make this FOMH magazine an interesting, attractive and inclusive project for all friends as well as all the members of the Mill Hill Missionary Society. Therefore, we encourage you, Mill Hillers, friends and the readers of this magazine to

I am aware of my limitations and shortcomings, but I am reminded of Cardinal Herbert Vaughan’s words:

contribute your missionary experiences, vision and opinions. In this way we will have a variety of topics concerning our missionary ministry in our contemporary society that constantly challenges us to read the signs of the times and to improve as the Mill Hill community in the East Africa Area. On this Mill Hill Jubilee of 150 years of love and service, various celebrations were held at different places like in Nsambya parish, (Archdiocese of Kampala), in Mbikko parish (Diocese of Lugazi) and in Kibuye Cathedral (Archdiocese of Kisumu, Kenya). To mark the joyful occasion six of our students from the First Cycle of the Formation House in Jinja, Uganda, have taken their Temporary Oath, and four students from the Second Cycle, Nairobi have made their Perpetual Oath. Three Mill Hill deacons were also ordained to priesthood in East Africa. A Jubilee Musical was also performed to honour all those who dedicated their lives to advocating and promoting human dignity. Many of our Friends of Mill Hill in Kenya as well as in Uganda have joined us in organising the celebrations of Mill Hill 150 years. Once again, I want to thank all of our supporters, the contributors, and distributors of this FOMH magazine. Without your support this magazine cannot reach all its readers. I also want to appeal to all our Mill Hill related friends, students, associates, and members to send in their inspiring articles of 700 to 800 words to share with our readers so we can all keep in touch. Please keep reading and passing the FOMH magazine on to your friends.

Celebrating 150 Years of Mill Hill’s Foundation On 19 March, 2016 held at Nsambya Parish, Kampala: An Impression Cardinal Emmanuel Wamala, the Papal Nuncio Archbishop Michael A. Blume, Archbishop Emmanuel Obbo and Emeritus Archbishop Denis Kiwanuka, Bishop Christopher Kakooza, and our Councillor for Africa, Andrew Mukulu, were among the many invited guests who were present at the special celebration of the 150th Anniversary of the Mill Hill Missionary Society of St Joseph presided over by His Grace Cyprian Kizito Lwanga, the Archbishop of Kampala. His Grace the Archbishop gave a memorable homily on this special occasion, recognising the presence and the contributions of Mill Hill Missionaries who had enriched Uganda and her Church. The Mill Hill missionaries arrived in Uganda in 1895 and were entrusted by the Holy See to minister to a vast area called then the Upper Nile Vicariate. The whole vicariate began in Kampala, Uganda, and ran eastward, northward to South Sudan, and into Western Kenya. This vast area was covered by the Mill Hill Missionaries for many decades until various dioceses were created in Uganda and Kenya.

The book of the Gospels is being carried by a child on a MHM boat
The Mill Hill missionaries were able to establish many parishes, schools and minor and major seminaries, as well as hospitals and medical centres. One of the first parishes the Mill Hill Missionaries were able to set up was St Peter’s Catholic Church, Nsambya, Kampala. On this special occasion of 150 years of their existence the Mill Hill missionaries together with the local Churches wanted to give thanks to God for all that the Mill Hill Missionaries had been able to do over the years to establish the local churches in many countries throughout the world, especially Uganda. Archbishop Cyprian Kizito Lwanga named in his homily many of the parishes, the schools, the minor and major seminaries and the hospitals that the Mill Hill missionaries had established here in Uganda. He also mentioned the moral support and the dedicated service and unity which the Mill Hill missionaries gave to the people of Uganda. Fr Philip Adede MHM, our Society Representative for the East Africa area, gave a hearty welcome to all at the beginning of the Eucharist and at the reception. Fr Andrew Mukulu MHM, the Councillor for Africa, offered words of thanks to all of the dignitaries and all those present on behalf of the General Council. He also gave a short history of Mill Hill Missionaries working in Uganda and the hardship and serious challenges they had faced during their ministry. Many had lost their lives due to tropical sickness. They were, however, able to persevere and continue to establish parishes, hospitals and schools. He gave thanks to each and every person who was involved in, and/or contributing in different ways to the celebration.
6
He thanked Fr. Joseph Balikuddembe Ssemanda, the parish priest, and all the parishioners and helpers of Nsambya Parish who had contributed tremendously in kind and in quality time to the celebration, and made their church available for this important event. Thanks were also given to the Mbikko parishioners, the Mbikko joint choir and the brass band who had sung and played music beautifully at the Eucharist. Also thanks to all students of the Mill Hill Formation House in Jinja who had thrilled the congregation with the Gospel procession. During the reception the Papal Nuncio, Michael A. Blume SVD, provided a short testimony of how he came to know Mill Hill as the Missionary Society of St Joseph, distinguished from the Congregation of the Divine Word and other congregations. He spoke of his admiration for the numerous stained glass windows laboriously created by Br Joseph van Heeswijk MHM in different churches in Uganda. Some of these stained glass windows are featured in the Mill Hill Missionaries’ 150-Year Calendar 2016. A special thank too to all members of the Organising Committee headed by Fr. Bernard Phelan MHM; Fr Cyprian Masembe, the MC in the Church, and Fr. Joseph King MHM, the MC at the reception; Ms Janet Alungat, a Coordinator of the Friends of Mill Hill in Uganda, together with so many other friends of Mill Hill, who had spent days in, days out preparing for the occasion. To all of them and all those worked quietly and tirelessly behind the scenes, we Mill Hillers are very grateful and register our thanks and deeply-felt appreciation for their generous love and service.

