Cars for a Cure set for Main Street on April 10 raises funds to fight cancer The Miami Lakes Cars for a Cure is back and it’s shaping up to look better than last year’s event. At 10 a.m. on Sunday, April 10 on Main Street, about 170 classic cars will be on display as part of a fund-raiser to benefit the University of Miami Sylvester Cancer Center and honor the memory of former Vice Mayor Roberto Alonso, who had an affinity for vintage model automobiles. This year’s event will see more food vendors including Sports Grill and Geradino’s to serve up some of great dishes for participants admiring the classic vehicles, said Roberto Alonso Jr., the event’s organizer. “The big key this year is to see more Miami Lakes restaurants offering more options for food,” he said. “We wanted to see more vendors and big corporations for the fund-raiser.” Alonso said 100 percent of the proceeds will go to the University of Miami Sylvester Cancer Center. He said he hopes to have a doctor from the Cancer Center to speak about the deadly disease, as the goal is to make the event a big outreach for cancer awareness. In addition, the event will fea-

Always At Your Side hosts community forum to promote use of R.A.M.P. medical forms Always At Your Side Adult Day Care, in cooperation with Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, is hosting a special event at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 13, to inform Miami Lakes residents about R-A.M.P.“Rescue-Allergies, Medications, Past Medical History.” Always At Your Side director Alexandra Alonso said the purpose of the event is to encourage people to understand that “Every Minute Counts” and the importance of having medical history and a list of current medications available to provide to Fire Rescue personnel. According to MDFR Battalion Chief Abel Fernandez, “When emergencies happen, every minute counts. Having your medical history - including what prescribed medicines you are taking - written out and available when a paramedic arrives can make a difference. “If the patient can’t tell us, and the family doesn’t know, the next best thing is to have the information written down ahead of time including all medications, aller-

Town Council approves mail Run with Danny benefits Cystic Fibrosis ballot for May 17 regarding proposed charter amendments By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff The fate of Miami Lakes’ bureaucracy now lies in the hands of residents after the Town Council set an election date for voters to amend the city’s charter or keep it in tact. The May 17 mail-in ballot election will determine if residents want to shake up their government based on the suggested changes made by the Miami Lakes Charter Revision Commission, which submitted its final report and election cycle to council members last week.

A Look Inside:

About 17,000 registered voters would be asked to change certain charter provisions or retain it through a paper ballot and subsequently mail in their votes. At a March 16 special meeting, council members, on a 5-1 vote, accepted the proposed amendments and the commission’s choice for the May special election despite some residents’ entreaties to select November to give them enough time to scrutinize the possible changes. Mayor Michael Pizzi cast the sole dissenting vote and Council-

Charter mail-in ballot set for May 17 (Continued from Page 1) member Tony Lama was traveling on business. According to some residents, the proposed charter changes will polarize the town, as they believed it was politically motivated against the mayor and his reelection bid in November, but other residents said a new document on how the bureaucracy should be run would root out corruption, nix the bickering among lawmakers and bring the town more in line with a council-manager form of government. If residents reinstate the proposed run-off elections, they would change the course of the town’s November election in which candidates would need at least 51 percent of the votes to avoid a two-week showdown to be declared the winner. So far, 12 candidates are running for mayor and two council seats. Some residents embrace bringing back a run-off election because they want the winners to be elected by a majority, while others say

it would cost the financially vulnerable town more money with the addition of the mayor’s lawsuits against Miami Lakes. At the special meeting, some residents appeared lukewarm over the opportunity to vote on any charter changes and questioned the timing of the meeting and election, saying the proposed amendments attached to the agenda weren’t made available on the town’s website until less than 24 hours before the meeting. They said they needed more time to review the committee’s proposals and urged council members to choose the ballot for November and for a better voter turn out. David Bennett, who chaired the Miami Lakes Charter Revision Commission, said a November election may cause “ballot fatigue” considering the rash of questions and constitution amendments for voters to decide on during the presidential election. “A mail-in ballot gives residents time to read and understand the questions,” he said.

