From the Head of School Dr. John Davies

A

s I write this message and reflect on the 2016-17 school year, I’m acutely aware that this is the beginning of my 32nd and final year at Miami Country Day School. A place where I have spent half my life. A place where my sons, Christian ’07 and Harrison ’09, literally grew up. A community where Roxanne and I have developed so many wonderful relationships over the years. It would be impossible to share in one message all the ways Country Day has grown and transformed over the years. From the people who have taught the more than 5,000 current and former students, from the myriad of families who entrusted their children to us, to countless philanthropic individuals who have given of their time, expertise and resources to lead, govern and support our school. The transformation in the campus appearance is probably the one area we can all relate to whether it was during Country Day’s early years or in the present with the current campus. Many will recall the ’70s when the campus transformation began as the school transitioned from an all-boys K-9 boarding/day school to a co-ed day school with a high school. Spaces which had served as dormitories and faculty residences morphed into classrooms. In the ’80s, buildings originally built in part by students gave way to new construction such as the James G. Garner Family Student

2

Activities Center, which housed classrooms, the cafeteria and a stage. The J. Calvin Rose Athletic Center also opened as the athletic program grew along with the new high school. The following decade brought an updated library, an Upper School complex and the Abess Center for Environmental Studies. Today, the school campus has grown from 14 to 22 acres with the most recent additions being the Michael J. and Katherine E. Franco Center, the World Languages Center and certainly the new Center for the Arts. In total nearly $68 million in facilities improvements have occurred on our campus since 2000. There is one aspect of our campus that complicated our efforts for as long as I can remember. It presented significant challenges to all of our campus master plan efforts over the past four decades. For those who remember parking in the gravel North Lot for many years, prior to the building of the Center for the Arts, you were keenly aware of a house in the middle of our campus. Built in the ’40s, the house and accompanying property provided a home and a business for the Leonard Family. The school maintained an easement for access to the people who resided there. Coman and Frances Leonard and their two sons, lived there and Mr. Leonard operated a landscape nursery. The Leonard boys, Coman

and Foster, grew up in this house and attended Country Day. Until recently Frances Leonard, a retired teacher who originally hailed from Midland, PA, and her son, Foster resided there. In July 2016, Miami Country Day School started negotiations with the Leonard family attorney to purchase the residence and property owned by the Leonards. In December 2016, the Land Acquisition Committee of Miami Country Day School recommended to the Board of Trustees that the school purchase the property. After 40 years of intermittent conversations, the Leonard family sold the property to J. Calvin Rose Athletic Center

Koch Athletic Complex

Country Day. Sadly, Mrs. Leonard passed away only a few months after the closing of this property. It would be hard to overestimate the importance of the acquisition of the Leonard property and what it means to our school. The process is now underway to develop a new Campus Master Plan. For now, the land where the Leonard residence and nursery once stood is now a beautiful green space that will serve for additional athletic and play space. As the “front lawn” of the Center for the Arts it provides an aesthetically pleasing view as students meander on the walkway from the World Languages Center along Leonie’s Garden’s pathway around to the entrance of the Franco Center. It’s truly amazing to now be able to see clearly from the entrance of the Center for the Arts across the Country Day campus. By this time next year a change in leadership will have occurred. Gary Butts, who has so admirably served the school for over a decade, will be Country Day’s first President and the new Interim Head will be on board. Together with the leadership of the school they will continue moving the school forward. I am confident that this talented, passionate group of individuals will maintain the same commitment to the school’s Mission that has guided its growth and sustainability over the past 80 years. The future of Miami Country Day holds great possibilities! Rox and I look forward to following the progress and being a part of the school community as proud alumni parents for many years to come.

