Miami Lakes recently awarded a $1.8 million contract for work to begin on the new Optimist Park Clubhouse. Construction is scheduled to begin this month on the new, modern clubhouse building that will provide the Town with much needed indoor public recreational space and serve as a home for the Miami Lakes Optimist Club. The original clubhouse was demolished in September 2013. “Within the next few weeks, the Town will be breaking ground on our state-of-the-art designed Optimist Park Clubhouse,” said Mayor Wayne Slaton. “We are excited about the amenities that this new facility will provide to our sports teams and all our athletic programming. This is just the beginning of our total redesign and long awaited makeover for our ball park. We look forward to

Locally, the Miami Lakes Express office spent time working and serving at Feeding South Florida and was able to donate more than 100 pounds of non-perishable food through a food drive that was held leading up to a day of volunteer service. “Brand It Blue Day allowed the entire Express family to come together to help the communities we work and live in,” said Michael Huffaker, Miami Lakes

Express franchisee. “Thanks to our clients and associates, we were able to help Feeding South Florida to fight hunger.” As Express continues its mission to put a million people to work annually, the company will continue to volunteer and serve the community and people that support them. “We wouldn’t be where we are today without the businesses and people who have supported us, so we’re really looking forward to giving and serving the people of Miami Lakes even more,” Huffaker said. M. L. Chamber hosts tech expert Rick Ewart at July luncheon session Rick Ewart, the CEO of IsleCall Communications, is the guest speaker for the Miami Lakes Chamber of Commerce’s monthly membership luncheon on Wednesday, July 9 at Don Shula’s Hotel. Ewart oversees the operations of both Ewart Technologies and its telecom division, IsleCall Communications. IsleCall was formed to extend the innovative solutions that Ewart Technologies has been bringing to small businesses since 1997 into the telecommunications arena. As a CPA and CISSP, Ewart has over 15 years of experience helping credit unions engineer solutions for their IT infrastructures that improve their resilience and efficiency. Often, these improvements also result in cost savings. Ewart formed IsleCall Communications to give the company access to voice technologies that it could leverage to provide similar efficiencies to its client’s voice communications. As a “boutique” communications provider, IsleCall is focused on applying available technologies to the customer’s unique needs rather than forcing the client to conform to a particular package of services or delivery method. Today, IsleCall Communications is providing voice service to customers ranging from Key West to Jacksonville and throughout the west coast of Florida. Ewart will be discussing some of the ways small businesses can leverage VoIP technologies to provide a host of benefits ranging from cost efficiencies, flexibility in operations, increased professionalism, and even disaster

recovery. Just like no single solution can fit all sizes of businesses, Ewart will discuss the different ways VoIP can be deployed, how different sized businesses can best benefit from the different deployment methods, and also what some of the common pitfalls can be. Networking starts at 11:30 a.m. with lunch served at 12 noon. Deadline to reserve is Thursday, July 3 at 2:00 p.m. For more information on this or any other Miami Lakes Chamber event, contact Marta Diaz at 305556-2212 or email mdiaz@miami lakeschamber.com.

Annette Hungler, Troop 306 Scout Master Nelson Erazo, and Troop 566 Scout Master Sean Schwinghammer. The Eagle Scout rank is the highest honor that a Scout may achieve, as well as a commitment. “This award is one of honor and responsibility,” said Troop 660 Scout Master Robert Beguiristain. “As Eagle Scouts, you have assumed a solemn obligation to do your duty to God, to Country, to your fellow Scouts, and to mankind in general.” To earn this rank, a Scout must spend a great deal of time and effort throughout his scouting career and culminate in completing a project serving the community. Aquino’s project consisted of rejuvenating and beautifying the facade and gardens of a local school. Guio’s project was the design and building of acoustical panels to enhance the functionality of a teaching hall of Miami Lakes United Methodist Church. Founding members of Troop 660, both new Eagle Scouts have a bright future ahead. Aquino is going to college and obtain a management degree to run a successful business in the art industry. Guio is planning to attend the University of Chicago to obtain a bachelor’s degree in Applied Math and Economics. Boy Scout and Cub Scout 660 troops meet at 7 p.m. every Thursday at Miami Lakes United Methodist Church on the corner of Miami Lakes Drive and Ludlam Road.

