Slaton returns as mayor with win over Hernandez; Mingo wins Seat 4 By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff Wayne Slaton got his old job back as the new mayor for Miami Lakes, while Frank Mingo grabbed Council Seat 4 in Tuesday’s special election to fill two vacant seats created by a political scandal that landed the former mayor in jail. Slaton, 61, will serve out the rest of Michael Pizzi’s four-year term following his arrest in August on public corruption charges, and Mingo will serve on the Town Council to fill the unexpired term of former Councilmember Nelson Hernandez, who resigned to run for mayor. In the five-man mayoral race, Slaton defeated Hernandez, Dr. David Bennett and political neophytes Luis Espinosa and Edwin Romero in a special election called 90 days after Pizzi’s suspension from office. Slaton mustered 1,626 votes to Hernandez’s 1,127 votes, while Espinosa collected 383, Bennett had 250 and only eight residents

Council approves final budget keeping low tax rate By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff Miami Lakes lawmakers gave their final approval for keeping the same rate for property taxes for 2013-2014 and adopted a $15.3 million budget to upgrade public works projects and beautification, and focus more on education after councilmembers learned two perennial A schools could be in jeopardy of losing their mark and state funding. At last week’s final budget hearing, councilmembers unanimously approved the 2.3518 tax rate and voted collectively for the spending plan, which is projected to generate about $5.7 million in revenue from ad valorem taxes. Some lawmakers had indicated they preferred the state’s roll back
rate of 2.245 but the new one gives the town more flexibility while balancing the budget with $200,000 in carryover money. Town Manager Alex Rey said the tax rate is about 4.72 percent above the roll back rate and is needed to provide for a $325,000 increase in the police budget, which is costing the town $6.8 million for next year. At the first budget hearing, councilmembers approved some of the town’s committee’s requests for additional funding, including the Education Advisory Board, which initially asked for $500. But citing the dire need for extra tutoring for the FCAT, the group said $3,000 wasn’t enough, and Miami Lakes K-8 Center and Bob Graham Education Center
(BGEC) could drop to an B and lose state funding. State officials dole out a lot of money to A schools, said Star Rodriguez, former vice chairwoman of the Miami Lakes Education Advisory Board (EAB), who stepped down to run for a Town Council seat. Miami Lakes K-8 Center has been an A school for 14 consecutive years and BGEC was on the A list for a decade. Rodriguez told lawmakers the complicated test continues to pose more challenges for students each year. As a result, the schools dropped several points down during the 2011-2012 school year but earned just enough points to maintain their A grade. “We are hoping you can find extra money for FCAT tutoring because it’s very important,” said Rodriguez. At the behest of Councilmember Tim Daubert, lawmakers voted to give the EAB $4,000 solely for FCAT tutoring. The town will use some of the $6,600 in health and medical savings for the program. “I don’t want any of our schools dropping down to an B,” said
Mayor Ceasar Mestre. The $2,600 left over was earmarked for the Economic Development Committee (EDC) to initiate a program to help Miami Lakes veterans and other residents find jobs in the town. Daubert, who served in the U.S. military, made the suggestion. Councilmember Nelson Rodriguez, a Coral Gables firefighter and paramedic, was reluctant to use any health and medical savings to fund other services. “You all know how I feel about health, but education and jobs at this point are important,” he said. Rey said despite the new changes to the budget, Miami Lakes is still in “good” financial shape with a beginning fund balance of almost $4 million and the $200,000 in carryover money. “The $200,000, which is less than one percent of the town’s budget, and given that Miami Lakes still needs to close the fiscal year, I do not recommend re-programming the carry-over funds at this point,” Rey said. For attorney fees, Councilmember Tony Lama raised a concern over the flat rate charged by a
law firm for litigation services and asked Rey to renegotiate a new contract to attenuate the cost. The litigation lawyers are billing the town about $7,000 a month for 400 hours a year, but Lama said the firm is being paid while not rendering litigation services. “I think we need the law firm to work on a when-needed basis,” Lama said. For other revenues, Miami Lakes is projected to generate about $4 million in intergovernmental revenue, $2.5 million in utility taxes, $1.5 million in franchise fees and $1 million in licenses and permits. For expenses, Miami Lakes is planning to spend $2.3 million on parks and recreation, $1.9 million for town administration and finance, and $1.4 million for public works. Councilmembers approved town wide beautification initiatives for $300,000 for entry features and intersection beautification program, and $2 million for over two years for road resurfacing and drainage improvements in the Lake Martha and Lake Sarah neighborhoods.
Slaton, Mingo win in Special Election (Continued from Page 1) he lost to in last year’s election. The 41-year Miami Lakes resident ran on a platform of restoring the town’s five-year Strategic Plan, which he called the residents’ plan, with operating principles, core values and goals that are implemented with unyielding respect for all. “The plan that is the very foundation of our town should protect our children, residents and busi-
nesses,” he said. “Provide good and timely maintenance at a reasonable and efficient price. Provide the service that our residents want and deserve, new capital improvements that the citizens want, when we have the money to pay for them.” Slaton won despite trailing Hernandez, 27, in campaign fundraising and support from State Senator Rene Garcia, as he collected $2,000 to Hernandez’s

$24,262 as of September 24. Mingo, who raised about $22,565, was thrust into the political spotlight after Miami Lakes flirted with the idea of annexing Palm Springs North. He’s pushing for residents input through a referendum to determine if they want to increase the size of Miami Lakes. According to the town’s charter, the decision lies in the hands of councilmembers. A resident since 1986, Mingo wants to keep property taxes low as well. “I am pushing to restore transparency and ethics in our local government to move Miami Lakes forward and back on track are my priorities,” said Mingo. Rodriguez, 48, said she was disappointed over the results but was encouraged by a lot of supporters in the community and the fact that the candidates ran a clean campaign. She said she’s considering running again next year. “I’m leaning toward it but I want to talk to my family to make sure it’s the right thing for me,” said the real estate agent. Cobiella raised $15,415 for his campaign and drew support from former Miami-Dade Mayor Alex Penelas, while Rodriguez raised $4,275. Hernandez, Cobiella, Bennett and Romero couldn’t be reached for comments by press time. Slaton and Mingo will be sworn into office during the October 8 regular Town Council meeting at Miami Lakes Town Hall.