Thank You Dr. John Davies From Christopher Bellows, Board of Trustees President

J

ohn Davies has been a part of Miami Country Day School for 32 years. For me, he has been the fabric of the school for the more than three decades that my family has been involved with the school. I met John Davies when he started his career here in 1986 as the Middle School Director under Bill Creeden, the newly named Head of School at that time. I graduated law school in 1985 and was beginning my law career in my hometown of Miami. My father was involved with the school as a Board member, so

offense and he got away with a lot of fouls! Later, in the mid-1990s, I dealt with John in a more official capacity when a student sports and education program called Right Trak used the school’s facilities during the summer and school year. I was a co-founder of that program along with Sue Edmiston (a high school counselor at North Miami High School). I remain friends with most of the Right Trak graduates (now in their 30s) today. As the program grew, and Country Day’s role expanded, Nina Lucchi took over the operation and coordination of the activities. We met on campus weekly with Country Day students who tutored and mentored the Right Trakkers, many of whom came from inner-city neighborhoods. The program was part of the school for many years. During the early years of Right Trak, John Davies approached us and invited Right Trakkers to test and apply for admission to Country Day. As a result, several of the Right Trakkers became Country Day students and I would drive them to school most days, and did my best to make sure they kept up with their work and other responsibilities. This placed me on campus a lot (I was also Chris Bellows and Chris Polite ’02, MCDS Athletics and Auxiliary Program Coordinator and former Right Trakker working full time as a lawyer). During the late 1990s, David Shoaf (a trustee), asked if I had some connections to the school already. Plus, I lived a I would consider serving on the school’s Board of Trustees. block away from the campus. Some of my first interactions That was almost 20 years ago and it has gone by in a flash. with John were on the basketball court. There was a group I admit that when John shared with me in October 2016 who would gather weekly (sometimes more) at the school that he was retiring after the 2017-18 school year, I thought he gym and play ball. He was good on defense, not so great on would change his mind. When he told me in December that

“As a school community we owe John a debt of gratitude for the programs and projects he humbly and quietly created or inspired that have impacted so many students, teachers, and the entire school community.” - Chris Bellows we needed to prepare for his transition away from the school, I finally accepted that his decision was final and began the process for new leadership. Recognizing that John had implemented a bifurcated system of leadership, between the academic and financial spaces of the school, and that he had collaborated well with Gary Butts as Chief Operating Officer, the Board decided that rather than disrupt that system, we would formalize this bifurcated governance going forward. The focus is now on hiring a new Head who can primarily focus on the academic side of the school as it relates to faculty, student experience, curriculum, and innovation and who will work in partnership with Gary Butts, who as President will concentrate on the school’s financial sustainability and general operations. In other words, beginning July 1, 2018, the school will have both a Head of School (responsible for academics) and a President (responsible for the school’s finances and operations). I will be forever grateful to John Davies for so many things that he brought to Miami Country Day during his tenure, all of which have guided and strengthened the school’s Mission. As a school community we owe John a debt of gratitude for the programs and projects he humbly and quietly created or inspired that have impacted so many students, teachers and the entire school community. His day-to-day activities with students, teachers and parents have elevated our school tremendously. For me personally, one area for which I am grateful is his effort to provide opportunities for those who cannot attend Country Day with auxiliary programs like Right Trak and today, Breakthrough Miami. These programs make us part of a larger neighborhood, and give so many young people an opportunity to experience the Spartan life. I believe our community is a better place

because of John Davies. Better, because of the programs he developed and the courage he has had to embrace change whenever change is in the school’s best interest. I am grateful for John Davies for many reasons, first and foremost for his commitment to education for all students. And also, for allowing me so many years ago to be part of this wonderful family of lifelong learners.

INCOMING TRUSTEE

The Board of Trustees welcomed Valerio Toyos to the Board in 2017. Dr. Toyos and his family have been part of Miami Country Day School for five years. He is a physician specializing in Internal Medicine and owner of Toyos Enterprises. He and his wife, Janet, have a son, Max, in the 5th grade. Dr. Toyos is an active member of the Annual Giving, Philanthropy, and Campaign Committees. The Toyos family recently doubled their gift to the Campaign for the Arts and are members of Annual Giving’s 7500 Club. Welcome, Dr. Toyos.

