Jose Bueno named M-Dade Schools’ top principal By Roselind Romero The Miami Laker staff Miami-Dade County Public Schools honored winners and runner-ups for District Principal and Assistant Principal of the Year. The awards ceremony, sponsored by Dade Association of School Administrators (D.A.S.A.), was held in late March at Jungle Island. Jose Bueno, who serves as principal of Hialeah Miami Lakes Senior High School (HML), won top honors as the District's Principal of the Year. Bueno, a Miami Lakes resident and a product of Miami-Dade County Public Schools, has served as both a teacher and school administrator in different schools since 1993. He taught geography, social studies, and civics prior to becoming an assistant principal at Citrus Grove Middle School. By 2003 he had become principal of Jose Marti Middle School.

Theatre Review:

Secrets of the La Croix at the Main St. Playhouse By Roselind Romero The Miami Laker staff The only disappointment in David Michael Sirois' play Secrets of the La Croix is the wasted cranberry sauce that litters the floor in a Thanksgiving food fight amid unraveling secrets and sibling rivalry. Secrets of the La Croix, which runs through May 18 at the Main Street Playouse, perfectly portrays the tension and dysfunction of families during the holiday season, and every other season between.

Playwright and director, Sirois first penned Secrets of the La Croix while in college over the course of three days. Many of his characters are directly inspired by his own family. “It's funny, I had some of my family read the character parts and say “this isn't us’,” said Sirois. Roger La Croix, played by the talented Ben Sandomir, is intent on two things – getting his television to work and keeping his secret under wraps. Sandomir acts as the glaring contrast to his on-stage

wife Theresa, played by Jordan Mauro. Erica Mendez portrays the La Croix's unseen daughter Amber, Dylan Baierlein plays the youngest son, Brad, and the golden child of the La Croix family, Kevin, is played by Kristian Bikic. Fern Katz brings vitality to her role as Claire, the know-it-all grandmother and together, all six members of the La Croix family seem to be competing for title of “most deranged.” Added to the volatile La Croix mix are neighbors Mickey and Kristen, played by Murphy Hayes and Ashley Chang, and Kevin's college friend Jeffrey, played by Michael Uribe. The charisma of the characters

shine through even the most illtempered of them, and while each holds their own secrets and personalities, the dialogue moves in a fluid yet unrehearsed way. The back-and-forth between characters incites familiar laughter within the audience, the honest and comedic portrayal quickly calling to mind the quirks and shortcomings of one's own family. “You breathe easy when people like these actors come in and just kill it,” said Sirois. “As a writer, once you're done writing you have to let it go into the hands of the actors and trust their instinct. The actors take it to a whole new level.” While the audience is strung along, eager to finally learn of the

pivotal secrets of the La Croix family, perhaps it's the unexpected secrets that are most pivotal to the climax of the play and most enjoyable to witness. The mysteries of the missing remotes, the seductive next-door neighbor, a wild trip to Florida and concealed SAT scores are all revealed, but not until dinner is served. Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 PM and Sundays at 2:00 PM. Tickets are $25 for adults, $20 for seniors (62+), and $18 for students (with current ID) and can be purchased online or at the door. M. L. Chamber welcomes Com. Esteban Bovo Jr. By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff Miami-Dade County Commissioner Esteban L. Bovo Jr. is the guest speaker for the Miami Lakes Chamber of Commerce membership luncheon, where he will discuss events and programs for District 13 residents and business owners and the state of the county, as Miami-Dade is preparing to balance a difficult budget for the next fiscal year. The event is scheduled for 11:30 a.m., Wednesday, May 7, at Don Shula’s Hotel. County Mayor Carlos Gimenez was the guest speaker at last month’s Chamber of Commerce event, indicating the private sector helped Miami-Dade complete a pipeline of infrastructure projects and is seeking to extend the partnership for next year to help save taxpayers money. Despite a conceivable budget crisis, Gimenez said his intention is to hold the line for property taxes for the budget while maintaining services for two million residents. Next week, Bovo will give his

take on the financial condition of Miami-Dade and the direction of the county for next year. In 2011, Bovo was elected to the County Commission during a special election to represent District 13, which includes the cities of Hialeah and Miami Lakes, and neighboring unincorporated areas including Palm Springs North and Lakes on the Green. His political career started in 1998, when he was appointed to the Hialeah City Council and sponsored the anti-predator legislation. Following his second term in office, Bovo was selected as president of the City Council before he decided to run for higher office. In 2008, Bovo was elected as State Representative for District 110 and was re-elected without opposition in 2010. During his tenure in the Florida Legislature, Bovo was an outspoken advocate for the historic Hialeah Park and worked diligently towards its reopening. Bovo continued to push his legislative agenda on the betterment and safety of local communities by

sponsoring the Ashley Nicole Valdes Act, which requires defendants who have been arrested for leaving the scene of a fatal accident to be held in custody until a judge ruling. Due to his tenacity and dedication to public service, his colleagues in the Florida Legislature nominated him as chairman of the Hispanic Legislative Caucus and was subsequently chosen to chair the Committee of Business Regulation in Tallahassee. Bovo currently serves as chairman of the Finance Committee, vice chair of the Public Safety and Animal Services Committee, and is a member of the Transportation and Aviation Committee for Miami-Dade County. As a County Commissioner, Bovo maintains an open-door policy and continues his commitment to improving the quality of life in Miami-Dade County. Bovo was born in 1962 in Queens, New York, to Marilyn and Esteban Bovo-Carás. As a member of the 2506 Brigade, Bovo’s father instilled in his son the value of fighting for justice while his moth-

