Council approves legal assistance to protect town charter in Pizzi lawsuit The Miami Laker staff During a Special Call Meeting last week, the Town Council voted 5-0 to hire the Akerman LLP law firm to assist Town Attorney Raul Gastesi to protect the town’s charter from a pending lawsuit by suspended mayor Michael Pizzi. Lawmakers made it abundantly clear they were sworn into office to uphold the Miami Lakes town charter and voiced their opinions that the additional legal advice was necessary in case Pizzi’s lawsuit in the Florida Supreme Court is heard and Governor Rick Scott is ordered to lift Pizzi’s suspension automatically returning him to office. Citing a conflict of interest based on the advice of the town attorney, Mayor Wayne Slaton recused himself from the special meeting and Vice Mayor Manny Cid took over.

Cid and councilmembers Tim Daubert, Nelson Rodriguez, Ceaser Mestre and Frank Mingo voted for the additional legal service. Councilmember Tony Lama didn’t attend the meeting but sent in a video supporting the direction of the town’s attorney, Raul Gastesi. Governor Scott suspended Pizzi from office following his arrest last year on public corruption charges that led to a special election to fill the vacancy which was won by Slaton. Following Pizzi’s acquittal last month, Scott refused to lift the suspension based on the special election mandated by the town charter, and Pizzi’s attorneys subsequently filed a lawsuit in the Florida Supreme Court to overturn his decision. But such a judgment may not

guarantee Pizzi gets his job back, conceivably leading him to sue Miami Lakes in Circuit Court to challenge the town charter. State law states any elected official indicted for crime may be suspended from office until acquitted and the office filled by appointment for the period of suspension, not to extend beyond the current term of office, unless these powers are vested elsewhere by law or in a municpal charter (such as the Town of Miami Lakes Charter). The town charter states if the mayor’s position becomes vacant and six months or more remain in the unexpired term, a special election shall be held for the election of a new mayor within 90 calendar days following the occurance of the vacancy.

Mayor Carlos Gimenez removes CCM golf course from budget cuts By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez rescinded a proposal to shut down one of the two 18-hole golf courses at Country Club of

Miami, to the delight of residents who have been fighting to keep its status quo as opposed to converting the massive green space fairway to a leisure area for foot golf. Gimenez made the announce-

ment last month when he presented a significantly improved spending plan during a series of budget town hall meetings, saying the $400,000 a year maintenance costs for the golf course and restoring some police officers’ jobs can be absorbed by canceling a planned $1.5 million increase in hotel-tax funding for the new Perez Art Museum. The news was warm comfort for Country Club of Miami residents, who mounted a campaign to save the golf course, worried that foot golf and other recreational sports would cause their property values to decline. Last month, about 300 residents scoffed at the idea during a meeting called by Miami-Dade Commissioner Barbara Jordan at the Country Club of Miami. They said they pay fees to maintain the golf course through a special taxing district and would be willing to pay additional taxes to keep it off Gimenez’s chopping block. Jordan, whose district includes the golf course, said residents purchased their homes, now valued between $300,000 to $400,000, because of the golf course, and they feared the proposal for foot golf was the first step and opportunity to eventually sell the land and build homes.

Town Council oks special counsel to protect charter (Continued from Page 1) During the special meeting, Gastesi examined state law and the town’s charter when addressing the suspension of an elected official. He highlighted the most important language in the charter that mandates the right for residents to elect a new mayor in October 2013 to fill out the vacant position’s remaining term. “Mr. Pizzi has no office to be reinstated to,” Gastesi said during his presentation on the floor near Pizzi and his attorney, David Reiner. Gastesi said he had to use caution because of the pending lawsuit and with the plaintiff and his lawyer present. “This is a two-part legal issue,” Gastesi said. “Do you want to defend the town’s charter? Our charter provides what it does for the town. In my opinion, you can and must defend the charter because it is right on point.” Councilmembers supported the additional legal service to work with Gastesi, saying their rightful duty is to protect the town’s charter despite any circumstances. Councilmember Mingo said he was elected and swore on the bible to uphold the town’s charter. “I want to keep my promise to the residents,” he said. On video, Councilmember Lama said Miami Lakes needs a chair at the table during the town’s legal issue. He said he spoke to many residents and most of them

