Peace Corps surges in popularity for college graduates By Taylor Dolven Staff Writer
Miami University graduates are doing something different than sitting behind a desk after graduation. They are joining the Peace Corps and doing it in record numbers. Miami ranks fourth for participation on the Peace Corps top 25 list with 43 undergraduate alumni currently serving. Yet, Miami is not the only university with increased involvement. This year, the Peace Corps received the largest number of applications since 1998, when they started keeping electronic records. Richard Menard, study abroad adviser, said the economic hardship is playing a large role in this increase. “Students are more willing to broaden the possibilities for other experiences after graduation, said Bill Froude, associate director of career services. In addition to Peace Corps involvement, study abroad participation is also on the rise at Miami. “I believe their study abroad experience has opened them up to this challenge, Menard said Froude agreed. “Miami students are willing to go out of their comfort zone and try new things, Froude said. Senior Erin Stearns is traveling to a French-speaking country in Sub-Saharan, West Africa in July to begin her Peace Corps experience.
Âł, IRXQG RXW DERXW WKH 3HDFH &RUSV ZKHQ , ZDV ÂżIWHHQ \HDUV old,â€? she said, “I did research and I knew I had to do it.â€? Stearns said she wants to work for human rights and social justice. “By exposing myself to the reality of the world, I will grow in knowledge as will my ability to work for social justice,â€? Stearns said. Volunteer experience is the most important quality for Peace Corps candidates. Peace Corps recruiters urge candidates to get 30 hours, or three months, of volunteer experience before applying to the Peace Corps. “A lot of Miami students are involved with volunteering which might be a factor that is helping their candidacy for the Peace Corps,â€? Froude said. The process to become a Peace Corps volunteer is a very lengthy one. Candidates ÂżUVW DSSO\ RQOLQH JR WKURXJK two rounds of interviews, receive nominations from recruiters, get legal clearance and medical evaluations, JHW PDWFKHG ZLWK D ORFDWLRQ DQG DUH ÂżQDOO\ invited to volunteer. Stearns had a particularly lengthy experience because she missed the requirements to be placed in a French-speaking country. With just four weeks to prepare for her exam, she was forced to get up to speed on four missed years of French in three weeks. “I labeled everything in my room, I taped verb conjugations to my ceiling, I wrote tenses on my mirrors and
windows,â€? Stearns said. “I crammed as much French as I could and showed up to the test. I somehow passed the test and was nominated the same day.â€? The majority of Peace Corps volunteers are involved during the two years after they graduate college. Although some participants are retirees, Menard said 39 percent of volunteers are in Africa, 22 percent are in Latin America, and 20 percent are in Eastern Europe and Central Asia. 7KHUH LV QR VSHFLÂżF PDMRU UHTXLUHPHQW IRU WKH 3HDFH Corps. Menard said. Dori Bahir, a December 2009 graduate who is expected to leave in September for West Africa, said her experience will be invaluable. “I see it as a pretty huge commitment so hopefully that’s something potential employers will respect and admire,â€? Bahir said. Froude said employers recognize that it’s not easy being a Peace Corps volunteer. “People gain knowledge of different cultures and a really good knowledge about themselves,â€? Froude said. The fourth place ranking on the Peace Corps top 25 list will raise awareness across campus of this post-graduation alternative, Froude said. “I think that it will build on itself and will encourage more students to look at the possibility of going to the Peace Corps,â€? Froude said. “It is a viable option for students when they graduate.â€? Peace Corps representatives will be at the Spring Internship and Career Expo from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 16, in Millett Hall.

