The Graham Companies announced the winners of the “What I Love About Miami Lakes” Main Street Banner Art contest. From over 90 submissions, 26 pieces of art were selected to be showcased along Main Street. The artwork submissions were judged by 14 individuals with a selection of the top piece of work based on elementary, middle and high school levels. The selected top Elementary School submission was by Julian Hernandez, a 5th-grader at Miami Lakes K-8 Center, with his artwork titled “Growing With You.” The selected top Middle School submission was by Dayanis Oliva, an 8th-grader at Bob Graham Education Center, with her artwork titled “Miami Lakes, The Best in Entertainment.” The selected top High School submission was by Karla Gonzalez, a 10th-grader from Hialeah Miami Lakes Senior High, with her artwork titled “Why I Love Miami Lakes.”

Com. Bovo holds Town Hall event in Miami Lakes on February 26
BOB GRAHAM EDUCATION CENTER’S Bobcat Cheerleaders started their cheer year with a bang winning first place in the South Florida Regional Cheer Competition. Under the direction of coach Alexandra Rosa, this group of young ladies were able to overcome all of the adversities they were faced with this year and demonstrated their willingness to fight against all odds to rise to the top yet once again. “Coaching this team has been such a humbling experience for me. I am proud of their fighting spirit,” said Rosa. Student art banner winners announced (Continued from Page 1) When given the opportunity to participate in a banner contest specifically created for Miami Lakes’ resident youth, Bob Graham Education Center’s (BGEC) art students jumped at the chance and began sketching. The topic for the design, “What I love about Miami Lakes” made it a personal project the students took to heart, and it is no surprise that the outcome of their designs were successful and that the BGEC students represented the largest number of entries from any school. When asked what inspired her
and made this project so special, the overall 8th grade winner Dayanis Oliva said, “Miami Lakes is my home. It’s where I grew up. Miami Lakes Bar Association installs officers; Lorenzo Cobiella elected president The Miami Lakes Bar Association swore in its new officers and board of directors at the Don Shula Hotel on Thursday, January 30. Attorney and former Miami Lakes Town Council candidate, Lorenzo Cobiella, was elected president. “I am honored that my peers elected me president and entrusted me to lead the Miami Lakes Bar for this coming year,” said Cobiella. “During my tenure, I will focus on three main objectives – providing educational opportunities for our members, promoting our members, and outreaching to our community.” The Miami Lakes Bar Association was founded in 2005. Rosa Nell Hammer continues her Real Estate career as she nears 95 Rosa Nell Hammer will turn 95 this year on October 2. To celebrate, she’d like nothing better than to sell another home. Hammer has already sold thousands of single-family homes and condominiums in the Miami Lakes and Hialeah neighborhoods since launching her real estate career 47 years ago. “I love getting up in the morning and going to work,” said Hammer, a broker-associate with The Keyes Company’s Miami Lakes office. “You never know what the day will bring. There are always challenges and you have to work hard to succeed, but there’s always someone out there who needs your help.” Born in Mississippi in 1919, Hammer moved to Akron, Ohio, in the early years of World War II, working as a real-life “Rosie the Riveter” in a Goodyear aircraft factory. Along the way, she married Harvey Hammer, a Buffalo, New York native, who was in the Army Air Force. They spent several years in Japan, where he was stationed, then moved to the Florida Panhandle, and back to Japan where her husband served in the Korean War. In 1955, the Hammers moved to Miami where Rosa Nell devoted her time to raising four children, Glenda, Brent, Brian and Candace. “Now, I have eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren who live all over the U.S.,” she said. As a stay-at-home mom for
more than a decade, she lived in Hialeah where one of her neighbors was Ted Pappas, founder and president of The Keyes Company. “We were all here in the early 1960s when the Graham family starting developing Miami Lakes.” In 1967, Hammer decided to go to work for The Keyes Company. “I had sold my own home in Panama City back in 1951,” she said. “Our family had moved many times and I knew I could use that experience to help buyers and sellers.” In the 1970s, Hammer decided to join the Graham family, and sold new homes for Miami Lakes Development for the next 20 years. In 1997, Hammer returned to The Keyes Company when it opened a sales office in Miami Lakes. “I like working for a family-owned brokerage, and I’ve known the owners for many, many years,” she said.
ROSA NELL HAMMER Over a decade ago, Hammer teamed up with Keyes associate Allan Pelaez, a native of Costa Rica, who came to South Florida when he was 10. “We work together every day, sometimes seven days a week.” Hammer and Pelaez are among the top real estate associates in the Miami Lakes market and still going strong.

