Cars for a Cure will line Main St. on Sunday, April 2 Miami Lakes is the place to be on Sunday, April 2, when the third annual Miami Lakes Cars for a Cure takes over Main Street featuring live entertainment, food and some of the best classic vehicles on display, to honor cancer patients including the man who brought the event to town. The cancer awareness event, which is scheduled for 10 a.m., is sponsored by AutoNation and The Graham Companies and will feature the Mantrap band, celebrity chef Andy Bates from the Avenue serving up some of his most famous dishes, plus Cuban Guys Restaurants, Giardinos Gourmet Salads and more. For the first time, the event will have a full bar provided by Mac Pub’s Classic Truck Bar serving craft beers and classic car cocktails, a Touch Zone sponsored by TD Bank and RVs from the Miami-Dade Police Department and Fire-Rescue Department. Miami-Dade County Commission Chairman Esteban Bovo is providing the stage for the entertainment. Roberto Alonso Jr., the event organizer, said the goal is to have a day long family-fun event. “Kids and the adults can go inside the classic cars and look at the big trucks,” he said. “All the food and live entertainment people will really enjoy but also raise awareness of cancer.” He said the event is an emotional tribute to his father, Roberto Alonso Sr., Miami Lakes’ first vice mayor. The elder Alonso created the first classic car show and his son kept his creation alive following his death from cancer in 2013, but added raising money for the University of Miami Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. The Cars for a Cure event wouldn’t be the same without Roberto Alonso Sr.’s 1964 Classic Coup, which will be on display along with 170 classic cars on Main Street. “The car is a living legacy my father left behind to raise cancer awareness,” Alonso Jr., said.

Questions and answers stem from Graham’s Senior Village workshop On February 28, The Graham Companies hosted a workshop to discuss a proposed Senior Village for Miami Lakes. It was discussed that an increasingly important component was never included to the Town’s master plan – senior housing and elderly care. This void in the master plan has been discussed many times over the last decade by local government officials, the Elderly Affairs Committee, and Miami Lakes residents. Finally, a comprehensive plan to address senior living in the Town is being proposed by The Graham Companies. The plan outlined at the workshop addressed four major components of senior living – independent living, assisted living, skilled nursing care, and a community/ activity center. The Graham Companies would build and operate a 220-unit agerestricted rental community. Miami Jewish Health, one of

South Florida’s leading providers of services for seniors, would operate a 100-bed assisted living facility and an 80-bed skilled nursing facility. Further, The Graham Companies proposed to donate a 1.3-acre site and a 6,000 square-foot shell building to the Town for a senior community center. Miami Lakes residents attending the workshop expressed various concerns including traffic, age restrictions, pricing, preference for Miami Lakes residents, and the need for a senior center. With respect to traffic, it was discussed that the proposed development would produce significantly less traffic than what may otherwise be developed on the site. The topic of age restrictions was answered that 55+ is the industry norm but understanding that the typical resident is usually significantly older. Pricing was not specifically

detailed, only addressed by indicating that rental rates of the apartments would be based on market conditions. Preference for Miami Lakes residents poses a problem given the potential for discriminatory claims while also limiting the ability of current residents to move family and friends into their community. Several residents questioned whether the Town needs a new senior center. They were referred to Town staff and elected officials as bringing a new senior center to Miami Lakes has been a goal of the Town for years. Representatives of The Graham Companies stated they believe this is a truly unique opportunity for the Town that may never come again. If the available lakefront land is otherwise developed, there will not be another opportunity for the development of a Senior Village in Miami Lakes. The proposed development is an opportunity not only for Town residents to age in place, but also an opportunity for Town residents that would like elderly members of their families to receive services in Miami Lakes. First reading for the land use and zoning changes necessary to allow the Senior Village to move forward is scheduled for the April 18 Town Council meeting. The Graham Companies is making information about the Senior Village available at www.grahamresidential.com.

Miami Lakes’ Relay for Life scheduled for Sat., March 25 Relay for Life is the American Cancer Society’s signature event and a celebration of hope, progress and answers. Relay is a team event where members take turns walking around a designated path, with at least one participant from each team on the track at all times to signify that cancer never sleeps, cancer patients don’t stop because they’re tired, and for one night neither do participants. The Miami Lakes Relay for Life event is scheduled for Saturday, March 25, from 3 p.m. to midnight at Miami Lakes Optimist Park, 15700 N.W. 67 Avenue. MPO approves moving ahead with three ramps connecting N.W. 67 Avenue to Gratigny X-way

MIAMI LAKES MAYOR Manny Cid speaks to the Fiscal Priorities MPO’s Committee and urges acceptance of proposed connections from N.W. 67 Avenue to the Gratigny Expressway.