Sean Clancy completes tenure as Chair of the Philanthropy Committee 2017 There are many people who volunteer their time and share their talents and expertise. There is only one Sean Clancy! Sean has shared his time and expertise with Miami Country Day School for more than 25 years and he has done so with all of his heart. As a parent, trustee and alumni parent, there is no way to calculate the hours Sean has spent in service to the students and teachers at Miami Country Day. In addition to serving 12 years as a Trustee and the Chair of the Development Committee (now the Philanthropy Committee), Sean was instrumental in the school’s most successful capital campaigns to date, Securing the Future, and the current Campaign for the Arts. It was Sean’s leadership, positive outlook and commitment to success, that resulted in the Koch Athletic Complex and the Franco Center, as well as secure funds for the school’s first-ever endowed teaching chairs. Leading the Campaign for the Arts, which resulted in the amazing Center for the Arts as well as additional endowment funding, Sean never doubted that we’d reach the $16.5 million goal. Perhaps it’s from his background as the son of an Irish Olympian, or his own experience as a member of the Miami Dolphins football team, that Sean leads and inspires others to success. Sean always said that Country Day is what it is today because of the many generous people who came before us and because of that we have an obligation to support the school and help make it an even more special place. While this is true, Country Day would not be the place it is without Sean Clancy and his commitment of time, energy, and resources. Thankfully, while Sean is transitioning his leadership to a different focus, he continues to be a very important member of our school community. We all have an obligation and opportunity to be like Sean in continuing to support Miami Country Day School. “It would be virtually impossible to overstate Sean Clancy’s impact on Country Day. During his leadership of the Development Committee, Country Day has raised over $26 million in the two most successful capital campaigns in the school’s history. During the same period, Annual Giving has grown from $420,000 to $1.2 million. Sean has always been passionate about our school and Country Day’s commitment to the education of the whole child. That passion and commitment has translated into his tremendous success as a trustee and leader. More than just being a great trustee for over a decade, Sean is also a stellar human being. When I think of Sean, I always think of one of my favorite quotes,“Those things that are most worth doing are done in the service of others.” Sean is a model of what it means to serve others and he always does it joyfully! We are all in his debt.” - John Davies “We are very lucky to have had a leader like Sean head the Philanthropy Committee for all of these years. His selfless commitment and continuous dedication to Philanthropy have made an incredible impact on MCDS and its community.” - Vanessa Abramowitz, Trustee and Chair, Philanthropy Committee, 2017-18

Ken Harris, July 10, 2016 Miami Country Day School lost a special friend, teacher, mentor, and leader on July 10, 2016. Former Headmaster Kenneth (Ken) LeRoy Harris passed away at the age of 89. Mr. Harris began his tenure at Miami Country Day School in 1953, met his wife Shirley, a teacher, shortly thereafter and married in 1956. Shirley taught at MCDS for 30 years and still lives in Miami Shores. Mr. Harris worked as a teacher at MCDS until 1963 when he became the school’s second Headmaster, a position he held until 1980. Mr. Harris led Miami Country Day during an interesting and challenging time as the school made the transition from an all-boys boarding school to a day school. Following his tenure as Headmaster, Mr. Harris served as Miami Country Day’s Director of Development until his retirement in 1982. As a testament to his commitment and service to the school, the Kenneth L. Harris Award was created and is awarded annually to a rising senior whose record indicates outstanding leadership, responsibility, scholarship, and citizenship, all values he embodied as Headmaster. Miami Country Day School was fortunate to have Mr. Harris’ leadership for over 30 years. Upon his death, many alumni, colleagues, and friends made contributions in his honor to the school’s Joseph Cerami Scholarship Fund. The scholarship is awarded to an incoming Freshmen who excels in both academics and athletics and understands the importance of community service. The scholarship is awarded every four years. Mr. Harris is survived by his wife Shirley, children Kenneth L. Harris ’76 and Donna Harris Osborne ’82, son-in-law Jack, granddaughter Morgan Nicole, and step-grandchildren Lauren Thiel and Dustin Sanctuary.