Nutri-Force’s Anthony Alfonso receives 2014 Top Minority Business honor from Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce Anthony Alfonso, president and CEO of Nutri-Force Nutrition, has received the 2014 Top Minority Business Award in the Executive of the Year category from the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce. The Miami Lakesbased business is a cGMP leader in the contract manufacturing, private labeling and branding of nutraceuticals, vitamins, and nutritional supplements. “It is an honor to be named Executive of the Year and be recognized among so many other minorities each with their own unique entrepreneurial success stories,” said Alfonso. “I am also grateful to lead a group of outstanding employees who share my passion and are equally committed to innovation and customer service. On a daily basis, they are my inspiration.” Alfonso is known for having a high degree of passion, desire, determination, discipline and dedication. With annual revenue of $83 million in 2013, Alfonso and his senior management team are credited with leading Nutri-Force Nutrition to explosive growth in the last three years. Alfonso is especially proud of Nutri-Force’s new $13 million, 40,000 square foot state-of-the-art softgel vitamin plant in Miami Lakes – a project that skeptics told him could not be built in Florida due to the state’s high humidity in combination with the sensitivity of the technology the plant would

require. Lastly, Alfonso volunteers his time mentoring youth in the community and the company contributes to many charitable causes including the donation of vitamins to needy organizations. For additional information, visit www.nutriforce.com.

Bovo has been a resident of Miami-Dade County for over 45 years and holds a Bachelor's degree in Political Science from Florida International University. News and Notes from the Town of Miami Lakes Community Emergency Response Team Council to view video public training draws enthusiastic participants comments at May 13 meeting When citizens know how to respond to emergencies as a team, they help make their community a safer place; and for this purpose, Community Emergency Response Teams (CERTs) were formed. Over a few days in April, the Town of Miami Lakes and its Public Safety Committee hosted CERT training at Town Hall. Mayor Wayne Slaton, Vice Mayor Manny Cid, Councilmem-

ber Nelson Rodriguez, members of the Public Safety Committee, and Town staff were among the participants. During the training, attendees practiced skills in first aid, light search and rescue, emergency decision-making procedures, fire suppression, triage, community preparedness, hazard mitigation, damage assessments, and more. “It was an excellent learning

opportunity to be part of this CERT class and be among a group of individuals that are committed to emergency response and preparedness,” said Slaton. “Everyone enjoyed all of the valuable skills and training that we received and I encourage our residents to volunteer for these types of training courses when they become available.”

in history-making initiative The Town of Miami Lakes is making history by being the first municipality in Miami-Dade County, and possibly the state or nation, to welcome video submissions for remote public comments that will be viewed during Town Council meetings. Those who are not able to attend the meetings can either email their video from their phone to the Town Clerk, or unload a video to YouTube on the item they wish to speak about for the Mayor and Councilmembers to hear during the Public Comment portion of the Council meeting. This new option is another tool the Town is using to extend citizen engagement and outreach. Offering remote public participation is beneficial for those individuals who do not have the time, transportation, or inclination to attend a regular Town Council meeting. “This is the first step in achieving our long-term goal of live realtime remote public comments,” said Vice Mayor Manny Cid. “The Miami Lakes Town Council is once again leading Miami-Dade County in government accessibili-

ty. Initiatives like these will fundamentally transform municipal governance.” The public comment videos are limited to 3 minutes, the same time allotted for speakers at the meetings. The Town of Miami Lakes wants to make remote public comment easy and is offering a variety of ways to unload videos. Participants can email their video directly to clerk@miamilakes-fl.gov from their phone. If the file exceeds 10MB, it will be too large to email, so participants can upload their video to YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/upload) and then send the link to the Town Clerk. Additionally, interested persons can utilize a cloud service such as DropBox to share their video. Participants need to register with the Town Clerk by completing and submitting the registration form which must be received during the timeframe (Wednesday before the meeting date through Monday before the meeting date.) The Council meets the second Tuesday of the month, except in August.

Reading coach Raquel Hernandez named MLEC’s Teacher of the Year By Roselind Romero The Miami Laker staff “Teaching is my calling,” said Miami Lakes Educational Center's Teacher of the Year, Raquel Hernandez. “My mother often mentions that as a little girl I would play with my dolls and teach them what I had learned in school. What I find most fulfilling about my job is the fact that for me it is not work at all. Confucius said, ‘Find a job you love and you will never work a day in your life’.” Hernandez obtained her bachelor's degree from Barry University and a master's degree from the University of Miami, both in the field of education. She taught third, fourth and fifth grade at Hialeah Gardens Elementary School for 10 years and transferred to Barbara Goleman Senior High School as a reading coach. Ultimately she took the opportunity to work at Miami Lakes Educational Center first as a reading coach and currently as an Intensive Reading Instructor for grades 9 through 12. Hernandez, who believes that the classroom environment needs to be a healthy foundation for students to grow, sees the potential in each of her students to create a world better than the one that came before them. “I view my students as living monuments that transcend time. In each student I see the next scientist, engineer, doctor, lawyer, and teacher. My role as a teacher is to promote a positive classroom experience, one which fosters a highly motivational approach where learning always takes place,” said Hernandez. As reading coach, Hernandez frequently advocates the creed that all children have the potential to experience success. She offers support and resources to col-

colleges surrounding the research triangle in North Carolina, or Princeton University’s contribution to the high tech corridor in South Jersey,” Marino added. “Our vision is to create the same opportunities for the businesses that are both located in Miami Lakes and/or considering relocating here. Geographically, we are situated in close proximity to a number of institutions of higher learning which we feel can provide tremendous benefit and assistance to the businesses in our town. In addition to Marino, subcommittee members include Neill Robinson, Lorenzo Cobiella and Magaly Rubio. For more information, contact Marino at 305-5577550, or by email at pmarino@devry.edu.