support shielding the town’s charter against any possible lawsuits. “Regarding some concerns with costs and time frames, overwhelmingly the people in this town are in agreement that they and the town are directly impacted by the pending court decision regarding the reinstatement of our former mayor,” he said. “They deserve that their interest be represented in this matter. It is my opinion that the town’s charter is clear on this issue.” Councilmember Rodriguez said, “After residents elected me in 2012, I was sworn during the Oath of Office to protect the Constitution. We need to defend our Constitution, which is our town charter.” Councilmember Mestre, who served as the interim mayor following Pizzi’s arrest, said he hates what the town is going through. He said many of the residents who favor reinstating Pizzi got the wrong impression about the issue concerning two people claiming the mayor’s position. “This is not about Slaton versus Pizzi, he said. “At no time did the city attorney come to us and say fund my war against the former mayor, or let us do this to help Mr. Slaton. A case is pending in front of the Florida Supreme Court to deal with our town charter and we have a decision to make to either let someone else interpret our charter or send someone there to say this is what we believe our charter says.”

The artwork, entitled “V is for Veterans”, was created by artist Stephanie Jaffe Werner to honor all five of the United States Military Branches – Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard. A professional Advisory Committee made up of local arts professionals was formed and with the support of the Town’s Veterans Committee, selected Jaffe’s artwork. Whether placed in public plazas or staged in shadow boxes, the art-

work of Stephanie Jaffe Werner is distinguished by unconventional combinations of handcrafted and found materials. Her vibrant collages and mosaics integrate eclectic elements such as vintage keepsakes, dolls and fine china with blown glass and fired clay to create whimsical arrangements. Now based in South Florida, Jaffe was raised in New York amid a family business that manufactured wire components, nurturing an entrepreneurial spirit and a passion for collecting a wide array of

objects and transforming them in creative ways. Since 2004, Jaffe has been selected by public juries and commissioned by private enterprises for numerous interior murals and outdoor projects permanently installed throughout Florida. For more information on the unveiling ceremony, contact Special Events and Committee coordinator Clarisell De Cardenas at decardenasc@miamilakes-fl. gov.

Main Street’s Gallery Weekend a success On August 22-23, the Main Street Merchants hosted a Pop-Up Gallery Weekend in the former Limelight storefront across from the fountain. With 14 artists showcasing their original pieces of artwork, members of the Miami Lakes community, guests from Shula’s Hotel and Hotel Indigo, and other out-of-town visitors all enjoyed a bit of visual art during the special weekend. Highlights from the event included musical entertainment on Friday evening by Venezuelan pianist Manuel Gamez and his friend Phillips Cachik a percussionist from New York, and on Saturday evening, the Gallery hosted Miami Lakes resident Andres Lasaga. Complimentary appetizers were provided by Main Street restaurants Italy Today and On the Border along with Costco Wholesale. Two attendees each

night received a surprise gift of a set of Cobb Theatre movie tickets. Pop-Up Gallery Weekend is an event that brings the community together on Main Street to appreciate regional art, culture and entertainment. It runs each month on select weekends inside a vacant

storefront which transforms into a gallery filled with painters, photographers, mixed media artists and potters/sculptors. The next scheduled weekend for the Pop-Up Gallery is September 26-27 at 6709 Main Street.

