HERA ARKARAKAS Veronica Camacho, MSM Fashion Editor Photos courtesy of Hera Arkarakas
I had the pleasure of meeting one of the most influential women I have ever met. Her name is Hera Arkarakas. She is one of the most talented jewelry designers in Miami. Last month, we went oneon-one with this magical woman to feature her in an interview for MSM. Take a look at her designs and learn more about Ms. Arkarakas.
the time was right to design my most personal collection to date, which really reflects my vision. This collection combines a classical look with a fashion forward edge. The pieces combine silver with 18-karat gold, diamonds and unique cut gemstones. I wanted to create a collection that women can easily transform casual daywear to glamorous evenings.
VC: What motivated you to start your collection? HA: I have been designing for many years and felt 20
VC: Where do you get your ideas and inspiration from? HA: I love to travel and most of my inspirations come from places
I have visited throughout the world. My designs are inspired by the different unique cultures, nature and architecture. I think everything that surrounds us is inspirational. The fashion world is also a great inspiration with colors and textures that are all represented in the collection. VC: Where do you see yourself in 5 years? HA: I will always design. It is what I love to do most in life. I believe the collection will keep evolving using new mediums
and techniques. We are always learning, and as designers our experiences expand our vision to keep creating. My vision for our company is to keep evolving and for Hera to become a full lifestyle brand. VC: What is your market and what kind of woman wear your jewelry? HA: Our market is vast to all age groups. The woman wearing our jewelry is a fashion forward woman who is confident in creating her own personal style. The
Athena Collection
tag line to our brand is “Live Life” and this has become our mantra. I live my life by these words and I believe it relates to jewelry. We should live and enjoy our lives and treat ourselves as the special women we are. VC: What can we expect from your next collection? HA: My jewelry is all about layering. The collections are all interchangeable. One of the newly introduced collections is called Cocktail Stax. It’s all about
having fun with your jewelry and wearing them in multiples. The vivid colored gemstones are all named after some of our favorite cocktails. I love statement rings. We will be launching new designs. They add the perfect drama to any outfit . I am also working on new metal finishes and colors. VC: What brought you to Florida? HA: I have always loved Florida. My brother lives in Miami and introduced me to the culture a few years ago. I fell in love with the
energy of this city, the arts scene, the art deco architecture and the people I have met have really inspired my creativity. I feel Miami has the perfect combination of the tropics and urban lifestyle. I truly feel at home in Miami. VC: Do you have any interest in opening a boutique? HA: I Would love to. It is something we are planning for, to have a Hera Boutique. VC: As a successful business woman, what message would you
like to express to other ambitious women? HA: The key is to have passion for whatever you are doing in life and to educate yourself with every aspect of your business. All dreams can become reality when you have vision and are willing to work hard. But always remember to “LIVE LIFE!”

“24 Hour Runway”
Cotton Incorporated Second Annual
Reagan Lightsey, MSM Contributing Editor Photography by Imani Ogden
On March 1, 2013 on Ocean Drive between 8th and 9th Street, Cotton Incorporated kicked off its Second Annual "24 Hour Runway" show in collaboration with People StyleWatch. At one look presented every minute from 8pm Friday night until 8pm Saturday night, audiences had the opportunity to experience 1,440 looks. From night to day, from work to play, the 24 Hour Runway show demonstrates why cotton really is "the fabric of our lives." 30
Cotton National Spokesperson, Marissa Barlin tells us more. RL: What prompted the initial idea for a 24 hour fashion show two years ago? Was there a particular inspiration for the idea? MB: The inspiration for Cotton’s 24 Hour Runway Show was drawn from looking for a unique way to tell the story of the vast versatility of cotton, while focusing on fashion. We wanted to create a grand and powerful event that would communicate this to the consumer. What better way to show consumers that cotton can be worn at any time of day and for any occasion than showcasing 1,440 looks on the runway. There is also a strong synergy between The Fabric of Our Lives® television campaign and Cotton’s 24 Hour Runway Show. The campaign showcases the versatile life and style of the celebrity talent featured in the spots. RL: What was it like planning for 1,440 different looks? How many designers were involved in the preparation? MB: First and foremost, planning for 1,440 looks takes a lot of organization. Thousands of articles of clothing must be inventoried, labeled and styled before they get fitted on the models.
Once this process is complete, the final looks are seeded into the runway show lineup. This year, 74 brands, retailers and designers participated in Cotton’s 24 Hour Runway Show. Our apparel partners give us so many beautiful and diverse cotton looks to work with so that makes it easy to tell the story of cotton versatility and style. In addition, a show of this magnitude requires a talented and experienced style team lead by our amazing head stylist, Kimmie Sussman. RL: What made Miami stand out as the choice of host city for this elaborate show? MB: Where do I begin? There are so many reasons why Cotton Incorporated chose Miami as the host city for Cotton’s 24 Hour Runway Show. First of all, Miami has become such a world class shopping destination. From interesting boutiques found in midtown to major malls such as Aventura, there is no void in places to buy cotton! Furthermore, you can’t beat the weather. In 2011, the show was held on Lincoln Road in November and this year we chose Ocean Drive in March. No matter the time of year, the weather is spectacular and the backdrop is beautiful. Miami is such a vibrant city and I think it is fair to coin it as “the second city that never sleeps”. For a 24 hour event, we needed to be in a place where we knew we would feel the love by the crowds at all hours of the night.
