Barbara Goleman’s Law Enforcement A look at the economic future and Intelligence Magnet visits the FBI of the Town of Miami Lakes By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Barbara Goleman Senior High School ushered in a one-of-a-kind program at the start of the 20152016 school year, the National Security Intelligence Magnet, also referred to as The Law Enforcement and Intelligence Studies

Magnet. The program, which was designed by the Goleman administration in conjunction with Academy leader and FBI agent, Peter Falcon and former FBI agent, Nelson Barbosa. It is the only school-based program currently affiliated with the Florida

Bureau of Investigation, Miami Division, in Miami-Dade County. As part of the curriculum, Falcon and Barbosa coordinated field trips to the new offices of the FBI Miami Division in Miramar. Students of the program were split into three groups and each group

By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff For Miami Lakes, 2016 will be remembered as a busy and challenging year for the small town with two elections, possible city charter changes, crafting out a laborious budget and fighting the mayor’s lawsuit to reimburse his attorneys who successfully defended him during his federal bribery trial. One of Mayor Michael Pizzi’s lawsuits has been dragging on for a year, straining the town’s spending plan and could put the town’s economic future in peril if the court decides Miami Lakes must pay $2.5 million in legal costs from his 2014 public corruption trial. The mayor’s lawsuits have epitomized the frustration of taxpayers and council members, who reluctantly agreed to settle his reinstatement litigation for about $460,000 to eschew additional legal costs. But they refuse to pay his lawyers nearly $3 million for his action that led to his arrest and

indictment on bribery and kickback charges which include his time as Medley’s town attorney. “This is a tough pill to swallow but I have to put my emotions aside if the attorneys tell you this is the right thing to do,” said Council member and mayoral candidate Ceasar Mestre when lawmakers agreed to settle for the $460,000 during a special meeting in December. Councilmember Nelson Rodriguez, who’s up for reelection in November, echoed similar sentiments. “I am reluctant to vote for it,” he said “But my decision is strictly a cost-saving measure.” Pizzi contended his lawsuits weren’t against the town but to force the issue that Miami Lakes seeks the money from its insurance carrier. His attorneys originally asked for $750,000 for his reinstatement case but settled for the $460,000. “It’s time to stop the bleeding and do the best we can to move forward,” he said during the special

A look at the economic future of Town of Miami Lakes (Continued from Page 1) meeting. Miami Lakes is incurring additional attorney fees’ in its own litigation against its insurance carrier, which refused to reimburse the $460,000 to the town and cover the expenses for Pizzi’s criminal trial. Esther Colon, a Town Council candidate, told council members during a meeting in April that she discovered, through a public records request, Miami Lakes has so far spent about $2 million in attorneys’ fees for fighting the mayor’s reinstatement and criminal lawsuits and the insurance carrier litigation. In the latest round of their legal fight against Pizzi and his lawyers, council members this month approved Town Attorney Raul Gastesi’s request for an additional $100,000 in court costs to prepare for the mayor’s deposition despite an offer for an abatement by the

mayor’s lead attorney, Ed Shohat. At the May 3 regular meeting, Shohat verbally agreed to 3-6 month abatement while the town resumes its legal fight against the insurance company, but Gastesi and lawmakers wanted the accord in writing before deciding not to spend the $100,000 for the upcoming deposition. “We will give you what you need as long as you document you are pressing the insurance company,” Shohat said. Shohat said the mayor’s legal team has been accused of piling up the legal costs for Miami Lakes. “Don’t blame this on the mayor’s legal team, the $100,000 is money you don’t need to spend,” he said. Nevertheless, Gastesi asked lawmakers for the money until the abatement, which he said was previously rejected by Pizzi’s legal team on several occasions, is in writing and signed by all parties

involved in the litigation. “I questioned the timing of the abatement when they knew I was going to ask the council for the money for the mayor’s deposition,” Gastesi said. “Unless we can get an abatement, we must defend ourselves.” The mayor’s pending lawsuit and Miami Lakes’ expenses to fight the litigation and the insurance carrier come at a time when the town is preparing for budget season for the 2016-2017 fiscal year. Last year, Miami Lakes had to scale back on some services after setting aside the $460,000 for Pizzi’s reinstatement lawsuit, which prevented the town from adding two police officers, lacked $20,000 to underwrite the senior adult classes and expenses to operate a full-fledged dog park, Town Manager Alex Rey said last year. Miami Lakes also lacked funding for the Par 3 golf course, which was donated by The Graham

