Miami Lakes hosts two zero-based budget workshops By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff The Town of Miami Lakes is hosting two zero-based budget workshops for residents to learn about the city’s plans for the 20162017 fiscal year, as council members voted to keep the same rate

for property taxes to complete several projects for beautification, while searching for additional resources to pay for other municipal services not funded in the spending plan. The workshops are scheduled for Saturday, August 20 and

NEWS AND NOTES about Miami Lakes area public and private schools opening August 22. (See Pages 18 and 19.)

Town Hall goes blue in honor of law enforcement officers

MIAMI LAKES TOWN COUNCIL, at its July regular meeting, unanimously voted to light Town Hall in blue to show support for law enforcement. In light of recent tragedies around the country, the Town encourages residents to join in on showing their support for all public safety officials. The color blue, also a symbol of peace, has become a way of remembering all departed law enforcement officers across America.

A Look Inside:

Sunday, August 21 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day at Miami Lakes Town Hall, 6601 Main Street. The workshops are prelude to the budget hearings in September, when council members will decide on a final tax rate and what projects should be funded next year. The current rate is 2.3518 mills, which is $2.3518 per $1,000 of assessed property values, and estimated to generate about $6.2 million in revenue. During the budget hearings, council members can only reduce the rate, which is an increase from $5.9 million last year. Miami Lakes, which has $15.7 million in general fund revenues for next year, is focusing on beautification and plans to spend at least $822,000 on projects for the N.W. 154 Street corridor, N.W. 67 Avenue and 138 Street, N.W. 67 Avenue and 138 Street, the West Lake Neighborhood Reforestation

Program and beautification for N.W. 87 Avenue and 170 Street. According to a budget overview with preliminary figures, about $1.8 million of services were included in the spending plan but without any funding, including $500,000 for litigation services, $292,670 for two additional police officers, $85,000 for the removal and replacement of black trees and $35,000 for youth and senior citizens programs. According to council members, some residents want the city’s services upgraded but not at their expense in the form of raising taxes. Vice Mayor Tim Daubert said it would take a tax increase to give constituents what they want. “They want their streets cleaned, their trees trimmed, no more street flooding and they want their black olive trees gone” said Daubert, who mulled raising taxes.

“At Miami Lakes Optimist Park, the baseball fields, tennis courts and basketball courts need to be repaired. No one wants to raise taxes, but I told residents if you want those things done, this is what it will cost you.” Miami Lakes would need $9.7 million to upgrade services for a new drainage system in residential areas, Miami Lakes Optimist Park, the black olive tree program and two additional police officers. Town officials will scrutinize the budget to cut unnecessary expenditures, including city contracts, and spend the money where it is needed the most. The budget hearings have been scheduled for Tuesday, September 6, at 5:01 p.m., and Tuesday, September 20, at 6 p.m. at Miami Lakes Town Hall, 6601 Main Street. The next fiscal year begins on October 1.

Vicky Bakery adds 305 Sports Talk Radio to its diverse pastry menu Vicky Bakery is famous for its authentic Cuban pastries and other quality baked goods. Now, the pastry shop has added sports talk radio to its diverse menu. Vicky Bakery is the new home of 305 Sports Talk Radio Network, a weekend sports talk radio network designed and tailored for Miami. The sports talk program kicked off on Saturday, July 30, on 880The Biz, with the return of “The Dos Amigos Show,” with Stefano Fusaro, a weekend sports anchor for NBC and Larry “The Amigo” Millian, a senior staff writer for the StateOfTheU.com. Former Dos Amigos co-host, Alan Strauss will have a creative show role, bringing a past flavor to the 2016 version of the widely popular radio program. Millian, a corporate marketing director for Vicky Bakery, broached the idea of bringing back the popular show, which he said was the country’s first bilingual

radio sports show, to the popular bakery. “It’s all powered by Vicky Bakery,” Millian said. “You can’t get more South Florida than Vicky Bakery.” He said the primary goal is to offer quality sports talk programming with cultural South Florida diversity, cover local sports teams such as the Miami Heat, Miami Dolphins and Florida Panthers. “305 Sports Talk wants to capture the diversity that is also parallel to the market that we are in,” Millian said. “The goal of the network is to capture another audience and that delivers rhetoric of Miami sports, and we can provide that on the weekend.” Millian said he was a stringer for The Miami Herald and worked in radio, which included the creation of The Dos Amigos Show. After the show was canceled, he resumed working in radio for nine years and stopped in 2013, but he stayed active in the media.