The proposed charter amendment to require the entire Town Council pick Miami Lakes’ next town manager and city attorney with public input instead of the mayor didn’t sit well with some residents as well. Pizzi tried to convince his colleagues to pick November for the charter amendments vote, meaning the run-off election wouldn’t take effect until 2018 if residents approve to bring it back. Pizzi, Councilmembers Ceasar Mestre and Manny Cid and Slaton are running for mayor in November. But council members shot down his request despite a sevenminute speech on voting against the resolution since residents “didn’t receive adequate notice of the meeting and the agenda under the Citizens Bill of Rights.” Town Attorney Raul Gastesi disageed with Pizzi’s notion that the meeting was not advertised in a timely manner. “The date of the meeting was set a week in advance,” Gastesi said. “There is no notice problem here.” Mestre accused Pizzi of delaying the process and conceivably devising a scheme using rhetoric to get residents to speak in favor or against legislation that benefits him. “You’re very good at setting things up for council members to vote a certain way,” Mestre said. A complete guide to the mail-in ballot and all the charter questions will be included in the April 15 circulation of The Miami Laker.

Council votes to renew United Soccer Club’s long term deal David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff Miami Lakes United Soccer Club has won many tournaments and championships throughout Florida and elsewhere. But the community oriented organization scored perhaps its biggest victory in its 20-year history last week when the Town of Miami Lakes rejected an unsolicited bid from another soccer club to run the recreational and travel team programs at Royal Oaks Park, and in return pay the town about $53,000 a year for maintenance of the play fields. At the March 1 regular Town Council meeting, members of the United Soccer Club, coaches and parents, urged lawmakers to keep their word and draft a long-term agreement to allow the boys and girls soccer teams to remain in Miami Lakes, a deal that would include using the field at Royal Oaks Park. The teams were forced to use a park facility in Palm Springs North for their practices after fitness experts and their clients occupied most of the space at Royal Oaks Park without an agreement with the town. Town Manager Alex Rey and his staff were working on a fiveyear deal for lawmakers’ approval in May when Soccer Development Group (SDG) submitted an unsolicited bid to bring its Boca Soccer Schools to Miami Lakes, conceivably pushing the Miami Lakesbased program out of town. To sweeten the deal, SDG offered Miami Lakes $53,000 to pay for maintenance of the park and background checks for coaches and volunteers, a town policy to keep kids safe while playing organized sports in the parks. For maintenance, the town has to absorb about $400,000 a year from the municipal budget, Rey said. The Miami Lakes Soccer Club, a non-profit organization, pays the town about $6,000 a year. Rey broached SDG’s unsolicited bid at the council meeting for lawmakers to decide on which direction his staff should take. “Option A is tell them ‘thank you very much for this proposal but we are not interested’ and continue with what we have started,” Rey said. “Or option B, the proposal looks interesting enough that we open it and see if anybody else is interested on what they can contribute financially and how to run the program that best serve the interests of residents.” Council members chose option A. “We made a commitment to support the soccer club in the long term as long as they are taking care of our children in the community,” said Mayor Michael Pizzi. “I will not pull the rug out from underneath the children and coaches in the soccer club because someone wants to write a big check.”

Councilmember Manny Cid, whose two sons play at the soccer club, said competitive bidding is good but decided to support an agreement with the Miami Lakesbased organization. “Competition is good but I’m going with option A,” said Cid, who coached a team last season. “Thank you very much for the proposal but I am not interested.” Councilmember Tim Daubert said the Miami Lakes United Soccer Club can pitch in and clean up Royal Oaks Park to help save the town money for the park’s maintenance. He said it can be a similar project to the Young Marines adopting Miami Lakes Drive as part of the group’s clean-up efforts. “Maybe it’s something the soccer club can do to help the town,” said Daubert, a former U.S. Marine. In other Town Council news: • Council members gave their final approval on an ordinance changing the town’s land development code to allow for alternative roofing materials attached to single-family and two-family properties where that material simulates barrel tile or flat tile. • Council members approved a resolution to urge the Miami-Dade County School Board to refrain from having students living west of I-75 attending Bob Graham Education Center in an effort to alleviate overcrowding at the facility. • Lawmakers approved an resolution to create a Miami Lakes Sports Hall of Fame Committee. The committee will be put in charge of reviewing the nominations of inductees and recommending the finalists consistent with the town’s criteria of who should be enshrined at the new Miami Lakes Optimist Park Clubhouse.