American Senior High welcomes new principal Francisco Garnica By Roselind Romero The Miami Laker staff Francisco Garnica transformed from a lightning bolt to a patriot with his transition from assistant principal at Michael Krop Senior High School to American Senior High School. Garnica was born in an island in the Carribean, San Andres. He arrived to the states a day before his 20th birthday and began working toward a degree at Miami Dade College where he met his wife of 23 years, Maria Martinez. Together they decided to move to California where Garnica attended Santa Fe Community College. After moving back to the sunshine state, Garnica also attended University of Florida and Florida International University to earn his bachelor's degree in mathematics. After teaching in the MiamiDade County Public School system for a handful of years and receiving his master's degree in mathematics education, Garnica and his wife moved to Boston where he planned to pursue a career in finance. He accepted jobs at Northeastern University and East Boston High School following his move, and instead of pursuing a graduate degree in finance, Garnica received another master's in educational leadership. “My wife must have been a gypsy in a different life,” said Garnica with a smile, referring to his constant moving. “I like to start from scratch, as well. I like to look at things through a lens of change.” Despite Garnica's changing address, his love for education has been consistent and his desire to create an efficient and thriving learning environment has been resolute. After working in the Boston education system, Garnica was greeted by a turning point for his financial plans, a man by the name of Robert Case who created a program for inner city students to promote AP enrollment. “That was the turning point for me to remain in education,” said Garnica. “He was the individual that said ‘hey, we need to try something different’ and I believed him.” Garnica participated in the program Case founded and eventually found his way back to Florida, accepting a position at Michael Krop Senior High School where he worked for eight years. While at Krop, Garnica, an assistant principal, participated in the Turnaround Leaders program which enabled him to complete a semester as principal at American Senior High last school year from July through December. Upon completion of the program and Garnica's certificate, he was brought onboard to lead American High as official principal.

The new principal has already made some changes, particularly in master scheduling which have assigned leaders and instructors to key areas of student improvement. Continued changes will occur, but above all, Garnica is intent on focusing on empowering his faculty and letting his staff know that he is available and involved. When asked what he would like to be remembered for as principal, without missing a beat Garnica answered, “That I cared. If you don't care, or you're not perceived as a person who is involved and is willing to give everything at an institution, then people won't follow along.” For Garnica, caring includes the little details. A breakfast and luncheon was provided for teachers on their first day back at work, a friendly greeting from their new principal. For a good school to be called a great school, Garnica believes there needs to be a clear goal that can be communicated to faculty and staff, quality instructors, a safe learning environment, and knowledge shared, including teachers open to learning important life lessons from the very students they teach. “I want better education for the students here and students in general,” said Garnica. “It has to happen with better instruction, better supervision, and more support for teachers and students.”

The girls created to Fit Fair as a Girl Scout Silver Award Project to combat childhood obesity and to promote health and wellness opportunities for the youth.

“Thank you to Chloe and Emily for all of your work to bring this wonderful event to the Town of Miami Lakes,” said Mayor Wayne Slaton. “We applaud your efforts to promote the importance of health and wellness among our youth.” At the event, local health professionals spoke to attendees on child and adolescent health while local organizations and businesses provided information on wellness and fitness opportunities in the Miami Lakes community. The Youth Activities Task Force also gave out back-to-school giveaways and promoted its own fun activities, including the Town’s Just Run Program.

By Stephanie Brito Special to the Miami Laker Roselind Romero Miami Laker staff Times are changing and Miami-Dade County Public Schools (MDCPS) are changing right along with them. This year has ushered in new technology, new construction and new ways of learning. The General Obligation (GO) Bond Referendum was voted in back in 2012 as a plan to enhance school facilities. A total of $1.2 billion dollars is being used in schools throughout Dade County. Facets of the bond enhancements include a heavy push for updated technology, construction to bring to code various schools that were built in the 1950’s and ‘60’s, and to stimulate the local economy by employing small business owners in the community to complete the aforementioned changes. How fitting that one of the very projects that were completed from the GO Bond Referendum was the same location that the first Town Hall meeting addressing the progress was held. On Thursday, August 29, at the Miami Lakes Educational Center (MLEC) auditorium, Superintendent Alberto Carvalho and a slew of officials from MDCPS, including School Board chair and District 4 representative Perla Tabares Hantman, presented the timeline of projects that have been completed and those that are scheduled for completion within the next 5 years. The MLEC auditorium was one of the first projects completed. “The future is bright,” said Carvalho, “inside of this auditorium is but an example of the brilliance rising in Miami-Dade County.” The bond, which was originally scheduled for a 7 year timeline and included a voter-approved tax

