Ceasar Mestre faces Xiomara Pazos in Seat 6 race By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff Miami Lakes Town Council candidate Xiomara Pazos said she’s not a lawyer, politician or lobbyist who are mostly beholden to special interest people that she believes led to the corruption charges of the former mayor. Her opponent, incumbent Councilmember Ceasar Mestre, who’s an attorney, said he’s proud of his career and alluded to Miami Lakes’ accomplishments since he was first elected in 2010 as to why he is the better candidate for Seat 6. The two squared off during a Candidate Forum at Miami Lakes Town Hall, where they answered questions and addressed local issues that were raised by residents to determine the best aspirant for the November 5 general election. Former Miami-Dade County Commissioner Katy Sorenson, who’s now chairperson for The Good Government Initiative, served as the moderator during the sparsely attended event. At the start of the debate, Mestre defended his track record
not only as a councilmember, but as a civic leader after Pazos took a verbal swipe at his law and lobbying career. “I am not lawyer, I am not a politician and I am not a lobbyist,” said the political neophyte. “Therefore, I am not here to make people look impressive. My opponent is a lawyer, a lobbyist, a politician and insider to the town.” Mestre, 52, countered by saying he’s glad to be an attorney and instanced he’s the first candidate in Miami Lakes history to muster the endorsements from the entire Town Council. “I am not apologizing for being a lawyer,” he said. “I worked fulltime, then became a police officer and went to law school. I worked very hard to get to where I am. I wasn’t born with a Silver Spoon in my mouth.” Mestre said the ideal M i a m i Lakes councilmember reflects the character of his campaign from 2010, which helped him beat an incumbent. “Our town government should be run by professional, honest and active people with proven leader-
ship,” he said. “I am very grateful and very humble to be the first candidate to be endorsed by the entire Town Council. That says a lot.” Following his first election loss in 2008, Mestre said he resumed his civic duties by serving on the Miami Lakes Economic Development Committee, the Public Safety Committee and president of his homeowners association. “Even when I lost in 2008, I still volunteered to help this town,” Mestre said. “We continued to strive to make Miami Lakes the best town with one of the lowest tax rates behind Pinecrest and Aventura.” Pazos, 57, appeared to be unaware of some of the issues for Miami Lakes residents, including updating the Strategic Plan and the town’s capital improvement projects. “But when I get elected, I will work on them,” she said. Though she is devoid of public office experience, Pazos said starting her own business from scratch and working as a single mother

prepares her for any challenges in the political arena. She is CEO and president of Professional Medical Transportation Corporation in Hialeah, a non-emergency medical transportation company. The company has been in business since 1996 and is currently serving clients in Miami-Dade and Broward Counties. As a business owner and parent, her commitment to her community led to public service. In 1992, she began working at
Vitas Hospice and was commended for excellence in patient care and remained there after she started her own company in 1996. Pazos is also a past vice president of Serenity Point Homeowners Association in Miami Lakes. Town Parks Director Tony Lopez takes Miami Lakes Pumpkin Patch 10-years of experience to Jacksonville offers events through Oct. 25 By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff In his 10 plus years working for the Miami Lakes Parks and Leisure Services Department, seven of them as the director, Tony Lopez put the town on the map. Under his leadership, Miami Lakes was nationally recognized for its unparalleled park system that comprised more than 100 pocket parks and green spaces, two 20-plus acre active/athletic parks, 70 miles of right-of-ways and medians, urban tree canopy of 17,000 trees and three community centers. In fact, Miami Lakes is a twotime All-America City finalist, seven-time Playful City USA recipient, seven-time Tree City USA winner and claimed the 100 Best Communities for Young
A Look Inside:
People Award. For Lopez, he embraced the challenges that meld Miami Lakes into arguably the best parks and recreation city in the country. “I see challenges as an opportunity to do something great,” he said from his office at Miami Lakes Town Hall. “Without challenges, you can’t make progress, you work through them and find solutions for them.” Lopez, who was Miami Lakes’ first recreation employee, is now taking his talents to the city of Jacksonville. He accepted the director of Parks, Recreation and Community Services job in the north Florida city. In his new position, Lopez will oversee the largest urban parks system in the United States by pro-