Miami Lakes Economic Development Committee seeks collegiate collaboration The Town of Miami Lakes Economic Development Committee has created a subcommittee headed by Professor Paul A. Marino, a longtime Miami Lakes resident, and professor of entrepreneurship at DeVry University in Miramar, to develop relationships between the various universities in the area to benefit both the current and prospective businesses in the Miami Lakes area. Commenting on the initiative, Marino said, “If you examine business areas around the country, the more successful ones are centered around a university hub where collaboration can take place. “This is true of Silicon Valley, which owes its success partially on the presence of Stanford University. Miami-Dade Parks Summer Camp ‘Fit2Play’registration now underway Registration is now open for Miami-Dade County Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department’s 2014 “Fit2Play” summer camps. Managed by recreation professionals and conveniently located at 31 parks throughout the county from June 9 through August 15, camps will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, and offer 7:30 a.m. early drop-off and 6 p.m. late pick-up options. At $40 to $90 per week, the General Camps are for children ages 6 to 14. Financial assistance and scholarships are available to those who qualify. General Camps are fully supervised while children enjoy a full recreational schedule with fitness activities, sports, arts and crafts, nature encounters, quiet games and field trips. Miami-Dade Parks has teamed up with partner sponsors, the University of Miami Health System (UHealth), the UM Miller School of Medicine, and The Children’s Trust, to provide the “Fit2Play” program. Children will learn the fundamentals of living a healthy lifestyle through nutrition,

fitness and exercise, as well as safety and prevention. In addition, children will learn about the health benefits of “going green” as they discover that a healthy planet is essential for a healthy life by learning the basics of recycling, water conservation and other eco-friendly behaviors. Each day’s session also includes Sports, Play and Active Recreation for Kids (SPARK) activities. SPARK, an evidencebased, outcome-oriented active recreation component of the “Fit2Play” program, is designed to develop and improve motor skills, movement knowledge, and social and personal skills. With parental permission, Miami-Dade Parks will track and measure key health indicators in participants, including blood pressure and Body Mass Index (BMI), assisting parents and children to make informed decisions about their fitness and nutrition needs. Most of the camps offer rolling registration so parents can enroll their child for one week or for several weeks at any time throughout the summer, but they

must register at least one week prior to the desired start date, in some cases. In the Miami Lakes and northwest Miami-Dade area, a “Fit2Play” camp program will be offered by Country Village Park, 6550 N.W. 188 Terrace. For information and registration, call 305622-2594. Registration is also available online at http://bit.ly/ fit2play14. Learn-to-Swim Program: Miami-Dade Parks’ Learn-toSwim classes are taught by certified American Red Cross Water Safety instructors and include class levels of Parent and Tot (ages 2-5), levels 1-6 (ages 6-18, and adults. In the Miami Lakes area, Learn-to-Swim classes will be offered at the Palm Springs North Pool, 7901 N.W. 176 Street. For information, call 305-558-3762. Junior Golf Camp: A Junior Golf Camp will be offered by the Country Club of Miami from June 9 through August 15 for ages 8 to 15 under the direction of resident instructor and PGA professional Larry Levow. Camp is held Monday to Friday with full-day sessions from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and half-day sessions from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Cost is $225 per week for full-day and $175 per week for half-day sessions which include instructor, golf clubs, practice balls, and short course play. Oh, no! My kids want to be rich, what do I do? By Max Sanchez Special to The Miami Laker “We want to be rich! We want to be rich! We want to be rich!” Imagine listening to that for over 24 hours straight! Let me tell you what happened to me a few months ago, after watching Richie Rich with Macaulay Culkin (oldie but goodie). My 4 and 6 year-olds decided they wanted to live like Richie Rich. All the regular clichés came to mind: “Money doesn't grow on trees,” and “Money is the root of all evil.” Even as a child, I remember my father telling me money was dirty and we shouldn't touch it. What effect could those things have on our kids’ psychology about money? As a finance professional for over 12 years, I was truly puzzled on how to begin to teach them the importance on how money works. As parents, we understand the importance of literacy. We sit for hours reading with our children. However, children must be “literate” about money matters, too. I think parents need to start teaching kids about the importance of money at an early age, why wait? We all want to raise kids who are happy and successful, but we often mistakenly think that money is the key. In fact, the amount of money parents possess has little to do with how children turn out. On the other hand, the attitudes and actions of parents around money issues will have a tremendous effect on kids. Parents that exhibit healthy money behaviors and communicate strong values to their children will raise children with similar ethics. When parents talk openly and constructively about financial issues and help the disadvantaged, children learn lessons about respect, love and giving.