Companies to convert to a passive park, couldn’t increase the budgets for the town’s committees, and no money was budgeted for this year’s Black Olive Tree Removal program. “We couldn’t find the money this year,” Rey said. “But the tree trimming program is at the same level for next year and the tree planting is at a reduced level.” Police services are the town’s biggest expenditure capped at $7.2 million but the amount is expected to increase due to pay hikes and an increase in law enforcement compensation and pension benefits. Public safety has been a top priority for residents, adding more police officers on the streets to keep the crime rate at low. The town is also seeking funding to control the excessive flooding following torrential downpours on commercial and residential properties after Florida Governor Rick Scott vetoed

$400,000 for Miami Lakes’ West Lakes Drainage Improvements project. Pizzi’s corruption trial and his two lawsuits against the town may have led to several critical proposed town charter changes made by the Miami Lakes Charter Revision Commission to shake up the government and change the course of November’s municipal election. On May 17, through a mail-in ballot election, registered voters were asked to bring back a run-off election if any candidate can muster at least 51 percent of the votes, and strip the mayor of his power to pick the town manager and the town attorney and give the responsibility to the entire Town Council with public input. If residents approve the run-off election, it would take effect in November’s municipal election in which 13 candidates are running for mayor and three council seats that are up for grabs.

Goleman students visit with the FBI (Continued from Page 1) visited the field office within the last school year to meet with a number of officials, including George Piro, Special Agent in Charge, known for his work as team leader and lead interrogator of the Saddam Hussein Interrogation Team. “I wanted to provide exposure,” said Falcon. “We took them and several field agents talked to the students about different disciplines like the white collar crime unit, foreign counter intelligence unit and counter terrorism unit.” The students attended lectures with varied discussions such as an active shooter scenario. They were also given the opportunity for lengthy Q and A sessions with officials including Piro, and the students did not disappoint with the quality of questions posited, including pointed concerns over cyber safety, the security of the new building and the emotional toll endured with this line of work. Piro was visibly impressed with the students and congratulated them for their work in the program noting that he expects to see many of them return for careers in the FBI following college degrees. A tour was conducted of specific areas of the building and students were able to wander through the detention center where book-

ing, processing and interrogations take place before inmates are transferred to federal detention centers. Goleman principal Joaquin Hernandez also attended the field trips and looked on with pride as students asked questions and immersed themselves in the possibility of pursuing career opportu-

nities in law enforcement. Falcon, who teaches in the magnet program by day and works in the Miami Field Office in the evening, has a long history of both professions but this is the first time he has able to meld them together. “I wish I had something like this back in high school, so for me this is personal,” said Falcon.

Building moratorium proposal fails on narrow vote By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff Facing a possible lawsuit from a prominent residential development company seeking to build 465 homes Miami Lakes already approved last year, Town council members rejected a proposal to study the pros and cons of placing a moratorium on future building projects. Mayor Michael Pizzi’s proposed legislation would have instructed town staff to conduct a study to determine if a 6 to 9 month abeyance on building projects throughout the town is feasible until the town can fix the current traffic gridlock. The mayor’s proposal narrowly failed with Councilmembers Ceasar Mestre and Manny Cid voting for the study at no cost to the town. Vice Mayor Tim Daubert and Councilmembers Nelson Rodriguez, Tony Lama and Frank Mingo cast the dissenting votes. Before the May 3 regular Town Council meeting, Lennar Homes

for education, dedicating the rights-of-way for the roadway that was opened up three years ago, and traffic improvements to Miami Lakes Drive. The town paid for the traffic upgrade and Lennar Homes reimbursed the town with a $1.8 million check which was part of the development agreement. “Lennar has justifiably relied on the provisions of the development agreement and the existing entitlements to acquire the property and to commence its development, Mayol said. “In addition, Florida law prohibits local governments from applying new laws or ordinances adopted after the effective date of a development agreement to prevent the development of the property subject to the agreement. Pizzi said while Miami Lakes is working with the county and FDOT to resolve the long-running traffic congestion, the Town can study the effects of a moratorium without encroaching on developers’ rights to build on their own properties. “My point is when it comes time to address traffic conditions, we must do what’s best in the public’s interest, he said. Fearing a moratorium could usher in a wave of lawsuits from other landowners, council members narrowly defeated Pizzi’s proposal, especially since he never gave a definitive response on whether Lennar Homes and The Graham Companies would be exempt from his legislation. Mingo questioned the timing of a moratorium and said the

