In a memo to council members, town staff and residents, Cid said Ruano is the ideal candidate to serve on the Town Council until next year’s general election and is asking the community for support following his difficult decision. on his colleagues’ confirmation to make it official. Ruano filed papers to run for a seat on the Town Council in the 2018 election before Cid picked her to replace Lama. “After much thought, consideration and prayer, I have decided to announce my intention to nominate Mrs. Marilyn Ruano to fill the vacancy,” Cid said. “Expressing my intention in advance allows the public the opportunity to meet the nominee in a transparent fashion. Mrs. Ruano understands firsthand the importance of being an independent voice working for all Miami Lakers. She possesses incredible integrity, strength, and the heart of a public servant.” (Please See Page 4)

Area residents air gripes at Blasting Town Hall By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff One northwest Miami-Dade man said he thought his roof was about to cave in following an explosion that rocked his entire home. Another local resident said the blast knocked her out of her chair. And another explosion sent one kid from the living room to the kitchen, slightly injuring him. A group of residents from Miami Lakes, Palm Springs North, Country Club of Miami and Broward County shared their gut wrenching stories about the impact the rock mining industry’s blasting has had on their lives. During a town hall meeting in Miami Lakes on the
Construction Mining in the Miami-Dade Lake Belt Region, the equally frustrated residents turned to officials from the state’s Fire Marshall Office, which regulates blasting, in hopes of ceasing the damages to their properties. Some residents said the explosions felt like an earth quake, having seismic consequences with cracks in their pools and driveways, and the walls inside their homes. “This has been going on for years, causing my house to shake and glasses and windows are rattling,” said Country Club of Miami resident Barbara Hagen. “That means the frequency of the blast is too high.” In an effort to find some solutions to the homeowners’ problem, the state has allocated
Main Street Players offer Bad Jews opening July 21 The Main Street Players opens the dark comedy Bad Jews by Joshua Harmon on July 21 at the Main Street Playhouse, 6766 Street. Bad Jews explores the relationships between three cousins who are brought together following the death of their grandfather, a Holocaust survivor. Conflict ensues as the trio fight over a “chai” that belonged to their grandfather. As Daphna and Liam battle over who is more deserving of the memento, Liam’s girlfriend Melody and brother Jonah try to steer clear of the fighting. Despite the serious overtones of death, identity, and religion, Bad Jews will delight audiences with its dark humor. The cast
includes Hannah Benitez as Daphna Feygenbaum, Joseph Paul Pino as Liam Haber, Matthew Ferro as Jonah Haber, and Kimmi Johnson as Melody. The show is directed by Robert Coppel and production manager is Clara Lyzniak. Bad Jews runs from July 21 to August 13, with performances on Fridays and Saturdays at 8:30 p.m., and Sundays at 2 p.m. Tickets are $30 for adults, and $25 for students, seniors, and military personnel. Tickets for Theatre League members with I.D. are $20. Tickets may be purchased in advance at www.mainstreetplayers.com or at the door 60 minutes prior to showtime.
$325,000 to study the impact of blasting and determine if the rules need to be changed to prevent more property damages. Julius Halas, division director of the Fire Marshall Office and a former fire chief in Sarasota, said the state agency, which falls under Chief Financial Officer Steve Atwater, budgeted the money last year for the study before Governor Rick Scott vetoed the funding. This year, they held their breath when Scott scrutinized the budget and restored the funding in the state’s $83 million budget. Halas said the Fire Marshall Office has been flooded with emails, letters, phone calls and personal visits from residents affected by the blasting, which makes materials to build roads throughout the state of Florida. “Since our meeting in Tallahassee, we have been working on this project ever since,” said Hollis, who was accompanied by some of his colleagues from the Fire Marshall Office to the town hall meeting. “I know most of you thought we weren’t listening but we were and are doing something about it.” Bureau of Fire Prevention Chief Casia Sinco said the rock mining industry, including chief miner White Rock Quarries, are blasting within federal and state guidelines. She said the residents are impacted by the blasts since
their homes are near the mines and lakes, as the wave of energy passes through the water and causes the vibrations on their properties. “It can cause major damages,” she said. Sinco indicated the blasting frequencies could be obsolete, citing a U.S. Bureau of Mines Report from the 1980s that identified in a study a mandate the rock miners must follow for their operations. Joe Crownover, a consultant with IGS, which monitors blasting and vibrations, outlined the level of explosions that cause minor and major damages to homes depending on the types of walls. He said the peak particle velocity of 0.50 would cause little damage to plaster walls and 0.75 for drywall structures has the same effect. But a peak particle velocity of 2.00 would likely cause more damage and 7.60 may have 50 percent chance of major damage. “You can’t see it, but you can feel the effects and see the damages,” Crownover said. Until the study is completed, Sinco said residents can file a suit under the Homeowners Protection Act if blasting caused damages to their properties. Residents claims would be heard during the Division of Administration Hearings and an administrative judge would decide whether homeowners