Our Lady of the Lakes hosts annual social on May 17 Our Lady of the Lakes Church and School are inviting the community to join in the 16th Annual Social to be held on Saturday, May 17, at the Signature Grand, 6900 State Road 84, in Davie. This year's theme is the classic "Havana Nights." The social begins at 7 p.m. with a cocktail reception and silent auction, followed by dinner and dancing to the sounds of D.J. Ariel at 8 p.m. Guests are encouraged to dress to impress in cocktail dresses and guayaberas. Proceeds from the event will benefit the school's "Lend-aHand" Scholarship program. The cost is $95 per person and attendees are named “Guardian of ‘Lend-a-Hand’ Sponsorship.” To reserve call Nancy Lagroue at 954-815-8474 or email lagrouen@bellsouth.net. Seats are limited.

Parents that exhibit “bad” money behaviors can inadvertently distort the values parents want to communicate. Repeated fights about money, living paycheck to paycheck, or becoming workaholics will convey that money is a negative thing, or isn't worth having, or that making money is more important than having meaningful family time. So my quest began in turning basic financial concepts into a simple but fun way to engage kids on money matters. My goal is to teach our children how to live within their means, free from the anxieties of debt, and secure in their future. I started using a three piggy bank concept with my kids. Each piggy bank is clearly

labeled. There is: Charity, Save (invest), and Spending. The idea is to have them split all the money they receive into three different piggy banks equally. Do you have to purchase three piggy banks? Well, you can but you can also start out this adventure with containers as simple as plastic Ziploc bags. Banks that are transparent are more fun for children. They can watch their money grow! The "Charity Piggy" is designed to teach them the importance of giving back. To be able to help others, in and of itself is a blessing. It helps create a rich heart and makes them aware that in life we all have a purpose and helping our community is everyone's responsibility.

The "Save (invest) Piggy" is designed to teach the differences between wants and needs and avoid the trap of instant gratification. Our society pushes us to be up to date with the newest toys, DVDs, clothes, and onward. I want to show them how to plan and budget and see how money can grow if used properly. Learning to wait for what you want is a hard lesson at any age, but one that will keep your kids out of future debt. The investing part of saving is for kids a little older (10 years or older). I would begin teaching the concept "compound interest" by rewarding them every week or month with “interest” for not taking money out from their piggy bank. The "Spend Piggy" is designed to help them understand how budgeting can be liberating. As they purchase things, I take advantage by showing them the differ-

ence in value vs. price. The idea of these three piggy banks is the stepping stone in teaching your child how to be rich and how that it is as important as having a rich life. This is a simple but fun way to open the lines of communication with your kids and can help you raise a financially literate adult. The importance of educating our kids how money truly works is vital to their future now more than ever! If you’re a parent or remember how your parents taught you about money, share with us, we will love to read about it. Send an email to maxxsanchez@hotmail.com or find us on Twitter with the handle @teamsanchezrvp. (Max and his wife Karen have been longtime residents of the Miami Lakes community and often frequent Einstein Bagels on early mornings with The Miami Laker newspaper in hand.)

MAX SANCHEZ and his wife Karen are local financial professionals who are eager to increase financial literacy for families, including their own children, Maxx and Kristen.

Yoga Gangsters is an organization whose mission is “to empower youth by addressing the symptoms of trauma and poverty such as limited education, addiction, violence, incarceration, physical and mental disabilities, teen pregnancy, HIV, and more using the practice of yoga.” Cooper and her instructors teach self-awareness, self-respect, and self-control through yoga. Yoga Gangsters first began as a labor of love in Cooper's living room in 2003 until 2008 when she began training others to work alongside her. In 2011 Yoga Gangsters became an official nonprofit. On founding the non-profit Cooper said, “I myself had a challenging childhood and early adolescence full of trauma that led me to depression, anger and selfdestruction. Yoga really saved my life by providing a healthy way for me to heal from my past and recognize potential in my future. I knew as soon as I found the practice that I wanted to share it with other people who were suffering as I had been.” Based in South Florida, Yoga Gangsters has been serving Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties for more than 10 years working in inner city schools, detention centers, rehab facilities, and within the foster care system. After offering training sessions across the country for instructors Yoga Gangsters has spanned across 10 states including large cities like Las Vegas, Philadelphia, New York, and Phoenix. Kid Car Safety It seems like we always hear about child seat safety, childproofing or pool safety for our kids, but as summer approaches we must remember some hidden dangers. One of these dangers is the family car. Around the country, and especially in South Florida’s sweltering heat, getting left or trapped in a hot car can be just as dangerous as getting in a car accident. This year alone three children have died as a result of being left in a car, and some of these occurrences happened on mild days with only 70 degrees. In most cases, children get hurt when they are “forgotten” in a hot car, a child is playing in an unattended vehicle, gets stuck in the trunk, or when an adult intentionally leaves a child in a car. On a typical summer day the temperature inside a car, even if the windows are rolled down a little, can quickly rise above 120 degrees; and on a mild day the temperature in a car can surpass