ly. Not once in a while, they get done yearly.” In light of the Florida Supreme Court lawsuit filed by former mayor Michael Pizzi to force Governor Rick Scott to revoke his suspension to get his old job back, Pazos said the town should revise the town charter to prevent future similar cases. She then questioned the town’s role in the lawsuit to defend the charter, which some residents say supports Wayne Slaton as the mayor following a 2013 special election to replace Pizzi following his arrest. “The town should not get involved,” she said. “We need a fresher start and revise the document.” Mestre, who served as the interim mayor last year, said he wouldn’t change his vote that allowed Miami Lakes to hire a law firm to help the town protect its charter from any lawsuits. “Last year was a very difficult period for Miami Lakes but we didn’t miss a beat,” Mestre said. “We went on to improve things in the town, and we voted on the issue of the charter because the charter has to be followed. I wouldn’t change my vote.” Pazos said residents have been complaining about the lack of communication and responses from town staff.
She said communication is key to running a good town. For traffic congestion, Mestre said with 94 percent of Miami Lakes built out with the Dunnwoody Lakes residential project on N.W. 154 Street and 87 Avenue left, the roadways are clogged up during morning and afternoon rush hours. To help alleviate the traffic gridlock, Mestre suggested encouraging businesses to allow employees to leave during staggered times. Both candidates support the three town charter amendments on the November 5 ballot.
They include allowing residents to decide whether the town should consider future annexation plans through a referendum, resume pursuing the town independent townwide zip code and allowing councilmembers to appoint residents to the city’s committees instead of the mayor. Though Councilmember Frank Mingo is leading the campaign for the annexation charter amendment, Mestre initially proposed that any changes to the town’s boundaries should first go before residents. Mestre said he was appalled at a study to determine if annexing
Palm Springs North was feasible and that Miami Lakes residents wouldn’t be able to vote on the issue; residents in the unincorporated areas would only vote. “Mingo came aboard and took it a step further to make a charter amendment,” Mestre said. “It was something that came close to annexation without residents’ input.” The Candidate Forum can be watched by going to the Town’s website, www.miamilakes-fl.gov, and go to the left hand side and click “Council Meetings,” then on the blue tab, click “Speciality” and lastly click on “Candidate Forum” to view.
Guarding the Ghouls: Halloween Safety Tips By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff To keep the Halloween scares relegated to the haunted houses and away from child injury, follow these helpful tips on Halloween safety, courtesy of The Miami Laker. Spooky and Safe Streets: According to www.safekids. org, “On average, children are more than twice as likely to be hit by a car and killed on Halloween than on any other day of the year.” To ensure safety on or near roads, trick-or-treaters should be: Seen, Aware, Free of anything that may obstruct vision, and Escorted by a

vigilant chaperone, or for short “SAFE.” Reflective costumes or carrying flashlights will make children visible to drivers, and in conjunction with children being aware of surroundings, being careful to keep masks away from the eyes when crossing streets, and being chaperoned will all lower risk of injury. Drivers should also be aware of their surroundings by eliminating distractions and take extra time to drive through residential areas. No Tricks and All Treats: Costume accessories should not be sharp to avoid accidents. Avoid wearing decorative contact lenses to lower risk of eye injury or infection. Pumpkin carvings should be handled by an adult and lit pump-
kins should not be left unattended. While trick-or-treating, sticking to a well-known and well-lit neighborhood path is safest. Never enter a home or vehicle for treats or accept rides from strangers. Avoid homes that are not well-lit. Healthy Haunts: Be sure to only eat the treats that have been inspected and approved by a parent or guardian. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, parents should be sure that all treats are factory-wrapped, and throw away any spoiled or suspicious items. Eating a full meal before trick-ortreating will keep children from eating too many treats. Enjoy a spooky and safe Halloween!

Tony Lopez to head Jacksonville’s parks district (Continued from Page 1) out the biggest city in Florida, with an estimated $41 million budget and 250 employees. He starts on October 27. The Miami native said the experience under his belt and challenges he endured in Miami Lakes helped him prepare for a much bigger role. “What we have done here will help prepare me for any challenges out there,” he said. Lopez said the biggest challenge for Miami Lakes was starting the park and recreation department from scratch with only two employees and writing the first rules and regulations to ensure residents enjoy themselves without any danger. “Now the department is growing with 10 employees and we completed the Greenways and

Lopez said he is proud of the town’s accomplishments during his time here and leaves behind what he considers to be some of the most dedicated and hardworking staff members to lead the department in the future. “What I am going to miss the most about Miami Lakes is the staff, residents, Town Council and the leadership,” he said. “The community feeling here is good from the volunteers to the people who work here.” Mayor Wayne Slaton said Miami Lakes was lucky to have
Lopez’s services for a decade. “We are extremely proud of Tony and grateful for all the years that he dedicated to the development and growth of our town’s Community and Leisure Services department,” Slaton said. “We wish him the best as he prepares to embark on his new professional opportunity that will place him at the helm of the largest urban parks system in the country.” Miami Lakes Town Manager Alex Rey said Lopez’s contribution to the town is priceless. “His numerous accomplishments and contribution to the town will be felt here for years to come,” he said. “Mr. Lopez had a great career in Miami Lakes where was hired 10 years ago as a recreation leader and successfully progressed to the director of Community and Leisure Services. Three town charter amendments on Nov. 4 ballot By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff On November 4, Miami Lakes voters will cast ballots on two town charter amendments and a non-binding straw ballot measure that call for residents to decide whether the town should consider future annexation plans through a referendum, resume pursuing the town independent town-wide zip code and allowing councilmem-
bers to appoint residents to the city’s committees instead of the mayor. Vice Mayor Manny Cid and Councilmembers Frank Mingo and Tony Lama are leading the charge to the ballot initiatives that define the powers, functions and essential procedures of Miami Lakes’ government. This year, councilmembers unanimously approved Cid’s straw
ballot proposal to determine if residents want the town to continue to pursue its own zip code, Mingo’s annexation request and Lama’s change for the committee members selection process. Since he was elected to the Town Council in 2012, one of Cid’s campaign promises was to launch an initiative for an independent zip code instead of using the City of Hialeah Postmaster.