Construction for a roadway project to connect N.W. 67 Avenue (Ludlam Road) to the Gratigny Expressway and improve the traffic flow in Miami Lakes could commence late next year or in early 2019, according to Mayor Manny Cid. Cid said he attended the county’s Metropolitan Planning Organization’s Fiscal Priorities Committee meeting last week and was able to convince the organization to move the connector plan ahead after putting it on hold for

some time now. “They tabled the issue but after they reviewed it, they changed their minds,” Cid told The Miami Laker. “It was a long process where we worked with state officials.” Cid said Vice Mayor Tony Lama and Councilmember Nelson Rodriguez broached the idea during a Transportation Summit, where county and state officials convened to provide solutions to address the traffic. Cid said once the project is complete, the new Gratigny con-

nectors, along with an additional northbound lane on 67 Avenue at the Palmetto Expressway, would reduce traffic congestion by at least 50 percent. “The project will enhance mobility for the residents of the town of Miami Lakes, City of Hialeah and the entire Northwest Miami-Dade corridor,” Cid said.

“The new connections will improve the distribution of traffic flow in the area.” For years, Miami Lakes officials have been pitching a slew of solutions to solve the traffic problem, and the Transportation Summit offered the best solutions. The proposed Gratigny connector road was the most popular.

Town’s Farmer’s Market features food, flowers, and inspiring stories By Peyton Elias Special to The Miami Laker Miami Lakes Picnic Park West has much more to offer these days with the launch of a new Farmer’s Market taking place every Saturday. Cars fill the parking lots and streets surrounding the park beginning at 9 a.m., right when the market opens. Visitors walk toward the line of tents covering brilliant colors of fresh produce, and the smell of traditional cuisines fill the air. It’s no wonder why the Farmer’s Market has a bustling crowd. The Town has invited 30 or more vendors from all walks of life to share their treasures. Due to popular demand hours have been extended from 1 to 3 p.m. “We still had a lot of foot traffic at 1 p.m. and it is such a big job for vendors to transport and set up. Extending these hours is more profitable and accommodating for them,” said Farmer’s Market manager, Claire Tomlin. Tomlin, owner of The Market Company, has been organizing farmers market events for over 20 years and she has met a variety of amazing people along the way. When the Lincoln Road Partnership Market - where she sold herb vinegars - dissolved in 1995, Claire was asked to recreate the concept. Beginning with one weekly market on Lincoln Road, her farmers markets now span all across South Florida. Tomlin found Miami Lakes

about six years ago when she received a call from the town's Special Events and Committees Coordinator, Clarisell De Cardenas, asking for a small Easter weekend market. That market was extremely well received and the dream of creating a permanent market in the Lakes suddenly seemed like a fast approaching reality. “The Saturday morning exercise classes and activities at Miami Lakes’ gorgeous park provides us with tremendous and consistent support” said Tomlin, referring to the free adult yoga classes hosted by Miami Lakes business, 305 Yoga, that take place every Saturday from 9 to 10 a.m. Though there are people jogging the park's trails and families enjoying the interactive playground all day long, the release of these hungry yogis at 10 a.m. makes it one of the market's busiest hours. There is a wide array of fresh food available at the Farmer’s Market. Assai Blenz serves authentic Korean cuisine and detoxing bubble tea – a sweet frothy drink complete with flavored tapioca balls. Delights like this rare bubble tea and Taste of Rio Inc.’s acai bowls are hard to find in local restaurants so the Miami Lakes Farmer's Market is the closest opportunity to give them a try. People are not the only ones that benefit from the market's nutritious options. Dog Deli:

Canine Kitchen intends to help reduce the effects of allergies and cancer in dogs with chemical-free, great tasting dog food made from the same meat and vegetables enjoyed in restaurants. Jamie, from Gables Delight: Natural Jams, Jellies, and More, is pleased to see “how beautifully the town has progressed,” having grown up in Miami Lakes herself. She is now living in Coral Springs but found out about the Miami Lakes Farmers Market through Instagram. One of many inspiring stories that fill the Farmer's Market is Nicaraguan artist Manuel Rivera Ortega who was born with a quadriplegic disability that inhibits him from using any of his four limbs. At age 7, he began using his mouth to hold and use a paintbrush. He feels “extremely blessed for the God-given talent and privilege to pursue art in this unique way,” he said. Settling in Miami 23 years ago, Manuel is thankful to have met Tomlin who does not charge him for a spot at all of her farmer's markets from the University of Miami to Downtown and beyond. He works mainly for tips and will complete pieces upon request for people that love his work. For a look at his inspiring art visit Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Even on an unassuming Saturday afternoon in the small town of Miami Lakes, stories of hope are found.