These funds will be used to enhance the county’s delivery of spay and neuter services, support low cost adoptions, and prevent the needless killing of sheltered animals.” Bovo added: “Last year, I
opposed a property tax increase because I believed that the solution to our revenue shortfall could be, in part, mitigated through private fundraising. Residents may make their donation by visiting the February 8 event in person, or online at district13@miamidade. gov. Over 100 pets from MiamiDade Animal Services, the Humane Society of Greater Miami, and the Cat Network will be available for adoption at the event. Attendees can enjoy music, food, hayrides, pony rides, a animal petting zoo at the Bill Graham Farm Village, and more. Free parking will be available at the east entrance to the park. Free Sunpass transponders will be available and vaccines, microchips and tags may be purchased at a minimal cost.

others. Daniel Gomez plays Luke, a young man hiding his sexuality from his zealous father, and justifying his actions with prayerful remorse. Luke is waiting to stop leading a double life when his younger brother is free from their father's hold. Luke's partner, Adam, played by Larry Chidsey, isn't fond of Luke's self-imposed righteousness and though it doesn't keep them apart, the fissures of their relationship multiply as the years pass. Holly, played by Liz Dikinson, is the fearless friend that harmonizes questioning and assuaging. She provides the calm between the storm, not through neutrality but in sympathy for everyone she meets. Butch, played by Harry Marsh was once married to wild child Arlene, played by Rachel Stone, and the dynamics of their divorcee relationship, and the many married years that came before it, have left their mark on Luke. They both struggle to grasp what defines weakness and strength. Arlene, curiously, never shares a scene with her son, a decision later shed light on. Brandon, played by Michael

The tragic final scene is held by a thread from hopelessness, saved by a handful of words that make "next fall" a possibility, if not by whom it was expected. Next Fall welcomes back many Main Street Playhouse veterans including Chidsey, Dikinson, Fernandez, Stone, and Marsh. The play is directed by the Main Street Playhouse's Artistic Director Robert Coppel. He has directed several Playhouse performances and has acting credits with New Theatre, The Actor's Playhouse, and The Ann White Theater. Next Fall contains strong language and content that may not be suitable for children. Bovo, Beacon Council host Small Business forum On Tuesday, February 25, the Town of Miami Lakes will host the Beacon Council and MiamiDade County Commissioner Esteban Bovo Jr. for a small business workshop. The free event, open to new and existing businesses, will be held at Miami Lakes Government Center, 6601 Main Street, from 7:45 to 10 a.m. Aimed at promoting economic development, the workshop will feature such topics as Building a Business Plan, Accessing Financial Resources, and Business Marketing and Networking.
“This is an incredibly valuable opportunity for local business owners and starting entrepreneurs to receive practical information from experts,” said Councilmember Ceasar Mestre, who also serves as chair of the town’s Economic Development Committee. Over 200 elected officials, friends and family gathered on Saturday, January 25, to formally unveil the designation of the Roberto Alonso Community Center at Royal Oaks Park in Miami Lakes. “It was great to see the community come together to celebrate the legacy of Vice Mayor Robert Alonso,” said Mayor Wayne Slaton. “I had the privilege of working alongside this great community leader and I am proud that his legacy will continue to live on in Royal Oaks, a place he loved and called home for many years.” Alonso, a leader of the Royal Oaks community for several decades, eventually represented Royal Oaks in the movement to incorporate the Town of Miami Lakes. Elected to the founding council in 2001, he served eight years including as the town’s first Vice Mayor. Alonso was a man of “action,” focusing on enhancing townwide public safety. He was a strong advocate of neighborhood community policing, and was instrumental in the development of infrastructure on the west side of town, and lobbying for the Fire Rescue Station, which is now under construction. He was an ardent advocate for the planning and development of Royal Oaks Park and his memory will be forever honored with the designation of the parks community center as the “Robert Alonso Community Center.”

Viet Nam veterans read and sign book telling their story of war The Main Street Playhouse opened its doors on Saturday, January 25, where Miami Lakes Mayor Wayne Slaton welcomed the Viet Nam veterans of VFW Post 8195 of West Park, Florida, on the publication of their book “The Viet Nam War, Black Bullets, Flashbacks and Untold Truths.” The veterans, who co-authored the book and published it back in 2013, did a reading followed by signing copies. A portion of the proceeds from the book goes to their “Stone of Hope” program that provides services, assistance
and support for Viet Nam veterans and other veterans with PTSD and other needs, concerns and problems. “It was an honor to be among such great heroes and have the opportunity to hear their stories of valor and sacrifice,” said Slaton. “This book is truly a firsthand personal diary of periods in their lives they spent as soldiers in the call of duty for their country that should be shared with our next generation. I know it was hard for them to tell these stories, but we are better for knowing them.”

