CHRISTMAS CUTIES

KACHINAS KICK IT

Mandan first graders are interviewed about Christmas and the holiday season.

An in depth look at the Mandan High Kachinas’ current competition season. Page 22.

Pages 12-13.

From The Editor...

As I sat down to write this little letter to you, the students, I realized that it would be the last message I will give to you in 2018. So here is what I have to say as you go forward into 2019. Be kind to each other. I know this is something that you have probably heard a million times, but I feel like it is often overlooked. You never really know what is going on with the people around you, and sometimes all it takes is a kind face or a small compliment to make all the difference in their lives at the time. Live in the moment. You will hear this from any senior you talk to, but high school flies by and the next thing you know you are going to be crossing the stage at graduation and all of this will be just a memory. Value your friendships. Good friends are hard to come by, and they are not worth giving up for a relationship or over a silly argument. There is my little talk for all of you, but honestly just go enjoy your life. You only get one shot, so love every second of it. OP out.

Crash Course: Essays

If you have ever taken an English class (which we all have), then you know how hard it is to live Spongebob’s struggle of writing the word “The” and not being able to come up with the right words. Living in a world that shows no mercy to those who cannot come up with the right words, this Bikini Bottom tragedy is real. These helpful grammar tips and basic essay format should be usable in anything you need to write. Here are some tips and tricks to help any student through their next English paper.

Basic short essay format:

MY TITLE WILL BE CREATIVE AND IT WILL RELATE TO THE TOPIC To start my essay I would think of something to grab the readers attention (this is something that English students hear on the daily, but it is so worth it). I would not want to start my essay with anything along the lines of “in this essay you will read about.... blah blah blah.” That is boring, and even if your topic is boring, your essay should never be. So instead I follow my clever opening with a thesis statement. A thesis is the central idea I will explore in my essay. So, if I was arguing that black water bottles were the best kind, I would say “black water bottles are the best to have because they are a versatile fashion accessory, they keep water colder and they are the easiest to carry.” Whether or not these things will be believed is up to the facts that I have to support them in my body paragraphs. My first body paragraph will touch on my first topic in my thesis. Following my first paragraph, my next one to three paragraphs will touch on the other topics in my thesis statement. Every paragraph written will be set up like this: 1General comment

1Specific support for the topic

-Why is that specific support important?

1To set off quoted words

Differences between commonly misused words: THAN: A method of comparison THEN: A point in time EFFECT: Result AFFECT: Influence TWO: The number 2 TOO: Also or excessively TO: Indicates motion THEIR: It belongs to them THEY’RE: They are THERE: A place WHETHER: Joins two words of

phrases; similar to the meaning of the word “if” WEATHER: Relating to climate IT’S: It is ITS: Possessive of “it” WE’RE: We are WERE: Past tense of “are” WHERE: A place

Extra tips to become a pro essay writer:

1Read like a writer 1Keep your main points down to two or three

1Second specific support

-Why is that important?

1Always use six plus sentences per

1Final thoughts

-Remind readers what was just said, and then tell them what is coming next in your second body paragraph I will then follow this format until my two to three body paragraphs are complete with a clever transition sentence at the end of each paragraph. To start my conclusion I will NEVER say “In conclusion...” The reader knows you are concluding so this form of conclusion is outdated, overused and completely destroys all of the work I have put into my essay. Instead, I will say something like “Looking back at all of my evidence...”, “Understanding the importance of this topic is very important because...” or reword my thesis sentence to wrap up my essay. The first sentence of the conclusion is then followed by a wrap up of the importance of what my reader has just read. I will also leave my reader with something to think about or a challenge of some sort. If you follow the basic rules of this essay format, with a splash of your own style and sass, I promise you will have an essay that is worth turning in. So I challenge you—for your next essay make it one that your teacher can put down in disbelief at how wonderful it was to read.

4. Beerbongs and Bentleys by Post Malone. This album offered hits like

“Rockstar”, “Psycho”, “Better now” and “Candy Paint”, it is no question that this album has the songs I have heard the most on the radio. These songs have been overplayed, but I think when they were not overplayed, they were not half bad.

Sneakers

4. Coming in last is the Nike/ 2. Runner up for sneaker of the year is OFFWHITE Presto. Whether it be the the Balenciaga “Triple S.” The only reason Blazer, Air Force One or the Presto, nowadays it seems like there is always an OFFWHITE shoe in the mix. These do not spike too much interest in me. Yes, they are a nice shoe and deserve a number four spot, but they do not do anything for me. Maybe it is because I have seen them so much. Overall, the Nike/OFFWHITE Presto has been hyped up since it came out and that is why it is in the number four spot.