100 degrees. It takes only 10 minutes for the temperature inside a hot car to rise 19 degrees, and in 20 minutes, it rises 29 degrees. At these temperatures, kids are at risk for heat stroke, which can lead to a high fever, dehydration, seizures, stroke and death. To protect your children yearlong, be mindful of the following: • DO NOT leave your children in a car. Cars can heat up quickly, especially on a hot sunny day. • Always lock your car and store the keys in a location where your kids cannot get to them. • Talk to your kids about playing in the car by themselves without adult supervision. • Install a trunk release mechanism, so kids cannot get trapped in the trunk. • Get your children out of the car first when you get home, and then take everything else like groceries or your dry cleaning out of the vehicle. • When leaving your car, check to make sure everyone is out of the car. Do not overlook any children

that have fallen asleep in the car. A way to never forget a child in the car is the stuffed animal method. Simply get a stuffed animal and place it in the child’s empty car seat. When you place the child in the seat, the stuffed animal is placed in a visible location, like the front seat. When you take the child out of the car, place the animal back in the car seat. This visual will help remind you there is a child in the back. This comes in handy when the driver, who normally does not transport the child, goes into “autopilot” mode and drives directly to work. Even if you leave a child in a car that is running with the air conditioning on, does not mean that they are any safer. There is still another danger. A child may accidentally put the car into drive, or get caught in a closing power window. Keep your children safe this summer and year round by always bringing them with you when running errands, or use a drivethrough if it is available.

Miami Lakes ‘Spring Fling’ during Easter weekend labeled a success Miami Lakes’ annual Spring Fling, co-hosted by the Town of Miami Lakes Cultural Affairs Committee and Youth Activities Task Force on April 19 at Miami Lakes Picnic Park West was a huge success. The free event started at 10 a.m. with the Easter Egg Hunt where hundreds of families enjoyed the

beautiful weather while children charged across the park grabbing as many colorful eggs as they could carry. The event that followed the hunt, Paint a Picture for Mom, was also very popular. Children created hundreds of special paintings to give to their mothers and grandmothers.

“Easter is a time of service and I was very proud of the dozens of volunteers that gave back to the community during the Spring Fling, said Vice Mayor Manny Cid. “The rain shower before the event and subsequent sunshine truly embodied Easter’s message of renewal and hope.

THANKFUL for a successful Spring Fling event are Miami Lakes officials (from left) Councilmember Tim Daubert, Youth Activities Task Force chair Lynn Matos, Special Events and Committees coordinator Clarisell De Cardenas, Cultural Affairs Committee chair Neill D. THE MIAMI LAKER

Horane Allison returns to HML as head football coach By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff Albeit Horane Allison is the new Trojan’s head football coach, he is not a stranger to Hialeah Miami Lakes High School. Allison was the running back coach under Keenan Lawhorne two seasons ago before he accepted a similar position at Norland

High. And long before his coaching career started, Allison played right guard at his alma mater under then-head coaches Dallas Cameron and Jeff Rodriguez. “It feels so good to be back,” Allison said while sitting at his desk making preparations for his new football team during Spring

HORANE ALLISON

practice, which started Monday, April 28. Allison became the head coach after Lawhorne was promoted as the school’s athletic director. His predecessor goaded him to seek the vacant coaching position because he was familiar with the offense and some of the players, and marveled at the job he did last year at Norland. “They hired the best candidate,” Allison said. The Miami native has the arduous task of turning around a team that finished 3-7 last season and never made the playoffs in more than five years. But after watching film of last year’s team, Allison said he immediately discovered the problem. “They lack confidence,” he said. “Me coming from Norland, I can help these kids try to win. They are young and a good team, but they lack confidence.” Allison said the challenge is changing the players’ cultural mindset, while they run the Spread Wing T offense, which Auburn used last season to upset Alabama. He said his players have grown accustomed to losing and he wants to plant a winning demeanor in their mindset. For starters, he allowed former FAU standout linebacker Randall Johnson, who’s preparing for the NFL draft, to speak to the players,

as his speech served as words of inspiration and encouragement. “He spoke to them to help encourage them to win,” said Allison, who coached Johnson at North Miami High. Allison said he will run the offense, while new defensive coach Cornelius Bosier will be in charge of stopping the opposing teams’ offenses. Though there is no clear starter at quarterback, Allison said freshmen Takarius Brown and sophomore Michael Alvarez are competing for the top spot during the Spring. The Trojans have a depth at the running back position with Maliak Burns, Maliak Shannon, Mario Maroles and incoming freshmen Terrell Thomas, who was a star on the Miami Gardens Optimist team. On the other side of the ball, Bosier will lead a group of hungry

defensive players, including linebackers Romeo Brown and Isaiah Small and defensive linemen Thomas Williams and Chris White. Allison played college ball at Methodist University in North Carolina, where he discovered coaching was his true calling. “My coach said you have what it takes to be a coach,” Allison said. Following graduation, he became the head coach at North Miami High. During his first coaching stint at Hialeah Miami Lakes, Allison led a group of running backs, who included then-rushing leader Hakeem Lawerence, who’s at Akron, and DeAndre Martin, a star at Wake Forest University. “Now you see where those guys are,” he said. “They are playing on a college level.”

American wins third straight District 16-7A baseball title The American High baseball team won the District 16-7A championship in dominate fashion beating Ronald Reagan, 12-2, and advancing the Patriots to the regionals and just three wins away from returning to the state tournament. It was American’s third consecutive district championship. This week, American faces South Broward in the regional quarterfinal. Miami Springs edged Goleman, 6-5, to claim the 15-6A District championship. Despite

the loss, Goleman will play in the regionals. Mater Academy upset Belen, 10, to claim the 16-6A District championship and advance to the regional quarterfinal. Monsignor Pace lost in the District 15-4A semifinal last week against Florida Christian. In softball, American High defeated Hollywood Hills in the 7A regional quarterfinal to set up a showdown against St. Thomas Aquinas in the semifinal this week.