RL: How did Cotton Inc go about recruiting the hosts for the event as well as the celebrity endorsers? MB: Our celebrity talent for Cotton’s 24 Hour Runway Show is chosen by our marketing team who is “in the know” when it comes to anything related to fashion and entertainment. There are however, specific criteria that we look at when evaluating talent. For example, we like to work with celebrities that are known for their style or who have an interest in fashion. For example, Giuliana Rancic, who headlined the show in 2011 and again this year, is a host of Fashion Police on E! and has a clothing line, G by Giuliana. The talent has to be the right fit for Cotton and must align well with our brand. We like to work with celebrities that have a wholesome reputation who are also relevant and relatable. This year, we were proud to have Cotton’s celebrity spokesperson Camilla Belle attend the show and show off her impeccable style.

The Romantic Make your eyes pop with this soft romantic look by smudging brown eyeliner all around the top and lower lash line and sweeping the lid with a soft brown shadow and using a small smudging brush to smoke it out on the bottom lash line. Play up the cheeks and lips with a small touch of soft pinks. Finish with two coats of mascara.
Framing Face Eyebrows are an important feature on the face. Eyebrows frame the face and give the face balance, symmetry, and helps distinguish our mood/facial expressions. This spring bold brows are in. Fill in your brows with an eyeliner that matches your hair color. Brunettes should use a liner 2 shades lighter than their hair color so brows don’t look over done. When filling in brows use short hair like strokes and set the liner with an eye shadow to extend the wear. 56
Flawless Natural Looking Skin This season switch to a sheer coverage foundation such as a tinted moisturizer or BB Cream to keep your face looking young fresh and clean. Your natural beauty will show through the sheer coverage foundation while hiding any small imperfections and evening out the skins appearance. Prep and prime your skin by cleansing, moisturizing, and priming your face to achieve a smooth and even application.
Slept in Beauty Perfection is not always beautiful! This spring flaunt the frizzy messy hair and pair your do with this care free make up look. Apply a black kajal eyeliner (the creamier the better) heavily onto the lid blending it out into the crease as if you were doing a smokey eye. Bring it down and under the lash line doing the same. Take a clear lip gloss and dab just a small dot onto the center of the lid and rub along the bottom lash line. The gloss will move the liner around giving it that beautiful slept in look. Apply the eye gloss to any makeup look you like to achieve the same effect.
Nude/White Manis Spring into nudes this season with pale nude nail colors along with white manis. Light skin tone colors are in this season. These colors keep the nail looking clean and fresh. Be sure to layer a non yellowing top coat to keep these colors fresh and glossy.
Sofisiticated Rocker GIRL Line your eyes all around with a razor sharp liner. Then go in heavy with the mascara applying 2-3 coats on top and bottom lashes. Its ok to have clumps as this is what the look calls for. (Optional - Apply falsies to enhance your lashes and keep them looking full.) Keep the rest of the face neutral to keep the focus on the eyes.

Get the most Did You Know…. That most of your makeup in your bag can have a multi functional use?
out of your makeup Giselle Mendez, Beauty Editor
Eye shadows can have several uses.
-They can be used for a softer eyeliner look when applied with a small precision brush along the lash line. -Use as brow powder to give brows more softer filled in look -Applied to lips can set/enhance lip color. -Applied to the hollow areas of the face eye shadow can be used as a contour powder to sculpt the face.
58
Eyeliner:
-Line and fill in lips with fun colors you cant find in lipstick form. -Get creative and draw face art around the eyes such as dots or stars to add a little fun to your look. -Take liquid glitter liner and apply to the tips of your lashes for a beautiful yet subtle splash of light to your eyes.
Lipstick:
-Lessen the load in your travel makeup bag by ditching the blush compact and using your lipstick. A small smudge -blended onto the apples of your cheeks of a light lip color will give you a nice beautiful glow. -Swipe your lipstick lightly on your lids and blend out with your fingers to give your eyes a new kind of pop.
Blush:
-Can be used to contour the face. -Can be applied to lips for a soft natural looking lip color. -Can be used as eye shadow.
Bronzer:
-Can be applied to eyes as eye shadow. -Contour powder -Blush
So now when you can’t seem to find the color you’re looking for or simply want to lessen the load in your makeup bag, you can use what you have to achieve the look without having to overload your bag.
