THE HISTORY OF ST. EDMUND’S CHURCH SEJARAH GEREJA ST. EDMUND

Jesus once said to His disciples, “Go, then, to all the people everywhere and make them my disciples…. These words of Jesus must have inspired an Irish priest to come to a quiet little town known as Limbang. He came to Limbang in 1955 to start a school here. Limbang was small and very quiet then. There were very few people in town and the number of Catholic were very small, mostly government servants who served here and were from other divisions in Sarawak. To cater for the small numbers of Catholic, he started his chapel in his house. The house was situated at a place where Kedai Telekom (TM
Point) now stands. It was made of wood. However, the ground floor was concrete because it was used as a classroom. Four years later, a Dutch priest by the name of Rev. Fr. D. Wolvers was sent to Limbang at the beginning of 1959. However, he did not stay long here and left Limbang at the end of 1959. In 1958, a Priest House and three classrooms were built at mile one, Kubong Road. A room at the Priest House was used as a chapel (which is used as a library room now). As more and more students were being converted to Catholic the small chapel was always overcrowded especially on Sundays. As a result, a classroom was used for Sunday Masses. This temporary ‘church’ lasted until 1968. A new church building was built in early 1968 at a cost of RM80,000.00 The blessing on the opening of the new church was graced by His Lordship Bishop Anthony Galvin on 30th April 1968. Rev. Fr. J. Jackson the parish priest at that time, left Limbang to return to his home country a few months later. His replacement was Rev. Fr. J. Vaneman, the longest serving priest in Limbang. Rev. Fr. J. Vaneman came to Limbang in early 1960. Besides being a teacher at St. Edmund’s School, he did a lot of travelling at that time. Being young and active, he travelled to long houses as far as Medamit area. He was also the first priest to penetrate into the Bisaya Village to teach the Good News. After many years of hard labour and much travelling, many Iban and Bisaya folks were converted to Catholic. In 1961, a German priest was transferred to Limbang from Kanowit. He was quite well versed with the Iban language and customs. He was here for about a year. During his stay in Limbang he travelled mostly to the Iban areas especially to the longhouses in Kubong. 50th Aniversary Booklet

Another interesting perist who had served in Limbang was Rev. Fr. M. Gill. He came to Limbang in early 1968. He visited the Iban longhouses mostly in Kubong and Temburong. Temburong is a district under the Brunei Sultanate. During one of his visits to Temburong, Fr. M. Gill was detained by a Brunei policeman for illegal entry into the state. He was released the next day. Another priest who had converted a lot of Bisaya was Rev. Fr. Owen Grant. He came to Limbang in 1971 but left in 1974. Because of him many Bisayas from Kampung Bidang were converted to Catholic. By this time many Iban and Bisaya had become Catholic either by direct conversion or by the influence of their children who had become Catholics. The first local priest who had served in Limbang Parish was Rev. Fr. Philip Empalah, an Iban from Sebauh in Bintulu. He served in Limbang from 1977 to 1979. A Kenyah priest by the name of Rev. Fr. Peter Mering from Baram had served from 1983 to 1985. Both of these priests were quite active in evangelizing the Ibans and Bisayas through sharing the Good News and Life in the Spirit Seminar. In 1986 local priest such as Rev. Fr. S. Ding and Rev. Fr. Anthony Wan had also served in Limbang for a short time. As from 1987 until 1991 the parish was rather unfortunate. He did not have any resident priest to serve in Limbang. Occasionally, a priest from Miri or Bandar Sri Begawan came to say Masses on Sundays. Praise God, after having no priest for a long time in our parish, Rev. Fr. J. Vaneman returned to Limbang in early 1992 after serving in Miri for several years. The planning to build a new and bigger church had started way back
in 1985. Many activities were organized by the Church Building Committee to raise fund for the new Church. Finally, in 1996 it became a reality. The old Church was pulled down to make way for the new one. The cost of building Construction began in January 1996 and the new Church was expected to be completed eight months later. It was joy for everybody because the new church was ready to be used for Christmas 1996. Though it was raining on the night of Christmas Eve 1996, it did not stop church goers from attending the mass in the new Church for the first time. On the 27th April 1997, His Lordship Bishop Anthony Lee performed the solemn blessing for the new Church. Everybody felt happy and proud of the new Church. The Journey continues until today.