School Board approves three Perla T. Hantman proposals The Miami-Dade School Board unanimously approved three items proposed by Board Chair Perla Tabares Hantman at its regular meeting last week. The members of the 2014 Miami-Dade County Legislative Delegation were recognized for their help toward achieving fair and equitable funding for the school district. “I commend the Legislative Delegation of Miami-Dade for the strong support given to MiamiDade County Public Schools and for sponsoring an increase to fund public education in Florida for about $574 million,” said Hantman. The School Board voted in favor of the feasibility of implementing South Florida Commuter Services' School Pool Program, a free service, to alleviate traffic congestion around public schools

and increase safety. This free service already benefits more than 50 schools in South Florida. The Board also endorsed the 5E School Assessment Tool developed by the University of Miami WalkSafe and BikeSafe programs. Six schools were recognized for their participation in the pilot program: Lawton Chiles Middle School, and North Dade Middle centers kindergarten through eighth grade, Eugenia B. Thomas K-8 Center, Carrie P. Meek / Westview K-8 Center, Nathan B.Young Elementary and Dr. Robert B. Ingram Elementary. “As an advocate for the safety of students, I commend both these programs for promoting safety and encouraging students and their families to carpool, bicycle or walk to and from school with other children,” Hantman noted.

Brian Rodriguez named to M-D Youth Commission Brian Rodriguez, the son of Miami Lakes Councilmember Nelson Rodriguez, was recently appointed to the Miami-Dade Youth Commission representing District 13. He was appointed by MiamiDade County Commissioner Esteban Bovo Jr. and sworn in by Miami Lakes Town Clerk Marjorie Tejeda Castillo at Miami Lakes Town Hall. The Miami-Dade County Youth Commission (MDCYC) provides young people with a vehicle to participate in the process of county government. Motivated students from each commission district represent and articulate the needs of youth in Miami-Dade County and advise the mayor and county commissioners on matters affecting the youth population. Through the collaborative efforts of Miami-Dade governmental officials and their departments, Miami-Dade County Public Schools, and other community supporters, the MDCYC is a positive model for young people. Officials hear first hand what concerned teens have to say, have the opportunity to educate them about the governmental process, and create a symbiotic relationship between youth and the County. The MDCYC is staffed by the Miami-Dade County Juvenile Services Department (JSD) which also implements the county’s Violence Intervention Project (VIP). The youth commissioners recently visited Head Start Centers throughout Miami-Dade County to talk to preschoolers about the importance of reading, and to distribute books to the young readers so that they may start their own home libraries this summer. While at the centers, the Youth Commissioners took the opportunity to share some of their favorite childhood books with the children by reading to them. “We are very proud of Brian,” said Rodriguez. Added TejedaCastillo: “We are so proud to have such an amazing young man representing District 13.”

News and Notes from the Town of Miami Lakes Construction to restart on Youth Center Old Glory deadline extended Work on the Youth Center at East Park is scheduled to restart as the Town of Miami lakes recently reached an agreement with a surety company that guaranteed the performance bond for the original contractor that defaulted on the $1 million project. In March 2013, the Town halted work on the Youth Center after staff noticed that work was not in accordance with the approved plans and exhibited poor workmanship that was going to affect the life expectancy, performance of the building, and the safety of its users. Negotiations of the agreement with the surety company further delayed the project. With the agreement now reached, Town staff and consultants determined the best course of action to remediate the defective

work was a partial demolition which includes most of the roof and the top half the exterior walls. A bid request for demolition was put out and is due by July 14. Then, the Town Council will award the contract and the work is estimated to take 30 days. Staff is now in the process of preparing bid request documents for the continuation of the work. All of the Youth Center work is being conducted under the original amount of funds budgeted and allocated for the project. “A Youth Center is important to the well-being of every thriving community,” said Mayor Wayne Slaton. “Finally the Town will now have one to call its own.” The new Youth Center will be a state-of-the-art facility that will serve the current and future gener-

Miami Lakes Surgery Center celebrates 7 years By Jessica Martinez Director of Business Development Miami Lakes Surgery Center To many, the suburban town of Miami Lakes conjures images of trendy boutiques, chic restaurants and bistros and European-style, New Town-inspired architecture. The rapidly expanding community is spurring an influx of new residents and business owners to the area. New primary care and specialty physician practices are emerging every day.