WAX ON the go
Samantha Marie, Lifestyle Editor
The idea of “waxing” stirs up anticipatory anxiety in most people, encompassing pain, agony, humiliation, pain, pain, and even more pain! I had many preconceived ideas in the past about waxing. I remember thinking, “Ohhhh! That sounds sooo painful! I could never do that! I think I would die! There is no way I’d ever wax my leg, let alone a Brazilian wax - are you kidding me?”. I no longer feel this way. Oddly enough, I’ve grown indifferent to shaving certain areas, and the thought of shaving makes me cringe! I have seen the benefits of waxing, and I certainly have no desire to revert back to shaving. Since I have been waxing, I no longer get those tiny red bumps, or ingrown hairs. My skin is smooth and hairless! The only grievance I have with waxing is the inconvenience. There are times I need a touch up for a few hairs, and it might be difficult at that time to schedule an appointment, so it then creates the conflict : Do I shave or wait? Shaving is not an option for me, however there have been times I had to resort to this. I considered purchasing a waxing kit to do it myself, but there are so many tools and different waxes involved, it became painfully overwhelming, too taxing of an ordeal and I decided not to bother.. I’ve recently discovered Completely Bare Wax Strips. I keep this product in my travel bag at all times. It is great for on the go touch ups. This product is also hypo-allergenic, so it’s smooth sailing for me!
Q&A with Cindy Barshop, founder and owner of Completely Bare: SM: Is it necessary to hire a licensed esthetician for waxing, or is this something that anyone can do themselves at home? CB: It’s not necessary to hire a licensed esthetician if you have great quality products at home. For those who to prefer to wax at home, completely bare’s Salon Quality Bikini and Body Wax Kit, Salon Quality Face & Other Sensitive Areas Wax Kit and Hypo Allergenic Wax Strips for Face, Bikini, Body help to achieve wonderful results and are the same high-end, result-oriented quality wax used in my New York spas. If you are going to a spa, make sure the aestheticians there are licensed; if you are paying someone for a service they should have the proper credentials and deliver stellar results. SM: What are some of the pros and cons of waxing, shaving, and laser hair removal? CB: First and foremost, your preferred method of waxing, shaving and/or laser hair removal really depends on the person. Some of the pros of waxing include: -An immediate result -Inexpensive -Can wax either in the convenience of your home or at a spa The cons of waxing include:
-It’s more painful -Ingrown hairs are possible. -Have to wait for it to grow back before waxing again. -You have to wax for the rest of your life. The pros of laser include: -Gets rid of it forever -Rejunvates skin in area -No irritation -At some point, you begin to save money. -You’re forever hair-free -Great for coarse, dark skin. -Great if certain parts of hair on your body affect your everyday life. Some of the cons of laser include: -It’s more expensive, as it’s a larger up-front cost. -Cant have a fresh suntan; you need to wait two weeks before going for your laser appointment. Some of the pros of shaving include: -Fast results -It’s inexpensive The cons of shaving include: -It can grow back faster and thicker. -Can lead to ingrown hairs. SM: How long must the hair length be before you can wax your legs, under arms, bikini area, etc..? CB: I would advise for hair to be a 1/4 inche long before waxing any area of the body.

Sensitive skin is certainly irritating in more ways than one. It is nearly impossible
to use a new product without breaking out a few pimples, or more than “a few”. It’s difficult to recognize the source at times, especially when I’ve introduced a couple new products into my skin care routine at once. At times I am not sure if I am developing skin irritation from the products I am using, or from my diet. I have noticed when I eat certain foods in larger portions than I normally would, I begin to develop tiny red pimples. It is very difficult to find products that my skin can fully tolerate. It is also a challenge to initiate new products into my skin care regiment. The thought of my skin breaking out from the “newness” is in itself overwhelming. I recently discovered the skin care line Dermalogica. I’ve asked Annet King, Director of Global Education, a few questions regarding my concerns on behalf of MSM. SM: What should people with sensitive skin look for in a sunscreen? And what about those

Director of Global Education with acne-prone skin? What ingredients should they avoid when selecting a sunscreen? AK: With sensitive or sensitized skin types, it’s important to select a physical sunscreen when choosing your protection from UV rays. Ingredients like Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide are all great options, and will prevent that stinging commonly associated with chemical sunscreens on a sensitive or sensitized skin. They protect by reflecting UV rays, rather than absorbing them like their chemical alternatives. For those with acenic skin types, it’s important to choose a product that’s oil free with ingredients like Niacinamide, Yeast Extract, or Horse Chestnut Seed Extract, which help address the condition by regulating sebum production. Everyone should avoid products with artificial fragrance, which can be photosensitizing and irritation, as well as PABA, and petroleum-derived ingredients and pure Lanolin, both of which are comedogenic. SM: What products should you avoid if you’re on a topical treatment like Retin-A, Atralin, etc. or topicals containing Benzoyl

Raw Organic Desserts Pleasure Without the Guilt Polina Ivko, Contributing Editor
Wow! There is a new kid on the block! What is his name? Raw
Dessert. For years, I have been looking to find a “perfect dessert.” Finally, I stumbled upon the organic raw desserts. They are the embodiment of pleasure without the guilt.
