Community theatre group honored for successful years During its June 10 regular meeting, the Miami Lakes Town Council proclaimed June 10, 2014 as “Main Street Players Day.” “The Town Council is proud to recognize a cultural staple in our town, the Community Theater of Miami Lakes, also known as Main Street Players,” said Mayor Wayne Slaton. “Over the years the Main Street Players have captivated audiences of all ages with stellar theatrical production right here in the midst
of our town.” The Main Street Players is the longest running theater group in South Florida. The group was formed back in 1974 by then Hialeah Miami Lakes High School drama teacher Joe Boyd. The group moved to Main Street in 2004. The group was also recognized for awarding three scholarships last month to high school seniors involved in the performing arts.
Town’s Comprehensive Plan addresses needs for projected 2020 population of 33,185 By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff By 2020, Miami Lakes must find a way to accommodate 33,185 residents by adding housing, parks, commercial buildings, office spaces and transportation upgrades to meet the needs for the town’s growing population, which could increase to 36,295 people by 2025. Based on the population projections, Miami Lakes, which encompasses 6.5 square miles, would no longer be called a small town. According to the town’s new comprehensive master plan, which included an intensive review and subsequent comments by the state of Florida, Miami Lakes needs an additional 225.5 acres for future land-use for parks and recreation, low density and low medium density residential and office/residential. Residential development is estimated at 1,605 units and about 2.6 million total square feet for potential non-residential development. The town currently has 4,166 acres for existing land-use and future development. The Graham Companies and the Lowell Dunn family own the biggest properties including a large tract along Miami Lakes Drive and east and west of Northwest 87th Avenue called Dunnwoody Lakes and

Dunnwoody Forest. At the June 10 regular Town Council meeting, lawmakers approved the updated version of the comprehensive master plan, which needed some tweaking based on the inaccurate projections taken from the last two Census reports, according to the town’s Evaluation and Appraisal (EAR) supporting the plan amendments. Miami Lakes initially adopted the plan in 2003 and updated it in 2009, as part of the EAR report, which discovered the population projection was substantially lower than what the actual future population would be. The 2010 Census recorded the town’s population at 29,361, more than 15 percent higher than the original plan had estimated and almost 10 percent higher than the EAR’s estimate, but the assumptions appear to be fundamentally flawed. Conceivably, the problem stemmed from inaccurate low numbers to project the growing needs for residents and business owners, according to the report. Based on Miami-Dade County Property Appraiser’s data, a spate of construction for residential buildings occurred between 2000 and 2003, including 1,186 singlefamily homes, 288 apartment units and 285 condominium units,

Dr. Ruth Shobel volunteers with medical students in the Dominican
Comprehensive Plan looks at parks, residential units, traffic
By Roselind Romero The Miami Laker staff Local resident and medical practitioner, Ruth Shobel, participated in a medical mission that took place from late March to early April in the San Cristobal area of the Dominican Republic. Shobel, who has her practice at 7470 Fairway Drive, Suite 202 in Miami Lakes, has been practicing medicine for 30 years. Originally
for a total of 1,759 units. But some of the construction work was not acknowledged as part of the projection process. In the Census reports from 2000 to 2010 for people per household, the town’s average increased from 2.75 to 2.86, and the population trend is expected to increase at the same rate. The study assumed that the people per home rate in Miami Lakes will continue to rise through 2025, resulting in average people per home at 3.15. According to the 2010 Census, Miami Lakes had 10,698 housing units. According to town permit records, 175 residential units were erected between the same time period and at the end of 2013, bringing the total to 10,873. Therefore, to meet the 2025 housing demand, Miami Lakes must permit between 686 and 1,019 units, and the maximum development potential in the current comprehensive master plan would allow 1,605 additional units on available land, more than enough to the meet the projected demand. But if the units aren’t erected on properties designed for parks and recreation and environmentally protected parks, and in the business and office and residential areas, the town is left with potential development of 926 units, even with the Dunn family’s plans to build 509 residential units and a shopping plaza on Dunnwoody Lakes at the density which was approved in the site plan. According to the town’s comprehensive master plan, Miami Lakes currently has 44 acres of parks considered urban open