Corporation, which is building the homes on the town’s west side on property the building giant acquired from the Dunn family for $75 million, threatened legal action if the town proceeds with the moratorium. Lennar Homes and The Graham Companies own the largest undeveloped land tracts in Miami Lakes. “We believe that even delaying this particular project would be extremely unwise, said Lennar’s attorney Juan Mayol. “Under the circumstances surrounding the approval of the project, any effort by the town to apply a building moratorium to the Dunnwoody Lake site would not only be highly unfair and inequitable, but it would be prohibited by Florida law. Mayol said it’s unfair for Miami Lakes to place a moratorium on building projects after the town benefited from the terms and conditions of the N.W. 87th Avenue development agreement, including the developer donating $300,000

abeyance for future building projects could spur another layer of lawsuits to add to the town’s litigation against Pizzi, who is seeking $2.5 million in attorney fees from his criminal trial. “Why do we need to do this study other than it’s campaign time,â€? said Mingo, referring to the mayor and several council members who are up for reelection in November. “This will bring another lawsuit from the Grahams and Lennar Homes and they will win.â€? Albeit he supported the study, Cid, who is also running for mayor, said a moratorium won’t solve the traffic plight since the problem is spread throughout Miami-Dade County. “This will not help relieve traffic in Miami Lakes,â€? he said. In other town news: • Council members gave their initial approval for an ordinance to amend the budget for 2015-2016 for an increase in revenues and related expenses from the Dunnwoody Lakes and Downtown development projects, making final adjustments to the carry forward fund balances based on the fiscal year for 2014-2015 audited financial statements, fund the Special Election Mail-in Ballot, recognize the grant to fund the senior class program and revise select line items within departmental budgets that have no impact on the bottom line budget. The proposed budget amendment will increase the town’s fiscal year 2015-2016 budget from $29,799,989 to $37,614,076, which represents an increase of $7.8 million. • Lawmakers gave their initial approval for an ordinance to approve transmittal to appropriate review agencies, to amend the Comprehensive Plan to incorporate the results of the town’s recent transportation planning efforts. The proposed ordinance would

amend the Transportation Element and the Capital Improvements Element of the Comprehensive Plan to incorporate into the town’s Comprehensive Master Plan with the results of the extensive transportation planning efforts by the town in the last few years. The plan includes improving transit and pedestrian mobility, improve distribution of traffic, improve east and west connection and provide mobility alternatives for intra-town trips. • Lawmakers approved a resolution to adopt Councilmember Tony Lama’s proposal to accelerate efforts to resolve the traffic gridlock by requesting that MiamiDade Metropolitan Planning Organization expedite funding for work on the Gratigny and N.W. 67 Avenue. • Lawmakers approved Councilmember Nelson Rodriguez’s proposal for the town’s committees to support R.A.M.P. It Up, a town-wide initiative to help senior citizens in case of an emergency. Town resident Abel Fernandez, the Miami-Dade fire chief of Battalion 14 at Miami Lakes West fire station, created the program, which stands for “rescue-allergies, medications and past medical history. As part of the program, fire rescue personnel have encouraged patients, especially seniors and their families, to have vital medical information written down in case of an emergency, as a “great wayâ€? to transfer information to first responders. The medical information form can be placed by the front door or on the refrigerator with patients’ vital medical information to save time while fire rescue treats patients. Town launches ‘Keep it Clean, Keep it Green’ anti-litter plan As part of the “I Heart Miami Lakes: Take Pride in Your Community” campaign, the Town’s Neighborhood Improvement Committee (NIC) has launched an anti-litter initiative. The new anti-litter signs have been placed on various trash cans in the Town’s parks to encourage residents to “Keep it Clean, Keep it Green.” The campaign was proposed by Councilmember Tony Lama who said, “I’d like to thank the NIC for taking on this initiative. The ‘I Heart Miami Lakes’ campaign aims to motivate residents to help in the effort to keep Miami Lakes growing beautifully.