Rawism is an old diet that is gaining its popularity again among the health enthusiasts. It includes a variety of raw fruit, vegetables, dairy, eggs, nuts, seeds, fish and meat. The most popular of all is the vegan raw organic diet. It is very simple. Rawists consume all organic unprocessed non-GMO containing foods that are never heated beyond 104 °F. I started experimenting with it and nothing was earth-shattering about it until I tried the desserts. The list of delicious treats includes ice-cream, chocolate, cakes, cookies, macaroons and many more. They are usually gluten free, dairy free and soy free. Bananas, nuts, dried fruit, coconut, non-dairy milks, agave nectar, spices, avocados, dates, cacao butter are the most common ingredients in the recipes. Imagine eating a sweet treat that is full of antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, protein, “good fats”, sugar free, organic and low calorie. All of the dishes retain their nutrients in the original state because the food
is not being heated or processed. In essence, your body will absorb the nutrients readily in their natural state, as well as, spend less energy on cleansing your body from toxins contained in the regular factory or restaurant made desserts. The health benefits are increased energy, anti-aging effects, immunity boost, detox, glowing skin and elevated mood. It is also more cost efficient to consume raw desserts. Many food stores carry pre-prepared raw organic chocolate, cookies, granola bars and macaroons. Organic Nectar and Two Moms in the Raw are among my favorite products. Furthermore, most of the raw desserts are not difficult to make at home. For instance, I would like to share a banana nut ice-cream recipe with you. Take 2 large organic ripe (the riper the sweeter) bananas, cut them into small pieces and leave in the freezer until hardened (1-2 hours). When the frozen bananas are ready, toss them into a bowl, add 1 tablespoon of organic almond nut butter (or any other type) and mix with a handheld blender until it is smooth. Do not forget to sprinkle some organic raw cocoa powder or cinnamon. Bananas are a good source of vitamin B6, vitamin C, manganese, potassium and fiber. On the other hand almonds provide protein, vitamin E, magnesium, tryptophan, copper, vitamin B2 and phosphorus. Enjoy!
RED VELVET Samantha Marie, Lifestyle Editor
That Red Velvet cake looks awfully
promising! The smooth, creamy, velvet texture… three things of which your skin will most likely not have in common upon indulgence. Frank Lipman, M.D, dishes out the dirt on: "Someone with acne-prone skin should follow an anti-inflammatory diet and stay away from gluten, dairy, sugar, and factory-farmed meats. All these foods are pro-inflammatory. In addition, dairy and sugar cause spikes in hormones and insulin levels, which then cause breakouts." Let’s be real for a moment. We are all human, and we all have flaws. At some point or another we may find ourselves surrendering to the great temptation of such decadent desserts. It may be nearly impossible for all of us to commit to such a drastic dietary lifestyle change. However bleak and dire times might get, there are plenty of acne fighting remedies we can use to keep these symptoms at bay.

Tips
To Get A Flat Tummy…
Fast
Nothing can ruin your confidence faster than belly fat.
Before I made my transformation and lost 55 pounds in 90 days… All I wanted was a flat tummy… with some sexy abs….But no matter how hard I worked…I couldn’t get rid of that frustrating “pouch.” I’d diet and exercise, but nothing I tried got me any closer to my goal. But then I did some research and found out why belly fat can be especially hard to lose. It turns out, a lot of the fat is actually stored under your stomach muscles. And you’ll never get rid of this fat by simply cutting calories or running on a treadmill. It’s much more complicated than that. Because to get this fat under control, you first have to get certain hormones under control… hormones which cause you to store fat around the midsection. But by following these 5 simple tips, you’ll take control of your hormones… and force your body to melt that stubborn belly fat.
1
Tip #1: Make sure you get enough sleep.
It’s funny. When we think of losing weight, we think of being active. But sometimes the best thing you can do for your body is the thing that requires the least amount of effort… Sleep! Lack of sleep has been shown to lead to weight gain. It makes us insulin resistant… which sends us into fat storage mode. It also controls our levels of leptin, which is known as the hunger hormone. So 64
Ingrid Macher, Contributing Editor Photo - MSM
without enough sleep, we’re going to crave more food… making it harder for us to get the slim waistline we’re after. So make sure you get at least 7 hours of sleep per night.
posture… Another reason is… it simply makes you look skinnier! By making the decision to stand up straight, you look much healthier and much more graceful than if you slouch.
2 4 5 3 Tip #2: Reduce stress.
Stress isn’t just something that takes its toll on you mentally. Its effects are actually felt by your body. When you’re stressed, your body produces a hormone called cortisol. Unfortunately, too much of this hormone causes your body to store belly fat. So it’s extremely important you control your stress levels. Exercise is a great way to do this. But make sure you also take time to allow your body and mind to rest completely. A great way to do this is by meditation. Just close your eyes, play some music, and let your mind go where it wants to go.
Tip #3: Have good posture.
Many people underestimate the effects good posture has on their appearance. By standing up straight and pulling in your tummy, you’re indirectly working your stomach muscles all day… which helps them get that toned appearance. But that’s not the only reason to practice good
Tip #4: Eat highfiber “super foods.”
It’s hard to have a flat belly when you’re bloated. And the way you prevent the bloat is by including a lot of high-fiber foods in your diet, which keep your digestion regular. Some great choices here are: wheat germ, chia seeds, and flax seed.
Tip #5: Eat small meals every 3 hours.
