LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
ADULT BEGINNERS
Greetings, everyone…and please join me in celebrating the launch of our new name, The Contemporary Austin! Since the November 2011 merger of our two legacy organizations, we have grown into a new and stronger organization. Working together with our Board of Trustees, our staff, and our design team from Pentagram, I’m happy to announce today that we are fully reinvigorated and thrilled to introduce you to The Contemporary Austin and our vision for the future of visual arts for our community. As part of our commitment to you, our members, it’s important for you to hear what’s coming your way in the near future. The Contemporary Austin will align our efforts on exhibiting contemporary art from acclaimed artists with local, national, and global reputations. You’ll see this approach reflected in our roster of artists who will be coming to Austin this fall, including the two oneperson exhibitions of new work by critically acclaimed artists Liam Gillick and Marianne Vitale. Both artists will be exhibiting their newly commissioned work at both the Jones Center and Laguna Gloria. We are fortunate in Austin to have two excellent locations to activate with art. Both sites, the gorgeous lakeside setting of Laguna Gloria and the Jones Center downtown, are ideal for these inspired, site-responsive projects. To that end, you’ll begin to see us spread our exhibiting artists across both locations. You may find a sculpture at Laguna Gloria that works in concert with a film at the Jones Center. Or perhaps a selection of photographs downtown that complement an installation at the water’s edge. It’s our mission to tie these two sites, as well as the Art School, together to create a cohesive and memorable experience for all to enjoy. Laguna Gloria, it goes without saying, is a true gem and we are so delighted that the artists we have invited are so enthusiastic and committed to proposing exciting new projects. Artists like Do Ho Suh, Orly Genger, Ursula Von Rydingsvard, Charles Long, and Tom Friedman—among many others—are working on some outstanding ideas for our program. The Contemporary Austin is committed to realizing the potential for this site, and will soon embark on a series of ventures designed to transform Laguna Gloria into an unprecedented art in nature experience through the use of all of the twelve acres. We have just completed an environmental assessment of the Laguna Gloria grounds and are embarking on being greater environmental stewards of this important land. Finally, I feel personally honored to have been welcomed so warmly to Austin and its vibrant creative community. I am dedicated to working hard on expanding our collaborations with our institutional partners in Austin, while engaging the community with our exhibitions, our diverse public programs and various educational opportunities. Be on the lookout for exciting news to follow in the coming months about how we’ll accomplish these goals. I thank and acknowledge your kind support and generosity. I look forward to seeing you at either (or hopefully both) of our locations very soon. Louis Grachos Ernest and Sarah Butler Executive Director OUR MISSION The Contemporary Austin reflects the spectrum of contemporary art through exhibitions, commissions, education, and the collection. OUR VISION The Contemporary Austin aspires to be the contemporary art museum for Austin and an essential part of city life. Through its unique combination of urban and outdoor sites, The Contemporary will embody an eclectic and collaborative spirit. 2

CERAMICS & SCULPTURE
VISITING CERAMIC ARTIST PROGRAM: KENSUKE YAMADA Sponsored by the Nowlin Family Foundation with contributions from Armadillo Clay & Supplies
The Art School is excited to host artist Kensuke Yamada for our fifth annual Visiting Ceramic Artist Program. In addition to demonstrating his hand building techniques, Kensuke will discuss how he translates the inspiration that comes from day-to-day life and personal experiences into figurative sculptures. “With clay I look for sculptural conversations that evoke the beauty, the subtleties, the sadness, and the humor of our everyday life. In viewing my sculpture, I hope for people to enjoy the moment, rather then the movement of time. I hope for my work to fill the space between two seemingly distant things, to provide a connection and thus create the story of you and me.”
Wheel Throwing & Beyond Kensuke Yamada is a Japanese-born artist, educated in the U.S. at Evergreen State College, Olympia, WA, and at the University of Montana, where he received his MFA in 2009. Since then, he has been a Resident Artist at the Archie Bray Foundation in Helena, MT; also at Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts, Watershed, ME; Oregon College of Arts and Crafts, Portland, OR; Clay Studio Philadelphia, Philadelphia, PA; and a guest artist at the Tyler School of Art, Temple University, Philadelphia, PA. Now he is a visiting artist, ceramics studio technician, and adjunct faculty member of The University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, AR. Yamada is a sculptor who creates layered narratives within his figurative works. Workshop: Oct 19–20 (Sat 9am–4pm/Sun 9am–12pm) $50 (members: $45) Lecture: Saturday, Oct 19, 5:30pm