would be compensated for the damages. “But you must have proof like pictures of the damages to your properties to present at the hearings,” she said. A northwest Miami-Dade resident said another claims process is unfair to homeowners since the rock mining industry is the judge and jury on a homeowner’s claim. “They pick the inspectors to come to our homes and they say the cracks and damages happened because your home is settling,” she said. Miami Lakes Mayor Manny Cid said the study on the impact of blasting is the biggest victory for residents who are hoping the results would spur the Fire Marshall Office to change the regulations to benefit them instead of the rock miners. “This is a big step,” Cid said. “It’s a real problem and it’s getting worse.” Miramar Mayor Wayne Messam said his residents are sharing the same experience of the damages blasting has caused to their homes. He said they can’t stop the rock miners from blasting but they are seeking a compromise. “How can we coexist,” Messam said. “We crossed one hurdle with the resource to conduct a study to address the issue that is impacting our communities. If we continue to work together, I’m sure we can come up with a resolution.”

Cid plans to nominate Ruano for Council seat (Continued from Page 1) Lama’s resignation is effective on July 25, and according to the town’s charter, if six months or more remain in the unexpired term for Seat 3, the vacancy shall be filled by a nomination of the mayor made within 30 calendar days following the occurrence of the vacancy, which must be confirmed by council members. But if the Town Council is unable to reach a confirmation on Ruano, a special election must take place to fill Lama’s seat no later than 90 calendar days following the occurrence of the vacancy. According to her bio, Ruano, an accountant, and her husband moved to Miami Lakes in 1997, and she has been president of the Royal Palm Estates Homeowners Association since 2013. After she moved to Miami
Lakes, Ruano discovered her true calling, a strong advocate for education. She served on the Miami Lakes Education Advisory Board, which helped secure funding for tutoring classes and much needed educational programs at the town’s area schools, and promoting and encouraging a love of reading at an early age which is a “very” fulfilling experience. Her son is a student at Barbara Goleman High School. “Passionate about children and their education, I found my way into public service in 2007 when my son was first enrolled at Bob Graham Education Center,” she said. “Over the years, I have volunteered and served as treasurer of BGEC PTSA from 2007 to 2013, president of the Civic Engagement Academy Bobcat Law Society from 2014 to 2016, Educational
MARILYN RUANO Excellence School Advisory Council parent representative from 2015 to 2016 and currently serve on the Wellness Advisory Committee for Miami-Dade County Public Schools representing School Board member Perla Tabares Hantman.” Ruano added: “With over a
decade of community service, including regular attendance at Town Council meetings, I have voiced my concerns on matters affecting the future of Miami Lakes. I look forward to serving my community for many years. The past 10 years have been very rewarding and I know, in my heart, that the best is yet to come.” Ruano earned her Bachelor’s Degree at Florida Atlantic University and started her own accounting practice. She relocated her business to Miami Lakes in 2004. “I truly understand what it is to live, work and play in Miami Lakes,” she said. Most council members declined to offer their comments on Ruano, following the town attorney’s advice to avoid any possible Sunshine implications. Lama, who will not vote on Ruano’s confirmation, said he’s happy about the mayor’s deci-
sion to nominate Ruano to fill his vacancy, bringing gender diversity to the council. “I know that this decision didn’t come without plenty of thought and prayer,” Lama said. “Setting aside much needed gender diversity for a moment, Marilyn Ruano is a qualified professional with over a decade of service to this town. She’s intelligent, articulate, fair and loves this town. I wanted to see a woman on the council as well, but it had to be the right woman and I’m pleased with the mayor’s decision.”