practice in 2000. Shobel is board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics and a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. This was the twelfth year that Medical Students in Action (MSA) led the medical mission to the Dominican Republic which includes students from the University of Miami School of Medicine along with doctors from several specialties like internal medicine, OB/GYN, pediatrics, dermatology, cardiology, orthopedics, and dentistry, all of whom volunteer to serve in four underserved villages. The visiting medical students and doctors, including Shobel, treated hundreds of patients each day of the trip, providing care and medications to manage chronic illnesses, treat acute problems, conduct health screenings, and train local residents to be community leaders. “This was my second mission trip but not my last,” said Shobel. “We had to be creative in delivering care to these patients, since we set up our clinics in a school and a tiny church, using pews as examining tables.” The doctors brought their own equipment, generators, and medical machines to provide the most efficient care possible. “The villagers were very appreciative of everything that we were able to do in our limited time there,” said Shobel. “Some of them had to wait for several hours to be seen, but we never heard any complaints. They were very friendly people.” For more information on MSA, visit www.medicalstudentsinaction.com.

space and 80 acres for community and neighborhood pocket parks. Based on the town’s estimated 2013 population of 29,966, the actual Level of Service, or LOS, is 1.46 acres of urban open space per 1,000 population, and 2.67 acres of community and neighborhood parks per 1,000 population. Miami Lakes is currently not meeting the adopted LOS because the town’s population increased significantly more than anticipated in the original master plan, according to the EAR report. The town, however, is planning to build a 2-acre dog park near the Palmetto Expressway frontage road and N.W. 82 Avenue, which would be a neighborhood park. Based on the population projections, to meet the adopted LOS in 2020, Miami Lakes would need an additional 58.07 acres of urban open space and 107.85 acres of community or neighborhood parks. The numbers in 2025 would be 61 acres and 113 acres of urban open space and community parks, respectively, meaning the town would need to acquire and build a total of 50 acres of parks by 2025. The town’s N.W. 87th Avenue Development Agreement with the Lowell Dunn family could be the best solution for additional green space. According to the accord, which is tied into the Dunnwoody Lakes rezoning project for the 509 housing units and shopping plaza, the developer is required to dedicate up to 6.11 acres of the historic Madden’s Hammock, as well as a restrictive covenant which requires allocating 2.70 acres of small parks for the residential building project to meet the concurrency requirement. Donating the space would help bring Miami Lakes’ existing park acreage to 47 for urban open space and 88 for community parks. Another possible solution is the Par 3 golf course area, which is owned by The Graham Companies. The town created the Par 3 Advisory Committee to determine the best option to use the 28-acre property, most likely a passive park. For transportation upgrades, the 2010 Miami-Dade County EAR identified two roadways east and west of the Palmetto Expressway that are not meeting the adopted LOS “D” standard. The roads are Miami Lakes Drive from the Palmetto Expressway west to N.W. 84 Avenue, which is operating at LOS “F,” and N.W. 170 Street from N.W. 77 Avenue west to N.W. 87 Avenue, which is operating at LOS “E.” But the opening of N.W. 87 Avenue from 154 to 162 streets could improve the level of service on the deficient roadways.

