COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER

YVETTE OSTOLAZA

Management Committee Chair and Executive Committee Member, Sidley Austin LLP Board Member, Lions Gate Entertainment Corporation

A first-generation college graduate and daughter of Cuban immigrants, Yvette Ostolaza, A.B. ’86, J.D. ’92, rose to become one of the most influential attorneys in the country, shattering glass ceilings and taking over boardrooms along the way. In 2022, she became Sidley Austin’s Management Committee Chair, making her the first woman or Hispanic to lead the global firm, the first woman to lead any top 7 revenue U.S. law firm, and the first Hispanic to lead any top 20 revenue firm. She also sits on the Board of Directors and chairs the Nominating and Corporate Governance Committee of Lions Gate Entertainment, Inc.

At Sidley Austin, Ostolaza leads more than 2,100 attorneys on four continents at the 158-year-old firm that generated $3.1 billion in revenue in 2023. “I try to spend time giving back to the community through various activities and making sure that others know that your parents can be immigrants and you can end up being one of the leaders at the firm that Mary Todd Lincoln used,” she told the Miami Herald, referring to President Abraham Lincoln’s widow.

Over her 32-year career, Ostolaza established herself as an advisor on crisis management matters, trial lawyer, and arbitrator focusing on complex commercial litigation, international disputes, and multi-district litigation. She is highly sought after by boards and companies to conduct investigations and assist with crisis management. Ostolaza is ranked as a Band 1 lawyer by Chambers USA and named one of the top litigators in the U.S. by Benchmark Litigation.

Ostolaza’s career has earned her extensive recognition including recently being named to CNBC’s inaugural list of 50 “Changemakers: Women Transforming Business.” In 2023, the American Bar Association awarded her the “Margaret Brent Women Lawyers of Achievement Award,” which recognizes “female lawyers who have excelled in their field and paved the way for other women.” Ostolaza also received the National Association of Women Lawyers’ 2023 “M. Ashley Dickerson Diversity Award,” for “her commitment to forging a path to leadership for women and diverse attorneys to follow.”

Yet, Ostolaza, who was raised in Miami’s Grapeland Heights neighborhood, had no intention of becoming a lawyer when she started at the University of Miami. After earning her

bachelor’s degree, she worked as a marketing professional in the airline industry. But, seeing the impact lawyers had across all areas of the business, she decided to return to the University of Miami to attend the School of Law on an academic scholarship and excelled at every step.

As a member of the University of Miami Law Review, she authored a case note on AIDS discrimination at a time when that area of the law was in its infancy. She was a founding member of the University of Miami Business Law Review and served on Mock Trial and Moot Court teams. “That experience, along with the litigation skills clinic, prepared me so well for a career in trial work that I felt confident in pursuing a career in litigation and have been enjoying it for the past 30 years,” she said.

In 1992, Ostolaza graduated magna cum laude, was elected to the Order of the Coif, and then took her J.D. to Texas to join one of the largest firms in the country. She spent 21 years there, rising to lead 190 attorneys in the firm’s commercial litigation group and joining the global firm’s management committee.

In 2013, Ostolaza left for Sidley Austin. She became the managing partner of its Dallas office, which grew from 15 to more than 125 lawyers. She eventually joined the firm’s Executive and Management Committees and in 2017, she was named global co-leader of the firm’s 750-person litigation group. Then, in 2021, she was tapped to chair Sidley Austin’s Management Committee, the equivalent of the law firm’s CEO. Under her leadership, Sidley Austin has continued growing in the U.S. and abroad, including opening a 21st office in Miami in 2022.

As she’s risen in the legal world, Ostolaza has given back to her community. In Texas, she represented disabled nursing home residents pro bono and served on the Board of Girls, Inc. and the AT&T Performing Arts Center. Ostolaza is a member of the Orange Bowl Committee.

She also has given back to her alma mater. She joined the Dean’s Advisory Committee at Miami Law in 2023, established the Yvette Ostolaza Mock Trial Endowment to cover the team’s travel and entry fees, and continued fostering young attorneys.

