The Maini Street Playhouse is located at 6766 Main Street. This comedic and charming play deals with the immigration experience in East Los Angeles in 1987. It takes place in a tiny sewing factory in the sweltering summer, and centers on five Mexican American women who are just barely getting by, each haunted by their immigrant status. The youngest of the full-figured women is Ana, who has big dreams of going to college to become a writer. She writes in her journal while working at the factory, documenting the ups and downs of each character and revealing some painful truths. When the play opens, the women are working on a deadline of getting dresses ready to be sold. This puts extra pressure on Ana’s older sister, who owns the shop. This play with a big heart is based on the playwright’s personal experiences and is a microcosm of the Latina immigrant experience. It is a play that celebrates women’s bodies, their individual and collective power, and the bonding that takes place when challenged to succeed.

Dade Christian School’s 6th annual Carnival runs from Thursday-Sunday, Feb. 23-26 On February 23, Dade Christian School will kick off its 6th Annual Carnival which runs through February 26. The carnival is a family friendly event with games, rides and food. All funds raised for the event go toward the school and New Testament Baptist Church. The carnival takes place on school grounds, 6601 N.W. 167 Street. Carnival hours are Thursday from 5 to 10 p.m., Friday from 5 to 11 p.m., Saturday from noon until midnight, and Sunday from 1 to 10 p.m. There is no cost for entry, however, rides require either tickets in the form of a ticket book or a 4day ride wristband which is valid for all days of the carnival and every ride. Presale prices last through February 21 and are $15 for a ticket book containing 25 tickets, and $45 for a 4-day ride wristband. Ticket prices increase when purchased at the gate. All tickets purchased online at www.dadechristian.org will be

Town hosts Crowdfunding workshop panel on Feb. 23 Miami Lakes Economic Development Committee will host a Crowdfunding panel workshop on Thursday, February 23, in Town Hall Chambers, 6601 Main Street. Networking and registration will take place from 8:30 to 9 a.m., and the workshop thereafter. Graham Cos. reveals Main Street banner art winners The Graham Companies and Main Street Merchants announced the winners of “Miami Lakes Inspires Me!” Main Street Banner Art contest. With so many submissions, only 26 pieces were able to be selected to be showcased on the light poles along Main Street. The artworks were judged by over 25 individuals with a selection of the top piece based on Elementary, Middle and High school groups. The top Elementary School submission came from Bob Graham Education Center 5thgrade student Samig Sandoval whose artwork is titled “Nature’s Gym.” The top Middle School submission came from Bob Graham Education Center 6th-grade student Biloux Henry whose artwork is titled “Our Colorful Town.” The top High School submission came from Hialeah Miami Lakes 12th-grade student Franco Gomez whose artwork is titled “Growth.”

New Miami Lakes Zip Code bill introduced in U.S. House U.S. Congressman Mario DiazBalart said he recently introduced legislation to create a unique and independent zip code for the Town of Miami Lakes. “I just introduced legislation similar to what the House passed last year that will create a unique ZIP Code for the Town of Miami Lakes,” After the bill passed, the Senate didn’t get a chance to vote on it during the congressional and senate hearing in November. Diaz-Balart had to file a similar bill to give Miami Lakes its own zip code. Diaz-Balart said in statement. “For far too long, Miami Lakes residents have dealt with the negative impact of lacking a unique ZIP Code for their town. From higher insurance rates to election confusion, there are a number of
reasons why a dedicated ZIP Code is necessary.” If Diaz-Balart’s bill passes in the House, the U.S. Senate will vote to officially give Miami Lakes its own zip code, or reject it. Miami Lakes Mayor Manny Cid has been spearheading the zip code initiative since he was first elected to the Town Council in 2012. “It has been a privilege to partner with Mayor Manny Cid as we continue to work towards a resolution,” Diaz-Balart said. “Even after encountering several roadblocks and denials from the United States Postal Service, he continued to find other options. I am grateful for his dedication to serving the Town of Miami Lakes, and look forward to seeing this bill through the committees of jurisdiction for a floor vote.”