“To be successful, it will require each and every one of us to take responsibility and do the ‘little things’ that will make a difference in our Town today and for the future,” he added. The NIC is encouraging neighbors, local officials, service clubs, businesses and religious organizations to play a role in fostering strong civic pride. Simple tasks like sweeping sidewalks, picking up trash and encouraging others to keep their neighborhood and homes clean and in good repair will all make a difference. For more information on how to get involved, visit www.miamilakes-fl.gov/iheartml.

Miami Lakes looks to develop 154 Street/I-75 overpass as a public use Mobility Corridor The Town of Miami Lakes is seeking to develop an unused overpass (bridge) into the innovative Miami Lakes Bridge Park and Mobility Corridor, which has been in the works for years. The overpass was built in 1986 to provide east/west connectivity over I-75. However, for nearly three decades, the overpass located on N.W. 154 Street from N.W. 89 Avenue extending over I-75 has remained unused. The Town’s idea is to improve the space by converting the abandoned overpass into a groundbreaking park, revolutionizing the use of gathering space in Miami. The park will include bike lanes, walking paths and greenery.

Miami Lakes was inspired by the High Line, a public park built on a historic freight rail line elevated above the streets on Manhattan’s West Side, and a similar park in Paris. The availability of parks is an important quality-of-life factor. According to town officials and residents, the idea would make the Northwest Miami-Dade area better so that people could convene and connect at an innovative public green gathering space with recreational trails, landscape, and picnic areas to enhance social engagement, community development, and recreational opportunities.

Straightforward Tips For Small Businesses By Michael Huffaker, Franchise Owner Express Employment Professionals The Rise in Independent Labor Some experts call it the flex economy, but it is also known as the gig, online, or on-demand economy, with some even referring to it as the Uberization of work. Whatever name you prefer, this trend represents a significant shift in the labor market, as more workers take on contract and freelance work, rather than traditional employee positions. Some of this shift is fueled by the app-based technology that powers companies like Uber and Airbnb. But even traditional companies are using more contract workers as they seek to save direct labor costs and focus more on their core competencies. What do today’s workers have to say about it? A survey conducted by Express Employment Professionals shows the concept is gaining a lot of interest: • 40 percent said they want to be an independent contractor, but don’t know where to start. • 16 percent are currently taking steps to become an independent contractor. • 14 percent said the independent contractor lifestyle doesn’t appeal to them. • 13 percent don’t want to leave the stability of a full-time job. • 9 percent are currently working as an independent contractor. The Implications for Employers Today’s businesses can expect that this trend will continue to grow. In fact, a Delotte survey found that 42 percent of executives expect to increase the use of contingent workers in the next three to five years. What will tomorrow’s businesses look like? Some experts point to

tech giant Apple as a striking example of what is possible. Apple actually employs fewer than 10 percent of the million-plus workers who make and sell its products, according to a New York Times article. However experts warn that this scale may not be feasible in all industries. In particular, companies must make sure they can keep contract or freelance workers up to speed on the compliance and training that are integral for the business. As far as age, early reports showed Millennials are most likely to embrace the contractor workstyle, because they value jobs that work around their lifestyle, rather than vice versa. However, an Inc. article revealed that Baby Boomers are also cutting the cord from traditional employment. In fact. research has found that about 18 percent of gig on on-demand workers are 55 or older. A Win-Win Scenario Contract workers have been a solid resource for many companies since the 1970s. This work opportunity also offers the flexibility many of today’s workers require. It is a winning solution for Millennials who want to spend more time with their children, for anyone caring for elderly family members or for those enjoying semi-retirement by working on an as needed basis. As the labor market continues to shift in response to this new trend, employers and emplyees will need to decide how they’ll respond. For some employers, moving to a workforce made up of more contract and independent workers will be the answer. Workers will need to consider all their options, weigh the benefits of working in the gig-economy against the drawbacks and decide if pursuing independent work is the answer for their situation.