increase has been carried out on a stricter 5 year plan and progressed with decreased taxes due to effective budgeting. Additionally, all ninth and seventh grade students in Dade County are now using Hewlett Packard (HP) tablets in place of textbooks, which are compatible with the 11,000 promethean boards installed in classrooms. Remaining grade levels will receive their tablets in the coming years. “A promise we made was very important,” said Carvalho. “Every single zip code in every single community would be touched equitably by this investment.” District 4 schools are already seeing the promises of the GO bond come to fruition, including the Miami Lakes area where American Senior High, MLEC, Barbara Goleman, and Miami Lakes K-8 Center are undergoing various stages of renovations, many years ahead of schedule. American High renovations include air conditioning and heating repairs, roof replacement, plumbing renovations, window replacements and repairs, lighting upgrades, interior and exterior improvements, fire protection enhancement and removal of portables in addition to technology upgrades. Similar renovations are being done or are slated to be completed in area schools including Barbara Goleman Senior High, Bob Graham Education Center, Country Club Middle School, Hialeah Gardens Elementary, Hialeah Gardens Middle School, Hialeah Gardens Senior High, Hialeah Miami Lakes Senior High, Jose Marti MAST Academy, Lawton Chiles Middle School, Miami Lakes K-8 Center, Miami Lakes Middle School, Palm Springs North Elementary School, and Spanish Lake Elementary.

The event was a “royal celebration” fitting for a queen. In fact, Pat Graham was crowned and given her royal sash as soon as she arrived for the luncheon at the Miami Lakes home of Carol and Stu Wyllie. Four generations of the Graham family including all of Pat Graham’s children, grandchildren, and great grandson were present as well as her brother and sister-in-law, along with Bob and Adele Graham and a few longtime friends. Those in attendance included Carol (Graham) and Stu Wyllie; Laura Wyllie and Mark Ratliff; Philip Wyllie and Karen Moore; Cynthia (Graham) and Ben

Troop 49 seeks funds to replace stolen gear Miami Lakes Boy Scout Troop 49’s storage trailer containing all of its camping gear was broken into last week and all the equipment was stolen. This included three cook stoves, eight tents, two large coolers, all propane tanks, fire extinguishers, water jugs, even all the pots and pans. All of Troop 49’s equipment with a value of nearly $5,000 is also shared with its Cub Pack and an immediate community fundraiser was organized to overcome the loss.

Individuals, organizations and businesses interested in donating to replace the lost equipment are asked to visit www.gofundme. com/djwv4k. Leaders of Troop 49 extended a heartfelt and sincere “thank you” to the residents and businesses who have stepped up and offered support. Budget workshop focuses on revenue deficits By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff The town of Miami Lakes commences the 2014-2015 fiscal year with a $1 million budget deficit caused by a reduction in franchise and utilities revenues and increased public safety costs conceivably scaling back on some of its original plans for beautification and parks and recreation, among other municipal services. Lawmakers chose to keep the 2.3581 tax rate which would generate $5.7 million in property tax revenues, but a $400,000 reduction in franchise and utilities fees

and a $600,000 increase for police services left Miami Lakes scrambling for a solution to offset the shortfall. Reinstating the solid waste franchise fee and increasing building and zoning fees and cutting some expenses were some of the options the town can pursue to close the financial gap. At a budget workshop, the town’s finance director, Andrea M. Agha, said it was difficult to balance the $14 million budget with less revenues and a four percent increase, $7.2 million, in police services with Miami-Dade County. The budget changes also left Miami Lakes uncertain over revenue projections for 2015 and 2016. But Agha recommended some alternatives to help get the town back on track by taking a “service level budget” approach by financing less significant services on a three-year, four-year or five-year plan to minimize the impact on the spending plan. For example, right-of-way irrigation and maintenance, and tree trimming, town officials would identify the level of services that would either save them money or push the budget.