MU encourages students to complete 2010 Census By Hunter Stenback Senior Staff Writer
Miami University administrators and student groups are making a big push throughout the month of February to inform students of the importance of the upcoming 2010 Census and to ensure its accuracy. According to Susan MosleyHoward, associate vice president and dean of students, it is important for both the university and surrounding community to receive an accurate count on the Census to ensure suitable
government support. “What I’ve tried to communicate to students is it’s really important for all citizens to give the government an accurate feel for the number of citizens here and where we are distributed in the country so they can direct appropriate resources to the cities and to educational institutions,â€? CENSUS continued from page 4 it’s important. According to Mosley-Howard, students will receive their Census forms in the coming months based on whether they live on campus or off campus. “Students living on campus will be receiving their census form early April, and our residential hall staff will be helping with that process,” Mosley-Howard said. “Students living off campus will get their forms, of course, in their apartments or houses in March, and the city of Oxford is responsible for that.” Mosley-Howard said on- and off-campus students receive the same form but at different times. Sophomore Christopher Hamilton, a resident assistant in Morris Hall, said the
Census is something everyone will be able to do quickly and painlessly to make a difference. “We did training on how to distribute the Census to our residents, and it is going to be a really easy process,” Hamilton said. “In just about 10 minutes every single person in the country can be accounted for, and I think that’s pretty cool.” Overall, the 2010 Census should be much more streamlined than the process has been in decades past,McNabb said. “It’s my understanding they’ve tried to make the Census shorter to some extent,” McNabb said. “They’ve cut it down so there are 10 questions, and it decides the next 10 years, so that’s kind of one of the slogans for this year.” For more information about the 2010 Census in the Oxford community, check out the “2010 U.S. Census at Miami University” Facebook.com page, or email oxfordcensus2010@gmail.com.

Layton said. “The last time I counted, there were 897 (vouchers) redeemed.â€? Layton said these numbers are typical each year. “Typically all but 10 to 15 percent of cerWLÂżFDWHV DUH UHGHHPHG ´ /D\WRQ VDLG Of those vouchers distributed in 2007-08, 828 of the distributed vouchers were redeemed by Miami students, 33 were redeemed by the cooperating teacher, and 36 were redeemed by what appeared to be a family member of the teacher. Layton said family members were determined by occurrence of the same last name. Sophomore Nina Palmer thought it was interesting to hear about tuition vouchers IRU WKH ÂżUVW WLPH “My dad maybe would (buy a voucher),â€? Palmer said. Sophomore Kim Mehan agreed. “I think it’s a good idea if a teacher wants to take a class,â€? Mehan said. “Selling it is another way for them to make money and
another way for students to save money. I would do that, I mean it’s a smart idea. Sophomore Natalie Putman was surprised teachers were allowed to sell the tuition vouchers. “I’m surprised they’re allowed to sell them, Putman said. “I feel like teachers would want to take advantage, that’s what teachers do, they learn and they teach. Putman said she knew of her friend’s mom receiving a voucher as a fourth through sixth grade teacher, and that she had sold the voucher online. Only Miami students can redeem tuition vouchers, unless the cooperating teachers redeem it themselves, according to Layton. John Skillings, special assistant to the president for enrollment management, said teachers have continuing education requirements, so tuition vouchers are valid for three semesters after the student teacher worked at the school. “Their teachers have their own continuing education requirement, Skillings said. “The (voucher) is something that’s of value to them. Skillings said the closest things that come to a tuition waiver in the case of student teachers are employee tuition waivers. While employee tuition waivers are similar, they cannot transfer or be sold, but can be used by their spouse or children, according to Skillings.

