Knoephla soup is the staple of any North Dakotan’s diet, so naturally it is served at every German restaurant. There are many options for the soup throughout Mandan, but not all of them taste like grandma’s recipe. So, to make it easier for any knoephla soup fan, I’ve listed the most important characteristics of the soup served at four popular German restaurants in Mandan to help you out.

Kroll’s sits towards the end of the Strip, if you’re coming from Main Street in Mandan. There are several options for takeout, and one of them is getting a big bucket of knoephla soup for $16.99. A regular bowl of soup costs $4.99, for which you get a good amount of soup. It also has a lot of dumplings, and they are pretty big, which covers up the thin consistency if that is what you’re looking for. The soup also has bright yellow color to it, and there is a sparse amount of onions and celery. The entire restaurant is modeled after a 50’s diner, and does a great job of making you feel like you’re in that time period.
Positioned towards the end of Main Street, close to Highway 10, Ohms is a great place for your after school cravings of knoephla soup. It is only $3.89 for a very large bowl of soup, and the consistency of the soup is quite watery. The knoephla are very slim and long, and the soup also has sweet potatoes in it. The taste of the soup is very different from any traditional knoephla soup recipe, so I definitely recommend trying it if you are a fan of sweet potatoes. The atmosphere of the restaurant is very relaxed, and kind of looks like an amped up school lunchroom.

FRIED’S
Located at just the top of the hill on Sunset, Fried’s Family Restaurant is the ideal place to go for lunch during school. They have a great takeout option, which includes a lot of soup for $3.50, the same amount they serve for when you dine in. There is also another option for a large bucket of soup that costs $18.25. It is about enough to feed one hungry person, or two mildly hungry people and also comes with a lot of cracker packets. The soup includes small and soft knoephla and it has the consistency of heavy cream, if that is what you’re into. The atmosphere of the restaurant is quite quaint and cute, and also includes a thrift shop.

The Rolling Hill’s Restaurant is located 10 minutes out of the city of Mandan, just off of I-94. It is open 24 hours, making it the perfect place for your midnight cravings of knoephla soup. You get a medium sized bowl of soup for $4.95, and there is also a take out option for the same amount and the same price. The consistency of the soup is somewhat thick, and the size of the knoephla are small and irregularly shaped. However, the shape of the knoephla is very irregular, and onions are spread sparsely throughout the soup. Savanna Hagerott- Cold Stone Creamery I’ve been working at Cold Stone Creamery for nine months, which means I have had a lot of time to experiment with different ice cream and mix-in combinations. As a person with a very big sweet tooth, my favorite creation comes with a cost. I chose the plain Cake Batter ice cream, which is very sweet, so however hungry you are, I recommend getting a Like It (small) size. Shantel Jangula- Loving Tan Self Tanning Mousse For a work Christmas party, I ordered a dress that blended right in with my skin tone. Knowing that I had to show up to the party none other than glamorous, I decided to order “Loving Tan.” With horror stories of spray tans turning my fellow peers orange and patchy, I went into the self tanning world petrified of what might come. Fortunately, after waiting six hours I was pleased with the results, as I was not orange or patchy. The “Loving Tan” self tanning mousse comes in three shades. Someone with fairer skin may want to start with the shade ‘Medium,’ and then gradually move to darker shades. With this product, I would personally recommend buying their Applicator Mitt to ensure the tan is easily applied.