Town residents invited to sign up for CERT training scheduled for April Miami Lakes residents are invited to register for the upcoming CERT training to be held April 10, 12 and 13. Classes will be held on Thursday from 5 to 9 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with a disaster simulation exercise on the final day of class. To become certified, participants must attend all days. CERT training is designed to provide basic training in disaster preparedness. The CERT basic training course includes search and rescue techniques, understanding the role of CERTs and their role in an immediate disaster response, basic fire suppression strategies and fire safety measures, and management of resources in medical response operations. “The training is a great way to
prepare our residents in case we suffer a serious storm or disaster,” said Councilmember Nelson Rodriguez. “As a firefighter, I have responded to multiple storms throughout our state. CERT teams can play a key role in helping First Responders.” The CERT basic training will take place at Government Center, 6601 Main Street. Review of Council actions taken at Jan.14 meeting At the January 14 Miami Lakes regular Town Council meeting, lawmakers took the following actions: • On second reading, councilmembers approved an ordinance to correct a situation where a zoning requirement to screen rooftop air conditioning equipment on townhouse properties inadvertently requires installation of a new roof or substantial roof alterations. Also on second reading, lawmakers approved a measure that would allow the Town Council to review zoning appeals but only by a super majority vote instead of applicants taking their cases to court after their plans were rejected by the town’s zoning and plan-
ning board. • Councilmembers on first reading approved an ordinance to impose a per-space fee for landowners and business owners to enhance on-street parking spaces in exchange for including additional parking spaces in its required parking zone in the Downtown area. • Lawmakers approved a contract with Southern Strategy Group for state lobbying services in an amount not to exceed $50,000. The award amount consists of SSG’s proposed amount of $42,000 per year, for a total of $126,000 for the initial three year term, plus $8,000 per year for additional services that may be required during the contract term.
• Councilmembers retroactively authorized the use of a contract contingency allowance account for the N.W. 154 Street Roadway and Drainage Improvements contract awarded to Acosta Tractors, Inc. The contingency amount was not to exceed $308,367.96. The contingency accounted for two factors – the potential to encounter muck during the construction work and the inclusion of the design and construction of irrigation and landscaping, which was not included within the project’s original scope. This will increase Acosta’s contract value from $1,027,893.20 to a maximum value of $1,333,261.16. • Lawmakers approved a resolution to place a charter amend-

He said the system has become
an effective public safety tool in neighboring municipalities, including help to locate any vehicles involved in crimes. Mestre said the License Recognition Software system is not a red light camera. • Councilmembers approved Vice Mayor Manny Cid’s request for town staff to study several alternatives for Miami Lakes to have its own zip code. By having its own zip code with the USPS, residents’ car insurance rates could be reduced. The Town of Miami Lakes has three different zip codes but they are part of the Hialeah Post Office. But Cid said Miami Lakes could contract with a private Delivery Service approved by the USPS, in which postage revenue would be split between USPS and the Town so the Town could set up and pay for its own mail distribution system. Such an agreement would create an independent Miami Lakes zip code.

Phelan McDermid Syndrome is a rare genetic disorder with a wide range of symptoms, primarily autism related symptoms associated with delays or complete absence in functional language, sensory issues, cognitive comprehension, motor control, seizures, kidney issues and sleep disturbances among others. Alex's symptoms are mainly associated with communication. “Alex does not speak so we have become excellent guessers identifying what she may want in a specific time. This is hit or miss and sometimes can draw out in full tantrums for minutes or hours,” said Martinez. Alex also has difficulty walking due to one of her femurs growing inward which causes her to trip. The family is currently looking into orthopedic options to correct or delay any more difficulty in movement. Martinez and her husband, Frank Valdes, are holding various fundraising events in the Miami Lakes community beginning in February and concluding in the summer, hoping to raise funds right before a special needs camp begins. Alex attended the four week camp last year after the family was able to collect enough money to cover the costs, just over $1,000 dollars, through a garage sale. The camp is hosted by the South Florida Autism Charter Schools (SFACS) which is the only charter school exclusively for students

