“The Kentucky landowners who were dissatisfied with their family land titles sold their holdings and bought land in the Miami valleys. Colonel Thomas Paxton who won his spurs in General Wayne’s army and became enamoured with the Miami Country, sold his farm in Kentucky primarily because of a faulty title and bought 1,200 acres where Loveland now stands. He came here at the age of sixty and bought numerous tracts from Colonel Lytle, becoming a wealthy man before his death in 1813. The names of ten of his children who came to Ohio are associated with commodious residences, beautiful gardens and great orchards.” —William E. Smith, Southwestern Ohio, The Miami Valleys

Brief History The city is named after James Loveland, who operated a general store and post office near the railroad tracks downtown. It was incorporated as a village on May 12, 1876, and later incorporated as a chartered city in 1961. In its early days, Loveland was known as a resort town, with its summer homes for the wealthy, earning it the nickname—

“Little Switzerland of the Miami Valley.”

Watch out for the Loveland Frogman−

The Story The story of the Loveland Frogman begins on a barren stretch of road that runs along the Miami River in Clermont County, just on the outskirts of the small town of Loveland Ohio. At approximately 3:30 a.m. in May of 1955, an unnamed business man claimed to witness three bipedal quasi reptilian creatures gathered at the side of the road. The business man pulled over to the curb and observed the creatures for what he estimated to be about 3 minutes. He went on to describe the creatures as being between 3 and 4 feet tall, covered with a leathery skin and having webbed hands and feet.

THE EVIDENCE Despite sightings of the Loveland Frogman by eyewitnesses as credible as police officers, there remains no physical evidence that the creature actually exists.

MORROW

There’s a Castle? The Story Château Laroche, also known as the Loveland Castle, is a museum on the banks of the Little Miami River in Loveland, Ohio, United States. A folly of a historical European castle, construction began in 1929 by Boy Scout troop leader Harry Andrews. He built the castle on two free plots of land that his scouts obtained by paying for one-year subscriptions to The Cincinnati Enquirer. When Andrews died in 1981 he willed the castle to his Boy Scout troop the Knights of the Golden Trail.

A Word from Harry Château Laroche was built as an expression and reminder of the simple strength and rugged grandeur of the mighty men who lived when Knighthood was in flower. It was their knightly zeal for honor, valor and manly purity that lifted mankind out of the moral midnight of the dark ages and started it towards the gray dawn of human hope. —‘Sir’ Harry Andrews