In Memoriam:
Roberto Alonso, Miami Lakes’ first Vice Mayor
ROBERTO ALONSO 1949-2013
By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff Roberto Alonso, an original Miami Lakes councilmember and first vice mayor who championed the development of Royal Oaks Park and the Community Center, and discovered the much-needed land owned by FDOT to build a permanent fire station on the west side of town has died. He was 64. Alonso died last week after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. Before his death, Alonso was sales and marketing director for 90 Miles, a cigar and distribution company. “Mr. Alonso was an incredible family man and truly exemplified what a perfect father, husband and gentleman should be,” said Miami Lakes Mayor Ceasar Mestre. “He served as both ‘the rock’ to his family and to this community, always striving to go above and beyond.”

Mestre ordered the Town of Miami Lakes flag at the Government Center to be lowered to half-mast for three days in Alonso’s memory. Born in Cuba, Alonso was a Pedro Pan kid, who boarded a plane to Miami without his parents and was sent to live with his aunt when he was 12 years old. Alonso was among 14,000 children who were sent to Miami, Florida, and 35 other states, as part of Operation Pedro Pan from 1960 to 1962. Pedro Pan was coordinated by the U.S. government, the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Miami and the Cuban exile community in the U.S. Their parents made the greatest sacrifice to send them to live without them to eschew abduction, indoctrination and execution because they opposed the revolutionary government. Alonso’s aunt, who arrived in Miami a month earlier, put in a claim for him and picked him up as soon as he landed in Miami. Some kids were sent to a camp and refuge in Kendall, Alonso said. “It was a new life for me,” he told The Miami Laker in 2011 “At the beginning, it was hard, and my parents came to Miami six months later. That is why I appreciate everything in life.” Alonso grew up in Hialeah and graduated from Miami Edison Senior High School and MiamiDade College. He lived in the Carol City area before relocating to Palm Springs North. In 1988, he moved to the upscale community of Royal Oaks, which became part of the Town of Miami Lakes following incorporation in 2000. Alonso was a successful commercial real estate agent for years
and was part of the initiative to install three guard gate districts in Royal Oaks through MiamiDade’s Special Taxing District that has resulted in virtually a “nocrime” rate. A past president of the Royal Oaks Homeowners Association, Alonso and his neighbors created a program that kept their area immaculate and increased their property values through strict deed restrictions for years. Following Miami Lakes’ incorporation, Alonso won a seat on the Town Council during the city’s inaugural election by defeating Anabel Estevez, and he won reelection in 2004 when he narrowly beat Diane Dominguez. He ran for mayor in 2008 but lost to Michael Pizzi, his colleague on the Town Council since 2001. During his tenure as a councilmember, Alonso made Royal Oaks Park, initially a tot-lot, his pet project, and through his efforts, the site was converted to a fullfledged park and recreation facility with a state-of-the art Community Center, where councilmembers held their regular meetings before moving into the new government center on Main Street. He played a significant role in the town’s decision to not annex a large section of land west of 1-75 in 2003 because it was devoid of infrastructure at the time, and would have cost a lot of money to clean up the contaminated area with a landfill. Hialeah eventually annexed the property. After the city outlined a financial plan to place infrastructure there, including roads and water and sewer, and build commercial and industrial buildings and recreation facilities, Alonso pointed out the expenses would have cost
Miami Lakes about 86 percent of its budget had the town annexed the property. While Miami-Dade sought land to build a permanent fire station to achieve a better response time for emergencies on the west side of Miami Lakes, Alonso discovered some vacant land that belonged to FDOT near Miami Lakes Drive and N.W. 77 Court. In working with Miami Lakes and county officials, the state agency turned over the land with the condition that Miami-Dade could only erect a fire station there. The county is scheduled to start construction later this year or in early 2014. Being a Realtor, sales was Alonso’s true calling. He sold mangos to earn his own money by asking his Hialeah neighbor for all the fruits dangling from his huge tree. In a twist, Alonso said he sold all of the mangos to the same man. “The same guy bought all the mangos,” he quipped laughing. Alonso went on to other sales jobs before he landed the ultimate sales job as a commercial real estate agent. But he said he hasn’t forgotten where he came from thanks to the Pedro Pan operation. “As soon as I came to Miami, I became a man,” he said. “It makes me appreciate life more and the value of my family. I know what it is to come from nothing.” Alonso is survived by his wife, Idania; three children, Jessica Mendoza (Jesus); Christine Alonso; Roberto Alonso Jr. (Alexandra); and four grandchildren, Kaylee Mendoza, Joshua Mendoza, Roberto A. Alonso and Oliver Alonso, A viewing and memorial service was held on September 27 at Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church. Following the service, Miami Lakes police escorted a procession to Vista Memorial Gardens for internment. The family has requested donations in Alonso’s memory to the Carcinoid Awareness Organization at www.carcinoidawareness.org.