By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff The second annual Miami Lakes Cars for a Cure was a success, as the classic car show raised more than $10,000 for cancer research for the University of Miami Sylvester Cancer Center. Roberto Alonso Jr. said more people attended the April 10 event on Main Street in comparison to the inaugural showcase in 2015. The event also honored the memory of former Miami Lakes Vice Mayor Roberto Alonso, who had an affinity for classic cars. “This year was a much larger crowd with more food and everyone enjoyed the classic cars on Main Street,” Alonso Jr. said. “The Sylvester Cancer Center was happy about the turnout, it was a nice family event.” He said the event kept alive his dad’s spirit even quipping his father kept the weather “perfect” for the event. “We had some bad weather before the event and everyone was concerned,” he said “I looked up and my dad was around because the weather was perfect. My dad used his name for important causes.” He said his wife is a cancer survivor and thanked the Sylvester Cancer Center for treating her. This year’s event saw more food vendors including Sports

Grill and Geradino’s to serve up some of the great dishes for participants admiring the classic vehicles and a raffle. Alonso thanked the event’s sponsors The Graham Companies, Dolphins Cycling Challenge, the National Honor Society and the Xerox Corporation. He also thanked Bob Graham Education Center’s Junior Society for its fundraising efforts and the Hialeah Miami Lakes High School band, who played at the event. Alonso said all the volunteers, his sister and his mom helped make the event what it is today.

“Without all the volunteers, the show wouldn’t be the success it is,” he said. Alonso said he is already looking forward to next year’s Cars for a Cure event with bigger results. “Next year a more communitybased event creating awareness and bringing in more folks to help raise money and awareness for an important cause,” he said. “It’s real nice to continue to get more people involved with partnerships and fundraising where all of the proceeds go to the Sylvester Cancer Center.”

Girl Scout Silver Award team project benefits Fair Haven Kaitlyn Ruano and Rebecca Segura of Miami Lakes Girl Scout Troop 302 completed their Girl Scout Silver Award on April 30. The girls chose to focus their project on senior citizens residing at the Fair Haven Nursing Home in Miami Springs. Along with the welcome boxes, they also put together a game box with activities for the seniors to

work on in the future. A box of over 350 handmade birthday cards was also included. Ruano and Segura coordinated with the Bob Graham Education Center Spanish Honor Society to assist with the donations of many of the items. The project culminated on April 30 with a “Fair at Fair Haven Day.” The girls, along with their fellow troop members, hosted the event which was attended by over 40 senior citizens. South Florida Youth Symphony concert set May 22 Three young concerto winners, one student composer and an alumni composer – presenting two world premiere pieces – will be the featured performers during a special South Florida Youth Symphony (SFYS) concert at 4 p.m. on May 22 at the Lehman Theatre in Building 5000, Miami Dade College North Campus, 11380 N.W. 27 Avenue. Admission is $10. “This is really a remarkable event and promises to be an exceptional day of music,” said Marjorie Hahn, the SFYS musical and executive director. “The fact that these youngsters – and the majority of our students – come from low income neighborhoods, and school districts have all but eliminated instrumental music programs, shows the dedication of these talented musicians. Many are on

scholarship with our programs and are using borrowed instruments. Yet, their love of music prevails.” At the May 22 concert, Grace Bush (18), and her brother Benjamin (13), from a family of 10 children in West Park, Florida, both won spots on the concerto concert. Grace Bush will perform the Flute Andante by Mozart, and Benjamin Bush will perform the first movement of the Elgar Cello Concerto. Liam Idrovo (16) of Hialeah will perform the 1st movement of the Mozart Piano Concerto no. 21, while South Dade’s Yosvani Rodriguez (15) has composed his own music and will premiere and conduct part of his String Serenade. In a special highlight, a former SFYS teacher, Nicholas Repetto,

who left South Florida to begin his composition career in California, has written two compositions for the SFYS ensembles which will have world premieres during the REPETTO concert. Now in her 45th year as a SFYS conductor and teacher in the organization founded by her stepfather, Maestro Carmen Nappo, Hahn has overseen tremendous expansion of the symphony. Under her guidance, the group, which boasts one of the finest musical faculties in Miami-Dade and Broward counties, has grown to three orchestra programs with

