Town will hold same property tax rate for sixth year; but $1 million in services unfunded By The Miami Laker staff Town of Miami Lakes is proposing the same rate for property taxes for the sixth consecutive year but more than $1 million for municipal services might go unfunded unless the town can find the money elsewhere or cut other services depending on what’s important to lawmakers and residents. According to a budget overview with preliminary figures for Miami Lakes’ spending plan for 2016-2017, $1.8 million of services were included in the spending plan but without any funding, including $500,000 for litigation services, $292,670 for two additional police officers, $85,000 for removal and replacement of black olive trees and $35,000 for youth and senior citizens programs. The budget overview doesn’t specify the cause for the lack of funding but Miami Lakes’ economic future has been cloudy since Mayor Michael Pizzi filed two lawsuits against the town for his attorney fees from his reinstatement case ($460,000) and
A Look Inside:
public corruption trial ($2.5 million). The town is spending money to fight the corruption trial lawsuit and its own litigation against the insurance carrier which refused to pay the mayor’s legal bills. In June, Councilmember Frank Mingo said $2.5 million constitutes 15 percent of the town’s budget. Town Manager Alex Rey and his staff have proposed to keep the 2.3518 rate for property taxes that would generate $6.3 million, which is an increase from $5.9 million for last year. Miami Lakes, which has $15.7 million in general fund revenues, is focusing on beautification and plans to spend at least $822,000 on projects for the N.W. 154 Street corridor, N.W. 67 Avenue and 138 Street, N.W. 67 Avenue at the Palmetto Expressway, N.W. 87 Avenue and 138 Street, the West Lake Neighborhood Reforestation Program, and beautification for N.W. 87 Avenue and 170 Street. The town’s biggest expense, the police department, increased

Goleman’s William Nodal graduates M-D Schools Police Explorer program Barbara Goleman High student William Nodal was among a group of cadets who recently completed the Miami-Dade Schools Police Department’s Explorers Academy Training program with an opportunity to learn about a career in law enforcement. Students were engaged in an extensive training program, which is held each summer, including gaining insight into police work through first-hand experience, assisting police professionals in a variety of departmental and community activities. Nodal and other young Explorers participated in crime prevention projects, social and community events, law enforcement relating training, competitions, ride along programs, and parades and fundraising events. The program was an experience Nodal said he will always remember, piquing his interest in a career in law enforcement after he finish-
es college. “The Academy was the best experience I have ever had,” he said. “Not only did we learn in the classroom but got the hands on experience which pushed it a lot further.” Nodal, 18, finished the Academy with the rank of captain. “Through a great leader, it was an honor being named captain ,” he said. “We all went through some much and struggled on what we accomplished. If had the chance, I would do it all over again.” Nodal said the training also included rigorous exercises to stay fit, training courses, and visits to Miami International Airport and the Sea Port to see how law enforcement agents handle security and demonstrated life-saving issues. “I met so many police officers,” Nodal said. “They did some amazing things.”
Nodal said he plans on enrolling at Miami-Dade College and later attend Florida International University to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in forensic science or criminal justice. He plans to become a police officer and then work for the FBI. “I love to help people and my heart is in law enforcement,” Nodal said. “It’s a very dangerous job but what better way to lay your life on the line for a friend.” Nodal plans to stay active with Explorer Post No. 115 at Goleman High School, one of three locations for Police Explorers meetings throughout the school year.

Leandro Hernandez executes Eagle Scout project Leandro Hernandez, a member of Miami Lakes’ Boy Scout Troop 49, is seeking the highest rank in scouting, Eagle. As part of his requirements, Hernandez, who been with the troop for seven years, must plan, direct and execute a service project
that benefits his community. His Eagle project is to build a square concrete pond with concrete benches, flowers/plants and tile connecting from the benches to the pond at his church, Miami Lakes United Methodist, 14800 N.W. 67 Avenue.
He said the project will provide a nice sitting area for the community to enjoy. “It will also cover the ditch that is currently there,” he said. To accomplish his goal of becoming an Eagle Scout, Hernandez needs to raise $1,200
and has set up a GoFundMe.com account seeking donations. He must complete the project by October 10. Hernandez, 17, is an eleventhgrade student at Hialeah Education Academy Charter School. Currently, Hernandez was chosen to lead a high adventure team as part of Mark Anderson’s Team Expedition in Washington state. The adventures include water rafting, mountain climbing and hiking.
Boy Scout Troop 49 is the oldest troop in Miami Lakes, celebrating its Golden anniversary this year. The group is always recruiting new scouts and volunteers. The troop meets each Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Miami Lakes Youth Center located at 6075 Miami Lakes Drive East. For more on Hernandez’s GoFundMe.com account, call 786355-5658.