After he was hired by Vicky Bakery early this year, Millian thought bringing the sports talk show to the Bakery would be an “excellent” marketing and advertising strategy for the business. He’s hoping he can bring back some of the dynamic interviews and segments from the original show. Millian interviewed boxing legend Roberto Duran, and the former fighter’s daughter, Irichelle Duran, is one of the reporters for the network, which includes boxing news. The show, which includes a media partnership with StateOfTheU.com, also works closely with local insiders and experts, as well as partner with media outlets and sponsors to bring a unique and untapped flavor to the network. Vicky Bakery has established a stellar reputation for producing its famous authentic Cuban pastries, and a diverse menu that ranges from baked goods to sandwiches, coffee, cakes and party specials. Cuban immigrants Antonio and Gelasia Cao opened Vicky Bakery in 1972, making pastries the way they made in Cuba. They have been incredibly successful. After 20 years in four locations, the Cao family expanded the bakery to Miami Lakes, Lakes on the Green, Kendall and Cooper City. To date, the Cao family has opened up 12 Vicky Bakery locations and plans to expand in the future.

Eleven candidates qualify for four Council seats in November 8 election By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff After wrestling with his ambivalence for months over whether to run for reelection or pursue other endeavors outside the political arena, Miami Lakes Mayor Michael Pizzi has filed his papers seeking another four-year term in an uphill battle against his former foe and a current council member leading the pack in fundraising. The town’s first mayor and the catalyst for the incorporation movement, Wayne Slaton, and Councilmember Manny Cid are challenging Pizzi for the mayoral position in the November 8 general election. In all, 11 candidates, including two incumbents, are running for four seats on the Town Council. Twenty-one candidates originally filed papers to run for political office but only 11 qualified for the November election. The incumbent mayor opened up a campaign account on the last day of the qualifying period, while Cid, who has raised $43,535, and Slaton have already begun hitting the campaign trial. According to his campaign report, Slaton has loaned himself $5,000, and is using the traditional campaign of knocking on the doors of all Miami Lakes residents. Slaton, an electrical contractor, was the town’s first mayor in 2001 and won reelection in 2004. During Slaton’s first two terms, then-Councilmember Pizzi was his most vocal critic, leading him to run for mayor in 2008. Slaton decided not to seek reelection but unsuccessfully challenged Pizzi in 2012. Following Pizzi’s arrest on public corruption charges in 2013, Slaton won a special election to

replace him as mayor, but a controversial legal fight, first in the Florida Supreme Court against Governor Rick Scott, and then against Miami Lakes in the lower courts returned Pizzi to Town Hall following his 2014 acquittal. Slaton, who has lived in Miami Lakes for more than 40 years, decided not to take his case to Florida’s top court and yielded his position for Pizzi’s return, but said he would run again in 2016. Cid initially filed papers to run for his Seat 5 but changed his mind and entered the mayoral race. Council member Ceasar Mestre was forced to drop out of the mayoral race after he missed a requirement to resign from his Seat 6 10 days before the start of the qualifying period. Mestre, who had raised $40,000, including loaning himself $3,000 before leaving the mayoral race, indicated missing the requirement actually was a sigh of relief since the campaigning took a toll on spending quality time with his family. For the other Town Council races, incumbent Councilmember Nelson Rodriguez, a Coral Gables firefighter, is facing off against Xiomara Pazos, CEO and president of non-emergency medical transportation company and newcomer Alex Dehghani to keep Seat One. Pazos ran for a Town Council seat in 2014. Councilmember Tony Lama (Seat 3) is being challenged by attorney and neophyte Elizabeth Delgado. Robin Brown-Beamon, who retired following a 30 year career at Miami-Dade County, didn’t qualify to run for Seat 3, and Jose Nodal Jr., a building inspector, dropped out of the race. Lama, so far, has raised $20,477 for his campaign and Delgado mustered up $5,200.