Flag retirement ceremony led by Boy Scout Troop 566 Miami Lakes Boy Scout Troop 566 led a flag retirement ceremony for weathered and worn American flags on Saturday, February 11, at the Veteran’s Memorial site located in front of Town Hall. The scouts began the ceremony by reciting the regulations for proper flag disposal as found in the U.S. Flag Code. The Flag Code states that when an American flag is no longer fit for display due to weathering, fading or tattering, it should be disposed of in a dignified manner - the most

common of which is burning. With a proper salute to the American Flag, the Boy Scouts, one by one delicately handed the retired American flags into the fire. Following suit, Girl Scout Troop 247 joined them making several silent trips back and forth until the last flag was placed into the fire. Spectators also took a moment to pay their respects for these worn-out flags and to watch the flames as the flags retired. Troop 566 meets weekly at Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

Council votes to hold public forum on I-75 bridges The Miami Laker staff Following Miami-Dade County Commission’s decision to request an FDOT study over opening up a bridge near Hialeah and possibly doing the same for N.W. 154 Street, Miami Lakes residents voiced concerns about the additional traffic the projects would bring to their neighborhoods. At issue is whether opening up the N.W. 170 Street bridge over I75 would make it more difficult for residents to reach their destinations, especially during peak hours. Most residents say they are stuck in traffic for about 47 minutes and an 1-75 overpass at 170 Street would make it impossible for them to get in and out of the areas. “We’re not trying to keep people out but we are trying to let people in here move around, said

Hilda Hernandez at last week’s Town Council meeting. “We are tired commuters, tired of waiting 20 minutes to get to the Palmetto Expressway from N.W. 82 Avenue. Council members approved legislation to address resident’s concerns including calling a Town Hall meeting to collect feedback, and for town officials to work with the county and Hialeah to ensure Miami Lakes doesn’t bare the brunt of the traffic gridlock. Miami-Dade County Commission Chairman Esteban Bovo Jr., sponsored legislation that calls for a study to open up 170 Street to alleviate traffic congestion for new commercial and residential developments on land west of 1-75 in Hialeah. To mitigate Miami Lakes’ concerns, Bovo added several amend-

ments to his proposal that included for him to file legislation to halt the project if FDOT’s study results in a negative impact, no trucks would be allowed on the bridge, and east bound traffic must turn left or right onto N.W. 87 Avenue instead of cutting through Miami Lakes and PSN. He said opening up the roadway was not part of a solution for the massive traffic gridlock expected to be generated by the Mega Mall, which will be built outside of Miami Lakes near 1-75. “We have to deal with reality, Bovo said at County Commission meeting. But the possibility of opening up Miami Lakes Drive over I-75 in the future exasperates residents even more. Miami Lakes and Hialeah crafted an interlocal agreement in 2007 to keep Miami Lakes Drive closed for the time being. The town’s first mayor, Wayne Slaton, said the agreement was made after Hialeah annexed a huge section of land west of 1-75 to ensure both cities worked together to minimize traffic coming through the town. Hialeah annexed the land in 2003, but it took four years to finalize the interlocal agreement which included approval by both cities and the county’s Department of Community Affairs. “It was the right thing to do

agreement with the light and power giant. The town is estimated to receive more than $2 million per year during the duration of the agreement. • Lawmakers gave their initial approval for an ordinance which would allow certain homeowners with outstanding liens to settle their code enforcement cases for less than the original fines. The ordinance would provide for a process to reduce certain outstanding liens for properties that would have been otherwise eligible to apply for the Lien Amnesty program. In lieu of re-opening the program, council members directed town staff to draft an ordinance allowing lien holders who failed to take advantage of the program, to go to the hearing officer for reevaluation where extraordinary circumstances did occur, but in no event would the maximum reduction exceed 70 percent of the current lien amount. • Lawmakers approved a resolution to waive the competitive bidding process and purchase and install Closed Circuit Television Cameras and adaptive signal control technology on the N.W. 154 Street Corridor to monitor traffic between N.W. 87 Avenue and 77 Court. As part of the Town’s Strategic Plan, based on feedback from a Transportation Summit, the new adaptive signal control technologies will help address traffic in Miami Lakes. Impact and mobility fees from developments would fund the new traffic signal program.