‘Geezer’ softball keeps octogenarians spirited The Miami Lakes “Geezers,” a group of several dozen local residents who some would consider are “past their prime,” are dedicated to continue enjoying regular Monday and Wednesday morning softball games at Miami Lakes Optimist Park. One of the prime motivators behind this committed group is former Miami Herald executive David Oliver who has become the official “scribe” of Geezer games and Geezer lore. In late May, after playing some recent games at other Optimist Park diamonds, Oliver reported that the Geezers returned to Miami Lakes and in a special pre-game ceremony, Geezer Bruce Davidson sand “You’ve Really Got a Hold on Me” to his fiancé Mary Lavoie to commemorate their purchase of engagement rings from Geezer Gary Snow at Snow’s Jewelers. Twenty-five gentlemen showed up for that game and were drafted into two squads: The “Visitors” included Alfred (A Rod) Rodriguez, Jose Caballero, Gilbert Alfonso, Iggy Escandon, Bob Jones, Jorge DeArmas, Mariano
Fernandez, Peter Fishel, Victor Fernandez, Angel Sosa, Vinnie Kaminski, Frank Weber and Oliver plus Rocky the Mascot. The “Homesters” included Angel Hernandez, Ernie Garcia, Luis “Giancarlo” Arencibia, Juan Iglesias, Jose Rivera, Carlos (CarGo) Gonzalez, Luis Calderin, Davidson, Lee Collins, Oscar Sauri, Alberto Sordo-Ramos, Terry (TKO) Kushi, and Mary the Cheerleader. After a flurry of hits and some outstanding defensive plays, the “Visitors” won the game 12-8. What is interesting about this congregation of die-hard athletes is the small group of octogenarians who continue their youth with a ball and bat. Included in that group are Peter Fishel, Vinnie Kaminski, Alberto Sordo-Ramos, Victor Fernandez and Angel Sosa. Fernandez, 83, and Sosa, 85, both started playing baseball at an early age in Cuba. Fernandez left Cuba in 1962 with his wife and two children. A third child was born in New York City where he played baseball in “The Spanish
Leagues of New York, Inc.” He moved to Miami in 1970 and worked as a Tool & Die maker and part-time Real Estate agent. Sosa left Cuba in 1963 and traveled to Mexico. He arrived in Miami in 1964 and for 17 years, worked as a Mechanical Maintenance Superintendent for Miami-Dade County Aviation Department. He retired in 1993. More than 25 years ago, the two played on the same team in Miami-Dade County including Union Central Life and Lavin Baby Center. Now, they are playing together again with the Geezers in Miami Lakes. Sosa considers this opportunity a blessing. At least three times, he has arrived at a Geezer game with tears in his eyes, reporting that the doctor told him he no longer could play softball due to a bad back, hernia and asthma. But he continues to come back. When Sosa and Fernandez play Geezer ball together, they may be well into their 80’s, but they play like they are still in their 30’s.
Giardino’s Gourmet Salads marks 3rd year at Park Centre Shops By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Miami Lakes’ own Giardino’s Gourmet Salads at 8008 N.W. 154th Street in the Park Centre Shops celebrated its third anniversary by gifting every 30th customer on June 30 with a $30 gift card. Giving back to the community is a theme that owners Lily Tudela, Jaime Mitrani and Robert Furth try to inject into their successful business venture, and they’re often spotted catering for local businesses or Town Council, or participating in events like Cars for a Cure and the Farmer’s Market. They also provided meals for a first responder’s appreciation luncheon. Out of 13 locations, the Miami Lakes Giardino’s has snagged and stayed at the number one spot for most profitable franchise since they first opened three years ago. Within the first year, they hit a million dollars in sales, repeated their triumph the second year and are poised to do the same for their third year. The restaurant was named “2016 Business of the Year” by the Town of Miami Lakes. “Our store opened with a lot of the new facets and features of what older stores were transitioning into,” said Tudela, “so ours really became the standard for the image and menu items.
GEEZERS ANGEL SOSA and VICTOR FERNANDEZ were members of the Lavin Baby Center team in Miami-Dade several decades ago. Sosa is kneeling (far right) and Fernandez is standing (far right).