Cid said a Miami Lakes zip code can benefit residents, especially motorists who can save money on their auto insurance. Earlier this year, councilmembers approved Cid’s request for town staff to study several alternatives for a zip code, but Miami Lakes received an official USPS letter denying it. The USPS said: “It is the determination of this office that the accommodations extended by the Postal Service were reasonable and any other changes would not be operationally feasible and would also be cost prohibitive to the postal service.” The Town of Miami Lakes has three different zip codes but they are all within the Hialeah Post Office. But Cid said though it would not be operationally feasible, maybe the town can assist with an optional plan, including Miami Lakes contracting with a delivery service approved by the USPS, in which postage revenue would be split between USPS and Miami Lakes in which the town could set up and pay for its own mail distribution system. Such an agreement would create an independent Miami Lakes zip code, he said.
“The ballot question for thousands of voters would say yes, let’s get this down and move forward,” Cid said during a phone interview. “Auto insurance is too high and the town’s own zip code would provide some relief for 31,000 residents.” Mingo also vows to keep a campaign promise to allow residents the right to chose whether to increase the size of the 6.5 squaremile town before councilmembers vote on any annexation proposals. Last year, Mingo won a special election to fill the vacancy for a Town Council Seat created when then-councilmember Nelson Hernandez resigned to run for mayor. Mingo ran unopposed for the November 4 general election and won a four-year term. He said Miami Lakes’ fact-finding mission on conceivably annexing Palm Springs North in 2012 under-then mayor Michael Pizzi essentially sealed his decision to run for elected office for the first time. “During the special election last year, I was a vocal opponent of our former mayor’s annexation plan that would have extended Miami Lakes’ boundaries as far north as

Miami Lakes native Broderick Schwinghammer earns coveted Boy Scouts’ Eagle Scout Award Miami Lakes native Broderick Schwinghammer earned the prestigious Eagle Scout Award from Boy Scouts of America, and was celebrated at his Eagle Court of Honor in September. Schwinghammer has been an exceptional scout honoring the Scout Oath every day, and honoring his community which was reflected in his Eagle project, the creation of a new park, the Miami Lakes Poetry Park, where he led a team of volunteers to turn an abandoned isolated lot on Sable Drive into a waterfront environmental preserve fostering writing. The new Eagle began his scouting career in 2001 as a first-grader with Cub Scout Park 660. Over five years, he earned his Tiger, Wolf, Bear and Webelos badges, with 16 activity badges, the World
Conservation badge, and Cub Scouting’s highest honor, the Arrow of Light. In the fifth grade, he joined Boy Scout Troop 566 chartered to Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church. During his time in Troop 566, he participated in 51 nights of camping, white water rafting, hiking over 250 miles with the troop including three Barefoot Mailman hikes of 35 miles each, five Old Cutler Trail hikes of 12 miles, and 35 miles in the mountains of North Carolina. He attended four summer camps and did a 44-mile kayak adventure in the Everglades backcountry earning the Historic Trail Badge. He traveled to Minnesota to trek 75 miles into Canada on canoes from the National Boy Scout Camp known as the
Three charter amendments on Town’s November 4 ballot (Continued from Page 8) Broward County,” Mingo said during an interview. “Annexation in the form that was proposed would have split Miami Lakes as we know it. The present situation where the Town Council has the lone annexation approval authority is not good public policy.” Mingo said residents first should decide if they want Miami Lakes to add some land through a referendum. “This ensures that the people will have the final say over the future of Miami Lakes instead of a few ambitious politicians or special interest groups,” Mingo said. For the town’s committees, under the current town charter, councilmembers nominate residents and the mayor has the final say by appointing them to serve on the committees. Under his powers, he can also reject any nominations. Lama said the existing procedure is not fair to councilmembers and residents who are willing to volunteer to help make Miami Lakes the best city around. “The charter amendment abstracts the politics of the committee selection process and ensure fairness among the council and residents,” said Lama, who is pushing for councilmembers to appoint committee members. Since incorporation Miami Lakes created six different committees to help town officials with education, kids initiatives and events, culture, senior citizens, economic growth and military veterans. Residents serve on the Miami Lakes Education Advisory Board, Miami Lakes Youth Activities Task Force, Cultural Affairs Committee, Elderly Affairs Committee, Economic Development Committee and Veteran
Affairs Committee. Also under the current charter, once a new mayor is elected or appointed, all committee members’ terms expire and new residents must be appointed to fill the vacancies. Lama said a charter change would level the playing field for lawmakers and residents who are anxious to serve on the committees. “We all should have an equal numbers of appointments,” Lama said. “The appointments would still require a vote as a whole but abstract the politics from the committees.”
Northern Tier, earning the Boy Scout 75 miler award. Schwinghammer hosted a dozen Flag ceremonies and Flag retirement ceremonies for the town and community, went cave diving and zip lining, water skiing, and got into Boy’s Life magazine for surfing with Troop 566. He successfully completed National Youth Leadership Training and was inducted into the Order of the Arrow, the Boy Scouts’ National Honor Society. During his scouting career, he has kept his duty to God front and center. He earned the My Faith and Promise religious emblem, the St. Paul Patch, and then completed the two-year program for the Ad Altari Dei Catholic religious emblem. While in Troop 566, he served as Troop Chaplain, Librarian, assistant Patrol Leader, Troop Historian, Patrol Leader, Scribe, assistant Senior Patrol Leader, Troop Guide, and Senior Patrol Leader. “Scouting has been a huge part of my life and the experiences and challenges have made me the person I am today,” Schwinghammer said. Scouting skills were beneficial to Schwinghammer’s activities outside of scouting. He just graduated from the MAST Academy with a 5.6 grade point average, and received the PTSA Young Writers Award from his school. He was a member of JROTC, the Salsa Club, and treasurer of his class. He was a four-year varsity swimmer going to district competitions twice, has become a life guard and scuba certified. He has been a page in the Florida Legislature and successfully com-
pleted an internship at the University of Miami Medical School, passing medical school classes and certifications at 15 years old. In the community, Schwinghammer has volunteered hundreds of hours, especially as a member of the Youth Advisory Committee of the Children’s Trust, executing community-based programs and lobbying in Tallahassee for Miami-Dade’s children. He served on the Youth Advisory Committee’s executive board twice, once as secretary and this year as president. Regarding his Eagle Project, Schwinghammer knew he wanted to serve his hometown, and creating a space to foster writing and enjoying nature was a clear reflection of his personality and commitment. “Achieving Eagle was much more difficult that I thought it would be, but it made it that much more worth it,” he said. For his next frontier, Schwinghammer just began his freshman year at the University of Florida.