Mill Hill Students Sing Mill Hill Anthem at the Feast
We are indebted to all those whose presence and moral support made the day a blessed day for all to be thankful for. In short, congratulations to all supporters, benefactors, friends, students, associates and all members on this historic celebration of the Mill Hill Missionaries 150 years of loving service. After the Eucharist all went to pray at the graveyard in the church compound where many early Mill Hill missionaries were buried. There are also many others who died and were buried elsewhere in Uganda. All Mill Hill missionaries martyred during their ministry were featured in the solemn celebration as their photographs and stories were displayed around the altar. They too were remembered and prayed for.

Continued p. 9) It is a charming detail that the parish of Oloikirikirai is dedicated to St. Therese of Lisieux, the patroness of Missionaries and Fr. Lawrence has been appointed to Ilung parish in Cameroon, also dedicated to St. Therese of Lisieux. Surely, this is the sign that the blessing of God will remain in Oloikirikirai and its people for ever. Thanks every one. (Received from Fr Jakob Kirchler mhm).

Fr. Lawrence Otieno’s Thanksgiving Mass The sun smiled on the beautiful green hills of Oloikirikirai on the 21st of February 2016. The day of the thanksgiving Mass of Fr. Lawrence Otieno was beautiful to be celebrated. Nature appeared in all its beauty and charm. The faithful gathered from all directions in their colorful clothes, especially the Maasai women in their traditional attire. From the many outstations of the parish people came for this unique occasion. At 10 am the Eucharistic celebration started. The choir greeted the Entrance procession with the liturgical dancers, the altar servers, the priests, and Fr. Lawrence Otieno, who had been ordained on the 6th of February at Ngong Cathedral, sprinkled the faithful with holy water as he walked in the procession.
Fr. Lawrence Otieno MHM Fr. Damien Afuti MHM thanked the people on behalf of the Mill Hill Missionaries for the wonderful celebration. He spoke about the missionary vocation —a universal vocation; here was he, a Cameroonian ministering in Kenya, and here was Fr. Lawrence, a Kenyan, who was about to go and work in Cameroon as a missionary. The parish priest of Oloikirikirai told us that he had known Lawrence from childhood and attested that Fr Lawrence is a very hardworking, generous and committed person (Continued p 8).
Fr. Lawrence completely hid his nervousness throughout the celebration as he conveyed a very obvious joy. The assistant priest of the parish Fr. Anthony made sure that everything went smoothly. The choir was excellent and the liturgical dancers enhanced the joyful spirit of the celebration. Fr. Barabara, a long time mentor and friend of Fr. Lawrence reminded Fr. Lawrence in his homily of what to expect as a missionary priest and also of what would be expected of him.