Starbucks opens in Cypress Village Shopping Ctr. By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff For years coffee aficionados have been able to get their morning fuel at the Starbucks west of the Palmetto Expressway, but traffic concerns in Miami Lakes prompted the additional location at 7433 Miami Lakes Drive within the newly renovated Cypress Village Shopping Center. “We decided on this location in order to target the Miami Lakes residents on the other side of the Palmetto,” said store manager Christian Martinez.
“Traffic is very heavy in the morning so it is not easy for many residents to cross under the Palmetto to reach the Starbucks on the west side and then double back to catch the highway.” The new Starbucks, which is housed in a new building where the former Blockbuster store was located, is an addition, not a move from the west side location at 8012 N.W. 154 Street in the Park Centre Shops. “The west side location is a longtime staple of the community and will not be closing
down, despite rumors,” said Martinez. “Both locations will stay open to serve the Miami Lakes community.” The east side location also features a drive-thru, a perk for time-strapped commuters to grab their coffee and go. The east side location held a grand opening in April where company partners, friends, family and several members from the Miami Lakes Town Council, including Mayor Manny Cid, attended a ribbon cutting event. The coffee shop boasts ample indoor and outdoor seat-
ing, a mish-mash of bar tables and smaller secluded tables, and despite the cosmopolitan nature of Starbucks franchises, locals have found a comfortable home here, fitting for the quaintness of a small town. “I am a Miami Lakes resident and I actually walk to the store from my home in under five minutes,” said Martinez. “I feel very fortunate to manage a store in my own neighborhood. I feel like every customer that walks in is a neighbor of mine and I have the privilege to connect with them and delight them on a daily basis.” Store hours and drive-thru hours are 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day except Friday and Saturday when closing time is at 10:30 p.m. Those looking for a relief from the sweltering summer heat while still indulging in a pick-me-up need look no further than the bestselling item on the menu: the Cold Brew. “The Cold Brew is steeped for 20 hours and makes for a really smooth cup of coffee,”
said Martinez. “We do sell it while supplies last, however, since the brewing process takes so long, we usually sell out daily, so we encourage all customers to come early.” Another favorite, Mallorca Sweet Bread, is a regional specialty for South Florida and is topped with powdered sugar. Summertime beverages on the menu now include the returning S’mores Frappuccino, and the new Midnight Mint Mocha Frappuccino. In the next two months, the stores will be releasing the all new drink flavors Berry Prickly Pear Frappuccino and the Mango Pineapple Frappuccino. “We have had a wonderfully positive reception from the community,” said Martinez. “Many of our neighbors have been expressing their excitement at having a new Starbucks with a drive-thru right by their homes.” To grab a cup of joe or for something a little more eclectic, visit the new east side Starbucks of Miami Lakes.