South Florida Sluggers 12U baseball team needs support to play in Bahamas tourney Coaches and parents of the South Florida Sluggers, a 12Under AAA baseball team with many players from Miami Lakes, are looking for community support to send the team to tournaments in Gainesville and the Bahamas this summer and fall. The team began playing together four years ago under the direction of Regino Rodriguez, Robert Arroyo and Abnell Melendez, a trio of fathers who love the game and love their players. The team is planning to participate in the Bahamas Baseball Challenge Youth Baseball Tournament on August 8-14 that will feature teams from throughout the United States. During the week long event, the Sluggers will be able to compete against the highest level of young baseball teams and get the exposure they

need to take their talents and game up to another level. In order to make their dream a reality, the team is planning numerous fundraisers throughout the community to raise the funds needed to attend the tournament. Their goal is $6,000 and after one month, they have raised $1,430 from 46 donors. The South Florida Sluggers is a 501c(3) (Not for Profit) organization and any donation may be considered a tax deduction. For any sponsors that donate a minimum of $250, the team will present a sponsorship plaque and display their logo on a banner on display in the Bahamas and at all home games. Donations may be made to www.gofundme.com/southfloridasluggers.

Pace soccer stars win spots on The Miami Herald’s All-Dade teams Five soccer players from Monsignor Edward Pace High School's girls soccer team were nominated to The Miami Herald’s All-Dade teams. Yasbec Sosa, a senior, named to the All-Dade Third Team, is the captain and goal keeper. Sosa had an outstanding year and led the team to district semifinals with her outstanding leadership and defensive play. She was also selected to the All-Dade All Star Team and the DadeBroward All Star game. She will be signing with Wheaton College of Massachusetts in the coming weeks. Juliette Dubon, a sophomore, named to the All-Dade First Team, is the co-captain and center midfielder. She led the team in scoring for the second year in a row with 24 goals and 17 assists. Despite being a sophomore, Juliette has earned the respect of her teammates, not only because of her talents, but also her leadership abilities. She is currently on track to become Pace's all-time leading scorer for soccer. Elizabeth Alvarez, a junior, received her nomination as an All-Dade Honorable Mention because of her outstanding defensive play which did not permit a goal to be scored from her side in 9 games this year. Aida Rivera, a sophomore, also received Honorable Mention honors. Despite being out part of the year with injuries, her penalty kick against Mater Lakes in the District playoffs guaranteed the victory. Jenny Darbouze, a junior, received another Honorable Mention for her solid team play all year.

Math teacher Lilia Quinonez recognized as Barbara Goleman’s 2014 Teacher of the Year By Roselind Romero The Miami Laker staff Born and raised in Guayaquil, Ecuador, math teacher Lilia Quinonez at Barbara Goleman Senior High School first realized her love for teaching while tutoring in college as a side job while she pursued an engineering degree. “Soon, I realized that others enjoyed having me tutor because they finally understood the subject. I also loved being able to teach and help others,” said Quinonez. After receiving her bachelor's degree in Mathematics Education

from Florida Atlantic University and a master's in Mathematics from Nova Southeastern University, Quinonez began teaching at Miami Northwestern Senior High School for six years. She transferred to Miami Norland Senior High where she stayed for another six years before arriving at Goleman in 2006 where she has been ever since. Outside of the classroom, Quinonez offers tutoring in the mornings and afternoons and for her AP students, Quinonez offers tutoring on Fridays and Saturdays at Panera Bread, a local restaurant. When not teaching or tutoring,

Quinonez enjoys traveling, cycling, swimming and spending time with her children Douglas, 23, and Samantha, 15. Quinonez’s favorite reminder is a simple but powerful one: “Yes, you can.” Quinonez uses that phrase and “failure is not an option” to empower her students and motivate them to achieve higher levels of learning than those they have become accustomed to. Though this is Quinonez's first nomination for Teacher of the Year, it is one well supported by students. Her favorite memories from her career thus far are

Additionally, for the first time this year, Mater Academy hosted a spelling bee for the school champions of the Mater schools. Valenzuela and Fernandez both competed and placed in the top three at the middle school level. and offer interviews. It's very innovative in that they are using a performance-based approach in scoring,” said Albano. “In seeing the interviews with the students, the representatives are excited. It validates what they believe this course was going to do.” The AP seminar course is skillbased with no textbook. The course aims to prepare students to develop an argument on anything as a means of analysis. “There is no googling the answer,” said Albano. “This course makes them think. They end up learning the information with better comprehension.” The 75 students in the program this school year commented on the rigor of the course, noting it was manageable. Despite the cool demeanor of the students, when asked if anyone was feeling nervous for the upcoming AP exam a resounding “yes!” filled the room. “I think this is a very good program,” said Albano. “These are sophomores doing what freshmen in universities are doing. They are accelerating the process of critical thinking that schools are hoping students achieve before beginning college.” Verbal and writing skills are emphasized, as well as evaluation of different perspectives which in turn creates stronger interpersonal skills. Group and individual research papers are submitted as part of the curriculum and the AP seminar exam will take place in May.