Theatre Review:
Marvelous Wonderettes is just simply Marvelous By Roselind Romero The Miami Laker staff The audience at the Main Street Playhouse will have the opportunity to relive their prom at the final production of the year, The Marvelous Wonderettes. The Springfield High prom queen nominees, Missy, Cindy Lou, Betty Jean, and Suzy, eagerly await the votes of the crowd for the “Dream Queen” of 1958 in a play that evokes the femininity of the ’50s and the empowerment of the late ’60s. When the four-harmony girl band, The Marvelous Wonderettes, is called in as a last minute replacement for their prom night entertainment, they perform classics such as “Mr. Sandman,” “Lucky Lips,” and “Stupid Cupid,” as they wait for the ballots for prom queen to roll in, and some tumultuous friendship issues come to light in the process. Betty Jean (Emily Barona), Cindy Lou (Carolina Pozo), Missy (Brianna Mackey), and Suzy (Gaby Tortoledo), sing of love, heartache, betrayal, and secrets that threaten to tear apart the group.
Betty Jean struggles to have her voice heard as the spotlight runs from her onstage while she scrambles to complete her solos. Cindy Lou is every man’s dream, including those already taken, and Missy is comically obsessed with the idea of a “marvelous” life, or at the least, a marvelous performance. Suzy is about as sweet as the gum she insists on saving during musical numbers (by tacking it on fountains and microphone stands), and then retrieving it once she’s finished singing. The “Dream Queen” is announced and the girls go their separate ways before regrouping as The Marvelous Wonderettes at the 1968 class reunion. The remnants of severed friendships still stand as the girls contemplate their years out of high school through songs like “All I Have To Do Is Dream,” “It’s My Party,” “Rescue Me,” and “Respect.” The play follows the triumphs and losses of four girls caught in a generation filled with change that shapes them from “marvelous” prom queen hopefuls, to takecharge women of the late ’60s complete with leather jackets and

soul-infused solos. “My husband and I are both late Baby Boomers, once-utopian former hippies, who believe in art and music as a healing and uniting force. I am filled with wonder at the timelessness of these songs, which make no bones about their appeal to the common ground of human emotions – love, loss and yearning,” said The Marvelous director Carla Wonderettes Zackson Heller. The shift in attitude and era, however, had no bearing on the quality of music which was consistently brilliant, performed by a live band who doubled as the disembodied voices of the boy’s locker room. Andrew Gilbert served as Musical Director with percussionist Jesse Balber and bassist Nick Katz. The production would not be possible without the direction of Heller, producers Clara Lyzniak and Michael Fernandez, Cindy Castillo as stage manager, and designers Michael Stopnick, Josette Gillete, Marcelo Ferreira, Bill Heller and Dennis Lyzniak. The Marvelous Wonderettes at the Main Street Playhouse will run Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m., and Sundays at 2 p.m., until October 13. Tickets are $25 for adults and $18 for seniors (62+) and students (with I.D.). Tickets are available online at www.mainstreetplayers.com, and at the door, if available, 30 minutes before show time.

News and Notes from the Town of Miami Lakes Government Center nominated for Outstanding LEED honor On September 21, the U.S. Green Building Council held its annual event to recognize and honor outstanding projects, inspirational businesses, dedicated individuals, and instrumental South Florida Chapter members who are LEEDing the way to a more sustainably-built environment in the
South Florida community. With 17 awards distributed and over 75 applicants in total, the best of the best in LEED Certified Buildings in South Florida were honored. Some of the project categories included Public, Private, Single Family, Municipal, Educational, Healthcare and
Corporate. The Town of Miami Lakes Government Center, which had received the LEED Gold Certification on September 12, was nominated in the Outstanding LEED New Construction Project, Public Building category. “While we did not win the top
award, the LEED certification is a mark of achievement and a result of efforts by the design team of KVC Constructors and town staff,” said Mayor Ceasar Mestre. The certification process awards points in seven categories – sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, indoor environmental quality, innovation in design and regional priority credits. The KVC team and town staff focused on the functionality and operations of the public building for resident services and employee
performance. Sustainable features include highly efficient HVAC systems, low lighting levels with work spaces equipped with lighting controls, use of daylighting, and significant water-saving measures within the building and across the site. "I would like to thank the key leaders in this initiative including the architect, LEED consultant, and the contractor who went beyond their contractual duties to provide a high-performing sustainable facility," said Mestre.

News and Notes from the Town of Miami Lakes Town Seal presented to Senator Rene Garcia Schwinghammer’s Eagle Scout project provides Poetry Park at Sabal Drive location Miami Lakes resident and Boy Scout member Broderick Schwinghammer recently completed an Eagle Scout project at the neighborhood town park located at 7350 Sabal Drive. The concept of the project for a poetry park was an idea that Schwinghammer brought to the town. The goal was to improve the condition of the park and better the Miami Lakes community . As part of the project, an existing wall was opened to provide public access to the area behind the wall, the property was cleaned of garbage, and a nature trail was created on the property leading to
view of the adjacent canal with seating areas for “creative thinking and writing” such as poetry. The area provides a unique nature trail feeling in a local suburban neighborhood. As part of the project, Schwinghammer held a community meeting in June to present his proposed ideas to surrounding residents. On September 5, Mayor Ceasar Mestre and Community and Leisure Services director Tony Lopez met with Schwinghammer at the park to see the project first hand which is scheduled to be open in October.