Shopping Cart Safety When we enter a store, we seem to be unconsciously grab a shopping cart. Sometimes we may stop and wipe down the handle with an anti-bacterial wipe and if you have a child, you put them in the cart, but for the most part, we just go ahead with our tasks without really thinking of the hazard we are pushing around. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, each year approximately 23,000 children are treated in hospital emergency rooms for injuries from shopping carts. Children under three years of age account for 89 percent of shopping cart related injuries. The most common injury is from children jumping out of a cart, falling, getting pinches in the folding seat, or hit by another cart. The next time you go to the store with a child and use a shopping cart, remember the following: • Always make sure the cart has functioning safety straps. Whether your child is in a built-in baby seat, a toddler seat at the front of the cart, a two-kid bench seat, or a plastic car or a truck seat, make sure they are always strapped in. • Never leave a child unattended when they are in the cart. Always stay within arms reach, even if your child is safely secured. • Do not let your child stand up or climb on the cart. This increases the likelihood of your cart tipping over. • Do not place an infant carrier on top of the shopping cart. They can fall off easily in this position.

If you need to bring your baby’s car seat into the store, bring your own stroller and use the cargo basket for your groceries. • Do not place your child in the basket of the cart. Riding in a cart next to a package of raw meat may expose your child to salmonella. Always have your child in the seat and remember to place raw meats in a plastic bag. • Children should never ride on the outside of the cart or underneath the basket. • Older children should never push the car when another child is in the cart. It can easily tip over and injure both children. • Try and use carts with a safer design that are lower to the ground. An example is the model with a car built in the front. The
low center of gravity makes them less likely to tip over. You can do the following as an alternative to having your child ride in the cart: • Have older children walk and make sure they stay with you. • Place your child in a stroller, wagon, or front pack instead of a shopping cart. • Get another adult to come with you to help watch your children while you shop. One adult can get the groceries while the other one is constantly supervising the children. Following these simple tips will make your next outing a safer one and your hardest decision will be choosing the quickest checkout lane.

Pace’s Kayvon Webster plays in Super Bowl XLVIII By David Snelling The Miami Laker staff What a way for Kayvon Webster to cap off his NFL rookie season! The Denver Broncos cornerback played in Super Bowl XLVIII in New Jersey at Met Life Stadium. The highlight of his rookie season came in week 5 against the Dallas Cowboys, as Webster recorded his first career forced fumble, when he forced Dez Bryant to cough up the ball, as the Broncos won a wild game, 51-48. In Denver’s following game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, Webster intercepted quarterback Chad Henne for his first career interception. Webster replaced Bailey, who was injured early in the season, in the starting lineup, but he hurt his right thumb in the upset loss to the San Diego Chargers during week 13. He had surgery with just two games left in the regular season and returned for the Broncos’ first playoff game against the Chargers. All in all, Webster recorded 41 tackles (37 solo), one interception and one forced fumble. “Kayvon has got a lot of swagger," Broncos safety Rahim Moore told The Rocky Mountain News. “He’s so confident; he’s not a rookie to me. I saw that when he first came into training camp, he’s an unbelievable player." What the Broncos saw in Webster as he closed out his career at South Florida was a cover corner who also led his team in 82 tackles as a senior. And while
scouts often lament how much game video they have to wade through to see any cornerbacks in press coverage in college football, where most coordinators prefer to back off in coverage, Webster liked to play it close. “I think maybe it helped me, that people saw I could match up,’’ Webster told NFL.com “I want to be able to do whatever they ask me to do.’’ Webster said his more veteran teammates in the defensive backs’ meeting room are constantly dropping “pop quizzes’’ on him, asking him his assignments in specific situations, simply to see if he is indeed following along. For his part, Bailey has seen plenty of rookies come and go through the years in his decorated career and he has consistently said it takes two things for a rookie cornerback to advance very far past the rookie part. That it takes the confidence in yourself to bounce back from the inevitable tough plays. "You're matched against some of the best athletes in the world, they're going to score a touchdown sometimes no matter what you do,” Bailey said. “It’s all about remembering they brought you here for a reason, so you have talent. But talent is just the start. You have to keep fighting on every play, give up a touchdown, get