Madison Fernandez has charitable 8th birthday party By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Miami Lakes resident Madison Fernandez has always had a heart for others, so when she requested that in lieu of presents for her 8th birthday party, she would have guests bring shoes for orphans in India, her parents weren’t caught by surprise. The only surprising element was how detailed her charitable plans were. “I’m not sure why she chose India, or shoes for that matter, but
she did,” said Madison’s mom, Leslie Fernandez. “I took it upon myself to contact several orphanages in India and the first person to reply was the executive director and founder of Sunil’s Home.” Leslie had since been in contact with Sunil’s Home’s founder, who happens to reside in South Florida. The founder was able to provide Leslie with a list of necessities as she explained that shoes are not typical of their culture. Instead, clothing items were gathered.
Each of the 48 children at Sunil’s Home received a gift from a guest at Madison's birthday. The small celebration the Fernandez family was once planning turned out to be quite the occasion. Madison’s 8th birthday was held on Saturday, October 11,
at Monsignor Edward Pace High School, Leslie and her husband's alma mater. “I believe our children are some of the most privileged children in this town,” said Leslie. “They are all blessed with nice homes, beautiful clothing, and tons of extracur-
ricular activities and I believe we need to instill in them an ‘attitude of gratitude.’ My husband and I could have chosen to ignore our daughter’s request, but instead we chose to nurture this beautiful act of kindness.”

Marlene Quincoces continues philanthrophic work By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Marlene Quincoces, affectionately known as MarlyQ, was featured on the front page of The Miami Laker in the summer of 2002 for her tireless efforts giving to the community in what amounted to over 3,000 service hours in 3 years. Not much has changed by way of passionate pursuit, except for the inevitable growth of Quincoces’ giving. The former Hialeah Miami Lakes High School student and Lakes native is now the founder and CEO of Perform Acts of Random Kindness, or PARK Project. PARK Project is the culmination of over a decade of community service and is in itself another vehicle for service as it was designed to help cash-strapped charitable organizations and schools raise funds through various events. The signature event is a 5K run in North Miami Beach. “PARK stands for ‘Perform Acts of Random Kindness’ and I believe one act can really make a change,” said Quincoces. Quincoces was a part of a lengthy list of service clubs while in high school, received a key to the Town of Miami Lakes for her academic and extracurricular pursuits, and went on to found and lead FIU's chapter for the American Cancer Society's Relay
for Life. After her years of volunteering for Relay for Life, she was offered a job with the organization that were in the field of education. “I was in shock that I was offered to get paid to do what I had already done for years for free,” said Quincoces. “It made me realize that there was an opportunity to work in what I have always loved doing.” After working for various nonprofits, Quincoces found the work culture created an overload of stress, turnover, and burned out employees which led her back to her roots in finding the beauty in the simple act of random kindness. Fueled by this notion, she went on to create PARK Project which began as a 5K event to raise funds for servicemen and servicewomen in honor of the 10th anniversary of September 11 in 2011. PARK continued to grow and mold into the annual event it has become today. After revolutionizing the concept model, an improvement that earned Quincoces and her staff third place in The Miami Herald’s Business Plan Challenge Award, PARK Project now serves to raise funds for any charity, non-profit, school and organization named by participating runners. “Our mission was to create an annual event that would inspire people to leave their mark and PARK for whatever cause moves
ML children invited to create Main Street banner artworks Miami Lakes children, as well as students from area schools, are invited to participate in the 2nd Annual Main Street Banner Art Contest where up to 26 winners’ artwork will be showcased down Main Street on the light pole banners. This year's theme is: “My Home, My Community.” Artworks can show, but are not limited to, any of the following attributes that connect with Miami Lakes: Culture + Heritage, Parks + Nature, Arts, Town Center, or Active Living. The contest is open to all children who live in Miami Lakes or attend a Miami Lakes public school. Local public schools include Miami Lakes K-8 Center, Bob Graham Education Center,
them and also shine the spotlight on the kind philanthropic efforts happening across South Florida every day,” said Quincoces. “Instead of telling people what cause they would run for, we’re leaving that decision to them.” Anyone can register a team for the 5k Park Fest to support their chosen charity. Half of each $40 registration fee goes directly to the participant’s charity of choice, and the remaining half to the budgets of philanthropic groups for an estimated $200,000 total funds raised. When asked what motivation moves her to give so intensely, Quincoces bashfully offered that her birthday coincides with the Feast Day of the Patron Saint of Charity, revered in Cuba and South Florida. “I have no other explanation than to say that I feel I was born for this, and I was blessed to be given the tools I need to do it,” said Quincoces. In the midst of leading a largescale charitable event, Quincoces is also in the middle of planning her wedding to PARK Project cofounder Humberto Casanova, a fellow HML classmate. What began as a beach cleanup in 1999 snowballed into a charitable force to be reckoned with. Dozens upon dozens of charities

