Jodi Norgaard is founder of the Dream Big Toy Company™, which created go! go! Let’s begin by letting readers know where you attended college, and where your company is currently based. I attended Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana, and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in psychology. Dream Big Toy Company™ is based in Glen Ellyn, Illinois.
Is being an entrepreneur something you always dreamed of doing? Yes and no. When I was in high school I always thought it would be great to own my own clothing store or shoe store. When I was in college, my focus changed and I wanted to work for a larger company.
A lot of entrepreneurs have sayings or mantras they live by, what is your mantra? When I first started my business six years ago, my mantra was ‘Don’t let fear stop you.’ Now my mantra is ‘Change is never made by mainstream ideas.’
What did you do prior to founding the Dream Big Toy Company? After graduating from IU, I worked for RitzCarlton Hotels in Chicago as a sales manager for about four years. I left Ritz to start my first business called Basket Expressions, a gift basket business. I had a unique niche and worked with a lot of women in the Chicago area who baked homemade candies, cookies, breads, and these amazing brownies called “blobbs”. Oprah became one of my biggest clients! After about 8 MIABELLA • Aug/Sep 2013
nine years, and three children later, I sold the business to stay home with the kids. I always knew I would start another business, but I didn’t know what it would be. I kept a journal next to my bed and wrote down everything and anything that came to me. Six years later, the right business hit me…Dream Big Toy Company™.
What is the premise behind your product line, Go! Go! Sports Girls™ dolls? When my daughter was nine, we were in a toy store looking for a doll to purchase. Many of the dolls I saw were dressed in short skirts, cropped tops, bellybutton rings, and had a lot of makeup. One doll was even named “Lovely Lola”! I looked at these dolls and then my little girl, dressed in her soccer clothes, and I thought there is no way I would ever purchase one of these dolls for her. So I decided to do something about it and design a line of positive-imaged, age-appropriate dolls that would not encourage an older or overly-mature image. The Go! Go! Sports Girls™ were born! The plush, sports-themed dolls are designed as a fun and educational way to promote selfappreciation and the benefits of daily exercise, healthy eating and sleeping habits, self-esteem, and overall healthy life skills for girls. It took two years from rough draft to the launch of the first doll, Tennis Girl, at the 2008 U.S. Open.
What financial hurdles, if any, did you face in the beginning of owning your own business? To start a business, you need capital. I borrowed this from our personal savings. My husband and I viewed it as an investment.
What are the challenges you faced being an entrepreneur, and how were they overcome?
What are your future goals for the Dream Big Toy Company™?
There are many challenges when starting a new business. This is where the ‘Don’t let fear stop you’ mantra came in handy! In the beginning, putting together a marketing plan was helpful. This kept my thoughts in order. Once the dolls were launched, the challenge of getting them on store shelves was next. This was difficult due to a tough economic time. Retailers did not want to take on the risk of purchasing a new product, a product with no history. I had to find a route that would allow me to sell the dolls, and I did…through online stores. This proved to be a good way to explain the positive message of the dolls. Soon after that, smaller retail stores started purchasing the dolls and now I am working with Wal-Mart.
There are two big future goals! First, I am launching a series of books to go along with six of the Go! Go! Sports Girls™ for my new product called “Read & Play”. I have been working with a very talented author, editor, and illustrator to create fun and educational books. The “Read & Plays” will be launched in selected Wal-Mart stores in February 2014. Second, I am a founding member of an alliance called “Brave Girls Want” (www.bravegirlswant.com). Our goal is to ask media content creators and large corporation and retailers to make a commitment to support girls’ empowerment.
What would you suggest are some of the key elements needed prior to launching your own business? Research is key. How is your product or service going to solve a problem? What sets you apart from others? Patience and perseverance is also needed. It takes time to build a business and relationships. It never happens overnight.
If a young woman wanted to start her own business, what advice would you have for her? Ask questions! If you don’t know how to do something, find someone who does. Overall, people are willing to help. Be kind, be honest, and work hard. It will take you far in life.

TOP STUDEN TS
Lots of students spend an inordinate amount of time studying for their first final, only to realize when it’s over that they’ve barely started reviewing for the rest of their classes. To avoid this situation, study for all of your finals a little each day.
Eat lots of brain food. Your brain works overtime during finals, so make sure you feed it right! Foods such as salmon, blueberries, leafy greens, and legumes are good for both your body and your mind.
Control your physica environ l when y ment study. ou Research shows that plants, natural light, and moderately cool temperature can improve concentration. People also retain more information when they switch up where they study rather than spend all their time in one place, so don’t lock yourself in your room or live in the library.
Your brain proce sses information while and absorbs so make sure yo you sleep, u get a night for optim 7–9 hours al grades.