With about $2.4 million earmarked for parks and recreation, including $826,000 in field maintenance, Agha said town officials can opt for maintaining the baseball fields at Miami Lakes Optimist and Royal Oaks parks in four or five years. However, construction of the new Optimist clubhouse estimated at $411,587 and $1 million for the new youth center at Miami Lakes Picnic Park East, which should be completed in 2015, proceed without any financial setbacks. To close the budget deficit, Agha has recommended Miami Lakes impose a five percent solid waste franchise fee that the town suspended in 2001, bringing in additional $50,000 in revenues to offset the cost of roadway and maintenance improvements. The town projects $1,075,500 in building-related fees but $1.2

million in expenses calls for increases in zoning fees and residential minimum permit fees to cover $188,956 in losses. Miami Lakes’ sidewalk repair proposal can proceed as planned, as the town is expected to collect about $2 million from its share of the county’s People’s Transportation Plan half penny sales tax for transit and roadway enhancements. For beautification, which is a priority for residents, Miami Lakes is allocating funding to enhance the entrance areas and building a new entrance feature at N.W. 67 Avenue and 138 Street. Lawmakers will decide the fate of the town’s budget during two budget hearings, scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday, September 9 and Tuesday, September 23, at Miami Lakes Town Hall, 6601 Main Street.

McDonald’s renovations are reflective of town By Roselind Romero The Miami Laker staff Coming upon the one year anniversary of the newly remodeled McDonald’s located at 7435 Miami Lakes Drive, the restaurant is better than ever. Numbers have continued to rise and Diego Melians, the restaurant's Operations Supervisor, believes that valuing customers is key. “We always make it a priority to look after our customers. We offer good food at a good price,” said Melians. “So if we can make them feel special when they come here then they’ll keep coming. I think that’s what we owe our success to, the support we receive from the community and letting them know we care.”

The Miami Lakes McDonald’s opened in 1994 and though Melians has worked at other locations, he considers the restaurant in Miami Lakes his home store. Melians first rose to restaurant manager in 1996. He has worked at every station in the restaurant for at least a year before reaching his current position of Operations Supervisor. “Through that experience I learned the operations inside out, and that wasn’t planned, I wasn’t thrilled about it when I was younger and spending my summers at the restaurant, but now in hindsight it’s been a valuable experience,” said Melians. Melians is a second generation supervisor at McDonald's, his

father previously held the same position, and coming full circle for a third generation it seems that Melians’ daughter Isabella, 9, may just follow in his lead. Isabella and other children her age have not only the iconic McDonald’s toys to play with, but following the completed renovations at the Miami Lakes restaurant, also have wall-mounted tablets that feature 150 various games to experience while parents enjoy their meal. Renovations began in October 2013 and ended before Thanksgiving of the same year, completing a total exterior remodeling and interior update, all done with the town in mind. Melians noted the high volume traffic for the drive-thru and sought to utilize a portion of the parking space next to the restaurant, for an additional drive-thru. Interior remodeling highlighted the town's history with black and white photos of the town including the old barn, the fountain at the center of Main Street, and Shula's Hotel. No other McDonald’s interior design mirrors the Miami Lakes location. “This restaurant is unique in the sense that we incorporated the community. Miami Lakes is a wonderful community and we wanted to create something the town could be proud of,” said Melians. “And we are very grateful to The Graham Companies that helped us find and use the photos of the town in the restaurant.” Melians, along with the help of his restaurant manager, Marlin Cuello, strive to be a positive pres-