This is another way to prevent the bloating people get after eating a big meal. By eating small meals more regularly, you make it easier on your body to digest those meals. So you avoid bloating. Plus, these small meals keep your metabolism revved up… so you automatically blast more fat! Make sure to have a nice snack between lunch and dinner. Aim for foods high in protein and fiber. This will help boost your metabolism and keep you from overeating at dinner time. By following these 5 tips, you’ll be able to make incredible progress… and get a flat tummy in no time. I did it… and I know you can do it.

Bashing My Diet, One Burger at a Time: A Look at What has Carne Connoisseurs Chomping at the Bits
T 70
hank God for shift dresses! …No Really. Amanda Uprichard is my new best friend; without her loosely-hanging silk mini, I would not be able to attest to the sheer awesomeness that is Burger Bash.
Let’s be clear: this event is not for the faint of dieting [South-Floridian] heart—though there is a booth called “The South Beach Diet” (cumin-turkey burger with cilantro-feta wrapped in a pita… actually pretty damn good!)—No… Instead, it is 500 yards of grill-blazing, meat-mashing, bun-slapping chowtime; and if there is one thing that I love more than a shift dress…it’s a burger. Winding through mobs of late-night-beachgoers hoping to catch a glimpse of Rachel Ray, the scent of charcoal and perfectly grilled patties wasp through the sea breeze to greet guests and ticket scalpers, alike. I consider myself one of the fortunate few as I glide (or perhaps trudge) down the beach past the infinite line of burger lovers. Excited, (though wishing someone would have told me this shin-dig was on the sand), I make my way in with a cold Amstel Light and glare down the endless carb-wrapped possibilities. There’s no way that even my two-a-day workout preparations might have prepared me for this pending-gluttony. Pretending to be a good girl, I start with the South Beach Diet and applaud my disci-
pline…but God knows it is short-lived; two second later I am at my confessed local favorite ROK BURGER for a sure thing: black angus with Swiss and mojo aioli—and just when you think that’s too much, they throw in a lobster corn dog (Lord Help Me!) Actually, Miami and Fort Lauderdale are well represented with sixteen booths booming with exuberant guests. However, six burgers and
three pairs of shoes later (no joke, more on the shoes ahead) I landed at what became my anything but BASHful favorite: the LOVE SHACK of Fort Worth, TX. As if the burger of outside skirt topped with lamb bacon (and roasted red pepper hollandaise) didn’t speak for itself, Mrs. Love—wife of the chef extraordinaire—was in front of the booth giving each guest a taste of Southern Hospitality; needless to say, this Mississippi Girl felt right at home! There is something to be said when the food not only holds it on, but it’s a family affair. Tim Love happily posed for a pic with his masterpiece and smiled brightly at my Mississippi-gone-Florida praise. By this time in the evening, even the wedges I made a quick trip to Lincoln Road for (after filling the toes of my nude pumps with sand at the Wine Spectator Trade Event) were becoming a little hard to handle. I’ve never been a girl to sacrifice style for comfort, but by this point, it was more like sacrificing style for stability; bless my sole and…enter the third pair of shoes. Alas, hallelujah for Havaiana!
What a brilliant idea, for though I was of the few guests who were ignorant of Burger Bash’s beach-y conditions, I take solace in the fact that I was not alone. After decorating my new flip-flops with martini glass charms (I wanted the miniature ketchup bottles but they didn’t match my neon pink dress), I realized this night was slowly coming to a close. If you’re like me, nothing finishes a meal like
something sweet, and while this is BURGER BASH, the sugar wasn’t just in the ketchup and occasional dollop of barbeque sauce. Cupcake Wars, complete with camera crews and contestants, delivered something for everyone, from Passion Fruit fillings to Coconut Cake. But for my personal favorite, nothing says “Miami!” like The Cuban Coffee Cupcake with a “café con leche” crunch topping. Can’t choose? You can try them all! (…Aaaasss long as you don’t try to snap a picture and get asked to leave…. Oops…all in the name of getting the inside scoop on the NEXT season of Cupcake Wars.) Don’t worry, I won’t tell you who wins the challenge—wink, wink. As the band rocked on with their interpretation of Maroon 5’s “One More Night,” my platform wedges, Havaianas and I trekked back down past five football fields of burgers. As I passed the last booth, I again said a silent prayer of thanks to the nameless inventor of burger-gut hiding shift dresses…and to Burger Bash for allowing Miami Shoot to chow down on what was my favorite even of SOBE WFF, by far.