Governor Rick Scott vetoes Miami Lakes drainage grants postponing West Lakes relief Florida Governor Rick Scott vetoed $256 million of line-item projects state lawmakers added to the $82 million budget that passed on the last week of 2016 the Legislative Session, including $400,000 for Miami Lakes’ West Lakes Drainage Improvements project. The allocated funds, obtained through the efforts of State Representatives Manny Diaz Jr. and Jose Oliva, and Miami Lakes Councilmembers Nelson Rodriguez, Ceasar Mestre, Frank Mingo, Manny Cid and Vice Mayor Tim Daubert, was set aside for critical drainage upgrades to ensure the town could continue working on the next three phases of the project. The West Lakes community continues to be adversely impact-

ed by flooding events, with rainwater reaching residential garages and covering streets and sidewalks. The area has suffered various flooding and is addressed as a priority project in the town’s Storm Water Master Plan. But with Scott’s veto, the town would have to wait for the next Legislative Session or apply for a grant to finish the work. “I went to Tallahassee in February to lobby our legislators to fund the canal project,” Rodriguez said. “Representatives Diaz and Oliva along with Senator Rene Garcia worked very hard to get the canal project on the Governor’s desk. It's disappointing that surrounding cities received funding for their projects and the Miami Lakes project was vetoed by the governor.”

Main Street Banner Art contest winners featured in special exhibit A special exhibition was held on Main Street on March 9 honoring the winners of the 3rd annual Main Street Banner Art Contest. In attendance were students and their families, along with area school teachers and administrators, who celebrated the unveiling of the winning banners along Main Street. The evening was made possible by the Main Street Merchants, The Graham Companies, The Miami Laker, and Artist & Craftsman Supply. Each student received new art supplies as well as gifts from LA Sweetz and Cobb Theater. During the presentation, Andrea Graham Rechichi, Cus-

tomer and Corporate Relations manager for The Graham Companies, discussed how, when looking at the artwork, “We are reminded that that we each can make a difference, whether it be small actions of helping the elderly, donating our hair for wigs for cancer patients, holding a lemonade stand to raise money for a favorite charity, packing up trash in public places, embracing each other’s differences and cultures, or planting a community garden. No matter what - they all Make A Difference. “Our youth in the community need to understand that their actions can make an impact and if

they follow the activities represented in their artwork, I think we are in good hands,” she said. Over 200 students submitted artwork from Miami Lakes K-8 Center, Bob Graham Education Center, Miami Lakes Middle School, Hialeah Miami Lakes Senior High, Barbara Goleman Senior High and American Senior High schools. Twenty-six students’ artwork was selected to be displayed along Main Street on the light pole banners that will be on display through June. Selected original artwork will be located at 6816 Main Street in the Keyes window boxes.

Councilmember Manny Cid attends NLC committee meeting in D.C. Miami Lakes Councilmember Manny Cid, who was recently appointed to the National League of Cities (NLC) 2016 Finance, Administration and Integovernmental Relations Committee, attended the group’s city conference in Washington D.C. last month. During his first meeting, Cid said the committee members discussed the nation’s federal advocacy agenda of protecting tax exemptions for municipal bonds and comprehensive tax reform. Cid also had the opportunity to discuss the town’s zip code issue with the United States Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Government Affairs. The two committees, which members include U.S. Senators John McCain (R-Arizona) and Rand Paul (R-Kentucky), have joined the investigation into the United States Postal Service’s refusal to grant Miami Lakes its own zip code, Cid said. Cid said an independent zip code for Miami Lakes means saving on premium costs on auto insurance for town residents and help with branding and economic development issues. “Both committee are still on the issue,” he said. “They were not happy the post office hasn’t provided us with the information. We are moving the ball forward on an independent Miami Lakes zip code.”