Seat 5, which Cid gave up to run for mayor, initially drew 10 candidates, including newcomers Luis Collazo, chair of the town’s Elderly Affairs Committee, and Roberto Alonso Jr., whose father was Miami Lakes’ first vice mayor. But seven candidates either dropped their bids or failed to qualify to officially enter the race, leaving Collazo, Esther Colon, former town manager for Lauderdale by the Sea, and criminal defense attorney Nayib Hassan, to battle it out on election day. Alonso, Cynthia Beyer, Rosalina Nunez, Alejandro Sanchez, chair of the town’s Veteran’s Affairs Committee and Caridad Vasallo bowed out of the race for the vacant seat. Natalie Hope Guzman and Wendy Milanes didn’t qualify to compete against the other candidates for Seat 5. Political novice Hassan leads his group in fundraising with $13,680 followed by Colon with $6,341. If neither candidate collects 51 percent of the votes, the winner will be determined in a run-off election two weeks later. (Editor’s Note: The Miami Laker will profile Seat 1 candidates in the September 2 issue; Seat 3 candidates in the September 16 issue; Seat 5 candidates in the October 7 issue; Mayoral candidates in the October 21 issue; and recap all races and candidates in the November 4 issue.)

By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Miami Spa Month and Miami Spice are two of South Florida’s premiere luxury events that includes a host of spa specials, sweepstakes, high quality pampering and excellent choices of delectable special dining. Spa Month began July 1 and runs through August 31, while Miami Spice runs throughout August and September. Among the participating spas is The Spa at Shula’s which features products by Aveda and Eminence. The spa is offering services at $109 which include massages, body polishes, hot stones, peels, facials and aromatherapy. All services include a complimentary glass of champagne, free parking, and a full day’s use of the Shula’s Athletic Club. Additionally, Miami Spice, the city-wide restaurant promotion that showcases the very best in Miami cuisine comes to a close on September 30. A participating member in the famous Miami Spice Month is local restaurant Shula’s Steakhouse, The Original, located at 7601 Miami Lakes Drive. A dinner for two plus two Miami Spa services are available for $296, including a complimentary glass of wine after the spa

service. Reservations are recommended as seating reaches capacity on most nights. According to columnist Matt Metzler on the website Thrilllist, if you choice to dine at Shula’s Steak House, the Original, during Miami Spice, without the spa combination, you will be saving $45 over the normal costs of $90. Metzler says you won’t get your name on the wall, or a special reception with Coach Shula if you manage to complete the Spice menu, but it’s a good warm-up for the 64 oz. challenge, especially if you take down the lobster bisque ($6 upgrade), 8 oz. Times Square strip steak with grilled jumbo shrimp, and a slice of cheesecake to wrap it up. The only other Miami Lakes restaurant participating in Miami Spice is Anacapri Italian Kitchen, located at 6125 Miami Lakes Drive, in the Lake Katharine Shopping Center. roots level, by our hardworking local leagues. “While local elections are just as important as statewide races, a good deal of voters know considerably less about the local races that affect them in their own backyard. News and Notes from the Town of Miami Lakes R.A.M.P. It Up introduced to Elderly Affairs group At the May Town Council meeting, lawmakers unanimously approved R.A.M.P. It Up. An initiative of Councilmembers Nelson Rodriguez and Tony Lama, R.A.M.P. stands for Rescue, Allergies, Medications, and Past medical history. For years, fire rescue personnel have encouraged patients – especially senior citizens and their families – to have vital medical information written down in anticipation of an emergency. R.A.M.P. is a great way to transfer information to First Responders. Rodriguez, a member of the Coral Gables Fire-Rescue Department, introduced the R.A.M.P. form to members of the Town’s Elderly Affairs Committee at their August meeting. “As a Firefighter-Paramedic for

