The impact of school design has been widely recognized as being significant in the effective delivery of teaching and learning. As traditional models of education begin to change, the schools themselves must also evolve, to include ideas such as multi‐purpose spaces, and media centers ‐ spaces that must be adaptable, motivating, and involving. Adaptability in spaces should allow classrooms to vary in their use, being flexible to the subject matter being taught at the time, the current number of students, or the method of teaching between groups, individuals, or the entire class. Infrastructure for current and future technology should always be a consideration for flexibility with it being incorporated more and more within schools. Being flexible could also extend to the possibility of additions to the school, planning for future growth of the student body. Spaces in schools that motivate not only students, but faculty and staff can help create a positive environment that people want to continue to be in. A motivational atmosphere can also promote learning and creativity among students The building itself can be inspiring and informational through the expression of construction and choice of materials. Importantly, schools should be carefully designed to be safe and secure for both students and faculty/staff. Proper design should ensure that during school hours, any visitor should only be able to gain access into the school by going through a checkpoint with secure supervision. Security should not compromise the freedom of the student so much as to make the school feel like a prison, as this would be inhibiting to the idea of a motivating environment. Schools make up some of our most important civic buildings ‐ likely being the faces of our towns and cities. As such, schools become not just a place of student learning, but a place of community and out‐reach to not just students and teachers, but to the general public as well.
Thesis: Urban Elementary

Thesis: Urban Elementary Jackson, MS
2013
General: This new school building for Davis Magnet Elementary, located on N. State St. and Amite St. in downtown Jackson, makes room for 400 students, K‐5, with 4 classrooms per grade level, and 16 students per classroom to maintain a lower student‐ teacher ratio for more one‐on‐one learning time. Major Design Influences: As an educational facility, the building itself strives to be architecturally educational ‐ exposing and creating reveals of the steel structure and its connections, as well as of the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems throughout the building. Facade Details/Materials: The windows in the classrooms and library have been designed to accommodate both sitting and standing of students. Their placement in elevation within the wall vary ‐ depending on the average height of the students in that grade level. These windows punch through the walls, allowing students to occupy the interior and exterior of the building‐ breaking the barrier and idea of the classroom as a cell. They not only help to break up the monotony of a typical classroom, but accentuate the experience of the interior and articulate the surface of the exterior condition of this school building.

Site/Circulation: The building is designed to be safe for a downtown area, with a visitor entry next to the administrative area, and student entries that are as far away from the street as possible ‐ nearest to the bus and parent pick‐up/drop‐off areas. Also, the hallways are perpendicular to the admin. space as well for easy surveillance.

House as an Ecosystem Fall 2009 Designing a house and workplace for two scientists in Starkville, the House as an Ecosystem was to employ passive design strategies appropriate for Mississippi. Using generous overhangs for daylighting and a modified version of a dog-trot, this house opens up to prevailing winds to pull cool air through the ground floor and up through the staircase, which also acts as a ventilating heat stack.

Starkville Market & Office Spring 2011 Designed for a studio competition, the Kroger Fresh Market creates a connection to the community of downtown Starkville by providing fresh goods and rentable office spaces as well as contributing as an example for energy-efficient design and sustainable practices. It employs the use of precast Y-shaped concrete columns that create a honeycomb structure and pre-made brick panels as a facade system.

Boat House Spring 2010 Sited at the Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge, the Boat House acts as both a storage facility for boats and as a shop for making wooden and composite racing shells and sculls. The Boat House provides additional spaces for an office, bathrooms, showers, as well as a generous and functional dock and launching area.

Interlocking Chair Spring 2010 Using half a sheet of 4’ x 8’ 3/4” plywood, I designed and built a chair that had to be considered for mass-production. Restricted to using a minimal amount of additional materials, this chair is made without using fasteners or glue, instead using only wood finger jointing and wedging techniques.

Chicago: The Point Fall 2010 On a small site on the corner of Chicago Ave. and Rush St. in Chicago, The Point project is a 15 story building, with a 3 story restaurant located near the street level, and 12 studioloft apartments above. The floor plate of each apartment is gradually larger to create an overhang for the floor below, and a double glass facade provides for passive strategies in heating, cooling, and lighting.

Helping Hand Column Spring 2009 As an exercise in full-scale concrete construction, design of the column seconded the design of the form work, as the success of the column depended on the integrity of the form work. As such, I designed the column in two parts that bolt together, clamping the beam and securing the vertical and lateral loads. Like the poster suggests, the column became a structural “helping hand.

Cast House Spring 2009 The Cast House project introduced precast and poured in place concrete techniques. Using a precast method, I designed a modular 3’ x 2’ concrete and steel wall panel whose various arrangements generated unique apertures in the wall system, creating a solid/ void relationship between the house and the view to the surrounding landscape.

Rebuilding Smithville Fall 2011 On April 27th, 2011 an EF-5 tornado slammed into the downtown area of Smithville, MS - destroying over 150 homes and the city’s 14 businesses and city government offices, including city hall and the police station. For an entire semester, our design studio worked in conjunction with the Carl Small Town Center to help Smithville rebuild by planning a new downtown area and designing new civic buildings to replace those lost in the tornado. Working in a two-man group, the City Hall, Fire Station, Library, and P.O.D. Park were our response to the disaster.
Rebuilding Smithville City Hall & Fire Station Smithville City Hall houses the Court Room, Mayor Offices, Police Station, and Fire Department. With each department located in close proximity, employees have direct access to one another. The police station is housed between the fire station and the city hall, within the same envelope so as to create an efficient interaction between the civic disciplines. The entry hall for the police and fire stations is the connective tissue that bonds the city workers, and Smithville citizens. This space creates an axis through the municipal complex that extends to the plaza.

Rebuilding Smithville Public Library The Smithville Public Library is sited across a plaza from the civic building near the new Smithville Public School for the convenience of students. The form of the library symbolizes the unity of the town and becomes more than just the structure of the building. Architectural concrete forms a beam and column grid making lines within the building that blur the interior and exterior. These lines pull the city to this central gathering space, as well as create a conducive environment for imagination. Physically the lines from the structure become datum lines for interior shelving, desk areas, and meeting spaces. These shelves will pierce the envelope of the building, further blurring interior and exterior, and create opportunity for passive day lighting control of the library.
Rebuilding Smithville P.O.D. Park These P.O.D.s (Portable On-Site Depots) serve the Smithville community with multiple lives. The first is as a business incubator, providing a place for small vendors to set up small shops. The next life is its use as a storm shelter. Each P.O.D. is built to withstand harsh weather and is equipped to “plug-in” to the nearby fire station’s rear bearing wall which will also act as the P.O.D.’s charging station. Postweather the P.O.D.s can be used separately or connected end to end to create relief housing or “Post Ordeal Dormitories”.The final life of the P.O.D.s happens post-incubator. Given either bad weather has not come or has passed, the P.O.D.s can be once again used as incubators, moved to a new site and added on to or recommissioned as citizen artifacts for plaza seating and as a symbol of Smithville’s recovery.

Starkville Mediatheque Spring 2012 Using Plato’s “Allegory of the Cave” as a generative concept, the Starkville Mediatheque embodies the idea of progression from a place of ignorance, following a path of learning and knowledge, and then ascending to enlightenment. As one progresses through the building they are exposed to not only artwork and books throughout the main corridor and its adjacent spaces, but also to increasing amounts of natural light - metaphorically symbolizing knowledge gained in progression and ascension.