A vendor’s Valentine’s Day
By Andrew Klatzke
$IWHU VSHQGLQJ DQ DPD]LQJ PDVN ÂżOOHG \HW H[WUHPHO\ UDLQ\ weekend in the romantic city of Venice for Carnevale, which is the Italian version of Mardi Gras, I was extremely disappointed to see it absolutely monsoon-ing in Rome. Great, more rain. I remember being stunned that in the past three blocks of walking along the Tiber River, I had been offered umbrellas by at least four different vendors, who for those of you that don’t know are about as common to see on the streets of Rome as cafes, pizzeria shops or gelaterias. And trust me, there are quite a few of those here ‌ but really, just a few ‌ Instead of buying an umbrella however, I did what I’ve had to do almost every time I pass a suave, leather jacket wearing, Ray Ban sporting Italian man on the streets (even ones with their children in strollers and wives holding onto their arms for god’s sake). I avoided all eye contact (something my Italian mother taught me), turned my chin upward and kept on walking. Still, it must have been the vendors’ pathetic and slightly creepy attempts to seduce me with their thick, evil eyebrowraising eyes while stammering the Italian over-used pick up line in an accented monotone “Ciao bella! Bellisima! Mmmm un’ombrella per la donna bella!â€? (an umbrella for the pretty woman!) over and over while simultaneously shoving a cheap, ugly and overpriced umbrella in my face that really got me thinking. What exactly are these guys going to be doing on Valentine’s Day? With this wonderful holiday I adore OH SO MUCH a few days away, I can only guess that most likely they’ll be standing on the streets just like they always do, in rain or shine, desperately trying to get a young, lonely American girl about 5’3â€? and 110 pounds with dark brown hair whose boyfriend is thousands of miles away in Michigan to buy an overpriced pair of sexy lacy “biancheria intimaâ€? (underwear) or a plastic heart-shaped EUDFHOHW WKDW ZLOO PRVW OLNHO\ EUHDN LWV ÂżUVW WLPH ZRUQ Unfortunately, they will be spitefully turned down because this girl will be spending her Valentine’s Day in the romantic city of Rome with her Italian mother who is coming to visit for the weekend — because who wouldn’t want to spend Valentine’s Day with their Mom? — but that’s beside the point. Anyway, a part of me really couldn’t help but feel bad for these guys. I mean it’s one thing for a twenty-something college guy to be harshly turned down once by the girl they’re TOTALLY crushing on after they spend $50 on three dozen red roses and a box of candy hearts, but it’s quite another for these vendor dudes to be shut down and scowled at by, well, just about every Valentine’s Day-hating female they approach, and not just on this holiday, but every hour of every day every single year! So as I walked by some shady, overweight Italian men smoking cigarettes and chilling on their Vespas who I kid you not muttered a “Ciao bella!â€? to me as I passed, I thought to myself ‌ to hell with it. I might be alone this Festa di San Valentino, but you know what, maybe I will give a special vendor a Valentine’s Day gift of my own and buy a really crappy umbrella this holiday. Let’s just hope it rains.

Everyone knows Valentine’s Day is really the only time of the year that cheesy R&B music is socially acceptable. Here, I’ve highlighted some of the best and most deliciously creepy love-making albums from the last few years. No. 1. R. Kelly – Untitled: When the intimacy rises, make sure you turn up the volume on “Bangin’ the HeadERDUG ´ , SURPLVH LW ZRQÂśW VHQG \RXU VLJQLÂżFDQW RWKHU UXQning straight out your door. It’s impossible to ignore Kel’s graceful wordplay when he commands them to “get our a** under this cover.â€? How about the incredibly ‌ sexy section where Kel proclaims “ooohhh ooohhh — those are the sounds we’re making when we’re bangin’!â€? Other incredible titles to get you in the mood include “Go Low,â€? (“you look like food, I wanna put you on my plate, stack you up with some biscuitsâ€?), “Number Oneâ€? (“the sex that we’re having here, girl ooh oohâ€?), and of course, the infamous “Pregnant,â€? which valiantly proclaims “girl you wanna make me get you pregnant, lay your body down and get you (knock you up!) pregQDQW ´ 7KDWÂśV D VXUHÂżUH ZD\ WR JHW \RXU FUXVK LQ WKH baby-makin’ mood. No. 2. Lloyd – Discography: You really have to mix and match with Lloyd to get the quality cuts. For example, how about a song like “Sex Educationâ€? off of his debut album which promises to “sex-educate ya?â€? Not racy enough? Try “Sexcapade,â€? where he promises you can go to his “private placeâ€? and join his “sexcapade.â€? If playing these songs doesn’t bring about any harassment charges, you’re probably in. 0D\EH \RX GRQÂśW KDYH D VLJQLÂżFDQW RWKHU SLFNHG RXW quite yet. If so, try “Take You Homeâ€? which just simply DVNV ÂłG JLUO ZK\ \RX JRWWD EH VR ÂżQH"´ EHIRUH KRQRUably asserting that he just wants to “take you home tonight so I can ‌ work all night.â€? No. 3. J. Holiday – Round 2: J. Holiday may not be as beautifully racy as the prior two choices of mine, but that’s really no problem. He substitutes Kel and Lloyd’s unnatuUDO DIÂżQLW\ IRU VH[ ZLWK RYHU WKH WRS FKHHV\ O\ULFV WKDW ZLOO ÂżW LQ SHUIHFWO\ ZLWK \RXU JLDQW JLIW WHGG\ EHDU DQG WUXFNORDG