Our Four New Members Who Took Their Pepertual Oath on 21 May 2016
(L – R) Chrysantus Munu, George Odero, David Odonya and Cosmas Omboto after having made their Perpetual Oath
The following are the testimonies of our new perpetual members: I am Munu Chrysantus Mbiemieh from the Archdiocese of Bamenda – Cameroon. My call into this way of life was not as dramatic as that of Samuel but as far as I can remember that yearning to serve God as a priest started when I was still a child. This longing reached the climax through my encounter with Fr. Henri Peteers, one of the veteran Mill Hill Missionaries in Cameroon. This encounter became a turning point in my life. I felt called to become a missionary and decided to join the Mill Hill Formation Programme in Nkwen, Bamenda. Currently, I am in third year Theology in Nairobi. I am George Omuto Odero, from Asumbi parish, in Homa Bay Diocese. I came to know Mill Hill through a leaflet I picked up in class. I consulted a classmate who helped me to contact the Mill Hill Vocations Director. Then I realised that the schools I went to and my parish were both founded and built up by Mill Hill missionaries. The stories I was told by our grandma about the brave missionaries were actually the Mill Hill Missionaries. I felt challenged by their courageous service.
12
I am David Masiga Odonya from Kajiado Parish, Ngong Diocese. My parents are Mr George Odonya and Mrs Rose Nerima; they both are originally from Budalangi, Port Victoria parish, Busia. From a family of eleven including my parents, I was born on Feb 17, 1986 in Uasin Gishu (Eldoret). My parents then moved to Kajiado in 1993, where I went to primary school. I went back to Eldoret for my high school in 2002 at Mother of Apostles Minor Seminary. I started my Basic Formation, in Luanda in 2007. Then I moved on to Jinja, Uganda for my philosophy studies, then to St. Joseph’s Formation House, Nairobi for Theology. During my formation, I was sent to Loyoro Parish in Kotido Diocese, Uganda for my missionary experience. It was an enriching experience. I am Cosmas Ondari Omboto. I come from Sengera Parish, Kisii Diocese. I have three brothers and four sisters; all of them and all my parents are alive. My parish was begun by Mill Hill Missionaries. I was baptized as an infant by the late Fr. Denis Treacy MHM (RIP). I used to hear stories of the Mill Hill Missionaries’ work, especially in my parish. Fr. Denis Treacy was the last Mill Hill missionary to leave my parish when I was about 10 years old. I was inspired by the Gospel of the Lord proclaimed by the missionaries. I feel I have been greatly supported in the formation to achieve the dream I had as a young boy. Thanks to those who have supported me to reach this far. May God Bless you all! (Received from Fr Jakob Kirchler mhm)
Thanks and Goodbye Fr. Gerry Mooij mhm, as mentioned earlier, is retiring to his home country, the Netherlands. He has worked over 50 years in various parishes; namely Lwak, Madiany, Sega, and Milimani Kisumu in the Archdiocese of Kisumu, Kenya. We thank him for his perseverance, faithful service to Mill Hill as well as his parish ministry including his work of ‘Communications’ to the local Church. Fr. Philip O’Halloran mhm who has been appointed Regional of the Irish Region as from 1st July 2016, has been the rector of the Formation House, Jinja, taught at the Philosophy Centre of Jinja (PCJ) and did various tasks for Mill Hill as well as in different parishes in Uganda over many decades. He was also the rector of the Basic Formation Centre in Luanda, Kenya. We thank him for his generously dedicated service to our Mill Hill Formation Programme among many other responsibilities. We wish him God’s blessings in his new ministry. 13
Mill Hill 150 Years & Temporary Oath A Joint Celebration of Mbikko Parish and Mill Hill Formation House, Jinja
On 1st May 2016, the feast of St. Joseph the Worker, a celebration organised by the people of St Charles Lwanga Parish, Mbikko, in gratitude and appreciation for the Mill Hill Missionaries’ Love and Service, took place in the parish to mark and give thanks to God for the 150-year jubilee of St. Joseph’s Missionary Society of Mill Hill. Also on this special day six Mill Hill students who had studied at Queen of Apostles, Philosophy Centre of Jinja and trained at our Formation House in Jinja took their Temporary (threeyear) Oath. The celebration was presided over by Fr. Bernard Phelan MHM, a Consultor of the East Africa Area. He stood in for Fr. Philip Adede, the Society Representative, who was unable to grace the occasion due to the passing away of his brother Tom Amek (RIP) in Kenya.
From L to R. Jean Louis Lekandome, Fredrick Botaka, Clement Kitoli, Francisco Omoding, Bruno Tumwesigye and Austine Ochieng make their Temporary Oath in the presence of Fr Bernard Phelan MHM.
14
Fr Bernard MHM, on behalf of the East Africa Area Council, witnessed the Mill Hill Missionary Oath by our six students through which they became our newly -initiated temporary members. In his homily, Fr Phelan used the imagery of African culture and the African family to describe how men and women would get married and have their own children so as to establish a family of their own when they grew up. It was their first priority to carry on the family tradition and be committed to maintaining their wider culture and tradition. However, these six young men had decided to follow Jesus Christ by choosing to become Mill Hill Missionaries. They would not have their own family within their own tradition and culture, but they will have a much larger family beyond their tradition and culture, beyond their faith and race. They would become brothers and “husbands” of all humanity. Such was the call from God. They needed to ask for the gift of faith, like that received by Joseph, who made a difficult choice to forego a family in order to protect Mary and the child Jesus. They were responding generously to God’s call by taking the Temporary Oath here today. Thanks was due to their parents for their generosity and sacrifice in offering their sons to God to serve God’s people as temporary members of the Mill Hill Society.
Gospel Procession at Mbikko Celebration
15
The Parish Priest of Mbikko, Fr Joseph King MHM, introduced to the congregation those who had come to join in the celebration all of the priests, religious and people of different groups and institutions. He gave thanks to all present, especially the people of Mbikko parish, who had worked day and night to make the celebration a reality. It was an unforgettable day for the many visitors from various parts of Kenya and Uganda who had come in gratitude and joy to witness their family member taking the Mill Hill Missionary Oath. Many parents and friends of the Temporary Oath takers were thrilled and became emotional when their candidate for the Oath was presented. The joint choir and the whole congregation engaged in dancing and giving thanks to God for the gift of loving service and friendship. It was also a joyful and blessed day for the many people, especially the Friends of Mill Hill group in Mbikko Parish, who had taken the initiative to organise the celebration. We Mill Hill Missionaries thanked and expressed our appreciation to them for their generous hearts, joyful spirit, kind actions and commitment to supporting and promoting the Mill Hill Missionaries. We thanked Fr Joe King MHM, Fr Fred Yangnyi MHM, the Parish Council and all of the Mbikko parishioners for allowing our Formation House to join in the celebration. We all felt blessed by the peace, love and togetherness experienced on this precious occasion. Paul Hien (Formation Staff)