Special Thanks to Sol Saad, Chair, Finance Committee and Alumni parent. An important component of philanthropy is sharing one’s time and talents. In this regard, Sol Saad’s gift to Miami Country Day is immeasurable. During his substantial tenure as Chair of the Finance Committee, Country Day has benefited from his business acumen, wisdom, wealth of experience and technical knowledge of the world of business and finance. As the Finance Committee Chair he has led the school through complex negotiations on the construction bond, played a key role in maintaining Country Day’s financial sustainability and served as a great steward of the school’s resources as a member of the Investment Committee. Sol never says “no” when called upon by the school. As a result, he has spent countless hours as a volunteer in the service of our school. On a personal note, I am profoundly grateful for all that he has done for our school community. - Dr. John Davies, Head of School

I Why y We Give:

GATE GATEWAY Y GLOBAL CITIZEN TRAVEL SCHOLARSHIP Conny and Matthias Nixdorf

t’s hard for Glen Turf, Director of Global Studies & International Programs, to have to tell a student he or she can’t experience one of the GATEway study abroad programs. Fortunately, Conny and Matthias Nixdorf feel the same way. After learning about the impact their gift had on the program the previous year, they were motivated to support Mr. Turf ’s efforts further to establish the GATEway Global Citizen Travel Scholarship with a three-year financial commitment. This scholarship provided financial support that helped four students go to Spain this summer and will be available again in 2018 and 2019. “We know from experience the benefit travel has for children in learning about other places and cultures,” said Nixdorf. “We recognize the importance of this program and want to provide the opportunity for students who might not be able to participate.” Applicants for the scholarships are required to be on at least 80% financial aid, possess a cumulative GPA of 3.0, not have any single cumulative grade under a C, complete an application, provide a letter of recommendation, and have an interview with Mr. Turf and the selection committee.

GATEway Jr: Québec March 23 - March 29, 2018 for Middle School GATEway ¡Madrid! June 14 - July 13, 2018 for Upper School GATEway Alps: Geneva & Milan! June 14 - July 13, 2018 for Upper School GATEway Classic Italy July 13 - July 18, 2018 for Upper School

During the interview, students are asked several questions to gauge their ability to adapt to this type of experience since very few may have had any life experience remotely similar to what they will encounter during their time abroad. One of the questions asked was, “How will you be able to adapt to a new culture?” One of the recipients responded, “You know, every day when I step foot on this campus, it’s like another culture. I’m constantly adapting to a life that is so different from my own.” “That comment encapsulates everything that these four students stood for on the trip as they took everything in, wanted to experience it all, got out of their comfort zones, and truly lived every moment of the four week experience,” said Turf. “At the end, knowing that they probably would not be eligible to receive the scholarship again, one of the students quietly stated, ‘I’m going to tell everybody that the trip was horrible so that nobody else applies so that I can win it again!’” “I believe the smiles tell the story of the entire four weeks of our travels in Spain. In general, it was a fabulous group. The scholarship recipients got everything out of the experience that we had hoped; they were always engaged in class, attentive on tours, funny, and had their eyes wide open to everything that Spain had to offer. They never took their time

for granted and took it all in truly valuing this unique experience,” said Turf. GATEway, Miami Country Day School’s signature study abroad program has taken almost 100 Upper School students to Spain and France over the past four years, and is coming to the Middle School with GATEway Jr: Québec 2018. With GATEway ¡Madrid! turning five years old and the expansion to GATEway Alps! and GATEway Jr: Québec!, even more of our students are poised for memorable and life changing experiences abroad. This summer, GATEway expands to new sites. Students participating in GATEway Alps, will spend two weeks in Geneva, Switzerland and two weeks in Milan, Italy. GATEway Classic Italy for Upper School students is also in its inaugural year and will kick off this summer. For more information about the GATEway programs, call Glen Turf at 305.779.7243. If interested in learning more about a scholarship, contact Sheryl Piper at 305.779.7273.

Class of 2017 Giving A new tradition was established when Country Day dedicated a beautiful bronze sculpture, created by Octavio Cuellar, to honor the Class of 2017 and senior families who participated in Annual Giving. Seniors and their families were asked to make a gift to Annual Giving as part of this inaugural tradition of the Senior Sculpture. This unique artwork was placed on the front patio of the new Center for the Arts. With their gifts, our senior families helped raise an additional $98,000 for Annual Giving. Thank you for making history and starting a new tradition together!