4.

this was chosen for the number two spot was because of their tremendous hype. This sneaker was the absolute joke of the year for sneakerheads, but somehow got the most hyped up as well. These bad boys had not one, not two, but three soles on them, hence the name “Triple S”, with the S standing for sole. Personally, these were not for me, as I like to have a single sole shoe that does not cost me $600-$900 for resale price. Honestly, I do not get how these got so hype, either them being Balenciaga or them being so ugly that people thought they would get hyped up because of the joke probably.

smile of the face being a Nike swoosh. Even the small wave on the tongue of the shoe adds so much story and character.

Hype Scale

3. Number three for sneaker of the year is the Nike “React Element ‘87.” This

sneaker was a classic case of something ugly that got hype because people thought it was different. Take a look at the sole of these, they look like a rainforest frog’s fingertips. These are creative to say the least. From the transparent upper to the sole, the shoe screams creativity. I did not like these that much, but I can respect them for what they are.

1. Well deserved and praised, the 2018 sneaker of year is the Nike/Sean

Wortherspoon 1/97. This grail among grails is in the number one spot because of the truly ingenious detail that went into the sneaker. Combining the two best Air Max models, the ‘OG’ Air Max 1 and the Air Max 97, into one shoe, then adding corduroy, making it multi-colored and having the owner of the popular store, “Round Two”, design it...crazy. Wortherspoon even added a smiley face on the heel portion of the insole with the December 2018

The Real Piehl Poetry edition

OWEN PIEHL Editor-In-Chief

If you read this page, you know that I have been addressing serious topics the last two issues. I am kind of tired of always having a strong stance on something, and school has been stressful, so this issue I am going to dedicate this page to various styles of poems by me, (somewhat) relating to my favorite holiday, Christmas. I hope you enjoy them. To everyone reading: Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, Roll Braves.

Limericks Gifted Teachers

Got a gift for a teacher today Does not matter what I had to pay She teaches a class Which I barely pass So I hope that she gifts me an A

Gifted Students

MHS has no chimney, that’s cool Yet Santa comes, call me a fool? The great gift we receive Days before Christmas Eve Is a full 12 days without school

Free-Verse Freezing Thoughts “It feels like I’m being crushed And held, the brightness of day overwhelming even in my world of white The air rushes past, and I reflect on my short time on this earth My fall from the heavens The cold which enveloped me, freezing to my core This moment It all seems so simple, I think to myself I wonder where I am headed now I hope it’s somewhere ni-” *splat* A boy blocks the snowball and the fight continues

Shakespiehlian Sonnets Roll Braves

Let me tell you of a school I attend Now that I’ve seen it for years upon years And listen closely to me now, my friend As I write poems for my peers upon peers Phones out of the class, here’s iPads for all Now this assignment can be due at night Signs hanging up, don’t be dumb in the stall Or the SRO will give you a fright We have cowboys, rappers, all kinds of kids Different cars in the parking lots yonder Walking through the hallway, take off your lids Don thinking caps, there’s issues to ponder But while you work and feel like you’re a slave Always remember — be proud to be Brave

Santa’s on Vacation

Santa awoke in the morning with cheer And proceeded to make himself jolly He checked his calendar, “Christmas is here?” He wasn’t ready, by his own folly He hustled, bustled and ran to the barn To find Rudolph passed out with the others And the elves had not yet spun all the yarn To make coats for the sisters and brothers So Santa himself was left with a choice Either skip Christmas or put it on hold So he yelled and yelled ‘till he lost his voice “This Christmas and next, I’ll stay at the pole!” So the question, “Is Santa real? Is he?” He is real, he’s just always so busy

Real Piehl Christmas ‘Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the school Not a sound could be heard, not even a Juul The students were home or all out for the night And Mandan was silent and covered in white But alas, what noise? now screams through the air Through the parking lot yonder, a drifting car tears They should leave and rejoice, for Christmas has come Appreciate time to relax and be dumb Be happy that school is put off for awhile Put on a coat, and maybe a smile Is it wrong to be happy, when school’s not required? When kids can sleep in when they’re groggy and tired Or should homework be first? And the rest of it next? And should life and our happiness rest upon tests? Must we study semesters which fill us with dread Or can visions of sugarplums put us to bed? It is easy to stress, it is easy to cry It is easier still to actually try But enough of the school, I am tired of waking Up early and walking outside to be shaking It’s cold and it’s dark and I’m sick of it all It’s only six p.m. yet night starts to fall North Dakota, my muse, how you change in your seasons Why do I miss summer? A million reasons It’s happy and nice, I can feel both my hands All this frozen water can’t mess up my plans But for now I am happy, for now we have joys With family and food and unwrapping our toys Christmas has come, and for now life is bright And I promise that everything will be alright Banana graphic by Shantel Jangula.