Foreign Trade Zone approval for M. Lakes company Miami Lakes-based Miami International Freight Solutions (MIFS), may be headquartered in the town but with the federal approval to become a Foreign Trade Zone (FTZ) operator the business the firm conducts is farreaching. With the FTZ approval under their belt, MIFS, a family-owned business, can provide significant financial benefits to businesses that import and export items such as products, equipment or parts, by

reducing or eliminating the duties/fees for products shipped internationally. Companies that utilize such a designation typically streamline customs procedures making the work of importing and exporting efficient and fast. The management team behind MIFS, president Leonard Roberts, executive vice president George Creech, COO Jose Aguirre, and Operations vice president Chuck Siceloff, share over 25 years of experience in imports and exports.

They decided on Miami Lakes as their headquarters because of the convenience the location offers as a midway point between the Port of Miami, and the underutilized Port of Ft. Lauderdale, both of which they work with. “Doral is congested, said Aguierre. “Clients want a hometown feel instead of a cookie cutter business. We can supply that by being, conveniently, in Miami Lakes. MIFS receives all sorts of freight, including local, interstate, and international via means of truck, railroad, air and ocean. As the name aptly describes, MIFS offers freight solutions, now with the added benefit of FTZ approval. “We are essentially travel agents for freight, said Creech. The MIFS building, which is 200,000 square feet, boasts an array of products from a myriad of industries, some of which are held in storage for years, such as airplane equipment, and others which may leave the location to travel down the street for an Amazon purchase. While they house a number of products they do not store perishables or temperaturecontrolled items. MIFS has been a long time operator of a Class 3 and Class 8 Bonded warehouse as well as operating a Container Freight Station (CFS), a Type 14 In-Bond Export Consolidation (IBEC), and having a strong domestic warehouse and distribution operation. For more information on MIFS, visit www.mifs4u.com. MIFS is located at 14100 N.W. 60 Avenue in Miami Lakes.

Main Street Players present Stage Kiss opening April 22 for three-week performance run at the Main Street Playhouse Stage Kiss, a hilarious comedy by Sarah Ruhl, a Pulitzer Prize finalist for her acclaimed The Clean House, will hit the stage at Miami Lakes’ local theatre, the Main Street Playhouse at 6766 Main Street, from April 22 to May 15, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. The play, directed by Marina Pareja of FIU and produced by Dennis Lyzniak, is the story of She

and He, two actors in their midforties, who are unknowingly reunited in a very bad stage play after a twenty year separation, with She being married. After sharing numerous onstage kisses, their off-stage relationship is rekindled which throws their loved ones for a loop. In a comedic twist to this love story, despite the efforts of the playwright and director, who is desper-

ate for a hit show, the 1930’s play is awful. Stage Kiss is a theatregoer’s delight of a play. Tickets can be purchased online at www.mainstreetplayers.com or at the door with senior, student, and military discounted rates at $20 per ticket, and the standard tickets at $25. Goleman’s Izabella Hernandez on a ‘one-girl’ campaign to help bring an end to all litter By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Izabella Hernandez, a self-proclaimed superhero nerd, has a cartoon version of herself embracing a globe on cards that read: Help End All Litter. Though a lofty goal, Hernandez, a high schooler at Barbara Goleman Senior High School, is ready to do just that. Through her work with www.seemybeach.com where she would film on location for tourist attractions in Florida, Hernandez came face to face with the unfortunate reality of massive amounts of litter during a videoshoot in which the litter appeared in the frame from every angle. Startled by this fact and unnerved by how much litter sat along Florida’s coast, Hernandez embarked on a goal to eliminate litter. Similar to how the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts have troops all throughout the nation, Hernandez is attempting to create pockets of awareness fueled by students everywhere to attack litter on all coasts. With the help of the staff at www.seemybeach.com, and her parents, Hernandez organized a cleanup mission in the Florida Keys wherein transportation and equipment was provided for a beach, bay and mangrove cleanup. Hernandez managed to receive the help of corporate sponsors such as A1A media, HNO Productions and the Hard Rock Cafe. The local Monroe County Sheriff deputies and members of the Upper Keys and Key Largo Rotary were also on location participating in the cleanup. Additionally, Ashley Lawrence of

