Why Marriage? • Man & Woman: – As singles great diversity • As indiv. image/likeness of God – In marriage potential for great unity • Unity in diversity • Reflects the Trinity • Marriage was created in the image and likeness of the Trinity
Importance of names • Gen. 2:19 – “Whatever Adam called each creature, that was its name...” • Gn. 2:23 – “She shall be called woman” – God honors names – Because God honors names, our names have value – Our names represent who we are • When we name our children, God & everyone else calls them by what we name them (with some exceptions) • Names can build up or destroy
THAT TREE … • Gen 2:17 The LORD: “In the day that you eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you will surely die.” • Gen 3:3 The woman: “God said, ‘You shall not eat from it or touch it, or you will die.’ ” • Gen 3:4-5 The serpent: “You surely will not die! Your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” • Gen 3:7 The result: The eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and made themselves loin coverings.
• Which way -- God’s way? or “I will do what I want!” • Cain’s offering rejected
Why Did God Reject Cain’s offering? • • • • • • •
NOT that it was a grain offering (Lev. 2) Gn. 4:3 – No moral comment on his off. Gn. 4:4 – Abel brought the firstborn Heb. 11:4 – Abel: faith, righteous, more excellent offering than Cain I Jn 3:12 – Cain: evil works, wicked Jude 11 – Don’t be like Cain – evil Gn. 4:5-6 – Cain was angry
Adam & Eve & Cain • They all sinned • NONE of them showed evidence of any repentance... – Adam blamed Eve, Eve blamed serpt. – Nothing is said about Adam & Eve’s response after being ordered to leave the garden – Cain’s response: only sadness about his punishment
Tubal Cain (Gen. 4:22) by
Charles Mackay
Tubal Cain Old Tubal Cain was a man of might In the days when the Earth was young; By the fierce red light of his furnace bright The strokes of his hammer rung; And he lifted his brawny hand On the iron glowing clear, Till the sparks rushed out in scarlet showers, As he fashioned the sword and spear.
Tubal Cain And he sang: "Hurray for my handiwork! Hurray for the spear and sword! Hurray for the hand that shall wield them well, For he shall be king and lord!" To Tubal Cain came many a one, As he wrought by his roaring fire, And each one prayed for a strong steel blade As the crown of his desire:
Tubal Cain And he made them weapons sharp and strong, Till they shouted loud for glee, And gave him gifts of pearl and gold, And spoils of the forest free, And they sang: "Hurray for Tubal Cain, Who has given us strength anew! Hurray for the smith, Hurray for the fire, And hurray for the metal true!"
Tubal Cain But a sudden change came o'er his heart Ere the setting of the sun, And Tubal Cain was filled with pain For the evil he had done; He saw that men, with rage and hate, Made war upon their kind, That the land was red with the blood they shed, In their lust for carnage blind,
Tubal Cain And he said: "Alas! That ever I made, Or that skill of mine should plan, The spear and the sword for men whose joy Is to slay their fellow-man!" And for many a day old Tubal Cain Sat brooding o'er his woe; And his hand forbore to smite the ore, And his furnace smoldered low,
Tubal Cain But he arose at last with a cheerful face, And a bright courageous eye, And bared his strong right arm for work, While the quick flames mounted high. And he sang: "Hurray for my handiwork!" And the red sparks lit the air; "Not alone for the blade was the bright steel made"; And he fashioned the first plowshare.
Tubal Cain And men, taught wisdom from the past, In friendship joined their hands, Hung the sword in the hall, the spear on the wall, And plowed the willing lands; And sang: "Hurray for Tubal Cain! Our stanch good friend is he; And for the plowshare and the plow To him our praise shall be.
Tubal Cain But while oppression lifts its head, Or a tyrant would be lord, Though we thank him for the plow, We'll not forget the sword!"