from gi to you
On to the issue! I am always very proud of the final product, and this issue is no exception. I had the pleasure of interviewing our fabulous covergirl, DEBBY RYAN, who is as funny, mature, and endearing as I had hoped. She embodies everything our magazine represents and then some. Make sure to check out her beautiful editorial on pg 52 then let us know what you think!
In friendship, in school, in life—your success depends on you. Don’t be afraid to reach higher. If you want to achieve 100%, then give 110. I can go on for pages about the mistakes I’ve made (and continue to make) both professionally and personally, but without them I would not be the person I am today. Life is much less stressful if you live by the idea that no action can be considered a failed effort if a valuable lesson is learned. So for those mistakes, I am grateful.
{
I would really like to send a huge thank you to Angela Evans and Kennesaw University for sponsoring this issue. Please take a moment, if you are contemplating college, to browse their website and give their campus consideration. Advertising has been the biggest challenge for us, so the fact that they supported not only this issue but the idea of Miabella really speaks volumes about the philosophies and integrity of their university. So again...thank you, Angela, and thank you, kennesaw!
But, as always, this issue is about yOU. Because this is the back-to-school edition of Miabella, we have sprinkled throughout great tips, advice, and lots of ideas to help you make the best of this upcoming school year. I think everyone can benefit from The Secrets of Top Students (previous pg) by Stefanie Weisman, who achieved the highest gPA in her graduating class from Columbia, and our tips to getting that college scholarship (pg 39).
{
As some of you may know, this issue marks the fifth issue and Miabella’s oneyear birthday! I am extremely proud of the progress we have made, all the words of encouragement received, and the time and energy that all of our talented photographers, stylists and writers have sacrificed to, once again, breathe life into what started out as a whimsical discussion in my dining room in San Diego.
With each issue we make every effort to showcase young talent that not only have stellar personalities but are also down-toearth. Our girl to Watch, CLAUDIA LEE (pg 14), and Big Time Rush’s dreamy LOGAN HENDERSON (pg 80) are no exception to that rule.
Some things will never change. At Miabella, we strongly advocate being Anti-Drugs • Anti-Bullying • Anti-Fur
So, it is 10:30 in the evening. Probably not the best time to be writing my note to you as I do get rather punchy and off-the-wall as the night progresses. I’ll do my best to keep it professional.
Have a great school year! Remember to always dream big and have fun!

Actress Claudia Lee, who plays Southern firecracker Magnolia Breeland on the CW’s Hart of Dixie, is a girl whose career has taken flight this past year—snagging roles in both the Kick-Ass sequel and the hilarious new FOX series, Surviving Jack (based on the best-selling book, I Suck at Girls, by Justin Halpern)—all the while managing to keep her feet firmly planted on the ground. With a maturity level of someone twice her age, this 17-year-old newcomer is taking it all in stride, “I realize the hard work it took to be where I am today, and I know that it can all go away in a second.” It is quite obvious when speaking with this sweet and sassy Indiana native that she has very defined values and goals for herself, and that these were no doubt born from her close bond with her family and friends. We sat down with Claudia to find out more about her past, present, and her undeniably exciting future.
ON FILM & TV Your character on Hart of Dixie, Magnolia Breeland, is sort of ummm…mischievous. How much fun is it playing her? I love working on Hart of Dixie because get to work with such talented and amazing people. Playing Magnolia is such a blast because I’m nothing like her in real life. She definitely pushes the limits much more than I do. Especially when she sneaks out to attend crazy parties! If you could give Magnolia any kind of advice, what would it be? To breathe and count to 10! She is always the one to blow everything out of proportion, and that is definitely the aspect

that makes her so funny. She is very impulsive and makes decisions based on her feelings or the manner in which Lemon (played by actress Jaime King) talks to her. I would advise her to think things out and not be the first to handle the situation. What is your favorite part of working on the show? Working with such a talented cast! Everyone is always prepared and ready to dive right into the material and that is really inspiring. I also love how close I’ve become with the whole cast. They’re like a second family to me and going to ‘work’ is something I look forward to every day! We are really excited for Surviving Jack (which premieres in January)! We watched the trailers and almost peed ourselves. You play Chris Meloni’s (Law & Order: SVU) daughter on the show. Tell us about your character, Rachel. I’m so glad that all of you at Miabella responded so well to the trailers! I have to pinch myself because I’m so blessed to be working on such an amazing project like Surviving Jack. There is just such a positive energy that surrounds the whole project that makes me so anxious to begin production! Rachel Dunlevy is the girl who has done everything right. She strives in school, makes all of the right choices, and listens to her parents. That all changes once she is no longer under the watchful eye of her mother, and her father is taking on the role of being in charge. Rachel takes advantage of her father’s lack of comprehension to the ‘teenage girl mind’ and explores what it’s like to push the limits. With Hart of Dixie, Surviving Jack, and the upcoming premiere of Kick-Ass 2, you are a very busy girl! Are there any roles that you really wanted and didn’t get? Personally, I believe that everything in life happens for a reason. If it is meant to be, then it will be. I don’t look back and think ‘Why didn’t I get that?’ or ‘What did I do wrong?’ I enjoy having a positive outlook on my career and everything that takes place. There is a lot of negativity in this industry and I believe that it only creates a negative outcome. Let’s talk about Kick-Ass 2 for a moment. You’re making your big-screen debut as Brooke in the highlyanticipated sequel, which is out this August. Tell us a little bit about your role, and what other projects are coming up for you—though you are already crazy busy! I’m SO excited for Kick-Ass 2 to premiere! It’s been close to a year since we began production and the anticipation has truly tested