A hidden gem exists within the medical community of Miami Lakes that has yet to be discovered by new residents, physicians and travelers to the area. The Miami Lakes Surgery Center, the only multi-specialty free-standing outpatient surgery center in the area, still remains a novelty to some. Girl Scouts plan ‘Fit Fair’ for Aug. 9 When you are 14 and you want to help save the world, what would you do? You can start in your own community, and if you are a Cadette Girl Scout, you can work on a Silver Award project. That’s the plan for Girl Scouts Chloe Schwinghammer and Emily Wong of Troop 248, local girls who want to reduce obesity by promoting health and fitness. The Scouts have created the “Fit Fair,” an event that will allow Miami Lakes parents and children to meet and interact with businesses and organizations in the community that promote some type of fitness. From sports programs to dance schools to camping organi-

zations, many groups are set to participate and explain their programs, prices and offer information. The “Fit Fair” is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, August 9, at Miami

Lakes Picnic Park West, 15151 N.W. 82 Avenue. Miami Lakes businesses that promote some type of fitness and are interested in participating may contact 248gstroop@gmail.com.

Summer is here! June 21 marked the official first day of summer, in other words, it’s time for ocean fun! Despite the almost perfect weather year-round, it’s during the summer that Miami-Dade residents take advantage of the sweltering heat and beaming sun to head down to the beach. However, it’s vital that beachgoers are aware of beach safety guidelines for the well-being of themselves and others. It’s important to remember that an ocean is a body of water in a constant state of motion and changes. So, it’s for your own safety that your should learn how to swim. Nonetheless, inexperienced swimmers or young children should wear life jackets in and around the ocean. Additionally, beachgoers with children should always keep their eyes on them and have them at

We Stand Corrected The June 20 issue inadvertently omitted information in an article featuring the Wall of Presidents at Barbara Goleman Senior High School. In addition to Jordan Thompson, Bryan Benaiges, former Student Government president, is also honored on the wall, and former Student Government and Student Class presidents from past years will be honored as well. In the June 20 issue, local medical practitioner Ruth Schobel's name was spelled incorrectly, and her office is located at 7480 Fairway Drive.

arms distance. When first getting into the ocean, don’t dive in, but step in. By diving in head first, you risk injuring your neck. Next, check the water for deepness and any obstacles. If getting into the water with a young child, hold their hand. Any sudden change in surf direction can separate them from you. Furthermore, remember that you must never swim alone and always swim at a lifeguard-protected beach. Miami-Dade County’s public beaches (Crandon Park and Haulover Park) are professionally guarded year-round. In Florida, there is a uniform warning flag system that is used on all public beaches. This allows beachgoers to understand if there any hazards in the water. The following defines what each warning flag signifies: • Double Red Flag: The beach is closed to swimmers. • Single Red Flag: High hazard due to high surf and/or strong currents. • Yellow Flag: Medium hazard due to moderate surf and/or hazards. • Green Flag: Low hazard and calm conditions. • Purple Flag: There is dangerous marine life present. The leading surf hazard for all beachgoers is rip currents. Rip currents are narrow, fast-moving channels of water that travel from the shore towards the ocean and can occur on any beach with breaking waves. Every year, rip currents are accountable for over 100 drowning fatalities and more than 80 percent of all beach water rescues. It’s crucial to understand that rip currents pull swimmers away from the shore, not underwater; hence, beachgoers must know the basics of what to do if ever caught in one. If ever caught in a rip current: • Remain calm to conserve energy (drowning due to rip currents occur so often because swimmers are unable to stay afloat long enough to swim back to shore). • Don’t fight the current. Instead of swimming against it, swim out of it in a parallel direction that follows the shoreline. Once you are out of the current, swim towards the shore. • If unable to swim out of the current, float or calmly tread water to conserve energy until you are out of the current. Once out, swim towards the shore. • If you are unable to reach the shore, draw attention to yourself. Face the shore, wave you arms and yell for help. • If you ever see someone in trouble, get help from a lifeguard.