Miami-Dade Public Schools earn highest grades Miami-Dade County Public Schools’ (M-DCPS) students, teachers, schools and programs wrapped up the 2016-2017 school year with an impressive array of honors and achievements. For the first time since the State began issuing school performance grades in 1999, there is not a single district-managed “F” school in Miami-Dade County Public Schools, according to school performance grades released by the Florida Department of Education. “Today’s historic announcement is a testament to the transformational and collaborative work of students, teachers, employees, parents, and community stakeholders as well as the visionary leadership of our School Board,” said Superintendent of Schools
Alberto M. Carvalho. “The impossible has become the inevitable. For the first time since 1999, a span of nearly two decades, our school district and community celebrate an astonishing achievement – zero ‘F’ rated traditional public schools in Miami-Dade County and the elimination of failure for our students.” District 4 schools in the Miami Lakes area that achieved “A” grades were Miami Lakes K-8 Center, Hialeah Gardens Elementary School, Bob Graham Education Center, Miami Lakes Middle School, and Miami Lakes Educational Center. Hialeah Miami Lakes Senior High School, and Barbara Goleman Senior High School earned “B” grades. Neighboring school Mater Lakes Academy earned an “A”
grade as well. There were no “D” or “F” schools in District 4. School grade increases were at 32 percent, 12 percent decreased a letter grade, and 56 percent maintained the same letter grade. “District 4 schools continue to demonstrate consistent, strong performance as noted by today’s report,” said School Board member Perla Tabares Hantman. “ I congratulate all the teachers, students, parents
and principals for their hard work. I am very proud to represent District 4 schools.” Additionally MDCPS achieved a record-breaking graduation rate, is home to seven of the top 100 high schools in the country, and half of the schools in Florida’s Top 20 as ranked by U.S. News & World Report. The county also had a record number of associate degrees earned by high school gradu-
ates, and received more Distinguished and Model designations from the National Academy Foundation than any other school in the nation. Lastly, for the sixth straight year, the school district earned more Magnet of America Merit Awards than any other school district in the nation, totaling to 42 awards. and Opa Locka Airport. The Town Council voted to appear before the County Commission at its July 6 meeting to oppose any expansion to commercial flights at Opa Locka Airport. “It’s a serious matter because of the grave impact on the quality of life on our residents,” said Cid, who directed the town to write a letter to Heyman expressing the town’s position on her resolution. According to the resolution, both airports should be the leading engines for jobs creation in South Florida, given their size, ease of access to multiple locations within Miami-Dade, Broward and Monroes counties and their airfield capacity. The resolution also states that the county should work with developers or lessees to bring aviation and non-aviation related businesses to both airports to help them achieve their potential growth. The study, if approved by commissioners, would determine whether such services are the highest and best uses of the airports in terms of job creation and ensuring both airports remain available for aviation users consistent with federal law. For years, Miami Lakes residents were concerned about additional commercial and cargo flights at Opa Locka Airport but breathed a sigh of relief in 2001 when thenCounty Commissioner Miriam Alonso successfully sponsored a resolution to prevent additional flights at the airport.

Lakes resident and master belly dancer Virginia Mendez now offering classes By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff The holistic wellness center, Keep It In The Heart, at 8100 Oak Lane, Suite 405 in Miami Lakes, welcomes the talents of master belly dancer Virginia Mendez. A longtime resident of Miami Lakes, Mendez returned to offering classes in Miami Lakes after many years of touring around the world for performances leading to her respected status as a talented performer and teacher. To sign up call 786-391-3942 or email info@keepitintheheart.com. “I think most people see belly dancing in a particular manner, like what Shakira does, said Mendez. “What she does is mix belly dancing with hip hop, and movements are in a stylized fashion, not really authentic. Belly dancing is an art form that is part of a culture. Mendez first became interested in belly dancing, also known as Oriental Dance, when a friend suggested they take belly dancing classes. One class turned into several and she continued to study the art ever since. She has performed in prominent theaters and festivals around the world and is the premiere protege of Mr. Yousry Sharif, a world-renowned dancer, teacher, and choreographer in Egyptian folkloric dancing. “For me the dance expresses the feminine spirit and there is

Rep. Manny Diaz Jr. meets with Education Secretary Betsy Devos Florida State Representative Manny Diaz Jr., and his wife, Jennifer Diaz, discussed his education goals for the state of Florida with U.S. Department of Education Secretary Betsy Devos, at the Nation’s Capitol in Washington D.C. In Tallahassee, Diaz has been a strong advocate for education, sponsoring legislation this year to strengthen Florida’s educa-
tion system, which was a priority for House Speaker Richard Corcoran of Land O’ Lakes. Controversial House Bill 7069, which Governor Rick Scott signed into law, includes $30 million to ensure students with special needs maintain their scholarship through the Gardner Scholarship Program; funds to reward teacher excellence with bonuses; $140 mil-
lion to turn around failing schools through the Schools of Hope Program; and $400 million to charter schools and teacher bonuses. DeVos, former chairwoman of the Michigan Republican Party, is known for her support for school choice, school voucher programs and charter schools.