my patience. I can’t wait for everyone to see the relationship between Brooke and Mindy, aka Hit Girl! Their relationship is chilling and keeps you on the edge of your seats! As far as other projects, right now I’m focusing on [the film] and Surviving Jack— but there are definitely things that you should keep a look out for!
ON MUSIC Fans may or may not know you are also a singer. Where do you get your inspiration for songwriting? I believe that you can get inspiration from anything. That’s what I love about songwriting. It’s so innocent and real that a song could be created while watching a film or talking to a friend. I love listening to Patti Smith and Bob Dylan. Their work inspires me to push myself and to write what I feel. I also enjoy listening to Lana Del Rey. Her work is like poetry and cinematic scores mixed together. I often catch myself listening in pure amazement to the simple beauty that intertwines her lyrics and melody. I love your song, Hollywood Sunset. It’s more optimistic than most love songs nowadays. Do you consider yourself a hopeless romantic? Thank you! I do not consider myself a hopeless romantic. When I fall for a guy, I go into the relationship wholeheartedly. I don’t believe in daydreaming about my Prince Charming, I want to find him! Do you have any dating advice for our readers? I believe that the most important dating advice I could share is to respect yourself. It’s much more admirable to be the girl who is classy and knows what she wants, rather than feel like you have to change for someone. I also would share that when you’re young you don’t want to wish away your teenage years. That’s great advice! If you respect yourself you can’t go wrong. We just watched the video for your song It Gets Better (about bullying). It’s really powerful and thoughtful. Is bullying something you’ve experienced personally? I believe we all have experienced bullying in some form. As an artist, I want to send a message through my work. At the time that I released the single, I was distraught by everything that was taking place in the news and I wanted to have a voice. When I heard It Gets Better I knew I wanted to record the song because it spoke to me. It speaks about having hope and seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. It’s such an inspiring song and I thought it would be important to share my feelings on the issue. DRESS: Marimekko EARRINGS: Topshop NECKLACE: BCBG Max Azria RING: BaubleBox
Relationships are a lot of work, so sometimes it’s better to just let love find you rather than search for it.

ON FASHION How would you describe your personal style? Fashion is just as important as the choices you make as an actor. I constantly infuse fashion into my life, because you can express yourself through a piece of clothing. With my look right now, I’m incorporating a lot of uniqueness and simplicity. I love feminine silhouettes that are more classic—but I also love the masculine and edgy silhouettes, too! I always joke about my style and say that I have this punk girl hidden inside of me, because I love leather and making bold statements with my look! Do you have any favorite items that you’ll wear out before you part with them? Yes! I will not let go of my leather jackets! They completely change a look in the simplest way by giving it a slight edge. I kind of collect them. So, every time I see a new jacket, I try to convince my parents that it’s an investment!
ON EDUCATION In an interview last year, you stressed the importance of getting a college education. With as busy as you are these days, is that plan still in your future? A college education is extremely important to me, and I plan on working on both my career and working toward completing my education at the same time. Education is important no matter the choices you make in life. It adds so much more knowledge and experience to one’s life. I also believe that it is something that no one can take away from you. My degree is in Criminal Justice, and this is what I’m doing now. Would you major in theatre, music, or something out of left field? I would major in something like business or architecture. I don’t want to study anything ‘art’ related because my fulfillment of going to college is to gain more knowledge and learn more about myself. I want to continue working in the industry while studying.

I know that it’s kind of a crazy goal to achieve, but I know I can accomplish it!
ON FAMILY Your family seems so incredibly supportive, moving to Los Angeles in 2010 so you could pursue acting. How big a part do they play in your professional decisions? My family is extremely supportive! My parents always told my brother and me that we could accomplish anything that we set our minds to, especially if we’re passionate about it. I’m so thankful to have such a loving and supportive family because this industry can be a lot to deal with at times. I don’t know what I would do without them, they definitely play a major role in all of my professional decisions. I value their opinions and ideas, while I acknowledge the fact that they have the best interest for me. How do your friends and family in Indiana react to seeing you on the show? I believe, at first, it was kind of strange for my friends to see me on TV because they’ve always known me as Claudia and not as the characters I play. Also, I believe that the idea of a girl from a college town in Indiana moving to L.A. to pursue her dreams is somewhat unimaginable. All of my friends embrace my choices and find it exciting that they can tune in and watch me on TV. They are so supportive and it’s amazing to have that kind of feedback from your close friends. Los Angeles is such a transient town. We hear you travel back to Indiana often. Does your family keep you grounded? My family definitely keeps me grounded. They are the glue that holds everything together because it’s easy to get lost in the chaos of the industry. Staying humble and being appreciative is really important to me, because I realize the hard work it took to be where I am today, and I know that it can all go away in a second. We read that you studied in Poland to be conversational in your father’s first language. That is very cool, and such a great sign of respect for your dad. Any other hidden talents you’d like to share, or anything that would surprise your fans? I believe my fans would be surprised to know that I race downhill skiing. I started this in Michigan years ago and a ‘pace setter’ for Nastar Downhill skiing asked me to join the circuit when I was 6 years old! I am very fast and people have a hard time keeping up with me! A trend that has seemingly followed you in your acting —GA career as well! m

being the large budget required for each printed issue. Our goal was always to reach as many young women as possible, and it was just not feasible to provide the printed version of Miabella to readers on a global scale. We decided that the digital edition was the best solution, although we are not ruling out returning to print in the future. We’ve received several questions concerning the printed issue recently, so we just wanted to clarify why we chose to make that change. —xoxo, Gina