ence in the community particularly in education and community events. “We have very strong relationships with local schools like Bob Graham Education Center, Barbara Goleman High School and HML,” said Melians. “I know those principals and Marlin is very close with the PTSA programs for many more schools in the community. That is one of Marlin’s greatest strengths, her ability to go out into the community and represent us well.” The restaurant is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. you peace of mind. Miami-Dade Animals Services offers residents online tips on how to prepare for hurricane season. For starters, pet owners that reside in qualified evacuation zones (including unsafe structures or trailer homes) can fill out a form to partake in the Pet-Friendly Evacuation Centers (PEC). It’s important to note, however, that filling out the form does not ensure acceptance into the shelter. To apply for entrance into the PEC, you must submit your application by visiting www.miamidade.gov/animals. Currently, the two centers in Miami-Dade County that accept pets during emergencies are the E. Darwin Fuchs Pavilion located at 10901 S.W. 24 Street, and Dr. Michael M. Krop Senior High School at 1410 N.E. 215 Street. These shelters accept not only cats and dogs but also small household pets such as ferrets, guinea pigs, rabbits (under 10 pounds), birds, mice/rats, hamsters and gerbils. Additionally, PEC only allows four pets per household and owners must be prepared to maintain and care for their pets at all times. The same way you prepare a disaster kit for yourself and your family, you should also prepare one for your pet(s). A pet’s disaster kit should contain the necessary essentials such as food, water, cleaning supplies, first aid supplies, pet medications and pet identification. Animal Services provides an extensive checklist which pet owners can review, which is available in English, Spanish and Creole. For more information on disaster preparedness for pets, visit www.miamidade/gov/animals/disaster-preparedness.asp.

Kansas City Chiefs game at Sun Life Stadium. A star at the University of Alabama, Nathan will be joined in the 2014 class by former defensive end Jeff Cross, cornerback Sam Madison and guard Ed Newman. The Walk of Fame was dedicated in 2012 at the Joe Robbie Alumni Plaza at Gate C of Sun Life Stadium, where the shine surrounds a statue of Robbie. Nathan, 57, was selected in the third round (61st overall) in the 1979 draft by the Dolphins, who was depicted as a smart and elusive runner with great pass-catching abilities. He was dominant during the Dolphins’ 1979-87 era in his role as the starting running back in Super Bowls XVII and XIX. Nathan accumulated 3,543 career yards rushing and 383 career receptions for 3,592 yards. Nathan, who also garnered 32 touchdowns during his career, is the only player in Dolphins history to rank among the team’s top 10 leaders in career rushing yards and

receptions. Following his playing days with the team from 1979-87, the Alabama native served as an assistant coach with the Dolphins under Don Shula from 1989-95 and held the same position with the Tampa Buccaneers under then-head coach Tony Dungy. From 2003 to 2005, Nathan was the running backs coach at Florida International University, under then-head coach and former Dolphins teammate Don Strock. Nathan returned to the NFL coaching ranks as the running backs coach for the Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco 49ers. He was the bailiff for former teammate and Miami-Dade County Court Judge Edward Newman, who just retired last month. Nathan was also a volunteer and coach for the Miami Lakes Optimist Club. Nathan will join an elite class of former great NFL players. Already in the Dolphins’ Walk of Fame are quarterback Dan

McDuffie and Nat Moore, running back Mercury Morris, guard Keith Sims, defensive end Kim Bokamper, defensive tackle Tim Bowens, linebacker AJ Duhe, defensive end Manny Fernandez and quarterbacks Earl Morrall and Don Strock.

was held in Freeport, Grand Bahama August 8 -10. The Sluggers went 4-0 outscoring the competition 33-10. The team was 2-0 in pool play scoring a total of 18 runs and allowing only 4. They earned the Number 1 seed and had a first round bye before winning the semifinal game 8-3 behind an offensive display that manufactured 8 runs on 12 hits earning a place in the championship game against a talented 3-0 team from Tampa. In the final game, the Sluggers were down 3-2 going into the bot-

tom of the 5th inning with six outs left to come back, and that is exactly what they did. They put 5 runs on the board to take a 7-3 lead into the top of the 6th inning and held the Tampa team scoreless in the final inning to capture the title. The South Florida Sluggers family expressed their appreciation to all who helped the kids get to the Bahamas to experience international baseball especially Antonio Acosta, owner of First Quality Electric.

Karon Jackson took the ensuing kickoff 55 yards for another score. The Stingarees won despite their starting quarterback missing the game due to an illness, as senior quarterback Keith Johnson threw for 103 yards and two touchdowns. Miami High held the Trojans to 90 total yards on offense and forced three turnovers. It wasn’t a good debut for Trojans’ new coach Horane Allison, who watched his team turn the ball over on downs three times.

