SHIKUMEN TYPOLOGY
SITE ANALYSIS
SHIKUMEN IS THE MOST DISTINGCTIVE RESIDENTIAL IN OLD SHANGHAI, ARISED IN THE 1870S, IT WAS BORN FROM A JIANGNANRESIDENTIAL FORM. IT GOT IT'S NAME BECAUSE IT'S UNIQUE FRONT DOOR AS WELL AS A BLACK DOOR. THE FRONT FACADE CONSISTS OF COURTYARD WALL AND WING GABLE, IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FRONT FACADE IS THE DOOR "SHIKUMEN". THE DOORFRAME IS MADE OF STONE WITH BLACK PAINT THICK DOOR. NOW MODERN STREET CULTURE ATTRACTS MORE AND MORE ATTENTION. IN ORDER TO INHERIT AND CARRY FORWARD THE SHIKUMEN CULTURE, NUMEROUS CONSERVATION AND RENOVATION PROJECT HAS BEEN IMPLEMENT.
THE SITE IS LOCATED IN HENGFENGLI, SHANYIN ROAD HONGKOU DISTRICT, SHANGHAI. SHIKUMEN CLOSE TO SHANYIN ROAD IN THE WEST, QUAINT AND BUSTLING MARKETPLACE ATMOSPHERE IS ITS GREATEST FEATURE OF THE SITE. MAINLY AROUND THE SITE IS HIKUMEN NEIGHBORHOOD, THERE ARE ALSO SOME FORMER RESIDENCES OF CELEBRITIES AND OTHER CULTURAL SITES.
THROUGH A LONG SLOPING RAMP IN ORDER TO REMIND PEOPLE THE FEELING OF OLD SHIKUMEN'S UNIQUE SCENE, "A FLASH LINE OF SKY" INSIDE THE BUILDING. DURING THE BOTTOM-UP PROCESS, EVERY STEP CAN PEOPLE EXPERIENCE A DEFFERENT SCENERY. START WITH THE SIMPLE RED VRICK WALL, THEN YOU WILL SEE PEOPLE'S DRAMATICALY LIVING ACTIVITIES IN THE ALLEY, IN ADDITION, ONE CAN ALSO SEE THE NEIGHBOUR'S BEAUTIFUL COURTYARD, FUNALLY, THE SKY BETWEEN THE ROOF WILL GRADUALLY EXPOSED TO IN FRONT OF OUR EYES.
PEOPLE WALK THROUGH A SMALL COURTYARD OF THE BUILDING AND BEGIN THEIR VISIT. THE YARD ILLUMINATES THE ENTRANCE AND ALSO LINKS THREE DIFFERENT PART(ALLEY, STREET AND MUSEUM). THE TERRANCE ON THE SECOND FLOOR STRENCH OUT OF THE BUILDING, INTO THE COURTYARD. THERE IS A HUGE WINDOW OF THE ENTRANCE STAIRS. WITH THESE DESIGN, WE INTEND TO INCREASE THE STREETS, ALLEYS AND ARCHITECTURAL FUSION OF INTERACTION.
WE PRESERVED PART OF OLD SHIKUMEN RUINS, ESPECIALLY THE OLD STONE DOORS. WE SET SEVERAL SMALL GARDENS IN THE PLACE OF OLD SHIKUMEN, TO CREATE NEW MODES OF COMMUNICATION. WE USE TWO FACE-TO-FACE WALLS IN THE CENTER OF THE BUILDING TO DIVIDE SPACE AND CULTIVATE A FEELING OF THE OLD ALLEY SPACE.