IZABELLA HERNANDEZ Animal Planet’s Gator Boys made an appearance and cleaned alongside Hernandez. Despite a low turnout at the first organized cleanup, a member of Key Largo School noted that the school would be the first chapter of “Help End All Litter” and will be doing regular cleanups. Hernandez is continuing forward with determination to see to it that students of all ages, including herself, are doing everything they can to eliminate litter. More organized cleanups in the local area are planned and will be announced via the website at www.helpendalllitter.com. “We kids did not create the litter problem, but this is our world and our future so it is up to us to fix it,” said Hernandez.

Snelling The Miami Laker staff The Lindeman Group is a one stop location for people who are seeking professional assistance in the areas of real estate, real estate law, title, escrow and insurance, and the company can be found in the heart of Miami Lakes. The company, also known as Advocate Law Groups of Florida Lindeman Title and Escrow, is a combination of Jon Lindeman’s law firm and the real estate experience of his wife, Ephigenia Lindeman. The company recently moved to its new location at 5707 N.W. 158 Street to better serve their clients with ample space for its expansion; it was previously located at 15100 N.W. 67 Avenue for more than five years. The company, which has eight offices in Florida and two outside the Sunshine State, is a full service title closing company that can provide its clients with the necessary tools they need to help close a real estate deal. For service title, lawsuit and commercial and residential real estate settlements and escrow, the company is made up of attorneys, paralegals and significant support staff providing a broad range of title services with efficiency and professionalism at reasonable rates. “It’s placing everything under one roof,” Ephigenia Lindeman said. As an attorney, Jon Lindeman said the idea to combine the services to form one company came

EPHIGENIA LINDEMAN from judges and other lawyers. “The name Lindeman is known in the court system, and judges and lawyers suggested I branch out to reach out and help other customers.” As a realtor with a wealth of experience, Ephigenia Lindeman said the company has an obligation to protect investors, including making sure they are not being taken advantage of. “We have a strong legal staff to make sure our clients are getting the best opportunities for them,” she said. The company also puts its expertise to use to defend their customers against foreclosures. In the past six years, Ephigenia Lindeman said her company has helped 6,000 people save their homes who were being taken advantage of for loan issues. “We gave them other opportunities that they would not have

With 15-2 record, Goleman’s baseball squad looks forward to District playoffs this month By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff Wielding their bats that have belted them to a 15-2 record, Barbara Goleman High’s baseball team wishes the 6A District playoffs started this week. “We would love to play the district tomorrow,” said head coach Jose Lopez. “We are undefeated in district play.”

But the Gators will have to settle for closing out the regular season and competing in the GMAC before the district playoffs start in the third week of April. By then, the Gators will know if they have won their 10th district championship in the past 14 years. Their district game against then-second place Jackson High could be a sign of things to come

in the district playoffs, a scintillating affair that had Gators’ fans on the edge of their seats. Goleman trailed the Generals 40 in the fifth inning before orchestrating a 5-4 come-from-behind victory that kept the Gators atop the district. Miami Springs (9-6) and Jackson (7-6) are seeking vengeance against Goleman in their final regular season match-ups this month. Albeit anxious, Lopez said his team is not focusing on the postseason while they still have the Golden Hawks and the Generals to play to close out the regular season. Senior first baseman Brandon Paez hopes to keep his bat hot during the last stretch of the regular season and playoffs. He’s batting .500 with 27 RBI, 26 hits and one dinger. Center fielder Thomas Hernandez is also on fire for the Gators, hitting .519 with 16 RBI, 18 hits and one home run. Junior third baseman Ramid Alvarez is hitting .419 with 16 RBI, 18 hits and one dinger. Goleman’s precocious pitchers Mario Fernandez (1-0, 3.11 ERA in nine innings), and Adrian Garrastazu (4-2, 1.26 ERA in 18 innings) are keeping the opposing batters off balance, Lopez said. Kevin Perez, who plays catcher and pitcher, is used to tossing his change-ups to confuse batters. Goleman’s real test against Broward’s St. Thomas Aquinas last week was canceled due to a tornado warning.

