Pace High’s cheerleading squad heads to state finals By Rene D. Basulto Special to The Miami Laker After placing second in regional competitions, Monsignor Edward Pace High School’s varsity cheerleading squad will be heading straight to the FHSAA State Finals on January 28-29 in Gainesville. This is the first time in 16 years that the cheerleading team will be going to the state finals, and the first time ever that they qualified to head straight to finals. The team scored a 77.40 and received zero deductions in the FHSAA regional competitions on
January 6, scoring around 10 points higher than last year despite performing a more difficult routine. Since they scored over a 70, they immediately qualified for the state finals and will be skipping the semi-finals. “It’s really exciting for us,” said Lauren Aponte, a Pace sophomore and Miami Lakes resident who is a base on the team. She says that practices have been more grueling this year, but it has been worth it. “It was our goal to go straight to state finals, so reaching that goal was a huge accomplishment for us.”

Miami Lakes Town Council:
Staff asked to study possibility of annexing adjacent commercial areas The Miami Laker staff In a move to expand the commercial tax base of the Town of Miami Lakes, a councilmember is proposing to annex a chunk of commercial property near Opalocka Airport, but residents must approve any attempt to expand the town’s peripheries through a referendum. Councilmember Nelson Rodriguez is requesting that town staff study the pros and cons of annexing the area west of the airport and adjacent to N.W. 57 Avenue between 154 and 138 streets. The area is part of the Miami Opa-Locka Executive Airport owned by Miami-Dade County and includes a variety of recent commercial developments including warehouses and retail opera-
tions. He also requested a staff study for the possible annexation of the commercial area bounded by N.W. 57 Avenue on the east, Ludlam Road (N.W. 67 Avenue) on the west, a canal on the north and the Palmetto Expressway on the South. This area includes multiple warehouses and retail operations. He made the request at the January 17 regular Council meeting. “This area is strictly commercial and has no residential houses or apartments,” Rodriguez said in a memo to his colleagues. According to Miami-Dade County Annexation and Incorporation records, no other city is seeking to annex the area, which is near the western boundary of
Miami Gardens. Rodriguez’s proposal is the latest annexation discussion for Miami Lakes, where lawmakers and residents rejected previous ideas to shield their quality of life. In fact, residents approved a referendum, which was proposed by Councilmember Frank Mingo, that voters must initially give lawmakers the green light to proceed with any annexation plans. In 2003, council members rejected annexing a huge chunk of land west of 1-75 since it contained a landfill and devoid of infrastructure. The City of Hialeah eventually annexed the property. Several years ago, a study was conducted to determine the impact

Legislators propose bills to mitigate effects of blasting on local residents The Miami Laker staff As northwest Miami-Dade and Broward residents are still reeling from the blasting caused by the rock mining industry, two state legislators are hoping to ease their anxiety. The residents of Miami Lakes, Palm Springs North and Miramar have turned to Senator Rene Garcia and State Representative Manny Diaz Jr. for help, and the two lawmakers have responded by filing two bills in the House and Senator to protect residents’ properties from more damages caused by the explosions. House Bill 195 and Senate Bill 354: Construction Materials Mining Activities, ask the state’s Fire Marshall, which controls the blast-
ing, to modify ground vibration limits for mining activities. Giving the state’s Fire Marshall the authority to lower intensity levels, while conducting a comprehensive study, will allow the Legislature and Fire Marshall the ability to make long term decisions to protect infrastructure while keeping up with the demand of Florida’s growing economy. According to Diaz and Garcia, the legislation would not only protect properties but also ease the burden on the surrounding population, with an introspective look at the areas most susceptible populations, such as pets, seniors and children. “This has been a problem in our community for some time,” said
Diaz. “This legislation is a step forward to addressing this issue and protecting our residents.” Said Garcia: “Our constituents need us to stand up for them in the legislature. I will continue to work with all stakeholders on this legislation to fix this issue.” Miami Lakes Councilmember Frank Mingo, who’s running for Diaz’s seat in 2018, said he supports the two state lawmakers’ effort to help protect residents’ properties. “Garcia and Diaz have filed a bill that will benefit the residents of Miami Lakes,” Mingo said. “I am proud to support this legislation with my colleagues.”