Town to consult with County on annexation ideas By The Miami Laker staff A Miami Lakes lawmaker seeking to shield the town from development in nearby unincorporated areas, is proposing to annex commercial properties to control the zoning and add revenues to the town’s tax base. The areas Councilmember Nelson Rodriguez is targeting are near Opa-locka Airport and north of the Palmetto Expressway from Ludlum Road (N.W. 67 Avenue) east to N.W. 57 Avenue. At the February 7 Town Council meeting, lawmakers approved Rodriguez’s plan to first consult with Miami-Dade County to determine if adding the commercial areas which do not include residential homes and apartments is possible. If so, town staff would study the pros and cons of annexation for the area west of the airport and adjacent to N.W. 57 Avenue between 154 and 139 streets, and the commercial property north of the Palmetto Expressway. According to the town’s charter,
residents must approve any attempt to expand the town’s peripheries through a referendum before council members can take action. “We would go to the county first and if it’s not possible, it dies right there,” Rodriguez said. “If so, we instruct town staff to conduct the research. These areas we are looking to annex are strictly commercial.” Town Manager Alex Rey said the fiscal impact for a study is “low.” Rodriguez said the annexation issue could go on the ballot in November 2018. He said Miami Lakes has an opportunity to add the commercial areas to control the zoning in contrast to having no jurisdiction over the developments west of I-75 that are impacting the town such as traffic, among other issues. In 2003, Miami Lakes rejected the idea of annexing the land, which at the time contained a huge landfill and was devoid of infrastructure. Hialeah eventually

annexed the property. Rodriguez said the town made a mistake by not annexing the property and he doesn’t want to travel down the same path. “We missed the boat back then and I would hate to be caught in the same situation to the north and east of us,” Rodriguez said. According to Miami-Dade County Annexation and Incorporation records, no other city is seeking to annex the area, which is near the western boundary of Miami Gardens. Besides the annexation debate in 2003, a study was conducted several years ago to determine the impact if Miami Lakes was to annex Palm Springs North, an unincorporated community north of the town. Lawmakers and residents rejected the proposal since the zoning regulations and code compliance issues were a complete contrast to Miami Lakes’ standards, and that led to Councilmember Frank Mingo’s charter amendment that voters must initially give lawmakers the green light to proceed with any annexation plans. Albeit he supports annexation of the commercial areas, Mingo said he was concerned the county would offer the residential areas on Ludlum Road to the north, including The Moors. “Will the county let us annex the area without the residential is my concern,” he said. Two Miami Lakes residents sat on opposite sides of the annexation proposal. Maria Kramer, who opposed
the previous annexation proposals, sang a different tune. “I think it’s something we should consider,” she said. However, Claudia Luces said otherwise. “I’m against it,” she said. “I don’t see the need to involve ourselves in this type of process.” In other Council actions: • Lawmakers gave their initial approval for an ordinance to place a six-month moratorium on establishing marijuana dispensing organizations and medical marijuana treatment centers within the town, in order to consider and weigh the changes to the town’s land development Code needed to suitably register and accommodate these centers within town boundaries. • Council members gave their initial approval for an ordinance to place a six-month moratorium on the approval of permits to install telecommunication towers and equipment in the town’s public rights-of-way. The abeyance gives town officials a chance to weigh the changes to the land development code needed to suitably accommodate the structures within the town’s boundaries, while complying with new state and federal laws allowing cellphone towers. • Council members approved a resolution to ask Miami-Dade County to reactivate the traffic light at the intersection of N.W. 79 Avenue and Miami Lakes Drive to improve traffic on N.W. 154 Street during morning peak traffic hours and school pick up times at Bob Graham Education Center. • Council members approved a resolution to authorize the town manage to enter into a long term, three-year agreement with several community nonprofit organizations that offer programs and activities to benefit residents to use the town’s park facilities and community centers. The organizations include the
South Florida Council Boy Scouts of America, Girl Scout Council of Tropical Florida, Inc., and American Legion Post #144, for use of town park facilities for meetings and events. • Lawmakers approved Councilmember Luis Collzao’s proposal to host a workshop to discuss the hiring of the next town manager. Town Manager Alex Rey is retiring next year following a 30year career in government that started at Miami-Dade County. Rey has been the town manager for Miami Lakes from 2002 to 2008 and from 2009 to present. • Lawmakers approved Nelson Rodriguez’s proposal to ask Miami-Dade County to add Miami Lakes to the name of Miami-OpaLocka Executive Airport to get potential benefits from the new developments at the airport. He initially wanted to change it to Miami Lakes-Opa Locka Executive Airport, but residents rejected the idea and any ties to Opa-locka since the tumultuous city is on the brink of insolvency and several officials were arrested on bribery and kickback charges. Town officials prefer Miami Lakes Executive Airport instead. Town officials first want to ask The Graham Companies, which created the brand, if it’s possible, and if so, take the proper steps with the county. “Miami Lakes is the only full service city neighboring the airport that offers luxury and casual hotels, restaurants and shopping,” he said. “We also have a world class golf course.” • Council members approved Collazo’s proposal to create a traffic advisory board through the town’s Public Safety Committee and Neighborhood Improvement Committee to discuss and come up with solutions for the traffic congestion.