M. Lakes Educational Center hosts State School Board By Karina Padron and Alejandro Mendoza Special to The Miami Laker On January 21, the atmosphere buzzed as local and state educators poured into Miami Lakes Educational Center's auditorium. The Florida Board of Education convened to discuss the renaming and revamping of the Common Core, hosted by board members Gary Chartrand, John R. Padget, Ada G. Armas and the newest board member, Rebecca Fishman Lipsey. Also sitting in on the board was Pam Stewart, the Florida Commissioner of Education. On the agenda was a report on the Florida Standards. “It is true to say that these are Florida Standards and not just the Common Core,” said Stewart, commenting on the 60 new standards and 30 clarifications that were added to the traditional Common Core; it was renamed the Florida Standards after these changes were made. The most pertinent changes are the addition of Calculus, an emphasis on print and cursive writing, and a focus on financial literacy to the curriculum. “Calculus is already in the sys-
tem, we’re simply revamping the standards set by the course,” said Stewart. Opponents of the Florida standards say that the renaming of the Common Core is nothing more than political rebranding to try to spin the curriculum in their favor. Florida will also be transitioning from the FCAT to a new standardized test to fit the new curriculum. The test is set to be revealed in full at the next school board meeting, February 18, in Orlando. Miami-Dade, the most effective and academically advanced county in the state, has taken issue with continuation of school grading while the test transitions. While Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho is in favor of the Common Core, saying that it will “significantly elevate the quality of what students learn,” he is not in favor of continuing to assign grades during this transition. But the Commissioner of Education is not budging. “It’s my responsibility to be focused on the students in Florida, and the school grading system will in fact motivate adults to meet the needs of students. So to suspend that would not be best for our stu-

Carvalho as “Superintendent of the Year” during a meeting at Miami Lakes Educational Center on January 21. Carvalho was recognized for remarkable gains in student achievement. Miami-Dade placed among the highest-achieving school districts nationally in 4th and 8th grade reading and mathematics on the National Assessment for Educational Progress. Graduation rates increased to 77.2 percent, surpassing the state in both rate-of-growth and total graduation rate. This year's theme “Reading Accelerates Success” was promoted throughout the ceremony in an effort to connect the value of literacy with careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) careers. All participants were asked to bring their favorite book and together read for five minutes. American Senior High was honored and proud to have been selected as the recipient school to kick off literacy week in Florida. This was the first of many stops for Scott who continued her statewide literacy tour. Lawton Chiles Middle School now offers M-Dade’s first accelerated science program Lawton Chiles Middle School, with the assistance of the MiamiDade Public Schools (M-DCPS) North Regional Office, began offering the only accelerated science program the county that assists fifth grade students in receiving a middle school science credit. The participants consist of 15 students from Palm Spring North Elementary and 15 students from Spanish Lakes Elementary. Lawton Chiles worked very closely with these two elementary schools to select fifth grade stu-
dents who were not only high achievers and responsible, but who were also able to cope with the additional coursework. These students travel to Lawton Chiles Middle School on Wednesdays and use one of the computer labs to access the course using the Florida Virtual School (FLVS) platform. Preparing elementary students for middle school, course acceleration, and the digital environment are top priorities for Lawton Chiles Middle School.

Education Fund hosts grant award meeting in M. Lakes The Education Fund, in conjunction with Miami-Dade Public Schools, will host an open house and teacher grant award reception on February 11 at 6713 Main
Street in Miami Lakes. The open house is scheduled from 5 to 6:15 p.m., followed by the teacher grant and award reception from 6:15 to 7:30 p.m. Continuing with “For Excellence in Miami-Dade Public Schools,” teachers will be awarded cash grants to help them develop and implement instructional projects that motivate and challenge students to learn. Proposals should be unique classroom projects that enliven and enrich the curriculum. Many past grants have included interdisciplinary, active-learning lessons. Others have reinforced learning through simulations or applied school work to real-life situations. Teacher Mini-Grants range from $300 to $1,000. In the past 23 years, more than 1,150 projects have been funded. The Education Fund's first program awarded mini-grants to classroom teachers. Today, the organization operates up to a dozen initiatives at any given time, ranging from small grants programs to large-scale school improvement initiatives, all aimed at increasing student achievement. Together, the programs benefit all of the 390 schools, about 22,000 teachers and 340,000 students in Miami-Dade County Public Schools.

Pace Future Business Leaders chapter members win medals in district FBLA competitions By Brielle Perez Special to The Miami Laker The Future Business Leaders of America organization is the largest career-oriented student organization in the world. It prepares its members for careers in dozens of business subjects, such as Entrepreneurship, Banking and Financial Systems, and EBusiness by challenging them to compete against one another in these areas through administered tests as well as presentations. The FBLA chapter at Monsignor Edward Pace High School, under the guidance of their dedicated advisor, Hedda Falcon, was very successful as they recently competed at the district level in a variety of business subjects. Students received their testing and presentation results at the awards ceremony that the club attended on January 15, earning medals that qualify 18 members for the state-wide competition coming in March. Pace's FBLA members continue to work diligently on sharpening their business skills and knowledge so they can do well at the national competition this summer.