Council debates moratorium for approval of medical marijuana dispensing centers (Continued from Page 1) if Miami Lakes was to annex Palm Springs North, an unincorporated community north of the town. The proposal led to a backlash and Mingo’s referendum proposal. In addition to annexation, lawmakers were expected to give their initial approval for an ordinance to place a six-month moratorium on establishing marijuana dispensing organizations and medical marijuana treatment centers within the town, in order to consider and weigh the changes to the town’s land development Code needed to suitably register and accommodate these centers within town boundaries. In November, Florida residents approved a ballot for medical marijuana to expand the medicine to people suffering from cancer, HIV, Parkinson’s disease and other health issues that doctors must determine if the patient
needs medical marijuana. Another ordinance before lawmakers at the meeting concerned placing a six-month moratorium on the approval of permits to install telecommunication towers and equipment in the town’s public rights-of-way. The abeyance gives town officials a chance to weigh the changes to the land development code needed to suitably accommodate the structures within the town’s boundaries, while complying with new state and federal laws allowing cellphone towers. Also on the agenda was Councilmember Tony Lama’s proposal to replace the town’s ondemand bus services with ride haring service providers. (Editor’s note: A complete summary of actions taken at the January 17 meeting will be included in the February 3 issue.)

Always At Your Side expands staff and services By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Always At Your Side Adult Day Care has welcomed two new faces to the staff, Niccole Liriano and Christopher Gonzalez. The center’s director, Alexandra Alonso, has worked to offer the elderly community of Miami Lakes and the surrounding areas, some patients coming from many cities away for a reliable, personalized and active center for physical, mental and social health. Along with the growth of the center has come the necessary expansion of staff to continue creating a positive and safe environment for the elderly. “Adult day cares sometimes lack resources for activities and the elderly are still capable and willing to do many things when
they come here. We want them to receive the full benefits of the center on a daily basis,” said Alonso. Niccole Liriano, a student at University of Miami pursuing a master’s in public health, has joined the team as Site Coordinator which entails responsibilities relating to community outreach and education as well as working alongside case managers to assure that patients are receiving all necessary care in the center and at home, and working with families to help them meet qualifications for the Alliance of Aging Assistance. The program is the only one of its kind that completely covers the cost of adult care. Christopher Gonzalez, a student with plans to pursue a master’s in pre-occupational therapy, is the center’s new Activities Coordina-

tor which involves working oneon-one with the people at the center to make a cohesive, structured, and fun personalized activity plan for each person based on their physical abilities and their interests. “We can get everyone together to do crafts or bingo but what I really wanted to do was find something engaging for each person here, then make a customized plan for them so they are more involved and invested in what they’re doing and that these are mentally and socially stimulating activities,” said Gonzalez. The new staff, a stark contrast in age to the elderly attendees, was ideal for the flow of the center, according to Alonso. “They immediately ask questions if Niccole or Chris aren’t here,” said Alonso. “Both Niccole and Chris are educated, patient and outgoing so they mesh very well with the people here at the center and they are missed when they’re not around.” Liriano notes how some of the women want to take selfies with her. The revamping and improvement of the center’s activities and site coordinating is just another step in the continuous awareness and effort made by Alonso and her staff to provide thoughtful, safe and active services for the elderly

The Main Street Players have scheduled auditions for Marjorie Prime, a thought provoking science-fiction play by Jordan Harrison, that was a finalist for the 2014 Pulitzer Prize. The play is a tale of aging, loss of memory, and the technology that eases both pains. Marjorie, 85, is feisty and physically fit but battling memory loss. Main Street Players present Real Women Have Curves at Main St. Playhouse Feb. 3-26 Main Street Playhouse, located at 6766 Main Street, is one of the longest running community theater groups in South Florida. The Playhouse opens their 2017 season with their first professional production, Real Women Have Curves by Josefina Lopez. This comedic and charming play deals with the immigration experience in East Los Angeles in 1987. It takes place in a tiny sewing factory in the sweltering summer, and centers on five Mexican American women who are just barely getting by, each haunted by their immigrant status. The youngest of the full-figured women is Ana, who has big dreams of going to college to become a writer. She writes in her journal while working at the factory, documenting the ups and downs of each character and revealing some painful truths. When the play opens, the women are working on a deadline of getting dresses ready to be sold. This puts extra pressure on Ana’s older sister,1.812 whoin. owns the shop. This play with a big heart is based on the playwright’s person-