28 years, my experience shows that time is of the essence when responding to medical emergencies at home. Having medical history information nearby will save time in providing proper care for the patient,” said Rodriguez. The idea for R.A.M.P. came from Miami-Dade Fire-Rescue Chief Abel Fernandez, a local Firefighter-Paramedic and town resident. Download the form at www.miamilakes-fl.gov/ramp. Be sure to complete one form for each member of the family and place it on the refrigerator. It is imperative the form be kept up to date to ensure First Responders have the proper information in case residents are unable to provide it.

By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff Seven-year-old Arisha Sofia Ahmed received a letter that she will cherish for the rest of her life. The third grade student at Bob Graham Education Center wrote President Barack Obama in February and the commander-inchief responded five months later, making her the happiest kid in the world and the envy of her classmates when she returns to school for the new year. “I felt really happy because I was worried and sad that he wouldn’t write back,” Arisha said. “But it made me really happy he responded to my letter.” Arisha’s penned the President on her goal of one day becoming a U.S. Supreme Court Justice following the death of Justice Antonin Scalia in February. In her letter to the Obama, Arisha said she wanted to be a judge to make this country fair based on equal rights and safe. An excerpt from his letter, the President encouraged the Miami Lakes resident to pursue her dreams of becoming a public ser-

vant one day and praised her for wanting to make a difference in the world. “Wherever your future takes you, be sure to put forth your best effort in school,” Obama said in his letter. “For you to become a leader in any area, people need to have confidence in your abilities, and education is the foundation for all achievement. The best elected officials are people who find something they are good at, build a career, and learn how to organize and motivate people. No matter what career you land in, if you always work hard, give back to your community, and chase your dreams with passion, I have confidence you will do big things. I wish you all the best.” Claudia Ahmed, Arisha’s mother, said her daughter always wanted to be a judge and she demonstrates judicial-like duties at home. “She practices equal justice in the house,” Claudia Ahmed said. During a family vacation in Washington D.C., Arisha marveled at the U.S. Supreme Court Building, hoping one day to serve on the nation’s highest court.

Claudia Ahmed said she supports her daughter’s dreams of becoming a Supreme Court judge, as well as her son’s goals in life. “I will never stop her from pursuing her dreams,” she said. “Kids have minds to satisfy their curiosity and we teach them to question everything they don’t understand so they can do better the next time. When they learn something, we encourage them to pass it on. That’s what I teach them.” Arisha said she plans to share her letter and autographed pictures of Obama and the first family with her fellow students when school starts on Monday, August 22. “I will love to show them the letter the President wrote me and the pictures,” said Arisha, who’s favorite school subjects are math, science and art. “It made me a happy person.” Arisha’s mother said the President’s letter could not have come at better time. “His letter definitely inspires her right before the start of the new school year to do better,” she said.

Com. Barbara Jordan honors Summer Youth Interns Cle-Andra Rolle, a senior at Florida Memorial University majoring in biology, says her dream of becoming a doctor is a realty because of Miami-Dade County Commissioner Barbara Jordan’s Summer Youth Internship Initiative (SYII).

Rolle worked as an intern this summer at Jackson Memorial Hospital, assisting medical staff. “I saw someone being resuscitated...doctors brought them back to life,” she said. “That experience solidified it for me. I’m getting a head start on my career.”

For eight to 10 weeks, 30 students were paid to work in County government and the private sector as part of the SYII program. Students underwent an extensive interview process and were required to attend a daylong orientation session with a motivational

speaker, life coach and several entrepreneurs. Students who participated in the program were from Florida Memorial, St. Thomas University, Florida State University, Florida Atlantic University, University of Florida, Florida A&M University, Florida International University

and Spelman College. “The Summer Youth Internship Initiative was designed to give students real work experience, and our interns have made me very proud in how they have excelled in and outside of the workplace,” Jordan said.