As one goes through the phenomenal Media Center at the school, and enters an area set off from the rest of the center, one can trace the life of Bob Graham from his childhood, through his education, political life, to the present day. The exhibit is divided into five different sections with quotations by the Senator that are coordinated with the five principals of the National Honor Society: Leadership, Citizenship, Character, Service, and Scholarship. cover unforeseen/hidden conditions that may be encountered during the performance of the work. The site contains significant muck conditions as well as an FPL line that may be encountered during construction. • The Council authorized the town manager to enter into a long term lease agreement for a private park parcel, 16550 N.W. 86 Court, with the Royal Oaks Homeowner’s Association, to be utilized and maintained as a public minipark. In March, members of the Royal Oaks Homeowners Association approached the Town to discuss the possibility of transferring the maintenance and operation of the park parcel. Presently, the park has a playground that does not meet current safety and accessibility standards for use. The HOA expressed to the Town its interest to transfer the property due to the playground’s replacement and upkeep of the park not being sustainable for them in the long term. While the park has been maintained by the HOA over the years, it is in the Royal Oaks neighborhood which is accessible to the public. In neighborhoods that are accessible to the public in Miami Lakes, public park land has been dedicated by the developer and maintained by the Town. The Royal Oaks neighborhood is an exception as no public park land was dedicated as part of the development. Transfer of this parcel would address the exception and allow funding for park maintenance in the same manner as the Town’s other public mini-parks. In addition, obtaining the parcel allows the Town to continue to grow its park inventory as it makes strides to meet its Level of Service goals outlined in the Town’s Comprehensive Plan for future population growth and maintain the park at a high standard for the future. The Town proposed a long-term (99 year) lease agreement for use of the parcel as a public mini-park.
In April 2014, the Association Board voted to proceed with leasing the parcel to the Town. The Town plans to remove the playground area and maintain it as open green space until funding is acquired to build a new playground. The initial cost for demolition, site restoration, installation of sod, benches, waste receptacles, and irrigation upgrades are estimated to be $25,000. The projected yearly maintenance cost is $3,000 per year. • Lawmakers approved an ordinance on first reading to change the town’s land development code regarding the height of a fence and walls that are adjacent to a street right-of-way from six feet to nine feet. Councilmember Ceasar Mestre, who sponsored the ordinance, said many residents brought to his attention their desire for the maximum height of walls to be increased in efforts to enhance public safety. • Lawmakers gave their final approval to an ordinance which now requires the town to notify homeowners and condominium associations of proposed building and zoning projects within one mile of their boundaries. Councilmember Nelson Rodriguez recommended the measure. • Councilmembers passed an ordinance on second reading to adopt amendments to update the Town of Miami Lakes Comprehensive Plan. • The Miami Lakes Town Council authorized Town Manager Alex Rey to issue a supplemental work order for additional construction administration services for both phases of the West Lakes A Drainage Basin Improvements to the town’s engineer, Kimley Horn & Associates. The supplemental work order is not to exceed $51,230.00, which is comprised of an additional $13,115.00 for West Lakes A Basin Drainage Improvements, Phase I and $38,115.00 for West Lakes A Basin Drainage Improvements, Phase II.
• Lawmakers approved Councilmember Tony Lama’s recommendation to work with the Miami-Dade Expressway Authority (MDX), as the agency is making plans to alleviate traffic in the Northwest Miami-Dade area. Lama said he talked to residents about the traffic congestion and they suggested adding a ramp at N.W. 67 Avenue to connect to State Road 924 (the Gratigny) as an option. The lawmaker said Javier Vazquez, a new MDX board member, indicated a similar plan is included in the agency’s five-year plan to help relieve traffic gridlock, as well as adding access from S.R. 924 to the Turnpike. Rush hour traffic on Miami Lakes Drive going east and west to the Palmetto and on N.W. 67 Avenue going north towards the Palmetto continues to be an issue of great concern to residents, who are scrambling for a solution. Lama said the town would work with MDX and evaluate its plan for exit points out of town via N.W. 67 Avenue. • Lawmakers approved Councilmember Frank Mingo’s recommendation for Miami Lakes to spend $2,000 for the Operation SAFEE Flight (OSF) program for Miami Lakes kids who want to take part in the 2014 SAFEE Aviation Summer Academy Program. As part of the program, Miami Lakes can partner up with other cities for the Summer. The Operation SAFEE Flight (OSF) is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to helping children stay in school, improve their academic performance and explore STEM education and career possibilities in the aviation industry. OSF is expanding its outreach for the summer 2014.

Schwinghammer retires as Troop 566 Scout Master In May, Boy Scout Trop 566, chartered to Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church, made a major change in its leadership. Scout Master Sean Schwinghammer left the troop after seven years, two as Scout Master. His motivation is simple, after his oldest son Broderick, 17, had attained the rank of Eagle Scout and is leaving for the University of Florida, while his youngest son, Aidan, 6, will begin first grade in the fall and will join Cub Scout Pack 660 chartered to Miami Lakes United Methodist Church. “In a very real sense, I will begin again with Scouting, but there is no duplicating the wonderful time with Troop 566. I love all the boys and their families,” Schwinghammer said. “They have all immeasurably contributed to my family’s life.” Schwinghammer was known for bringing new adventures to Troop 566 where he conceptualized and ran the first surfing camping trips (now a mainstay of the troop), backwater overnight kayaking adventures, zip-lining and horseback riding trips, and even water skiing. He and his Scouts have been
aggressive hikers, hiking the Appalachian Trail and the legendary Barefoot Mailman hike. Through his efforts, Troop 566 was on the cover of Boy’s Life Magazine, the most circulated youth magazine in the nation. Adriana Schwinghammer has been the troop’s Catholic Religious Education Counselor, teaching and leading boys to better understand their faith including working at homeless shelters and doing community service. “For me, I really am proud of the visibility we have offered Scouting through town service,” Schwinghammer said. Troop 566 has been the “go-to” troop for town flag ceremonies, has worked with the Veterans Committee to create and provide bi-annual Flag Retirement Ceremonies (legal and respectful burning of American flags), and has won Best Float in a few Veteran’s Day Parades. “Scouting has been a privilege and will always be a part of my life,” he said. His greatest joy has come from his Eagle Scouts. “Over the past few years, I have mentored six great boys to become Eagle Scouts, the highest award in Scouting. This has been wonderful
for them and for me. “I have seen that the more you challenge a boy, the better and quicker he becomes a man, and through challenge, imbued in principals, you can do great things.” Schwinghammer is being succeeded by new Scout Master Carlos Perez, a longtime leader with Troop 566, a beloved music and history teacher at Bob Graham Education Center, and father of Star Scout Kolbe Perez. “Mr. Perez becomes the seventh Scout Master for Troop 566. The Troop will grow and prosper because of his efforts and the fact that this 100-year-old Scouting program works, making boys into responsible men and effective leaders,” Schwinghammer said. Boys ages 11 to 18 are welcome to join Boy Scouting and can visit Troop 566 any Tuesday between 7:30 and 9 p.m. at Our Lady of the Lakes. First- through fifth-grade boys can join Cub Scouting at Pack 566 or at Pack 660 at Miami Lakes United Methodist Church every Thursday at 7 p.m.