HML junior Marina Cepeda wins DECA VP spot By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Marina Cepeda, Hialeah Miami Lakes Senior High junior, was selected as one of the four vice presidents for the Florida DECA organization for 2016-2017. Before joining DECA, Cepeda had considered doing something STEM related, but at the urging of entrepreneurship teacher, Ted Dinicola, she joined the organization her freshman year and soon after qualified for state competitions. She hasn’t stopped pushing forward ever since. When the opportunity came to run for one of the Florida DECA vice president positions, Cepeda jumped at the chance while holding the role for vice president in her school chapter. Cepeda beat out seven other students for the position, a feat for the underdog school that is among one of the smaller chapters in the district. Cepeda is the second vice president in the organization’s history to represent Miami-Dade County and the first from HML. She is

now one of the six faces that grace the front page of the Florida DECA website. “A majority of the other students running came from Broward where the chapters are more established, have more members, and have more money,” said Cepeda. “So I was an unfamiliar face and had to really push my campaign forward to be noticed. I wanted to run for VP because I knew I could make DECA better and give back to a club that has given me so much.” Cepeda began campaigning alongside two campaign managers, Emily Alayeto and Victoria Estopinan. Cepeda summarized her goals to improve DECA under her leadership for VP down to one sentence: “I want to increase membership involvement.” Her plans to make this goal come to fruition include team training drills and networking, such as District-wide picnics and barbecues for members to connect with one another and enhance communication across chapters, increasing study resources, a monthly

emailed newsletter and a DECA member of the month. Cepeda decided on soccer for her campaign theme to make these goals accessible to members. “I’ve been on the soccer team since sophomore year, I play defense,” said Cepeda. “I realized, actually on my way to practice, that soccer is all about communication and my main point in the campaign was communication. I also wanted to make sure the theme was genuine and was not some facade about being a business professional. I wanted it to be honest and for people to know that DECA, like soccer, is about teamwork. All the players in soccer have to work together and coordinate because you can’t win a game by yourself.” “I couldn’t have done this without Mr. Dinicola, Emily, and Victoria, they pushed me and motivated me through the times we hit roadblocks with fundraising,” said Cepeda. “There were a lot of things to overcome but they helped me through it all.” Since Cepeda was running from a Miami-Dade County school, she and her campaign managers had to abide by a number of regulations and strict policies for fundraising that the other candidates, who hail from Broward County, did not. Estopinan handled finances and Alayeto designed graphics. Together under Cepeda’s leadership they planned, managed, financed and produced campaign strategies and props such as buttons, frisbees, banners and flyers, to hand out at the conference. After campaigning ended, voting delegates congregated in dif-

ferent rooms where Cepeda and the other candidates rotated every five minutes to answer questions. At 6 p.m. the delegates cast their votes and the winners were announced the following morning at the closing ceremonies. “When they announced my name as vice president I started crying,” said Cepeda. “I put so much work into this and sacrificed so much. Since we are the underdogs from a smaller chapter we felt the pressure to over campaign. I was ecstatic when I saw Mr. Dinicola dancing and jumping up and down, and our chapter, about 30 people taking up the first two rows, all stood up and started chanting my name as I walked up the stage. It was the best moment of my life.”

Registration and a $20 after 9-3 regional final victory Advisory Board will once again place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at deposit (cashier’s check or money By Ashley Rey Special to The Miami Laker Pace High’s varsity baseball team came alive during the Region 4-5A Tournament, beating Pompano Beach High School 9-3 in the finals on May 10. The regional tournament started off with an intense game against Key West High School on April 27. The Spartans threw their ace, senior Christopher Rodriguez, who pitched the entire game and threw 15 strikeouts. Senior Jonathan Ledesma hitting a single, followed by pinch runner Nicolas San Marty stealing second base, set up Jonathan Reyes Diaz and Bryan Diaz to hit consecutive doubles to win the game 2-1. The Spartans faced Gulliver Prep in the regional semifinals on May 3 in what proved to be a close game. Rodriguez put on another great performance by allowing only 2 runs. The Spartan offense

roared back late in the game for a come-from-behind 4-2 victory to advance to the regional finals. The regional championship against Pompano Beach was perhaps the most exciting game of the tournament. Junior Manuel Rodriguez closed for Christopher Rodriguez, who started his third straight game and threw 12 strikeouts. A tricky steal of home plate by senior Jonathan Reyes Diaz and home runs by juniors Bryan Diaz and Anthony Sanabria lead the Spartans to a 9-3 win and a raucous celebration by the Spartans. The Spartans will face Bishop Moore High School in the state semifinals on May 18 at JetBlue Park in Fort Myers. A win there will mean a trip to the state championships the following night. Pace is seeking its seventh state baseball championship, the last came in 2006.