7500 Club

Under the Stars at Faena

“People are coming to the Faena District for its Art Centre, to its hotels, from all over the world. It’s a transformational force, not just for Miami but for the whole region.” – Financial Times The same is true for our 7500 Club members. Without their dedication to Miami Country Day School, we would not see the transformational change of the Annual Giving Campaign and thus the impact that those dollars have on our children’s school. It was the vision of Julie Pronesti, Trustee, Annual Giving Chair and Founding Dean of the 7500 Club, to host the 7500 Club celebration at Faena. Julie toasted to the incredible 7500 Club members during the magic hour at sunset, sharing, “The 7500 Club is a success because each and every one of you. You have made a significant impact on our school. Our gifts represent 55% of the Annual Giving Campaign and Tom and I can’t thank you enough.” Members continued to mingle in a private roped off setting behind Damien Hirst’s Gilded Mammoth while sipping on champagne and tasting delectable treats from the famous Poa Restaurant. It was a beautiful evening under the stars to celebrate the generosity of our school’s philanthropic leaders.

The Palm Society

An Evening at the Four Seasons Members of the Palm Society were treated to an evening at the Four Seasons Hotel Miami where they experienced an eclectic paradise alive with art deco architecture and an exciting fusion of South and Central American, Caribbean and American influences. Donors were greeted by Dr. Davies and hosts, Gigi and Jeff Jeffries, parents of Jeff, 8th grade, and Juliette, 5th grade. Gigi volunteers her time throughout the year as the Annual Giving Lower School Chair and encourages fellow parents to give back to Country Day. Gigi shared, “we are proud to be loyal members of the Palm Society. For our family, this means supporting the strategic leadership of our school, providing opportunities for our amazing teachers, and creating the most meaningful learning environment for our children.” Thank you to the Jeffries Family and to our Palm Society members for your commitment to giving and your dedication to our school’s philanthropy.

GIVESDAY 2016

T

he Annual Giving Team rallied together and celebrated its 6th Annual GivesDay on December 1, 2016. Parent volunteers and their children promoted GivesDay with signs and flyers during drop off to encourage families to participate in Annual Giving. Volunteers, including James Bergman, who dressed as Sammy the Spartan, spent the remainder of the day in the Alumni Boardroom for the annual GivesDay phon-a-thon. Thank you to GivesDay chairs, Alex Berman and Caryn Lubetsky for their leadership, and the many Annual Giving Volunteers and families who made such an impact in a single day!

“2016 GivesDay was full of fun and excitement for the entire MCDS community. Families were greeted in the morning by Sammy the Spartan and volunteers spent the rest of the day sharing the amazing opportunities the annual campaign provides for every student every day. By the end of GivesDay 2016, the team raised $76,000 to keep the magic alive on our campus and the entire community gained a better understanding of the integral part the annual giving campaign plays in the future of MCDS.” – Caryn Lubetsky “GivesDay was a huge success. Sammy the Spartan helped us encourage the students and parents to support our Annual campaign and really make a difference for our school. It’s a fun morning letting everyone know about the power of giving.”– Alexandra Bergman

THEATER NAMED IN HONOR OF

DR. JOHN DAVIES December 7 was a special night in the history of our school. During The John Davies Cultural Arts Series featuring the amazing New Orleans’ Preservation All Stars Jazz ensemble, Gerald W. Moore ’68 announced that The Moore Family and The Garner Foundation are increasing their support of the Campaign for the Arts by $500,000 for a total gift of $1.5 million. With this additional gift, they are recognizing Dr. John Davies and his legacy by naming the Theater in his honor. Students tudents had the opportunity to meet with the members of the Preservation All Stars ensemble. Concert Jazz Band student musicians joined with the ensemble for a Master Class, and Middle School students had the opportunity to have a Q & A with the ensemble members.