Lake Hilda tree and landscape maintenance project underway The Town of Miami Lakes started a tree and landscape maintenance project on June 11 at the green space area located west of N.W. 67 Avenue and north of the Gratigny Expressway on Lake Hilda. As part of the project, all invasive tree species will be removed, trees will be trimmed, and the area will be clear of all debris and overgrown landscape material. The project’s goal is to provide aesthetic and beautification improvements to the area. It is scheduled to take two weeks to be completed.
More than 100 senior citizens dressed in Hawaiian-inspired floral shirts and dresses attended the Miami Lakes’ annual Senior Luau on June 5 at Roberto Alonso Community Center. Attendees were treated to delicious food from Trattoria Pampered Chef and enjoyed the music, while playing games and winning raffle prizes. The free event was hosted by the Town of Miami Lakes and its Elderly
Affairs Committee. “After contributing so much to our community throughout the years, events like the Senior Luau are the least that we can do for our seniors,” said Vice Mayor Manny Cid. “Miami Lakes is a great town for those seeking an active retirement. Community recital features 150 talented students from town’s various free classes Several hundred parents and families packed the auditorium to enjoy an evening of entertaining performances from talented students of the Town’s popular community projects during the Miami Lakes annual Community Recital on May 30 at Barbara Goleman Senior High School. The recital featured performances by the ballet, jazz, martial arts, senior Tai Chi, adult Yoga, and adult line dancing classes. The crowd showed their appreciation with loud applause and standing ovations. More than 150 students participated and displayed the skills that they learned over the course of the
year participating in town sponsored programs, which are provided in conjunction with Hialeah Miami Lakes Adult and Community Education, and Miami Dade College School of Community Education. “It was such a pleasure to see all of the great talent showcase at the recital,” said Mayor Wayne Slaton. “Special thanks to all the teachers, students and Town staff that worked on this great event.” For more information on community programs, contact Leisure Services manager Katya Lysak at lysakk@miamilake-fl.gov, or at 305-698-9308.
Town receives $1.3 million in state funds for two improvement projects The Town of Miami Lakes announced that $1.3 million in state funds has been awarded for two key water projects – a Canal Bank Stabilization Project on the northern boundary of the town, and Phase II of the West Lakes Drainage Improvements. These budget victories are a direct result of the Mayor and Town Council working together with State Legislators to achieve these accomplishments for Miami Lakes residents. “Knowing how crucial these two projects are to our town residents, we worked hard with our State Legislators to obtain the funds for these improvements,” said Mayor Wayne Slaton. “I want to thank the Town Council, State Rep. Manny Diaz Jr., Senator Rene Garcia, State Rep. Jose Oliva, and Miami-Dade
Delegation chair Eddy Gonzalez for their efforts in securing these much-need state funds for the town. Miami Lakes is fortunate to have such dedicated public servants,” he said. The Canal Bank Stabilization Project received $1 million and will address current deficiencies along 10,000 linear feet of canal banks, through surveying and engineering improvement designs for canal bank stabilization and landscaping. Damages to the canal banks have been caused by severe erosion and require immediate correction. The second project earmarked $300,000 for Phase II of the West Lakes Drainage Improvements where the funds will be used to complete the drainage system retrofit and the installation of new exfiltration trenches. The West
Lake community continues to be adversely impacted by flooding events, with rainwater reaching residential garages and covering streets and sidewalks. Heavy rainfall resulted in property damage for many of the 236 homes located in the project area, and three properties have already been designated as Severe Repetitive Loss properties. Diaz praised the teamwork of his colleagues. “I want to thank Rep. Oliva, Sen. Garcia and Delegation chair Gonzalez. As a team we were able to make sure our community’s needs were met in the state budget,” he said. “These improvement projects are both important successes for Miami Lakes, and we will continue to bring the necessary state funding that improves our quality of life,” said Rep. Oliva.