Webster, Morris, Van Dyke, and Rodriguez were on hand for the ceremony held in front of the entire student body while Frost and Reddick were represented by family and friends. Athletic director and head football coach Joseph Zaccheo spoke about each of the alumni and their careers as video highlights from their Pace, college, and NFL days played onscreen. Former Pace head football coach Mario Smith, who graduated from Pace with Frost and Reddick in 1992, presented a $500 check for the Spartan football program. Rodriguez, a member of the 2000 University of Miami National Championship team and now UM’s Director of Player Development, talked about his pride in Pace and encouraged everyone to follow their passions. Van Dyke, who signed with the Atlanta Falcons on March 15, thanked God for putting his Pace coaches and teachers in his life. “We have had six Pace alumni on NFL active rosters, including three currently in the NFL,” said Pace principal Ana Garcia. “It is something that we are so proud of that we wanted to share with the world and use it to motivate our current students.” The NFL awarded Pace a golden NFL football bearing Webster’s name to commemorate the school’s induction. Webster presented the ball to Garcia at the end of the ceremony by throwing it to her as the crowd cheered.

Bob Graham’s John Brady named Teacher of the Year U.S. History teacher John Brady was recently named Bob Graham Education Center’s 20152016 Teacher of the Year. In his eleventh year as a teacher at the school, Brady’s philosophy for teaching his 8th graders is for his students to know more about the subject than he did leaving middle school and high school. He feels the United States has fallen back in understanding how the American system works and how the country got to that point. “The subject matters,” he said. “I want my students to see it as easy as I see it. Yes, there is a purpose to why we study history and how we can learn from it when it repeats itself, but also how these people are just so interesting because they are complex human beings.” Brady added: “On the first day of school, I ask my students what they think they won’t like about U.S. History? The answer I get the most is they don’t like dates. I tell them neither do I so I write the word ‘History’ nice and big on the board and tell them to underline the word ‘story’ in it. That’s what it’s about for me.” Brady has also had the pleasure of working with the students in BGEC’s Bobcat Law Society. He said his Political Science degree from Florida International University has served him well in helping his colleagues in the program teach and prepare the students in the classroom and for competitions.

Local schools included in new GOB projects Swift progress on the GOB program implementation continues. At its meeting of March 9, the Miami-Dade School Board approved various GOB projects with a total investment value of approximately $34.4 million. The General Obligation Bond approved overwhelmingly by the voters

in 2012 is being implemented to renovate and replace schools, expand student capacity, enhance safety, and provide technology upgrades. Three of the projects commissioned by the Board for design and pre-construction services include Hialeah Miami Lakes Senior High

School, with a total project allocation of $6.4 million, Miami Springs Middle School, with a total project budget of $5.4 million, and Gratigny Elementary School, with a total project budget of $4.7 million.

JOHN BRADY Brady said every teacher should have the honor of working with such dedicated students, and he expressed his appreciation and gratitude to the staff and faculty for their love and support since his tenure at the school. “It’s the best place I’ve ever worked at,” he said. He also extended his gratitude to the students. ‘I have learned as much from them as they have hopefully learned from me,” he said. He thanked his parents for helping him achieve his goal. “I owe it all to them for anything I have ever accomplished in my professional and personal life,” he said.