Special meditation class hosted at Miami Lakes Library on January 27 By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff The Miami Lakes public library branch is offering general mediation classes every Friday from 11 a.m. to noon. On January 27, the library will present a special guest speaker, meditation specialist, Patrician Calhoun, to lead a presentation called “Stress RX,” a guide to reducing stress. Calhoun
has had a lifelong interest in health and spent 20 years as a nurse practitioner in South Florida. “My presentation is about how stress affects the body and mind and what we can do about it,” said Calhoun. “I will be discussing things like using breath, sleep, simple meditation and the power of connectivity with others.” Dr. Kathy Shea, who typically

leads the Friday morning meditation class, volunteers with Calhoun at the non-governmental organization, Brahma Kumaris Meditation Center, which has partnered with FIU’s medical program and Miami-Dade County Public Libraries to bring the education of meditation to the public in targeted areas where FIU has noticed trends of families with certain health conditions, or those without insurance, in an effort to bring holistic wellness to the community. FIU is able to target these communities and introduce the work of the Brahma Kumaris Meditation Center due to the Green Family Foundation’s grant to the medical school. The form of meditation discussed at the meetings is raja yoga meditation. Shea first encountered meditation following a stroke she suffered in front of her students at the University of Miami two decades ago. After a friend noted how stressed she was, Shea began studying mindfulness and meditation and is pleased that these concepts are now more widely accepted and mainstream than they were when she first stumbled upon it. “It’s a service to the community that we believe in so much that we offer it to the community absolutely free,” said Shea. The Stress RX component is a one time event taking place from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on January 27. For more information contact the library at 305-822-6520.

in the NBA after the Washington Wizards drafted him in the second round in 2003. The former Maryland standout had three stints with the Portland Trailblazers, played for the Milwaukee Bucks, Denver Nuggets, L.A. Clippers, the Lakers, the Golden State Warriors and the Detroit Pistons. Blake played alongside Bryant for three years as a member of the Los Angeles Lakers and ended his NBA career with the Pistons in 2016. On October 22, 2016, Blake signed with the Sydney Kings for the 2016-17 NBL season, and in his debut scored 12 points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals in an 87-78 win over the Brisbane Bullets. At Maryland, Blake was the first ACC player to compile 1,000 points, 800 assists, 400 rebounds and 200 steals. He led Maryland to the National Championship in 2002. Blake finished his career 5th in NCAA all-time career assist with 972, and was named First Team All ACC in 2003. He was so revered at Maryland that the school, at the start of the 2003-2004 season, retired his No. 25 jersey and raised it to the rafters at the Comcast Center. In high school, Blake spent his freshman and sophomore seasons at Miami Killian High before he transferred to Miami High, where he won back-to-back state titles. Miami Heat power forward Udonis Haslem was his teammate. However, the FHSAA forced Miami High to forfeit the titles fol-