When the new school year gets underway next week, local high school students preparing to go college might want to learn more about scholarship programs to assist them with financial aid. Some schools may offer their high-school seniors scholarship programs and other college-bound students can apply for scholarships which are being offered by outside programs. At Mater Academy, the school’s uMater Scholarship program rewards students who have succeeded both inside and outside the classroom, and who may not be able to attend college without financial assistance. The program is open to all high school seniors from Mater Academy affiliated schools who plan to enroll in an accredited U.S. four-year college or university. Besides earning good grades, to qualify for the program, students must be dedicated, a leader, a volunteer worker, a college-bound and community-minded individual. Students must also provide a letter of recommendation from teachers and administrators at the school and a well-written and creative essay. Students attending American High, Barbara Goleman High, Hialeah Miami Lakes High, Hialeah Gardens High, and Mater Lakes Academy can apply for other scholarship awards in academics and athletics during the 2016-2017 school.

The John H. Peavy, Jr., Scholarship is a monetary award in the amount of $4,500 or more granted to graduating seniors in high school. The scholarship program was named after Peavy, who served as a teacher, counselor and an assistant principal at Miami Northwestern High from 1952 to 1988. Students can also apply for the Give Kids a Chance Scholarship, a program which awards high school seniors desiring to continue their education but need additional financial assistance to do so. Recipients are eligible for additional awards given they maintain full-time status and meet academic requirements. The College Assistance Program (CAP) provides scholarships to Miami-Dade County Public School graduates who have exhausted all avenues of financial assistance but still have significant unmet needs to attend the college of their choice. Two weeks ago during a ceremony at Marlins Park, 260 MiamiDade Public Schools students were awarded over $231,000 in College Assistance Program grant scholarships thanks to the community partnership between CAP Inc., Miami-Dade Public Schools, the Foundation for New Education Initiatives and the Miami Foundation. Hispanic students can apply for the Florida Hispanic Foundation Scholarship.

HML names Adrian Alcala, a former Boston Red Sox team member, new baseball coach Adrian Alcala, who played for the Lowell Spinners, a minor league baseball team in the Boston Red Sox organization, has been named the new baseball coach at Hialeah Miami Lakes High School. Alcala was hired on July 14 to lead a Trojans team that hasn’t recorded a winning season in almost 10 years. “Join us in welcoming former Boston Red Sox and collegiate standout Adrian Alcala as the new HML Baseball Coach,” said the schools website. Alcala could not be reached for comments. According to his Lowell Spinners baseball guide, Alcala was born in Miami, where he played high school and college baseball. The third baseman was drafted by the Boston Red Sox and spent some time in the team’s minor league system before he was called up to play in the majors. One of his minor league career highlights came 14 years ago, when he helped his team rally from a two run deficit in extra innings. According to the Lowell Sun, in 2002, Alcala hit the first extra inning walk off home run by a Lowell minor-leaguer in 69 years, when he socked a two-run shot with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning off Greg Blalock and lifted the Spinners to a 5-3 triumph over the Jamestown Jammers in front of an SRO

ADRIAN ALCALA crowd of 5,000 at Edward A. LeLacheur Park in Lowell, Massachusetts. At the time, it was Alcala’s first pro home run. The SRO crowd was the Spinners’ 100th consecutive over parts of four seasons. Rick Rojas, a former pitcher for Hialeah Miami Lakes who was drafted by the Kansas City Royals in 1985, said Alcala can bring back the magic the Trojans experienced years ago. “Let’s get HML back to a championship team,” said Rojas, a distinguished alumni, who was named Miami-Dade County’s 100 greatest high school baseball players. “Let’s bring baseball back to HML, which was once the best high school baseball program in the state of Florida.”