then, and it’s still the right to do,â€? Slaton said at the Town Council meeting. “Everyone has to be on the same page to rescind it and I don’t see that happening.â€? Mayor Manny Cid said FDOT conducted a study to determine the impact of opening up Miami Lakes Drive and the state agency concluded that project wouldn’t do much good. “N.W. 154 Street goes west only to N.W. 97 Avenue and it’s loaded with traffic there already,â€? he said. But Hialeah may not be pushing to open up N.W. 154 Street, according to Councilmember Nelson Rodriguez. He said Hialeah officials were surprised when they learned County Commissioner Jose “Pepeâ€? Resident Claudia Luces said the developers for the land in Hialeah should be responsible for providing infrastructure to alleviate traffic since four new development projects are going there. “They should provide an exit to I-75,â€? she said. “Don’t put the burden on our town.â€? In other Council actions: • Council members gave their initial approval for an ordinance to adopt its own franchise agreement with FPL for 30 years. Mayor Manny Cid utilizes social media to reach residents As part of the Town of Miami Lakes’ campaign for transparency in government, Mayor Manny Cid has added a new social media component called “Miami Lakes Live” which is streamed live on the Town’s Facebook page. “I call this ‘reality politics’ and it is a very exciting new venture,” Cid told The Miami Laker. Several segments have already been streamed live including Cid waking across the closed N.W. 154 Street I-75 overpass to discuss its possible opening, another walking session with other councilmembers previewing the popular Miami Lakes Farmers Market, and a up-close-and-personal tour with the Town’s operations chief Tony Lopez of the soon-to-be completed Optimist Clubhouse. Cid explained the reason to move to social media. “We had been using emails to reach out to the community and it was just not working, we had to reach a larger audience. “Our Facebook page has over 5,000 followers and streaming live has allowed us to expand our reach. For example, we did a ‘Miami Lakes Live’ segment immediately following our March council meeting and we had 1,500 followers watching that video.” Residents can share the Town’s

Miami Lakes launches ‘Where Business Grows’ The Town of Miami Lakes has launched a marketing campaign aimed at attracting new businesses. “Where Business Grows” is the tagline for the campaign which began this month to showcase the benefits of doing business in Miami Lakes.

“We’ve worked hard to cultivate a diverse, business-friendly community over the years,” said Mayor Manny Cid. “Through this campaign, we’re looking to solidify our position as the premiere business address of choice in South Florida.

“This campaign is all about ‘brand awareness’ and taking it to the next level,” Cid said. “Over the past several years, our brand has taken some hits, but with all the great things that are happening now, this will help to improve property values and our value of life.

“The campaign was an initiative of Councilmember Ceasar Mestre and is a public-private partnership between the Town, The Graham Companies and The Easton Group. If the effort proves to have successful value, we will try to budget a similar program for the next budget cycle.” Miami Lakes-based employers including BankUnited, Inktel and Gerardo’s Marketplace are featured as part of the new creative campaign, developed by Coral

Two Miami Lakes teens win 2017 Open Badminton medals By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Miami Lakes teens, Alyssa Moore and Nicole Calles represented Club Shula at the 2017 Open Badminton tournament recently held at the University of Miami. They brought home novice titles for their abilities. The high school sophomores, Moore a student at Barbara Goleman Senior High, and Calles, a student at Archbishop McCarthy High, entered the tournament in Women’s Doubles and defeated other competing high school students, college students, and adults to capture first place in doubles and medals in singles – Moore in first place and Calles in second. Moore is part of her high school’s badminton team and came in second place for the Girl’s Doubles at the Greater Miami Athletic Conference in 2016. Calles participated in her first badminton tournament at the Florida’s Sunshine Golden States where she came in first for Women’s Doubles. “Even though this sport isn’t as popular as many sports in Florida, there is a strong movement building up at the moment and I would love to be a part of that,” said Calles “I have had a great experience with Club Shula’s badminton as

Overall, I wouldn’t trade spending any of my Sundays in any other place than Shula’s.”