Gabrielle Wolf- Dracula If you are interested in novels, I recommend the novel “Dracula,” by Bram Stoker. It was written in 1897 and is a Gothic horror novel. This novel is the basis of the Dracula movies, and is based on the Romanian, Vlad III Dracula (aka Vlad the Impaler). No woman thinks more highly than I do of the fashion, as well as the comfort of women’s pants. But different women often see the same subject in different lights; and, therefore, I hope it will not be thought disrespectful to those companies if I shall speak forth my sentiments freely and without reserve. This is no time for ceremony. The question of the size of pants pockets is one awful moment to this country. Should I keep back my opinions at such a time, through fear of giving offence, I should consider myself as guilty of treason towards my country. First and foremost, I should address how the absence or insufficiency of pockets in women’s pants is nothing less than a detriment to the security of women and to the safety of the country. For with the scarceness of pockets comes the presence of handbags and purses; and with the presence of such bags comes the wickedness of theft. Furthermore, the pocketless pants that make women so vulnerable often cost significantly more than men’s pants which are blessed with the privilege of sufficient pockets. Should the pockets of women’s pants not be able to hold the money that they cost? The case for pockets is so often forgotten and labeled as secondary to many of the various issues facing the United States today. But this is not a movement for convenience- this is a movement for safety, for security, and for equality. I have but one lamp by which my feet are guided; and that is the lamp of experience. I know of no way of judging of the future but by the past. And judging by the past, I wish to know what

They tell us that we are weak; unable to cope with so formidable an adversary. Scientist Vazrick Nazar said the yellow scales on the moth’s head remind him of the 45th president, Donald Trump. The moth is native to southern California and northern Mexico.

A Dutch zoo has created a new program to allow orangutans to look at pictures of other orangutans to get more information about how the primate selects potential mates. The biologist of Apehneul primate park, Thomas Bionda, hopes that this primate Tinder will help the zoo find the perfect mate for these impassioned orangutans.
Nude Microsoft campus jogger says he was building immunity to cold
Washington state police reported in a Facebook post that a female police officer picked up a nude jogger running on the Microsoft campus. The police officer said that she saw “nude buttocks illuminated by a street light.” Because of the frigid weather she took him into her vehicle. He said the reason for his action was to build his immunity to the cold. The jogger was not charged due to not causing a public disruption; however, he was advised to not do it again.
Florida woman gets OK to keep Rambo, her clothes-wearing gator A celebrity alligator in Lakeland, FL was given approval to stay with his owner, Mary Thorn. The gator is famous for wearing clothes and going to parties as entertainment. The gator grew big enough that the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation became worried that he didn’t have enough room in Thorn’s house. The news of Rambo being taken away from Thorn quickly spread and petitions appeared in support of Thorn, and in the end Rambo was able to stay with his owner.

With Officer Anderson being promoted to a new position, Mandan High School opened their job search for a new school resource officer for the 2016-17 school year. The MHS Courier had the opportunity to meet Officer David Tomlinson, better known as Officer Tommy. Below is a series of questions and answers from their meeting. Just getting to meet the staff and the students, it’s a wide array of different people that is really exciting. What do you do in your spare time? I really enjoy sports playing and watching: football, soccer, baseball, and hockey.

What would you like to state to the student body? Make good choices and put 100 percent into everything you do. Why did you decide to become a police officer? When I was going through high school, I wasn’t quite sure how to become an officer, so I did the next best thing and joined the U.S. Army. I was in the reserves for about seven years, and it was a good time. I got to see the world and meet awesome people. If I could repeat anything in my life again, I would definitely go back to that. What is one thing you would redo in your life? I would have asserted myself more in school. If I would’ve known how important is was, all the scholarships and grants and admissions, I definitely would’ve spent more time hitting the books. There are a lot more opportunities that happen when you assert yourself, and I wish I would have known that back then.

The Second Annual Memorial Skate for Rider Cupido will be hosted by his family on Sunday, February 26 at the All Seasons Arena. The Open Skate is an effort to raise funding for the coach’s room at the newly built Starion Sports Complex, which will be named after Rider. The event is free to attend, and a bake sale will help fund the effort to name the coaches’ room. T-shirts will be available for $15, and window decals will sell for $2. “We started it last year because we wanted something that brought everyone together to remember Rider,” said Rider’s sister, Kennedy Cupido. Rider Cupido, a Mandan High School graduate, passed away on August 1 2015 as a result of a motor vehicle Rider and his sister, Kennedy, at Prom 2014. accident. Throughout his life, Rider