Jose Marti Middle succeeds as MAST Academy By Roselind Romero The Miami Laker staff Jose Marti Middle School first opened its doors in 1987 under the direction of long time Miami Lakes resident Jose Enriquez Sr., and has since come full circle into the hands of his son, current principal Jose Enriquez Jr. Jose Marti transformed from a middle school with a hard reputation to a MAST Academy program for grades 6 through 12 three years ago, joining the other three MAST Academies in Dade County including the Biscayne maritime campus, the Homestead medical campus, and the math and science technology academy at FIU. The MAST program at Jose Marti is for Math and Science Technology. Since its inception, Jose Marti MAST Academy has been awarded

an “A” grade and various accolades for its academic success. “I'm proud to be part of something new, innovative and handson,” said Enriquez Jr. In the last three years, the administration has been recruiting top-notch students who are eligible for admission into the program provided academic requirements have been met. Prospective incoming 10th graders must have a minimum 2.5 grade-point-average and must have already completed algebra and physical education. A minimum 2.0 grade-point-average is required for incoming middle schoolers. Beginning in the 7th grade, the program puts students through acceleration courses that culminate into advanced placement and dual enrollment once in high school

Spanish Lake science projects Spanish Lake Elementary's (SLE) faculty salutes the school’s fifth grade science fair winners. First place school winner and district honorable mention winner was Diana Mora. Mora's project was titled “Solar Power.” The purpose of her project was to see what time of the day was best for a solar powered car to travel the longest distance. She made her own car with solar panels.

District third place winner and second place school winner was Nicholas Marti who discovered how the body's digestive system interacts with certain chemicals. His candy-based project was titled “Sweet Science.” Third place school winner was Annabella Falero whose project was titled “Acids v.s. Marble.” She discovered how quickly various acids would dissolve pieces of marble.

grade levels. Currently the school has just over 1,000 students, a number the administration prides itself in since it creates a more efficient, intimate setting for students and greater access to one-on-one learning. The founding class for Jose Marti MAST Academy contains 50 students scheduled to graduate in 2015. Assistant principal Ivette DiazRubio said, “Students here are not just a number. That's one of the beauties of a small school environment.” The school is still accepting applications for the next school year, however they are not accepting applications for incoming juniors or seniors due to the heavy nature of the coursework assigned without adequate preparation. The innovative magnet program fully immerses students in a curriculum focused on life science, physical science, mathematics and computer science. The school was recognized in its first year as the City of Hialeah's School of the Year in 2011-2012 and, among other awards, acquired a $90,000 grant from the Business Partnership to Advance STEM Success (B-PASS). The school was also honored with a Magnet School of Excellence Award from the Magnet Schools of America. Though the school does not currently offer sports, students are still

What Jose Marti lacks in sports it makes up for in academic enhancement, clubs and organizations including a hands-on aquaponics research center and a native forest with over 20 different species. Jose Marti Mast Academy also boasts a long list of business partnerships including ALM Sports, AmericaTeve, Dream in Green,

MLEC’s Krisna Maddy wins Gates Millenium grant By Roselind Romero The Miami Laker staff Miami Lakes Educational Center's Krisna Maddy was recognized as one of 1,000 recipients of the Gates Millennium Scholarship, a national scholarship organization funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The scholarship covers unmet need and self-help aid for the cost of education, applicable to any college or university and is renewable maintaining the student meets satisfactory academic progress. The scholarship can also be applied to graduate school in the

areas of computer science, education, engineering, library science, mathematics, public health or science. Maddy now joins the prestigious rank of the Gates Millennium Scholars Program which not only funds post-secondary education but also provides leadership development programs with distinctive growth opportunities. The program also offers scholars Academic Empowerment (ACE) services to encourage academic excellence, mentoring services, and online resources that provide additional scholarship, fel-

lowship and internship opportunities. Maddy first received the news of her win from her parents. After arriving in Miami in the late hours of the night following a visit to the University of Chicago, Maddy discussed the different academic opportunities that lay before her with her parents. “That's when my mom said I wouldn't have to worry about those endless opportunities because I got the Gates scholarship,” said Maddy. “Then came the screams of excitement and tears to know I was selected.” The National Achievement Program Scholarship, the Foresters Merit Scholarship and a scholarship from the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce were all also awarded to Maddy for her academic and leadership achievements. “I cried, I screamed, I was overjoyed. I'm a Gates Millennium Scholar going to an Ivy League University,” said Maddy. “Today, women and minorities are not offered the same opportunities and I've reached a point in my life where I can say I pushed past the

KRISNA MADDY border of my limitations.” Maddy is currently the Student Advisor to the Miami-Dade County Public School's School Board, a peer-elected position, and has previously participated in SECME (Science, Engineering, Communications, Mathematics, Enrichment) Club, Key Club, National Honor Society, and the school's newspaper The Harbinger. She is also the school's Editor-in-Chief for the yearbook. As Student Advisor, Maddy is the singular student representative for the fourth largest school district in the nation. “I can't be too grown up because my peers won't see me as their equal, yet there is necessary responsibility and reform that comes with gaining the respect of adults,” said Maddy in a manner far beyond her years. “I've grown as a leader, unearthing the confidence needed to be a single representative voice for almost 400,000

students.” With a hefty 6.2 weighted grade-point-average, Maddy, like her classmate and fellow Gates Millennium Scholar, Flavia Cuervo, is Ivy League schoolbound in pursuit of a biochemistry degree. The senior was accepted into University of Florida, Duke University, University of Chicago, University of Pennsylvania and Georgetown University. She plans on attending the University of Pennsylvania. Medical school is in the not-sodistant future for Maddy who intends to apply knowledge gained in her biochemistry studies to have a greater understanding of the natural world. Much like her anticipated studies, Maddy's academic history in a nurturing school environment has been essential in building her innate abilities. “I don't go a day without highfiving my principal, Mr. James Parker, and that is truly encouraging,” said Maddy. The greatest springboard for Maddy's success, however, she attributes to her parents. “I struggle knowing that the life my mother and father built for me has been easier than their own, being that they're immigrants,” said Maddy. “As I reflect on the choices I'll face when I enter adulthood, I see my parents in me. I'll work fervently so the lives of my children will be easier than my own. I've vowed that I too will become a pillar of fearlessness, and grace.”