Wine Vendors at SOBE WFF: Miami Shoot’s ‘Must Haves!’ Perched at the end of 10th Avenue, banked by the slow hustle of Ocean Drive, a canopy of white tents beckoned wine and liquor venders the country over for the much anticipated 2013 SOBE Wine and Food Festival. While Monet stood out of as the montage favorite, Miami Shoot Mag found itself salivating over VEEV, a liquor derived chiefly from acai berry, the highly-hailed “super fruit” that has taken the health world by storm over the past couple of years. Fermented down to form a sort of vodka, VEEV uses acai to form not only a 60 proof, 100% natural liquor, but also a new line of cocktails ranging from Lemonades and Cosmopolitans to Margaritas. With only 125 calories per serving, the cocktail brand Vita Frute (found in neighboring Walgreens and Total Wines) is making its mark among beach-goers across South Florida. Reagan Lightsey, Contributing Editor Photos courtesy of World Red Eye
For a more classic take on cocktails, Winesthat-Rock riffed out a definite edge; named after some all-time favorites, (beginning with Pink Floyd and extending past the Grateful Dead), this collection of vino is sure to command some applause. “We have to receive the endorsement of all bands whose logo we utilize on the bottles,” spokesperson Howard Jackowitz told Miami Shoot. “For instance, if Keith Richards hadn’t have approved, we wouldn’t have been able to
paste on the ‘Forty Licks’ banner.” That said, Wines-that-Rock certainly grabbed our attention (or maybe it was the electric guitar that wine lovers were able to snap pictures along side with every glass?) Either way, this booth definitely made the cut. Last—but certainly not least—on our list of Miami Shoot faves was an idea that made every beach-lover rethink cocktails on the sand. What if you could have a bottle of wine on the beach that allowed each guest a prepoured, perfectly allotted glass of vino? Easy as “zip, snap, sip”, Stak takes into account the less than ideal wine-drinking conditions of the sand and sun and provides the perfect, prepackage solution: wines that are pre-portioned and stack in individual glasses. You thought Capri-Suns were cool when you were a kid? Well move over, Hi-C! Stak is making waves with the sun-soaking, sandy drinkers across South Florida. Lets get real; what’s better on Sunday-Funday than chilled glass of Pino? We’ll go out on a sandbar and say… not too terribly much… Whether you’re looking for healthy option for cocktails with the girls or a rocking wine to kick off a dinner party, venders at SOBE WFF have it covered; from Absinth to Zinfandels, no palate is overlooked.

“I Pick
the Pershing…” Reagan Lightsey, Contributing Editor Photos courtesy of the Ferretti Group
MIAMI SHOOt magazine
It’s nine a.m. on a Thursday and I’ve just
been handed a glass of wine by a smartly-dressed yachting attendant. As I stand on a makeshift dock right across Collins Avenue from the Fontainebleau, I think to myself… “I could get used to this life…” As a matter of fact, I think I could get used to living full-time on any one one of these larger-thanlife (or at least my life!) yachts. Ha—maybe if I was 25 sitting on $25 mill” like Drake…but alas, I just turned twenty-six, and I don’t see the purchase of one of these gorgeous Ferretti yachts in my very near future. So, if “you only live once” is, indeed, “The Motto,” I’m more than happy to throw back some wine and pretend that I am buying a boat. …But not just any boat. (In fact, to say the word “boat” in connection with this masterpiece is probably among the greater fo pauxs of this event.) The pick of the litter today is the brand new Pershing 82’ whose debut I am here to applaud. With all of the sophistication of any number of yachts by the Ferretti Group and a cruising speed of 45 knots, yacht designer
Fulvio De Simoni has achieved something to admire. Since its origin in 1968, the Ferretti Group has built a legacy of unwavering excellence, and this is certainly true of the Pershing. The detail of this eighty-two foot yacht is not simply in the fabric—rather, it is in the wood grains, the perfectly selected, top-notch leather and the brilliantly engineered retractable glass back half. And of course, we cannot forget the majesty of its low, aggressive stance on the waves. I am fairly certain that to own a Pershing 82’ is to have arrived. That said, nothing less than the grandeur of the Miami Boat Show could have done for its debut. As a matter of fact, this particular
display of yachts is the largest in Miami Boat Show history—only fitting for the sleekness of this iconic yacht. As we tour the interior—a large living space on the main floor behind the captain’s chairs (with the aforementioned retractable doors), four bedrooms and a kitchen—it is quite easy to see why the Pershing 82’ boasts three awards, including “Best Interior Layout” and “Best Innovation.” And certainly, we can’t overlook the third award, “Best Exterior”, especially when we take into account the beautifully designed sundecks. Yes, that is sundecks with an “s”, as there are actually two: one smaller one on the tip-top by the pilot’s seat and one perfectly situated slightly
lower at the bow of the boat. Truly, no detail has been overlooked. As I wind my way back down the retractable carbon steel staircase that delivered me to the sundeck, it becomes increasingly clear why Ferretti Group has had over fortyfour years of success; the splendor of the Pershing 82’, while special in its own right, also extends across their other seven brands. From the Bertram and Riva S.p.A. to the Itama, (an open motor style yacht), Ferretti merges distinction and finesse to achieve a particular brand of yachting superiority. Who doesn't dream of being in Vogue or being the muse of Bruce Webber and have campaigns for H&M? And who has had a cast covering their broken arm 'tattooed' by the guys from Miami Ink? Vanessa is just that it-girl...With her lightblonde hair and her big blue eyes: a recipe of pure model genes from a handsome German dad and a beautiful tall blond Swedish mum. She is only eight years old, but has done things we adults can only dream of doing. When Vanessa was only 10 months old she was already shooting her first Macy's campaign. Not long afterwards she 'signed' with top-model agency Wilhelmina models and World of Kids. Since Vanessa is very young, she has a maximum amount of days that she can work and she can't be behind on her schoolwork, so her jobs are carefully selected: nevertheless she has done editorials for Vogue, Elle Italia, Grazia, campaigns for American Girl, H&M and shot with amazing photographers like Richard Phibbs, Koto Bolofo, Anke Menke. Her mum Viveca knows the drills of the fashion-industry since she is a photographer herself and always made sure that her daughter enjoys her modeling career, since she often sees parents enjoying it more than the actual kids. So, no 'Honey boo boo' stage mum drama here. It's refreshing to see a mother supporting her daughters career and traveling with her to all her jobs. What makes Vanessa so in demand besides her pretty features and dynamic personality, is that she is a natural. "Our last Christmas card was a collage of pictures from Vanessa making silly faces: everybody thought it was some really impressive photo shoot, but she just made them herself when playing on iPhoto. Above all Vanessa is a child, who likes to play, but she loves the camera and the camera happens to love her.