Choice cuts include “It’s Yours,â€? “Run Into My Arms,â€? “Make that Soundâ€? and “Sing 2 U.â€? He’s addicted to you, can’t do without you, and “(has) plans to make you scream until you’re about to lose your voice.â€? “Make that Soundâ€? is practical; it gives you advice to “turn up the radio so you can yell as loud as you want.â€? I may have been wrong about the whole non-sexual thing with this album ‌ No. 4. Jamie Foxx – Intuition: Jamie Foxx’s album doesn’t even really deal primarily with relationships, but the interesting information it gives about them will certainly make any Valentine’s Day a drama-free undertaking. Take “Just Like Me,â€? where his apology for cheating is “I was on some bulls*** when I let that b**** up in our homeâ€? before valiantly claiming that he “wouldn’t have her unless he can have (them) both.â€? Having a rough Valentine’s Day for the same reason? You can try those lines, or you can always just use his famous excuse and “Blame Itâ€? on the a-a-a-alcohol. Of course, what’s a solid R&B album without the sexual references? “Freakin’ Meâ€? is Jamie Foxx’s more “appropriateâ€? version of a Kel song, so if you’re with one of those conservative girls you should try it as a good alternative. No. 5. Frank Sinatra – Nothing But the Best: This is baby-making music in rare-form. The original, the pure, the untainted. “Come Fly With Meâ€? is just pure ecstasy with The Voice “holding you so nearâ€? that you may hear “all the angels cheer because (you’re) together.â€? Need something racier? Try “Strangers in the Nightâ€? where he proclaims that “something in your eyes was so inviting, something in your smile, so exciting.â€? I’m telling you, everything is in here. Need a party song? Try “Drinking Again,â€? where he slurs out, “I’m havin’ a few and wishin’ you were here ‌ Oh, yeah, I’m drinking again, it’s always the same ‌ after the kicks there’s little old mixed up me.â€? As you can see, even the legendary Sinatra knows how to have a good time on Valentine’s Day. Hopefully you’ll employ the tips these musicians have felt brave enough to share with the world and have yourself a great Valentine’s Day.

Give a little to change a lot I am a lover of good news. A large part of my day is spent reading The New York Times &11 7KH +XIÂżQJton Post, etc. I read the news to, quite literally, be in the know. Knowing is noble, but someWLPHV GLIÂżFXOW Reading about the constant struggles of random strangAbigail ers is both deHaglage pressing and frustrating. The world is in pain, and there is little we can do about it. To avoid making readers feel like powerless bystanders in a heartless world, journalists often write about the “sunnyâ€? side of tragedy. A prime example of this can be seen in recent stories about the tragedy in Haiti. The amount of stories about good things that have resulted from the catastrophe are equal (if not greater) to the ones about the suffering itself; “Volunteers Fly Supplies Into Hard-to-Reach Areasâ€? In terms of avoiding stories that reveal the dark parts of life, I am more guilty than most. I’ve wondered for some time now why I cannot seem to make it through a single story that seeks to expose tragedy of some kind. I know suffering exists and have gone through it myself. The more I avoid stories like this, the less I become angered at how little I, as one individual, can do to make a difference. What I have most recently discovered, is that the problem is not in my avoidance of these stories, but in my ignorance as to how much I actually am capable of doing. Just recently a friend of mine introduced me to a new Web site, PinkDingo. The creators of the movement ask an important question, “What if, every time we all got that urge to give, we all gave next to nothing, instead of nothing.