How to spot fake news for DUMMIES
+Quotes
News articles should contain many quotes from educated people. These people will also provide “both sides of the story” to create an unbiased article (i.e. a democrat and a republican; pro-life and pro-choice). If an article contains few or no quotes or it discusses only one side of the story, it is likely fake.
+Images
If you are reading an article on a computer, reverse search the images in the article. To do this, right click on the image and choose to search Google. If the image is found on many articles from different dates or discussing different topics, it is likely invalid for the article you are reading.
+Extremes
Honestly, news is pretty boring. So, if you read an article that is making you really angry or is exactly what you think or believe, its probably not news. News should provide information that is useful, but frankly, it should be pretty anticlimactic.
+Time
News is, as the name suggest, new. If the article was published a while ago or if the information is about a past event, it is probably not news. For example, if you read an article that talked about old information regarding Hillary Clinton’s private email, its probably not news. However, if the article discussed new information in Clinton’s emails, it would be news because it is discussing new information.
+Spelling/Grammar
In the world of news, an article must go through many people before it is actually published. Therefore, if it contains blatant spelling or grammar errors, it is likely not news because if it was read by more than one person before being published, these errors would have likely been fixed. The article would most likely have been written by somebody hoping to persuade you to feel a certain way based off of what you believe is news.
+Domain name
Okay, this is where things get tricky. When browsing online, its very common to see similar domain names amongst websites. Official news websites generally have a pretty simple domain name. For example, the official CNN website’s URL is www.cnn.com so if you are reading an article from www.cnn.co.com, it is most likely fake. If you are unsure if an article is legit, check the domain name and make sure you are on a real news site.
+Know your sources
At the end of the day, it’s never a bad thing to know some reliable sources and some not-so-reliable sources. Good news sources include: The Wall Street Journal, CBS News, Bloomberg, ABC News, and USA TODAY. Bad or biased news sources include: Buzzfeed, NowThis, Occupy Democrats, and Fox News.