You Are AWESOME!
Expecting respect requires you to know how awesome you are. From your head to your toes, you rock. Whether it is your fantastic art skills or your natural ability to listen to others, something about you makes you shine. Know what makes you awesome and be proud of it. Throughout life, Confidence should be one of your best friends. Take her with you wherever you go. Especially on your dates!
You Should Be Treated Well
Girls who expect respect from their dates know they deserve to be treated well. This goes beyond him opening doors for you or taking care of the bill. Those things are nice, but a boy who calls you names, makes you feel bad about yourself, or does not follow through with his plans is not worth your time. You are awesome, remember? Awesome people, like yourself, should only date other awesome people.
You Will Attract a Better Boyfriend
Want to find a guy who treats you well? That will be hard to do if you are dating someone else who does not. Identify how you want to be treated in a relationship before you are ever in a relationship. If the first guy you meet does not treat you how you want to be treated, you can move on to the next one. Do not be afraid to be a little choosy—your time and heart are precious.
No Respect = No Fun
Dating someone who does not respect you is pretty much the pits. Too many women know this firsthand. According to the World Health Organization, 1 in 3 women across the globe experiences abuse and disrespect in an intimate relationship, due to no fault of her own. We hope you are never one of them, but if you or someone you know is in an unsafe relationship, please know there are places you can turn for help. Tell an adult you trust, or contact the National Dating Abuse Hotline at (800) 331-9474, or www.loveisrespect.org. You are not alone. 24 MIABELLA • Aug/Sep 2013
So, how exactly can you expect respect?
of Dating
The Bottom Line is This: Attention is Not Respect It is flattering when someone flirts with you or asks you out on a date. Knowing someone is a little interested can make you feel super special. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with that; in fact, it is pretty exciting! But attention is not the same as respect. Please do not confuse a guy’s pursuit of you as respect because you are excited and tired of being single. Attention thinks you are a little cute. Respect knows you are awesome. Girls who expect respect in their relationships do not want just any boyfriend—they want an AWESOME boyfriend! They know that being single is a whole lot better than being disrespected. A little bit of attention does not make them compromise their standards. They know that patience is a virtue. So, expect respect in your relationships. Expect respect in all your relationships. You can do it! Channel your inner Aretha Franklin and sing R-E-S-P-E-C-T a million times at the top of your lungs if you need extra motivation. Respect is totally worth it, and
you are, too!
AKIRAH ROBINSON is a licensed social worker who loves talking to young women about the pursuit of healthy relationships. If you are not dating anyone yet, here are a few questions to consider: What makes me awesome? How do I want to be treated in a relationship? How do I not want to be treated in a relationship?
Think long and hard about your answers—and do not develop a case of amnesia when the opportunity to date arises. When it comes to your standards, stand firm! When you find yourself considering a relationship with someone new, here are a few other questions you can ask: Do I feel good about myself when I am with him? Does he respect my physical boundaries? Is he kind to other people, like servers at restaurants & my friends? Do I feel safe around him? Can I be myself around him? Does he encourage me to do things I love with people I love?
If you can answer all of these questions with a resounding “YES!” that is a very good sign. Get to know him better and have fun. (And if he has any brothers, be sure to tell your friends.) If you cannot answer “yes” to many of these questions, trust your gut. You deserve to be happy, but you are the only one who can truly determine if you are. Aug/Sep 2013 • MIABELLA 25

So, I totally get the insomnia thing. During my 35-minute interview with Jessie’s Debby Ryan, it became clear that her mind must never take a vacation. Those 2 a.m. tweets are just one of the many indications that her self-proclaimed title of ‘insomniac’ is completely warranted. What I discovered was this young star is a combustible powerhouse of talent, perseverance and, most of all, passion. She has the capacity to explore 10 different thoughts in a two-minute timeframe, and probably multi-task like it is her sole purpose in life. But with that passion comes great depth and creativity, a steadfast love for her friends and family, and what I can only describe as an erupting cackle of infectious enthusiasm that other people may define, in more simplified terms, as ‘a laugh.’ Turning 20 years old this past May, she is officially no longer a teenager—a milestone she says “felt weird but was so natural. In a way, I’ve really been leading up to it for a while, working a job and paying rent since I was 14. So as much as I was hesitant to grow up and leave the teen years behind, it’s been such a gracious transition for me.” Make no mistake, Debby is not one who can be convinced that growing up means passing on an opportunity to have a whole lot of fun, “When I invited people over for my birthday it was carnival-themed. Celebrating the death of my youth through really childish things, like jumping in a bounce house and stuff.” Within the first five minutes of conversation, I already want to be her best friend. Though I may have to take a number behind her family, friends, coworkers, and 2.4+ million Twitter followers. She shoots from the hip, that is for certain. She is genuine, endearing, and down-to-earth. But what is most striking about Debby, beyond her effortless ability to marry the glamour of screen legend Rita Hayworth with a penchant for outrageous physical comedy (a feat that would surely make