American High won its first football game but Hialeah Miami Lakes wasn’t so lucky as the two schools kicked-off the regular season under two new head coaches. The Patriots knocked off North Miami, 45-12, while Miami High blew out the Trojans, 35-0, last week. Led by head coach Anthony White, American scored three return touchdowns in the first quarter, as Joshua Dinson had a 100-yard interception return, his brother Jeremiah Dinson scored on 95-yard kick return and safety

THE MIAMI LAKER

By Rene D. Basulto Special to The Miami Laker There is a saying that makes the rounds through the Monsignor Edward Pace High School Spartan football team: “The grind never stops.” The Spartan football team started off-season workouts on June 16, just two weeks after school ended. Players focused on weight training and conditioning. Offseason workouts ended on August 1, but there were only three days of rest. On August 4, the team returned for their first day of official practice for the school year. The “grind” is a regular part of head coach Mario Smith’s routine; he has been working closely with offensive coordinator Anthony Walker and the other coaches to prepare the team for the new season. For Smith, a Pace Class of 1992 graduate, the football program should instill not only athletic prowess, but also help the team build character, discipline, and

spirituality. He hopes that the team develops a sense of unity and cohesiveness by learning how to work together to accomplish goals. “[I expect players] to get a great learning experience, to play at a high caliber, and advance to the next level,” said Smith. He added that he wants to ensure that players are “mentally and physically prepared and spiritually endowed.” “We’re getting bigger, faster, and stronger every week. Coach Smith’s program really works,” said senior Anderson Millias, an offensive tackle who has played with the team throughout all of his four years at Pace. The Spartan varsity football team will play their second home game on Friday, September 5, against Chaminade-Madonna College Prep at 7 p.m. at Jones Field on the Pace campus. Admission is $5 or free with a Pace student ID. Visit pacehs.com/sports for more information.

HML Open House Hialeah Miami Lakes High School will hold its annual Open House event at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 30. The event allows parents and students to tour the school, gain important information about students’ educational and parental involvement, new students to become more familiar with the facilities and meet their peers, and open informal communication channels between school staff, students and parents.

Shula’s Golf Club members enjoy a summer trip to the Turning Stone Resort in N.Y. By Kenny Fill Director of Golf at Shula's Hotel Special to The Miami Laker A group of members from Shula’s Golf Club traveled to Turning Stone Resort & Casino in Verona, New York this past July. The group which I led, played the resort’s four courses: Sandstone Hollow, Shenendoah, Kaluhyat, and Atunyote. The players were arranged into teams of two and competed for prizes. Some players chose to play 36 holes each day, while others enjoyed their afternoons in the casino. The summer always proves to be a great time to escape the heat and humidity of South Florida. Each year a group of Shula’s Golf Club members travel to a different destination for golf and fun. The group of 24 players consisted of 21 golf members and 3 golf staff members. The twelve teams of two competed using the Aggregate Stableford format over

54 holes. Players accumulate points using the Stableford systems. For example, a par equals 1 point while a bogey earns 0 points. Points were added after each hole for the teams to provide a total. The team with the highest point total after 3 rounds was the winner. Turning Stone proved to be a great destination to travel to in July. The group enjoyed temperatures ranging from the low 50’s in the morning to the mid 70’s in the afternoon with very low humidity. Golfers had the chance to experience different terrains and elevations compared to that at Shula’s Golf Club. The members at Shula’s Golf Club have travelled to other destinations in the past including Casa de Campo in La Romana, Dominican Republic; Tree Tops Resort in Gaylord, Michigan; and Whistling Straits in Kohler, Wisconsin. These trips are one of the benefits of a golf membership.

