Expansion of the interior into the exterior constitutes the concept of this addition to a 1830s Victorian house. The mass masonry wall of the original is replaced with a contemporary wood and glass screen. A bay window maximizes the minimal intervention, courtesy of an internal cill acting as a bench to the table. Large opes form internal to external seats, garnering the desired link to the outside terrace/garden space

s u s t a i n a b l e resort maldives semester two 2010 B e r k e l e y U S A
At just two metres above sea level, by current predictions, the Maldives (30 million year old atoll formations in the Indian Ocean) are set to disappear by 2100.Tasked with designing a resort which responds to this fate, this proposal envisages a titanium wall/levee encircling an untouched atoll, with a resort embedded in it. Vertical fabrication of the mesh wall reacts to sea level rise while low current under water hastens coral production, providing a break-water for the wall. site

k a y a k c l u b for dublin semester one 2010 / 1 1 U C D
Through the lens of Dun Laoghaire on Dublin’s Southside, this studio asked students to explore the possibilities of expanding Dublin’s rapport with the sea, engaging the populace with the resource that grounds their city. The kayak club sets about reactivating the sea as popular leisure point. Cut out of 1960s infill, the schemes geometry is generated from the esplanade wall, a distinctive local landmark. The architecture is inspired by the nature of esplanade wall, a molded sculpture of cast in situ concrete. Envisaged as a nodal point, the space acts as an intermediary between land and sea, a boat hall, a changing area, a club room, a café, a market space, a viewing point, a workshop and store.

Located on the banks of the Lee at the interface of the city/docks (the gateway to the city), this proposal seeks to reflect the state of flux. The concept is one of contrast; the diminishing size of the galleries plays the increasing scale of the boat hall. Taking advantage of the maritime setting, the gallery views rotate upon progression, sponsoring vistas of the docks, the harbor, the river and the city.

An Irish national children’s hospital is proposed to amalgamate the three current children’s hospitals into one 120,000 sqm super hospital. location: the Mater hospital site on Dublins north side. proposal: a 16 storey structure, placed to the south side of the dense Mater hospital site. This thesis reimagines the current proposal, relocating the structure to the adjunct Mountjoy prison site, soon to be vacated due to inhumane conditions. In accord with Rossian thought, the thesis advocates the retention and re-imagination of the culturally significant Victorian prison structure. An institutional grain is adopted, reinterpreting the Victorian courtyard typology of the original Mater hospital.

“The Mater Hospital and Mountjoy prison constitute institutional voids in the stratum of Dublin city. Through a reconsideration of the Victorian prison and hospital typologies, a contemporary institution weaves into the vacated Mountjoy site, inverting the urban impasse into a mesh of institutional, public space in the city.” m.a.d.

Design focused around the scale of the child cared for within the scale of the mass institution. The strategy derived is one of delineation, the individual room sits into a communal, south facing, play room. which in turn sits within a grouping (delineated by care provided) which in turn plugs into the overall institution

The link between park and hospital is formed by the hollowed out, deinstitutionalised Victorian prison, distributing people into the park via the characteristic fan shape of the wings.