For paving the way for more women at the top of the legal field and fostering the next generation of lawyers, the University of Miami is proud to welcome Yvette Ostolaza as the School of Law’s commencement speaker.

ACADEMIC REGALIA

The custom of wearing academic dress stems from the Middle Ages, when scholars were also clerics and wore the habits of their monastic orders. Significant parts of academic dress are the gown, the hood, and the cap. Each

has a particular significance and is worn in accordance with standards established by the Academic Costume Code of the American Council on Education.

GOWNS

Gowns recommended for use in the colleges and universities of this country have different characteristics. The gown for the bachelor’s degree has pointed sleeves and is designed to be worn closed. The gown for the master’s degree has an oblong sleeve, open at the wrist. The gown for the doctor’s degree has bell-shaped sleeves. For the doctor’s degree the gown is faced down the front with black velvet and three bars of black velvet are sewn across

the sleeves. These facings and crossbars may be velvet of the color distinctive of the subject to which the degree pertains.

For all academic purposes, including trimmings of doctor’s gowns, edging of hoods, and tassels of caps, the colors associated with the different subjects are as follows:

Medicine Green

Music Pink

Nursing Apricot

Oratory (Speech) Silver Gray

Pharmacy

Philosophy

Physical Education

Brown

Forestry Russet

Journalism Crimson

Law Purple

Library Science

Lemon

Olive Green

Dark Blue

Sage Green

Public Administration, Foreign Service Peacock Blue

Public Health Salmon Pink

Science Golden Yellow

Social Work Citron

Theology Scarlet

Veterinary Science Gray

President Julio Frenk wears a black robe with four black velvet bars. The fourth chevron indicates this is the presidential regalia. The gown features orange and green piping as well as a doctoral hood lined in orange, green, and white— reflecting the official University of Miami school colors.

TAMS

The graduation tam is for those who have graduated with a masters or doctoral degree. Unlike the mortar board cap which is square in shape, the tam is actually circular in shape and are usually made out of velvet. What is common

between the mortar board cap and the tam is that both do have tassels attached to them which hang on one side when worn. These tassels serve the same purpose and are used during the celebrated turning of the tassel ceremony.

HOODS

Hoods recommended for use in the colleges and universities of this country have the following characteristics. The length of the hood worn for the bachelor’s degree is three feet, for the master’s degree, three and one-half feet, and for the doctor’s degree, four feet. The hood worn for the doctor’s degree has panels at the sides. Hoods are lined with the official color or colors of the college or university conferring the degree; more than one color is shown by division of the field color in a variety of ways, such as chevron or chevrons, equal division, etc.

The binding or edging of the hood is velvet or velveteen, two inches, three inches, and five inches in width for the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctor’s degrees, respectively, while the color is indicative of the subject to which the degree pertains. For example, the trimming for the Juris Doctor degree is purple. No academic hood should ever have its border divided to represent more than a single degree.

SOME PERMISSIBLE EXCEPTIONS

Members of the governing body of a college or university are entitled to wear doctor’s gowns (with black velvet), but their hoods may be only those of degrees actually held by the wearers or those specially prescribed for them by the institution. In some colleges and universities, it is customary for the president, chancellor, or chief officer to wear a costume similar to that used by the head of a foreign university. The chief marshal may wear a specially

designed costume approved by his or her institution. Persons who hold degrees from foreign universities may wear the entire appropriate academic costume, including cap, gown, and hood. Members of religious orders and similar societies may suitably wear their customary habits. The same principle applies to persons wearing military uniforms or clad in special attire required by a civil office.

KENTE CLOTH

Kente cloth is woven by the Asante people of Ghana and the Ewe people of Ghana and Togo. The origins of West African weaving may be traced back as early as the 11th century, with regional excavations showing spindles and looms. Only men produce kente cloth’s narrow band weaves, which are 2 ½ to 4 ½ inches wide, on horizontal

treadle looms. Certain Ewe cloths are historically specific to particular rites of passage, such as marriage or the birth of a child. In present day Ghana, the wearing of kente cloth has become widespread to commemorate special occasions. Globally, the print is used in the design of academic stoles in graduation ceremonies.