The plane made its usual bark as it bellowed to life, spewing a small puff of black smoke from the exhaust. Benjamin started his run-up and called up the CTAF to report his ATIS information. He never really listened to it, he simply adjusted the altimeter by pressure elevation and then got the information code. This never served him wrong. “Drekken traffic, Griffin November 1-3- 0-7 Echo Mike, taking off on runway 2-1, for right traffic to the west, Drekken traffic.” The one hundred and eighty horsepower engine whined as it made its ever common struggle to pull the plane into the air. It did exactly what it was made for. “Drekken traffic, Griffin 0-7 Echo Mike, climbing to 4500 feet on west traffic, Drekken traffic.” He switched his ADF to his favorite country station. He was now ready for the flight. The haze dropped below him, covering only the horizon from ten miles beyond. He scanned diligently, watching for birds, land marks, and other planes. There was a flock of birds passing down and to the right of him about 200 feet, so he kept rather fixed on them for a few moments. They were unpredictable and couldn’t be relied upon to report their position or any changes in course. His concentration, however, was suddenly and rudely broken by another plane, a two engine, which buzzed passed from the left and about 100 feet above. No radio contact, no warning. Benjamin pulled power and nosed down to avoid a collision, as it zoomed past, at a much more comfortable 300 feet, oblivious to him. Slightly shaken, but undaunted, he climbed back to his regular altitude and resumed his flight. The plane just moaned along at its normal lazy pace. He would zone out sometimes, just to come back and look at his instruments and ensure he was on course. Winds were almost nonexistent that day, but the haze got thicker. He would imagine himself as some duty driven bomber pilot on a long mission. Or as a rugged old bush flier. Being an aviator always brought a bit of a childish streak out in anyone, whether they were conscious of it or not. Most of the time it’s why they did it at all.
Feature 21 He switched his radio frequency as he passed over a small airport. “Curry traffic, Griffin 1-3- 0-7 Echo Mike, passing over the airspace, 4500 feet heading west, five miles, Curry traffic.” No one responded to him directly but there was a little bit of chatter. A crop duster and a small Cessna pilot were small talking over the CTAF; “Hey Bob, I heard your son just shipped to boot camp, is that true?” the duster said. “Roger, that is correct, gonna have another Marine in the family. *static*.” “It’s been a few decades since that happened, Bob. Was in 1979 for you?” “Uh, 77.” “Yeah, it was 1972 for me. Have a good flight, beautiful weather.” “How’s the spraying going over there, Gary?” “Oh, a little choppy down low, just good to have GPS with this smoke.” “Oh yeah, that’s for sure.” “Where you headed to?” “Kendrikson, gotta a family reunion.” “Oh, well you take care, Bob. Fly safe.” Gary said before silence settled on the radio again, broken by some brief static. After that it was silence, the smog closing in further, with almost same choking feeling on the ground in Drekken. Still able to see a distance, but a little opaquely. Except he was at four thousand five hundred feet. He called the Maxelton CTAF and reported his intentions to land. As he was coming in for a landing, the runway was hard to see, he was not able to determine which runway he was on since he had forgotten to adjust his heading indicator. He was relying on his own heading and this meant he have to overfly the field. He followed the PAPI lights in on final and brought the plane to a rest. The sun was red, and the haze turned to whiffs of smoke as the fire, which was about 700 miles away was blowing over the entire continent. He shut down his engine, which stopped with a bit of click from the propeller. He opened the cabin door. “Pretty smoky out here, huh?” He said to the line attended with a bit of smile. “Yeah, we can barely breathe around here. You need fuel?” he said, obviously trying to minimize conversation. “I should be fine, I didn’t go far and I am only going back anyway.” Benjamin said, as he closed the door. He passed the day waiting for his girlfriend to get off work so he could give her a gift. He had in a small box with a bouquet of flowers on it. He sat in the FBO lounge sipping on a Styrofoam cup of coffee. The TV was running the usual, some sensational news story on a twenty-four hour cycle. Pilots are the often worldly type, some even border on conspiracy theorist or paranoid types as well. Their most endearing trait, and making them hard to understand for outsiders. She finally arrived, with her normal annoyed expression, when he presented the flowers she softened and began smiling. “You flew all the way here to give me those flowers?” She said with amusement, but clearly grateful as well. “Of course I would!” he said “I’d fly anywhere for you, Clarissa!” “Although, driving is fine too.” She said shaking her head and smiling. “But that just isn’t the same.” “Alright, well let’s get some dinner before you have to go.” They walked out to her car. “The haze is thick out here.” Benjamin said as they got into the car. “Yes, sometimes you can barely breathe.” “That’s what that line guy was saying.” They chatted about work, family, and plans as they drove to a local diner. There they continued to talk about the same subjects, never really going anywhere. And once again, they turned to arguments about flying. “I get sick every time you go up in that plane.” She said. “Well it’s good you’ve never gone up in it with me if you’re getting sick on the ground watch.” He said chuckling, really proud of how clever he was. “See, there you go dismissing what I have to say about it. I’m not asking you to give up your whole life. I’m sure there are hobbies that cost less, are less dangerous, and are just as fun.” “Just as fun? You already got me to give up hunting—“ “Hunting is barbaric—“she sat up taller. “I sold all but one of my guns—“ “Still sort of wish you’d sell that one too—“as she looked down a little to the side. “I gave up race car driving for you—“ “Can you do anything that doesn’t include shoot, crashing, or zooming through the sky?” she looked him in the eyes perplexed. “I was a volunteer firefighter, you made to quit that.” “Again, the whole flames thing…” the lifted her hands as she shrugged her shoulders. “So I guess I could take up shuffleboard and bingo. Maybe use the extra money to start up a good coke habit.” He said smirking. “Always turning it into a joke! Do you even think about, I don’t know, marriage, maybe?” “Yes, in fact when I’m flying I think about a lot of things.” Story continued in April issue