Pace High Drama closes out stellar year of awards, sold out performances

CRISTINA PLA-GUZMAN, lead teacher of Monsignor Edward Pace High School’s Academy of Visual and Performing Arts Theatre Program, and her International Thespian Honor Society students, pose for a photo with Miami Lakes councilmembers after being recognized by the Town Council on May 3.

By Rene D. Basulto Special to The Miami Laker Pace High School’s Academy of Visual & Performing Arts Theatre Program and Drama Club finished out another excellent award-winning year with its spring musical production of Chicago on April 20 through 22. In addition to their regular evening shows, Pace Drama students held special morning performances of Chicago on April 20 and 21 for over 500 middle school students from Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic School, St. John the Apostle Catholic School, St. Bartholomew, St. Patrick, Holy Cross, and St. Mary Cathedral School. A record 1,009 people came out to see the public evening performances, including a sold-out crowd

of 450 on April 22 for the 12 Pace Drama seniors’ final night on stage. During their final curtain call, Cristina Pla-Guzman, lead teacher for the Theatre Program, presented each senior with a rose and highlighted the universities they had been accepted to and the over $100,000 in scholarships they had received. The seniors responded in kind for their teacher, reminiscing on their years in the program and even singing a song written about her to the tune of “Without Love” from Hairspray, their 2015 spring musical. Even after the final performance, the accolades continued to roll in for the Drama program. PlaGuzman and the International Thespian Honor Society students

were honored and recognized for their successes by the Miami Lakes Town Council at a May 3 council meeting. The meeting was a mini-Pace alumni reunion as PlaGuzman, a Class of 2002 alumna, met with Miami Lakes Councilmembers Manny Cid (Class of 2002), Tony Lama (Class of 1996), and Nelson Rodriguez (Class of 1987). After winning 2016 Kennedy Center/Stephen Sondheim Inspirational Teacher Award, PlaGuzman won yet another national award with the 2016 Top-Notch Teacher award at the inaugural Varsity Brands School Spirit Awards ceremony. The award is given out to teachers who help students fulfill their passion and their potential while showcasing a deep love for them and their school.

Edward Lantz, Mater Academy’s AP English Language teacher, said he is proud to see that all of his students’ hard work and dedication paid off as they were accepted into “such great” universities. Yesenia Aspuro was another student at the Signing Celebration that has excelled throughout her academic career. She will be graduating high school with her Associate’s Degree from MDC and go on to major in pre-med. Her studious habits have allowed her to an AP Scholar and earn a fully paid college tuition at Nova, where she will be living on campus for free. Assistant principal Maria Mitrani said, “Watching our students graduate, seeing them get accepted to phenomenal schools, celebrating their success, this is why I do my job. It is the most rewarding thing. I am so proud of them. We extend or sincerest congratulations to all of our top scholars and wish them the best of luck with their plans for the future.”

As a middle and high-school student, Taylor would sit in Florida International University and Miami-Dade College courses and absorb the knowledge without actually being enrolled in the college classes. His intellect and dedication to his studies has been demonstrated with all of his academic accomplishments. They included being Mater Academy’s first student to attend Harvard, first to be a National Merit Finalist, third National AP Scholar and accepted into 16 schools, including UPenn, Columbia, Dartmouth, Cornell, MIT, Stanford and Vanderbilt. Another student that stood out was Rigel Prieto, who is planning to major in electric engineering following his high school graduation. In addition to his high school diploma, Prieto will graduate with his Associate’s Degree from Miami-Dade College. He is recorded in the top ten percent of his graduating class for 2016, a Silver Knight nominee and an FIU Ambassador Scholarship recipient. In addition, Jennifer Blanco is one of the school’s MDC graduates who will go on to FIU to study marketing and advertising in the fall and is a proud recipient of the Burger King Scholar Award.

