SOARING LANDSCAPES There is never a dull moment in the world of events. Our team has been on the roll with travel over the past few months, all for the purpose of bringing you stories and trends from around the region. These updates have been published on our website on a daily basis for timely information at your fingertips (Page 6). In this issue, we scour the cities of Thailand across to Macau and back to Singapore for the latest scoop. This has led to a startling big coverage on the Land of Smiles, where the commendable efforts of the Thailand Convention & Exhibition Bureau this year have brought about much buzz to the country’s five MICE cities (Page 16). We also have an Australian PCO, Ros Barrett-Lennard, telling us why Singapore ticks all the right boxes for her conference. With technology always a burning topic, we bring you Dr Felix Rimbach
SENIOR WRITER Claire Algarme Email: claire@micenet.asia
of Globibo, who breaks down the use of event technology and walks us through ways technology can be leveraged for added value (Page 60). Returning with a second article out of a three-part Knowledge series, David Hackett of UK-based Meetings Guru Ltd. shares tips on how venues and hotels can create effective proposals to secure more MICE business (Page 8). Speaking to event planners on our travels, it is apparent that interest in the Philippines has been on an uptick. It is for this reason that we have Claire Marie Algarme as a senior writer at micenet ASIA. With her experience reporting on the tourism and MICE industry in the region, we look forward to more insights on the Philippines and surrounding destinations. We hope you enjoy this issue, and continue to look forward to your feedback.

TAKING THE LEAD
TICA
TICA marks milestones with education, communication
The Thailand Incentive & Convention Association continues to gain momentum while keeping domestic and international MICE planners satisfied through quality training and comprehensive marketing channels. Wat Arun temple

ICA’s focused commitment over the past 30 years, led by a board of directors and committee members comprising Thailand’s leading business events organisations, has allowed the association to achieve significant milestones. These milestones include the setting up of a Convention Promotion Fund to assist professional associations, non-profit societies and qualified local hosts in the bidding and hosting of international events, and a strong partnership with Thailand Convention & Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) to drive member-driven capacity building strategies. TICA’s partnership with TCEB has seen the development of a comprehensive MICE database, with joint roadshows organised for private-sector players, the establishment of the MICE Academy programme, as well as competency standards set for key operational positions and an AEC operational manual for SMEs. “They have also taken the initial step to enforce sustainability concepts into practice, and provided exceptional input and work in harmony with the MICE Capabilities Development Department to drive MICE sector in Thailand and more,” said Nopparat Maythaveekulchai, president of Thailand Convention & Exhibition Bureau. TICA also places a strong focus on quality education for the industry. It has tailored a series of training programmes, including the renowned “Train the Trainers” programme for industry veterans, which has led to these veterans creating their own courses for further education down the line. Attendees of TICA courses also receive an official certification of attendance recognised by member organisations as a commitment to uphold improved industry standards and professionalism.
32 | micenet Asia
“Their trainings are of highest standards and we are waiting to join the next one with great anticipation,” said Tobias Fischer, director business development at Go Vacation Thailand. TICA has also created career advisory roadshows in the development of sustainable future talent, where university students can learn more about the industry and enjoy job placement opportunities. As TICA gains momentum in creating awareness for destination Thailand, the association maintains communication with members, subscribers, domestic and international MICE planners through e-newsletters and social media channels. Throughout the years, TICA has assisted members in value-adding marketing tactics. For example, TICA introduced its new MICE directory in early 2014 that is available in print, online
and mobile application in hopes of broadening international reach, as well as giving members the opportunity to frequently update their information digitally. Most recently, TICA commissioned Rangsit University to do large-scale research for a 500-page training manual and guide for businesses that employ event coordinators. This gives organisations an opportunity to weave industry standards set within this guide into their respective training programmes. Clynton Chatfield, travel supervisor of Royal Automobile Club of WA based in Perth, Australia, said he had been impressed with one famil he attended in Bangkok and Krabi organised by TICA. “I would have no hesitation whatsoever in using or recommending TICA and staff for their friendliness, knowledge, expertise and ability in doing what they say they will do.”
Their trainings are of highest standards and we are waiting to join the next one with great anticipation. Tobias Fischer director business development Go Vacation Thailand