Mater Lakes’ Bears wrestling team scores a highest-ever 4th place in state tournament Mater Lakes Academy’s Bears wrestling team competed at the FHSAA state tournament on March 3–4 at the Silver Spurs Arena in Kissimmee. The school congratulated the student athletes who qualified in the highest ranking in the wrestling program. Cole Schwartzberg, junior, in the 220 lb. weight class, and Nestor Nunez, sophomore, in the 152 lb. weight class, both were Region Champions in their respective weight classes in the competition held at Cardinal Gibbons on February 24–25. Both Regional championships were a first for Mater Lakes in Wrestling. Omar Armengol, sophomore, was a regional runner-up and earned the opportunity to wrestle in the state tournament as well. In the state competition, Schwartzberg placed 4th in the 220 lb. weight class, the highest ever in the wrestling program. Schwartzberg had to forfeit the match for third place due to an injury earlier in the tournament. “Unfortunately, I couldn’t wrestle in the third place match, because I know I could have won that match, but I cannot wait for next year. I know I will win!” Nunez, ended the tournament 2-2 in 6th place in the 152 lb. weight class and Armengol finished 1-2 in the 120 lb. weight class. “All three wrestlers will be back next season and we are look-

All three wrestlers that competed will do it again next year and I know we will have more wrestlers in the state tournament and they will make it further,” said David Rovirosa, the school’s athletic director.

American softball star Erika Castroman leads Christmas drive for homeless By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff American High softball star Erika Castroman is not only playing like an All-Dade player this year, but she’s batting a thousand beyond the diamond. Last Christmas, Castroman distributed 50 backpacks filled with items for hygiene, including deodorant, shampoo, soap, toothpaste and hand sanitizers, as well as toothbrushes, combs and face towels to the homeless people who were sleeping in the streets or under the facade of buildings in downtown Miami. Castroman said she encountered the destitute people while visiting her uncle’s house on Christmas Day in 2015 and it broke her heart to see the displaced people lacking the necessity of life and without a roof over their heads. She decided to give the backpacks to the homeless each Christmas, which started last year. This year, she’s hoping to distribute more than 100 backpacks to the homeless. “In October 2016, Erika told us what she wanted to do,” said her parents, Ivette and Alex Castroman, said. “She wanted to do something special for the homeless community. But she didn’t want to give out little goody bags filled with candy, she wanted to give the homeless things they needed and that they could use.” Alex Castroman said in a short period of time, his daughter was

Math Help

able to promote her cause on social media and distributed flyers, asking for donations from family, friends and the business community. Her crusade to aid the homeless was a success. Erika Castroman reached her goal, filling 50 bags, and on Christmas morning, she, her sister, mother, father, and her cousins embarked on their journey to bring the holiday spirit to the homeless. “It was a very humbling experience,” said the Castromans. “To see the people’s faces and expressions of gratitude, saying thank you and Merry Christmas to us which touched our hearts.” “These people didn’t choose to be homeless,” she said. “Sometimes things just get very hard for them in life, and it meant a lot to me to be able to bring some joy to them on a very special day and to let them know people care about them.” She said the owners of Miami

Lakes Sports Shop, Jim and Rosalyn Hamilton, allowed her to use their business for the location of the drop off site for donations, and the Miami Lakes Optimist Club helped her as well.

FIU holds ‘CarFit’ event at Shula’s Athletic Club

FIU’S Occupational Therapy graduate students will be giving CarFit assessments at Shula’s Athletic Club on April 8.

Spanish Lake Elementary students selected to participate in UNICEF Kid Power program The more students move, the more points are earned. That’s the basis of the UNICEF program taking place at Spanish Lake Elementary where students were selected by Scholastic achievement to participate in the Kid Power Program. Each student is given a fitness band from UNICEF which is linked to a tablet in their classroom which tracks steps taken as well as the progress in other schools which have been selected to participate in this program. Additionally, each student is given a UNICEF Kid Power Passport for them to track their travels around the world to places with severely malnourished children. Through their points, a therapeutic packet is unlocked which

By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Florida International University’s Department of Occupational Therapy is partnering with Shula’s Athletic Club for a CarFit event on April 8 from 9 a.m. to noon in the Shula’s Athletic Club parking lot just south of Main Street in Miami Lakes. The event is free and open to the public of all ages but particularly for older drivers to improve the fit of their vehicle for safety and comfort. CarFit is a national program developed by AAA, AARP and the American Occupational Therapy Association. Those leading the event are graduate students from FIU’s occupational therapy department which is a cohort of 54 students, class of 2018.

With physical changes that come with age, it’s important to make adjustments to improve safety, including adjustment to vehicles and the way drivers sit inside them. The students will be making suggestions on how to adjust the seat and mirrors to break poor habits that lead to excessive wear and tear on the body and even injury. Every participant in the event will have a form with a list of recommendations of vehicle adjustments and a gift bag with information on driver safety. Bilingual students will be available to help those who speak only Spanish. To attend the CarFit event, register on site and park vehicles in designated areas for assessment. For more information visit www.car-fit.org.