IS PUTTING MORE EFFORT TO MEET THE HUGE REQUIREMENT, THE BUILDING OF THIS KIND OF ARVHITECTURES ARE ALSO IN A REVOLUTION. MOST WELFARE CENTERS IN THE PAST LACK OF DESIGN, ONLY TO MEET THE BASIC NEEDS, SHOW LITTLE ATTENTION TO THE EXPERIENCE AND RESPECT TO THE NATURE BECAUSE OF HUGE POPULATION . IN THIS CASE, WE PUT OUR EFFORT TO FIND SOMETHING DEEPLY HIDE IN TRADITIONAL CHINESE CULTURE, THE SPIRIT OF LIVING A HARMONY LIVE IN NATURE. WE WAN'T TO GIVE THESE VULNERABLE GROUPS A COMFORT, HELP THEM FIND HAPPINESS IN THIS PLACE.
SINGLE BLOCK FORMATION EACH UNITE WAS SEPERATED INTO TWO PARTS, LIVING PART AND AC TIVIT Y PART, ONE IS STATIC WHILE ANOTHER ONE IS DYNAMIC .WE ALSO TURN A LITTLE BIT ANGLE SO THAT THE INTERSPACE IS MORE SPACIOUS. PART1 INTRODUCES THE ANALYSIS AND DESCRIPTION OF FORM BY THE RESEARCH OF CATHEDRAL VAULTS, ENTAILS A PROCESS OF ZEROING IN, OF SHIFTING ATTETION FROM A CATHEDRAL TO THE SPECIFICITIES OF UNDERLYING GEOMETRY AND PARTICULAR VAULT FORMS. PART2 BEGINS WITH THE ARCHITECTUREAL PROBLEM AT HAND AND MOVING OUT TO FORMING, ENCLOSURE, RESULTING IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF A NEW BASIC BUILDING FORM BASED ON THE MODEL OF A 'SHED'.

THESE IMPLIED TRANSFORMATIONS ALSO CAN BE SEEN IN THE SCALE OF A SINGLE VAULT, BREAKING ENLARGES THE CENTER AS THE NEW ENDPOINTS OF RIBS DEFINE THE BOUNDARISE OF AN EXPANDED CENTER, INSERTION ADDS MORE CENTERS AND EXPANSION/ CONTRACTION MOVES THE BOUNDARIES OF THESE COMPOUND CENTERS. AT THE LIMITES OF THE IMPLIES TRANSFORMATIONS THE CENTERS ARE AGAIN TRANSFORMEND: WHEN THE SPAN BECOMES TOO LONG AND RIBS MUST BE DUPLICATED, OR WHEM AN EDGE IS COMPRESSED TO 0, AND RIBS BECOME REDUNDANT AND COLUMNS ARE DELETED.

AT THE LOWER LIMIT, CENTERS ARE SHIFTED FROM THE MIDDLE TO EDGE OF THE VAULT. AT THE UPPER LIMIT, APROLIFERATION OF CENTERS OCCURS, WHICH BEGINS TO REVERT TO REINFORCING A SINGLE CENTER. OFTEN CENTERS CAN BE DESCRIBED BY A SIMPLE POINT IN SPACE, OR AN AXIS OF CENTRALITY- IN EFFECT A CENTER LINE. BUT THE ENLARGED CENTERS IN ST. VITUS ACT AS THREE DIMENSIONAL BOUNDED VOLUMNES. THESE DRAWINGS SHOW THE EXPANDED CENTER AREA, WHICH WHEN RENDERED VOLUMETRICALLY, PRODUCE NEW FORMS WITH MULTIPLE, SKEWED, COMPOUND AND COMPETING CENTERS.

DIAGRAM THE EFFECTS OF THESE TRANSFORMATIONS WERE DEVELOPED WITH THE UNIT OF SMALL SHED. A SINGLE SHED FORM WAS SUBDIVIDED INTO UNITS, BROKEN, EXPANDED, AND ROTATED IN ORDER TO CREATE A RANGE OF SCALED FORMS PARTICULARLY TO THE SIZES OF PEOPLE AND ANIMALS, AND EACH SUBDIVIDED MASSING FORMS A COMPLETE SHED. THUS, SHEDS OF DIFFERENT SIZES ARE NESTED THE SIDE OF EACH SHED SECTION.

TECH DIAGRAM THE MECHANISMS OF TRANSFORMATION THAT MANIPULATE THE SHED TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE IDEA THAT A BIRDHOUSE OR A DOG HOUSE HAVE THE SAME FORM OF A SHED AT DIFFERENT SCALES. THE MACHANISMS OF TRANSFORMATION PRODUCES 6 SHEDS OF DIFFERENT SIZES. WITH BREAKING, SHIFTING AND INSERTION, NEW PARTS BETWEEN EACH SLICE ARE FORMED AND INSERTED, CREATING THE IRREGULAR GABLE ROOF'S WALLS AND IN EACH "BROKEN ELEVATION".