American High boasts new football coach, new players and new attitude By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff American High’s football team has a new head coach, new players, a new attitude and new plays, hoping for new results this season. The challenge: Head coach Joseph Morgan’s team is young but he’s optimistic the Patriots can win the district championship for the sixth consecutive season. But for five seasons, American lost in the first round of the playoffs, and last year’s loss to Columbus is a rallying cry for the upcoming season, when American travels to play powerhouse Miami Northwestern on Saturday, August 27. Morgan indicated playing a storied program will put his players in a different environment but they must live up to the challenge. “We are preparing for Northwestern the same way as we prepare for any game,” Morgan said. “We are a football team and they are a football team. They have a storied history and the surrounding atmosphere is a little tense but our players must learn to perform under those circumstances and perform well.” And the Patriots’ schedule gets tougher from there. They play Miami Norland the following week, division rivals Hialeah Gardens, North Miami, Dr. Michael Krop and North Miami Beach, Carol City and Palm Beach’s powerhouse Oxbridge Academy. Losing star players from last

year’s division-winning team, Morgan is looking for young players to step out of the shadows and into the spotlight to help American win another district championship. The young players will be guided by senior quarterback Tyree Bibby’s leadership, who can take the team as far as the players want to go, and continuing the winning tradition under former head coaches Corey Bell and Anthony White. The competition for a starting running back is fierce as a group of young players are trying hard to impress Morgan during practices. Morgan is high on his receiving

corps, including Marquez Jackson, Javon Gary and Andre Reynolds. Morgan, who served as American’s defensive coordinator and defensive back coach, said his defense looks solid on paper and in practice, despite losing a lot of players from last year’s squad. He said the real test for his defense comes in the team’s season opener. American had one of the best defensive units in Miami-Dade County under Morgan last season. “We look solid,” Morgan said. “But we learn how good we are playing other teams.”

STU’s women’s volleyball team ranked No. 2 in poll St. Thomas University women’s volleyball is ranked No. 2 in the Sun Conference Coaches Preseason Poll. Under the guidance of new head coach Christina Ludwick, the team returns a loaded roster of experienced players with the goal of winning The Sun Conference Championship and in turn, advancing to the national tournament in 2016. Last year’s team posted a 23-10 record and a 10-2 Sun Conference

mark, and finished second in the league standings. STU’s 2016 season starts with back-to-back tournaments on August 19-20 and August 26-27 at the Fernandez Family Center featuring top teams from across the country. The Bobcats will then travel to Nashville, Tennessee for a matchup with Fisk University before participating in the Kentucky Crossover tournament September 2-3 in Barbourville, Kentucky.

ular season at Miramar on Friday, August 26. Mater Academy played Columbus High in a Spring game, which ended in a 0-0 tie. Senior cornerback Latavious Brini, senior player Lio’Undre Gallimore and sophomore linebacker Mikel Anthony Jones will lead the Lions in the 2016-2017 season, as Max Preps listed the Lions at 10 among the 25 Florida teams to win the Class 7A championship. During Media Day, the players from Mater Academy met other teams, including St. Thomas Aquinas, which enters the season ranked No. 1 in the nation by MaxPreps, and Miami Jackson’s Bernice Brunson, Florida’s first female head coach.

The program is created near a school or park and will pick up several students at a time. It is established based on the number of magnet students residing in the area. This pilot program will be expanded in the 2016-2017 school year through the adjustment of

Pace High wrestling coach Frank Pelegri inducted into Natl. Wrestling Hall of Fame By Rene D. Basulto Special to The Miami Laker Frank Pelegri, Pace High School’s long-time wrestling coach of 20 years, was formally inducted into the Florida chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame with a Lifetime Service to Wrestling award on August 6. Pelegri was one of four coaches and three officials from Florida inducted as part of the Hall of Fame’s Class of 2016 at the awards ceremony and banquet held at a Disney Springs Resort on August 5 and 6. In attendance to support Pelegri were his family, Pace principal Ana Garcia and other administrators, his assistant wrestling coach and Olympic bronze medalist Lazaro Reinoso, and several Pace alumni who wrestled under Pelegri. Two of these alumni were Tony Santiago and Maques Coleman, who won individual state championships for Pace in 1998 and 2001 respectively. Coleman was also a part of the team that Pelegri