This increase in food portions is sometimes so unnoticeable that when a person orders food at a restaurant, they just sit there eating for over an hour because they do not want to waste the heap of fries that they got with their burger. As time goes on, many Americans have experienced or seen the consequences of excessive weight gain due to the added calories in the diet. Our increase in food portions is a factor in the obesity epidemic within the United States.
ANTICIPATE THE PORTION Even though we may not always be able to identify the growing portion sizes, there are things we can do to combat the urge to eat the large portions of food. Here is a list of ways to stay healthy when dealing with portion sizes:

Many people look to a new year with wonder about what is to come and hope for a better year. However, many also take the new year to look back and reflect on the past. The Mandan Courier has once again gone through its archives to find some of the best pictures and articles from Mandan’s past 90 years. From Mandan’s sports to its students, these articles can give an insight into North Dakota before reality TV, Instagram, or Starbucks. The issues pulled for this month showcase the 1921 boys’ basketball team, the 1967 wrestling championship, as well as a look at a 1937 freshman. All the pictures shown are from the Courier staff archives. The Mandan Courier is one of the longest running student newspapers in North Dakota and thus has a wealth of material to pull from. The possibility of more articles like these is always feasible.
A lot has changed in basketball over the years, but it was almost unrecognizable in 1921. This photo shows the 1921 Mandan Warriors boys’ basketball team. A game uniform in the early days of the sport included: leather knee pads, wool socks, wool jerseys, and a belt to keep the shorts up during plays.

- If you do well on the ACT, many colleges offer significant scholarships depending on your score. Though it varies heavily from school to school, these scholarships can range from small grants to full rides.

An interview with someone in the medical field is one of the many fun projects of Human Anatomy and Physiology. This class is filled full of fun projects such Design by DocLuigi. as dissecting a cow eyeball, pig heart, and a white rat. Poke discrimination, electrocardiograms, and blood typing are all labs to be expected in Human Anatomy and Physiology. Don't forget along with human anatomy, there comes physiology. Boys’ Hockey
The Mandan boys’ hockey team had an overall record of seven wins and 13 losses by the beginning of February. This put the Braves in the number six spot for the WDA. They have their work cut out for them as the prepare for upcoming events. “We've been without our captain and three-year letter-winner Ty Leingang. He has missed the past five games due to injury, ” Head Coach Matt Mullally said. “We should see our defensive play greatly improve with him back.” Yet, even with these setbacks, the team is still hopeful to finish in fifth place in our region.
Boys’ Basketball Boys’ Swim and As of the beginning of February, the Dive Mandan boys’ basketball team was sitting in the middle of the WDA. After week nine, the Braves sat at sixth place in the WDA with a record of 6-7 in the west conference. Leading the Braves as of January 31 was junior Trae Steckler with the most points, rebounds, and blocks. Seniors Jaden Andresen and Landon Kleingartner led the Braves in steals and assists, respectively. As the WDA tournament approaches, all eyes will be on Head Coach Brandon Schafer and his team of Braves to see if they can work their way into the State Tournament in early March.

The Mandan boys’ swim and dive Team is turning out to have a very good year, placing 3rd in all but one of their six invitationals. They hold four wins to three losses in Duels. At the time of writing, the Braves were gearing up for WDA and State, with eight swimmers and three divers qualified, out of a team of 27. Senior Reed Bergman and sophomore TJ Reinhart have both qualified in all 8 of the swimming events. The team also sports two All State divers with sophomore Johnny Mindt making first team All State in diving, and Bergman making second team All State in diving. Other top swimmers and divers for the Braves’ Head Coach Ralph Manley include: senior Luke Peterson, and juniors Joey Clark and David Hoffman. The team is in a perfect spot to replicate or improve on last year’s WDA finish.
Girls’ Hockey
North Dakota girls’ hockey can often be one of the toughest sports for Mandan to compete. The combination team of Bismarck, Fargo, and Grand Forks can often dominate the roster; however, despite these facts, the Mandan Braves have settled into the middle of the state. As of the beginning of February, the girls stood at the number seven spot out of 12 teams in the running. The Braves held a North Dakota league record of 8-8, with overall play standing at 11 wins, 8 loses, and 1 tie. When it comes to team leaders and their numbers, Senior Maiah McCowan led the team in all three areas of goals, assists, and points. By early February, McCowan had racked up a total of 21 points. Sophomore Lucy Morgan has also stepped up in the goalie net with three total shutouts and a 94 percent save rate. A victory over Jamestown put the Braves in the running for the State Tournament in Fargo.