Sen. Bob Graham’s daughter, Gwen, holds fundraiser for her FL-02 Congressional campaign A well-known group of Miami Lakes residents hosted a fundraiser on September 25 to support Gwen Graham’s campaign for U.S. Congress representing Florida’s Congressional District 2 (FL-02). The candidate is the daughter of Senator Bob Graham and his wife, Adele, who were special guests for the event held at Shula’s Steak House on Miami Lakes Drive. The host committee included Robert and Kendall Elias, Arnold and Perla Hantman, Luis and Beth Martinez, Dominic and Andrea Rechichi, Dave and Leslie Shula, and Stu and Carol Wyllie. A Democrat nominee, Gwen Graham is opposing incumbent Republican Steve Southerland who is considered one of the most vulnerable incumbents in 2014. FL-02 is a widely diverse district spanning 14 counties in northwest Florida, including Panama City and Tallahassee. The district is home to several colleges and universities, including Florida State, Florida A&M, and Gulf Coast State College. Gwen Graham’s path to northwest Florida is a unique one. She was born in 1963 in Miami Lakes and began spending part of each year in Tallahassee when her father, Bob Graham, was elected to the Florida House of Representatives in 1966. When her father was elected Governor in 1978, the family moved to Tallahassee year-round and she graduated from Leon High School in 1980. After receiving a bachelor’s
degree from the University of North Carolina, she earned a law degree from American University in 1988 and went on to work in the private sector on energy and environmental issues. With the birth of her first child, Sarah, in 1990 Gwen Graham began to focus on her family and spent 13 years as a stay-at-home mom. Her family grew with the addition of two sons, Graham and Mark Ernest. She is married to Stephen D. Hurm, a sworn-in law enforcement officer and general counsel for Florida’s Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. With all three children attending public schools, Gwen Graham returned to practicing law when Leon County School Superintendent Jackie Pons asked her to join his administration as Director of Employee Relations, later promoting her to Division Director for Professional Standards and chief of Labor and Employee Relations. Working to find solutions for disputes between employees and management, she became known as a real problem solver and developed a strong relationship with both sides, earning a reputation as a cool-headed negotiator, able to build consensus out of conflict. “Growing up, my dad told me citizenship requires us to do more than complain about our problems, we have to work together to fix them,” she said. “We need more people in both parties committed to working together and finding real solutions.”

Dianne’s Impressions certified in oncological skin therapy Sarah Metral, lead aesthetician at Dianne's Impressions Salon in Miami Lakes, has completed the rigorous training program leading to her certification as an Oncological Skin Therapist. With that, Dianne's Impressions becomes the first, if not the only, facility in Southeast Florida that is authorized to provide post chemotherapy and radiation treatments using the De La Terre Skincare® methods and products. "We're delighted to be able to add these services to those we already provide in the skin care area, and to be able to be of help to
so many who are in need," said Dianne Traub, owner of Impressions, a Miami Lakes institution since 1982. "It seems that every time you look around, someone else you know has to go through some kind of cancer therapy or another." According to Anne C. Willis, CEO of De La Terre, a skin therapy treatment plan can be vital for a patient's well-being and can substantially reduce risks associated with chemotherapy-related skin toxicity and radiation burns." She goes on to say, "While the most obvious part and compelling
objective of Oncological Skin Therapy is the healing of skin ravaged by such medical procedures, the body and spirit derive substantial collateral benefits as the soothing, palliative treatments also work to relieve the patient's stress and anxiety." Traub is quick to point out that what separates the De La Terre
products and techniques from the rest are the impressive qualifications required of the professionals who administer them and the quality and purity of the products themselves. De La Terre Skincare® products are certified to be vegan and free of synthetics, mineral oils, paragons, and petrochemicals.
Nationally acclaimed, they are manufactured in FDA-registered facilities and in compliance with NPA standards. Anyone desiring a free consultation or more information is invited to call Dianne's Impressions at 305-556-6565 or request an appointment online at www.DiannesImpressions.com.

Lakes residents Sergio and Elizabeth Freay open Sureel Photography Studio By Roselind Romero The Miami Laker staff In a market saturated with amateur photographers, Miami Lakes residents Sergio Freay and his wife Elizabeth, owners of Sureel Photography Studio, bring over 25 years of experience to potential clients. Sureel Photography Studio, tucked between AT&T and The Broadcast Center on Main Street in Miami Lakes, is hosting a grand opening celebration on Saturday, October 5. The studio's grand opening will include a raffle for a free photography package that normally retails for $300. A free 8X10 photograph and 30 percent discount will also be given to those who sign-up for the emailing list on-site. Sergio Freay first became interested in the industry after taking a high school course on photography, and his wife has always had a passion for working with children. "We decided to follow our passions," said Freay. They combined their pursuits to create Sureel Photography and have been photographing on-location until acquiring studio space in Main Street. They now offer studio portraits in addition to their on-location photography.
SUREEL PHOTOGRAPHY STUDIO owners, Sergio and Elizabeth Freay, are hosting a grand opening for their studio located on Main Street on October 5. Sureel Photography encompasses maternity shoots, newborns, engagements, weddings, head-shots, portraits for individuals, families, and children, real estate, sports, quinces, senior photos, and special events among others. Sureel Photography also offers graphic design services and videography. "I came from the days of negatives and dark rooms," said Freay.
‘Party in Pink’ set for Oct. 18 “It’s time to Party, Prevent and Prevail together!” That’s the theme for the “Party In Pink” Zumbathon® charity event scheduled from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Friday, October 18, at Shula’s Athletic Club, 15151 Bull Run Road, in Miami Lakes. Miami Lakes area residents are invited to exercise their right as a Zumba® community and rock out with friends for a good cause to help raise funds for global research that could ultimately save
millions of lives around the world. Shula’s is providing the venue and food and all ticket proceeds will be donated to the Zumba® Global Research Grant for Breast Cancer Prevention. Susan G. Komen for the Cure will manage the medical research grant. Pre-sale tickets are $15 and will be available at Shula’s Athletic Club’s front desk. Tickets at the door will be $20 and only 250 tickets will be sold.
"I've gone from the dark room to the computer. Photography is a combination of knowing how to manipulate the lighting and settings and knowing how to enhance shots on programs like Photoshop and Illustrator. It can't be just one or the other and that's what sets us apart. We built on what we learned back then and combine it with new media." Sureel Photography Studio is open Wednesdays through Sundays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 6820 Main Street, Miami Lakes. For more information on packages, galleries, and booking appointments visit www.sureel photography.com or call 305-9144886.