A reflection from Terry Alfonso, Director of Arts Education and Programs In the many meetings with the trustees, and in particular the Buildings and Grounds Committee, I was impressed with the commitment and expertise of the volunteer members. In the Owner-Architect-Contractor meetings, the expertise and advocacy shared by Chair Bud Farrey, was integral to the successful outcome of our beautiful Center for the Arts. Having known Bud first as the father of his delightful and talented Amanda (Class of 1994), I have long been moved by the commitment of the Farrey family to Miami Country Day, even well past Amanda’s graduation. Many times Bud questioned expenditures, quality of work, timeliness and the myriad of markers that make a building project a success, all with the school’s best interests at the core. The synergy forged in this project was absolutely the key to completing the Center for the Arts. The vision of Head of School, John Davies, the input from teachers, the commitment of the Board of Trustees and Campaign Chair, Gerald W. Moore ’68, the Office of Philanthropy’s tenacity, and the expert determination and leadership of our COO, Gary Butts, in seeing the vision to completion, made the Center for the Arts a true MCDS tour du force! The hours that went into our labor of love are incalculable at this point. Miami Country Day has been forever changed; its program elevated; its students inspired; because of the efforts of all involved.

On Thursday, May, 4, over 350 guests spent the evening at Miami Country Day School to see the curtain rise on the highly anticipated Center for the Arts. It was a magnificent evening that celebrated Arts Education at Miami Country Day School. Guests enjoyed live performances by Miami City Ballet School, The French Horn Collective, Lauren Shapiro, and City Theater. “Opening Night” kicked off with the unveiling of the school’s newest sculpture, MCDS a la Indiana. This special piece was created by the Head of School, Dr. John Davies, and was inspired by pop artist, Robert Indiana, and Indiana’s iconic LOVE sculpture. The sculpture, which sits in the circle outside the Center for the Arts, is 7' high x 7' wide x 39” deep. It is constructed in metal, fiberglass and epoxy paint and fabricated by Haligon Fine Arts. Following the unveiling, guests were led into the 630-seat Theater for performances by prominent Miami Country Day alumnae who have made their career in the arts. Jacqueline Jove ’04, violinist and graduate of Yale University; Sandra Hamaoui ’11, soprano and graduate of San Francisco Conservatory of Music; and Navi Rawat ’95, actress and graduate of New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. The beautiful program ended with a wonderful performance by the Class of 2017 musicians and members of Country Day’s Contemporary Music Ensemble, 21 Hearts, One Beat. The evening served to honor donors to the Campaign. Following the performances in the theater, guests toured the Center with faculty tourguides and hosts in the art classrooms, drama rooms, dance studio, stagecraft room, music halls and student art gallery. Entertainment and unique food stations by Joy Wallace catering wrapped up the evening.

The Center for the Arts is a project that resulted from a $16.5 Million Capital Campaign for Miami Country Day School, in which more than 500 donors, including trustees, parents, alumni, grandparents, faculty and staff, contributed to the campaign. The building itself is a 35,000 square foot facility that is now home to performance venues, gallery space, and classrooms for a wide-range of arts programs including music, drama, dance, fine arts, ceramics, and digital arts. Students ages three through 12th grade are now able to utilize and enjoy the Center for the Arts to explore and develop skills required for their futures. For the school, the arts are not an extracurricular. They are essential to the school’s Mission. As a non-profit independent school, philanthropy is the catalyst for such endeavors as the Center for the Arts. The school’s Board of Trustees started exploring this idea five years ago and broke ground January 2015. In October 2016, the progress was celebrated with the traditional Topping Off ceremony. A special thank you to the Garner Moore Family, who led the funding with an initial gift of $1 million.

The John Davies Cultural Arts Series Inaugural Season One of Miami Country Day’s goals upon completion of the Center for the Arts was to create unique opportunities for the Greater Miami Shores and the Greater Miami community to utilize all that the building has to offer. With the school’s commitment to community outreach, it was announced that the school would host visiting artists, performers, and thought leaders in the Center for our greater community to enjoy. Thus, was the birth of the John Davies Cultural Arts Series. Dr. Davies has long been an advocate of the arts, and is an artist in his own right. His Robert Indiana-inspired sculpture sits outside the Center for the Arts. As his 32-year commitment to Miami Country Day comes to an end, the Series was born and will live on for years to come. A special thanks to Title Sponsors, Bal Harbour Shops and Whitman Family Development.