ML music teacher Mario Ortiz nominated for Latin Grammy By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Mario Ortiz Jr. is a music teacher at Miami Lakes K-8 Center by day, but moonlights as a feisty trumpet player and salsa bandleader whose band, Mario Ortiz All Star Band, has been nominated for "Best Salsa Album" for its 50th Anniversary album in the upcoming 15th Latin Grammy Awards. This is the band's second nomination, the first was in 2010 for the 45th Anniversary album. Ortiz and his band are celebrating 50 years of musical excellence, which for Ortiz, began at age 10 when he first began piano lessons. At 12, Ortiz was introduced to the trumpet by his late father, Mario Ortiz Sr., and continued to follow in his father's footsteps as band-
leader and noted musician. He was admitted into the Escuela Libre de Musica in San Juan, Puerto Rico where he met Gilberto Santa Rosa. Ortiz played professionally with an all kids band led by well-recognized musician Maximo Torres. Later, he once again reunited with Santa Rosa in Don Perignon's Band. Ortiz then played for Tito Allen's Band where he gained prestige as a rising trumpet player. In 1978, Ortiz spent the summer at the Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan and then joined Willy Rosario's Orchestra where he recorded five albums. Ortiz has recorded with various prestigious salsa artists such as Oscar D'Leon, Andy Montanez, Marvin Santiago, and Tommy
MARIO ORTIZ JR., and his wife Sailly Hernandez, will be attending the 15th Annual Latin Grammy Music Awards in Las Vegas for Ortiz's band's nomination for Best Salsa Album of the Year.

Olivencia among others. Ortiz then joined his father's band to play with the likes of Julio Iglesias, Iris Chacon, Lissette Alvarez, Danny Rivera and many more. After recording six albums Ortiz moved to Miami to attend the University of Miami's music school and earned his Master's degree in jazz pedagogy while spending his summers away from school touring with big names in music such as Willy Chirino, Chayanne, Tito Nieves, Celia Cruz, Juan Gabriel, Donna Summers, and Gloria Gaynor. The fourth and fifth Fiestas Patronales de Puerto Rico, a huge event held in Florida, was directed by Ortiz. The fifth Fiestas Patronales were dedicated to Ortiz's father, Mario Ortiz Sr., a revered composer and arranger in Puerto Rico. The band's previously nominated album, the 45th Anniversary, was also a tribute to Ortiz's father. While Ortiz still records extensively, he has taken a teaching approach to his talents by becoming a certified music teacher for Miami-Dade County Public Schools. Ortiz previously taught at Hialeah Gardens Middle School, Ernest Graham Elementary, and Ben Sheppard Elementary School before finding his current position at Miami Lakes K-8 Center. Along the winding roads Ortiz's career in music and teaching have taken him, he found his wife, Sailly Hernandez, currently a teacher at Ben Sheppard Elementary School, to join him for the ride. She will be attending the
Latin Grammy's alongside Ortiz with crossed fingers for a win. Ortiz and his band are up against Marc Anthony, Maite Hontele, Tito Nieves, and Aymee Nuviola. The 15th Annual Latin
Grammy Awards is set for Thursday, November 20, at the MGM Grand Garden Area in Las Vegas and will be broadcast live on the Univision Network from 811 p.m.