MSM: What is the meaning behind "Nightswim" ? AFL: I am inseparable with the ocean. It is my mother. I am also a star freak, so Nightswim was perfect to describe me. The name hit me right in the face. My current meaning for Nightswim is this: swimming through outer space. MSM: Tell us about the writing process for your new album. AFL: The writing process was very fun but very emotionally and mentally draining for me. I have been writing for this album for a couple years now - off and on of course - with new songs popping up at all times. I would always be humming to the demos - then I'd actually end up writing all the lyrics and vocal melodies for the songs just prior to recording my vocals. It gave all the subject matter a unique perspective. MSM: In what ways do you feel you have grown as an artist, since your earliest endeavors in the industry? AFL: I'm not sure. I've grown distant to dissonant chords. Ha ha. MSM: You've had experience with record labels from the early starting points in your career. What advice can you give to artists starting out regarding record labels? AFL: The best advice I can give to anybody that is even thinking of a record label is this: be careful and take it slow. Also, let the labels come to you. You'll have way more control over the situation. Never go into any agreements or sign any contracts unless you have your own lawyer (that you trust) that can look over everything for you. If you do decide that you want to send demos to a label... just send your very best song or two. Make sure your intro is not a minute long, even if you have to fade it into the middle of the song to -*get right to the point*- so to speak. Labels get tons of demos and the last thing that they want to do? Listen to demos. Ha. Make it special for them. Don't make it boring.
MSM: Tell us a little about your life outside the studio. Do you have any particular interests or hobbies? AFL: Yes! I have a kitty named Space Cat. She is crazy and amazing. I love the beach! I also enjoy light skateboarding. I say light because I usually only ride a long board these days. I'm starting a non profit organization called the PainForest - dealing with the many natural and environmental issues that face us today and into the future. The very first project I want to complete is tentatively called *The Python Program*. There are a lot of displaced Pythons here in Florida that are not having a good time right now. I want to have a habitat that can help suit these creatures so they won't have to be brutally murdered for sport and 'research'. MSM: Is there anyone in the industry you would like to collaborate with in the future? AFL: It would be a dream come true to write a song with the Italian composer Ludovico Einaudi. He's a big inspiration. I'd also like to write a song with the English artist Nick Douwma (known as Sub Focus). He is light years ahead of the game. MSM: When can we expect word on tour dates? AFL: Touring will happen very soon; at the very least in Florida and the East Coast. I'm thinking in July, with announcements in June. MSM: The final most important question! Do you love MIAMI? AFL: YES! I absolutely do. I was fortunate to be able to hang around a lot of really awesome places due to my being part of a band that was based there. I've had nothing but excellent memories from Miami and the Beaches. Official website: www.night-swim.com Official Facebook: www.facebook.com/nightswim
RELATIONSHIPS, LOVE & LIFE
“Wow Really?” is where you the readers can submit your questions regarding relationships, love, and life. You must submit the questions to wowreally@miamishoot.com and include your First name, city/state, age, and initial of your last name.
“Wow Really?” Q: I just received a job offer that requires me to move to New York. I am not in an “exclusive” relationship, but I really like this guy and I do not want to make a mistake by leaving. We have been dating for 2 months, but I really feel this is going somewhere. I know this job opportunity is important, but I want to be sure I am not making a mistake! Sierra M. 25 –Miami Beach, FL A: It is definitely going somewhere; right off the path of logic and reason. The only thing that is for certain is the job opportunity in New York. Let’s take a look here; You’ve said: “I know this job opportunity is important”, and “I feel this relationship is going somewhere”. You are not telling
me that you have been dating for two years and that you are in love with this guy. You are telling me that you “really like this guy”, and “we have been dating for 2 months”, not to mention the fact you are not in an exclusive relationship. I can’t tell you if you are making a mistake by staying, or leaving. You will know once you make that decision. This is a decision you have to make yourself. Learning to have faith in what you believe is the right decision, will enable you to trust yourself and value yourself on a deeper level. I will say New York seems rather promising! Like they say ,“everyday is an opportunity to make a new happy ending”.