MLEC’s Flavia Cuervo admitted to Ivy Leagues By Roselind Romero The Miami Laker staff If Miami Lakes Educational Center (MLEC) recognized valedictorians, senior Flavia Cuervo would take the title for the 20132014 school year. The senior, who ranks as top student with a 6.39 weighted grade-point average, now has to decide which Ivy League school to attend. Cuervo was admitted into Harvard, Yale, Princeton, and Johns Hopkins, in addition to the in-state schools she applied to including the University of Miami, Florida International University, Florida State University, and the University of Central Florida. Cuervo's father, a native of Cuba and unfamiliar with some schools' reputations, sought his daughter's approval for the quality of the universities that admitted her, to which Cuervo happily assured him they are among the best. For a student whose superiors affectionately note her strengths as tenacity and fearlessness, Cuervo doesn't disappoint. A member of Key Club, National Honor Society, and Student Government, Cuervo somehow finds the time to engage in extra-curricular activities that not only look ideal on college applications, but that give back to the community. Apart from her inschool activities, Cuervo volunteers every summer at His House Children's Home, a private, nonprofit organization that provides residential care for abused, abandoned and neglected children. In academics, Cuervo has taken so many AP courses that a letter was mailed to the College Board requesting additional make-up days for AP exams since many of her exams overlapped. Cuervo also takes online Ace courses, dual-enrolled at Miami-Dade College, and is a student of the rigorous Cambridge Academy program at MLEC which first introduced her to journalism, and to teacher and mentor Neyda Borges. “She is a force of nature,” said Borges. “There is nothing she can't do. She is a holistic learner, she absorbs things and applies her knowledge from one topic to another like how history affects literature. She is very bright, you can see her mind working during discussions.” Cuervo is Editor-in-chief of MLEC's newspaper The Harbinger, which has garnered the attention of M-DCPS Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho, Miami Herald columnist Fabiola Santiago, and New York Times writer and Columbia professor Mirta Ojito through a

series of web discussions on global and local topics moderated on Twitter, aptly named “Twitter Talks.” “Everything I've done is because of Ms. Borges. I applied to the M.I.T.E.S program because she encouraged me to do so. She has been instrumental in getting me to where I am and taught me to be a leader for the newspaper, being able to delegate and keep writers interested,” said Cuervo. “She has been the most amazing person.” Cuervo noted that her teachers Erika Evans-Desimone and Joseph Walpole have challenged her in the classroom, much like Borges, and through their guidance she has learned to be passionate about English, history, journalism and science. Though her talent for words seems to come naturally, as do many of her qualities, it was Cuervo's time spent at M.I.T. for

FLAVIA CUERVO the M.I.T.E.S program (minority introduction to engineering and science) under the direction of professor Joshiawa Paulk, that convinced her to pursue biochemistry as her major. Cuervo is one of a handful of

students at MLEC who have been accepted into prestigious schools, a commonality that MLEC principal Jim Parker suggests is the right combination of career academies, perseverance, and courses that encourage interdisciplinary skills. “The secret is being a full academy model school and the students who work on their core requirements, but also apply those skills to career and education strands. They're not just sitting on topics without almost immediately applying it, like applying chemistry in culinary arts,” said Parker. The school has earned an “A” grade 7 times, 6 of which were consecutive, and with students like Cuervo, it's easy to see why. “It is extremely gratifying to see Flavia's acceptances into these schools. She listens closely and defends opinions carefully. She's tenacious without being aggressive. She is not presumptuous, almost bashful, and extremely

intelligent. I admire her perseverance,” said Parker. Cuervo received the Jorge Mas Canosa scholarship to aid her in the financial transition to an Ivy League, and she is now waiting to hear back from different scholarship organizations she applied to including the Ronald McDonald Scholarship program, and The Miami Herald's Silver Knight Awards. She was recently named one of 1,000 national winners for the Gates Millennium Scholars program which is a renewable scholarship, available for any college or university. “I am incredibly happy, thrilled and terrified!” wrote Cuervo in an email to friends and family. “As I reflect on all of the hard work, the marathon studying, writing, calculating and rewriting that helped me achieve this, I also know that I am very blessed to have the support of family, friends, teachers, mentors and colleagues.”

Pace pastoral ministry students and LIFE leaders attend Chrism Mass Monsignor Edward Pace High School's campus minister, Andres Novela, asked his future and current pastoral ministry students and LIFE leaders to attend the Chrism Mass during this year's Holy Week. The students felt blessed to be a part of this important event as the honorable Archbishop Wenski and all the archdiocese priests were in attendance. Students watched as the Archbishop blessed the Chrism oil that will be used during the liturgical year for all of the parishes. Allowing students to experience this momentous event reaffirmed their faith in the Catholic Church, and they felt revitalized and prepared to begin Holy Week.