On Sunday, September 21, Miami Dolphins’ legendary running back and longtime Miami Lakes resident Tony Nathan was among a group of former players inducted into the team’s Walk of Fame. The ceremony took place during half time of the DolphinsChiefs game at Sun Life Stadium. Joining Nathan, who was a star at the University of Alabama, in the 2014 class are former defensive end Jeff Cross, cornerback Sam Madison and guard Ed Newman. Nathan, 57, was selected in the third round (61st overall) in the 1979 draft by the Dolphins, who was depicted as a smart and elusive runner with great pass-catching abilities. He was dominant during the Dolphins’ 1979-87 era in his role as the starting running back in Super Bowls XVII and XIX. Nathan accumulated 3,543 career yards rushing and 383 career receptions for 3,592 yards. Nathan, who also garnered 32 touchdowns during his career, is the only player in Dolphins history to rank among the team’s top 10 leaders in career rushing yards and receptions.
Mater Academy, Pace High, HML records wins last week Mater Academy is undefeated in their district, Hialeah Miami Lakes crushed their opponents and Monsignor Pace won with seconds left on the clock, while Barbara Goleman, Hialeah Gardens and Dade Christian weren’t so lucky last week in Miami-Dade high school football action. Mater Academy is 3-0 in district games and the Lions showed just how dominate they can be with a 43-0 rout over rival Westland Hialeah. Mater Academy blew them away at Traz Powell Stadium, where quarterback Temotha Herrington (a perfect nine-fornine) threw three touchdown passes and back-up Zack Moss three for two additional scores. Herrington finished the game with 143 passing yards with wide receiver Steven Rodriguez catching two scoring passes. Rodriguez grabbed five receptions for 104 yards. Westland (0-7) was shut out for the sixth time in its seven losses. The Lions overall record is 4-2 and face Miami Springs on October 24 and American on October 30 in two key district games. Hialeah Miami Lakes crushed Alonso and Tracy Mourning, 360, with 276 yards on offense. Trojans running back Simini Walden carried the ball seven times for 75 yards and two touchdowns, while HML’s defense kept
the Sharks scoreless throughout the entire game. The Trojans’ defense scored a touchdown with a fumble recovery that led 28 yards for the touchdown and got a safety. Miami Springs stayed unbeaten with a 27-21 victory of Barbara Goleman in a District 16-7A showdown. The Golden Hawks are 6-0, 3-0 is district play, and face American this week in a key district game. Hialeah Gardens (2-4) allowed Ferguson to rush for 391 rushing yards, as they lost 47-14, leading District 15-8 with a 2-0 record. The Falcons took a 33-0 lead at halftime and stopped a late rally, as Hialeah Gardens used the nohuddle offense and scored two touchdowns. But the Falcons’ defense scored two touchdowns off turnovers to put the game away. Falcons’ running backs Gianni McCrea and Anthony Moscoso rushed for 60 yards and 65 yards, respectively, in the first quarter. Dade Christian was on the brink of a victory but Pace took the lead with 42 seconds left to beat the Crusaders 18-12. Wide reciever Khalil Love hailed in a 31-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Eric Walker to seal the victory. Crusader’s quarterback Malik Wisdom threw for 11 yards and ran for 92 yards.

By Dave Gergely Shula's Golf Sales & Tournament Coordinator Right in the middle of Miami Lakes sits Shula’s Golf Club with its manicured championship Senator Course (named for Senators Ernest and Bob Graham). Yet out of more than 22,000 Miami Lakes residents, few have ever played golf or given up because one of the following reasons: • “I don’t have clubs‌â€? Loaner sets are often available at courses, and golf shops usually allow customers to try before buying. • “I don’t have anything to wear‌â€? Don’t let the wardrobes of the professionals scare you, they get them for free. Just wear a pair of sneakers, a collared shirt and a pair of shorts. • “It’s boring ‌â€? Watching golf, like watching baseball on television, may not be your “cup of tea.â€? However, playing golf, just like playing baseball, is a fun and active sport. • “Golf is for old fogies‌â€? While retirees may have more free time to play golf, a recent survey found that of adults 30 and under, 60 percent said they have strong interest in learning how to play if they had a better understanding of the game and could receive some fun instruction. Fun and comprehensive instruction is available at Shula’s and many other courses in the area. • “You don’t get any exercise driving a golf cart around‌â€? Believe it or not, playing a round of golf even with a cart burns approximately 1,300 calories, more than you would jumping on a trampoline for 2+ hours
or strength training with weights for 2 hours. • “We like to do things as a family‌â€? What better way to avoid the crowded, sunburned beach than to bring the family out for an afternoon of golf? • “It’s not good for business‌â€? The old adage rings true – more business is done during a round of golf on a course than 7 days in the office. Next time you want to “pitchâ€? a client invite him or her for a round of golf and see how well that works. • “It interferes with my texting‌â€? There is no better social media than interacting in person, with friends and family, in the fresh air on the golf course. • “I’d like to play golf , but it takes too much time‌â€? Many courses offer rates for 6, 9, or 18 holes. With twilight rates beginning each day at 3 p.m., you don’t have to play a full 18 holes, you can enjoy during whatever time frame is best. • “I’d like to play Golf, but it’s too expensive‌â€? Although golf may sometimes be expensive, many golf courses are incentivizing giving it a try with specials. At Shula’s golf course, after 3 p.m. people are welcome to play for as little as $30 with cart included. Also, with a paying adult, kids under 16 play for free. Next time you drive past Shula’s Golf Club and you see the statue of the young man with the golf club in his hands welcoming folks to beautiful Miami Lakes, take a second to remind yourself there is no good excuse for not playing golf.