To earn the Florida Crime Prevention Practitioner designation, a participant must successfully complete three 40-hour courses

Graham Cos. hosts Senior Village workshop Feb. 28 In response to the growing need to properly care for the community’s senior residents, The Graham Companies has worked for several years with community and industry leaders, performed feasibility studies, and engaged design professionals to develop a plan to
access a broad spectrum of senior lifestyle needs in Miami Lakes. Modeled after a similar project working well in California, a plan has emerged that Graham representatives believe will provide a much-needed asset to the Town. The proposed plan includes an
active-senior rental community to be operated by The Graham Companies, plus an assisted living facility and skilled nursing facility operated by Miami Jewish Health, a local industry leader. The 220-unit apartment community will consist largely of one-

bedroom units with some two-bedroom units as well. The assisted living facility will have the capacity to serve a maximum of 100 residents, and the skilled nursing facility will accommodate up to 80 patients. Miami Jewish Health will also provide a wide array of senior-living ancillary services. Further, The Graham Companies is working with the Town to provide the Miami Lakes community with a 6,000 sq. ft. recreation and activity center within the complex geared primarily to serve the Town’s senior population. At their February 8 meeting, the Town’s Elderly Affairs Committee lent their unanimous support of the
project. Chairwomen Alexandra Alonso said, “This is just what we need in Miami Lakes to serve the interests of the Town’s elderly population.” The overall project faces challenges to the plan a reality including zoning and land-use changes. One of the first steps is to bring the project to the attention of Miami Lakes residents. To that end, The Graham Companies and Miami Jewish Health will host a workshop at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, February 28, in the Grand Slam Ballroom at Shula’s Hotel on Main Street to review their plans with the community. All interested parties are welcome to attend.

The club asks locals to mark their calendars for Saturday, April 8, and plan to attend an elegant evening of dining and dancing at Shula’s Hotel on Main Street. Main Street Players theatre group elect new officers, board of directors The Main Street Players, Miami Lakes’ only theatre now designated with a professional status, has made changes to their board of directors for the 2017 year. The first meeting of the year elected officers Clara Lyzniak as president and executive director, Robert Coppel as vice president
and artistic director, Dennis Lyzniak as treasurer, and Richard Cifuentes as secretary. Directors named were John Olivera, Patty Fernandez, Larry Chidsey, Charles James, Daniel Nieves, Cindy Castillo and Isaac Polanco. Shula’s Athletic Club hosts week-long charity drive to aid Big Brothers Big Sisters The Shula’s Athletic Club, located at 15150 Bull Run Rd., is sponsoring a week-long charity drive to benefit the Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) of Greater Miami between February 27 and March 5. Attendance at certain fitness classes will help the charity reach their goal. The minimum goal of $1,500 will go toward supporting one match of a needy child to an adult big brother or big sister. Members and non-members are encouraged to attend one or more of the following classes and make a minimum contribution of $10 per class. Donations will also be