SECTION DIFFERENTLY SCALED INTERIORS ARE REFLECTED BY THE MATERIALS' SIZE IN THE ELEVATION, THE WIDTH OF THE WOOD PANELS CHANGES IN RELATION TO THE SCALE OF EACH SHED. IT IS ALSO CORRESPONDS TO DOOR SIZES, OCCUPATION OF DIFFERENT UNITS BY ANIMALS OF A CERTAIN SIZE. THE INTERIOR CONNECTS THE INTENTIONS OF THE SHEDS, CREATING DIFFERENT TYPES OF CONTACT BET WEEN PEOPLE, ANIMALS, FEED STORAGE, AND RELATED TOOLS. ACTIVITIES IN THE SHED ARE NOT ENTIRELY PROSCRIPTION. THE TRANSFORMED SCALAR RELATIONSHIPS OF BAM, SHED, AND ANIMAL HOUSE REMOVE A SINGLE CENTRAL AXIS AND DISTRIBUTE THE POINT OF CONTACT BETWEEN AND ANIMAL OCCUPANTS.

PLANS IN THIS LIBRARY, SPACE IS DEFIGNEDBOTH BY BOTH LINES AND CURVES. CONCAVE-CONVEX CURVES DEFINES A SPACE WHICH IS MORE FLUID AND CONTINIOUS, WHILE LINES IS BETTER AT ORENTATION. TWO DIFFERENT FORM CONBINES TO CREATE MORE DIFFERENT KIND OF SPACE EXPERIENCE. THE GROUND FLOOR IS A TOTALLY CURVE SURROUNDING SPACE, A RESPOND AND EMERGE TO THE SURROUNDING AREA.

7 A B O V E GROUND POOL MOS ARCHITECTS UCLA WORKSHOP PROJECT: SWIMMING POOL, LOUNGE CHAIR, POOL TOYS AND DAVID FOSTER-WALLACE
COLLABORATORS: MIAOMIAO CHU, MARK KAMISH
TUTOR: MICHAEL MEREDITH THIS PROJECT IS TO DESIGN AN "ARCHITECTURAL" A B O V E G R O U N D S W I M M I N G P O O L F O R A S MA L L COMMUNITY TO USE SEASONALLY. THE ABOVEGROUND POOL'S SITE IS INDETERMINATE, THE ABOVEGROUND POOL IS TEMPORARY AND ECONOMICAL, THE ABOVEGROUND POOL IS FOR A DIVERSE GROUP TO ENJOY. THE ABOVEGR OUND POOL SHOULD ENGAGE AN 'AETHETICS OF INDIFFERENCE'.

FINAL PROJECT SECTION THE ABOVE GROUND DIVING SCHOOL DERIVES FROM EXPERIEXCE IN ARCHITECTONIC INDIFFERENCR. IT BEGAN AS GRAPHIC EXPLORATION AS A MEANS OF DESIGN: STARTING WITH THE MOST COMMN ABOVE-GROUND POOL SHAPE, A CIRCLE, AND SIZE OF 20'. ABOVE GROUND POOLS ARE THE ACTIVITIES IN AND AROUND THEM. AS DESCRIBED BY BERNARD TSCHUMI, BUILDINGS RESPOND TO INTENSIFY ACTIVITIES THAT OCCUR WITHIN THEM, AND EVENTS ALTER AND CREATIVELY EXTEND THE STRUCTURES THAT CONTAIN THEM. IN THIS CASE, THE ACTIVITIES THEN START TO REDENE THE ABOVE-GROUND POOL AND ITS EXIST-TENCE. THE POOL IS DIVIDED BY ITS DIFFERENT ELEMENTS AND THE DENING CHARACTERISTICS. THE BASE IS COMPOSED OF CENCRETE AND ACTS TO CONCEAL , WHILE THE GLASS REVEALS. DIVERS SWIM IN AND OUT OF AREAS, VISUALLY DISAP-PEARING INTO ABYSS OR OATING IN AIR. THE CONCEALMENT OF ACTIVITY IN-SIDE THE POOL INVITES AUDIENCES TO COME AND EXPLORE. A BIT TOO TALL FOR MOST TO PEAK, THE ONLY WAY TO SEE WAHT'S GOING ON INSIDE IS TO EITHER JUMP AND GET A QUICK GLIMPSE OR ASCEND BY STAIRS AND LADDER TO TAKE A PLUNGE. THE LIFE AROUND THE POOL BRINGS LIFE TO THE POOL BY INVOLING THE ATMOSPHERE AROUND IT.