Giardino Gourmet Salads set to open at Park Centre By Roselind Romero The Miami Laker staff The Giardino Gourmet Salads franchise now has a Miami Lakes location under its belt, the 10th location just in time for the franchise's 10th anniversary. This addition marks the company's first multi-unit operators. A tentative date between late June and early July is scheduled for a grand opening celebration and ribbon-cutting ceremony with town officials. Giardino Miami Lakes is readying its new store at 8008 N.W. 154 Street in the Park Centre Shops, and is owned by multi-unit operators Jaime Mitrani, Robert Fuerth and Lilly Tudela. Mitrani and Fuerth first took ownership of the South Miami location which has since become one of the highest-grossing restaurants in the chain. Tudela joined Mitrani and Fuerth in 2013 for the opening of the Miami Lakes location. “The Giardino brand resonated with Rob and I from the start which is why we've worked so hard to improve operations and

establish a positive reputation for our location,” said Mitrani. Mitrani, Freuth and Tudela are all Miami natives, and Tudela has recently become a resident of Miami Lakes. “We know we've chosen the best possible location for our next store with coming to Miami Lakes,” said Freuth. “The Miami Lakers we've already had a chance to interact with have all been very welcoming and have told us they can’t wait until we open.” All three owners hail from the corporate world but have entrepreneurial roots. They are fans of successful homegrown franchises and after finding Giardino, the transition was seamless. “We love the food and the healthy concept of the brand and whole-heartedly believe in what we serve,” said Tudela. Giardino’s Miami Lakes menu options will include gourmet salads, wraps, grain bowls, sliders, soups, fresh teas, juices, healthy desserts and snacks and will be open for lunch and dinner Sunday through Saturday. The meals offered are a blend of well-balanced flavors and healthy ingredients. Customers can dine-in or take-out, and Giardino has delivery and catering options. In addition to the new location, Giardino also has restaurants in the neighborhoods of Blue Lagoon, Brickell, Coral Gables, Doral, Downtown Miami, Kendall, Miramar, and South Miami. Council approves parking fee plan to allow new business in Town Center By Miami Laker staff At the June 10 Miami Lakes Town Council regular meeting, lawmakers approved a resolution to establish a per space fee for the “Payment-in-lieu of Parking Program” at $1,047.17, plus yearly reimbursements to the town for the cost of litter control for each improved on-street parking space. In February, the Town Council passed an ordinance to set up the parking program within the Town Center area to create more available parking and protection to sep-
arate cars from the main thoroughfare and to beautify the area. The program allows land uses within the Town Center area to meet all or a portion of their parking requirement by making a payment for the use of public, onstreet parking spaces, with proceeds from this program used to make parking and mobility improvements in the Town Center area. The per space fee at $1,047.17 is based on the estimated cost to the town of improving each on-