AUTISM SOCCER CLUB OF MIAMI LAKES was recognized by Florida Senator Marco Rubio for the exceptional support it provides to families and children in Florida’s communities. After launching in 2012 the group has encouraged children with autism to develop social skills in teamwork and bonding over soccer. The group was also recognized by Miami-Dade County Office of the Mayor and Board of County Commissioners for hosting socially conscious initiatives. Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez along with Chairman Esteban Bovo Jr. honored Autism Soccer with a proclamation. The nonprofit teaches a love for soccer, empowering over 2,000 children and adults free of charge. The group is trying to expand operations as there is a waiting list of over 250 children, and they are in the process of raising funds and expanding administrative duties to continue growing and continue reaching children with disabilities.

Pace High’s Jeter Downs taken in Former St. Thomas coach Mainieri in fifth trip to first round of Major League draft Paul the College World Series Fresh out of high school, Jeter Downs found himself in ecstasy, as his lifelong dream of playing professional baseball became well-founded. Downs, a recent graduate of Monsignor Pace High, was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in the first round (32nd overall pick) in the 2017 Major League Baseball draft last month. Downs said he was overcome with emotions after his childhood dream came true. “I’ve been dreaming about this since I was 10 years old,” the shortstop told reporters. “It has finally come and it still feels so surreal. I don’t even know what to say right now. I’m usually the one that has something to say when people come to me for help. Right now I can’t find the words.” As a shortstop, Downs, who turns 19 this month, recorded a superb performance in 2017, batted .422, belted 12 home runs and 35 RBI and led the Spartans to the regional final. He led Pace to the state championship game in 2016. For his performance in 2017, he was named a finalist for the 6A-1A male athlete of the year and named to The Miami Herald All-Dade First Team. A native of San Andreas in
JETER DOWNS the Carribean, Downs moved to Florida at a young age and has since stuck as one of the lauded prep infielders in the draft class, joining the likes of Nick Pratto, Nick Allen and Matt Seise. Downs is committed to play his college ball for the Miami Hurricanes, should he fall back on his pledge. According to the Reds’ scouting report, Downs has had a very good spring in the Miami area to raise his profile quite a bit. He’s a solid defensive shortstop with good range and a tick above-average
arm. Scouts love the way he swings the bat, consistently barreling up balls, and he has very good power, especially given his size, according to the scouting report. He should grow into more over-the-fence power and his base running acumen will allow him to pick up extra bases when he hits the gaps. While he’s just a slightly above-average runner, Downs is very aggressive on the base paths and likes to steal bases.
LOUISIANA STATE UNIVERSITY head baseball coach Paul Mainieri clinched his fifth trip to the College World Series but lost to the University of Florida in the championship game last week. The Gators snapped the Tiger’s 17 game-winning streak, including victories over Alabama, Auburn, Florida State and Mississippi State. Mainieri, a St. Thomas University alumnus and former head coach for the Bobcats baseball program, was inducted into the Bobcat Hall of Fame in 2009, and the school named their new baseball field in his honor in 2013. His last trip to Omaha was in 2009 when the Tigers won the National Championship over Texas. Mainieri’s accolades include winning the National Coach of the Year award on four occasions, and a one-time Skip Bertman award winner.