RESULTS

the miami laker

305-817-4015

If a lifeguard is unavailable, call 91-1 and attempt to stop the drowning process by throwing an object that floats to the victim. Another hazard to keep an eye out for is marine life. When one thinks of marine life, the first image that comes up is sharks. However, you’re more likely to encounter jellyfish, man-o-wars and stingrays. These animals are not usually life-threatening unless you are allergic to them or their stings inhibit your capability to swim. If you ever come across any of these sea animals, inform lifeguards for monitoring purposes. Finally, keep in mind basic sun safety tips such as applying sunscreen with a SPF 30 or higher to protect against UVA and UVB rays which should be reapplied every two hours and avoid peak hours between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. By following these guidelines, you can assure that your beach experience is enjoyable and safe as living in Miami, the weather is rarely ever not perfect for a beach outing.

Eric Acosta is named new principal at Hialeah Miami Lakes Senior High Eric Acosta, the new principal at Hialeah Miami Lakes Senior High School, brings a wealth of education experience to an “A” school that serves kids from the cities of Hialeah and Miami Lakes. Pace’s annual Drama Camp sees acting excellence By Rene D. Basulto Special to The Miami Laker Taking place across two weeks from June 9-20, Monsignor Edward Pace High School’s annual summer acting camp featured a mix of current and incoming Pace students along with students from

middle school and other private schools. The camp instructed students, including those new to acting, on what they needed to be a part of any theatre program. Students took part in acting and musical theatre workshops, including workshops on improv, pan-

tomime, singing, stagecraft, and theatrical makeup. Classes took place at the Spartan Center, where students trained and practiced for their final performances to be given in front of their parents and friends. As students practiced on the Spartan Center stage, lead teacher of Pace’s Academy for Performing Arts, Cristina Pla-Guzman, gave feedback on how to act out certain scenes. For one scene that involved two students acting as kid sisters fight-

ing over a sand castle competition, Pla-Guzman not only gave feedback on character motivation, but even began mimicking how students should emote on stage. Students also received feedback from their fellow camp members and five Pace alumni who each taught a workshop revolving around a specific skill. One of those alumni teachers was Jessica Gorwky, who graduated from Pace in 2009 and now attends the New World School of the Arts in downtown Miami where she is majoring

in musical theater. “Mrs. Pla-Guzman is the one who inspired me to become an actor, so I wanted to do the same and inspire the youth of today,” said Gorwky. “Once the students learn that all the power is within, they will be successful.” For information concerning Pace High School’s other academies and class enrollment, call 305-623-7223 or visit www.pacehs.com.

M-D School Board approves informing community about Florida’s tax-free holiday As proposed by the School Board Chair Perla Tabares Hantman, the Miami-Dade School Board unanimously voted to have the District inform the community about the three-day tax-free weekend that was authorized by the Florida Legislature for basic school supplies, clothing and certain electronic equipment in anticipation of the new school year. “The upcoming sales tax holiday is a great opportunity for families to be able to save personal funds for the new school year. The

District should inform as many people as possible so the community may benefit,” said Hantman. The sales tax holiday begins at 12:01 a.m. on Friday, August 1, and ends at 11:59 p.m. Sunday, August 3. The Legislature has extended sales tax exemption to a number of technological learning tools that students will find useful in today's digital learning environment. Some of the exempted items include personal computers, ereaders, tablets, software and accessories.

Garcia family celebrates their twins’ 15th birthday on Independence Day By Roselind Romero The Miami Laker staff This July 4th, Miami Lakes residents Barbara and Raysol Garcia will celebrate the nation's independence day along with the 15th birthday of their fraternal twins, Hannah and Gabriel Garcia. The twins, which their parents call the “miracle twins,” for both the manner and conditions in which they were born, entered the world amid fireworks erupting from Milander park near a Hialeah hospital. Barbara Garcia, who has an extensive heart history due to a congenital heart defect, has undergone three open heart surgeries in her lifetime, and the then recent implantation of a pacemaker, making her pregnancy with Hannah and Gabriel extremely high risk. The twins were both born healthy and happy, to the relief of Barbara and her husband. The family eventually welcomed a third child, Samuel, a few years later. All three children have attended Bob Graham Education Center and the twins are now at