Since it is vital to your mobility, any issue with your big toe can make jogging, walking, or simply standing a painful chore. One of the most common problems of the big toe is a bunion. Bunions are often quite painful, limiting your activity. If nonsurgical treatment has not relieved your pain, or if you have a severe bunion, you may want to consider limiting your activity. If nonsurgical treatment has not relieved your pain, you may want to consider surgery. Bunion surgery can both reduce pain and improve the appearance of your feet.
Dr. Victor Herrera and Dr. Martha Herrera invite you to 3625 NW 82 Ave. Suite 320 learn more about treating your bunions. Call us at Doral, FL 33166 (786) 360-3715 in Hialeah, or at (305) 593-1555 in (305) 593-1555 Doral for more questions or to schedule a consultation. www.FLERAHG.com And save those feet!
In any surgical procedure, the potential for complications exists. The potential risks and complications with products used in foot surgery include infection, pain, inflammation and swelling at implant site, allergic reaction to implant material(s), loosening or dislocation of implant resulting in revision surgery, deterioration or loss of bone, over-production of bone, blood vessel blockage, and negative bodily response due to implant rejection and/or implant wear debris.
street parking space, including pavement markings, and providing and maintaining landscape islands/bump-outs covering approximately ten percent of the onstreet parking area within Town Center. The resolution also provides the option for an applicant/property owner to provide all or a portion of these physical improvements and maintenance activities themselves, in which case the in-lieu fee would be prorated, and could be eliminated entirely if the applicant/property owner chooses to undertake all physical improvements and maintenance activities themselves. In cases where right-of-way improvements will be completed by someone other than the Town, the design and location would be subject to discretionary approval by the Town, and also subject to said party obtaining any required right-of-way construction permits. Stu Wyllie, president of The Graham Companies, the primary property owner within the Town Center area, said, “Councilmembers have been very diligent in seeking more restaurant and entertainment options in the area. However, existing Town Development Code parking requirements have limited leasing to some new businesses. “The ability to add the approximately 430 ‘on-street’ parking spaces to our existing parking inventory will greatly enhance our leasing efforts. The business community appreciates the town’s efforts to assist in improving and adding to the tenants in Town Center for all Miami Lakes residents to enjoy,” he said.

Important news for people suffering with food allergies From Asthma and Allergy Associates of Florida Special to The Miami Laker Having recently completed “Food Allergy Awareness Week,” this would be a great time to introduce ourselves and our services while sharing some important information regarding food allergy awareness. My name is Yoram Padeh, M.D., and I am one of the Allergists at Asthma and Allergy Associates of Florida. Food allergies, as many have come to realize, whether through friends, family members, or the media, are on the rise. While this is true with all allergies in general, the food allergies in particular are concerning because they can be a matter of life-and-death quite literally. While not addressing theories behind the increase of allergies in the general population, I want to make some important points regarding food allergies. First and foremost, if a person has a lifethreatening food allergy, they should always have at their disposal an Epinephrine autoinjector. Some of the brands are Epipen(TM) and Auvi-Q(TM). Also, if an allergic reaction develops that requires the use of an Epinephrine autoinjector, someone should be called 911 for further medical assistance. These devices provide only temporary relief of life-threatening symptoms, usually for about 20 minutes. After 20 minutes, the symptoms can return at full-force. Therefore, it is extremely important to activate emergency services once such a device is used. These devices should be used in two main scenarios. The first

involves any symptoms which threaten the airway, breathing or circulation. If there is a concern that the person may stop breathing or it passing out, then an Epinephrine autoinjector should be used immediately. Secondly, if a person feels that the symptoms are progressing and getting worse second by second, minute by minute, it is not necessary to wait until the airway or circulation is affected. Delay in using an Epinephrine autoinjector can diminish the chances that it can reverse the symptoms. The websites for these devices can provide further information and video instructions on their proper use. Additionally, within the last two years, a bill was signed into law by the State of Florida as well as by the U.S. Federal government allowing schools to carry “unassigned” Epinephrine autoinjectors for any students that may unexpectedly develop a severe allergic reaction. Students who have known severe food allergies should provide the school with such a device for their personal use. If you are not sure if your child’s school carries such “unassigned” devices, ask the school nurse or the administration about it. Former resident Michael Tiddes now a successful movie director By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff As a kid, Michael Tiddes used his father’s video camera to make homemade movies casting his GI Joe figurines in explosive scenes complete with special sound effects, the first sign of a future career in filmmaking. Further fueling his ambition was his grandmother frequently taking him to see films in the movie theater, where the giant screen was his window of opportunity for a shot at Hollywood. And his childhood dream is now well-founded. Tiddes, 38, is one Hollywood’s emerging new filmmakers, exposing him to the sights and sounds and the glamour of the world’s most famous entertainment industry filled with movie and TV stars, historic studios and a ritzy ambiance. The former Miami Lakes resident’s big break came when he was chosen to direct the 2013 scary movie Haunted House, starring Marlon Wayans, Cedric the Entertainer and Essence Atkins, which took in $18.1 million during its first week, beating out Sean Penn’s blockbuster movie Gangster Squad. Haunted House took in $60 million world wide, marking a successful debut for the new filmmaker. “I had so much fun with the movie,” Tiddes said from Hollywood. “It was so amazing because I grew up watching Marlon Wayans and his family and Cedric the Entertainer and they were willing to do anything to make the movie a success.” He said the filming of the movie took three months with a $1.5 million budget. As a result, Tiddes said he is on board to direct and write future projects with the Wayans family and Cedric the Entertainer, conceivably a sequel to Haunted House. “I love working with them,” Tiddes said. “I directed Haunted House, but I have done a good amount of things to get to that point,” he said. “Had the opportunity, worked hard at it, stayed in focus and all the important pieces fell into place.” Tiddes was born in New Jersey and moved to Miami Lakes when he was 6 years-old. He initially enrolled at Norland High for the school’s magnet program for music and drama before he transferred to the Design and Architectural School and Hialeah Miami Lakes Senior High School. He graduated from St. Thomas Aquinas. Though a born filmmaker, he was rejected by the filmmaking program at the University of Central Florida but persevered and continued his studies in fine arts at the university and picked up an extra job so he could enroll in the
reputable Valencia College film program. Tiddes received a Bachelor of Arts degree in painting from University of Central Florida and an Associate Science degree in Film Production from Valencia College in Orlando. “It’s been a journey,” Tiddes said. “Moving to Los Angeles was a struggle, working jobs until I could break into the business.” Tiddes depicted Hollywood as an “interesting place with eccentric people who are fighting and chasing their dreams of becoming movie stars, directors and producers.” Tiddes said he hopes to direct and write remakes of his favorite childhood movies, including Star Wars, Scarface, Revenge of the Nerds and Ghostbusters. “I fell in love with those movies as a kid,” he said. “It would be a
MICHAEL TIDDES dream to direct any remakes of those movies.” Tiddes is married to Kelly Tiddes and has a young daughter named Logan.