A Brief Update on Friends of Mill Hill visits in Uganda As I wind up my work here in Uganda, I have been putting some things together and some of my work was connected with Friends of Mill Hill. Since September 2014 nearly 40 parishes and places have been visited (many of them more than once at this stage) and include Namugongo Shrine, Budini, Mill Hill House Kampala, Iyolwa, Toroma, St. Austin’s Mbale, Ggaba, Christ the King Kampala, Kyere, Kamod, Kidetok, Soroti Cathedral, Madera, Budadari, Kumi, Nsambya, Bukedea and Kajamaka sub-parish, Chelakura, Pallisa, Nagongera, Budaka, Achilet, Tororo Cathedral, Mbikko including Nakibizzi and Bukaya subparishes, Mapeera Nabulagala, Osia, Mulanda, by the time of writing. Visits planned for in the next few months are Kamuli, Gangama, St. Jude’s Nagulu, and other places.
Fr. Philip O’Halloran mhm and Resty Kinobe FOMH promoter preparing Mill Hill tins
Having gone out on a few of these visits all I can speak about is the wonderful welcome we receive, the hospitality of the parishes and the interest people have. From some places the returned tins may not be so heavy with paper or coins but we now know the prayers that are said, we see the enthusiasm and the generosity of people makes us very humble. These same people who have been part of a church, once very dependent on outside help, are now in small and big ways contributing something that contributes to the mission fund and goes to our African Mill Hill Missionaries and they in turn are able to use it to help people in some small way or assist them in their work. Even though many of the Parishes and places we visit are also struggling to make ends meet and may still be supported from outside, it is so encouraging and heart-touching to see now how people are thinking beyond their own local needs and giving towards the work of the church in other areas. Our younger Mill Hill men are working in many places that you might need to revise your geography studies to find some of the countries: Malaysia, Philippines, Pakistan, Cameroon, Kenya, Uganda, South Africa. We are very grateful for the people like Janet Alungat and Resty Kinobe who are very involved and others who also take part as they organise for us the places to visit. Philip O’Halloran mhm