by Cristina Armand, Public Information Officer Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Department We live in a world where we are expected to always be available and get back to people immediately. Many people cannot disconnect while behind the wheel and it just takes a second of distraction to cause an accident. Starting October 1, texting and driving is illegal in the state of Florida. The “Florida Ban on Texting While Driving Law” prohibits the operation of a motor vehicle while using a wireless communication device to manually type or enter multiple letters, numbers, symbols, or other characters. It also includes sending and reading data on cellular phones which can include text messages, e-mails, and instant messaging. The intent of this ban is to improve roadway safety for drivers, vehicle passengers, bicyclists, and pedestrians. It will also help to prevent crashes caused by distracted driving and will reduce injuries, deaths, property damage, health insurance rates, and automobile insurance rates. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 10 percent of injury crashes in 2011 involved reports of distracted driving. Drivers under the age of 20 represented the greatest number of distracted drivers, and 11 percent of drivers under 20 involved in fatal crashes were reported to have been distracted while driving. Texting while driving is one of the most dangerous forms of distracted driving. It makes a driver take their hands off the wheel,

The Town of Miami Lakes, M. L. Civic Association, homeowners associations, professional and volunteer groups have scheduled meetings and classes during October:
The Station Scene Texting and Driving is Now Illegal in Florida Distracted driving has happened to all of us. It can range from reading a text message while stopped at a red light, to trying to eat lunch on the go between meetings. Today, more than ever, there are many ways one can get distracted while on the road.

eyes off of the road, and their mind off of driving. If you must use your phone, be mindful of the following: • When possible, pull off the road and stop in a safe place, like a parking lot, before using your phone. • Avoid complicated and emotional conversation while driving. Even if you are using a hands free device, your mind will be on the conversation and not on the road. • Advise the person you are talking to that you are driving and that you will call them back later, especially if you are driving in heavy traffic or in inclement weather. • Never write a note while driving. Have the person you are talking to text the information to you. You can also use the speech-totext application on your Smartphone to take brief messages. • Steer clear of looking up a phone number while driving. Sending or receiving a text message takes a driver’s eyes off of the road for an average of 4.6 seconds. If you are driving an average of 55 mph, it would equal the length of a football field blindly. It seems like every day we hear of more and more incidents of people injured or even killed in car accidents due to distracted driving. Twice-weekly senior softball program enters 5th year The Miami Lakes Senior Softball program is celebrating the start of its fifth year. In September 2009, George Pringle worked with
the Town of Miami Lakes Elderly Affairs Committee to implement the program. Today, Pringle is a star performer.
Games are held at 9 a.m. every Monday and Wednesday on Field No. 2 at Miami Lakes Optimist Park. Male players are 60 and older while females of any age are invited to play, and several very talented females have participated. The games do not include any base running, which minimizes leg and arm injuries. This also enables seniors, who no longer can run, to
play. The rules are structured to enhance participation and enjoyment. Bats and balls are provided. Players bring their own gloves. In addition to Pringle, current regular players include Jose Caballero, Andres Clavijo, Lee Collins, Bruce Davidson, Glenn Davis, Mariano Fernandez, Peter Fishel, Ernie Garcia, Rick Garcia, Roland Gomez (when in town),
Jim Hamilton (when not at Miami Lakes Sports Shop), Angel Hernandez, Bob Jones, Jackie King, Terry Kushi, Dave Oliver, Alfredo Rodriguez, Fred Rodriguez, Angel Sosa, Gary Snow and Donna Tormes. Anyone interested in playing or having questions are asked to call Dave Oliver at 305-822-9680.

The Miami Wildcats 16-andunder softball team recently won the ESPN/USSSA World Series Championship in Orlando, Florida. Forty-six teams competed in the 16-and -under division, including teams from California, New York, New Jersey, Florida, Arizona and Alabama, during the eight-day tournament. The Wildcats went undefeated in the winners bracket putting them straight into the championship series. The girls faced off versus South Alabama Elite who gave them their first loss of the tournament but “these girls came to the World Series with a mission,” said coach Charlie Veiga. “They came back to bring the trophy home.” In the second game, the Wildcats bounced back by shutting out Alabama 12-0 to win the championship title. “It was a complete team effort,”

said Veiga. “Every single girl responded when her number was called and we couldn’t be prouder of them.” Several Wildcats members played in the Miami Lakes
Optimist Club’s softball program. Besides receiving individual first place crystal trophies, for the first time ever, the team will be receiving individual personalized World Series rings from USSA.