the legendary Lucille Ball proud), is how adamant she is about being a positive role model for girls. Miabella: So let’s talk about your hit show Jessie. Congratulations on picking up a third season! I feel the biggest draw with Jessie is how relatable your character is, and that she gives great advice. I love that my girls watch you because they learn something every time. I know you’re a co-producer on the show. Are there any aspects of the show that you insist on? Debby Ryan: First, thank you! That is a really big reason why I do what I do. When Suite Life ended, I already had a Disney Channel movie or two behind me. The reason I [elected to stay in TV] is exactly what you just said to me. That was the standard. That was the kind of condition upon it...and [Executive Producer] Pamela Eells O’Connell, our gracious and fearless show runner. I was kind of like ‘I have to do it with Pam’. She brings that heart, she brings that warmth, she brings the lesson without it feeling preachy and peachy. I wanted to do something that people my age could watch, and that moms who were sticking it out at home with kids could watch. It’s so important. You know, I was raised very well. I have very good parents who have morals, and instilled principles and it’s why I’m doing certain things, why I’m doing certain roles, why I treat people a certain way. That is why I am the way I am, and why the show is the way it is. There’s a lot of me in Jessie. A couple things I insist on as co-producer, to answer your question, is I don’t want [girls like yours] growing up too quickly, I don’t want them wearing too much makeup… M: Yes! Thank you for that! DR: Oh, you’re welcome. You’re very welcome! I hope there’s never a moment when [your daughters] come up to you in tiny little sequined mini-skirts and be like ‘Can I wear this? The girl on my favorite show wore that.’ I never wanted 54 MIABELLA • Aug/Sep 2013
to be that girl, and I never wanted to create a show on a network that had that. It’s really what I love about Disney is that they listen to that. They believe in family values, they believe in believing in yourself, and hope and individuality and making a difference in the world. Those things were instilled in me growing up, so I really wanted to carry that through the show. It’s the little things, whenever the kids get a little too sassy as their characters, you will see moments where Jessie corrects them so they don’t get away with it. We cut out a lot of things that might initially be read that way and we would add a sweeter tone to them. They don’t make fun of the adults. They don’t make fun of the authority figure. They make fun of Jessie just the same as Jessie makes fun of Jessie, and Jessie makes fun of the kids…kind of like a big sister. But we really make sure that, at the end of the day, you do have to answer to the authority figure and there’s always someone around—even if it can’t be their parents. It was just those little things that were so integral in how I was raised. It allows the kids to have more fun, because when there are no rules you kind of just go off and nothing becomes fun anymore. Whereas, if you have rules, it’s the little things that you can do that become more fun for you. M: You are quite mature beyond your years. It’s really impressive. DR: I’m a real-life nanny! (laughing) M: In all honesty, you are the type of girl that Miabella speaks to, or wants to speak to, or wants her to become: very self-assured, very confident, with a lot of ambition, and you are all of that. It’s very impressive, I just have to tell you. So what would you like to see in store for your character this season? Do you see her going in a different direction? DR: I do. You know, it’s funny. I like to limit my input to the smaller things. We have an incredibly gifted team of writers and, like I said, a great show runner and producers and, obviously, Disney. Before
every season, I get to sit down with the network and [they say] okay what do you want to see from your girl, what do you want to see from your show, how do you want to see her grow this season. I would really like to see Jessie grow as an actress, as a career woman, and as a person. Because as much as [Jessie] will always be a part of this family that she stumbled into, she does feel kind of out to find a career. Sometimes you watch her and you realize she has no idea what she is doing. She’s starting over in life, and that’s so important to show. That’s what I really wanted to showcase from the beginning— that as the kids are going through their learning stage Jessie is going through the exact same thing, just on a different scale. We really wanted to explore a realistic representation of people growing— growing apart and growing together— so you might see big shifts in that. What I loved about the end of the second season is that you meet Jessie’s dad and you really get to know why she is the way she is, and you really got to see that world which helps you understand her a bit more. M: Just going back to your relationship with the show runner and the writers, when you have that kind of dynamic you’re only going to be successful. So I wish you the very best on that. DR: I love being so happy to see the people that I work with. When you’re working 12 hours a day with people, five days a week, you see these people more than your family. And not only that, they work so hard and they’re so talented. People don’t see their faces, and tend to not give them as much appreciation, but I really couldn’t do anything I do without this incredible group of 140 people that really make it all possible. M: Aw, that’s so sweet. I’m glad to hear you’re so appreciative. I’m sure there are some celebrities who are not. DR: Of course, there are.