Miami Lakes resident Tommy Aponte, a Pace alumnus, serves on medical mission in Guatemala By Rene D. Basulto Special to The Miami Laker Tommy Aponte, a Miami Lakes resident and Monsignor Edward Pace High School class of 2013 alumnus, recently spent 13 days from July 10 to July 21 on a medical mission trip to Ixtahuacan, Huehuetenango, Guatemala. Aponte has been majoring in nursing at the University of Florida and plans on becoming a nurse practitioner and eventually earning a doctorate with a specialization in either Pediatrics or Pediatric Oncology. “I’ve always wanted to go on a mission trip ever since I was 14 years old,” said Aponte. “[I also] really wanted to get a hands-on experience in a clinical setting which is why I specifically went on a mission trip.” The mission was done through the non-profit VIDA Volunteer organization, which focuses on providing medical, dental, and veterinary care to underserved communities in countries throughout Central and South America. Aponte, who learned about VIDA Volunteer through other Pace alumni who had worked with the organization, went on the mission with students from the University of California, Davis. Students on the mission worked in groups of three, with

each member of the group playing and alternating roles such as asking patients questions about their medical history or taking a patient’s vital signs. Aponte credits his previous work in a pediatric practice and volunteer work in hospitals with helping him in assisting patients. In addition to attending to patients’ medical needs, he also donated items such as toys and took part in activities with the community’s children. Aponte says he experienced memorable moments such as “being able to hear a baby’s heartbeat that was still in the womb for the first time and getting to play soccer with the kids.” But above all else, Aponte says that the people he met and helped will stick with him for years to come. “I will never forget an 8-yearold named Brian, who came in for a common cold and acute malnourishment,” said Aponte. “During his whole visit, he never left my lap, let my hand go, or stop smiling at me. It was just one of those moments that reassured my desire to go into the healthcare field.” Aponte said, “Many people have actually asked me if I plan on going on another mission and I always reply, ‘It was definitely a first, but certainly not my last.’”

Miami-Dade Public Schools completes random drug testing feasibility study Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) has completed a feasibility study on random drug testing of students participating in sports and other extracurricular activities. The District will be initiating plans to start a pilot program for random drug testing of these students this school year. Last week, federal authorities charged seven people with illegally providing steroids to prominent sports figures, as well as high school athletes. The District’s investigation into this case did not indicate the involvement of any M-DCPS students. “The District is committed to the safety of our children,” said

Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho. “The charges brought against these individuals were a positive move by the federal government. Closing down facilities like this – which are providing drugs to children – will benefit our community. This pilot program will provide an additional safety net against the use of performance-enhancing drugs by our youth.” The feasibility study for random drug testing was proposed by School Board Member Raquel Regalado and passed by the School Board during the September 2013 meeting.

Miami Lakes Congregational Church Concert Series features Dr. Adolfo Vidal Miami Lakes Congregational Church Concert Series presents a Fall Piano Rectial performed by concert pianist Dr. Adolfo Vidal. The concert with be at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 13, at the church located at 6701 Miami Lakeway South. Vidal will be performing an all-Chopin music piano recital that includes the 12 etudes Op. 25 and three polonaises. Chopin's etudes are some of the most challenging and evocative pieces of all the works in concert piano repertoire. While still a teenager in Warsaw, Chopin heard Nicolo Paganini perform his Caprices for Solo Violin and was impressed with what the composer had achieved in this music. It was extraordinarily complex works for the violin that presented specific technical problems yet managed to be exciting and engaging. Chopin resolved to write something similar for the piano and over the next few years, he did. Chopin's polonaises are generally the best known of all polonaises in classical music. The polonaise is a dance of Polish origin and is the composer's uplifting expression of his love for his native Poland. Vidal is a Venezuelan pianist with a doctorate degree in music from the University of Miami and piano studies at the Royal Conservatory of Music. The suggested donation is $15. A reception will follow the performance. The program is supported by South Florida Friends of Classical Music and Steinway & Sons which is providing a grand piano for the occasion.

New Testament Baptist Church hosts Christian concert Sept. 12 New Testament Baptist Church, located at 6601 N.W. 167 Street, presents contemporary Christian vocalist, Phil Wickham in concert on Friday, September 12 at 7:30 p.m. for a night of worship. The concert will also feature the church's worship band Streetside Manifesto. Doors open at 6:30 and tickets are available online at www.eventbrite.com/e/ phil-wickham-live-tickets12617881423 or through the church's website www.ntbcfl.org.