St. Thomas men’s soccer team wins Sun Conference; falters at Nationals St. Thomas University’s men’s soccer team entered the NAIA National Championships as the Sun Conference champions but the weather in Ohio doomed the Bobcats in the opening round of the tournament, as the host team, Rio Grande, prevailed to a 5-1 victory. Playing in cold, blustery conditions with temperatures dipping into the upper 30s, Rio Grande took advantage of its home field advantage opening up a 2-0 lead with back-to-back goals in the 15th and 17th minutes. In the 28th minute, the Bobcats scored as Rio Grande allowed a lone goal to make the score 2-1. The Red Storm would score again in the 36th minute, then add on two insurance goals in the sec-
ond half. Harry Reilly led the Red Storm with a hat trick of three goals plus one assist. The loss ended a season in which the Bobcats won the Sun Conference Tournament Championship with a 1-0 victory over Keiser at Bobcat Field, and advanced to the NAIA National Championships for the first time since 2010. Roni Luokkamaki scored the game-winning goal in the 51st minute scoring on a rebound off an offensive opportunity created by Kris Wilkinson. On the gamedeciding sequence, Wilkinson dribbled through a group of Seahawks defenders, then sent the ball into the goal mouth where Danny Martinez fired off a shot on
goal. Keiser's goalkeeper Nico Gomez saved the shot by Martinez, but Luokkamaki was in perfect position for the rebound and promptly found the back of the net for the game-winner. The Bobcat defense held the Seahawks in check, allowing just one shot on goal as goalkeeper Connor Christie recorded the shutout. Strong performances on the defensive end by Frank Long, Harry Molyneux, Nico Sobanski, Breno Ertty, Vinicius Carvalho and Santeri Bergman made it an easy night for Christie. The shutout was the second in as many games in Sun Conference tournament play for Christie and St. Thomas’ defense.

Homer the Dog turns heads as he strolls with his unique lion-like mane
Barbara Goleman’s Class of 2017 show their school spirit
By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Antonietta Kelly lives on the east side of Miami Lakes and every day, on one of her many walks with her dog Homer, he is beloved, pointed at, gawked at, and sometimes even feared. Homer is memorable not only for his sweet disposition but also because he resembles a small lion. The gentle dog is of medium size and lazily strolls down familiar neighborhoods, but despite his lack of bark or bite, he manages to both awe and scare locals who don’t know him due to his orange mane. Kelly and her husband care for Homer, who belonged to their late daughter, Susan Kelly Becker, a master therapist, a longtime resident of Miami Lakes and beloved daughter, wife, and mother. Homer spent some time initially with Becker’s husband, Michael, and sons, Daniel and Sean, but Homer seemed to be stricken with grief and eventually made a permanent home with Kelly, a retired professor, and loving owner. Homer, despite his regal walk and prestige, has no known pedigree and is thought to be a mutt. His famous hairstyle in the shape of a closely shaved body, fluffy tail and lion’s mane, are maintained by a local dog groomer. Homer walks the sunny Miami Lakes sidewalks, a self-proclaimed king of the suburban jungle, and the gaggle of enamored subjects (with the occasional mail-

Farrah Salem is selected as Hialeah Miami Lakes’ Teacher of the Year By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Farrah Salem, named Hialeah Miami Lakes Senior High School’s Teacher of the Year, gets lost in the sea of students at HML, not only because of her height but also because of her youth. It was-

n’t very long ago that Salem roamed the halls herself, as a class of 2010 Trojan. Salem changed plans from attending law school even after taking the LSAT and interning at numerous law firms to pursue her newfound passion in teaching, following a stint with Teach For America. The Miami Lakes native earned her bachelor’s in sociology and minors in Educational Studies and Communication Studies at the University of Florida and an M.Ed in Educational Leadership at the University of West Florida. She was also certified in Physical Science and Marketing for grades 6-12. Salem’s foundation for a law degree translated well into her new career teaching subjects like Digital Media Fundamentals and her role at lead magnet teacher and Department chair for Career and Technology Education. “I have always been interested