M: We won’t mention any names, but we know who they are. So tell me how The Muppets movie came about because that’s hilarious to me, and the trailer looks so funny. I am so jealous that you got to act with Miss Piggy and Kermit…you have no idea! DR: It’s so funny, I know! There’s a photo on my cell phone of me and Kermit and Miss Piggy and I am not allowed to send it to anyone, so of course I sent it to my best friend, my boyfriend, and my mom. We all grew up with them and everyone has a favorite Muppet. It’s that kind of thing and it was incredible. And the cast of cameos in this scene that we did I should not even tell you, it’s so good. It’s so out of control. We had a really great group of people and my friend Bridgit [Mendler] and I were in this scene together. We kind of had a royal wedding scene, without giving too much away. Crazy hats galore and just so much fun. But that was an amazing thing to add to my resumé, it’s just a fun little cameo.
DR: Hmm, that’s kind of two different questions. I love Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, I love April Smith and the Great Picture Show, the Hush Sound. The Hush Sound has a bit of blues-y feel, a little bit of that Chicago feel. Grace Potter is from Vermont and plays folk-blues rock. I love Tom Petty, and my writing partner as well loves Tom Petty and he kind of got me addicted to him, so there’s that influence there. We looked into a lot of Katy Perry. We really threw a lot of different genres together to create one consistent sound. Writing it with my friends was amazing. Writing songs is something I’ve always been addicted to and something I always wanted to do and come out and put my face with my music. I would much rather write [songs that are] more personal to me. It’s very much done the classic way where it’s not a bunch of
M: So I am also excited to talk about the new album, we have to talk about the new album! DR: It’s funny that you say that, it’s literally playing right now in the background. I don’t know if you can hear that, that’s my band rehearsing. I just put the microphone down and grabbed the phone. So that’s what that was, we’re going over it right now. M: (Bummed I couldn’t hear them practicing, I continued with my questions.) So who or what were your biggest inspirations for this album?
DRESS: ModCloth; BRACELET: Modern Verité
different co-writers, different producers… everything was done with continuity. [This album was] inspired by my fears and by the things that keep me up at night and the things that I believe in, and being afraid to care about someone or something, leaving someone or something and then realizing how important it is. How love is all we have at the end of the day, and how that is the most important of all. And you have to show that, and have to fight for that, and have to believe in that with everything. And then there are songs like Mulholland Drive, which is essentially about living in Hollywood and people’s obsession with these cheap thrills and getting lost in it all. You know, wax figures and handprints and how it could be such a fairy world. And there’s a song about insomnia, which is something that my fans kind of always make fun of me for. I’m up on Twitter late at night answering their questions. M: I noticed that you are up a lot at 2:30 in the morning. DR: People will be like, ‘If you can be on Twitter at 2:30 a.m. why wouldn’t you be an insomniac?’ But that’s not the point. The point is it kind of turns you into a zombie, and you’re not a person. You can’t sleep because of all the things that worry you and stress you out and put pressure on you. So [the album] really just shows the inner workings of my mind in a way that I haven’t as much before. I have, every once in a while, in a random Tweet or Instagram photo, but these are feelings I feel in the sounds that I feel them in—and that’s all my record essentially is. Aug/Sep 2013 • MIABELLA 57
M: I’m really excited to hear it. So no release date yet? DR: We don’t have an official date yet. Well, we’re not announcing the date yet, I should say. But you’re going to hear a single and you’re going to get a taste of it and you’re going to get a feel as [everyone’s] going back to school. You’ll definitely have the record memorized before Halloween, I can tell you that. M: Yay! And I love that your brother produced your album, and that you keep everything in the family. Is that something that’s really important to you? What I mean is, do you gravitate toward him because he’s your brother and he knows you really well or because you two are just really in tune with each other musically? DR: I think the first is because he knows me better than anyone. We both found music and acting together at the same time. I was more conscious of the music and dancing part, and he was more focused on acting first—and then we realized that we both love the other one more and switched. Since the beginning, he believed in me more than anyone else and I wasn’t sure I could do it. So I think that not only was he the one that convinced me to do it…I agreed to do it knowing that I could trust him to tell my stories in a way that is unmanufactured and untarnished. Also, he sees things in me that I don’t see. And he is going to push me to places that I didn’t know I could go [musically] because he knows that I can get there and be better. I don’t think anyone sees that in me the way he does. On top of that, he’s a great producer. If he was a stranger and I heard his work, and I worked with him and measured him against five other producers, he would be my pick every time. He’s great at what he does, he maintains an amazing atmosphere, he’s very patient, very understanding. He gets the best results out of you. He’s honest. He’s everything you would want in a producer. That’s not to say that we don’t fight like cats and dogs in the studio. But at the end of the day, I trust him. 58 MIABELLA • Aug/Sep 2013

I AGREED TO DO IT KNOWING THAT
I COULDtoTRUST HIM tell my stories in a way that
is unmanufactured and untarnished. —on why it was important for her brother, Chase, to produce her new album
M: That’s awesome. I’m not even a singer and I want to work with him. (laughing) You strike me as someone who is an old soul, and I am really excited to hear what this album is going to bring. I listened to you on your website singing Superstition with Brenna Whitaker, and, to me, your voice is reminiscent of a young Stevie Nicks. I don’t know if anyone’s ever told you that. DR: Not only was she a great frontwoman but she revolutionized what she did, not only with Fleetwood Mac but with herself. Thank you! That’s a great compliment. And honestly, I think, more than anything, some of the conditions going into [this record] were that I could sing in my low range. Listen, with Lana Del Rey coming out, it’s not about the auto-tuned pretty voices anymore. And with The Lumineers on the radio, people are listening to more earthy kind of [music]. M: I’m actually very happy to see that trend —going back to that soulful, meaningful lyric. DR: Absolutely! I believe in real music and earthy kind of voices. I believe in soulful things and there’s something you can do living in that range. Not to say that there’s not a lot of brightness and fun and ukulele on the record, but you definitely hear it. So, the second condition was my lyrics. The thing that I insisted on more than anything else was that no one could touch my lyrics. You can change my melody, my
structure, my arrangement, and whatever instruments, but my lyrics have to be my lyrics. [They] read like a poem, and which I’ll be releasing actually before the record. So I’m interested to see what you personally think of [them]. M: I will definitely let you know what I think, I can’t wait to hear them! So, I have to ask, you were a self-proclaimed nerd in high school. A claim I have a hard time believing. Since this is the back-to-school issue, what advice would you give to your high school self ? DR: Going into high school, everyone’s new. Everyone’s figuring it all out. Don’t be afraid of making friends. You’re going to be expected to know a couple people in your class, you’re going to be expected to not know a bunch of people. So don’t be afraid of that. I think I was really just scholastically driven. I come from chess club and AP classes, and I graded papers for the teacher. I would say ‘balance’. And that’s actually something I’m still working on, I’m a very hot and cold person. If you can’t tell, I’m a very passionate person. Hang out with friends just as much as you do your homework just as much as you do fun things. Work for the weekend. And don’t get stressed out about the things that will come. M: That is good advice! Is there any crazy rumor that has circulated about you that you want to dispel right now?
DR: Oh, there’s always a rumor that I’m dating someone from One Direction. Oh, you know what? In Latin America, someone in Latin America, every 6 or 9 months will start a rumor and they’ll make a direct quote—which is in Spanish but it’s translated, or in English [in a way] that I wouldn’t say things. [It’s always something negative] between me and Demi Lovato. Which is ridiculous because, if you’re going to make up a rumor about me make up something believable. I’ve probably done 20 interviews from the time I was 15 where I was like, “Demi Lovato is incredibly talented. She’s one of the most talented vocalists of our generation.” She’s incredibly self-aware. She’s so brave, to be able to come out to the world and tell her stories the way that she has: candid, and not lose her sense of joy in what she does. Because that sort of thing can defeat you, and the fact that she is, as she says, unbroken and she is on top of the world right now. She’s directing her own music videos and she’s really calling the shots. [Demi’s] a smart businesswoman and she’s a smart brand, and she’s a brilliant vocalist, and she’s an incredible performer. It’s absolutely unfathomable, and for anyone to think that I…I just think it’s one of those rumors because people know how much I respect her. I don’t know, it’s absolutely ridiculous. That one’s totally not true... ...and I’m not dating a guy in an British boy band. m Aug/Sep 2013 • MIABELLA 59