Pace High graduating senior Maya Lora offers poignant parting thoughts By Maya Lora Special to The Miami Laker Most 14-year-old freshmen stepping onto a high school campus for the first time have a very different idea of love than one they will eventually understand. The only taste they’ve had of it has been through romance movies they binge watch on the weekends, where “I love you” means a kiss or a proposal. After being at Pace for four years, I have stumbled onto a different concept of love that I personally find much more fulfilling. There is something about the energy on the school grounds that can teach even the hardest of hearts what love feels like. Coming to school feels like coming home. The family you find here is not limited to your class. You find love in every corner of the school and in everyone you meet, from the teachers to the counselors to your classmates to the staff. At Pace, you are never alone. If you need to talk to someone, you don’t have to wander far to find an ear willing to hear you out. Perhaps you prefer “Cafecito” with Celita, or Oreos with the guidance counselors, or Krispy Kreme doughnuts in the computer

lab. It doesn’t matter who you end up connecting with, because you are bound to click with someone. It is impossible to go to Pace and not feel the love in the air. There is someone who knows you, and cares about you just a few steps away at any time of the day. Pace has taught me how to love. Pace has taught me to think outside of my self, to reach out to anyone who I feel needs it. In middle school, if I saw someone crying in the hallway, I would have gone to get a teacher. Now, I will slide down the wall, sit next to them, pull them onto my shoulder, and just be there for them. I don’t have to know their name to love them. Love is what our school was

MAYA LORA built on. Love is what our school runs on. Pace means Love and I am so proud to be a part of a school like that.

Barbara Goleman Senior High MLK-8 Center student Grace Science Honor Society revives Urbina honored with District’s Gator Recycling Program ‘Random Act of Kindness’ award By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff The Goleman Gator Recycling Program has been revived after nearly two years of being out of commission. The revival was a combined effort of the Science National Honor Society (SNHS) and Key Club. Between both groups, each taking half of the school, they are responsible for collecting recyclables from around the school on Wednesdays after class. Each classroom has a designated recycling bin and teachers are asked to put the bins outside their door on Wednesdays for pick up by the students. Announcements and reminders are sent out periodically to keep the program running. Science teacher, Fred Matter, believes the recycling program enriches the students’ scope of learning. “It certainly raises awareness

about issues facing the planet but more importantly it allows them to do something to help the situation,” said Matter. “Many times the high school students are aware of so many problems facing society and the planet and feel hopeless. This allows them to be a part of the solution and hopefully instill lifelong practices to help protect the planet.” In addition to recycling, the SNHS is organizing a student wide science tutoring program and members are maintaining the plant area near the front of the school. Key Club has joined in the maintenance for this school year. “We are looking to expand the native plant area and rear plants to continue replacing exotics on school grounds and possibly expand to homeowners in the community,” said Matter. “If successful this could make corridors for butterflies and native birds that depend on those plants for food.”

By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Grace Urbino performed a random act of kindness with 100 post-it notes and marker. She wrote messages like “you’re better than a triple scoop ice cream with sprinkles,” “your hair looks great” and “you’re special just the way you are” on the notes and posted them all around her school. Her reasoning? To brighten her classmates’ day. “Insecurity starts in middle school,” said Urbino. “I know a lot of friends going through that and even though I’m not friends with all the people in my school, there are probably a lot of them that feel insecure. I wrote 100 things and posted them on the walls of the school and my classmates were really happy to see them. Some took them to keep.” Urbino, who initially performed her act of kindness anonymously, was honored by the Miami Lakes K-8 faculty and staff that moved her post it notes into a more permanent fixture - positive posters now featured throughout the school to “spread kind loving words” as one reads. The school’s Trust Counselor, Loretta Garcia, nominated Urbina

for the district-wide award for “random acts of kindness.” Urbina won for the middle school division and was accompanied to the School Board meeting in early March by her parents and sister, alongside the school’s principal Carlos Salcedo and Garcia. “It is a pleasure to nominate an amazing eighth grader for thinking of others at a time when most teenagers think of themselves,” said Garcia. “Grace thought of what teens go through emotionally and how they could benefit from kind words. She is truly deserving through her expressions of the core values needed to be nominated for acts of kindness.”