When Mayor Manny Cid was knocking on doors and visiting neighbors during his recent campaign, he came across the home of longtime residents Joan and Ed Gansert. Invited to come in, Cid was in awe with the artwork around their home. Almost like an art museum, the Gansert’s home is filled with all types of mediums of art, predominantly created by them. One piece that stood out was the State of Florida in Stained Glass which now is currently on loan in the Mayor’s office at Town Hall. According to Ed Gansert, the stained glass map of Florida hanging in the Mayor’s office is one of two that he has made, the other hangs in his daughter Joanie Graham’s home. Hanging as an inverted L at 42 inches by 40 inches, the piece has all 67 counties and major lakes in Florida outlined with its own piece of glass, only five colors were used. The frame is made from Florida Cypress. Completed in the ‘80’s, Gansert’s template began with a map that he received at a visitor center when driving into the state. Since the map did not have all of the counties outlined, he called upon his neighbor and friend, Jan

BGEC civics students visit state capitol and request legislative help Bob Graham Education Center students in the Civic Engagement Academy got a civics lesson earlier this month from State Senator Rene Garcia, State Representative Manny Diaz Jr., and Miami Lakes Councilmember Frank Mingo. The students were in Tallahassee and received a tour of the Florida Senate and House chambers respectfully, and learned how an idea becomes a law and how the Florida budget works every year. Hitting close to home was how the budget can impact the Town of Miami Lakes when their elected officials request state funds for Town projects. The BGEC students also presented their Sudden Cardiac Arrest Prevention Act proposal that will be worked on by Garcia and Diaz. “A good idea can take years to

Bob Graham Edu. Center’s STEM Academy competed in RoboSlam VEX IQ event The Bob Graham Education Center Science Technology Engineering Mathematics (STEM) Academy competed on January 28 at the RoboSlam VEX IQ competition at the Miami Youth Fair Grounds. The teams’ ‘Savage Robots’ finished in 5th place in the team competition out of the 54 teams competing. The team was led by teacher Marilyn Dieppa. The team qualified to compete in the VEX IQ state competition
for their STEM research project which consisted of creating a robotic walking cane for the blind. All three STEM Academy Teams from Bob Graham Education Center will be competing at the state level competition scheduled for February 18. “We are so proud of this team who even received recommendations from the judges on marketing their idea,” said principal Yecenia Martinez-Lopez.

IN LATE JANUARY, Miami Lakes K-8 Center students took part in the 11th Kids Run Miami sponsored by the Miami marathon. Students who participated accumulated 25 miles during their physical education classes. They ran the last 1.2 miles of the marathon. Defensive back Latavious Brini (pictured above with his family and coach) signed his National Letter of Intent to attend the University of Georgia, while offensive lineman Brandon Dudley chose the Jacksonville University. Linebacker Jonathan Francois announced he plans to attend the University of North Carolina Charlotte, and defensive back Devonta Lopez has signed on to play for Florida Atlantic University under new head coach Lane Kiffin, who helped lead Alabama to a National Championship as the team’s offense of coordinator.
Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic School robotics students come in fourth at Regional Qualifying event Eighth grade students from Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic School captured fourth place at the Florida First Robotics Competition held at The Benjamin School in North Palm Beach. The competition was the South Florida Regional Qualifying Tournament as part of the First® Lego® League program by First Inspires. “I was impressed by the students’ faith throughout the competition,” said Kristina Bacallao, the STREAM (Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, Arts and Math( coordinator at OLL who also teaches technology for grades 5-8. “We were the only Catholic school at the competition,” Bacallao said. “Right before the robot portion of the competition, the students prayed to the Holy Spirit for guidance and created a cue word to use when feeling overwhelmed or were beginning to argue. The word – Pickles – and whenever anyone said it, they would all make the Sign of the Cross that helped them re-center and focus.” In preparation for the competition, the students checked that

human factors and how to help. They created a kit that would be sold to individuals, communities, and schools to help create gardens that increase pollination opportunities for honey bees. The OLL robotics competition team now heads to the South Florida Regional Tournament at Boynton Beach High School on February 25.