coached to a FHSAA State Championship in 2000, making them the first state champions from a Miami-Dade County private school. Last school year, Pelegri was inducted into the Pace Hall of Fame and coached Class of 2016 alumnus Alex Perez to a state championship in the 138 lbs. weight class. In total, he has amassed a career record of 385 wins, 32 losses, and 2 ties. For his success, Pelegri credits his Christian faith and the school’s focus on Christ, a devotion he says has been strengthened by Garcia’s leadership. “It has truly been a blessing to have had a Christ-centered school such as Pace, said Pelegri. “It has given me the ability to draw strength from the Lord. I am extremely grateful for the wins and trophies, but the important thing is teaching [our wrestlers] to be God-fearing men, strong and courageous men who are never weak or afraid!

The Vallejo Family: A five-decade legacy of Pace High School alumni By Rene D. Basulto Special to The Miami Laker Since opening in 1963, Pace High School has seen many family legacies established, as alumni send their children to become Pace Spartans. Only very few families, however, can tout a Spartan legacy that extends across five decades. The Vallejo family has had 15 members who attended Pace from the 1970s into the 2010s, with 10 graduates from the family itself and 5 spouses whom they met at Pace and married into the family. The first Vallejos to attend Pace were cousins Ivan D. Vallejo and George Vallejo, who entered as freshmen in 1976 and graduated in 1980. Ivan’s wife Ana RosalesVallejo and Eric Vallejo both graduated from Pace right after in 1981. Carlos Vallejo followed as part of the Class of 1984, and Ozzie Vallejo and his wife Cindy Vallejo both graduated in 1985. George’s brother Freddy Vallejo graduated in 1986 while his wife Linny Navarro-Vallejo graduated in 1985. Alex Vallejo graduated in 1987. From these alumni came the next generation, as Ivan and Ana’s children Ivan A., Vanessa, and Stefan became Spartans. Vanessa graduated alongside her eventual husband Carlos de la Osa in 2000, Ivan A. did the same with his wife Vanessa Villar-Vallejo in 2004, and Stefan graduated from Pace in 2010. “It’s not every day that you can say five marriages in a family are a result of being high school

Miami-Dade County Public Schools has outperformed the state in percentage of schools rated “A” and “B”, according to school performance grades released by the Florida Department of Education in mid-July. With the implementation of the new school grading scale this year, the percentage of “A” rated schools in Florida for the school year just ended plunged by thirteen percentage points. However, 30 percent of all Miami-Dade

schools received “A” ratings for the year, compared to just 23 percent statewide. M-DCPS also received higher ratings than the state when examining the percentage scoring “A” and “B”; and when combined across “A”, “B”, and “C” ratings. M-DCPS outpaced schools statewide in the percentage receiving “A” ratings by each school type, with senior high schools and combination grade schools performing exceptionally well.

St. Andrews Lutheran Church will host a yard sale on Saturday, October 1, from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 575 West 68 Street in Hialeah, across from Twin Lakes Elementary School. Funds raised will provide continuing support for the church’s food bank and other ministry activities.

Beloved MLEC teacher Jennie Susi By Neyda Borges, Special to The Miami Laker Jennie Susi Taylor found joy in helping others. It was that spirit of giving that led her to her life’s work – teaching. Her spirit never wavered, despite a 10 year battle with cancer. Throughout her struggles with surgeries, medications, and chemotherapy, she taught her students, her friends and her family about love, life, and resiliency. She went to school on the days that she was scheduled for chemotherapy and – if she was able to pull herself out of bed – was back at school the next morning. It was her optimism, her love of life, that propelled her forward. And it was that determination, that enthusiasm for life that inspired those who knew and loved her. When she was first diagnosed with cancer, doctors told her that she had less than two years to live. Jennie decided that “statistics are just statistics. I’m going to be one of the positive statistics.” And, in so many ways, she was. She fought this disease for ten years, undergoing several surgeries, chemotherapy and all of the physical and emotional ups and downs that accompany treatment.