I’ve worked with plenty of high school students who have openly admitted that the beginning of each school year is, by far, the most nerve-racking time. A new school year brings with it new perspectives, lots of stress, and plenty of surprises. Not everyone has changed drastically over the summer, but those who have are noticed and many end up feeling judged. If you are returning to your same school and are overcome with feelings of anxiety, imagine how someone might feel if she had to start all over at a school she’s never even been to before.
Transitioning to a new school can be pretty scary. I mean, let’s be real, you’re walking into a situation that is COMPLETELY foreign to you—new faces, new classrooms, and new rules to follow can cause even the most even-keeled person to feel uncomfortable. Honestly, who would be jumping up and down at the idea of walking away from everything they know and love only to start all over at a school where nobody even knows their name?

As a new student, there are several things you can do to make the transition less stressful and more enjoyable. While it may seem DIFFICULT at first, say hello to other students and ask them questions about the school or city. If you can’t manage to get the words out, give a genuine smile when someone looks your way. By showing interest in the other students and their city, you’re letting them know you’re a friendly person—and they will likely be drawn to you right away. If speaking up is too difficult at first, JOIN an afterschool program or activity. It should be no surprise that people with similar interests ofte n get along, and joining these groups or teams will help you meet other students like yourself.

ASTRONAUT ABBY
by Tanya Umphrey
This Starry-Eyed Minnesota Teen Teaches Us Nothing Is Out Of Reach If You Work Hard And Keep Your Eye On The Ball...or, In This Case, the Planets! Some have aspirations that are not limited to the world we live in, but instead reach beyond Earth and into the stars. For those of us who have dreamed of becoming an astronaut, the desires to go to space camp and orbit Earth usually fade after we realize the years of hard work involved. At a very young age, Abigail Harrison’s interest in science fiction movies and novels that she shares with her father sparked an interest in space travel. Just a few years later, she realized that becoming an astronaut and going to space could be a reality. Now, at 16, she stays very busy on her quest—not just to be the first woman on Mars, but the first astronaut ever to reach the Red Planet. Growing up in Minnesota, far from the once bustling space community of Cape Canaveral, Florida, Abby enjoyed, like so many kids her age, climbing trees and playing with neighborhood kids. However, once the night sky captivated her attention, Abby’s focus shifted to the chance to visit our celestial neighbors. As Abigail Harrison’s passion for space grew, her parents took notice. They encouraged their starry-eyed daughter, making way for “Astronaut Abby.” Right away you realize Abby isn’t your typical teenager. In addition to schoolwork and after-school activities, her every day responsibilities include speaking engagements around the country, keeping in touch with her astronaut pen pals (some of whom may be at the International Space Station), giving interviews to global media outlets (from her local news stations to the BBC), and traveling to launches and other space travel-related events. 62 MIABELLA • Aug/Sep 2013
Abby sharpening her skills at the U.S. Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama.
Becoming an astronaut is not an easy task, but that didn’t deter this intrepid teen. By the time she turned 12, “I started to research what it would require to become an astronaut,” she explains. “I really started to think about it in solid terms, like what type of schools I would have to go to, what degrees I would need, and things that were important, such as exercise, if I wanted to get into this elite group of people that go to space.” “My parents have been amazingly supportive and they help keep me on track,” says Abby. “This is something that I know I want, but sometimes things can get sidelined and my parents really help me stay focused.” This fall, as Abby enters her junior year of high school, she will also be starting classes at the University of Minnesota. Though she will be working toward her double major of microbiology and geology, with a minor in advanced math engineering, she still recalls her favorite teacher who helped pique her interest in science. Ms. Hill was her 5th-grade science teacher who organized an after-school program called “Girls in Engineering, Math & Science,” or GEMS. Abby, and other science-minded girls, would research various topics, build robots that compete in robotics competitions, and conduct experiments assigned by their mentor.
All images courtesy of the Harrison family.
“[Ms. Hill] was so passionate about math and science and [GEMS], it really inspired me to find a passion in science,” Abby recalls. “I was already interested, but this was my first time really getting to do hands-on science. It was just amazing to see someone who was that passionate that she would spend hours and hours every week teaching us after school when she wasn’t getting paid. The only payment she got was seeing us learn new things, and that was amazing to me.” Being involved in a group like GEMS at such a young age benefited Abby. Not only did she develop more enthusiasm for math and engineering, she also discovered a fondness for biology. It was during a trip to Costa Rica with other GEMS members that the aspiring astronaut’s zeal for biology grew, while learning about the importance of ecology and environmental protection. Abby hopes that her time in Costa Rica is something that will carry
over to her exploration of Mars, by assisting in a search for biological evidence of life. Ms. Hill, with whom Abby remains in touch, is just one of many people who had a great impact on her journey. At 11 years old, Abby met Luca Parmitano, an astronaut with the Italian Space Agency, during a trip with her mother to see one of the final Space Shuttle missions. Parmitano arrived at the International Space Station on May 28th, 2013. He and Abby developed a strong bond and he now serves as her mentor. “Originally, I thought that I would have to go into the hard sciences of physics and advanced mathematics. While I’m interested in engineering, physics, and math, the subjects I really have a passion for are biology and geology, and so I was a little disappointed that I wasn’t able to coincide my two dreams,” Abby explains. “But then I met a couple of people who told me to ‘do what you love’…not what you think NASA or any other people are looking for. [NASA is] looking for people that are really passionate and good at what they do.” Even though Abby regularly communicates with people whose careers take them to the stars, she has managed to remain incredibly grounded. She feels that the most exciting aspects of her journey to date have been the support she receives from the international space community, as well as her local community, and the opportunity to share her story with the younger generation, “I feel like when I talk to kids, and they’re interested, and I see there’s a light in their eyes that comes on, that has been amazing to me. Being able to share my passion with others. Even more interesting than attending launches has been being able to share my experiences with the community.” With such an ambitious dream in a maledominated field, Astronaut Abby has some advice for any woman, young or old, “I think that my main advice for women and girls who are looking to enter any field, but especially fields that have been historically more disposed to men, is to not get discouraged…to not let anyone tell them that they cannot do it because of their gender or because of anything else. Once you find something you’re interested in [do not] think of yourself as a woman going into it, but as a person going into it.” m