Mater Gardens Academy Chorus performs at Downtown Disney
Lindsay Selmer honored with Coach of the Year award for winning District softball title Lindsay Selmer, daughter of Ellen Selmer, vice president of Human Resources for The Graham Companies in Miami Lakes, was honored in May with the “Bob Demaree Coach of the Year” award. Selmer, who graduated from the University of Central Florida in 2013 with a major in Exceptional Education, teaches at
East River High School in Orlando, and just completed her second year as the varsity softball coach. She took the East River High team to District finals both years and won her first District championship this year. The award is nominated by the high school varsity coaches in the metro area east of Orlando.
THE MATER GARDENS ACADEMY CHORUS became stars of their own Disney show on Tuesday, May 20, when they entertained guests at Waterside Stage in Downtown Disney at the Walt Disney World Resort. The performers, under the direction of Diana Mayorga, put on a musically delightful show for the guests visiting the unique entertainment area. Their performance included many well-known songs such as Pharell's “Happy” and “Seasons of Love” from the Broadway musical “Rent.” This was the premier performance for the chorus with Disney Performing Arts.

Mater Academy schools record two Silver Knights By Roselind Romero The Miami Laker staff Mater Academy Charter Middle and High School, located in Hialeah, is the home school of two local Silver Knight Winners – Ashley Gomez and Luis Miguel Rodriguez. The recipients of the
prestigious award were recognized during a ceremony at the James L. Knight International Center by The Miami Herald. Gomez won her scholarship in the Business category and Rodriguez won for Mathematics. Both were honored as part of the
15 winners and chosen over nominees county-wide. Nominees from all schools were interviewed by a panel of judges and the winning Silver Knights received $2,000, a statue, and a medallion presented by American Airlines. Gomez's Silver Knight project was born from the economic hardship she and her classmates faced. After teaming up with her school's Future Business Leaders of America chapter and with Regions Bank, Gomez spearheaded money management seminars for her
peers. She ranks among the top two percent of her class and won a Congressional Award, a Student of the Year Award, and a Brown Book Award. Rodriguez began the project Bright Lights to help middle school students learn to read in English. Rodriguez understands the hardship behind adapting to a new language and culture, having only immigrated to the states in sixth grade. Rodriguez and his peers visit classrooms to re-enact scenes from books that students
may have trouble understanding. A noted AP Scholar with Distinction, Rodriguez has been on the Principal's Honor Roll for five years. The honorable mentions in the Silver Knight program featured 45 students in various categories. Local students Veronica Heredia from Hialeah Gardens Senior High for the Social Science category, and Sukie Hernandez from Mater Academy were among those honored.