Q: My boyfriend is still friends with his ex-girlfriend, even though he swears it is platonic and I have nothing to worry about, but she is always calling him when she is having issues with her boyfriend, or whatever guy she is dating at that time. I want him to cut communication with her, but I do not want to cause a whole f ight with him. It’s not right. What should I do? Kim P. 22 –Aventura, FL
A: This has the ingredients of a disaster in the making, and it appears to have been one from the start. I imagine it will be nearly impossible to avoid a “whole fight”. Despite your boyfriend’s confessions, whether he is aware of it or not, he still has feelings for his ex-girlfriend and vice versa. The concerns that you’ve expressed are regarding his behavior, and his feelings; unfortunately two things that are very unlikely to change. “My boyfriend is still friends with his ex-girlfriend”. This issue is clearly his problem. It seems as though you have already expressed your feelings to him; I’d venture to guess more than once. Why burden yourself with the anxiety? Why settle for a guy who puts his ex-friends needs before yours, and has the audacity to patronize you nonetheless. Maybe consider cutting communication with him. Don’t allow yourself to feel discontent with your relationship by giving him the power. Take back the power by showing him you will no longer accept his behavior. You deserve to have a healthy relationship, and this guy has already spoiled the pot.

Now
Is All You Have A few years back, in the late of summer I had plans to attend a
88
music festival in San Francisco. I had been awaiting the event for months prior, requested more than an adequate amount of time off of work, and was nearly ready to go. However, once the week actually arrived, I found myself quite reluctant, and yearning for a much different experience. I could feel it inside me, this so familiar growing need for the unknown. That evening my curiosity got the best of me, and I made the decision that I was going to set off in search of something new and brilliant.
As an adolescent I remember watching this particular horror film that always left me inspired in the most peculiar way from wooded fog ridden setting. That evening I began researching and scouring the internet for clues that would point me in the right direction. 24 hours later, I found myself scuffling the wet streets in Seattle. The weather was as typical as it could be. I dodged bullets of rain in the dark as I walked up a hill to the place where I would be staying. The city was very quiet, especially for a Friday. I had picked up a transit map earlier, and began planning out the day. Before leaving Los Angeles, I had emailed someone about a bike. The agreement was that I would give her double the asking price if she would hold it for me, she agreed. The next day I awoke early, and peered out onto the sound. To my surprise, the dreary weather had dispersed completely into nothing. I checked out of my hotel, picked up the apple red 20 speed beauty, and set out northbound to Mukilteo. From there, I took one ferry to Whidbey Island, which would be my key destination, but not by any means my final stop. I was quite surprised of how sparsely populated that it was, given it’s beauty. I bounced around the island for a few days, soaked up this new world in it’s entirety, popped into a thrift store, ate wild blackberries from the bushes (that literally grew everywhere), met a few people who called Whidbey their home, visited “Deception Pass”(a noteworthy landmark on the island) and saw the lights of Vancouver at night. By the time I left this remarkable place, I had an amazing sense of well being beneath my skin. I started heading towards Portland from Seattle via a 3 hour shuttle that allowed me to bring the bike along. The van was completely packed with travelers, commuters, and made for a quite miserable hot trek down interstate 5. We were stuck in an almost “stand still” of traffic when smoke started billowing out of the air vents. It took us a matter of seconds to realize what was actually happening. The driver quickly pulled over the van to the side of the road as the harsh vapor began to intensify. We barely made it out with our things, and since we were lodged within the dense traffic, there was not enough time for the firefighters to reach us before the vehicle became engulfed in flames completely. Soon the van was transformed into a steel carcass, and became quite the spectacle. A couple of the
other riders notified one of their friends of the happening, they would take us the remainder of the way, and soon we were once again in transit. I didn’t really have a clear idea or exact plan for my arrival to Portland. I thought I’d merely check out the city for a few days and then ride down the Oregon coast for however long. That night in the city, I met some intriguing nomadic travelers who were playing music in the street in exchange for the fleeting dollar of the passer byers. They mentioned that they were traveling towards San Francisco, and I told them that I was heading that direction as well. I had the crazy notion that I wanted to go where they were going, see the world how they saw it, and live in a different light for a few days. I convinced them that they should bring me along, and after a few hours, we packed up, and we drifted away into the night. They traveled by way of “Grace”, an early 90’s short school bus, which was painted in an array of emotions. We ventured at a snails pace, fed the homeless in every non-major town, exchanged stories, shared laughter, slept in open fields, and parted ways with a piece of one another. It took me much longer than the 6 hour drive back to Los Angeles, to process the incredible preceding days of adventure. I hadn’t set out with any set plan, and ended up with jar full of tales. Unconventional, yes, but I came away with an experience which was incomparable to anything, met people who were most genuine, and lived freer than I had ever had. The feeling that I took away with me from this is not something that can be conveyed or replicated; but it was mine. Don’t be afraid to live, step out of your comfort zone, try something different, talk to someone who you wouldn’t normally talk to, do things that you’ve never imagined could happen. Now is all you have. -Johnny Lee Songwriter and adventurist Photos courtesy of Johnny Lee Instagram: JohnnyLeeLove Facebook: /JohnnyLeeLove Soundcloud: www.soundcloud.com/storyinsound READER SUMMER ISSUE CONTEST: Send your submission to : contest@miamishoot.com Must include the following: Name, email, phone number, parental consent if under 18.