Shaky Rodriguez hosts basketball coaches symposium By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff Basketball coaches for high schools, the Optimist Club, and parks and recreation, will have a golden opportunity to learn basketball pointers, techniques and strategies from some of the best pro and college coaches. Legendary high school basketball coach Shaky Rodriguez has organized a basketball symposium and clinic and invited an all-star coaching line-up that includes former Orlando Magic and Miami Heat head coach Stan Van Gundy and University of South Carolina head coach Frank Martin. The event, sponsored by South Florida Children Charities, is scheduled for Saturday, October 26 at Mater Academy, 7901 N.W. 103rd Street. Rodriguez, who coached Miami High to five state titles and last coached Krop Senior High School, said the clinic will feature a series
of coaches who will educate coaches on how to prepare their team to play, with pointers on defense, offense and how to motivate their players. Van Gundy spent twelve years with the Miami Heat organization, beginning as an assistant coach to Pat Riley in 1995 and became head coach during the 2003-2004 season. He resigned in 2006 and Pat Riley took over the helm again and led the Heat to its first NBA World Championship. Van Gundy returned to coaching and led the Orlando Magic to the 2009 NBA Finals, where they lost to the Los Angeles Lakers in five games. Martin, an FIU graduate, was named head men's basketball coach at the University of South Carolina in 2012. He became the 32nd head coach in the history of the South Carolina program, which enters its 105th season as a
SHAKY RODRIGUEZ varsity sport in 2012-13. Martin spent the previous five seasons as the head coach at Kansas State University, leading the Wildcats to the NCAA Tournament four times, including a trip to the Elite Eight during the 2009-10 campaign when the squad won a school-record 29 contests. Martin's Wildcats won at least
STAN VAN GUNDY 21 games in each of his five seasons at the helm, compiling a record of 117-54 (.684). During that time, Kansas State posted a 50-32 (.609) record in Big 12 Conference games, finishing fifth or higher in each season, while finishing third or higher three times. Martin was the first Wildcat head coach to post a 20-win season in
FRANK MARTIN each of his first five seasons and the first coach to guide the school to the postseason in his first five years at the helm. In all, Martin has helped coach four AllAmericans since he became coach in 2007. For more information about the event and time, call 305-310-4582.

Even without starting quarterback Treon Harris, who missed the game with an injury, Monsignor Pace High was still no match for the No. team in the nation, Booker T. Washington, as the Tornadoes destroyed the Spartans 49-7 in the two teams’ first district game. Last week, the Tornadoes engineered a running game that Pace didn’t have an answer for, rushing for a total 180 yards on 15 carries and scoring four running touchdowns. Without Harris, Booker T. Washington’s passing game was-

In other high school football action, American wiped out West Hialeah, 57-6, to win its second straight district game. Patriots quarterback Ed Crouch connected with wide receiver Kama Barnes for a total of 80 yards and three touchdowns.
Miami Springs trounced district rival Hialeah-Miami Lakes, 42-0, to keep its winning streak alive at four games. Golden Hawks running back Johnny Rembrick ran for three touchdowns in the win after missing two games with an ankle injury. The Trojans turned the ball over four times. Goleman was seeking its first win of the season but Alonso and Tracy Mourning High spoiled the Gators’ plans with a 20-19 victory.

By Roselind Romero The Miami Laker staff Intensity Dancer's Studio is celebrating the achievements of students Jeanelle Gomez, who was selected as one of 24 dancers to join the Miami Heat Dancers team for the 2013-2014 season, and Kandis Terry and Katie Camero, who completed an intensive program with the Rockettes, a New York based dance group. Gomez, daughter of Miami Lakes residents Teresita and Jose Gomez, was selected out of over 500 dancers who auditioned for a spot on the team. Heat Dancers director Natalia Gomez (no relation) led the weeklong audition sessions at the American Airlines Arena which began judging on choreography with cuts through three rounds. After round 3, qualifying dancers entered the Heat Dance Boot Camp which begins with a 12 hour dance day that goes beyond dancing to include basketball drills and exercises. After the boot camp the remaining 58 dancers danced to a full house at the Miami-Dade County auditorium. Only 24 dancers made the cut. "I feel like all those years of dancing has finally paid off. This accomplishment made all the training, sweat and tears I've endured, worth it," said Gomez.
Gomez also had to compete with previous Heat Dancers who have to earn their position every season. At only 18, Gomez is fresh out of Mater Lakes Academy, where she attended high school and is currently attending FIU for her major in Political Science. Terry and Camero completed a week-long intensive dance program with the Radio City Rockettes. The Rockettes are a precision dance group that has made its home at Radio City Music Hall in New York City since 1932, and perform over 200 shows during the Christmas season at the Radio City Christmas Spectacular, the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and the NBC Rockefeller Center Christmas show. Rockette hopefuls must show proficiency in many different styles of dance including ballet, tap, modern, and jazz. Terry and Camero are both 16 and attend New World School of the Arts. They have been Intensity Dancer's Studio students since the age of 7. This is the second consecutive year they have been selected for the program. They plan to move to New York City following graduation for college, and to pursue their dreams of being Rockettes.