in technology,” said Salem. “I have even taken programming courses in college. I love marketing, design, and making things more efficient through technology.” Apart from the classroom, Salem sponsors the Women of Tomorrow, FBLA, coaches softball, and is a participant in the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce’s Leadership Miami program. “I feel like every teacher is incredible for what they do, and being recognized for it just makes me even more motivated to make a difference,” said Salem. “I care about everyone in this building so deeply.” Salem cites genuine relationships as what students best respond to in the classroom. Treating students with respect, making them feel capable and supporting their dreams are concepts that have worked well within Salem’s classes. The combination of determined kids and a magnificent staff are what make for a dynamic school that has led to state awards earned by FBLA, Mock Trial, Model UN and DECA teams. “I credit my success as a teacher to my students and administration who make coming to school worth it,” said Salem. “The students are the best part of my day. They motivate me, truly. When I graduated my last words were ‘I’m never coming back to this place again!’ Now I return happily every morning.”
Hialeah Miami Lakes honors Alejandro Diaz-Rubio as the Rookie Teacher of the Year By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Alejandro Diaz-Rubio, a native of Spain who came to the United States at four years old, grasped the English language and made a home in Miami Lakes. DiazRubio attended HML and graduated in the class of 1992 before moving on to FIU to earn a bachelor’s in Advertising and Marketing and then a career in public relations. After working at the Coconut Grove Times and the South Miami Post, Diaz-Rubio found himself using his talents as a liaison between lenders and property managers in construction management. During this time DiazRubio began substituting at local schools before a moment of clarity came to him in 2004. “My wife’s former principal, whom I respected very much, brought me an interesting opportunity,” said Diaz-Rubio. “I began a career in education. It has been 13 years and I love what I do. I could not picture myself outside the classroom.” Diaz-Rubio teaches English, Journalism, Yearbook, and serves as the junior class sponsor. He has previously taught other grade levels in English. He was selected as Hialeah Miami Lakes’ Rookie Teacher of the Year and he credits this accomplishment to his wife your hometown 305-817-4015

ALEJANDRO DIAZ-RUBIO and teaching partner, Elena Sanchez, and a great administration. As a father to two young girls, Allyson and Alexis, Diaz-Rubio recognizes the invaluable effort and results that parental involvement can bring to students to make them well-rounded intellects. “We are lucky to live in an area that highlights so much of the world but unfortunately, so many kids here in South Florida have never been to the beach, don’t know what the inside of a museum looks like, and have never been north of I-595 or south of the Dolphin expressway. The more students are exposed to diversity and a culture different from theirs, the more likely they are to accept it and yearn for more,” said DiazRubio.

Miami Dade College’s North Campus hosts ‘Stomp the Yard’ for high school seniors The urban artistic movement of stepping and dancing will come to life at Miami Dade College’s (MDC) North Campus during the first annual Stomp the Yard at 10 a.m., Friday, January 20, allowing local high school seniors to get a taste of college life in the process. The North Campus is located at 11380 N.W. 27 Avenue. The 2007 movie, Stomp the Yard, which highlighted stepping competitions at a college campus, brought the dance style to the masses. This event exemplifies MDC North Campus’s commitment to Miami’s urban students and is in keeping with a long and rich tradition in African-based communities that use movement, words and sounds for ethnic and artistic expression. “This event provides our students with a taste of campus life
that will enrich their cultural exposure while obtaining assistance with college related matriculation matters that will steer them well on their way to educational and academic success in college,” said Dr. Malou C. Harrison, North Campus president. This event will showcase MDC’s North Campus feeder high schools including the North Miami Beach Drumline and Drill Team, Miami Norland Senior High’s Dynasty Step Team, the Alonzo and Tracy Mourning Dance Team, William H. Turner Technical Arts High School’s Voices of Expression, and the MDC North Campus’s own Alpha Dance Team. To participate in the event or to obtain additional information, contact Shantelle Maxwell at 305237-1673.

Professor Richard Raleigh celebrates 50 years at St. Thomas University When professor Richard Raleigh started teaching at St. Thomas University in 1966, assignments were done on typewriters, not computers; research was done at the library, not on the internet; music was heard on the radio. not Spotify; and St. Thomas University, known as Biscayne College, was graduating its first class. Fifty years later, Detroit-native Raleigh remains dedicated to the university and his students, and says living through the university’s growth and transformations has brought him much happiness throughout the years. “Being part of the evolution of St. Thomas University, from its beginnings as a small men’s college to the thriving co-ed university it is today, has been the great joy of my life,” Raleigh said. In addition to being a professor of English and the Humanities, he is a published poet whose work has appeared in more than two dozen literary quarterlies, and is recognized as one of the earliest members of the Hemingway Society. He is also the university’s resident historian on all things St. Thomas – from the university’s founding and its Augustinian roots – to its expansion into the St. Thomas University of today. In the classroom is where Raleigh has truly left his mark. Aside from being voted STU professor of the year nine times, students and alumni all agree that Raleigh’s passion for literature