St. Thomas University’s Melony Poviones and her teammate, Leah Morales, representing Team USA in Footvolley, won their qualifying matches in the U.S. Olympics trials in Seaside, Oregon and advanced to the summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro in a demonstration event. “There’s really nothing better than getting to travel and continue doing what you love,” Poviones said. Footvolley has been around for years but it’s finally getting the world exposure on the world stage this Summer. The hybrid sport mixes soccer and beach volleyball. However, unlike volleyball, players aren’t allowed to use their hands and arms, and the techniques of soccer helps players, as they put together combinations using their legs, chests and heads. Teams are allowed three touches per possession and attempt to get the ball over the net and land in their opponents’ boundaries. Poviones and Morales competed against pairs from Miami, Santa Cruz, California; Washington D.C. and Portland, Oregon during the tournament and emerged victorious to earn the trip to Rio de Janeiro.

Jose Marti MAST Academy ushers in new programs Jose Marti MAST Academy 612 announced that 18 graduates from the class of 2016 were awarded Florida Bright Futures Scholarships. The Florida Bright Futures Scholarship Program establishes three lottery-funded scholarships to reward Florida high school graduates for high academic achievement. There are two kinds of scholarships: the Florida Academic Scholars (FAS) and the Florida Medallion Scholars (FMS). Jonathon Milian, JMMA’s Cap Advisor said “We received a record number of students who qualified for Bright Futures in our short history. From our 44 graduates, 18 of them received the Florida’s Bright Futures
Scholarship. That’s a huge accomplishment!” Additionally, the school is looking forward to the 2016-2017 school year where innovative courses and programs that enable students to master useful skills and more elective courses will be added to the existing selection of classes. Among the new classes are a middle and high school computer science program taught by an industry certified computer science teacher. The high school selection will include AP Art History, AP Research, additional forensic and anatomy classes, botany, drama and creative writing. Computer science fuels technological innovation and drives
career growth, but waiting until college to learn the basics could mean a missed opportunity. The school has a strong partnership with Cisco Systems and through this partnership, high school students received tablets purchased by Cisco and participated in a HITEC national conference held at the Intercontinental Hotel in Downtown Miami. During this conference students were able to uniquely explore the convergence of scientific disciplines and technologies. The computer science class visited the HITEC (Hispanic IT Executive Conference) earlier this year. The students listened to Hispanic executives describe their career paths in information technology, aero-

the National Honor Society, the Spartan Ambassador Society, and student government, and Orfano is part of the Spartan Sword and Shield program for elite students. As part of the seminar, Orfano and Pereda listened to keynote speakers who talked about serving the community and bettering ones’ self. They participated in teambuilding activities, such as working together to build a contraption to drop an egg without breaking it, along with group discussions with the other students in attendance. “My favorite activity was the group reflection because it made me think about the effects the activities had and how I could
become a better person,” said Orfano. Orfano says that the biggest lessons he learned at the HOBY Seminar were that personal leadership is important to becoming an important leader in society and that being a better person involved setting personal goals to reach higher potentials. The seminar was not just dedicated to self-improvement, as Orfano and Pereda helped prepare 10,000 meals to feed children in South Florida through a partnership with the Feeding Children Everywhere organization.

Gazitua graciously helped in providing the space for the event, and he was present at the Happy Hour mingling with fellow alumni. The Pace Alumni Association will be hosting another Spartan Happy Hour later in 2016 in
Miami-Dade County for those who might have been too far south to make it to Pembroke Pines. More information will come out as the day approaches. The Pace Classes of 1976, 1986, 1996, and 2006 will be having their reunions in the coming months as well. The Pace Class of 1996 20-year reunion takes place on September 24 at Pace, the Class of 1976 40-year reunion takes
place on October 10 at Pace, and the Class of 1986 30-year reunion also takes place on October 10, but outside of Pace. Details and a date for the Pace Class of 2006’s 10year reunion have yet to be announced. For more information on the Class of 2006 and other events, contact Alumni director Melanie Otero at motero@pacehs. com.