â€? Stop whining :MIL \PM [QOV[ \W [\WX \PM Ă…VM[ CATHERINE COURETAS I’m going to start out by saying something I know PRVW RI WKH 0LDPL 8QLYHUsity student population won’t agree with: the “parking peopleâ€? are NOT out to get you. Okay, say it isn’t true, but only if you can give me proof they ticketed you for something that they shouldn’t have. Chances are you deserved it. After attending Associated Student Government’s (ASG) parking forum in midNovember 2009, I began to learn a lot more about parking both on and off campus. $FFRUGLQJ WR *HRUJH 0DFDonald, assistant director of parking and transportation services, the university writes about 36,000 citations per year, about half of which are simply no-cost warnings. That means the university is writing about 18,000 tickets each year, with costs ranging from $10 to $300 depending on the violation, according to their Web site. Of course the university is going to have workers on the clock all the time looking for people who are parked illegally. That’s a ton of money, and it’s because people aren’t following the rules, which are clearly stated both on posted signs and on the parking Web site. Physical presence linked with mental absence cannot bode well for our overall academic experience. I know no one is going to want to sit in class and diligently take notes when they could be checking sports scores, but I suggest that just once, you leave the laptop at home and see just how much you actually learn. Âł THE WORLD ACCORDING TO WILL
China must be world leader American children digging their hole to China should be forewarned: the country you see upon surfacing may not look like the one you expected. Since Deng Xiaoping opened China to foreign investment and embraced American trade in the Will 1980s, the counHoyt try has gradually risen to become a legitimate and respected world power. Nurtured by success in exports and the adoption of Western business strategy, China has built a comfortable nest atop the world’s economies and a place in the global elite. However, recent bold actions suggest they are no longer content with a Western-led international system and are ready to start playing by their own rules; and their recent tiff with Google where they attempted to gain the email addresses of human rights activists is just the tip of the iceberg. Although the Chinese built their current success through relationships with the West, they now seem to be moving on. Like a bad teen movie where the new girl in town makes friends with the nice kids, only to leave them for greener pastures when noticed by the cool kids, China is letting her hair down. Partnered with America, China gained membership with the World Trade Organization, and has thrived. They have grown, and now have enough capital, size and successful local companies to focus attention on their domestic market if they wanted. This also looks to be the case in Chinese foreign policy. They have grown bold where they used to play nice, keeping their focus at home all the while. At the December 2009 Copenhagen climate conference their opposition to mandatory carbon cuts resulted in the failure of an agreement. During the April 2009 G20 Summit, China was largely uninvolved except when it came to keeping Hong Kong out of tax investigations. Discussing Iran, who provides China with the majority of its oil and gas supply, they have faced scrutiny for their reluctance to sign on with new sanctions against a nuclear program that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton calls, an “existential threat.â€? Google’s accusations of Chinese hacking are also not the ÂżUVW ,Q 0 %ULWDLQÂśV VHcurity service published a 14-page document titled “The Threat from &KLQHVH (VSLRQDJH ´ ZDUQLQJ %ULWish business of growing spying and blackmail threats from Chinese intelligence agencies. They have also criticized the United States’ decision to sell arms to Taiwan. Despite the public outcry on both sides however, it looks like it will not escalate into anything beyond words. What is important to draw from these events are what they signify. China no longer wants to be subject to international policy. They have built themselves into an enormous power, and are now more concerned with internal issues. China is a great country of hardworking, kind and determined people. It is understandable they would want to continue focusing on domestic interests; after all they have had tremendous success. +RZHYHU ZKDW &KLQHVH RIÂżFLDOV need to recognize is the time when they can maintain international reVSHFW ZKLOH EHQHÂżWLQJ IURP ZRUOG public goods is coming to a conclusion. Every Miami hockey game started with a giant smile from Brendan. Before game time began he would come upstairs, maybe chat for a minute, and go to work. His commitment to the team and his job was unquestioned. His work ethic was unmatched. He was selfless, courageous and had a strong sense of individually. He embodied everything that was right with the sport — more importantly, with humanity. He was everything people strive to be. But on Saturday, with the absence of Brendan, hockey took a back seat in Oxford. The mood was somber. Memories were shared in the press box where everyone just tried to do their jobs the best they could. The players, undoubtedly, remembered Brendan for all he was, wanting to play their best hockey for their friend. And the fans, even the ones that had never interacted with Brendan, could feel this night was not about hockey.