The 98 students achieved their goal when they met the requirements for the “I-ROCK, I READY incentive program, completing at least 250 minutes of instructional activities with an overall performance of 75 percent or above on a monthly basis. On March 3, the students were rewarded, during a ceremony, with a Certificate of Recognition, movie, soda and popcorn. “The incentive program is in full effect through the end of the school year in an effort to motivate students to complete their i-Ready Math activities, said Omaida Torres, the school’s Mathematics Department chairperson.

Pace’s First Responder/EMT Academy has 12 graduates By Rene D. Basulto Special to The Miami Laker For the past several years, Pace High School has offered its STEM First Responder EMT Academy to its students in conjunction with Barry University. The program is a four-year track designed to help students who want to pursue a job as a paramedic and prepare them for pre-med and medical school. After learning health science in their freshman year and anatomy and physiology in their sophomore year, academy students take Emergency Medical Responder I in their junior year, where they become certified in CPR, first aid, and AED and learn to respond to medical emergencies. For their senior year, academy students are taught by Barry University EMT instructors who also work as firefighters and paramedics. As part of their final year, academy students are considered students of Barry University. They are required to attend clinicals at Cleveland Clinic in Weston, where they work emergency room

rotations and ask patients medical questions. They are also required to have five ride-alongs with the Miami-Dade Ambulance Company and the Coral Gables Fire Department. After passing their final exam and graduating from the academy, students will be able to sit for the EMT certification state exam once they turn 18. “We want to make sure everyone feels prepared to sit for the EMT certification exam after graduation,” said the Lead Teacher Taylor Wilmoth. Senior Starlla Dabady is one of the 12 students in this year’s graduating EMT Academy class. She will be taking the EMT certification state exam once she turns 18 and plans to go medical school to major in pediatrics. “Being in an academy gave me options for jobs that most high school students wouldn’t have,” said First Responder/EMT Academy senior Haley D’Alessandro.

SENIORS from the Pace High School’s First Responder/EMT Academy pose for their class photo. Students who graduate from the academy become eligible to sit for the EMT certification state exam.

M.L. Educational Center’s Emily Norat accepted to Air Force Academy By Jennifer Perez Special to The Miami Laker Getting into the Air Force Academy is no easy feat, for Miami Lakes Educational Center student Emily Norat it took six essays, a physical exam, a fitness test (taken three times), and four interviews over the course of a year. Given the rigorous and long process to apply to the Air Force Academy, one might think this was a lifelong dream for Norat, however, it all began with her older brother’s interest in enlisting. Because of this, her father invited them both to meet his friend who worked in air traffic control. What really sparked her interest was visiting the Colorado Springs Air Force Academy. Witnessing how goal-oriented the students were and how much they value education and integrity convinced Norat to apply. “They have this saying: ‘We will not lie, steal, or cheat, nor tolerate anyone among us who does,’” she said. “You see cheating all the time, but there [in the Air Force Academy] they don’t tolerate it, they’re really strict about it. The knowledge you have should be yours.” She met with Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart, who after

meeting Norat, was willing to nominate and recommend her to the Academy. She had been working on her application since November 2015 and it all paid off when she was called down to principal Loudes Diaz’s office. There, Diaz revealed that she had good news and put the phone on speaker. It was DiazBalart calling to let her know that she had received an appointment into the academy. “I was in shock, I just immediately started crying. Mrs. Diaz was tearing up and she said she was proud of me.” For Norat, being in the military changes everything – as someone who is passionate about the medical field and helping others, it’s important to her to be able to serve people and her country. Though Norat had many doubts during the application process about whether or not she was making the right choice, she feels like there’s always going to be doubt about the things you do. In June, Norat will graduate with honors from MLEC as a certified pharmacy technician, just a few weeks before she has to make her way to Colorado to start training. She will be the first student from MLEC to be accepted into the Air Force Academy – a huge

MLEC principal Lourdes Diaz stands with student Emily Norat who was accepted into the Air Force Academy. honor. Still, she remains humble and has committed herself to getting in shape before she has to go through six weeks of cadet training. After that, it’s a nine year commitment to the Air Force. “I’m not dropping out. I’m mentally preparing myself so that I have the mental strength to overcome any physical obstacles that are in my way,” she said. As for what happens once she’s in the academy, Norat only knows that she wants to work her way up past second lieutenant and eventually work in the medical field.