THE MIAMI LAKER
Pace welcomes freshmen with memorable events By Maya Lora Special to The Miami Laker You can go ahead and admit it – freshman year of high school is one of the most intimidating experiences for young teenagers across the country. Striding into a new school with a lot of unfamiliar
faces, brand-new teachers, and crash-landing into the bottom of the social food chain is not an alltogether enjoyable adventure. Well, at least that's true at most schools. At Monsignor Edward Pace High School, however, no freshman has to walk in with any
fear. The Pace traditions that have been in place for almost as long as the school's foundation make freshman year not only bearable, but also memorable. Through two events, The Spartan Experience and Freshmen Orientation Week, the newcomers to the school get
their first taste of their new school in an amazing way. The Spartan Experience is a form of acclimation for freshmen as they enter into a brand new environment in an enjoyable manner; this helps them to be able to walk into school on their first day without any fear, shyness, or stress. They are welcomed onto campus the week before the official school year starts, and they are there for a day led by sophomore, junior, and senior leadership volunteers. This year, the freshmen were welcomed into a "Spartan Boot Camp" in which they were the soldiers in training, the volunteers acted as the sergeants, and the deans were the overlooking superiors. Throughout the first half of the day, these slightly intimidated new soldiers set up their iPads for use for the rest of the year, learned about discipline, and got a briefing on appropriate technology use when they were split into three groups. After a pasta lunch, the soldiers were filtered into the gym for some hard-core training brought to them by their leading sergeants. They got to express their hopes and fears for the next four years of their life, they watched presentations, and they even got to participate in fun games so they could loosen up a little and see that high school can be fun and carefree rather than overwhelming. They were able to start school the next week with a weight lifted off their shoulders; high school was going to be an enjoyable escapade after
all! The warm freshmen-welcome doesn't end in that one day. In September, there is an entire week dedicated to initiating the freshmen into the Pace family through lots of events. The week kicks off with a senior-freshman partnership, in which each freshman is “purchased” by a senior and is handed a t-shirt themed for the week. This year's theme was “Toy Story” marking the seniors as "Pace Rangers" and the freshmen as their little green aliens. The second day is one every senior looks forward to and every Pace student remembers – the freshmen are left to the mercy of their seniors and are dressed up in costume for the entire day. This year, the halls were filled with the likes of Miley Cyrus, Despicable Me minions, and fairies among many other creative costume ideas as the freshmen class were all equally embarrassed, but laughing together. The rest of the week consists of activities, games, and traditions leading up to Friday where the seniors take on the freshmen head-to-head in a series of unforgettable games and challenges. My senior-versus-freshmen pep rally is one of my fondest freshman year memories, and getting to compete in an environment that was immensely welcoming is something so powerful that it makes a very long lasting impression. These traditions are the very best glimpse into the life of a Pace Spartan, and every person who goes through them comes out smiling.

Pace High students participate in International Coastal Cleanup event By Ethan Rivero Special to The Miami Laker On Saturday, September 21, members of the Monsignor Edward Pace High School Environmental Club, National Honor Society, and Science National Honor Society participated in the International Coastal Cleanup at Florida International University’s Biscayne Bay Campus. The International Coastal Cleanup is an event organized through local chapters of the Ocean Conservancy, which is
meant to assist in protecting our coasts and help educate the public on the issues and problems that marine pollution causes to our beautiful oceans. The students at Pace High School have been a part of this effort for the past three years, with increasing student participation in each of those years. While it was gratifying to help clean up coastal pollution, as the Environmental Club president, I feel that the existence of such extensive pollution shows there is still a lack of environmental

awareness in South Florida on the effects of coastal pollution. I hope there will be day when students can come to our coastal areas and not find over 70 pounds of debris within two hours of cleanup that has been tossed into our coastal environment. The Pace students were able to collect bags and bags of debris, including bottles, plastic bags, styrofoam, and household products negligently left behind. We all feel strongly that maintaining our marine environment is both the right thing to do for our planet and our local economy! With the continued guidance and support of Ana Millan, the Environmental Club Moderator, and Luis Mayo, the National Honor Society and Science National Honor Society moderator, Pace High School students hope to continue participating in this event and look forward to raising awareness in their school and community in order to mitigate the long term effects of pollution.

M.L. Educational Ctr. leads Syria Speak via Twitter By Flavia Cuervo Special to The Miami Laker and Miami Laker staff In an age of global awareness and hashtag activism, a large part of civic involvement in journalism occurs on social networking sites. On Thursday, September 5, the staff of Miami Lakes Educational Center's (MLEC) student newspaper, The Harbinger, made the
hashtag__#SyriaSpeak trend on Twitter throughout an hour and a half long, student led, discussion about the crisis in Syria. MLEC students effectively used social media as a platform for noteworthy and considerate political discussion. Although social media is often criticized for being a distraction, the tide is moving in the direction
of using it as a teaching tool, something Miami-Dade County superintendent Alberto Carvalho agrees with, as shown by recent initiatives taken to "cyber" enhance classrooms. "We have to meet students where they are," Carvalho said, referring to technology and social media. A total of 363 users and 804
Monsignor Edward Pace High School holds Peer Ministry Workshop On any Saturday morning, school hallways are typically empty, but not at Monsignor Edward Pace High School. Campus Ministry leaders and Pace alumni, Andres Novela, Patricia Stout-Swanson, and Jeanette Victoria, gathered with 35 students on Saturday, September 14, for a Peer Ministry Workshop. During this unique opportunity, phones were collected as a way for everyone to disconnect from the stresses of everyday life. The workshop provided a comfortable environment where students learned how to be effective leaders for the school's various annual spiritual retreats. Icebreakers began the day, allowing students to get to know one another in a more relaxed and fun way. Different speakers led talks about effective Christian leadership and the importance of spirituality in students' lives. The students took notes and participat-
ed in discussions. A prayer service led by Novela, ended the four-hour workshop and students left fulfilled, ready to be effective leaders for the school. "The workshop was refresh-
ing," said senior Christy Pi単a. "It was like a mini-retreat. We got away from the outside world and it was just us, my fellow peer ministers and me."