JENNIE SUSI TAYLOR She never lost her buoyancy, never stopped smiling, and was never too busy to take the time to reach out to friends, family, and former students to see how they were feeling. When she took a leave of absence to have surgery, she sent videos to her students, letting them know that she was recovering. She sent care packages and reached out to encourage them before their History End of Course Exams. On Friday, July 22, she passed away peacefully. Susi was one of two siblings

and proud daughter of Salvino “Sal” Susi and Patricia Roberts Susi, who she credited with teaching her to be positive, even in the face of adversity. Teaching brought her together with husband Donn Taylor. Married for fifteen years, they faced life’s challenges together. She retired from Miami-Dade County Public Schools in 2014, having worked at Miami Lakes Educational Center, Barbara Goleman Senior High, and Lake Stevens Middle School. Everywhere she went, she made an impact. Susi was a loving and devoted wife, sister, cousin, aunt, and friend. She is survived by her husband, Donn Taylor, brother Richard Michael Susi, cousins, nieces, and nephews. Her zest for life, her empathy and compassion have inspired everyone who had the privilege to know her. In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be made to The Marian Center School, 15701 N.W. 37 Avenue, Opa Locka, FL 33054, or The National Ovarian Cancer Coalition (NOCC), 2501 Oak Lawn Avenue, Suite 435, Dallas, TX 75219. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

MLEC’s Jonathan Tagoe, accepted to MIT’s summer MITES program Jonathan Tagoe, a senior in the Engineering Strand of the Cambridge Academy at Miami Lakes Educational Center (MLEC), was one of 70 students selected from across the country and Puerto Rico to participate in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) MITES Program, the Minority

Introduction to Engineering and Science (MITES). MITES is a rigorous six-week residential academic enrichment program for promising high school seniors who have a strong academic record and are interested in studying and exploring careers in science and engineering. Tagoe enrolled in college

courses, including college level Calculus, Physics 2 (electricity and magnetism), and humanities courses. He is the sixth MLEC Cambridge student to attend the MIT summer program in the last five years.

THE MIAMI LAKER

God in Every Subject By Paul & Charlene Thibodeau Special to The Miami Laker The dictionary says that the meaning of change is to: “Take the form, nature, content and future course to something different than what is or what it would be if left alone.” To deviate and take a person from the direction in which they were accustomed of going, changing an old habit by replacing it with a new habit under new conditions. Elevating to a higher level in the light of success giving Glory to God. This new 2016/2017 school year, Montessori Children’s House of Miami Lakes has chosen to be totally committed to bring the Word of God in every subject to the children with the blessing of Bob Jones University Christian Curriculum that will compliment

the Montessori Philosophy and materials. The Bible explicitly states that God is no respecter of persons. (Acts. 10:34) (Deut. 10:17). Montessori recognizes that not all children can perform well in a more free atmosphere, and a more structured environment would be conducive or contribute to their educational development. However, the entrance of God’s Word is the Major Key to a transformation within the life of children while they are young. (Psalm 119:130). The Word says that we are not to be conformed to this world, but transformed by the renewing of our minds, that we may know the good and perfect and acceptable Will of God and His Will concerning all our lives and that of the children place in our trust. (Rom.

12:1-2). We are extremely excited to introduce the new curriculum that the children will truly enjoy within their new remodeled classroom as a blessing to our school by Alex and Sandra Rodriguez, along with many additional enjoyable projects that have been added. Thank you and Bless you for allowing us to be a part of your child’s education and cultivation of their life and spirit. “And all thy children shall be taught of the Lord and great shall be the peace of thy children.” (Isaiah 54:13). Montessori Children’s House is located at 6381 Miami Lakeway North in Miami Lakes. For more information, call 305-823-2522 or 305-823-5632.License C11MD0920.