Pace’s SpARTan Boot Camp draws middle schoolers By Rene D. Basulto Special to The Miami Laker On October 4, over 100 middle school students from across South Florida attended Monsignor Edward Pace High School’s Third Annual SpARTan Boot Camp. The one-day camp featured workshops in art, drama, dance, and music taught by the lead teachers of Pace’s Signature Academy of Visual and Performing Arts. Workshops were split into morning and afternoon sessions with a talent showcase for parents at 2:30 p.m. While some campers spent the whole day in just one type of workshop, many others diversified their day with a variety of workshops, such as taking
Drawing in the morning and Musical Theatre in the afternoon. The ability to mix and match also allowed campers to try new things regardless of what experience they had in the subject. The boot camp was an opportunity for students from grades 5 through 8 to experience the classes, activities, and programs offered by Pace and its Signature Academies. Teachers ran workshops much like they run their classes, so campers also got a bit of the high school experience. Christina Pla-Guzman, head of the Academy of Visual and Performing Arts’ Theatre Program, helmed the Theatre and Musical Theatre workshops inside Pace’s
Spartan Center. During the Theatre workshop, campers worked on improvisation and pantomime skills. Groups mimed a tug of war battle, crazed shoppers going after a Christmas present in a store, and a group of elderly people competing in a pie-eating contest. For Musical Theatre, campers worked on choreography and practiced performing a selection of “The Nicest Kids in Town” from the musical “Hairspray.” Over in the art room, Art Program head Marcel Navarro instructed campers in Drawing and Sculpture and gave them a chance to let their creative side out and create something that they can take

ing campers to follow along. In the Art and Music workshops, Pace students were on hand to reinforce what campers should be doing and also give suggestions. After the workshops, family and friends entered the Spartan Center for the talent showcase, where they got to see artwork from the Drawing workshops displayed on the walls and the finalized group performances from the Dance and Drama workshops on stage. The showcase was the first use of the refurbished Spartan Center stage, with new curtains funded by class gifts from Pace’s Class of 2013. Alyssa Veloso, a 5th grader from Mother of Our Redeemer Catholic School who attended the Drawing and Musical Theatre workshops, said that she not only learned new techniques, but also more about Pace. “I thought it was really fun,” said Veloso. “[The camp] teaches you a lot of things about the arts for when you’re older.” The camp and similar ones before it have been very successful, as Pla-Guzman says that there are students who have attended multiple camps and that many of her current first-year Academy students participated in past camps. “A lot of really talented people are coming out of the program,” she said. Pace senior Bradley Perez, who was helping with the drama workshops, echoed this and saw many campers full of promise. “It makes you look forward to the future,” said Perez.
home. Students in the Drawing workshop learned about textures, colors, and creating contours of still-life objects, while Sculpture workshop students created abstract works of art using cardboard. Guitar and Band Program lead teacher Ross Goldman guided students in the Guitar and Band workshops to practice their basic skills, learn music theory, and work together to perform songs. Guitar campers worked on playing chords or single notes depending on their experience, while Band campers brought their own instrument and learned about scales, basic music theory, harmony, and intonation. Campers also got to ask Goldman and Pace seniors questions about what a future in high school and music would be like. Dance Program head teacher, Karina Saud and her sister, Danceline director Roxy Saud, led the Jazz Dance and Hip Hop Dance workshops. Within Pace’s Dance Studio, campers sweated and followed along to the dance routines they would be performing in the showcase later in the day. In addition to the physical demands of the workshops, campers had to improve their choreography to be in sync for their group performances in the talent showcase. All of the teachers were aided by current Pace students throughout the day. Students from the Thespian Honor Society led groups of campers as they practiced for their improvisation and musical theatre performances. In the Hip Hop Dance workshop, Pace Starlette dancers led campers by modeling the routines and ask-