Pace cheerleaders win first place in Florida Cheer/Dance competition Monsignor Edward Pace High School's Spartan Varsity cheerleading team has come a long way. The girls will be competing in State Regionals and State Finals in Orlando, Florida, after winning first place and the Spirit Award at the Florida Cheer and Dance competition. The Pace cheerleaders are working hard practicing daily, cheering at every pep rally and football and basketball games, all while maintaining no less than a B average with 90 percent of the team on the honor roll. Coached by Spartan alumni Lanita Zeigler, class of 1982, Melissa Pimentel-Reyes, class of 2004, Brandy Acevedo, class of 2010, and Chelsea Zeigler, class of 2011, the Spartan cheerleaders will continue to have a successful season. This season has proven to be one of their best thus far, winning second place at their first competition, and the top honors at the Florida Cheer and Dance competition.

Mother of our Redeemer (MOR) Catholic Church and School are celebrating their annual festival this weekend. The festival runs Thursday, February 6 through Sunday, February 9. Festival hours for Thursday and Friday are from 6 to 11 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. This is the church's primary fundraiser which helps MOR service the Catholic community across Northwest Miami-Dade County. Pastor Fr. Jimmy Acevedo said, “We hope everyone will come to enjoy the carnival and the delicious food, lots of food! We have the largest offerings of foods from all over Latin America and the Carribean.” Ana Casariego, school principal, together with the teaching staff and parents will run the
school booth which will offer barbecue ribs and french fries. “It will be exciting to meet and serve the people of our church, school and neighboring communities,” said Casariego. Dade College continues free VITA tax prep services Miami Dade College is continuing its 20-year tradition of offering free tax preparation services to low-income individuals, the elderly and non-English speaking residents. The Volunteer Income Tax Assistant Program (VITA) is administered and staffed by faculty and MDC business students who volunteer their time to help the public in preparing their tax forms. Students are trained beforehand and must pass an IRS exam of basic rules, regulations and tax preparation skills before they assist taxpayers. BOB GRAHAM EDUCATION CENTER (BGEC) staff, students, and families walked together along with over 20,000 members of the South Florida community on Saturday, January 25, to help raise autism awareness and enjoy a fun-filled day at the Dan Marino Foundation sponsored event, WalkAbout Autism 2014. BGEC's team "Team Help" raised over $1,000 for the cause and 25 percent of the funds will return to the Special Education department (SPED) at the school. The SPED department will use those funds for resources in the classroom.

‘Frozen’ was theme for this year’s New Testament father/son campout The theme for this year’s 3rd annual New Testament Baptist Church’s Father Son campout was “Frozen.” Not to be confused with the Disney movie, 130 fathers and sons gathered for the annual Everglades getaway and the lowest temperatures ever recorded about 90 minutes northwest of Miami Lakes at 31 degrees. The oldest father and son tandem was Cliff Konchak (reserving to remain ageless) who attended with his sons Craig (42) and Brett
(31). The event was held on January 18-19 on private property that is surrounded by a million acres of the Big Cypress National Preserve, and was hosted by “Alligator” Ron Bergeron. “Alligator Ron” as he is affectionately known, is a commissioner who was reappointed to a fiveyear term on the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission in March 2013. His goal in providing access to this beautiful acreage is to
ensure that the next generation will fall in love with the Everglades and have a desire to protect it. Event coordinator Craig Konchak said, “There is something special about gathering together a group of fathers and sons and giving them an opportunity, in an amazing setting like this, to restate their commitment to one another.”
DADE CHRISTIAN SCHOOL’S 3rd annual Father/Son Campout brought over 130 fathers and sons to the Everglades where they enjoyed a weekend of numerous outdoor activities and fellowship.

Monsignor Pace poets, singers and thespians host Open Mic Night Monsignor Edward Pace High School's poets, singers, and thespians came together on the evening of January 15 to take part in Pace’s annual Open Mic Night. Katherine Palacio and the Literary Guild club coordinated the event with senior Nina Pulley taking the lead in organizing the evening. Students with various interests and talents, from various
electives and clubs such as theatre and writing, wrote original poems, creative pieces, monologues and songs to perform. The school’s new administration building was transformed into a cozy coffee house complete with lights, snacks, and sweets. Friends and family watched as the creative bunch grabbed the mic and performed for the intimate gathering.