Javier Perez inspires STU Bobcats opening night By Phillip De Montmollin Special to The Miami Laker It was an unforgettable opening night that inspired, reunited old friends, and ended in an electric win by the Bobcats. Javier “Javi” Perez, the principal of South Dade High School and an assistant baseball coach for St. Thomas University from 199698, came back to St. Thomas on January 31 to help the Bobcats start their 2017 campaign and their quest for a return trip to the NAIA World Series. “It was very emotional to be back at St. Thomas where I started my coaching career,” said Perez. “It was an amazing night for me.” Perez, a close friend of St.
Thomas head baseball coach Jorge Perez, came back to STU on opening night nine months after a nearfatal accident last April where he lost both of his legs. He has been on the road to recovery ever since, a courageous journey with the goal of walking again. Opening night started with a private meeting in the Bobcats' locker room where STU president Monsignor Franklyn Casale led the group in prayer before Perez addressed the 2017 Bobcats, sharing in detail his inspirational story of courage and faith. “Talking to the team was the most impactful part of the night, even for me,” said Perez. “Baseball does build the founda-
tion. I am who I am today because of baseball. Like me, they [the current players] are going to be the fathers and the leaders in the community because of baseball and the things that they learn playing.” “My main message to the team was that life is going to throw you obstacles, or curve balls using the baseball term, and you have to bounce back, you have get up, and you have to keep trying no matter what comes at you. Some problems are bigger than others and obviously I am dealing with some serious stuff, but it's not the worst thing in the world. I am alive and the Lord gave me a second chance to be able to see my kids grow up and to do some big things in the
community for people who might need my help,” said Perez. Once at the field, many friends and former teammates were able to reunite with Perez who not only coached for the Bobcats but also played baseball for the Florida Memorial Lions, STU's opponent on opening night. The rosters for the Bobcats and Lions were introduced as both teams stood at attention along the first and third base lines setting up the main event as Perez headed toward the mound and threw the ceremonial first pitch to mark the start of the 2017 season. The two teams remained in position for the National Anthem before the season began in earnest with the Bobcats responding with a four-run first inning. STU would win the game 11-0 capped off by a two-run home run by James Spatafora as five Bobcat pitchers combined for a one-hitter. The whole night was made pos-
sible due to a tremendous friendship and lifelong bond between STU head coach Jorge Perez and Javi Perez. “Jorge is like a brother to me,” said Perez. “I have known Jorge for a very long time. In baseball, we create tremendous relationships growing up and those friendships last forever. He's a tremendous person and I really appreciate him giving me the opportunity to come back to St. Thomas and talk to the team.” Before the night was done, coach Jorge made Perez an offer to return to St. Thomas to once again throw out the first pitch. The next time, however, would be with Perez walking with prosthetic legs. Joseph Walpole named MLEC’s Teacher of the Year By Cesar Zafra Special to The Miami Laker While working to become the next Ernest Hemingway and write the next Great American novel, Joseph Walpole saw a sign – literally. He saw an advertisement on a bulletin board looking for teachers, and so he called the phone number. If you had asked him years ago, he would not have guessed that he’d land at Miami Lakes Educational Center as an English/AICE teacher. Despite this, he is officially the school’s Teacher of the Year, and proceeds as a finalist for the district award. This award recognizes his unique presence in the classroom and the impact he has made on the lives of countless students. “I did not choose teaching; teaching chose me,” said Walpole Walpole began his education career in the Virgin Islands. There, he met a ninth-grade student
The Thinker, and every year, for almost forty years, she has sent him a Christmas card with that picture. This is why he teaches – that Christmas card, and every other Christmas card he receives from his past students. Today, he receives cards from around the globe. Another element models his attitude towards a day’s lesson in his class – his daughter, “the treasure of [his] life.” He imagines her sitting in his classroom and asks himself, how do I teach her the necessary skills to live a good life? What is the best way? By thinking of her, Walpole says a teacher that is honest, full of purpose and motive, and – most of all –considerate. “Mr. Walpole teaches each student in the manner that he would teach his own daughter; with respect, with kindness, and with absolute belief in their ability to succeed,” said MLEC principal Lourdes Diaz. “I teach to the spirit. I want all my teaching practices to reinforce a sense that my students can face life’s great challenges,” said Walpole. He continued explaining that his lessons should “engrain values, the old verities that will anchor them through life, truth-seeking, responsibility, courage, compassion, and respect for oneself and for others.” With time comes progression and change. Teaching to the heart has gradually become more difficult with the integration of new