tweets (475 retweets) in two days made #SyriaSpeak a trending topic in the United States, the 141st trending hashtag, receiving thousands of tweets from several hundred accounts. A topic trends on Twitter after a large number of people tweet about it. Within minutes the event had gained the attention of students from all over Dade County, like Anthony Horta, a senior at North Miami Senior High School, and from alumni across the country like Javon Brown, studying at the University of Chicago in Illinois. Long after students had finished their discussion, the hashtag continued to be used by people all across the country. Ricardo Romero, student at MLEC, said "The discussion was a good idea. I liked that a lot of people were able to join in on Twitter, even people who don't go to our school." The staff of The Harbinger, has been building their online presence for the last two years, using Twitter to report on topics like the presidential debates and election, which manifested from cyber commentary to in-school action when they later hosted a mock debate and election for students. The Harbinger Twitter handle @HarbingerMLEC acted as a bipartisan force of discussion, periodically asking questions like "Can we afford another war" and "What happens if Congress votes no?" Students and other Twitter users engaged with one another, questioning viewpoints, providing potential solutions, supporting ideas and, at times, even changing them. "It seems that throughout this discussion, some contributors have
changed their minds. Power of conversation?" Neyda Borges, advisor for The Harbinger tweeted. In 140 allowed characters, users managed to ask the difficult questions Americans have been contemplating since the proposal to launch an airstrike against Syria, and giving compelling responses. The conversation spanned topics such as moral obligations, the effectiveness of the UN, the oftmentioned "red line", chemical weapons, and drawing comparisons between the Gulf War, World War II and the Civil War. Tweets later revisited the conversation on Syria following President Obama's address on Tuesday, September 10. "Has the President's address done anything to assuage to people's concerns? So much is still uncertain," tweeted The Harbinger. Students at MLEC started the discussion to raise awareness and encourage thoughtful dialogue. They hope to continue Twitter talks about other global issues. Superintendent Carvalho chimed in on Twitter after the discussion to say this: "Proud of Miami-Dade's students and their impressive global awareness. Our future is promising because of them." The superintendent also lent his own opinion. "As the world's superpower, America does not have the moral right of silence on human rights abuses," Carvalho tweeted. To see tweets from the discussion follow the link https://storify.com/FlaviaCervo/miami-lakeseducational-center-s-the-harbinger-tre or search the hashtag #SyriaSpeak on Twitter.

Echoes of the Heart Reflections on Life and Community Living By Dr. Jeffrey E. Frantz, Miami Lakes Congregational Church (Contact Dr. Frantz on the web at www.mlcchurch.com.) Keep "the main thing" the main thing. As we think about our lives, with all that is on our plate, amidst all the chaos that surrounds us, one of the most important things we can do is to keep "the main thing" the main thing. In our family lives, the main thing is making the necessary personal sacrifices for the wellbeing of the whole family; this requires a prioritizing of time and a focusing of energy. There is no short cut; the main thing is the love that unites and sustains the family unit. In sports like tennis and golf, the main thing is playing to our strengths and remembering what our game is. In team sports, clearly, the main thing is a willingness to sacrifice personal achievements for the well-being of the team. In the business world, the main thing is to stay focused on the big

picture of what your business is about, of what you are good at, and not getting distracted by temptations that lose sight of the main thing. John D. Rockefeller was once asked what his secret was for success as a business man. Three things, he reportedly said. Go to work early, stay late and find oil. Part of the challenge here is that it is easy to get distracted in life. It's easy to get off track, to allow greed, ambition and short-term gratification to nudge us off our game. Remember who you are. I've been a local church pastor for some four decades and I can tell you, churches have to take great care to stay focused on the core values of their mission and purpose. If they are not careful, easily, churches can get off track over the latest thing, or, for example, over the excitement and lure of secular success (i.e., when worship becomes performance). Felton Yergen, the lead singer of the band, Homeland, has performed in dozens of churches around the country. A keen observer of churches, he could not help but notice that many of them were struggling. When asked his advice, his immediate reply was: Many of them have forgotten to keep "the main thing" the main thing. All the time, churches get caught up in survival impulses where concerns over money and maintenance dominate their agenda. No matter what your life situation, it is important to remember who you are – who you are at your best. If you have enjoyed success in your life, remember what it was that got you there; remember what you do best. If failure has marked your life in recent times, go back to drawing board. Reevaluate your
gifts and strengths; come up with a new plan and start afresh. And when you uncover the main thing, keep "the main thing" the main thing. The courage to be who you are. To keep "the main thing" the main thing, at some point we have to have the courage to be who we are. With external pressures, to say nothing of the harsh realities of life, sometimes we have to stand our ground. Chaim Potok was a Jewish American author and rabbi who was known for his 1967 novel, The Chosen. Potok was an intensely religious man, a man of considerable intellect and depth who explored issues of faith through his writing. From early on, he remembers, he knew he wanted to be a writer. However, as he tells the story, his mother wasn't so sure. It was her dream that he become a brain surgeon. You'll keep people from dying, she prodded him; and not only that, you'll make a lot of money. No mama, he would say. I want to be a writer. But that was not what his mother wanted to hear, so during every vacation from school, for four years, she would repeat her comments about his becoming a brain surgeon. It would be a great career for you, she would say, and you'll keep a lot of people from dying, and make a lot of money. Finally the son had enough and the next time his mother started in on him, exasperated, he cut her off and with great passion, told her: Mama, I don't want to keep people from dying, I want to show them how to live. For Chaim Potok, showing people how to live through his writing was the main thing.