Undone Waves
Relax this fall and give your hair a break from the braids with long, loose waves. This look works best with long layers, when the hair is not cut too blunt. Prep your damp hair with a smoothing cream. Blow dry with medium-sized barrel brush. Then finish by using a 1¼-inch curling iron to create waves in twoinch sections, curling the hair away from the face. (Lips: NARS Lip Gloss in “Scandal”)

Wine-Stained Lips For those of you wanting a deeper lip color without the heavy look of a lipstick, opt for a sheer balm or stain in wine or berry. Messy Low Pony This is an quick & easy solution, especially if you’re running late or just having a bad hair day! egos and become superstars in their own right. Logan is currently touring with the band. In the meantime, we caught up with this busy Texas native, who turns 23 on September 14th, to talk about everything from the band’s latest album, 24/Seven, to what makes him superstitious. It’s amazing that you, Demi Lovato, the Jonas Brothers, and Selena Gomez are all Dallas natives—there must be something in the water! So much of this generation’s talent comes out of your hometown, do you ever hang out with each other in L.A.? My schedule on the road doesn’t allow a lot of free time, but whenever I’m home I try and make as much time with my friends as possible. Last year, a few of my tour dates matched up with Demi so we got to hang at the venues in a few different cities, which was cool! How often do you get back to Texas? You are right in the middle of your fourth concert series with BTR, the Summer Break Tour. What’s been the best thing about this tour so far? The best thing about touring is traveling around the world and meeting our fans....that never gets old! Tell us how it came about that Victoria Justice joined the tour. Victoria has been a friend of the group’s for awhile, and when she expressed interest about joining the tour, we thought it would be a perfect match. She’s talented, fun, and we’re happy to have her with us!
It seems everyone’s had a weird or reoccurring dream at one time or another. What’s the weirdest dream you’ve had, and what do you think it meant?
What has been the hardest thing about touring, in general?
I have reoccurring dreams of flying. Not sure exactly what it means, but I’m hoping there will be a movie in the future where I play a superhero. (laughing)
Every now and again I get a little homesick on the road and miss a normal routine, but for the most part, touring is exciting and there’s never a dull moment. What things do you do to relax on tour? I’m a huge foodie! Any time I find a cool restaurant in a new city, I jump on it! We’ve had a few days off in cities close to the beach, so that’s always relaxing and fun! What is your favorite song to perform?
Are you superstitious? I’m not usually superstitious, but the third bay in the tour bus is bad luck for me. I avoid putting baggage in there at all cost. We know you love to laugh. Who makes you laugh most?
“Song For You” has awesome choreography and is a perfect song for summer. Definitely a crowd favorite!
My family makes me laugh the most. My sister is such a goofball, and she always knows how to put a smile on my face.
24/Seven has been really well received by fans! What is your favorite song off the album?
What’s the best practical joke you’ve pulled on your bandmates on this tour?
One of my favorite songs from the 24/Seven album, which I actually wrote, is “Untouchable”.
Our new addition to our tour, DJ D-Wrek, gets pranked a fair amount because he’s “the new guy”. Our last show we grabbed all the silly-string we could find and got him pretty bad. It was one of the funnier moments, because he had no idea it was coming.
What are your plans after the tour ends on August 15th? VACATION!
Since this is the Back-to-School issue, what advice would you give to your high school self? My advice would be to have as much fun as you can the last few years of school. Try new things and make friends with everyone! m