Country Club Middle School offers culinary arts, biomedical academies By Roselind Romero The Miami Laker staff Country Club Middle School welcomes all incoming students for the 2014-2015 school year, the second year of the school's unique academy programs with the culinary arts and biomedical programs. The Culinary Arts Academy was launched as an answer to extend the food and nutrition programs within the curriculum that incorporate healthy concepts on exercise, nutritious foods, and adequate rest. Lead teacher for the program and teacher of the Culinary Arts course, Monique Brunson, has been a part of the school staff for four years, and has taught for 26 years. “Our students leave the program with life skills that they will
Goleman graduate Jordan Thompson is first on school’s Wall of Presidents By Roselind Romero The Miami Laker staff Barbara Goleman graduate, Jordan Thompson, celebrated his birthday in the last weeks of his senior year to a great surprise from the school. Appropriately named “The Wall of Presidents,” a wall in the school's main office will now feature the student government and student class presidents for their consistent efforts and achievements. Thompson will be attending Florida International University this fall to pursue a degree in biology. Throughout his high school career, Thompson has led an antibullying seminar, held the title of vice president for the National Honor Society and was the Miami-Dade Youth Summit Liaison while juggling a rigorous course-load of advanced placement and dual enrollment classes. He also took part in the school's bowling and badminton teams. Thompson's mother, Felicia Lewis, though immensely proud of her son, says his concluding year at Goleman is bittersweet. “I want him to stay on the path he is on now. But I’m torn. He is an only child, and growing up so fast,” said Lewis with a smile.

utilize in their future. Our course enables them to build the foundation that they need, in the event they decide to take these career paths,” said Brunson. “The academy program is extremely beneficial in my classroom.” Even those not enrolled in the course benefit from the treats made by the Culinary Academy students. They have prepared and served the faculty at the annual holiday breakfast and numerous school functions. Students apply their core curriculum skills like mathematics in measurements and science with chemical changes, which unites the core class learning with other necessary life skills. Much like Brunson, Jerome Byrd, lead teacher for the Biomedical Academy, has also seen the benefits of the academy programs at Country Club Middle. The Biomedical Academy’s students have an advantage over those who were not exposed to the material before entering high
JV
school, they are also learning from a retired Miami-Dade Fire Department Captain. Byrd, who has served as paramedic, Fire College Instructor, EMS Captain and has been teaching since 2007, has a variety of hands-on experience in the Biomedical field. “Some of the skills gained in this course will be tremendously helpful in that it would make the kids feel very comfortable in some emergency situations,” said Byrd. “Our goal is to see each child certified in CPR. This course will give them the basic foundation to advance to the next level in the medical field.” The students in the Biomedical Academy are able to take vital signs, understand basic anatomy, and have broadened their interests by participating in this program. For more information on the academy programs at Country Club Middle, contact the school at 305-820-8800.

Pace alumni Bryan Garcia ordained a transitional deacon Monsignor Edward Pace High School alumnus Bryan Garcia, class of 2006, has been ordained a transitional deacon as he continues to prepare to enter the priesthood in the spring of 2015. In late April, family and friends gathered for the ordination of Garcia and 12 other seminarians by Gregory Parks, Bishop of Pensacola and Tallahassee, at Saint Joan of Arc Catholic Church in Boca Raton. The following day, Garcia gave
his first homily at his home parish and elementary school, Immaculate Conception Church in Hialeah. Garcia's parents, Ana Garcia and Eddie Garcia, are both incredibly proud of Bryan's dedication and commitment to his faith. Both parents are principals of Catholic schools, and they have made it a point to serve as role models for all of their children throughout their lives as people of faith.

Country music sensation helps Pace High’s charitable event Monsignor Edward Pace High School hosted its annual Battle of the Bands and DJs in early April. This Pace community event gives students an opportunity to showcase their talents as musicians, singers, and DJ’s. Faculty collaborate with students for the event, not only in preparing students for their performances, but by adding their own performances on stage as well. In an effort to support Pace's sister schools in Haiti, all proceeds go toward the well-being of those involved in the education of impoverished children by supporting the salary for all teachers as well as food for the students. Pace's most recent efforts in donations helped to build a struc-
tured building where students can meet for class, instead of having to meet for school under a tent. This year, the students and faculty were in for a special treat– a guest appearance by Miami-native country sensation, IMAJ. IMAJ frequents Miami while on tour, and she always gives her time to charitable events. When she heard that fans of hers were not only Miami students and faculty, but also heavily involved with charities for Haiti, she couldn't resist doing her part in helping. Pace High School's Battle of the Bands and DJs participants raised over $3,100. Continued efforts and early planning to aid Pace's sister schools is already in effect for next year's major event.