They are all pretty simple to make, besides the cutouts, as they are a pain to roll out and frost. I would highly recommend baking these cookies and having a fun time with friends or family making them.

Some think the school should be looking further into this epidemic. “I think we need police going through the parking lot,” math teacher Melissa Olson said. “I don’t think we are talking to kids about how truly awful it is for you. There needs to be education.” Although some students avoid JUUL usage, some school faculty have noticed an increase in younger students abusing the device. “Since last year JUULing is going up because now we are getting to some of these lower grades that are middle schoolers that have been doing it more and more,” Breid said. Since last year, the amount of students JUULing in class has gone up as well. “I see [JUULing in class] as an issue because they are more drawn to that than learning about the actual school work,” Watkins said. According to school policy, any high schooler that gets caught with a JUUL in class should get reported to the office, and those who are reported do not get a light punishment. “The kid will get two days of in school suspension,” Breid said. “State wise it is a twenty five dollar citation and it is a state citation that will stay on your record forever.” Some students would see a permanent mark on their record as bad. And when students all around campus are taking that risk, it can get just as dangerous as a JUUL. “This is what someone told me… it’s not the matter of if you get caught, it’s when you get caught,” Breid said. *Names have been changed to protect students privacy.

provided by students. “The costumes look amazing, especially the big octopus one of Ursala,” said Musical Director Keri Hess-Bolte. The costumes are not the only interesting visuals in the musical. The set design is being handled by Austin Geltel and senior Amber Daniel. “This year is the first year we have had to build the set offstage and bring it in,’ Hess said. There are many reasons to see the musical this year, but the most important one may be to support the students who are participating. This year, “The Little Mermaid” is more than the story of a mermaid wishing for her legs, rejecting her father and learning to be content with herself, it is also the story of teenagers learning lines, building sets and working stage lights. On January 17-20 “The Little Mermaid” is being performed as the MHS musical. Playing the musical’s lead character Ariel is Sophomore Karley Cermak. “I have really liked theatre and Broadway, and I love performing, so I thought why not put them together and try something I really loved,” Cermak said when asked why she tried out for the musical. First, the wonderful smell of pine is so nice and really brings out the mood for Christmas. Second, one of the best family traditions is actually going to choose what tree to cut down and put up in our home. Besides the smell and fun of picking out the tree, I just overall enjoy natural rather than manmade. I guarantee waste from factories is produced when making fake trees. So, I think it’s clear to see that I would always choose a real tree over a fake tree.

Yay! Real Christmas tree all the way. I moved here from Washington state, and we always had a real Christmas tree, every year as the holidays roll around, we go out as a family to a Christmas tree farm and chop down a real tree. Once we brought that tree home, the first thing you will notice is the distinct smell the pine trees give off, and it fills your house with a nice Christmas scent.

Are real Christmas trees better than fake trees? Harley Simonson Wendy Schultz

Fake trees are just so much less hassle, like you don’t have to worry about pine needles all over your living room or what to do with it once Christmas is over. Fake trees are one of the few things in life where it’s buy once and done scenarios, unlike with a real tree where you have to buy one every year, fake trees are so simple to put together and to take apart. I mean a real tree isn’t the same as a tree that you’ve had since you were a kid and seeing it get put up again and again every year, it’s a feeling that a real tree just doesn’t have, memories from years prior of what you found under that same tree. It’s just something a real tree will never be able to replicate.

Freshman I think why we should use fake trees instead of real is because it kills tons of trees that we use for oxygen. It kills a lot of animal habitats so they may die because they wouldn’t have a home. Every year you have to buy a new real tree which is a lot of money and a fake one you can use every year and they could even have Christmas lights on them already. Real trees have to be cared for by watering them and picking up pine needles. Just the cash you save from getting an artificial tree can get you more presents and food for your family for the holiday season.Real trees can be a fire hazard if not taken care of and can be hard to dispose of.