By Sheila Lopez and Elena Delgado Special to The Miami Laker Every February, senior athletes get excited for one reason – they are finally eligible to sign their Letter of Intent to their desired college or university. An athletic signing celebrates all the hard work that the studentathlete has demonstrated throughout the years. Likewise, Mater Academy hosted its very first Academic Signing in school history on April 19 to celebrate the accomplishments of the school’s top senior scholars. Among the accomplishments, students were receiving multiple scholarships, getting accepted into Ivy League schools and graduating in the top ten percent of their class. The event was hosted by the school’s CAP advisor Silvina Macho, who provided students and teachers with food, with the help of the cafeteria staff, and the opportunity to take a Polaroid picture as they signed their Letter of Intent. A variety of students were celebrated in the event, including one of the most distinguishable scholars – Derek Taylor, the 2016 class Valedictorian who is known by all of his classmates to have exceeded beyond the imaginable.

Three Pace High School senior student athletes sign letters of intent By Rene D. Basulto Special to The Miami Laker Pace Senior High School celebrated the success of three student athletes as wrestler Alexander Perez signed a Letter of Intent with Missouri Baptist University while basketball star Destiny Wilson and tennis star Josvany Lesende signed Letters of Intent with St. Thomas University at a ceremony held on April 27. The trio signed their scholarships for their respective universities in front of their families, the Pace student body, and Pace administration. Perez, who signed with Missouri Baptist University, won the 2016 1A 138lb State Wrestling Championship earlier this year, pinning all of his opponents at states in under two minutes combined. Wilson, who signed a basketball scholarship with St. Thomas University, is a standout girls basketball and flag football player, helping both of her teams reach regional competitions several times during her years at Pace. Lesende is one of Pace’s star tennis players and was named Honorable Mention in the 2015 All-Dade tennis team.

Miami Lakes K-8 Center students participate in Miami Dade’s Honors Music Festival The Superintendent's Honors Orchestra is a part of the MiamiDade County Honors Music Festival that students from MiamiDade County Public Schools audition to be a part of at either the elementary or secondary level in orchestra, band, and choir. Miami Lakes K-8 Center students Ariana Rejas and Francis Dalipe, both eighth graders, auditioned for the first time and were selected to perform as part of an elite group of string players. Rejas

has been playing violin since the beginning of seventh grade and Francis is in his first year of orchestra playing cello. Rejas is also an accomplished pianist for her age and plays guitar. Francis also plays guitar and ukulele. The concert took place Saturday April 30 at 7:30 p.m. at the Wertheim Performing Arts Center at FIU’s Modesto Maidique Campus, 10910 SW 17 Street in Miami,

By Rene D. Basulto Special to The Miami Laker Pace High School senior Gabriela Gutierrez Perez may be most well-known among her peers for playing the violin, as she has in several on-stage performances and Open Mic Nights. However, it is her prowess with the harp that has led to her being accepted to three prestigious undergraduate institutes –the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University, the University of Miami, and the University of Michigan. All institutions have offered her scholarships with amounts of up to $40,000.00 per year. Gutierrez Perez, who started playing the violin at age 6, took up the harp at age 12 and also plays the clarinet and piano. “I thought [the harp] was a cool instrument and I already had a background with the violin,” said Gutierrez-

Perez. “She’s been playing with the South Florida Youth Orchestra for seven years and she composes her own music,” said Ross Goldman, lead teacher for Pace’s Academy of Visual & Performing Arts Music Program. Gutierrez Perez credits Goldman and Pace for exposing her to more styles of music, which diversified and strengthened her background in classical music. She also says that Goldman helped her greatly with how to market herself and pursue a career in music. She added that while she doesn’t see a lot of people playing the harp, it has given her more opportunities for jobs and there is a higher demand for harpists. “The harp is not just a beautiful instrument, it’s actually a work of engineering,” she said. “I really hope to give the harp a lot more use and I really want to bring it back.” Gutierrez Perez says that while

GUTIERREZ-PEREZ she hasn’t decided on where she is headed, she does plan on applying as a double major in music and astronomy.