He gifted her a small replica of Auguste Rodin’s classic statue, The Thinker. She gifted him a customized Christmas card featuring a Santa edited into the pose of

Pace High students win awards at Future Business Leaders competition By Rene D. Basulto Special to The Miami Laker Pace High School students won awards in 11 categories at the Future Business Leaders of America district competition ceremony held on February 2. The 22 FBLA students showcased their skills in various business and career categories including banking, finances, mobile app development, entrepreneurship, and journalism. Pace High continued its long tradition of FBLA success, which includes several state and national titles, as 18 of the 22 students won first place as part of a Pace team or individually in their categories. First place team winners were Adriana Almonte, Natalie Verdiguel, David Joseph for Business Ethics; Andrew Sanchez, Brian Gonzalez, and Armando Barbosa for Computer Video Game & Simulation Programming; Nicholas Callison, Lexie Perez, and Vanessa Valdes for Hospitality Management; Ariana Gutierrez and Isabella Gonzalez for Entrepreneurship; and Nicole Diaz, Grace Li, and Christelle Lacroix for Sports and Entertainment Management. The center, which currently serves over 200 children, restores the lives of those children from newborn to 17 years old by providing a safe and nurturing environment. The Batchelor Foundation of Miami has offered a $100,000 Challenge Grant to help His House expand their program and
offer their services to many more children that the center is currently forced to turn away due to limited space and limited foster homes. Beds in the center are full, but with the help of a donation that will be matched by the Batchelor Foundation, His House can continue to accept and assist children in need. BOB GRAHAM EDUCATION CENTER’S Bobcat Dance Team competed at the American Dance Alliance state competition in late January at the FIU Arena. This is the team’s second competition this season as they previously competed at the regional ADA competition. “We are so proud of this dedicated team of girls who competed against other talented groups and brought home several awards recognizing them in several categories,” said principal Yecenia Martinez-Lopez. Basulto Special to The Miami Laker Pace High School welcomed 40 career professionals, including alumni, including recently elected Miami Lakes Mayor Manny Cid (Class of 2002), to present to its student body at its annual Career Day on February 3. Students listened to and spoke with professionals from careers ranging as wide as attorneys and FBI agents to dog care experts and fitness specialists. Of the 40 presenters, 21 were also Pace alumni returning to their alma mater and giving back to their Pace family and the current Pace student body. Both Cid and Miami Lakes Councilmember Nelson Rodriguez, a Class of 1987 Pace alumnus and firefighter, presented about their jobs as elected officials and other past careers. “It's wonderful having so many professionals from such varied careers come and share with our students,” said Celia Rouco, director of Development at Pace. “It
was particularly exciting to see so many alumni come back on campus and experience all the wonder-
ful things happening at Pace today.”

Second annual 5K Challenge on March 25 will benefit M-Dade Public Schools On Saturday, April 1 Superintendent of Miami-Dade County Public Schools, Alberto Carvalho, and the Foundation for New Education Initiatives (FNEI) are teaming up to host the second 5K Challenge from 7 a.m. to noon to benefit Miami-Dade public schools. The registration deadline is March 25. All participants running for a school team will help FNEI support their school. The race starting line will be at Museum Park and the route goes around the MacArthur Causeway onto Watson Island and return. Entry to the race is $30 per adult plus $2.64 registration fee and $10 per student plus a $1.54 registration fee. Once tickets are chosen, participants may select a school or administrative office from the drop-down menu on the registration site. Each team will require a team captain.