Mayson had a great month of November for the Braves!! The Team only had two meets in November, WDA and the State Championships in Bismarck. At WDA on November 5th she started the meet off swimming her best 50 Breaststroke split (29.87) in the 200 Medley Relay helping the Team to a 2nd place finish. The State Championships were just as exciting helping her 200 medley relay to a 3rd place finish with a time of 1:54.09 a second faster than their WDA time of 1:55.22. In her 200 yard individual medley event she swam to a 5th place finish. Dropping her time another 2 tenth of a second. The 200 Freestyle Relay was an amazing race with all 4 girls swimming best splits finishing 5th with a time of 1:43.85, a 2 second drop from their WDA time of 1:45.85. She finished the Championships strong in her best event the 100 Breaststroke. She swam a 1:06.88 which placed in second place a 1 ½ second time drop from WDA. WOW!!! The time placed her 2nd Team North Dakota All-State. At the team banquet when I gave her our Team MVP Honor, I said with her positive attitude and goal setting mentality the sky will be the limit for this young lady!!! Beulah and Dickinson, and two assists. His 11 points is tops on the team. Alex is an honest player, working hard on both ends of the ice. In addition to scoring, he is a key contributor in other areas; winning faceoffs, blocking/deflecting shots and playing on special teams. He’s also a supportive and helpful teammate. His hard work and dedication is why he’s off to a such a great start.

Senior Reed Bergman

They are the #1 What advice can you give to other athletes at the school? Give it your all because time flies and positivity can play a big role in your game. If you could arm wrestle any teammate, who would you? Why? I would arm wrestle my brother because I know I can beat him. What song best describes your sport? “No sleep” by Wiz Khalifa Coach’s response: Reed’s month of December was a great start to the boys’ swimming and diving Trae was voted a team captain by his teammates. We were 3-4 in these games and Trae has been a big inside presence for us, making a great 1-2 punch with his brother Camren. Trae is second in the conference in scoring and is our team’s leading scorer and rebounder, averaging 19.6 points and eight rebounds per game, including 17 offensive rebounds (2.4 per game). Trae has a great field goal percentage, shooting 57.7 percent from the floor. He was 24 for 34 from the free throw line during those games for 71 percent. Trae comes to practice, weights, and film every day, striving to get better for himself and our team. We are a better team because of the hard work and leadership qualities he shows every day.”

season. There were four competitions in the month, with Reed leading the way. During the BHS /LHS/ Fargo South multi dual (three dual meets), Reed took six 1stplace finishes in his individual events: 200 Individual Medley and 100 Backstroke. Reed and his relay teammates took 1st in all the meets in the 200 Medley Relay and 400 Freestyle Relay, giving Reed another six 1st-place finishes. Reed is State Qualified in seven of the eight individual swimming events – with only the 500 Freestyle left to swim. Not a bad month! Mandan was 3-1 in Duals and had a 3rd-place team finish in both Invites. And for Reed: 14 1st places, four 2nd places, and four 3rd places. Wow! What a great way to start your season for your team and for yourself!”
Junior Trae Steckler
Boys’ Basketball Coach’s response: “Megan Zander had a very impressive start to the girls’ basketball season during the month of December. Over our seven games, she was very consistent on the offensive side of the ball, averaging 17.1 points and 1.7 assists per game. What made her such a strong part of our team was her ability to play both sides of the ball, averaging 2.4 blocked shots and 3.7 steals per game. We always ask our players to “play their role” on our team, whatever that role may be, and one of Megan’s most important roles on this team that helps us to be successful is her rebounding. She is very dependable, and is a huge contributor to the success of our team.”