Actress Lindsay Mendez speaks to Pace drama students By Rene D. Basulto, Special to The Miami Laker On September 30 in Pace High School’s new Innovation Center, students from the Academy of Fine Arts Theater Program chatted over Skype with Broadway actress Lindsay Mendez. Mendez is best known for playing Elphaba in the recent 10th anniversary production of “Wicked” on Broadway, as well as other starring roles in Broadway and off-Broadway productions such as “Dogfight.” Two classes of Pace drama students video-chatted with Mendez in the Innovation Center, which allowed her to be projected on multiple TVs at once. All of the students, and even their Academy lead teacher Christina PlaGuzman, were thrilled to be speaking with her. Students had an open forum discussion with Mendez, who was video-calling from New York City, with a focus on how life is like working in theater and on Broadway. Mendez told the class that she became interested in theater when she was 4 and saw her older sister in a production of “Annie.” She acted in a “The Sound of Music” production just two years later at
OLL receives recognition as an Accelerated Reader Master School Congratulations are in order for Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic School for receiving national recognition as an Accelerated Reader Master School. The honor was announced last month, as the school’s classrooms earned the Accelerated Reader Master Classroom Certification, and 16 classrooms earned the Accelerated Reader Model Classroom Certification. The Accelerated Reader program has helped students enhance their reading skills and increase their reading comprehension skills, while reading higher levels of text complexity in accordance with the latest educational standards. Also, the Accelerated Reader Master School Certification acknowledges teacher's efforts to increase students’ reading proficiency and reading levels. “We are very proud of our teacher's dedication to our students,” said the schools faculty and staff. “Our Lady of the Lakes is blessed to have such wonderful teachers who understand the importance of preparing our students for their next level of education. They are providing our students with the reading readiness skills they will need to succeed in college and career.”
the age of 6. Afterwards, she took up singing and dancing lessons, did some shows in high school, and moved to New York City when she was 18. One of the difficulties she encountered as a Latina woman in show business is when her manager at the time in New York told her that she should change her last name to Matthews. She ended up refusing and later changing managers. “I feel really proud to be a Latina woman and have the chance to play so many roles,” she said. In addition to questions about her start in theater, students also asked for advice on preparing for performances. When asked what she does to get into character, Mendez said, “When I’m first handed a script, I take the first two pages of the script and start writing on the back facts about [my character].” This process just so happened
to be identical to a character analysis assignment Pla-Guzman had recently given her students. For students who want to get into the business side of theatre, Mendez suggested that they start doing internships as soon as possible. She responded to a question about keeping her voice in shape by saying she still regularly takes voice lessons, she always stays aware of her vocal cords’ health and that vocal cords are “a muscle that needs to be exercised and rested.” For her future projects, Mendez said that she not only wants to act in theater, but also focus on making her own plays. She was also auditioning for television roles, and she was actually planning to go to a TV audition directly after her video session with the classes. Pla-Guzman said after the session that she wanted her students to see and chat with Mendez so that they could be inspired in their life and their work. Mendez

JOSE MARTI MAST 6-12 ACADEMY (JMMA) students have been the Silver Knights since the school was established in 1987, but the school has never actually had any Knights adorn the school until now. The school’s PTSA board (from left, back row) Aurora Garcia-Hoare, Leticia Carabeo, Ivelisse Pacheco, Tayme Rodriguez, Vanessa Dongioma, (front row) Luli McArthur, and Paula Isola, banded together to gift the school its very own Silver Knight. This is the third year for the PTSA which came together to see the class of students grow from 42 students to 690 since the school’s new title as a MAST Academy four years ago. JMMA is the only MAST Academy in the North Region serving Hialeah, Miami Lakes, Palm Springs North and surrounding areas. For more information, visit www.mast3.com.
School Board chair Hantman proposes inclusion of reform As proposed by School Board Chair Perla Tabares Hantman, the School Board voted to include in its 2015 Legislative Program the reform of Florida’s system of assessment and accountability in accordance with the recommendations adopted at its September meeting and in best interest of the students and teachers of MiamiDade County Public Schools. “Over the past several years,
the Florida Department of Education has been engaged in the implementation of a series of changes to our state’s assessment and educational accountability systems,” said Hantman. “Many of these changes have been challenging and have led educators and parents alike to question the fairness and reliability of the performance data generated as a result of their implementation.”

M-Dade Public Schools awarded $4.3 million school safety grant Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) has been awarded a $4.3 million grant from the Office of Justice Programs’ National Institute (NIJ) through the Comprehensive School Safety Initiative (CSSI). The funds will support school safety through the district's Campus Shield Initiative, implemented under the “If You See Something, Say Something,” U.S. Department of Homeland Security national campaign. “The significant federal invest-
ment of $4.3 million will allow for the deployment of smart technology that will enhance safety and security in Miami-Dade Schools,” said Superintendent of Schools Alberto M. Carvalho. Campus Shield is an innovative program piloted by Miami-Dade Schools Police (MDSP) that provides a centralized location for receiving, managing, and disseminating information related to threats to school safety. The system enables information sharing

between agencies that can benefit schools and students by addressing threats before they turn into action. The program provides a unique way of addressing crime by bringing together law enforcement and mental health providers, a crime analyst and mental health specialist for example, to work shoulder to shoulder for the benefit of students. Students’ mental health crises are of particular concern. Campus Shield is likely to unearth instances where students may be discussing threats to their own safety and/or to others that derive from psychosocial stressors. Campus Shield was implemented following a joint roundtable on youth safety with Carvalho, Mayor Carlos Gimenez, and Miami-Dade County police chiefs. The initiative is pivotal to how MDSP collects, stores and uses information to ensure a safe school and learning environment. The goal of Campus Shield is to address the magnitude of threats to school safety and to develop actionable information for an immediate and appropriate response to a school threat.
The brunch, which begins at 10:45 a.m., will offer menu items priced between $4.99 to $6.99. Guests will have the chance to meet with the radio host for station 88.3 FM. To R.S.V.P. call 786-800-6625.