FIU has six baseball players taken in MLB draft, and 13 commitments in 2017 class Florida International University catcher J.C. Escarra led a class of Panthers’ players who were taken in the 2017 MLB draft when the Baltimore Orioles took the Mater Academy graduate in the 15th round. With six selections in the 2017 MLB Draft, FIU had the most players taken from Conference USA teams. In addition, FIU had 13 players from its No. 1-ranked 2017 signing class taken in the draft. The six Panthers drafted tied for the second most FIU players drafted in a single season in the program's 45-year history. “The players have worked extremely hard to play professional baseball,” FIU head coach Mervyl Melendez said. ”And the relationships we have built with the professional scouting community are very strong. That’s a good combination for our players to have the chance to play professional baseball.” FIU, which had two more drafted players than Southern Miss and Charlotte to lead CUSA, including Escarra, catcher Zack Soria who was drafted by the Atlanta Braves and pitcher Dominic LoBrutto, who went to the Boston Red Sox. Shortstop Irving Lopez was taken by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 19th round. Several relief pitchers made up the other two FIU draftees. Right-hander Franklin Van Gurp, who was a catcher last year, was picked by the San Francisco Giants in the 25th round. The Colorado Rockies, the Giants' National League West rival, took senior righthander Michael Agis in the 36th round. A large group of FIU baseball commentments were also taken in the MLB draft. “It's kind of bittersweet that you recruited talented players but at the same token you are going to lose some of them to the draft,” Melendez said. “We're hoping that we get five or six to come to FIU to better their stock and their position in
J.C. ESCARRA the draft. In three years they will be in much better shape.” Outfielder Heliot Ramos was a first round choice of the Giants. Catcher MJ Melendez, FIU coach Mervyl's son, went to the Kansas City Royals in the second round on Day 1 of the draft. Outfielder Johnathan Rodriguez was drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the third round and right-hander Wilberto Rivera was picked by the St. Louis Cardinals in the eighth round. Shortstop Justin Connell went to the Washington Nationals in the 11th round. Left-hander Jerryell Rivera Gonzalez (Los Angeles Angels) and outfielder Gabriel Rodriguez (Minnesota Twins) both also were drafted in the 11th round. Shortstop Abdiel Layer was taken by the Milwaukee Brewers in the13th round. A few rounds later a couple of signed FIU pitchers were drafted. Right-hander Christian Santana also went to the Brewers in the 15th round. Left-hander Logan Allen was picked by the Baltimore Orioles in the 16th round. In the 28th round, the Red Sox took outfielder Oraj Anu and one round later the Houston Astros drafted outfielder Andres Santana. The final FIU signee drafted was catcher Jose Garcia taken by the Red Sox in the 38th round.

Jacob Thomas, 7, wins Optimist Club’s flag football MVP award Not bad for a rookie. Jacob Thomas’ first ever experience playing organized sports is memorable, as the seven-year-old claimed the MVP award after leading his Giants flag football team at the Miami Lakes Optimist Club to an undefeated record, 10-0, and the spring league championship for the 5-7 age division. Thomas is a multi purpose player, playing quarterback, running back, wide receiver, and he helped his team out on defense.
The juggernaut was guided by his father and Giants head coach, Unri Thomas, who said his team’s season and son’s MVP performance was amazing. “It was exciting,” said Unri Thomas, who played college football at Bethune-Cookman University. “I saw myself in him watching him play.” Thomas said he was a little emotional after his son was named MVP. “I never won an MVP award, and to watch him dominate the
game that way was amazing,” said Thomas. Bashful and shy, the younger Thomas said: “I’m excited to win my first MVP award.” His father said Jacob’s knowledge and understanding of the game is impressive. “He loves to compete, he has talent and the speed,” Unri Thomas said. The Downtown Charter School student plans to continue playing football and will try his hand at basketball.