The program starts with fellowship and coffee at 6:30 p.m. A large group meeting starts at 7 p.m. with Biblically-based teachings and music. At 8 p.m., small sharing groups are offered based on specific issues. The small groups are divided into men’s and women’s groups and are safe places to give and receive positive

support for individual needs. Celebrate Recovery®, founded by Rick Warren (New York Times best-selling author of “The Purpose Driven Life”), and John Baker, has achieved gratifying results by offering “wholeness” to people everywhere. The program is not simply to recover from past sins and hurts, but to become Christ-like in character. Miami Lakes United Methodist Church pastor Stuart Bodin emphasizes, “When people hear the word ‘recovery’ they think it only involves those struggling

with drugs and alcohol. There are many people who are also dealing with overeating, sexual addition, gambling and other problems. Subsequently, more of us are experiencing first hand the pain and guilt that accompanies those struggling with addictions. This life-changing program provides a safe, anonymous environment where people can deal with their issues and change their lives.” This is an ongoing program based on Christian principles as applied to the 12 Steps and the 8 Beatitudes. The groups are run by trained leaders and offer a safe, confidential, and positive place to participate with other people looking for healing. “We are regular people looking for help with hurts, habits, or hang-ups,” said Bodin. “The program at Miami Lakes United Methodist Church is a God send and will help folks, not only in Miami Lakes, but all over northwest Miami-Dade,” said Miami Lakes Councilmember Manny Cid. “We look forward to working hand in hand with Pastor Stuart and the MLUMC congregation to help our brothers and sisters in need.” There is no financial obligation and registration is not necessary. Participants do not need to be a member or attendee of Miami Lakes United Methodist Church. For more information, call 305821-7274, or go to www.hopemlumc.com/celebraterecovery.

Former MLEC student Flavia American Senior High’s Cuervo meets Pope Francis ‘Coffeehouse’ showcases arts

FLAVIA CUERVO, a former Miami Lakes Educational Center student and current Marketing/Public Relations director at Harvard University’s Model UN, has continued to impress her alma mater with her personal and professional accomplishments. This fall Cuervo gained clearance to the Vatican to be part of a select delegation that would hear the Pope speak. During her time there, she was able to snap a selfie with him. Former classmates and teachers keep up with Cuervo’s work through Harvard’s hashtag #WorldMun2016. “Again, our kids are achieving the unimaginable,” said journalism teacher Neyda Borges.

The cafeteria at American High was transformed after lunch into the 10th annual Art Club “Coffeehouse,” an exposition of American High students’ talents in the musical, visual and culinary arts. Coffeehouse has become an annual tradition at American but it’s always a new event because, while the format has become wellknown, the actual staging and performers are always a surprise. Immediately following lunch, the Art Club students swarmed into the cafeteria with decorations, banners, musical instruments, audio equipment, food, signs, backdrops and more, turning it into “Coffeehouse: Space” for 2016. Stars, twinkling lights, alien heads and floating rockets set the stage for a wide variety of student performers, student artworks on the walls and delicious treats. Students came in, got coffee and treats, and checked out student artwork as they made their way to their seats. As student MC, Malachi Wilson welcomed the sell-out crowd to their seats, the last audio check was finishing up. The lights were low, the space Coffeehouse logo backdrop sparkled and Malachi welcomed the first performer Brandon Garland to the stage. The diverse bill featured students performing indie, rap, dance, spoken word poetry, rock and pop. The crowd enjoyed all of the performers, with large applause for many of the acts. The student performers had been selected to perform after a series of auditions, and the Art Club officers and members created all of the decora-

tions and backdrops for weeks before the event. Art teacher and Art Club sponsor Ron Laffin oversaw the production and Art teacher Kevin Murphy and some of his students also helped in creating some of the backdrops. Just before the final performer sang, assistant principal Marieyola Baptiste said “This is fantastic, just fantastic!”