Three American graduates extend their dreams By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Among the many students that roam the halls at American Senior High School are seniors and Silver Knight nominees for 2017 Chinenye Ibemera, Aniah Watts and Sydney Vallejo. Despite their age, their knowledge and dreams extend far beyond the average high school teen. Ibemera was born in Antigua and Barbuda and came to the United States in the fourth grade. Whatever setbacks emigrating to a new country may cause, Ibemera’s academic history shows no gaps, and it seems she’s been on a endless wave of passionate pursuit. With a love for art, the same category for which she was nominated, Ibemera participated in community projects like Sunday School art classes at Hour of Resurrection Ministries. She dabbles in all mediums of art, though her portfolio shows a preference for watercolor. As a self-taught artist who first took up a brush one middle school summer long ago, Ibemera has continued to improve on her craft and finding ways to combine her love of art with the know-how she’s gained in her pre-medical classes. “I want to own my own hospital one day and paint murals on the walls,” said Ibemera. “I want to be a person who sends positive messages. Health is not just about the body, it’s about
the soul.” Ibemera also works with the pre-school students on campus in the Little Patriots program, teaching them arts and crafts. In her free time, Ibemera put together a handful of artworks that feature inspiring and encouraging messages such as “bloom where you are planted,” and she hands those out to the homeless, along with a meal. She finds the time to partake in these projects despite her academic schedule and her participation in National Honors Society (NHS), National English Honor Society (NEHS), Mu Alpha Theta, Future Educators of America, art club, SECME, National Art Honor Society, and the Pre-Med Honor Society. Aniah Watts’ interests range from medicine to financial literacy, and many things inbetween. As a general scholarship nominee for Silver Knights, her major service project was volunteering at Miami Dade Community Action and Human Services Department, where she helps people who receive eviction notices. She also spearheaded a project called Clothing Closet, a donation site for clothing for the homeless, where she donated a lot of her own clothes. During Thanksgiving, Watts prepares food for the homeless and as a peace ambassador at her school, she leads talks for underclassmen on topics like gun violence, conflict and reso-

lution, and college readiness. Apart from participating in NHS, National English Honor Society, Pre-Med Honor Society, and Beta Tau Zeta Chapter, Watts works with L.E.A.R.N. Pace graduate marks 12 years of perfect attendance By Rene D. Basulto Special to The Miami Laker There’s dedication, and then there’s not missing a day of school from kindergarten all the way through your final year of high school. Vladimir Rochebrun achieved just that with perfect attendance from kindergarten to his graduation from Monsignor Edward Pace High School last month. Rochebrun began his perfect attendance at St. Lawrence Catholic School, the school he attended for kindergarten, elementary, and middle school. From there, he went to Pace, where he and his family ensured that he was always present by using 5:30 a.m. wake-up calls

and carpooling. Rochebrun says that he and his family believed that perfect attendance was the first step in becoming successful. “The act of showing up at any level, no matter what you’re doing, is the most important thing,” said Rochebrun. At Pace, Rochebrun excelled academically in the classroom and athletically as part of the Pace wrestling team. He says his time as a Pace wrestler changed his entire outlook on life and he credits head wrestling coach Frank Pelegri with inspiring him. “He had this energy and self confidence that I wanted for myself,” said Rochebrun. After joining the Pace wrestling team, Rochebrun said he created a new world view for himself and that the discipline
he got from wrestling made him perform better in school and at home. “He’s one of the most dedicated and determined people I knew in high school,” said Matthew Sarria, a fellow Pace Class of 2017 alumnus. “To him, there was no obstacle that he couldn’t push through.” “My time at Pace prepared me for the real world emotionally, physically, mentally, and spiritually,” said Rochebrun. “I know that there's no challenge out there that's too great or big for me. As long as I stay faithful and put God before everything I do, I won't and can't be stopped. These are all things I wouldn't have learned anywhere else other than Pace.” Rochebrun will be attending Florida Atlantic University in the fall.

Miami Lakes K-8 Center teacher celebrates 26 perfect writing scores Miami Lakes K-8 Center eighth grade Language Arts teacher Virnalis Arvelo treated her top writers to dinner at Shula's 2, as she does every year to the students who achieve a perfect writing score on the Florida Standards Assessment. “I’m so proud of all my students and their hard work, I was speechless and overcome with emotion when I counted 26 perfect writing scores,” said Arvelo. “That's a record! I start-
ed this little tradition back in 2011 with six students and I’m so pleased that it has grown. I really love that it gives the students something to strive for when they walk into class the first day. Perfect or not, I want all my students to know that I love them all and have to pinch myself some days.” As a Miami Lakes Elementary alumni, Arvelo is living her dream of becoming a teacher and giving back to her
community. This coming year, she will be combining her passions for teaching and Zumba by bringing Zumba classes to Miami Lakes K-8 Center. “I’m so excited that we will be offering Zumba at my school, a way for students to incorporate healthy habits, become lovers of fitness and just have some fun during the school day,” said Arvelo.
